Short, Sweet, & Cute
"Please tell me you weren't thinking gay thoughts at work in a room full of certified Psychs."
"Gay thoughts?"
"Jacob..."
"Should I have borrowed a straight brain before I showed up at the meeting?"
A short story told from Jacob's POV - tells the story of the first (sort-of) meeting between Jacob & Vic.

Though, the jelly doughnut was really the star of the show...

I'll probably have to come back to this after I get deeper into the series so I can better appreciate the various references to future story lines. Re-reading won't be any hardship; this was a quickie.

UPDATE:
I've officially read the entire PsyCop series (at least the books published to-date. Now that I have a better understanding of the character & relationship progression, I'd recommend reading this book after Book four or five. There's nothing wrong with reading this story at the beginning of your PsyCop adventure, but I feel readers will appreciate all the little things happening in this story more if they come back to it. If you want to start with this book and do a re-read later, I think that would be perfect - That's what I did. It was much more satisfying on the re-read, however.

It was refreshing to see Jacob’s opinion on Vic before they became boyfriends. So we now know that Jacob always has a thing for our bad-boy attitude always scowling and awkward Vic. It was cute and interesting.

This is a fun little prequel to the PsyCop series and one of two stories told from Jacob’s perspective. He and his partner, Carolyn, are going to his first PsyCop meeting. While he’s excited about it, Carolyn is more interested in fixing Jacob up with a new man. As Carolyn is a telepath, Jacob has to be very careful what he says to her.

As much as I enjoyed this story, I think it would be better appreciated by gaining some familiarity with the characters and their world. Vic’s misadventure with a jelly donut is hilarious! Start with and read this free short after.

Vic & Jacob - the prequel. :)

One year, four months, and eight days before Jacob & Vic hooked up at Maurice’s retirement party, they met at a work meeting.

There was jelly donut filling, wet napkins, and clipart involved.

And a precog who knew what was what

I could‘ve done w/o Jacob’s attraction and pending relationship w/ Crash. But, I did so love the first meeting

This was a great PsyCop short. We get Jacob's POV of the first time he lays eyes on Vic, and of course Vic is in his own little world dealing with another of his sportcoat disasters. It was really sweet seeing Vic through Jacob's eyes and him trying to figure out if Vic was gay or straight or "open-minded enough to experiment".

This was a total tease and now I'm drooling for more Vic and Jacob now, now, NOW!!!

ETA: This can be read prior to reading the 1st book, but you might not appreciate this story as much if you haven't the other books in the series 1st.

This was a special surprise! I loved the glimpse into Vic's life before he got together with Jacob and I love anything written from Jacob's POV. It was interesting to see how and when he got together with Crash and his impressions of Vic at first meeting. A great short for PsyCop fans!

Here's a little tip: remind yourself of the character names before reading a short that appears before the start of the series. If you forget a character's last name and the story is about police officers, who go by their last names, you will completely miss the point of the story and have to read it over again.

In this case, it was fine because the story was nice the first time and fun the second. Here we are shown how Jacob and Vic first meet and we see Vic from Jacob's perspective. We see Vic's nerdiness and discomfort with himself, see that these neuroses are such a part of him that he is completely inwardly focused and unaware of a lot of what goes on around him. We see the beginning of Jacob's attraction and how Vic is completely oblivious as usual. I particularly liked how Price presented Jacob's attraction without using words that are only about what someone looks like or that are the kinds of things girls would say, like "adorable" or "cute" or "hot" which wouldn't really fit at all anyway.

The whole scene is really adorable despite the lack of that word appearing in the text, and a delightful look at this couple from a different perspective. It's also a good intro to the series, although understandably it doesn't have the tenderness of the later works simply because they aren't dating yet.

Again, I highly recommend this story as well as the whole series.

In the timeline of the series, this is basically first.

However, having read the first two books in the series, and then reading this, you'll get a lot more out of it.

Yep, it's Jacob's point of view, and we see the beginnings of several storylines.

The sport coat. That's all I'm saying.

I'm on to read the next. :)

An interesting little extra, read after the first book it fills in some of what seemed missing. The clumsiness was endearing and nice to get Jacob's pov on the pays.
How being openly gay did make me wonder when this was written, if the attitude -accepting but advising caution- is a sign of the time or police force.

This fun and sweet short prequel takes place one year, four months and eight days before Vic and Jacob hook up at Maurice Taylor's retirement party. It's the first time Jacob notices Vic and also the first time Jacob sees a picture of Crash.

This story is told from Jacob's point of view. It's a must read for all readers wondering what Jacob sees in Vic... :)

About the first time Jacob notices Vic and also the first time Jacob sees a picture of Crash and wants to meet him. One thing I wanted to know was what images exactly the psychic saw when he was staring at Jacob and Vic and grimacing -I'm thinking it was X-rated. :D

I liked this because it gave us a view into Jacob's head. Throughout the series, my main problem was that Jake just always seemed...too good to be true, or something. He was just so...supportive and stuff, I guess. I think I'd been reading it half-waiting for the other shoe to drop...only it never did and that bothered me and made me question its realism. Eh, but this one...I guess it makes more sense now, in an abstract sort of way? Also, the series is from Vic's POV, so he's probably got a healthy dose of bias in there too, something like that...

OMGosh, this made me laugh so hard the dogs all had to come see what was going on with me. Hilarious. Loved it. I think its best read after rather than before. Not a lot of plot but enjoyed the brief glimpse inside Jacob's head. Probably 4 stars but bumping it up because it had me ROFL. Flat out fun.

I’ve read this series before but I had missed out on the shorts.
It was nice to see Jacobs POV, particular how taken he was with Victor from the get go.
Nice !

This is a freebie available on a blog:

It is very short (11 pages in word format), but fun and sweet. This story is told from Jacob's point of view. It is the first time he meets Vic and the first time he (in a way) encounters Crash. For all of the Psycops readers wondering what the heck Jacob sees in Vic, this is a must read.

After reading so many reviews of books in this series and searching the author's website and wishing the books were on Audible, I feel I'm knowing this series and liking it already. That was before reading any part it.

This itty-bitty short continued a pleasant introduction to Vic and Jake and pretty much let the cat out of the bag that Jake is looking for love and has some thoughts about Vic.

Now I'm off the start Among the Living, and hope it's as good as the build-up promises.

A wonderful short in the PsyCop world, written around the prompt 'The first time Jacob noticed Vic, he was covered in red.'

Engaging, funny and -most of all- adorable: because of the way Jacob perceives Vic.
A must read for all the fans. And it's a freebie too!
