Great series! An awesome and interesting storyline that dealt with what brotherhood meant -- this was the best book in the series i think because of the good storytelling and writing (paperback!)
Translation widget on The blog!!!
TW: SEXUAL ABUSE, SCENES OF SEXUAL ASSAULT Upon the death of their adopted father, Cameron, Ethan, and Philip Quinn have to band together to take care of Ray Quinn's ten-year-old ward, Seth. Each book in the Chesapeake Bay Saga series focuses on each brother tackling their demons and finding romance. But Seth's biological mother, Gloria is always there ready to ruffle the feathers of the Quinn family.
Rising Tides is Ethan's story and I must admit that I was looking forward to learning more about the introverted Quinn brother. More comfortable on a boat than on the shore, Ethan has for a long time loved from afar Grace Monroe, a single mother who cleans the Quinn homestead. Grace also finds herself attracted to Ethan. But waiting for Ethan to make the first move might just need a firm push.
I am not going to pretend that after reading this installment in the series, I do have some feelings of unease. Nora Roberts doesn't shy away from tough subjects and her main protagonist, Ethan experienced a lot in his childhood before Stella and Ray Quinn took him in. The scene in the book where Ethan reveals his back story to Grace is absolutely heartbreaking. That pain does in some ways eclipse the romance and even though I knew there would be a happy ending, I wasn't sure that I wanted this story so rushed. For that reason, I gave the story three stars.
Rising Tides is the second book in Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Bay / Quinn Brothers saga. It features the middle brother, Ethan, who was the 2nd boy rescued by Ray and Stella Quinn and given a new life. He's the epitome of the saying "still waters run deep." Ethan may be able to hold his own in a fight with his brothers, but he prefers to take things slow, to think them through and doesn't see the need to chatter unless there's something that really needs to be said. He's battered and scarred from a tragic childhood that haunts him to this day. The abuse he suffered has kept him from acting on his feelings for young single mother Grace Monroe, but with Seth in the picture, Ethan finds that not only has his life drastically changed, but he can't keep his feelings for Grace a secret any longer.
This is yet another highly enjoyable book from Nora Roberts. I liked it almost as much as book 1 in the series. Ethan is such an interesting character. At times he's just as rough and tumble as Cam but at other times, he's a quiet loner. His tragic childhood is heartbreaking and it makes you just want to give him a big hug (and maybe a kiss or two...). When it comes to his relationship with Grace, you can really see how the past still haunts him and causes endless conflict. Roberts played that out perfectly, especially the resolution.
Normally I don't enjoy books with kids in them, but Grace's daughter Aubrey is just too cute for words. I really liked her small parts in the book. And I liked Grace as well. She was a real sweetheart.
One of the great things about this book, and common to NR trilogy books, is that even though the book focuses on one couple (in this case Ethan and Grace) you still get plenty of the other characters. They are still a basis of the story. It really helps you to know them better and develops this amazing sense of family and togetherness.
And another great thing about the book is the progression of Seth's story. It was touching to read about how much he's improved since the Quinn's took him in. He's growing and starting to put the past behind him. I love the interactions he has with everyone. For a 10-year-old, he's a really strongly developed character.
If you read and enjoyed Sea Swept then you should definitely read this book, and you'll most likely enjoy it. It is a great continuation of the series and just an all-round nice romance to read.
Another great book in the series. And another sudden ending, but I'm getting used to it since all stories are connected and the character stories don't end with each book as they appear through all 4 books.
This time story focus is on Ethan, the second brother, continuing directly after the last book ended. And I loved it. I admit I was frustrated sometimes with the beating around the bush thing going on between the two center characters but I also loved it and I'm glad I read this story too. The other side of the story was focused on Seth, although a bit less than the first book.
There is a lot of darkness in each one of the brothers pasts and whenever they are happy, it makes me happy as well.
Nora deals with some heavy themes in these books as each and every single brother in Quinn's household went through many traumatic events of each kind. But they went through the worst and darkest parts in their lives and stepped into the light with the help provided by two people who only wanted to save lost souls. And Ethan has definitely one of the worst pasts out of everyone. And Nora dealt with his traumas as it should and concluded his story as was necessary. And Seth is strongly developed character for a 10 year old kid and whenever he is happy, it makes me happy. All of the brothers and the people around them deserve to be happy.
â– STORY:
The story continues right after the wedding of Cameron and Anna. After leaving on the honeymoon, Ethan Quinn was left to deal with Seth most of the days. Phillip works during the work days in other city, and comes only at weekend. But Ethan doesn't mind that - he could use some peace and quiet. The boat building business the three (now four) of them started was going smoothly and the situation settles down for a bit.
Ethan has admired their housekeeper from afar - is in love with her for years, but his traumatic past makes him unable to approach her and tell her the truth. And Grace Monroe is a single mother of a child, divorced and alone. But doing fine, quite fine, despite being in strained relationship with her own father. If only Ethan would realize she set her eyes on him years ago.
Seth is doing fine, much better than before, but there is still a looming threat above their heads concerning Seth's mother and her schemes to get what she wants.
The plot takes place 3 months after the death of Ray Quinn.
â– CHARACTERS:
â— Ethan, 30 years old, was saved when he was 12 from the past that brutally broke him physically as well as mentally. He was saved by the kindness of Quinns, but they could never fix him completely. He still has nightmares and the emotional scars left have scarred him worse than anything. Afraid of perusing relationship, he could only stand by and be friends with the woman he loves. Afraid of ruining her and tainting her because of what happened him, he stays calculated, calm, patient and alone. Painfully alone. His past affects everything he does - making him a person who would rather be alone that hurt anyone unwillingly. He is painfully shy, very concerned and overly protective when it comes to people he loves, but when it comes to Grace Monroe, he just loses it whenever something bad happens... Which often leads to saying things that definitely sound wrong in her ears - the exact things she really, really doesn't want to hear. Ethan has known Grace for years... Having almost 8 years difference only made him wait for longer... but he is still very afraid to approach her on that matter and say three simple things: "i love you." He is absolutely captivated by her daughter and loves her a lot. While he can express himself wrongly, he does know when to say things at the right time, no matter how much it hurts him.
â— Grace, 22 year old single mother, is a family friend of Quinns for years. Being their house keeper and cleaning up whenever she can, that being her job, she took on more jobs to survive. Having a strained and difficult relationship with her own father after she got divorced after giving birth to her beautiful daughter Aubrey, made her only more determined to show that she can do everything alone. Her pride wouldn't take no for an answer. And her stubbornness even more so. Despite her pride and stubbornness, she takes everything said to her to heart and is quick to come to conclusions, but is also strong and very defiant and when she needs to prove a point, she doesn't back down from the fight. But, she is now very afraid that she would lose her job to Anna, having just married into the family and being concurrence for the house touches... And that would make her unable to find excuses anywhere near Ethan whom she admired for years.
â— Seth is getting more and more relaxed after finally realizing that the brothers, now his brothers, won't give up on him and that he would not return to his mother by their choice. Making friends and rocking at school, and drawing the ships for his new brothers, he is getting accustomed to his new life nicely, but nightmares still come to him and he has still that wary look in the eyes. What he needed the most was someone who had survived what he had - and Ethan, despite the pain it brings him to share his past with anyone, would tell him about it rather than let the guilt and fear stab Seth from the inside. He needed to know, so he could connect with someone who went through something similar and open up a bit more. {I am so, so damn glad he }
â— Quinn family: Cam and Anna function greatly together and they are wonderful that way. They complete each other up. Anna shows her support many times through the book, knocking the sense in Ethan and Grace and being a little Cupid. Cam and Phillip are quite supportive over Seth's situation and are still fighting for him, no matter what and are getting to enjoy their new business even more so.
â— Monroe family: While the relationship is quite broken between father and daughter, it's not so strained between mother and daughter who shows support to her whenever she can.
â– OVERALL:
Wonderful book - I can't wait to read the other two book left in the series. All of these babies deserve a happy ending.

"Words count, though. Who would know that better than a man who spent his life trying to teach the young the love of them?"
I love when authors use words to explain the importance of words. I know that seems like such a silly statement, but authors rarely recognize how much their stories can mean to us in a story they write. When they do, I can't help but love the story all the more.
Rising Tides picks up right where Sea Swept left off. The search for answers about Seth as well as the grief for losing their father. Seth is feeling at home, and settling in nicely, and to watch his story move is such a joy. He's a little boy that never had enough joy, a little boy with a mind far beyond his years for inappropriate and terrible reasons. To have found a home and constantly have it on the verge of being taken away... I love how the brothers constantly take on the worry so Seth doesn't have to.
I loved the bonding between Ethan and Seth in this one so much. Whether it be the mirroring of their situations in the uplifting moments, or the heart breaking ones, I was here for all of it. I loved that Ethan's love for Seth, his respect for him, allowed him to see himself in a different way. Accept his circumstances and allow love to come into his life.
As this book was written 25 years ago, it was very difficult to relate to Grace in this one. I don't find myself having the same ideals as she does, but with that being said, I admire all that she did in her circumstances. Her drive to prove the men in her life wrong was her form of power, and I'm so happy she never let anyone take that from her. No matter the circumstances. What an incredible mother, what a special person to take such incredible care with another.
And Ethan and Grace finding so much love for each other. That was so special to read! I can't wait to see what is next for the Quinn's... and I absolutely cannot wait to see what path Seth's story takes next.
The second book in the series picks up right where left off - Anna and Cam are on their honeymoon, Phillip is commuting to the house on the bay every weekend to help build the new boat and care for their new brother, Seth. Seth is finally blending into his new family with help from Ethan, the steady, thoughtful, fisherman/craftsman who now has his eyes set on something more than just the next crab pot. But can he let go of his past in order to finally move forward?
What I Liked: -The character development. Ethan and Grace are clearly the focus of this book, and we learn about their depth of emotion and past struggles. And we also continue to learn more about all the other characters that were introduced in the first book as well. The series continues to build on itself without feeling crowded or rushed. -The little nuances of NR's writing. We get to see, hear, and smell everything: Grace's bruised leg, the clumsy puppy chasing balls, the manic bird closing out the day, the lemony scent of perfume in the air, the warm colors of the sinking sun. These small touches are what makes good books even better.
What I Could Have Done Without: -The cigar smoking by the MC. This is a personal thing and doesn't have any bearing on the story itself; however, since it's my review...
What I Wanted More Of: -I am trying so hard to be patient with learning about Seth's true paternity. Common sense tells me that this all-too-important fact won't be revealed until the 4th book in the series, (where Seth is the focus), but I'm still chomping at the bit to get more details/hints/clues than we have been given so far.
A solid 3.5 star book. I would know this was Nora Roberts' book even if her name wasn't on the cover. A few points kept it from a higher rating, but those were personal and did not take away from the overall experience of the book. On to !
This book needs a major trigger warning: there is child abuse. Although it's in the past it is still very disturbing. Ethan had a horrific childhood. By the time the Quinn's saved him he was almost dead and completely without hope. They helped him to heal but he still carried a hurt on his soul and never saw himself worthy of love, marriage and especially children. Grace always loved him. A strong single mother. She is willing to work hard and gives heartily to others, but her pride keeps her from Ethan. This is a beautiful love story and hard to put down. 💕
Ray and Stella had taken them in, three half-grown boys, all wild, all damaged, all strangers. And had made them a family.
Oh, my, Grace thought with her nose pressed up against the window. Oh, my. If she’d ever seen two more impressive examples of the male form, she couldn’t say when. She’d only intended to sneak a quick glance. Really. Just one innocent little peek. But then Ethan had peeled off his shirt and...
Another multiple re read I don’t tire of...
This book picks up where the first ended but the pace is different, matching the MCs personalities.
Ethan is a waterman. He literally breaths and lives the sea. Come hell or high water, everyday at dawn he is out on his fishing boat. He is the solitary of the three Quinns brothers. The quite one. Contrary to Cam, he likes to think things thoroughly before making his moves.
“You were meant to be ours. Meant to be here. Took to the water like you’d been born in it. Cam, he always just wanted to go fast, and Phillip preferred to sit back and enjoy the ride. But you... He turned back again, his gaze thoughtful. “You studied every inch of the boat, every wave, every turn of a river. You’d practice tying knots for hours, and nobody had to nag you into swabbing the decks. “It came easy for me, right from the start.
“Christ, you were a spooky kid, Ethan. Quiet as a shadow, deep as a lake.
“And that smile. It takes, like, ten minutes for it to finish moving over his face, and by then, man, you are drooling.
But when he let go...
But, oh, he had a need, one that swamped him like a storm surge and left him floundering.
The gentler, sweeter emotion that shimmered from him was so calmer than that first whip of greed; it only gilded the edges of the yearning he’d stirred.
Grace is a young single mother. She is fiercely independant and working hard to built her baby girl a beautiful future, juggling with as many jobs as she can take. She had a sheltered childhood and it’s seems like she always was in love with Ethan.
“Because she’s rock-steady, pretty as a picture, patient as Job, and she’s got enough humor about life to tickle out yours.
But the fact was, growing up, there had only been two things she’d wanted. The dance, and Ethan Quinn.
“Damn, she’s the best thing that ever happened to you. I don’t just mean the sex, though that’s got to be part of what’s perked you up around here lately. The woman fits you like the proverbial glove.
Her feelings for Ethan are mutual. The problem is Ethan believes he’s too damaged for someone as bright and pure as Grace.
There were shadows in those eyes that Ethan also recognized. The wounded recognized the wounded. He knew that Seth’s life, before Ray had taken him on, had been a nightmare. He’d lived through one himself.
“Sometimes it still comes back on me. Pain and shame. And the sweaty fear of knowing what’s going to happen.
And between Ethan stubborness and Grace shyness, they most certainly need all the help they can get (and that was funny).
“Not saying different. Just saying slow. Seen them moony-eyed over each other since before that boy got his own workboat. Has to be nearly ten years passed. Stella and I –bless her soul had a conversation over it a time or two.
“Rabbits,â€ he said slowly. “Probably.â€ â€Áè²¹²ú²ú¾±³Ù²õ?â€ “Yeah.â€ He shifted uncomfortably, wishing to Christ he’d at least gotten his pants on before she burst in. “Rabbits can be a problem with gardens. They just hop up and help themselves.â€ “Rabbits,â€ she said again. “Could be deer,â€ he added, just a little desperately. “They’d graze over and eat every damn thing down to stubs.â€ Counting on pity, he shot a look at Cam. “Right?â€ (LMAO!)
Seth is still in the heart of the story. Grace is the first woman, he trully trusts and loves and he has more things in commun with Ethan that he thinks. The way he settles in his new life is thrilling as well as heartbreaking.
He didn’t want them to know he was waiting for them or that he was excited that they would be home any minute. But he was. He couldn’t understand why he was all pumped up about it. They’d only been gone a couple of weeks, and Cam was a pain in the ass most of the time anyway.
Seth grabbed his sandpaper and began to work furiously. And blindly. His eyes were dazzled, his heart in his throat. It happened whenever one of them referred to him as a Quinn.
Well, he was going to watch and he was going to see. He could still run if things got sticky. Though the idea of running made his stomach hurt in a way it had never done before. [...] He’d discovered that the Quinns kept their word. It was a new and wonderful concept to him, a promise kept. If they probe it now, he knew it would hurt more than anything had hurt him before.
Better than the first book, I think, but not by a lot. Ethan isn't the demanding jerkwad that Cam is, but he has his own neuroses and it was layered on rather thick. The whole "I'm tragically flawed and must be alone" thing was rather self-indulgent and that stood against every other aspect of his life.
That said, Grace was nine kinds of awesome, even if
Anyway, this is a series where I wouldn't skip and if you read the first, you know pretty much what to expect with this one. I think this one is marginally better, so at least it's moving in the right direction.
A note about Steamy: Medium for me, so Roberts standard, though I think this one ran to three explicit scenes. I finished a few days ago and sadly, I don't remember exactly. While it was a little cheap how the scenes played into Ethan's insecurities in certain ways,
Aw... you know, until I discovered this author I considered myself a practical, levelheaded and down-to-Earth kind of woman. Not all the time, but most of it I try to be reasonable and sensible when I have to make a decision. I never fuss or get distressed on situations that tend to make most people altered and upset. What I'm trying to say is that I'm not of the emotional type, more the analyze-every-freaking-detail-before-making-a-decision type of girl. So then why do I keep getting surprise when I end up all teary-eyed about Nora Robert's books? Where is that woman I just described? Where's the practicality when you get all mushy and soft by reading a book? LOL. All I have to say is that I adore the way this author writes cont-romance and I truly hope she never stops.
While I was worried sick I wouldn't like this book because Ethan and Grace seemed a bit boring and steady, I was thrilled to see I was completely wrong and both of them had temper. It just took them a bit long to find it but it was definitely there. And I adored both of them even more because they ended up being who they were after all the terrible things that happened to them both.
It takes a strong person to become a good one after all the 4 brothers went through, so how not to love them? Seth is becoming an amazing boy as well and even though some trouble will definitely be coming on the next books I have no doubt the 4 of them will be able to solve everything if they stick together. They are an amazing family, brothers of the heart and I respect them even more for having such strong feelings for each other even though they are not blood.
Another sweet read. I liked Ethan and Grace although Ethan was a bit stubborn at times. I know he had a tough upbringing prior to meeting the Quinns, but ...
Interesting storyline about Seth. Want to keep reading so that I find out what the little mystery is but might wait a while. I really think some of these older kindle books should be a bit cheaper!! But that is just me, probably.
Nice to catch up with the characters from the first book.
I am often amazed when I read a Nora Roberts book. The opening of this book is just so lovely in terms of place, feeling, and character. How does she do this so prolifically?
I love that Ethan is a working class hero and so devoted to his family. The loved forever theme is a fun one and Grace is great as well.
Roberts writing shines but I am kept from falling in love with this book because I want to send Ethan to therapy and want what happens at the end of the book to occur in the middle of the book so that we get a love story of acknowledged equals rather than 95% of the story with Ethan doing what he thinks is best instead of evolving.
Marginally better than the first book ... but far from great!
The characters were somewhat annoying and too "goody-goody"! Too much drama between Grace and Ethan and then an overly simplistic solution in the end.
I realized again why Anna (heroine from book#1) was annoying me in the last book! Because she's so pushy and aggressive! For example: Grace tells her that she and Ethan made out but Ethan told her he's not interested and they can't do this again, plus that he rejected her a few times already. Anna says "You should go for what you want ! Go get him! You have the upper hand here! Go seduce him!" And then she lays out the plan on how Grace can seduce Ethan, what she will wear, what perfume, light candles, lure him to her house under false pretenses, etc ... Ok - Ethan said NO on more than one occasion! What makes Anna think it's ok to encourage Grace to keep pushing him!? She doesn't care that Grace will end up looking and acting desperate?!
And then Grace! I get that this is a small town, but - really?? You slept with him and have been "dating" for a few weeks only, yet you expect him to ask you to marry him immediately?! In fact, she tells herself that she is the one who had to seduce him, so she may have to ask him to marry her as well... ummm WHY?? What's the rush?!?!? Why would you rush a poor guy to marry you after 3 weeks of dating ?! Once she does ask him - she goes on to explain to him how "they are not the type of people who have an affair - they are the type of people who need marriage"!! ???? Ummm, what?! It's the 1990's, not the 1930's - since when is dating someone considered "sinful" ?! Hell, even in the '30s they would "woo and court" for more than 3 weeks before proposing marriage!!!!
Now, Ethan was another story - his reason for not wanting to get married was somewhat reasonable... He has huge issues from his past. What I didn't understand was how his HUGE issue ended up being solved after a 10 minute conversation with his pushy sister-in-law-shrink-Anna! Right!!!! One conversation and 30 years of hard-core mental issues - POOF - gone!
And finally - SEth! I understand this kid has issues, but COME ON! What's with him constantly acting out when he sees Grace and Ethan together!? I honestly don't understand why he would be against Grace and Ethan together, but NOT against Cam and Anna together?! WTF?! And the way he acts - disrespectful and insulting - someone should have spanked / punched that kid and taught him a lesson in respect! Also - how is Anna, who is practically Seth's stepmother now, allowed to still be HIS social worker ?! (How she wasn't fired for marrying someone whose case she was on is beyond me, but not only was she not fired, she is also still working the case!!!)
Oh, Nora. Why did you have to go and screw this up for me?
This wasn't what I wanted for them. Ethan had a few too many me-Tarzan-you-Jane moments during the first half of this book, and I wasn't wild about the revelation that Grace had been practically pining for him all these years. (Ethan was too, essentially, but that was already more than clear from book 1).
I was still more into the romance than in the first book, so I did enjoy this for the most part. Unfortunately, it lost another star right around the time Grace started daydreaming in her kitchen about how Ethan might propose, when they'd been together for all of one week.
I am in tears. I knew that it would be very emotional to read it again - even after all those years. But I never thought that it would touch me again like it did, when I read it the first time many years ago. A beautiful and touching saga ...
This is one of the most beautiful series, Nora Roberts has ever written. No matter how long it has been since I´ve read those series the first time, it is always a pleasure to re-read it. And everytime I do so I find something new that catches my eye and get again touched by it.
Nora Roberts writing style in this saga is a bit different from the style her books show today. I am not saying, that´s bad, but as a longtime Nora Roberts fan I can tell the tone today is slightly another. But despite that, this series is beautiful in its setting, shows the perfect amount of feelings, bad situations, what family means and can be like and that there is nothing greater than being loved and to feel it.
After Cam and Anna its now Ethan´s and Grace´s turn to step onto the emotional rollercoaster.
The wellbeing of a young boy is all that matters to the three grown up Quinn brothers Ethan, Cam and Phillip. Each of them went through hell during their childhood and for Ethan, sexual abuse is nothing he doesn´t know. But it also means for him, that he will never have a family of his own and marriage is completely out of the question. So when the woman, whom he loves since many years, starts to tell him, that she wants him and what she wants of him, he is totally out of his usual balance. To know, that he has a monster inside him, that, if unleashed, could hurt her or even worse, could make her hate him, brings back his nightmares and forces him to make a decision. One, Grace does not like.
The story is written in the figural narrative situation and lets the reader know what Ethan and Grace think, how they feel about certain things and what they do to protect the ones they love.
Was the first book embossed with the heat and temper that Cam and Anna have inside them, so is the atmosphere of this second book calmer. Ethan is extremely patient and his self-control kind of scary. The background story is the sexual abuse of little children, drugs and mothers who sell their kids for a shot. Nora Roberts writes with sensitiveness about that horrible topic and shows with great scenes and even better dialogues how the three men handle the new situation, what they do to give Seth a stable and secure home as well as family life and what the changes in their daily life brings to them in return.
The powerful bond that comes with a loving and caring family is shown in a wonderful novel about love, family and what it means to stand for one another, no matter what. Ethan, Phillip and Cam have to step in, as their father Ray dies suddenly after a car accident and leaves them with a promise he gave to young Seth. A promise that´s now up to be kept by the three grown up Quinn brothers.
Although I have to admit, that this second book of the Chesapeake Bay saga isn´t as great as the first book Sea Swept, I still enjoyed reading it very much. And to be honest I count this saga to one of the best Nora Roberts has ever written.
★★★★ Very well narrated by David Stuart. I hesitate to give this 4 stars b/c there are parts that are a tiny bit tedious; nevertheless, I have come to care for these characters of Nora Roberts Chesapeake Bay Saga*, and I certainly want to find out what happens next. I don’t think this book, the second in the series, is a “stand-alone; definitely Ethan and Grace’s on-going story would be enjoyed more if the first one, Sea Swept (Cam & Grace’s story), were read first.
The Quinns are three men, abused as children (some sexually), who were adopted by a loving couple (both now deceased). Each story is how they deal with the ongoing mystery surrounding their father’s car crash (suicide or accident?), and coping with the angst surrounding the last young boy, Seth, their father was in the process of adopting. (Was their dad Seth’s biological father, or is Seth just another lost lamb?) The Quinns have to contend with Seth’s evil drug-addicted, blackmailing mother. Plus, they all have joined together to start a ship building company.
Their father’s ghostly presence appears to each of them in their individual stories, but it is not pervasive, nor this big, paranormal apparition; it is more subtle gentle, if you will than that, making them wonder if they dreamt it all, or just felt his judicious presence. Each book is centered on one of the brothers falling in love with the love of his life.
**The book was originally part of The Quinn Brothers Trilogy, but then Seth’s story was added.
NR already wrote this story, only she titled it The Heart of Devon MacKade. The similarities are far too many to count between the two. It's actually a bit ridiculous! I swear RT's Grace is HoDM's Cassie's doppelganger! The only difference between the two characters was their eye color!! So why am I not pissed that I just paid to read virtually the same story twice? Because this simple story appeals to me on so many levels. You got the small town community where everybody knows everybody. The tight-knit central family that everyone admires and adores. The reluctant heroes and the heroines who love them, flaws and all. Not to mention the ridiculously hot brothers!!! NR added just enough subtle changes to this story to make it it's own so I was able to enjoy it all the same. What can I say? I'm a sucker for a good-ol formulaic NR romance novel. She knows her stuff.
"Rising Tides" is Ethan Quinn's story and the strongest in the Chesapeake Bay series. I have to say though that the whole thing with Seth's biological mother has gotten beyond stupid at this point. There's a lot of things going on that I wonder why the police haven't become involved. We still have the magical realism elements popping up in this book that don't really work with everything else going on. Cameron is now married in this one and he and Anna are only in the last half of the book. Phillip barely feels real in this one and even when he is the subject of his own book still feels fake to me.
Ethan Quinn is quiet and loyal. He loves being on the water and now is turning his hand at helping his brothers with their hand made boating business. That said, this book is pretty hard to read since it deals with child rape. Though Phillip and Cameron's childhood stories are tough to read about, Ethan's definitely affected me. Ethan feels as if what happened to him as a child now makes him unclean and unworthy of love as an adult. When childhood friend Grace Monroe finally makes her feelings for Ethan known, they stumble along to something, though Ethan is reluctant to have things become permanent.
I did like Ethan for most of this book, and then I didn't at times. His talking down to Grace after she is almost assaulted was definitely one of those times. I really got tired of the men in this series and how they supposedly talked to women they cared about. At least he apologized though so that was something. Ethan is probably the brother that gets Seth the most so it was great to see the scenes involving them together. And Ethan telling Seth about his past has Seth opening up even more about things.
Grace was great and I felt for her. A young woman who had dreams of dancing that were taken away by her parents, she married a man she didn't really love who left her when she was about to give birth. She is now raising her 18 month old daughter on her own while working several jobs. I hated how Ethan and even other people acted like Grace was acting too prideful when her father treated her like dirt because she was pregnant before marrying, and is now divorced.
The writing was strong in this one, though the flow was off here and there. I think there were too many things going on with Seth's mother, the insurance company still, rumors about Ray Quinn, etc. When the book just focused on Ethan and Grace and their budding romance it really works.
The ending did make me laugh and sigh at times though. Ethan finally gets told about himself and it finally starts to sink in that what was done to him as a child doesn't have to shape the rest of his life.
This book is boring and annoying. I don't particularly like Ethan or Grace, though I hate Grace even more.
Nothing much happens here. Seth is even more annoying than ever. He punches Ethan in the face twice, and a few more times in the stomach. Actually punches him, with all his might! The stupid little kid! Yeah, he had a sucky few years of childhood, but that doesn't give him the right to punch his guardian! And not even get in trouble for it! I'm sorry, but Ethan should at least have yelled at the brat. Seriously, if I was ten and punched my mother or father in the face (more than once) they'd have freakin' killed me! So stupid.
The way I see it: you shouldn't hit someone that can't hit you back. Since an honorable man in his thirties isn't going to hit a ten-year-old boy, said boy should not hit said man. This goes for a woman, too. A woman shouldn't hit a man, because the man can't hit back (without being considered evil, anyway). Women can hit women, and men can hit men. I don't know, maybe I'm just not a fan of violence.
It pissed me off that Anna butted her unwanted head into Ethan's business. It was unnecessary, seeing as how Grace already screamed at him for about an hour and practically beat him up, so I thought her rampage of insults was uncalled-for. Apparently, Ethan has "big clumsy hands" and a "fat head," and then she says to him "Don't you dare get out of that chair. I swear I'll belt you." BELT YOU! And then she goes in for the sympathy card and goes "Oh, I was raped..." blah blah blah. She's SO ANNOYING! Are you freaking kidding me!? How is that okay? Just because she's a woman? If a guy said "I'll belt you" to a woman, everyone would be pissed. Anna always brings up her rape when someone is sad, just to prove that she's been "just as sad." Apparently, because she was raped, she knows everything about everyone's feelings and lives and is a mind-reader. Yeah, it was a horrible thing that happened to her, but I don't even care, because I hate her guts! What gives her the right to lecture Ethan? Honestly! She calls him stupid about forty times in two pages.
And then, of course, Ethan NEVER gets angry when people spout out thousands of insults his way. And after she gets done pelting him with said insults, he goes all, oh, poor Anna, don't cry, and my wonderful dead mother would have loved you. Really? Why? Because she's an interfering b*tch?
The reason for the three stars is because the characters are distinct and well developed. I find that with NR heroines, they are either A) mean and pissy throughout the whole book, or, B) really nice the whole book, and then, suddenly, at the very end, they become horrible, mean shrews pissed off at everyone for no reason.
So sad to give the second book in the Chesapeake Bay Saga 3 stars after I gave the first book 5, but I didn't love it.
Rising Tides continues the story of the Quinn brothers, though it focuses on Ethan (the second kid Ray and Stella Quinn adopted) and Grace, a single mother who's been in love with him since pretty much... forever (and who Ethan has been in love with since always as well).
The book is actually too focused on them, on their romance. I would've loved that because I'm a sucker for romance but I didn't. Ethan and Grace as a couple neither attracted nor interested me. Whereas reading about Cameron and Anna kept me wanting more, grinning, feeling their chemistry through the pages and I knew they were meant to be together, Ethan and Grace gave me a 'meh' feeling. I felt indifferent towards them. I wouldn't have mind at all if they hadn't ended up together.
Why did I keep reading if they didn't interest me then? I couldn't wait to read about Cam and Anna and the interactions between the Quinn brothers. Both reasons which I would've loved to see more in this book.
The first one I understand its lack of it because the book wasn't supposed to be focused on them, but the latter reason disappointed me a lot. Their brothers' interactions was one of my favorite parts of Sea Swept and I really missed them in this book.
Though Rising Tides left me with a bittersweet taste, I'm definitely going to read the next book in the saga because I can't wait to know more about Phillip (whose story's next), hopefully more about Cam and Anna and know what's going to happen with Seth.
