Honestly, if I'm in elementary I will love this book and maybe received a higher star. But since I'm not I'll just give it a neutral score.

The story was kinda okay but it lack a certain depth that could cater to a much mature fantasy enthusiast. But since it's target audience are the younger gen, it's quite a good book. Aside from being short, I like the idea of conjuring a dragon. It's quite new to my reading. Everything else is quite a good layout.

In the end, we choose what our heart desires. Because the journey to what's ahead is the decision that we made today.

Keep safe everyone 😊

(I read the Dutch translation of this book.)

My son and I read this book together. Well after one chapter it ended with me reading it out loud for him while he was listening. But hey, we kinda read it together.

This book starts of with Tomas working side by side with his father in the forgery. They are making swords that can kill dragons. For many years no dragons have been spotted, but king Godric still wants dragon blades. And suddenly Tomas spots a dragon's head in the flames. He gets a little frightened and the face disappears.

The next day the captain picks up the weapons and he wants to test them and he and Tomas start battling. But Tomas instantly feels that there is something wrong and he drops the blade. Malik, a man who traveled with the captain notices it and later returns.
Malik returns and offers Tomas a job for the king. His parents agree, because it is a better life than he currently has. While traveling with Malik, Malik explains that he is able to see dragons and they want to train him to summon his own dragon and learn to fight with it.

And that is where the story kickstarts. He gets trained by Drun to summon his dragon, which is called Ironskin. But he has trouble with summoning the dragon and eventually needs to make an important choice.

I learned that the Dutch translation misses a lot of pages compared to the English version. I think/assume they shortened it.
And that didn't do the story justice. While the overall ingredients are absolutely spot on for a middle grade audience. They execution fell short. There aren't a lot of emotions in the story. And everything happens so quickly. I didn't feel awe and wonder when he first saw his dragon. I didn't feel their bond grow and evolve. He didn't really make friends in the Dutch version. They were just seem to be there.
It truly felt like the first few chapters of the start of a book. It didn't feel complete and had a huge open ending.

I will definitely read this book in English at some point. Just to see if the actually cut the story down or not. So for now I'll give it a neutral score. It was enjoyable, but it lacked any depth whatsoever.

So 3 stars from me!

Tomas and Ironskin is Alastair Chisholm's latest middle grade novel and is a lot of fun. We follow Tomas, a young apprentice blacksmith/forger to his father. One day a stranger invites him to join a mysterious secret society, the Dragonseer Guild, where Tomas can summon his own dragon if he can develop the right skills to do so. Tomas and his dragon, Ironskin must learn to trust each other and work together to help save their home and Tomas' parents from a scary threat.

This book is very short (it took me less than an hour to read!) and I think it would be perfect for a younger middle grade audience. It has the feeling of a bedtime story and was very nostalgic to read.

I really enjoyed the illustrations throughout the book, they added a little extra something to the book and were very cute.

Additionally I really liked the themes of family and friendship and forging your own path in life, and although the story was very short they were in there just enough to make you feel wholesome and cosy by the end.

Overall I don't really have a lot to say about it because it was so short but I think this book would be really enjoyable for young children just starting to get into fantasy and love dragons! However as an adult reader who loves middlegrade I did think it read a little young for me to truly enjoy it (but thats okay because that is the target audience haha!).

This is the Dutch translation of It's not common that a Dutch translation comes before the original book, but in this case it happened. The book tells the story about Tomas, who lives in a world where the dragons are gone centuries ago. He lives in a small village with his parents, in a forge. But then, he sees a shadow in the fire and is shocked, because it's a dragon! Thuis is the start of an adventure where Tomas will be riding dragons and where he be able to summon his dragon with his mind. He'll go to a special dragon school with other children and their dragons. This is the first book in a series, so it felt more like an introduction to what may come. It was a short book with beautiful illustrations. For children, the age of 8, it's the perfect book to start reading and after I've finished it, my son got it to read and be read to. The language is simple and the world building is small, but that's not an issue.

A brilliant book for newly confident readers and an ideal class read for year 3.

Tomàs has a special skill but he has to learn how to use it without losing his family.

A great balance of action, adventure and love. I know this will be a popular series with children and an ideal addition to book shelves.

'Draken? Die bestaan niet in Draconis, toch?'

Verhalen over draken. Ik lees ze niet vaak. Raar eigenlijk.

Wow! This was fantastic read! It's such a short book, only 150 pages, but it manages to pack so much detail, magic and intrigue into its pages. I picked this book up just to see if it would be suitable for my class, but quickly realised this is going to be a series I'm invested in too.

As a teacher of 8 year olds, I'm always on the look out for good books written for the 7 - 9 age group. This is the perfect book for them! It's not too long, the language is interesting but not too challenging and the plot is easy to follow but without what happens next being obvious. I also loved the mystery posed at the end of the book that I look forward to exploring in the sequels.

Would highly recommend this book to readers who enjoyed How to Train Your Dragon and the Dragon Realm series.

Welcome to the land of Draconis. A place where dragons and humans were once friends and together they built the city of Rivven. But that was long ago and after Dragon Storm the dragons disappeared and haven’t been seen since. But all that is about to change for Tomas

Tomas has always been told that dragons do not exist. Despite knowing this, he spends his days making dragonswords with his blacksmith father. When a stranger invites Tomas to join a secret Guild in the city of Rivven, Tomas learns he has a special power…the ability to conjure a dragon, and he’s not the only one. While Tomas nurtures his talent and slowly bonds with Ironskin, danger is looming for his family back home and it falls upon dragonseer and dragon to prevent a terrible disaster

Alastair Chisholm swoops into middle-grade fantasy with a fabulously fiery series of exciting and highly illustrated chapter books for children of seven plus. The first two books in the series, Tomas and Ironskin and Cara and Silverthief, have been released simultaneously. With a very cool premise - who wouldn’t want the ability to conjure their own dragon - readers, along with Tomas, are whisked away from medieval village life and immersed into a fantastical world of dragons and where the impossible is possible. For hiding amongst the narrow alleyways, dark streets and twisty lanes of Rivven is a small and unimpressive door that leads to the secret Dragonseers Guild where children train and are are educated in all things dragons.

Many children love a rollickingly good story featuring mythical creatures and this one comes highly recommended. In an absolute fire-cracker of a read, excitement, action and a brilliant dragon-filled adventure are all delivered in one-hundred-and-fifty pages. With the always relevant themes of family, friendship and forging your own path running throughout - there are somethings that even dragonseers cannot out fly - this is a perfect fantasy story for those children who are not ready for the longer reads of a similar ilk such as How to Train Your Dragon.

Tomas is a great character who pretty much has his whole life planned out; learn the trade from his father and carry on as the village blacksmith making dragonswords. Going from sword-maker to dragonseer is no easy task and as Tomas comes to terms with his new situation he faces difficult decisions, dearly misses his family, battles with accepting his changed life and whether he really wants it and struggles with conjuring up the self-belief to actually do what others have told him he is capable of. No one said being a dragonseer would be easy.

Four more adventures with different dragonseers and their charges are in the offing and if the first book is anything to go by then we are in for an absolute treat, expect a dash of magic, great characters and lots of dragons.

With huge thanks to Allen & Unwin and Nosy Crow for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.

Recommended for 7+.

I was originally planning on buying the entire trilogy for my children, but when I was prereading it before giving it to my 9 year old, I found a couple of messages that I disagree with as they discourage healthy family relationships. These are young children’s books with the targeted audience being from about 6-10 years old. There is no reason the author should be encouraging lying to parents or discouraging the priority of living parents. The children in the book are 10-11 years old and were told that if they don’t make their dragon the center of their universe and more important than their family, they won’t be able to keep their dragon or their position as dragonseer. To me, this is also unbiblical as God calls for the priority of his people to be Him, and then the family. I think it was a missed opportunity that the author didn’t choose a different conflict. He could’ve chosen to just make it a self-discipline issue rather than demonizing homesickness and the love of family. The Bible says to carefully guard your heart, eyes, ears, and tongue. There are better messages out there in other children books to permeate my children’s attitudes in life. I stopped reading 2/3 through and would not recommend.

Thanks to Nosy Crow for this copy.

Really nice series for younger children (y2+) from the author of Adam-2. Read this one and Cara and Silverthief. Both equally good stories, hoping that the girls within this series will mean it is equally read by the boys and girls at school.
Tomas is eleven, he lives at the smithy with his parents. His father is the blacksmith and his mum runs the market. Dad's business is slow, the Dragonswords he makes for the King are good money makers. He asks why they make them there are no dragons, they are long gone. But before the King's representive, Captain Hork arrives he sees a face in the fire. What is it?
Captain Hork has another man with him, Malik - he returns to the Blacksmith's to offer Tomas a job, as an apprentice. But is Malik all he seems? What exactly is he really offering Tomas?
Tomas finds out soon enough....but he finds it difficult to concentrate as he keeps thinking about his parents who he is missing. This causes problems in a way he had never known...
Really good.

This is a shorter dragon book than I've been reading with my 8 year old recently (it seems to be his go-to lately!) and I have to say at the beginning he kept saying it was boring - but he likes instant gratification so I told him to give it a few more pages!

He did begin to enjoy it more when Tomas discovered he was a Dragonseer, and I must admit it did get a bit more exciting at that point - especially discovering how to conjure your very own dragon!

It was a short story so there wasn't a whole lot of depth to it, but it was an overall lovely tale of family, friendship, and forging your own future path rather than the one that is automatically set out for you.

I asked my son at the end how many stars out of five he would give it, knowing his initial thoughts, and he said 5! I would probably say 3 (but then again it's aimed at a much younger audience!) so I've averaged that for the rating 😅

I was feeling really uneasy with the whole 'don't tell your parents' thing and the 'you must choose between them and your dragon'. And I didn't like that there was this big bunch of adults drawing these children away from their parents under false pretences, it felt like some kind of cult. But I was so glad to see that Tomas rejected the pressure to cut himself off from his family and instead chose both his family and being a dragonseer.
What we didn't get was the dragonseer adults admitting they were wrong and apologising to Tomas and his parents, and these lying, manipulative adults are instead rewarded with their trust. I was waiting for these dragonseers to turn out to be bad guys, but I don't think that's what the author was actually going for.
I think this series is probably really wholesome, but I just never like it when children are told by an adult not to tell their parents something.

Thank you to Jonathan Ball Publishers for sending me a review copy of this book.

Dragon Storm follows Tomas, an 11 year old blacksmiths son who discovers that he is a dragonseer. Along with his friends, teachers and his very own dragon, Tomas has to learn how to protect his dragon from those who wish him harm while also saving his home from a deadly threat.

This book was extremely nostalgic. I haven't read a children's book in a very very long time and it reminded me of when I initially started to read and the moment that I knew I loved reading.

Dragon Storm : Tomas and Ironskin is the first book in a thrilling, magical and action - packed new fantasy series. As it is the first book in a series, this book focused more on introducing the world that Alastair Chisholm created than anything else. Nevertheless, it was a really nice children's fantasy to get lost in.

The characters were likeable, the story was well balanced and the world building could clearly be seen. I loved how each dragonseer was assigned a dragon that chose them. That showed how deep of a connection the dragons had to have to their seers in order for the whole ordeal to work. Ironskin was no different. She was a happy, loving and loyal dragon to Tomas. She helped him when he needed it and encouraged him when he felt down.

Första delen i serien Drakstorm.

Thank you to Jonathan Ball Publishers for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book in the Dragon Storm series.

It focuses on Tomas and his introduction to the world of dragons which he thought no longer existed after the Dragon Storm. Tomas has to make tough choices of being a dragonseer or staying with his family, but a new threat to his home makes him rethink his decision.

This is a book about choices, with the moral that sometimes you don’t need to choose between two things you like.

I loved this book and I will be starting the second one immediately! Younger readers would love this series as it reminds me of How To Train Your Dragon.

Wat een superstoer verhaal! Draken! Drakenzieners! Vuur! Avontuur! Nieuwe vrienden!

This was a very magical book about a dragonseer who has to try and keep his dragon in the world of humans because all dragons live in a different world.

My favourite characters were Tomas and Ironskin because Ironskin got her powers and she told Tomas to summon her. I like Tomas because he was finally able to summon his dragon and keep her in the world.

I didn't like Creedy because he was sooooo strict! He told everyone what to do all the time and would shout at someone if they did something wrong!

This book is for people who like fantastical stories.

Tom figured he would be a blacksmith like his father, until he sees a face in the fire and is recruited by a Guild that trains dragonseers to bond with the dragons he once though myth - but despite being quick friends with Ironskin, his bonded, could he ever truly choose this new life over his own family? Chisholm and Deschamps offer young fantasy readers a predictable but enjoyably charming mystery, a likeable cast and decent suspense sure to hook reluctant eyes. Can Tom and Ironskin form a strong enough bond before he must decide what part of his life he'll need to give up?

I'll be honest, I didn't really enjoy this book all that much. I read it to the end, but only because it was so short. An interesting idea, people who can summon dragons with their minds, but the execution was a bit simple, the writing style wasn't for me, and i felt like so little happened in this book, it felt more like what would have been the opening chapters in a longer book, rather than a complete book on it's own.
so i doubt i'll be reading any more of this series.

Launching half a dozen friends into the world of dragon-riding adventures, this first of half a dozen books is clearly scaled back to do the heavy lifting of building the world. But it's still really engaging stuff.
