Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

Andrea has her own full-length novel (), but this shorty from the anthology tells how Raphael finally wins her over.
Hyenas aren't exactly what comes to mind when you think of majestic animals, but somehow team Andrews manages to make them seem like cool shifters.

description

The gist is that Andrea and Raphael have to work together to take down a villain with nothing left to lose, rescue Raphael's step-father's shade and a little boy, fight a few vampires, and get rid of some dangerous apples.
Oh. And take down Cerberus. <--yes, that Cerberus.

This wasn't my favorite KD novella of all times, but if you're a fan of the series, you'll want to read this one.

The recent release of the novella has me revisiting some of the books in the Kate Daniels world. Not all of them, mind you; though it is one of my favorite urban fantasy series, and definitely my favorite with a female lead, there are elements that make a whole series binge undesirable for me. Novellas sometimes do down easier, as Magic Tides demonstrated, so I thought I'd retry this one devoted to Andrea, Kate's best friend and Knight of the Order.

Andrea is also a closeted Beastkin, and that secret self is one of the biggest challenges of her life. In many ways, Andrews wrote a beautifully apt metaphor for issues around gender and sexuality, or people who have inside selves that are not validated by the larger world. The story has a more profound emotional resonance now, during this time of emerging trans voices, particularly because accepting her Beastkin is also about accepting active sexuality.

Beyond that, it's also good Andrews fun with equal parts investigating, fighting, witty repartee and romance. Through family connections, we get to explore new mythology. This also happens to be the story where Teddy is introduced a little more fully, so it's fun to recall these side characters. There's also a really odd moment where we get Andrea's side of an exact scene from a Kate Daniels book, which is actually kind of cool. Quite clever, actually.

While I'm not totally drawn to the hedonistic meta of a bouda-clan, I'm raising my review re-rating in light of the underlying messaging. What could be more empowering?

"Being a professional meant you nurtured your fear. You struggled with your terror until you tamed it and made it serve you."

[Original review (from centuries ago)]

I’m getting very impatient as the release of Magic Breaks approaches (only a few days left, tick tock tick tock!) and I’m trying to get my hands on anything Kate Daniels related. I wasn’t too sure about a novella centered on Andrea’s character but Magic Mourns is fantastic and gives great insight into the whole series!

Reading this made me realize how little we get to know Andrea as a character in the main series. We know she is beatskin and that she suffered quite a lot as a child but little more. We know that she gets together with Raphael but have no idea about her inner struggles. Some readers seem to think this novella is not that important in the grand scheme of things (i.e. the main series) but I think it really is. There is so much to learn here!

Now that I’ve read Magic Mourns I almost (almost I said) love Andrea as much as I love Kate. I wasn’t really sure about her until now and didn’t know what to make of her character but she really grew on me here. She kicks butt, takes no crap and is snarky as hell (maybe not as much as Kate is, but still). What’s not to love? The part of the novella where she tells Raphael about her birth and childhood is absolutely heartbreaking. Who would have guessed she had suffered so much? Actually it does explain a lot about her character as it comes across in the rest of the series.

Before reading Magic Mourns I didn’t think Raphael’s character was that interesting but I’m getting to like him quite a lot. The Bouda sex magnet has become quite the love sick hyena! I like the relationship he has with Andrea. Like Kate & Curran, they both have their flaws but complement each other very well.

As in the rest of the series, this novella is fast-paced and action-packed. The mythology-related mystery was entertaining and kept me guessing until the end. The epilogue unsettled me a bit because of the change of narrator but it reveals an interesting piece of information about Kate & Curran so I guess I can’t complain.

I can’t wait to get my hands on Gunmetal Magic to read more about Andrea!

Short but fun. I thought this would be the first time I read Magic Mourns, but ŷ remembers that I've read it before.

Just another day on the job. “Would you say the shapeshifter was in distress?
“Hell yeah, he was in distress. His tail was on fire.
I love that we later find out the shapeshifter was Raphael.

This aged like a carton of milk. “They had a saying about werehyenas: fourteen to eighty, blind, crippled, crazy. Boudas would screw anything.

Nothing like some animal carcasses to kill the mood. “He grabbed the dog carcass and ripped it in a half. Maggots spilled. He shook them out. “I prefer to tear them and tie pieces on myself. But if you would prefer to rub it all over your skin, you can do that, too.
All my fantasies of touching him evaporated into thin air with a small pop.

Sharing is caring. 'What do you risk by coming with me?'
'A huge migraine from being in your company.'
[...] 'I’ll share my aspirin,' he promised.

Death is inevitable, this was a choice. “I suppose it was inevitable. He was a man, a bouda, and he had access to my apartment. It would be impossible for him not to have examined the contents of my dresser.

Kate the detective. “Jim gave it to me a long time ago. I tried your cell, the Order, and your house. This was the next logical number. I’m a trained detective, you know.

Just men things. “Once I washed it out of my hair—
“Raphael, why are you doing this?
“I want to make you go ‘Ew again.
“Why in the world would you want to do that?
“It’s an irrepressible male impulse. It just has to be done. As I was saying, once I washed it out—

My HEART. “Aunt B’s lips trembled. She slumped against the porch post. Her shoulders shook and she covered her mouth with her hand. Tears swelled in her eyes. No sobs escaped her lips. She simply stood there and cried, grief plain and raw on her face.

Raphael is a furry. 'You’re lovely,' he whispered as he passed me in a burst of speed.
'You’re sick,' I told him.

He's not like other shapeshifters. “Now, I’d seen the Beast Lord once. He’d passed by me and I about choked. The magic that rolled off him was even older than Kate’s flavor. Primeval—not your regular shapeshifter. Enough to give a man a complex.

I love all the books in the Kate Daniels universe and especially the ones about Andrea and Raphael! In this one, there’s a scary dog-creature up to no good, someone behind it, and Andrea and Raphael will have to examine their issues as they team up to fight it. Delicious and action packed.

4 Andrea+Raphael Stars

“Would you say the shapeshifter was in distress?
“Hell yeah, he was in distress. His tail was on fire.
“He ran like his tail was on fire?
“No, his tail was on fire. Like a big, furry candle on his ass.

In this novella the main protagonist isn't our beloved Kate Daniels since she is home recuperating after being impaled by sword in the Midnigh Games, but her best friend, Knight of the Order of Merciful Aid and beastkin werehyena, Andrea Nash. Andrea is less impulsive and more methodical in her investigations than Kate until you pair her up with Raphael and then all hell breaks lose and most of the times she finds herself in trouble.

“Who is there with you?"
"Raphael"
Kate's voice snapped. "I'll be in Atlanta in three hours. Where are you?"
"I said it's nothing major."
"Bullshit. You wouldn't work with Raphael unless the Apocalypse was imminent and that was the only way to prevent it.

In this novella the trouble comes paired with a three-headed dog that usually guards the gates to Hades, the Greek god of the Underworld, a few apples that belong to either Hera or Persephone and give immortality, a crazy Master of the Dead, a missing dead body and a few vampires.

Although I love seeing how Raphael and Andrea started out their relationship, I never really loved Andrea as much as I love Kate which is the only reason I give this 4 stars intead of 5 because compared to most books, this still is a favorite of mine. Somehow though we have to separate our favorites in the series from the ones we liked less.

Yeah, sweet is the first word in my mind!:P

Between 3 and 3.5 stars. This novella, one of the interim stories in the Kate Daniels series, is told from the POV of Andrea, Kate’s best friend. Andrea finds out about a monstrous three-headed dog and sets off to take care of the problem. She finds a lot more than she expected, including vampires, a shade (ghost) of a dead man, and Raphael, the werehyena who’s been pursuing her romantically.

This novella doesn’t really stand on its own and the mystery has several weak points if you think much about it, but it slots in nicely with the overall series.

Full review to come.

A giant three headed dog as big as a house and burning spit is chasing Raphael. Andrea is running to rescue him. Apparently someone has stolen a precious dead body and Raphael is following the smell. That does not stop him to take the opportunity to pursuit Andrea at the same time.

It is cool to be a hyena!

That is what I really love in these books! Usually hyenas in shifters books are either mean, or stupid or the enemy. In Kate Daniel’s world are playful and lovable.

3.5 Boudalishious Stars Re-read before the release of Magic Breaks

Magic Mourns is set in the middle of the six week waiting period after the final showdown of Magic Strikes and Kate is off recuperating. Andrea is trying to fill in for her, but Kate’s shoes are hard to fill. Raphael needs a little help with a certain situation involving a dead body, a three headed dog and the gates of the underworld.

I stared at the phone.
“Forgot the number? Raphael asked.
“No. Thinking of how to phrase this. If I say the wrong thing, she’ll be dashing down to the ley line in minutes. Kate had never met a person she didn’t want to protect, preferably by hacking at the hostile parties with her sword. But Kate was also human and needed to rest.

I love Kate and Curran’s building love story but Raphael and Andreas courtship is a little more fun. That is just because Raphael gets to be much more playful than the Beast Lord of Atlanta. He has relentlessly pursued her for the last six months and she has been able to avoid him for the most part but spending this much time close to him might just break down any resistance to his intense charm she has left.

The sinful smile was back. “I always dreamt of being naked with you. Couldn’t pass up the chance.
I started the Jeep. “Could you get any more full of yourself?
“I’m mostly interested in getting you full of me.

This is a quick read and while not totally necessary to the Kate Daniels storyline it was really fun and Teddy Jo was a surprise. He does give a smidgen of insight into the power of Kate Daniels and the Beast Lord towards the end that I found particularly interesting.

This is a fun read. I always enjoy the world of Kate Daniels and in this we get to see how Andrea and Raphael actually get together after he chases her for months. Also, Andrea tells some of her backstory which was totally interesting.

The adventure was fun and haha I never would have guessed who Teddy Jo was.

Great filler for in-between books 3 and 4 not necessary to the main story line but fun none the less.

2016 June Re-read: I love this world. I love the different mythologies that show up and become featured. I love the characters. And I'll be honest, I like the idea of Andrea and Raphael a lot here, initially. They have a bit of a rough patch (to put it mildly) later on, which kind of sours things for me a bit. Hopefully I can get over that a bit on this re-read.

2014 August Review:
Well, damn.

How many of these did I skip reviewing last time?

Okay, here goes. This is just a novella - about Andrea and Raphael. And after the intense flirting (and thing) that happened in Magic Strikes between them, it's about damn time!

I always liked Andrea. She's strong, competent, level-headed, and willing to fight for what she believes. She sticks to her promises, and her ground - no matter what. And I can trust her. I know for a fact she will never, ever betray Kate. What I learned in this book is that she's also scarred, and scared. She needs Raphael just as much as he needs her.

Raphael's been chasing Andrea, with no encouragement, for six months. It's more than obvious that he's smitten with her, and it's more than just - in Andrea's words: TWT-IHFB . Personally, I don't find Raphael sexy, even if Kate, Andrea and the rest of the world does, but I have to admit that I love his personality. He's loyal, committed, a smart-ass, and kicks butt ... in human form quite frequently. Plus he's a smart businessman. What more could a woman want?

When Cerberus shows up, I knew I was going to love this. Greek mythology was one of my first interests in ancient history - and the myth that's central to this story is still one of my favorites. I like how Ilona Andrews weaves in the mythologies of so many different cultures to this series, paying homage and making them their own all at the same time.

Though Andrea and Raphael will never be as interesting to me as Kate and Curran, this is a good novella that gives you more insight to some of these great characters of the Post-Shift world.

Original Review

Magic Mourns is available to purchase as an ebook novella but was also included in the Must Love Hellhounds anthology. The story is set after Magic Strikes while Kate is still recovering from her injuries and taking a break from her duties for the Order of Knights so her friend Andrea is standing in for her. When Andrea gets a call from a member of the public concerned that a shapeshifter is in danger she gets more than she bargains for when she goes to investigate. Not only does she come face to face with a giant hellhound but she is also forced to work closely with Raphael, the werehyena she has been trying to avoid ever since she realised he had feelings for her.

I have been a fan of Andrea since she first appeared in the series, she always makes such brilliant snarky comments and her interactions with Kate never fail to make me smile. I loved getting to see her take a leading role and this has me even more excited to read the full length novel that is told from her point of view (Gunmetal Magic). Andrea is just as kick ass as Kate but in a different way, where Kate excels with a sword Andrea is more comfortable with guns - the bigger the better. It's a good job she's a crack shot because her skills are certainly put to the test in this story. This may only be a novella but it packs a lot in and I really enjoyed seeing Andrea start to come to terms with her past and accept herself and her abilities.

I have to say I really started to fall for Raphael during this story, I've always liked him and found him amusing but this was the first time I really felt the chemistry. He is such a sweetie when it comes to Andrea, she has been pushing him away for a long time now because she is scared of getting hurt but now he finally has her full attention he goes all out to prove that she can trust him. I love the way he acts towards her and think they make a great couple so I'm all for seeing more of them together in the future.

I'm not going to talk about the plot because it would be too easy to spoil this novella but I will tell you that it has everything you'd expect from one of Ilona Andrew's full length books just wrapped in a shorter package. There is plenty of action, a lot of humour and some fab banter between the main characters. Don't expect to see much of Kate though, she only makes a very brief appearance as this is very much Andrea and Raphael's story. A very worthy addition to the series and a story that fans aren't going to want to miss, my only complaint is that I wanted more!

_______________________

2nd Read

I'm loving this series just as much the second time around :o)

3rd Read

I love this novella more every time I read it (hence the upgrade to 5 stars!). Andrea and Raphael are great characters separately but together they're just brilliant. Andrea had such a terrible childhood that it's no wonder she has trouble letting anyone get too close, especially boudas, but Raphael is persistent. He's set his sights on her and will do whatever it takes to win her around.

I'd love to read more stories about these two and I'd quite like to revisit Teddy Jo (I don't remember him appearing again later on in the series yet but I could be wrong?) too, I think he's a character with a lot of potential.

Another year, another Kate Daniels re-read.>

The Kate Daniels world has become a sanctuary for me. I can hide in it from the pressure of everyday life and find inspiration to be better and stronger. Andrea is one of the characters that makes a great role model for women at all ages. She's flawed but that only makes her more real and even worthier of admiration because she succeeds despite her flaws. I wish I had her inner strength and her bravery, not only when it comes to life and death situations but also when it comes to letting someone in despite the pain and fear. I hope that after countless re-reads some of that might rub off on me ;)

Buddy reread in preparation for with the IAA.
The first time I was impressed. Impressed by the world and by how amazingly strong yet vulnerable Andrea is. Now I mostly noticed how freaking hilarious this story is! And I loved every second of it :)

Original review:

Andrea plays a major role in this series but so far we knew very little about her and what makes her tick. So this was a great opportunity to get to know her and Raphael a little bit better and let me say this woman deserves Respect. Few people would have the strength to not only survive her childhood but also become such wonderful people. Most would probably turn into complete psychos. Add to this an angel of Death and some Greek mythology and you get the amazing blend that is the Kate Daniles world!

Quick detour with @Kim for a wee adventure through greek mythology alongside Andrea & Raphael as their paths cross while she is covering for Kate...we are introduced to another new character who altho limited on page time made an impression and I hope they will return/join the main series cast again at some point 🤞

Andrea is such a fav of mine in the main series. Seeing her on her own adventure here and learning more about her 💔 backstory just made me root for her & her awesome friendship with Kate all the more.

Taking one more small detour into Curran's PoV for the couple of overlapping scenes from book3 & hinted at here before book4...tomorrow? I think it's safe to say this series is a slump buster 🤗

I'm loving that, so far, none of my rereads have differed in rating or general enjoyment of them. Even if I didn't love them to begin with, case in point, this novella; while good.. it's mostly just a tease of things to come as well as a chance to get a certain pairing off the ground without taking away from the one pairing we're all dying for.

I am so ready for some apple pie now.

This is a novella from Andrea's POV. She is still a knight, still hiding her beastkin-ness, and just starting with Raphael.
All the excitement in Kate's world with a few small Easter eggs that appear later. Such as the apple pies.
We also get a tour through the casino and some new monsters. There is Cerberus and a hydra. Very cool!
The twist at end is especially cool!

3 stars - Andrea and Raphael adventure for fans of the Kate Daniels world

This short story featured Andrea Nash and Raphael Medrano, the alpha of the shapeshifter hyena clan (aka boudas). Andrea had been introduced in book #2 - - as Kate's new colleague in the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid but Andrea has the full ranking of a Knight. A friendship was forged on the basis of mutual respect and because Kate kept Andrea's secret. By book #3 - , they're best friends. Raphael has been smitten with her since they met during Andrea's emergency two months ago. He oozes sex appeal, but Andrea has held steadfast against his degenerate bouda ways.

In this story, readers get insight into Andrea's history and mindset. She needs to make peace with her true self, her closely guarded secret, but the consequences of a decision are enormous. What better way to decide than by fighting alongside Raphael against Cerberus, a 3-headed dog the size of a house?

I had a feeling I liked Andrea and now it's confirmed. She is hard and soft at the same time. And what's sexier than a drop-dead gorgeous, genuine Casanova changing his lifestyle after meeting The Woman? This book toys with women's desire to be The One to change the notorious playboy.

Also, it's fast-paced, full of action and mythology. A winning combination if you ask me.

“Could you get any more full of yourself?
“I’m mostly interested in getting you full of me.

While Kate is on medical leave, Andrea is taking her cases. And her current one forces her to team up with the very sexy Raphael, who she has been trying to avoid, to solve the mystery of what a giant three-headed dog is doing in Atlanta.

Ever since meeting Raphael, the son of the Alpha Bouda, he has been driving her crazy with his phone calls and his flirting. It takes everything she is not to give into the sizzling attraction between them. He has a reputation of being a player, and Andrea doesn’t want to be another notch on his bedpost.

“You’ve made yourself into a new person and so have I. We deserve a fucking chance. I want you and you want me. Why aren’t we together? I’ll deal with your hang-ups if you’ll deal with mine

Andrea is such an interesting and kick-ass character. And I really enjoyed getting to know her better in this novella. Andrea is a beastkin, who is usually killed by other shapeshifters. Because of who her father was, and who she is, she had a terrible childhood, one that made her very distrustful of other shapeshifters.

I love how Raphael has been pursuing Andrea, and how since meeting her there has been no-one else for him. Their romance was so sexy and I’m so glad that they finally got together.

I love this world and all its characters. Especially Aunt B who is very interesting, so I’m very glad that we got to see a more vulnerable side to her.

This is a fantastic novella, and a must read for all fans of this series. If you have not read this series yet, you are missing out one on one of the best UF series EVER! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Ah novellas. I both love and hate you.

I thought a new POV was refreshing. I like Andrea's character. She has a heartbreaking backstory and I love how she feels about guns. Just... I wish she felt less like a mini-Kate. I get she's a Knight so of course she's going to be a badass and to be fair she doesn't know as much about mythology as Kate, but I don't know. Maybe it's hard to go from reading a bunch of Kate Daniels to popping into someone else's head. I feel like from Kate's view, Andrea has seemed like a different character, but once in Andrea's head, I didn't see the difference enough.

I loved Raphael in this though. He's a more bubbly male character than I think any of the other men in this world are. His speech to Andrea was perfect and heart-melty. I was more on her side before that happened. Now they're obviously lobsters.

The story was interesting and well-paced for a novella. I just always want more than the page-limits give. I'm looking forward to seeing how/if it plays out in the KD world.

Audiobook: Narrator - Johanna Parker

Nice job of narrating. Took me a bit to realize this was a different narrator than the one that does Kate. I thought it was Ms. Raudman casting her voice as Andrea instead of Kate. I enjoyed listening to her and the length of the book had me finished with it in no time at all.

I loved this novella about Andrea and Raphael. It was filled with drama, suspense, action, a little bit sexy times, and plenty of shifting goodness. There is nothing lightweight about it. While I’ve fallen absolutely in love with Kate, I have to admit, Andrea is one tough heroine in her own right. And holy heck...Raphael is the perfect partner for her. I’ve had some warnings regarding characters possibly dying as this series moves forward, lets just say this couple better not be on the chopping block!

3.5 stars.

I liked this short story featuring Andrea and Raphael from the Kate Daniels series.

The story was interesting enough with Andrea investigating a call about a shape shifter being attacked by a giant dog. The dog turned out to be a Hell Hound and and the shape shifter to be Raphael. Throw in a master of the dead gone bad and some Greek Gods and there was plenty to keep this interesting.

I really enjoyed the continuation of the romance between Andrea and Raphael which had begun in the main KD series. In fact I like this couple better than Kate and Curran.

Audio Note: I listened to this as part of the and thought Johanna Parker gave a good performance. It's a pity she does not narrate all of the KD's audiobooks.

I will never tire of these characters.

This is the story of Andrea Nash. A Knight of the Order, Beastkin and best friend of Kate Daniels.

This is the beginning of her story, and her dancing back and forth with hot ass Bouda shifter Raphael, who has been relenting in his attempts to get her into his bed.

The story is full with action. With gun-fights, claw-fights and vampires!
I am so impressed over the short amount of pages, and yet we get a full on powerful story with hurt, love and pain. It was BADASS.

Will I recommend: This is the most banging Urban Fantasy out there, so hell yeah! (Love the shit out of Nalini Singh, Larissa Ione and Karen Chance too)

Andrea and Raphael are two of my favourite characters in the Kate Daniels series. For some reason, Andrea's book is one I keep returning to - I'm currently rereading it for AT LEAST the third time.

This novella is one I don't think I realised existed for a while. It tells us exactly when Raphael and Andrea get together, and provides great background to their main novel.

I really like Andrea before but this novella gave a great insight into her character and I just love her. 5 stars.

“Would you say the shapeshifter was in distress?
“Hell yeah, he was in distress. His tail was on fire.
“He ran like his tail was on fire?
“No, his tail was on fire. Like a big, furry candle on his ass.
