Review #1 - March 2012
By the end I was almost ready to give this book five stars. The concluding chapter packed a powerful emotional punch.
I think what I love most about Brandon Mull's books is that it's easily believable. There is no wasted space on boring histories of the world, Lyrian just...is. It exists, Jason and Rachel are there, displacers, manglers, Edomic....it all seems perfectly natural. I felt like I understood the world perfectly. Sometimes fantasy series spend so much time trying to explain the world, that the story is lost. Brandon Mull never has that problem.
Also, I honestly don't know how this series will end. I'm scared for the third book because I've grown to love so many of the characters that I don't want them to die. I'm hoping that Brandon Mull doesn't choose to make it needlessly tragic. From the way Fablehaven concluded, I don't think he will, but I'm still a little nervous.
I like the subtle lessons that we learn in this book. It's not dogmatic or lecturing at all, but it's a story of heroes, people who consistently put the welfare of all above their own. People who live for a higher purpose and sacrifice much for it. Jason and Rachel knew nothing of this world and yet chose to remain to help them. In a world that is full of entitlement and seeking personal satisfaction, it is a good reminder about what is most important.
I think Brandon Mull is a fantastic writer and I appreciate that his books appeal to boys and girls. I'm excited for the final installment in this series.

This world is so rich, so fun, and Brandon Mull's imagination is so vast that I kept thinking, "This book should be better."
And when I was reminded of the language of this book as I read "The Magic Treehouse" to my 4 year old, I decided that what Brandon Mull really has is an editing problem.
His editor for Fablehaven is not the same as for this series, and I just can't help but think that this is the main problem. The sentence structures are inconsistent, with language ranging from cluttered and sloppy to just plain bad. And the pacing isn't as choppy as the first, but after an exciting battle, we grind to a screeching halt as we traipse through the jungle, and it's so boring that I skipped a few pages just to get to something that I could tolerate reading. Somebody should have caught that.
It's disappointing, because there is so much that is good in this book, and this series had the potential to be something amazing. But as I said before, when the language detracts from the storytelling, you know you have a problem.
In his notes, Brandon Mull said that he has been working on this idea for close to a decade, so I know this is something close to his heart. But the fact that it has taken him this long to churn it out makes me wonder if he couldn't quite wrap his brain around how to tell the story. And the way this series is filling out only confirms my suspicions--he doesn't know quite how to tell it, and so it doesn't gel as well as it should. And his editor didn't help. At. All. Seriously, there were some really cringe-worthy sentences in this book that don't belong in a book written by an author as talented as Brandon Mull.
But I'll admit I was more invested in the characters than I was in the previous book, and Rachel's character is turning into something kinda cool. I was interested enough to keep reading (and seriously, how cool were Galloran's sword fights? Super cool, I tell you what), and I'll read the final installment when it comes out next year. I thought he delivered Fablehaven's conclusion in a very satisfying way, so I'll hold out hope that this things crystallizes and comes together in a way that is pleasing to both the author and the reader.
But, Brandon, for heaven's sake, get a better editor.

Brandon has a very active, creative imagination. All kinds of strange things show up in these books. There’s lots of adventure and good characters, though it felt a little slow at times.

Brandon Mull has created an amazing world, and some amazing races. I think that as far as fantasy worlds go, this is one of the best laid out and most imaginative. The different people and food descriptions are so detailed, I feel like I am there meeting them, eating the food, and saving the world.
So, why only three stars? I have been having a difficult time connecting with the characters. Something I loved about the Fablehaven series that Brandon Mull wrote was that the characters and world were amazingly intertwined. I cared about the characters, got annoyed with Seth, and always appreciated a scene with the satyrs. I am struggling to make those connections with these characters.
Prehaps it's because the author has been trying to get this series out for ten years, we spent so much time building this amazing world, and then struggled to fit the main characters in.
I will read the next book, happily. I have a feeling that the characters will really rise up in the last book. It seems like Brandon Mull has been building the world in the first two, and the characters will shine in the third. I'm hoping.

I decided to give it 3 stars because this was 90% just not a match for the first book;
It was not as well written, and most of the book was not as interesting, but it was still pretty good - almost a 4-starer. And that ending, one of the best endings I have seen in fantasy, just amazed me. Can't wait to read the last book of the trilogy! Rating: 3.6 stars

Since i have no template for my reviews over here, i will have to do this without it.
I always went pass these books in my bookstore. Both in my language and in english. I decided I wanted to read the english version more. I do not regret my decision. I loved both first and second book. I hope the third book will prove to be a satisfying conclusion. Then i am sure i will buy the whole set on my language for sure.
This book does not suffer from bridge book effect. It was an essential addition to the story and fantastically done.
More and more i love the characters, but can I tell you all how much I love Ferrin, Tark, Aram, Drake and Rachel and Jason, and also Galloran? Basically I love all the main characters, and I feel like Galloran and Ferrin will always have a special place in my heart.
Also the covers are faithful to the scenes that happen. Which I love, since the first two covers are not nonsensical at all.
I love the plot, love the characters, love the ideas. And i really love the bad guy. He's a very interesting villain. Love the races idea (although displacers always make me laugh because Buggy from One Piece has the very similar ability hahahahah), and I love torivors and displacers, and dringlings etc etc.
These books are fun, exciting, emotional and dark. What more do you need? Loveable characters are here, plot is steady and fast paced, and it was over before I knew it. Sigh. I need the next book right now.

دنیای جادویی که نویسنده ساخته بود، جالب بود. موجودات جالب و جدید که توی کتابای دیگه مثل اونا رو ندیده بودم. مثل پیوندزن ها که اجزای بدن شون قابل جدا کردن بود، یا مردم دونه دار که با کاشته شدن دونه شون عمر مجدد میکردن و...
شخصیت ها هم جالب بودن. مخصوصا جیسون. نکته جالب اینه که جیسون هیچ نیروی جادویی یا خاصی نداره. (چیزی که توی داستان های فانتزی نوجوانانه خیلی پیش نمیاد.) اما میتونه مثل یک قهرمان رفتار کنه؛ دوستانش رو همراهی میکنه؛ بهشون انگیز�� میده. جیسون وارد دنیای ماورایی شده که با میل خودش مجدد به اون وارد شده. درحالی که میتونست بی خیال مردم بیچاره ی سرزمین ماورایی و ظلم های امپراتورش بشه. چنین روحیه ای باعث میشه دیگرانی هم به قیام علیه امپراتور بپیوندن.
شخصیت فرین هم جالب بود. کسی که خیانت و دورویی تو ذاتشه. اون خودش رو وفادار به قیام معرفی میکنه. اما اعتماد به خائن ممکنه یک خود فریبی باشه. تضادها و درگیری هایی که با خودش داره، شخصیتش رو کاملا واقعی کرده. فرین می خواد وفادار باشه؛ به جیسون و گالوران. اما میدونه که ممکنه هر سربزنگاه به اونا خیانت کنه.
و گالوران. پیر خردمند داستان. آروم و پ��صلابت. بچه تر که بودم معمولا عاشق پیرای خرمند داستان میشدم مثل دامبلدور و گندالف. اینجا هم تقریبا همین طور بود. گالوران شکست ناپذیر نیست. قبلا شکست خورده، تحقیر شده و سال ها زندانی بوده. اما می خواد دوباره تلاش کنه، ارتشی جمع کنه و علیه امپراتور مبارزه کنه.

Brandon Mull has done it again! Just when I thought things couldn't get better after reading the first book, Mr. Mull did a finer job with this one. It was really exciting and really hard to put down. While I was reading it, I was torn between the decision of finishing the book and to literally force myself to put it down, for the fear of having it to end. Brandon Mull has done it again! Just when I thought things couldn't get better after reading the first book, Mr. Mull did a finer job with this one. It was really exciting and really hard to put down. While I was reading it, I was torn between the decision of finishing the book and to literally force myself to put it down, for the fear of having it to end. I’ve been waiting exactly a year for the second Beyonders book. I read A World Without Heroes at family camp last year. This year I checked out Seeds of Rebellion to read at camp once again. We leave today but, ahem, I finished the book last night. Drat! I did have a little trouble recalling details from the first book. People and places were mentioned that I couldn’t remember right away, but most of the time I figured them out through context. I fear I’ll have the same trouble next time; the final book of the trilogy releases in the spring of 2013.
This one felt a little nebulous. After the very definite quest of book one, I felt like Jason’s return to Lyrian didn’t really have much point. He was such a brave hero in the first go-round, but this time he’s more of a tag-along, a liability almost, dependent on others stronger than himself. They all seem stronger than him. Rachel discovers a powerful knack for the magical language; Aram, the half-giant, is a bastion of strength—at least half the time; Ned has tremendous cunning and knowledge of poisons; Tark turns out rather courageous; Ferrin the displacer is irreplaceable; and even old, blind Galloran finds unexpected strength and resolve. But no one seemed to have much of a plan about how to defeat Maldor.
Once the tiny group of rebels assembles, they journey to the land of the Seed People—they know they need all the allies they can gather—and they find plenty of adventure along the way. But when the Amar Kabal hesitate to join them and openly defy Maldor, a mixed company is formed to travel to the oracle and learn whether resistance against the evil wizard has even the slightest chance of success. They make it to the oracle, barely, and learn they have one chance in a million, which is more than they hoped for. But to succeed, they must split forces. Two tasks must be accomplished, one by Galloran and one by Jason, if they are to succeed. And I was rather glad to hear it. That means the little band with have a purpose once again in book three, and Jason will return to prominence.
Though I enjoyed book one more (once I got into it), this one did keep me reading. There are plenty of casualties, but the few squeamish moments of book one are absent. It’s a bit milder. In his Author’s Note, Mr. Mull mentions that he’s been working on this series ten years. That’s amazing, and I applaud his efforts. But I’m afraid the series will never place among my favorites. I do have to say he knows how to plug in excitement; the wandering band finds danger at every turn. And he’s endlessly creative. But the humor is just a bit bland, and the series never attains much depth. It does have purpose—defeat the Great Evil—and it has danger and magic, courage and honor, but those deep moments of reflection, of inner discovery, are few and far between. I must mention a very nicely written scene, however, in which Ferrin is examining his motives for betraying Maldor and joining the rebellion. He’s uncertain of himself and his loyalties. In my opinion, that is the most powerful, most emotional, most honest moment in the series. I wish there were more like it.

I really, really wanted to love this, but... I didn't :(
I was a huge fan of Brandon Mull's Fablehaven and enjoyed his first Beyonders novel. I was excited to check out his next book, and freaked out when I received this in the mail, my very first ARC :) . Unfortunately, the problems that started with the first book persisted through the second, and I found it difficult to finish.
My main issue was the character development, or lack of, I should say. The author seemed to skip over his characters to focus on his plot, which I found irritating. Jason, our hero, is portrayed as an ordinary young teenager, to the point it's extremely boring. I'd rather read about an interesting character who was also relatable than a character who is basically so 'normal' he doesn't even feel real. The other characters aren't characterized enough either and it took away from the story since I simply didn't care about them. Unlike Fablehaven, where Seth and Kendra might have felt a little cliche at first, they really grew by the end of the series into likable, relatable heroes, Jason and Rachel simply didn't work for me.
The secondary characters had some interesting bits, but on the whole, were rather forgettable. Fablehaven is populated with a memorable supporting cast, while this book, set in a fantasy world, could have chose to use some really fascinating characters, but failed to. I don't know what I was expecting, a LOTR style ensemble perhaps, but that seems farfetched since this is a kids book. Overall, the characters weren't the kind who you would remember long after reading.
The plot; in times it was interesting, but in times felt slow and dragging. Brandon Mull certainly has an imagination and I found myself enjoying his creative world. It certainly feels similar to Narnia, Middle-Earth or any other medieval fantasy world, but it had it's own uniqueness too, including the beings who populate it. Speaking of unique and creative, the entire idea of 'the word' and the cliffhanger at the end of the first book, were a perfect set up for a sequel. Unfortunately for me, the sequel didn't deliver on the level I had hoped it would.
The writing style was so-so for me. It wasn't exactly riveting, but not badly written either. Honestly, I found I preferred the writing in his other books.
Overall, not a bad book, just not for me. I don't plan on reading the final book, but I will, however, check out any new series Brandon writes, especially if he continues with his Fablehaven books (since I'm dying to know what happens with Kendra&Bracken, Seth, Vanessa&Warren, the Sphinx, who the new Eternals are, and so much more!)

Jason kembali ke rumah, setelah kembali dari petualangannya di Lyrian. When I finally finished reading this I was wheezing, I hadn't noticed I had held my breath as I just blasted through these pages like mad because it was just that painful of a read. How is this STILL flat? Already had low expecations set by the first book but this just maintained and dragged it into the we're-gotta-need-a-goddamn-miracle-here-boys-and-gals kind of pinch for me. I just...I don't know where this has gone wrong. I mean it's written well as far as I can see (except for those few instances where I found editing mistakes, like how did you seriously miss those?!).
All in all, it builds on from the first book, but again--like many others before it--this book suffers from second-book syndrome. It's awful to get infected with. Honestly, I think this could have been basically a duology for most part. There's so many characters now that you just have to go back and reread after you noticed something vital happened to them--at that point I wasn't really caring and just sped-read to insanity, just trying to find a point I could care and liked. Unfortunately there weren't too many of those. x:
It's a shame, but I now embark on the final book--before I dive back into the Fablehaven books (I just noticed they arrived today).

Wow! I enjoyed this much more than I expected. I expected to enjoy it, but since it is the second (and middle book) in the trilogy, I didn't think it would be quite as exciting as it turned out to be.
Brandon Mull did a great job of reminding me about events from the first book without spending too much time rehashing the past. And I enjoyed the fact that the hippo was used again! :)
For those who have read book one in the series, you definitely need to read this! I look forward to book three.

Alright. I take it back. I love this narrator. Most--if not all--of my complaints from the first book are nonexistent in Seeds of Rebellion! Yay! The writing improved a lot too. I feel like it wasn't as awkward or forced. I liked the story better too; It was so much more entertaining and kept me on the edge of my seat all day! Plus there's the fact that it seemed a little more believable (not that anything about this series is believable :p). I'm a little disgusted about some things in the book, like worm-infected zombies.....among other things. But it was great! And more cliff hangers. Thanks a lot, Mull. Thankfully I have the next audiobook available as well. Really the only complaint I have about Seeds of Rebellion is Rachel's character arc. It came out of absolutely nowhere and I don't think it matches her character very well. Oh well. I'm willing to forgive that :p
Overall, I enjoyed Seeds of Rebellion a million times better than A World Without Heroes and I can't wait to read Chasing the Prophesy!

This is just as fun as book one of the series, with a large cast of characters that Mull manages to make distinctive and interesting. The story is also very much a quest, as was book one, with lots of peril and unusual creatures and races (including a unique take on zombies). Again, if you are a fan of the Fablehaven books, you'll definitely enjoy this series. And if you enjoyed the first book, you won't be disappointed with this one.

Overall great book. I personally enjoyed it more than the first and it’s a great lead up to the final book of the series. My one complaint was the lack of conflict caused by the ending of the first book. The first book seemed to hang off on a cliffhanger and could’ve led to a really cool plot line, but it was resolved in the first or second chapter.

Melanjutkan petualangan dari "A World Without Heroes" (review ), Jason sekali lagi kembali ke Lyrian. Misinya kali ini adalah untuk membawa pesan tentang rahasia Maldor kepada sang Raja Buta, rahasia yang dapat mengubah seluruh alur pertentangan dengan Maldor.
Suka banget. Ceritanya masih tetap seru dan bikin betah untuk dibaca. Dalam 2 hari saja saya bisa menyelesaikan buku setebal 676 halaman ini.
Di buku ke-2 ini ada banyak perkembangan yang terjadi. Misi yang Jason dan Rachel jalani berkembang menjadi lebih besar. Semakin banyak dan beragam teman perjalanan yang muncul dengan satu tujuan yang sama: menumbangkan Maldor dan mengembalikan kedamaian Lyrian.
Saya suka dengan karakter-karakter baru yang muncul di sini. Favorit saya adalah Aram, si setengah raksasa yang bertubuh besar dan berotot di malam hari, tapi ceking dan kecil di saat matahari tampak di langit.
Ceritanya mungkin tidak se-wah buku pertama, tapi tetap menghibur dan seru karena penuh dengan petualangan yang keren.

Harus jujur kukatakan kalau buku ini lebih inferior daripada buku pertama. :(
Meskipun pada dasarnya buku ini tetaplah sebuah karya yang solid, ceritanya seru, dan secara keseluruhannya tetap menarik, namun Beyonders #2 ini seperti kejebak ke dalam kerangka standar buku kedua sebuah trilogi.
Kehilangan magis dari buku pertama dan fungsi utamanya hanya untuk build-up momentum buku terakhir. :|
Seeds of Rebellion berkisah seperti judulnya, yakni tentang benih-benih pemberontakan yang tumbuh di Lyrian selepas kembalinya Jason ke Lyrian (dengan terlampau mudah, eniwei) dan terkuaknya rahasia besar kata kunci yang dicari-cari orang di buku pertama.
Benih-benih pemberontakan untuk melawan penjahahan dan okupansi Maldor ditebar oleh lawan utamanya, pastinya, Galloran sang Blind King yang berlangsung ke seluruh penjuru Lyrian.
Karena masif-nya daratan yang dijangkau di buku kedua ini, maka isi dari buku ini lebih banyak tentang perjalanan dari satu tempat ke tempat lainnya yang dilakukan olehfellowship of the ring rombongan Galloran, tanpa adanya satu plot utama yang penting seperti di buku pertama.
Pengetahuan lebih dalam tentang bahasa sihir Edomic jelas merupakan salah satu poin menarik dari buku ini, namun tanpa adanya plot utama yang menciptakan klimaks yang dinanti-nanti, belum lagi dengan ending tentang ramalan yang berasa terlalu safe dan flat, serta sensasi humor yang berkurang, dan pemindahan channelsecara maksa ke show TV The Walking Dead, akhirnya buku ini menjadi berasa standar dan kurang memukau. One thing I really like about Brandon Mull is that his writing is so inventive and it feels different. He's got a crazy good imagination, and it shines through in his writing, especially in this series. There are none of the typical elves, dwarves, and wizards. There are fantasy races in this book that are completely different, and if I'm honest, so different I can't even picture them. But that's not a bad thing. It's great to read something new and fresh.
The writing is solid and there's a lot of action here. The characters are dealing with one thing after another, and things very rarely slow down for them. There were so many different areas of Lyrian that we visited in the first book that you'd almost think there'd be nothing new to explore in the second. Not so, as we visit new and exciting places and get to experience new adventures right along with the characters. Okay, not literally, which is probably good cause I'd be scared out of my mind if I was living this story. Curled up in a ball hoping to wake up soon kind of scared. But of course, in books, characters are always braver and able to do things that normal people just don't do. That's why we all love these stories. We get to live adventure after adventure and travel the world and visit fantasy worlds and it's wonderful! And this is one of those books that makes me happy that I read.

There were so many different areas of Lyrian that we visited in the first book that you'd almost think there'd be nothing new to explore in the second. Not so, as we visit new and exciting places and get to experience new adventures right along with the characters. Okay, not literally, which is probably good cause I'd be scared out of my mind if I was living this story. Curled up in a ball hoping to wake up soon kind of scared. But of course, in books, characters are always braver and able to do things that normal people just don't do. That's why we all love these stories. We get to live adventure after adventure and travel the world and visit fantasy worlds and it's wonderful! And this is one of those books that makes me happy that I read.

Reread February 2019: I still very much enjoyed this second volume. I'm going to leave my original 5 star rating, but I think this go 'round would be a 4 star rating from me. I love Aram in the first half of the book a lot. I don't know how I'd forgotten about him since I read this the first time.
The second half of the book is following a lot of characters all together, so you don't get to spend much time with any one of them. But I still had a fun adventure alongside the characters. I still love all the different types of beings in this world, and I like that it uses them to somewhat address ethnocentrism. A lot of this book is moving characters to gear up for the final book though, so there isn't much/anything wrapped up at the end. It's actually more of a "dun dun duuuun" ending. Galloran is a total boss, and I'm excited to reread the final book in this trilogy when I get the chance.

FINALLY! I'm finished with this book! Not in a sense that it put me in a slump and was bad--absolutely not! This thing called 'Life' happened and is happening, still, and it drove me away from reading; I could barely concentrate or focus whenever I could or had time to read. Which sucks because I'm loving this series and I do enjoy Brandon Mull's writing and world building.
Speaking of which, This second book does focus heavily on the world building. Only now, putting the book down and finished, I do see the formula more obviously. (first plot introducing the plot; second book focuses on characters and the word; so, the third will focus on finishing the plot.) But, so what if I notice this? It's still fun to read; it's fun to read how big the world of Lyrian is. Galloran was a badass in this book (Chapter 26 reminded me of The Order vs Death Eaters in HP5).

Though I loved the first installment in 'Beyonders' trilogy, 'Seeds of Rebellion' wasn't as great as I was expecting it to be; but still I enjoyed it a lot and look forward to read the last book.
Brandon Mull is a very talented writer and always has a very unique imagination in creating fantastic characters. His 'Fablehaven' series are my most favorite YA/children fantasy books and he hasn't disappointed me in 'Beyonders' so far.
