#1 New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb delivers a potent combination of futuristic suspense, thrills, and passion in these three favorite In Death stories—together in one volume for the first time.
INTERLUDE IN DEATH
Lieutenant Eve Dallas is resigned to the fact that she’s been ordered to give a seminar at a police conference—and that she’ll have to leave Earth to do it. But her dedication to her job only goes so far. And when a legendary commander sets his sights on taking her husband, Roarke down, Eve will do everything in her power to stop him
MIDNIGHT IN DEATH
Eve’s name has made a Christmas list, but it’s not for being naughty or nice. It’s for putting a serial killer behind bars. Now the escaped madman is dogging her steps. With Roarke at her side, Eve must stop the man from exacting his bloody vengeance—or die trying
HAUNTED IN DEATH
At the scene of a murder, Eve uncovers the remains of beautiful singer who went missing eighty-five years earlier. Both victims were shot with the same gun, in a building rumored to be haunted by the singer’s ghost. But Eve focuses her attention on those in the here-and-now who had a bone to pick with the dead
J.D. Robb is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series and the pseudonym for #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts. The futuristic suspense series stars Eve Dallas, a New York City police lieutenant with a dark past. Initially conceived as a trilogy, readers clamored for more of Eve and the mysterious Roarke. Forgotten in Death (St. Martin's Press, September 2021) is the 53rd entry in the series.
This is an enjoyable collection of three novellas from the first two years of Eve’s and Roarke’s rmarriage. (#7.5), (#12.5) and (22.5).
In Interlude in Death, Eve and Roarke go off planet to a Policing conference held in one of Roarke’s luxurious resorts. Eve hates space travel and is anxious about having to present a seminar. On top of that someone is trying to frame Roarke for a murder. Eve, Peabody and Feeney must race the clock to identify the killer before the interplanetary police arrive.
Midnight in Death is my favourite of the three and is set at Christmas. A man Eve believed safely locked in away in a high security jail has escaped and is torturing and killing those involved in putting him away. Eve is on that list, as is her friend Dr Mira so she needs to work fast to catch this killer.
Haunted in Death is a ghost story but Eve doesn’t believe in ghosts and refuses to accept that supernatural happenings are going on. A famous singer killed and hidden in a bricked up building has been haunting the rooms for many years. When her skeleton is found near the body of a dead man who has bought the building Eve must solve the two seemingly unrelated cases.
These were enjoyable stories, especially good for holiday reading. As novellas, they lack the depth of a full length Eve Dallas novel although Midnight in Death managed to pack a lot into a shorter story, but they are fun sidetracks into Eve’s world.
I really love the Eve Dallas and Roarke series. But I seem to always miss out on her novellas. It was a pleasant surprise to see all three packaged in one book.
It was very surprising to me to see how well she could condense a crime/mystery into the smaller format, while also keeping up the romance/passion quality aspect of the series.
3/14/17 4 stars. Midnight in Death. Crazy evil was stopped after three people paid the price. Did I miss something? We never got to see Roarke receive Eve's gift. Unless I totally blacked out, while reading Holiday in Death.
3/21/17 4 stars. Interlude in Death. I didn't peg the killer. I did peg the relation of the killer.
4/30/17 2 stars. Haunted in Death. I didn't really care for this one at all. Ghost from the past. Bleh. Supernatrual bust for me.
#1 is Midnight in Death #7.5 in series. It got 3 stars and is my least favorite.
#2 is Interlude in Death #12.5 in series. It got a solid 5 Stars. I loved it. My favorite of this bundle.
#3 is Haunted in Death #22.5 in series. It got a solid 4 Stars. I very much enjoyed it but would have been great as a full story. This was the shortest story I've read in this series.
12-26-2016: Interlude in Death (12.5) - I had previously read in Out of This World (4 stories, only one of which was JD Robb) which occurs during the first year of Eve and Roarke's marriage. Too short, but it has many of the characters with Peabody, Feeney, Morris, Mira all attending a police seminar where Eve is expected to give a speech. Horrors! I would have loved to have heard it though. A bit disappointing that she didn't get around to giving it, what with murder and mayhem dogging her footsteps. Theme is "sins of the fathers ..." and it has an old fogy who is delightfully behind the times where women in the work force, gun bans, etc. are concerned. Just the man to rile the blood. A legend in the police force, he retires from a successful 50 years as a policeman and fails, like Wellington, at politics. I've often wondered why people who excel at giving orders think they can make it in politics where the art of making the deal rules. Businessmen, possibly. Military and police, just no. At any rate, the book is first rate, but, again, too short.
12-9-2016: Midnight in Death (7.5) occurs during their first Christmas season together. I am trying to re-read all the In Death books in order but I had already finished the 9th one when I realized this one is 7.5. So I stopped and read it quickly for the third time, while trying to figure out where it belongs in the sequence. Fortunately, Holiday in Death made such an impact, it was pretty easy. This one, too, takes place during the Christmas holidays, beginning on Christmas day where Holiday left off. No new characters introduced, the murderer is known from the beginning by both Eve and the reader, and the murders are grizzly, but still it's hard to put down. It is a good, quick read.
1-16-2016: Haunted in Death (22.5) takes place during Roarke and Eve's second year of marriage and after Peabody and McNab start their cohab. The plot is eerie but strangely believable. There are no surprises (odd that I thought there would be) for the first murder, occurring 85 years prior in the 1960's. But that murder is followed by generations of emotional and spiritual mayhem, most sadly for the victim's family. I had trouble with that part of the story, because it doesn't seem fair or right to not only be murdered but to haunt your family to madness. The murderer's family, yes. Your own, no. As usual, the story is too short and you are left wondering what happens to the Gills and to Number 12. I guess something should be left to the reader's imaginations, they should do some of the work after getting all the enjoyment of Ms. Roberts work, but Ms. Roberts has such a fertile imagination herself that I prefer hers to mine.
Three novellas, each featuring Lieutenant Eve Dallas, together in one volume.
These three stories fit into the sequence of the In Death series at different places. “Interlude follows the seventh book, “Holiday in Death, where Eve and Peabody pursued a murderous Santa finding his victims through a dating service. “Midnight follows the twelfth book, “Betrayal in Death, in which Eve tracked down a hit man/murderer. And “Haunted follows the twenty-second book, “Memory in Death, with Trudy Lombard, Eve’s once-upon-a-time foster mother, going from victimizer to victim. Knowing where the stories fall in the sequence of the series helps readers understand the interactions, relationships, and behavior of each of the characters in the different narratives.
“Interlude in Death finds Eve scheduled to give a seminar at an interplanetary law enforcement and security conference being held at Roarke’s palatial off-planet Olympus Resort. But she hadn’t counted on having to keep former Commander Douglas Skinner from setting his sights on bringing down her husband. Will Eve’s legendary devotion to the job keep her from protecting Roarke? And when someone frames her husband for murder, will she, with Peabody's adept assistance, be able to find the culprit?
“Midnight in Death finds Eve forced to set aside her holiday plans when deranged serial killer David Palmer escapes from an off-planet facility, intending to kill everyone who played any part in his incarceration. When he leaves the body of Judge Harold Wainger on the ice rink at Rockefeller Center, Eve finds Palmer’s odious Christmas list of intended victims pinned to the dead man's clothing: the judge, the prosecuting attorney, his public defender, jury foreman Justine Polinsky, Doctor Charlotte Mira, and Eve. When Palmer captures Charlotte, will Eve be able to stop him before her friend is tortured and murdered?
“Haunted in Death finds Eve . . . who doesn’t believe in ghosts . . . facing a ghostly killer. In the rumored-to-be-haunted building where the body of Radcliff C. Hopkins III lies, Eve finds the bones of singer Bobbie Bray who’d disappeared some eighty-five years earlier. Now Eve must find two murderers . . . both of whom shot their victims with the same gun.
Well-known and beloved characters populate each of these stories; the plot twists lead to unexpected reveals; the stories [although short] each reach a satisfying conclusion. They’re compelling, suspenseful, and entertaining. Three “In Death stories in one book? It’s reader heaven.
Usually, I don't do short stories but I like the In Death series so much that I read it and actually like it. These are three short stories (long enough to be treated as novellas) placed in a different parts of the series.
All three stories are quite interesting. I think I like the two first ones a bit more than the last one which have some paranormal twist in it. I generally don't do short stories because they are lacking the development of plot and characters. Fortunately, this is not a case with this book. The characters are well-known so they don't need any father development and the plot has enough twists and a good pace.
I absolutely love J.D.Robb and this series. I can't seem to get enough of them. I came across a book years ago and had to get them all. I'm glad I came across this one as well.
Petites novellas très sympas qui sont complètement dans le moule des tomes réguliers. C'est drôle de revenir sur des affaires passées, quand on sait ce qui arrive après.
Book 14 or 12.5 - Another murder at Roarke's resort, we get another glimpse into the past and see that too much dedication can be a real problem. There may be a connection between Dallas and Roarke's fathers. Readers will need to keep an eye on this. It was my first time reading this one, and I enjoy the insight and quick reads if the shorter novels. I missed McNab. Eve saved Peabody's life, and it would have been fun to hear Eve's speech. This is also the first and only time I saw Eve ready and willing to hand over a case.
Haunted was my favorite out of the three. A little bit of ghost story with the crazy sci-fi murder people. LOL The other two stories were three stars for me.
This has been fun reading the abbreviated stories that have been shortened. Eve and Roarke are great in this type of format. I like it a lot too.
Interlude in Death: Like the review for Interlude in Death and the best of the series, it takes place in the year 2059 and 2060 and features New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas. This case she is being urged by her boss into a situation she hates--public speaking. Further adding to her stress, she's being asked to lead in public, plus travel all of which her very cranky. She barely has time to worry about her speech before she is dragged right into a murder investigation. The off-planet Commissioner that warns assistants is found dead with evidence pointing straight to Roarke. Of course Eve knows Roarke is innocent but proving it is another matter. Especially as another body turns up and again Roarke looks guilty. The investigation proceeds smoothly. If you haven't figured it out by now, I'm smitten with this series, and even though it is much shorter, she still does a very complete short in short order. They are at a Police Convention on another planet, and Eve is one of the speakers. The plot gets tangled and she has a few cases to solve. Good old Roarke owns the hotel/convention center where they are staying that creates some plot variety too!!!
Midnight in Death: This short novella in the IN DEATH series set after Holiday in Death. A serial killer whom Eve had captured 3 years earlier has escaped and is targeting those responsible for his conviction. Another terrific addition to the series with all the usual characters and plenty of sizzling romance. The Novellas are a complete story/novel in a short book, but I miss the completeness of the normal books.
David Palmer was jailed three years earlier for massive murder charges he is a slick son of a gun and slipped out of prison and went to find Eve and he other people that had helped to put him in prison. He killed 4-5 of them and Eve and crew finally work hard to catch him, they finally do. They put their skills to top notch including Roarke and are finally able to get Dave down. Yahoo! It was a pretty good story and I would recommend as a continuance. Read this with the J.D. Robb group. Love this story!!!. Making a short story this entertaining is a gift. And, Nora/J.D. has it. She manages to introduce characters and still put an existing story in it. Putting one of my favorite characters and still put an exciting story in it. Putting one of my favorite characters in jeopardy was terrifying. This book dives into the middle of the action just days after the Christmas attack on Peabody. Eve is facing a serial killer. Great job for a novella. Dr. Mira plays a good part too. Highly Recommend.
Haunted in Death: (FIRST READ) Lt. Eve Dallas investigates the murder of Radcliff Hoskins, the new owner of #12, a building that is said to be haunted. Hoskins recently bought the building in order to renovate it to its former glory. Number 12 was a nightclub in the 1960's, owned by Radcliff's grandfather at that time. Eve doesn't believe in the supernatural and doesn't like the distractions in this case. Talk of ghosts aren't going to stop her from solving this murder. This novella was okay, some have been better. There are touches of humor which add a little bit of fun while listening or reading.
(SECOND READ) A short novella, but nevertheless a classic Eve Dallas murder mystery featuring a man shot in derelict nightclub that is believed to be haunted. The fact that a gun was used is a surprise to Eve since guns are now outlawed in 2060, so gunshot wounds are not something she is used to seeing. The dead man is the grandson of the original owner of the nightclub in the 1970s, who was strongly believed in many to be responsible for the disappearance of his wife, the famous singer Bobbie Bray.
Although Peabody is reluctant to enter the haunted building, Eve of course doesn't believe in ghosts, at least not at the start of the investigation. A fun episode with lots packed in to a tight plot. RECOMMEND!!!
This anthology contain , and , which previously published in another anthology featuring another authors.
Interlude in Death
Eve must go to outer space,Olympus Resort, to give a speech. At there, she met a legendary cop that target Roarke, because of his father's sins. When the cop's bodyguard murdered, Eve must find the killer and clean Roarke's name. We will read the scene when Roarke ride a jet bike. Le swooon....!
Midnight in Death
Might be the best story in this antho. The short amounts of words not make the story feel rushed. J.D.Robb show her class, even the story too short and just 10 chapters, you can feel the ride. Eve must face her old enemy, and that enemy target everyone who made him go to jail. The worst happen when he capture Dr Mira. Eve must race with time to save her.
Haunted in Death
The creepiest story of In Death series! I don't know if the ghost in this story is real or just the culprit's hallucination, but its still make me paranoid to read this one. Eve find a cold case, when a famous actress suddenly disappear, and the room where she lost now was haunted. When someone murdered at that room, Eve found the actress's bones. Guess, she'd killed. But who kill the first victim? Is it that actress's ghost or someone who impostor her?
For In Death fans, this anthology is a must read. Don't worry if you don't like short story. J.D.Robb is capable to make readers still enjoy this =)
This was a collection of 3 short novels starring Detective Eve Dallas. The first began without any backstory and none was ever supplied. Occasionally there was a brief mention of some futuristic aspect but without the backstory these were merely jarring. I had forgotten that the author always includes sexually explicit scenes, so it was shocking to hear them. Not enough character development was another detractor. Also, there was no mystery, as you knew from the beginning who the perp was. The second novelette had a futuristic setting and the perp wasn't much of a surprise. Again, I thought it could have been better developed--or the two linked. The third one was the best of all, since it was an actual mystery. Again, though, it could have been expanded to provide more character development.
I have a pile of books for donation. Books people have given me over the yrs.. some I am interested in, and some not so much. But the JD Robb one I wanted to read before I gave it away. I enjoy reading about Lieutenant Dallas. These are 3 short stories that fill in the gaps between her books. And while I haven't read all of the Dallas books, I have enough there to know some of the stories she references.
They were good. And while I like short stories.. and Robb/Roberts writes a good one, I kinda prefer her longer novels. Altho there were plenty of good bits in these to make me happy enough to keep reading.
I always enjoy Robb's Eve Dallas stories, but reading this one confirmed that short stories are not my favorite way to experience them. It's just not possible to develop the plot details and spend time on the interactions of the characters the way it can be done in the full-length novel. So I'd say each story was fine, but only that.
This book is killing me. It takes every bit of will power to read this. Too predictable, not funny, no attention grabbers. I'm sure that the story line is a good one, but I'm not going to waste my time on it anymore. No wonder my mom couldn't get into it.
As we turn the corner heading toward the 60th In Death novels I decided to go back to all the novellas to either re-read or finally read. Interlude in Death: This is number 12.5 in the series. Eve has only been to Rourke’s off plant Olympus Resort twice. Her honeymoon and now a cop convention. Both times there has been death. We meet the chief of police on Olympus, Darcia Angelo. Commander Skinner, fifty years on the job. He makes it very clear that Rourke is going down as is Eve for consorting with the enemy and basically spitting on the badge. Years ago one of Skinner’s operations went sideways. Several of his men were killed. Skinner’s informant - Rourke’s father, had double crossed him. As life winds down all Skinner can see is taking Rourke down and Eve with him as she has forgotten her duty. Eve’s life will be perfect if is she never has to return to The Olympus Resort again. Eve’s closing words are New York is her idea of a resort.
Midnight in Death: This is number 7.5 in the series. Dallas arrested David Palmer and sent him to a cage for the rest of his life. It is Christmas Day and the judge from the Palmer case has been found brutally tortured with a note from David Palmer who has escaped from prison. In a few days three are dead, all part of the Palmer case. For New Year’s Eve he wants Eve. This story is early in their marriage, Rourke is beginning his civilian consultant role. It’s fun to see that McNab irritates Peabody. Eve shows she has feelings for Dr. Mira as she too is on the list.
Haunted in Death: this is number 22.5 in the series. For me it is ironic how well Nora Roberts writes about the “other word but have a ghost in a JD Robb story and Eve Dallas can’t back herself far enough away. Eve is clear there’s no such thing as ghosts. Approximately eighty years ago Bobby Bray was a singer in the late sixties and seventies. She was living with Hop Hopkins, fellow musician and her agent/manager/lover/drug dealer/father of her child. Today in New York Hop Hopkins grandson is found shot to death with nine bullets in him. Off to the side is a brick wall torn apart and inside is a body with a bullet hole. The body is Bobby Bray. Eve is trying to find justice for both bodies while those around her are positive there is a ghost.
Midnight In Death - Book 7.5 - Eve is pulled into a new case hours after closing the last where Peabody was attacked. Eve knows who it is & just needs to find him. The killer is a serial killer Eve put away before & has escaped from prison. Mira is kidnapped. Eve, Peabody, Feeney, Roarke & McNab track down the murderer just in time for Eve to use her anytime/anywhere free Christmas gift from Roarke. Aww! 🥰
Interlude in Death - Book 12.5 - Eve is at an off-planet police convention at the Olympus Resort which Roarke owns. A former commander asks Eve to help him take Roarke down. She “politely declines. 😂 There are 2 deaths that the very sloppy evidence points to Roarke. The Olympus police chief knows it's not him as it's an obvious framejob. They figure out it's the son of the commander.
Haunted in Death, book 22.5 - Peabody & Eve are investigating the death of a man, Rad, who is killed at a building he owned, that used to be a club. While searching the building they find the skeleton of another person. The skeleton ends up being a long-time-missing woman, Bobbie Bray, killed by the same gun that killed Rad. Eve figures out that it is the granddaughter of Bobbie & Rad’s grandfather, Hop, & she is saying she is Bobbie reincarnated. Spooky!
This is a reprint of 3 In Death Novellas that have been released singly and in multi author books before. However it's very handy if you haven't purchased them In any form yet. The stories are always a bit odd versus the regular books meaning Ghosts, Vampires or Satanists but one thing is always present there's a murder and our Lieutenant must solve it with the help of the ever expanding cast of the series. The great thing about this series is that every book is stand alone and complete within itself but they run in a line to make every character solid and make them matter to the reader so you are invested in their lives. All in all the In Death series is a reread anytime I'm missing family who have passed I can grab a book an snicker at the snark have my heart warm at the love and connection and feel good that by the end the "Bad Guy" has been nabbed and is surely on the way to the Big House! This book contains the first novellas Interlude In Death, Midnight In Death which is a wrap up from Holiday In Death so we "See" Eve and Roarkes' first Christmas day. Haunted In Death.
Interlude - Eve and Roarke are off planet while she's attending a law enforcement conference. There's a murder, of course, and in the process of investigating it Eve goes head-to-head with a former cop with a heroic reputation. It's a good story with lots of good Roarke/Eve/Peabody interaction.
Midnight - It's their first Christmas together and a case from Eve's past comes back to spoil her Christmas Day. It's definitely not a typical Christmas story, though, so be warned. There's a scene of torture that I didn't feel was necessary. In fairness, I've read more graphic descriptions, but still I found this one distasteful. Without that one scene it's quite good, bringing us more of Eve, Roarke, Peabody, McNab and even Mira and Feeney.
Haunted - Eve's case takes her back into a murder that occurred during the 1960's. I didn't care for this one much, for two reasons. First, the suspects were too limited and second, I don't like ghost stories, so the "creepy" stuff didn't impress me. I much prefer the earlier novellas, before she started adding a lot of fantasy elements.
A collection of 3 novellas: Interlude in Death, Midnight in Death, and Haunted in Death. I've read this before, since I have the paper book on my shelf, but decided to get the ebook, too. After reading the latest, Golden in Death, I just had to have some more Eve Dallas, and these three were very satisfying. All the standard format, Dallas and Peabody working a case, usually with some help from Roarke, and of course Feeney and McNab. In Interlude, they are off-planet where Eve has to give a seminar, when a "legendary" commander attacks both Eve and Roark, then ends up dead. In Midnight, an old enemy escapes jail and goes after a list of those who put him there, including Dr. Mira and Dallas, and almost succeeds. In Haunted, a dead body in a supposedly haunted building leads to the discovery of another body from many years before, and it looks like that ghost killed the latest body. But Eve doesn't believe in ghosts. All great stories, as all the In Death books are; and short enough to be quick reads.
Three crimes connected by the detective who solved them
As usual J.D. Robb presents us with the unexpected. She gives us, her readers, with a wonderful team of Eve and Roarke. The imagination that presents 3 such different murders with. The supporting cast of Captain Feeney, Dr. Mira, Eve’s aide Peabody and her protagonist Ian McNab and the others in Police Central. These 3 stories are early in the ‘In Death series, but present us with the range of the series. I love the emotion and caring this series gives the readers. There is something deeply satisfying in the way these ‘unemotional characters care about one another and their jobs. Can’t get enough of the imagination that produces such extremes.
This book is a compilation of 3 novellas from the In Death Series. Interesting in that they are not printed "in order" in this book. In story order, the second novella, "Midnight in Death" comes first. This is an important one to read because they refer to what happens in this novella in a later book. The second novella, story order, or the first one in this book, "Interlude in Death" is a good one to read because it introduces a character that will show up in a later book. The final novella, Haunted in Death, does not have any impact of the series story line so can be skipped or read as desired.
Three "bite size" stories for fans of the -in Death series (which I am). All three enjoyable (although the last one was a bit lame - bringing in the paranormal, which I feel has no place in this series). I'm not a fan of the soft porn scenes that seem to be considered necessary in these stories - but they are easily skimmed through or simply skipped. These are really stand alones with more exposition than you see in the full length books. So if you have a taste for (very) fictional cop procedural / detective kind of books with a touch of sci-fi and a touch of romance novel - this is a good place to jump into this long series and see if you like it.
Eve Dallas solves murders...She stands for those who no longer can. That's what she does. Three novellas are in this bundle, three very different stories. The three fit in between several novels in the series. Interlude in death, in which a retired cop has it in for Roarke; Midnight in death, a Christmas themed set of murders; and Haunted in death, with murders and a ghost?
More typos than normally seen, but definitely Robb at her best. Like the Haunted in death, it's up for the reader to decide.
