Gideon Fisher wants one thing out of life -- to be left alone. This is not the Amish way, but he’s devastated after the death of his wife and son to the point of losing his faith. He buys a farm on the outskirts of the district and pulls away from his community. But when a freak spring snowstorm brings a beautiful Englisher to his farm, what choice does Gideon have but to let her in?
Dallas socialite Avery Ann Hamilton is intrigued by the Amish farmer who pulls her out of the snow and into his austere lifestyle. Poor little rich girl, Avery has just gone through (yet another) bad breakup. Every man she meets only wants her for her father’s money. All she has ever wanted is to be loved for herself. Avery soon discovers the Oklahoma Amish country is the perfect place to hide out and heal her broken heart.
But she finds a peace in those back roads that she’s never felt before. Now her life has purpose and meaning as she connects with God and those around her. And there’s something more as she begins to care for this man who needs both love and forgiveness.
Gideon never wanted to live again much less fall in love, but Avery finds her way into his heart, showing him the beauty of life and God’s greatness. Yet as the feelings between Avery and Gideon grow, can they overcome their dissimilar lifestyles, or will their sheer differences pull them apart?
I'm a wife, mother, and bona fide Southern belle. Published author, expert corn bread maker, and Squirrel Princess.
I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I've retained a little of my Mississippi accent though most people think I'm from Texas. (?) Rob and I have been married for over twenty years and have a son--a mom proclaimed prodigy, of course!
I love homemade tacos, nail polish, and romance novels--not necessarily in that order. I'm a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I'm shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.
I believe that God is love. I guess that's why I adore romances.
I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I'm a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture. I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that's me June Cleaver with a laptop.
I dislike people trying to convince me to read the Twlight series (I'll get to it or I won't, either way I'm good with it), gratuitous violence, and strawberry ice cream. (I know I'm alone on this last one, and again, I'm good with it.)
Favorite movies--(besides HP) French Kiss, Maid of Honor, A Lot Like Love, Just Married, and Sweet Home Alabama. Oh, and Miss Congeniality, Sabrina (both versions) and a 1940's movie called Dear Ruth. If you haven't seen it, you should! A-dorable. Anything with Doris Day and most all of Marilyn's and Audrey's.

Two very different worlds collide when an accident catapults Avery Ann Hamilton into Gideon Fisher's world. Avery has lived her entire life in a world of wealth and high society. After discovering her fiance in the arms of another woman, Avery became lost in a blizzard. Unable to see the road in front of her, she lost control of her car and crashed into a field in Amish country. Gideon has suffered unthinkable loss, the accidental drowning of his wife and young son. Leaving the farm he shared with his beloved family Gideon has sequestered himself from his Amish community, waiting and hoping for death to take him too. The sound of a car horn honking alerted him to the discovery of Avery, unconscious and slumped over her steering wheel. Gideon carefully removed her and her little dog from the wreckage, and brought them to the safety of his farm.
What will the Amish community think when they discover Gideon's young Englische house guest? Gideon is still consumed with grief and guilt, unable to move forward with his life. As Avery recuperates she has numerous questions regarding the Amish and their simple lifestyle, and begins to appreciate the peace and quiet of the farm. Can two very different people find peace and harmony with so many overwhelming differences?
Amy Lillard takes a very different approach in her Amish fiction novel, "Saving Gideon." Her characters are from opposite ends of the spectrum, one extreme to the other. Avery is transformed from a minimal faith life to a yearning for the love of God, and through the German bible, develops a strong faith. These charming characters are lovable and personable, yet stubborn and one is particularly resistant to change. The unlikely blending of an Amish man with a very Englische woman is questionable, but as the story develops, Avery begins to take part in the Amish ways and Gideon tries to ignore what he can, and tolerates what he can't. I loved the story of Avery and Gideon, and highly recommend it! I'm looking forward to the sequel to see what is in store for Gideon's family!
I really loved this book! Gideon a Amish man who had it all. The love of his life Miriam and a son Jamie. Tell the accident when his wife and son both died. Gideon couldn't handle the loss sold out everything and moved into pretty much a shack to die. He lost all hope and even turned on God. There is a wreck at the edge of his property during a snow storm he rescued a young Englischer. The girls name was Avery. She was the daughter of a very wealthy man. Had anything she wanted. Was about to get engaged. But ran from him when she found him with another woman. Decides this will be a good place to stay with the Amish. Gideon lets her stay for as long as she wants. He has fallen for her and her him, but she isn't Amish. Gideon could be shunned. What will he do? Get this book and find out what happens.
"The rain turned slowly into snow. The change happened so gradually that Avery Ann Hampton hardly noticed the slushy drops had built up on the blades of her windshield wipers.
Great. Just great.
As if being in this backwoods part of Oklahoma weren't enough. First the rain...and now she had to deal with snow.
And slick roads.
And...heartbreak.
She should have stayed in Dallas, but no. Instead, she had wanted to surprise her fiance' by showing up in the Sooner State where he was scoping out land for on-location shoots. She would surprise him and tell him that he had won. She'd caved. He begged her to elope to Vegas with him, but she had been holding out for the big wedding: long, white dress; horse-drawn carriage; and doves released at sunset.
She parked next to her Mercedes - loaned to Jack for this trip - sitting off to one side. She stepped up to the unlocked motel room door, pulled it open, and saw...
Enough.
Enough to know that Jack had used her. Enough to know that he had never really loved her, and enough to know that he - like everyone else - had used her for her father's money.
As she continued to drive listening to the turn by turn directions from her GPS, she noticed the weather was getting worse and it was becoming more difficult to see. As she jumped at the sound of the GPS voice, and pulled the wheel to the left, she found herself hydroplaning in the mud and slush and flipping over and over again until she passed out while her car horn blared through the snowy night.
Gideon Fisher bolted upright. He body trembled. Sweat poured off him. He'd had the dream again. How many times in the last eleven months had he had that dream? More than he could count. More than he wanted to count. Even with his eyes open, he saw them still, his family, Jaime and Miriam. Every night he dreamed he could save them. Every night he failed.
As he shuffled into the kitchen and stoked the fire, a far-off wail captured his attention. It sounded like...well, it sounded like a car horn. He shook his head. His nearest Englisch neighbor was a two-mile walk through the pasture. They were good neighbors. They never gave him strange looks or tried to take his picture. And they never blew their car horn at this time of night.
Someone was in trouble. No one made a racket like that in the middle of the night without there being something wrong. He headed off down the road. Probably some irresponsible Englisch teenager with more money than sense. Most likely took the corner too fast for the weather and veered off the road. Gideon shook those thoughts aside as he drew nearer to the car. The clear light from the lantern flashed off the shiny silver paint - and even shinier chrome of a crumpled-up fender. He was no expert on Englisch automobiles, but he could tell this one was very costly and very damaged.
He wasn't sure what he would find, but it surely wasn't this wisp of a woman slumped over the steering wheel, her forehead pressed against the horn. As Gideon gently removed her from the car, and totted her small dog in his bag, he carried them both back to his house before they both froze to death in this weather. He could only hope she wasn't hurt internally, and that by moving her he hadn't sealed her death. He couldn't stand another life on his conscience." (pg 2-7).
In the latest novel from Amy Lillard, Saving Gideon, takes the reader into the lives of Avery Hampton, a wealthy Dallas socialite whose been struggling with finding a man who can truly love her despite her father's wealth, and that of Gideon Fisher, an Oklahoma Amish farmer whose been looking to find a way to restore his faith in people once again and begin to live a life without the loneliness that has been plaguing him. As feelings between the two grow, can they overcome their sheer differences, or will those differences pull them apart.
I received Saving Gideon by Amy Lillard compliments of B & H Publishing Group and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance book tours for my honest review. I simply love it when an author combines some of my favorite genres together to make a perfect blend of something new, in this case, Amish romance and contemporary romance. In fact, I often wondered what might happen if an English woman were to fall in love with an Amish man. How would they work through their differences? Would they be able to find common ground and still keep part of their former lives, or would it require a complete sacrifice on the behalf of one or the other? To find out what happens, you'll have to pick up a copy of Saving Gideon for yourself. I rate this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
I stumbled upon Miss Lillard’s work entirely by accident but boy am I glad I did!
She is a true artist painting a vivid picture with her words, that gives you the feeling that you could just step right in.
It’s a wonderful read.
I feel it is only fair to warn you that your time may be in danger with this book. Once you pick it up, you will not want to put it down.
The story flows so flawlessly, it rushes by your eyes and you will completely lose track of how long you’ve been reading.
The idea of converting to the Amish faith has become something of a phenomenon among readers and writers alike. And it has become increasingly difficult to present a new take on the idea or a story that doesn’t sound like a mirror image of every other one already out there.
But Amy Lillard has succeeded there. Her story is definitely original. Her characters are individual and her voice is intriguing.
She has an exceptional talent for writing a view of the Amish community through the eyes of a pampered Englisher and writing the view of that same Englisher through the eyes of a somewhat surly Amish man.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story about life, loss and love.
Whether you enjoy Amish fiction or just Christian fiction, this story will appeal because there is enough of both worlds within the pages.
I can’t wait to move on to the next book in the series and I hope we have many more series from Amy Lillard to look forward to.
I really enjoyed Saving Gideon. Amy Lillard did a wonderful job developing the characters and making them likable. What I enjoyed most is how Avery was accepted by the other Amish. Some authors portray the Amish as "anti-Englisher" and none of the Amish I am friends with are like that at all. It was a cute story and I look forward to reading Katie's Choice next

“Saving Gideon is a gentle romance of two individuals who need each other but do not know it at first. Both Gideon and Avery have their unique issues of pain and loss and it is difficult to trust and try again when you have been through what they have been through. Ms. Lillard gave us a rare treat to experience how the two of them come to realize their need of each other and start their healing. This book is a wonderful adventure filled with great characters that we have come to love and root for. “Saving Gideon is a beautiful story about never-ending hope and faith in God that He can work out everything. My Take: It was a beautiful story and the way the author described the Amish people and their community, it was head on. The storyline sucked me right in and I was able to connect to it. Gideon and Avery(Annie) were a great couple and connected on so many different levels. I have to say this is one of my favorite Amish books to date! I enjoyed it and hope to read more from this author.

I was able to get a copy of this book from Netgalley for an honest review.
This definitely is a 5 star book and that is just what it is getting from me. This in not your typical Amish fiction book. I am sure once you read this book you will agree with me.
I loved the main characters Gideon Fisher and Avery Ann Hamilton. God's timing leads Avery to the simple life that she needs and to a hurting Amish man who has no reason to go on living. Gideon just wants to be left alone. The spunky Avery isn't about to let that happen.
There is more to this book than just a great entertaining read. The reader sees that God's hand is on both Gideon and Avery. Will Gideon learn to live again? Can he trust and forgive God? Can he forgive himself and learn to have faith again? Will Avery find peace and happiness in this Amish community? Will she discover the love God has for her?
I have found a new author to add to my list. I might add that I am happy that I did. I am looking forward to Amy Lillard's next book, Katie's Choice.
I really enjoyed this story had not read any of the author's books before
I love how Avery (Annie) shown Money is not everything i would say it would have been nice if the story finished better but may be it will continue in future books,
I like to know how Avery's father reacts more also does Gideon & Avery get things right at the end rather than left so you have a maybe also how does Gideon's mother do
All that said i would recommend this book & will get more books by this author
Absolutely love her books. This is her first. I actually read the second one first then thought this one would be anticlimatic...wrong. It was good. I can't wait for her third one. In fact I am going to preorder it right now.

This is a contemporary novel that is Christian based since the story revolved around Gideon Fisher his life, his Amish beliefs and how that molded how he lived his life even though he had fallen away after heart wrenching circumstances.
The writing was remarkable along with the character development. The descriptions of Gideon’s life and those of the other Amish in the community, both family and friends as well as their interactions with the Englischers made me feel as if I was there living without electricity, cars, phones and other comforts that I know. The descriptions of his farm, their clothing and his family’s devotion to God was inspiring along with how neighbor helped neighbor. How the author had Avery, known as Annie to the Amish, find her way to fit amongst them as they lived and also able to turn her back on her glitzy, rich life in Texas while she was in Oklahoma amongst the Amish was remarkable but also believable. It was also heartwarming to see her work to get Gideon to believe again in all the Amish ways and bring him back from the brink of despair.
I am not always a fan of Christian or Inspirational books nor of those about the Amish although I do read them occasionally. This was a book I not only didn’t want to end but also read slowly to be able to savor each word as well as visualize what I was reading. I was hooked from the first page to the last and was glad to see the letter at the end that was a sort of epilogue and gave better closure. There was a presumed happily ever after but I am glad to see the series will continue so I can catch up with Annie and Gideon and his family again. This was such a well written novel. I liked the dictionary at the end of the book and also that several recipes were included from meals that were described. Give Saving Gideon a try, you’ll be glad you did.
Favorite Quote: “…Annie, this is a meal to stick to your ribs. She giggled, and he noticed the start of a line of freckles across the curve of her cheeks. “Annie? she asked. The name had slipped naturally from his lips. To him she seemed much more an “Annie than a sticker label. “Jah. He nodded to back up his decision. “Annie. And her smile grew a little brighter. “I like it.
Wonderful sweet romance. I was pulled in from the first page and it was only with great reluctance that I put it down at night when my eyes got too tired I could no longer see the page. This was my first Amish romance and it won't be my last. Avery is anything but the usual "spoiled rich girl" heroine that I see so much of romances today. And Gideon... oh my. He is my ultimate hero, and his story really touched me. When he finally share his story with Avery, I cried right along with them. When his mother made her announcement...I cried then too. When he let her go at the end...yup, I cried. My heart broke. And I'm not a crier. I got so attached to these wonderful characters. Their first kiss... made my heart go pitter-pat. Sweet and wonderful.
Gosh, I'm gushing. I fell in love with this book and every character in it. I will admit that I tend to read romance more on the spicy side, and at the end of the book, I missed the love scene. The ending was also a bit abrupt. It just kind of ended, and I kind of wanted a bit more. But I also just hated leaving them. You know that feeling when a really good book ends and you almost...mourn the ending of it? That's about how I feel right now. The characters come alive, the romance is sweet. Wonderful read.
Gideon Fisher is an anomaly - an Amish man who has separated himself from his community which is already separated from the world by their lifestyle. When Dallas socialite Avery Hamilton crashes into his life during a freak spring snowstorm, all he wants is to get rid of her and go back to his solitary life. Avery, however, sees the peace in her surroundings and feels the need to soak that in while trying to heal her wounded spirit. When her wounded heart begins to heal his grief-ridden soul, the two form a bond that their differing lifestyles threaten to break.
Can either of them leave the life they know for the love they want?
In Amy Lillard's first book of her Clover Ridge Series, the characters are a mix-matched pair, yet you'll find yourself cheering for them throughout the entire story. Although the title is Saving Gideon, both characters need saving, and Amy puts twists and turns, as well as humor and seriousness in the story, to make a winning combination that the reader will enjoy. Book quote: "Are you sure it'll be alright?" --- "Of course." Lizzie smiled, hope returning a sparkle to her expression. "In fact, I think it'll be brechdich." --- "Is that Amish for disaster?" --- "It's Deutsch for magnificent."
A city girl, caught in the trappings of a material world is stranded in the Amish community of Oklahoma. Gideon is recovering from losing his family and finds her appearance unsettling and refreshing. They both learn a lot from each other.

LOVE this book!!! Saving Gideon is filled with wonderful, spunky, kind, courageous, strong, and lovable characters. Amy has written a story that is simply beautiful. From the depths of guilt and pain to the heights of forgiveness and love, Saving Gideon takes you on a journey that is sweet and satisfying. I really enjoyed the change of events from the livestock to be raised by Gideon to the way Avery takes to the Amish life. There are also two other things I really loved! One is the dictionary in the back. While I have read a lot of Amish books to the point of being able to translate Pen. Dutch enough to not have to use these dictionaries any more; I still love them! They are great when you just aren't sure if a word means what you think it means, and for beginning Amish readers (and very considerate I might add). And secondly I LOVE LOVE LOVE the recipes!!! I have long wanted to try Shoofly Pie and after Saving Gideon I am going to!!! The pace is wonderful, not too slow but not too fast, and the times of faith and humility are lovely. If you are looking for a book that shows the dynamics of the Amish family and community, that teaches you God's ways and knowledge and ours can be something completely different, and that coming back from grief is possible this is the book for you! :) All and all a fabulous Amish read!!! :) I've already started the sequel! ;)
There are many songs that can be wonderfully paired with Saving Gideon. Here are some of the ones I think go: (This one is right out of the book! :))"Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) [From Mermaids]" by The Hollywood Session Group, "Hello (Album Version)" by Lionel Richie, "Worn" by Tenth Avenue North,
and finally, while the songs above have something to do with this book, there is really just one song that I think fully encompasses all of what Saving Gideon is. "God gave me you" by Blake Shelton it is an excellent fit!
I have just recently discovered Amy Lillard's books and I must say I am so intrigued and happy that I found them. I love any Amish storytelling and think these are up there with the best. It is so wonderful to see how the English and the Amish can cohabitate and get along with each other and how so many people are dissatisfied with their way of life and all the material things in it and are just looking for a simple and "plain" life with the joys they bring.
Avery Ann, or Annie (as Gideon refers to her), falls in love with the Oklahoma Amish country and their way of life and doesn’t want to leave! Gideon, who has hidden himself away, and wants nothing to do with anyone, finds himself agreeing to let Annie stay awhile.
And the rest . . . is history.
Can Annie change Gideon’s mind about staying away from the Amish community and the church? Will Gideon push Annie away, as he’s done with everyone else? Will he ever come back?
All of these questions are answered in Saving Gideon just read the book. Even better, pick up copies of the whole series. I believe after this week, you’ll be wanting to read all three wonderful stories in the Clover Ridge series.
Amy Lillard does a superb job writing about the Amish way of life and how an Englischer tries to fit in. I had barely begun to read, when I found myself lost in the story of Annie and Gideon. My heart ached and thrilled as their stories unfolded.
Don’t miss this exciting series, found in the wonderful (fictional) community of Clover Ridge.
Saving Gideon is a sweet story of two lost people finding each other and themselves. I fell in love with gruff Gideon with his heart of gold and secret romantic streak. And Avery, known as Annie to Gideon, touched me with her effort to give meaning to her life. She understands what so many people don't--that material possessions will never make her happy. Amy Lillard's writing is lovely. I had such a clear vision of Avery as a "pixie" seen through Gideon's eyes. The story of how the lives of these two lost souls collide and what they do with this second chance God has given them made me smile and feel hopeful as I read the last page.
From the first page of this book I was immediately drawn in to the story again. Yes, Amy Lillard has wrote such a compelling Christian romance story that I wanted to read it again! It's been awhile since I have read a book, the second time and couldn't put it down! I laughed and cried once more reading this wonderful romance book. I love how Amy Lillard wrote the book dealing with circumstances that are different, but yet you can identify with them. Such a great book, with passages from the Bible, dealing with faith interwoven throughout. It made me remember the hope and the healing that our loving God can give.
