For vampire Aidan Murphy, life has never been so desperate. The vaccine used to treat a global pandemic has rendered human blood deadly to his kind, leaving them on the brink of starvation and civil war.
In tiny Penton, Alabama, Aidan establishes a peaceful community of vampires and unvaccinated human donors. He dares to hope they can survive—until his estranged brother descends upon Penton and begins killing the humans. Determined to save his town, Aidan kidnaps an unsuspecting human doctor—and finds himself falling in love for the first time in nearly four centuries.
Dr. Krystal Harris thought she was coming to Penton for a job interview, but Aidan Murphy has other plans. Infuriated by his high-handed scheme to imprison her in the small town, Krys can't ignore the attraction between them. But is it love? Or does her dangerous, charismatic captor want only to bend her to his will?

I loved the plot, the idea of a vampire pandemic, it was kind of a dystopia but just for the vamps, a post apocalyptic novel. Actually, the only thing I found a bit weird at this read was the "calm" of everything, the vamps are disparate but they don't seem disparate enough. People still haven't found out that they're real, so either they're not crazy enough yet (the pandemic is still new-ish) or the humans are all idiots.
Anyway, that didn't really bother me, so still think this book deserves 4 stars. It was fast-paced, the characters were enjoyable, and it made me damn curious about the next one (can't wait to read about Mirren, I absolutely loved him!).
Krystal Harris is given an amazing opportunity to work in a rural community as a doctor and pay off her student loans. Upon arriving in town for her interview, she has to put her skills to use when one of the town people has been attacked. Aidan, the "mayor" of the town and master vampire has to enthrall Krystal to stay until he can convince her otherwise.
Well, this was certainly a pleasant surprise. I had not heard of this series but was intrigued by the premise and of course, I love vampire books but I wasn't prepared for liking it as much as I did. I would even go so far as to say it's ~ almost ~ but not quite up to the par as some of the heavy hitter series.
The premise is that a vaccine for humans that was used against a pandemic has caused their blood to be poisonous to vampires. There are not too many humans that are unvaccinated and this has lead to vampires starving and fighting over them. I thought this was a great spin on a vampire story and I loved that Aidan just wanted to make a place where humans and vampires could live together in peace.
Krystal was almost a bit too accepting of everything...too accepting of the vampires, too accepting of her attraction of Aidan and too accepting of something that happens at the end. I'm not saying that's a bad thing but I wish she would've fought things a bit more.
Aidan was great...hunky, brooding, Irish vampire that wants to protect everyone, feels guilty about some things in his past and feel unworthy but doesn't want to hurt the human he falls for. What more could you want?
Ahhh...how about a bad guy that just happens to be his brother? I had high hopes for Owen but he is really bad. I enjoyed their brotherly "love" but I felt the drama went back and forth too much and dragged on for too long.
There are a lot of great vampires in the scathe namely Aidan's lieutenants; Mirren, Lucy, Will and Hannah. Mirren's story is next and it should be very angsty. Lucy's story will be a hard one as well but I love that we might have a female vampire lead. Will's story will be complicated. And Hannah...well, she's a whole other story but you'll have to read this to find out.
All in all, a really enjoyable vampire story with a twist and some really good romantic and steamy scenes. Can't wait for the next one!
Favorite quote:
"You shine like the sunlight," he said softly. "Don't ever doubt how beautiful you are."
Since I loved this series so much I decided to read them all again since the 5th one is coming out soon. I do have to admit that Krys did a very real TSTL moment. That dirty bastard Owen had blown up the restaurant she’d been eating with Aidan in and had taken care of the injured for hours then when no one was looking she thought to escape, only to run into Owen and nearly got herself killed, even though she’d been warned about Owen. That was my least favorite part of the book. I just hate when authors give a heroine a TSTL moment. But the rest was good enough that I didn’t hold it against her for too long.
This is a great story about a master vamp that bought a whole town and started bringing other vamps and human familiars in to feed them. A town away from the rest of the world where a new vaccine was poisonous to vampires, and he wanted to do something about it. It’s about Mathias, whose son Will was part of the town of Penton, and Mathias wanted Will back. Mathias sent Aiden’s evil brother to kill Aiden and bring Will back. That didn’t work out to well for Owen.
I really liked Mirren, Will, Mark and Melissa. I can hardly wait to re-read Mirren’s story next.
There was explicit sex in this book and the F-bomb was used 3 times.
As to the narration: Angela Dawe was fantastic!

I’m a big fan of vampire novels, so I read a lot of them. I have to admit that when I read the blurb for Redemption I was pleasantly surprised. The basics of what makes a vampire is unchanged, but Ms. Sandlin has come up with a premise for the backbone of the story that is totally unique and contemporary. I mean the idea that the vaccine for a worldwide pandemic would make human blood poisonous to the vampire population is inspired. It definitely leaves the unvaccinated minority in a precarious position as dinner to the starving. It’s an interesting twist for the vampires to no longer be at the top of the food chain. I never imagined a world where they might actually be an endangered species. What an interesting concept.
I like Aiden’s dream of vampires and humans living together, and it’s the catalyst for everything that happens—what gives the story so much depth, hope and causes so much danger. I really enjoyed the well constructed world building. It made the town of Penton, its people, and the adversary they’re fighting come to life as the vampire world spirals out of control, with trouble coming at Aiden and his people from multiple fronts. That means a complicated plot that kept me guessing at what was going to happen next. Good going, Ms. Sandlin.
Ms. Sandlin did a nice job with the development of the personalities of the main characters, giving us a good look into the personal lives. In some way’s Aiden’s still the farmer he was when he was turned loyal, protective and determined to do the right thing. Yes, he is a little whiny and broody at time, but then no one’s perfect. Krystal is wounded and spends half of the book fighting against what she wants and that puts her into a too-stupid-to-live moment. I admit it. I don’t like them. Kry is a smart woman and I think she could have ended up in the same situation without her looking like a silly characters from a B movie. I wish that moment had been different. She and Aiden have great chemistry and even if they did take a little time to get together it’s understandable—he did kidnap her. Be aware that the sex scenes aren’t as graphic here as in some paranormal romances but they still convey nicely the simmering emotions of them both.
Now for the secondary’s. Several of them are truly fascinating and added a great deal to the overall depth of the plot. There’s Hannah, the child vampire, who has psychic powers, Lucy the emotionally wounded vampire who made bad choices, and Mirren who is known as The Slayer. He’s a fierce fighter and I can’t wait to learn more about him, so the release of Absolution can’t come fast enough. Look for in it October. And Will. I don’t really know enough about him to satisfy my curiosity but I’m hoping he gets a book in the future.
So, if you can’t tell by now, I liked the book. It’s an entertaining read and the series has the potential of only getting better as it continues, since the basics of the world are now firmly in place. Oh, and I think I’ve forgotten to mention the series name. It’s Penton Legacy. Ms. Sandlin is a new author for me and she’s exceeded my expectations. There are a few dangling threads but that’s to be expected with series with a ongoing plotline, so look for some of those to be dealt with in the next book. If you enjoy vampire books, give this one a try.
I made up a word search with some of the words I found scattered throughout the pages of Redemption. Some are names, others are places or even things. If you enjoy puzzles, you might give this one a try. You can find it on my blog at
Quick & Dirty: Thrilling and well-written paranormal romance set in a dark and mysterious world where vampires struggle for blood.
Opening Sentence: Matthias Ludlam watched the smoke drift toward his study ceiling, fumes from burning photo chemicals stinging his eyes.
The Review:
After reading the synopsis to Redemption, I knew I had to read this novel. Vampires on the brink of starvation and a town set up as a safe haven for vampires and their unvaccinated humans, so it was with great eagerness that I read this novel by Susannah Sandlin also known as Suzanne Johnson. Aiden Murphy has set up a nice, quaint town in Alabama as a safe haven for himself, a group of vampires and a group of humans with unvaccinated blood that is safe to drink. The human race suffered from a global pandemic for which the vaccine greatly changed their blood making it no longer safe for vampires to drink. Aiden’s peaceful town has recently been attacked and there is now a job opening for a doctor. Enter Dr. Krystal Harris, an unvaccinated doctor, whom was lured into town for a job interview with the promise of being her own boss and enough money to help pay off her enormous college debt.
Krystal’s doctor skills are put to use as soon as she arrives into town for her interview. Aiden’s brother, Owen, is attacking the town’s residents sending Aiden a message that his little experiment is not working. Unfortunately for Krys, Aiden decides his town needs her help more than he needs her cooperation so he locks her up and mind controls her into staying. Krys’s mind is strong so it doesn’t take her long to figure out what is happening.
Krys and Aiden are instantly attracted to one another but after Aiden messes with Krys mind he is pretty sure that she will hate him after that and naturally Krys does. She wants nothing more than to get away from Aiden and his town. Owen’s attacks are getting worse and as much as Krys would like to rebel and not treat the victim’s she can’t do that. Will Krys and Aiden continue to ignore their feelings? Can Krys get over her terrible past and not let it weigh so heavily on her future?
Krys knows what she wants in life and fights hard to get the future she wants. She is strong and sure of herself. It doesn’t take long for her to figure out what is happening to her and why the people in the town act so strangely around her. Krys is practical and believes in science so it takes a while for her to believe her eyes. Aiden fights his feelings towards Krys from the very beginning. He cannot be distracted from his town. He very much wants it to succeed. Aiden is a loner in his own way and is also trying to get over his own horrible past.
Redemption sets up a whole new world of vampire politics, scheming and vampire/human bonding. In this world where human blood is like acid to the vampires, it is a reality that vampires could become extinct if they don’t figure out a way to survive. Aiden has come up with a reasonable solution but others want nothing more than for him to fail. Redemption is the opening into a war that is only going to get tougher.
Overall, Redemption is a dark and thrilling read. Some people may not like the situation that Krys is put in but I think she reacted reasonably for what she was put through, even as she tries to make up excuses to herself, you can’t help who you fall in love with right? In this world vampires are still in hiding but with the blood situation it is making it difficult for vampires to live and Redemption sets up the beginning with a war that can only get more dangerous and terrible. Redemption is also full of secondary characters that I can’t wait to read more about, especially Mirren and Will, I can’t wait to pick up a copy of Absolution.
Notable Scene:
“I still don’t understand why you stay. I mean, at first, yeah. You owe Aiden and all. And you like him. But this”—she looked around—“it’s not real life. I mean, it’s like hiding out, living in your own little country unplugged from everything outside.
Melissa was silent so long that Krys finally looked up, afraid she’d made her angry. Instead she looked thoughtful.
“Let me ask you a question, Melissa said. “What takes more courage—doing what’s normal and being miserable, or admitting what you need in order to be happy? Here’s the problem. You have feelings for Aiden and don’t want to admit it because he’s a vampire and he kidnapped you and you think you should be scared. Well, guess what? Screw what you should feel. Melissa took a sip of her coffee. “Sorry, Mark says my brain-mouth filter gets turned off sometimes. I’ve been wanting to give Aiden the same lecture about you but haven’t gotten up the nerve.
The Penton Legacy Series:
1. Redemption
2. Absolution (October 9, 2012)
3. Omega (February 5, 2013)
FTC Advisory: Susannah Sandlin graciously provided me with a copy of Redemption. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections, or bribes were exchanged for my review.
After a devastating virus reduced the world's human population and then the vaccine to treat the global pandemic left the blood of most remaining humans poisonous, many vampires now find themselves on the verge of starvation. Competition is fierce for the few humans who didn't have the vaccine and vampires are forced to fight for their food. Master vampire Aidan has created a community for vampires and unvaccinated humans to live together in harmony. The vampires protect the humans who have bonded to them and willingly offer their blood in return for their safety. Aidan and his lieutenants have worked hard to create an environment where humans and vampires alike are all treated like family and they are very careful about who they let join them. Everything they have worked so hard to build is threatened when Aidan's brother Owen arrives. Estranged from Aidan for centuries Owen is still holding a grudge and he is determined to destroy his brother and the community he has created. After the death of the town doctor, and a spate of horrific attacks on the humans under his care Aidan is forced to take drastic action to ensure they have medical care available. Kidnapping human doctor Krys goes against everything he believes in but he has no choice. What he doesn't expect is to fall for his captive but can she ever get past the fact that he kept her there by force?
Redemption was an interesting start to a new series and I'm curious to see where the author takes the story next. I really liked the idea of a world where most humans are no longer a viable source of blood for the vampires. It made a change to see vampires starving because they can't find unvaccinated humans to feed from - vampires are normally at the top of the food chain so this was an interesting twist. Especially when vampires can't feed from bonded humans unless the bond was created by them or another vampire in their scythe. This offers an extra level of protection to anyone who is living in Aidan's community.
I liked Aidan, he is genuinely a good guy (well, good vampire lol) and he cares for both the vampires and humans under his protection. He has created an ideal society that he works hard to maintain and he wants the best for everyone. I would have liked him to have been a bit more alpha than he was - at times he was a bit too down on himself, never really feeling he was worthy of love - but he was quite sweet really. I just tend to expect my vampires to be darker and more growly, bossy alpha males so it was an unusual change.
Krys was a strong woman who had a difficult past with an abusive father that she has spent years trying to put behind her. She was very adamant that she would never allow anyone to have control over her again so I found it a little hard to believe that she fell for Aidan quite so quickly - especially considering he has her locked up as a prisoner most of the time. I expected someone as outspoken as she was to put up more of a fight. When she finally did try to make an escape it was more of an afterthought and I felt she was stupid to obviously put herself in danger when she had passed up much safer opportunities to get away. Her escape attempt felt like more of a plot device to put her in harms way than a genuine attempt to flee.
I did like the chemistry between the main characters though, the sex scenes weren't quite as graphic as they often are in paranormal romance but they were still enjoyable and the couple had a genuine connection even if their relationship felt rushed. I also liked the side characters - both human and vampire - and am interested in getting to know them all better. I'm particularly hoping to find out more about Mirren who seems like the fiercest of the vampire lieutenants and also Hannah who was changed into a vampire when she was just a child and has some interesting abilities. This is a series that definitely has potential and I'll be keeping an eye out for the next instalment.
This is another one of those paranormal romance series that seems to be just that little bit more refined, the characters a tad more sophisticated and mature, and the focus slightly less on sex and action and more on relationships, science, communities and...you know, grown up stuff. AND sex and action! There are plenty of PNR series out there following groups of hulking warrior-types who live together that would appear quite juvenile in comparison. More like a group of Frat Boys (to borrow an American term) than centuries old men born in a more dignified era. That's not to say one is preferable over the other, I've read and enjoyed both, I just thought it worth noting that this falls in the former category rather than the latter. If you've enjoyed series such as and maybe even then you should like this series.
As well as being a Paranormal Romance, it's also got a Post-Apocalyptic thing going on. Something I wish had been detailed a touch more, actually. The setting was very insular—all set it Penton, as the series title would suggest—and the community Aidan Murphy has tried to build there. Yet we're told that the world has suffered a massive loss to its population through a virus. A virus that people are now vaccinated against, which for vampires is a disaster because it makes their blood poisonous to them.
This is the reason behind Aidan's newly-formed community in Penton. A nice place to be for the vamps who live there, but the ones out there starving, unable to find enough unvaccinated humans to survive on, aren't happy about it. They see the Penton vamps, each with their own blood-bonded human, well-fed and happy, and seek to destroy them out of jealousy and fear of Aidan's increasing power. Aidan, on the other hand, couldn't give a flying fig about power or any of their dominance games. He just wants a quiet, peaceful life. To provide for his humans and make sure his vampires are taken care of. That is all. In the search for this, he tries to employ a new doctor for the community after the last one was killed. Enter Dr. Krystal Harris.
Krystal was a pretty good heroine—Level-headed, a touch insecure—but really it was Aidan who stole the show for me. A sweet-natured man who doesn't seem to realise his own appeal. I enjoyed the relationship between the two and thought the background plot was strong even with the setting being so limited. Perhaps we'll see more of the the world and this elusive 'Vampire Council' in the next book, which I will definitely be reading:)
Susannah Sandlin has put her own spin on the allure of the vampire, creating a new mythology which is most intriguing with her "The Penton Legacy" series. Penton, Alabama, a small, off-the-radar town, is the setting for "Redemption". At first, Penton would seem an unlikely choice for a master vampire to set down roots. However, it is perfect for the needs of centuries-old Aidan Murphy, who seeks haven and sustenance in a world where most human blood is now poisonous to vampires. Only humans who did not receive the vaccine for a world-devastating pandemic can now provide blood to feed vampires. Aidan carefully selects providers to sustain his vampire community, and he strives to maintain peace between the living and the undead. The successful coexistence is imperiled by the arrival of Aidan's vengeful brother, Owen, who is bent on destroying Aidan and the world he has so carefully crafted. Doctor Krystal Harris comes to Penton, hopeful of beginning a career and a new life. Krys is unaware that she was deliberately offered an "interview" to become the new town doctor due to her pure, unvaccinated blood. Immediately upon arriving in Penton, she is met by Aidan Murphy, who sequesters her to prevent her from leaving. He uses his power to enthrall her mind, but she does not react in the normal manner, and she soon captivates her captor. Aidan lost his wife and child eons ago in ancient Ireland, and he has never let his heart love again. Krystal suffered for many years from the abuse of her father and the indifference of her mother. Becoming a doctor was a way for Krys to break away and make her own way in the world. Aidan and Krys become caught up in a web of need and codependency, sexual desire, and a burgeoning love. Aidan is not really a hero, he is a complex and brooding character, but who would want to read about a vampire who was not intense? Having said that, it's so much more attractive for that vampire to have one soft spot--his love for a very special woman! I love it when vampires, “immortal undead, can be brought to their knees by innocence. Fatally pure innocence. Love--as the sharpest, strongest stake to the heart. Paranormal romance takes love beyond yearning and turns it into craving. It's really quite amazing how soulful the undead can be, especially when the HEA is not guaranteed. There are two more books to come in this series, "ABSOLUTION", and then "OMEGA".
Redemption captured me from the very first page and never let me go. First off I want to say that the above discription is extremely accurate and I really cannot ad much to it. So I will get right to the point I freakin loved this book. This was a keep-you-up-all-night and can-not-put-down kind of book. I enjoyed the diversity in characters as well as the relationships between each of them. The world building was clear and defined and felt I fully understood the reality that Susannah Sandlin built in Penton, Alabama. The character descriptions are beautifully written:
“He’d pulled his dark hair into a short ponytail except for one wavy strand that had pulled loose and blew against his cheek. The streetlight cast enough illumination for her to see the dark lashes fringing blue eyes that reminded her not so much of summer skies or robin’s eggs but the richness of an arctic sea flowing over darker depths. They appeared to lighten as he studied her with an intensity that almost robbed her lungs of air. he had a strong jaw, full lips, and a slight cleft in his chin. If he was a serial killer, he was at least a pretty one. *swoon*
After such steamy descriptions and serious tones typically Krys internal dialog kicks in to something humorous and light.
“He cleared his throught. “Are you Dr. Harris?
“Krys caught her breath. Good Lord, what was wrong with her? She’d been practically drooling through a half-open window as though he were Adonis personified. he could be Charles Manson’s separated-at-birth, unidentical twin.
The chemistry felt natural and not too in your face and overly mushy. It flowed with the story and the situation and came together nicely in the end.
Also addiction this has been an ongoing topic with me.. why do SO many authors leave this bit of reality out of their stories? I have a theory to this, but that is a topic best left to its own post. Susannah Sandlin created a town where some of the residents are recovered addicts and are trusted and productive members of their town. This was a comfortable and believable fit to this world and I enjoyed the depth that it added.
Overall this was a completely enjoyable read. It had romance, action, and diverse characters and I enjoyed every page!
The story centers around a vampire named Aiden who has established a scythe (like a Hive) of humans and vampires alike who feed and live together peacefully during the vaccine vampire pandemic, but a enemy from the past lands on his doorstep threatening to hurt all those he cares about... And a new Doctor in town pressing all Aiden's buttons he forgot he had.
I enjoyed the book, it was direct and to the point and i loved the twist on the vampire pandemic.... I listened on audio and thought the Narrator was great too.
What i wasn't to keen on and didn't find believable was Krys all that happened after around 70% and felt rushed and wishy washy, which was a shame as i loved the concept.
It’s not a secret that I am a huge fan of paranormal romance and I always get excited when I read a new and great book of this genre. “Redemption the first book in the Penton Legacy series by Susannah Sandlin was AMAZING!! It was exactly what a paranormal romance should be: hot and sexy, with a lot of adventure, great characters and with very interesting plot. A big plus: the very sexy vampire with the Irish accent!
With a hint of a dystopian, this vampire novel tells a story that takes place after a worldwide pandemic which left millions of people dead and many vampires starving. The solution to the pandemic was a vaccine that made human blood pure poison to the vampires. Aidan is a vampire who managed to establish a community with vampires and unvaccinated humans who live peacefully. Now, he is in a need of a doctor and Krys is the best candidate. But the problems are many because there are a lot of vampires who don’t see the benefits of such a community. Also, Aidan’s brother is back, killing humans and vampires in order to destroy Aidan.
Krys, the doctor, is a very nice character. She lived a very hard life and she had an abusive father. Now she only wants to be on her own, find a job to pay for her student loans and belong somewhere. She certainly didn’t expect to work in a vampire community! I liked Krys because she isn’t a quitter. She doesn’t let her past define her and she’s trying always to do the best for her future. At first she was shy and not so sure about herself and her role in the whole situation but soon she became stronger and braver.
Aidan is hot! Did I mention hot? OK, one more time: he is HOT!! Of course, he is more than that but he is a vampire and he is Irish! Do I need more? NO!!! OK, now I have to be more serious and say that he is amazing! He is kind, brave, strong and nothing like other vampires. He is more human in a way. He wants to protect his people and he loves with great passion. He is also determined to do the right thing even if this is something he won’t like personally. And he is hot! OK, I’m stopping right now!
I also really liked the secondary characters: Mirren, Will, Hannah, Mark, Mel, even Lucy although she did some things that I can’t forget. The fact is that the author did an amazing job with the development of the characters and with the world-building!
As you can see I loved the book and I can’t wait for the next one!!!
I really loved this book. It was a great introduction for a great new series. I loved the different world these vampires live it. True Blood fans will for sure love this series. I really liked Aiden, he is swoon worthy for sure. And Dr. Krystal Harris I really liked alot, I was able to connect with her and felt part of this world right along with her.
The writing is top notch, and have no complaints on that at all. Its a great idea that Susannah had for this series, and will enjoy reading the rest of the books.
I rather not spoil anything for you, so will keep this short. You can basically get an idea on the summary what its about, and I just wanted to add that I liked the characters, and was hooked from the start. I loved how we swapped back and forth from Krystal's point of view and Aidens, I like when I get to get into the head of the men. It's a great insight, lol.
Overall, great story, and worth giving it a shot.
5 out of 5 stars.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book along with the 2nd book Absolution for a book tour, for my honest opinions.
I liked the premise of this book, a vaccine has ruined the blood of the humans who have been vaccinated for vampires to ingest. Not all humans have been vaccinated and now these people are prized in the vampire community. Penton is a town where vamps and humans live peacefully, the humans un-vaccinated are taken care of by the vamps in exchange for feeding. Of course this is seen as very desirable by those vamps who are scrounging for pure blood and a war is in the offing.
It is also a love story between a human doctor who has been recruited to assist at the settlement and the head vamp
The perfect balance of humor and horror - fans of HBO's "True Blood" series will love Susannah Sandlin's debut paranormal. I chuckled, I gasped, I sighed, and I couldn't stop turning pages. Loved the small-town Southern setting. The villain is believably nasty and gave me chills. I like how the romance didn't develop too easily; the hero had to be redeemed first. Complex, sophisticated, punchy writing - highly recommended summer read!
Oh how I was looking forward to a good vampire book, and this one started of pretty great, but then the writing style started jumping around, and half way through the book just lost its rhythm,,, I got a bit bored 😑
3.5 stars and a pretty good start to a series. I tend to like series' where each book focuses on a different couple but there is the same underlying backstory all along and so for me this started off as a win lol. Available to read and listen via Kindle Unlimited and the narration was really pretty good. I felt like even though I didn't have any trouble sinking into the scenes of the story, I personally would have liked a little more backstory/explanations of how we got to where we are now. Maybe even a little more details about what is like for humans outside of the supernatural because there were brief moments that I was picturing a dystopian type setting for the world but it never really painted that picture so some extra's to clarify there would put me into the story a bit more so I'm not making assumptions. It was also a little vague about the keeping the "vampire world" secret?
I'm loving the premise: Vampires are real, and apparently due to a virus that began killing humans off at an alarming rate and the subsequent vaccine made by said humans, they are also starving. Vaccinated human blood causes an extreme and deadly reaction in Vampires and what little humans that are vaccinated are in high demand among the supernatural community.
Our MC, vampire Aidan, has decided he doesn't wanted to live as a predator and instead is establishing a vampire/human community with unvaccinated humans in a backwoods Alabama town. Here they can all coexist openly and live in a symbiotic relationship. Aidan with his extensive resources procured by centuries of life provides work and a good quality life for the humans in exchange for food, ie blood. The only problem is that some of the vampires he has recruited in his endeavor have pretty shady connections including himself, and the tribune, ruling vampire council, don't like anyone amassing any sort of power. In an attempt to cut him down a peg or too, one such member of the council sends out a ruthless killer, Aidan's brother to bring their new found hope of a community to ashes. Crystal Harris M.D. has just been offered an unheard of amount of money to become a small town physician in a backwoods Alabama town. On her way to the interview, however, shes immediately thrust into some emergency type situations to save one of the towns members. Now, shes not allowed to leave. The towns "Mayor" is keeping her a hostage of sorts because the town desperately needs here with Aidan's brother on the loose. Now Crystal is becoming way more involved in this small town life than she wants, and learning secrets she couldn't possibly dream to be true. Getting out might be the least of her problems though as growing closer and closer to Aidan may however put her right in the line of fire...
I'm not sure what the next book in the series will be about but I really like the way its set up and I hope that its the "Slayer" Kincade.. I'm crushing on his dark, broodiness with a troubled past lol. Can't wait to see whats next.
I really have mixed feeling about Redemption bk1 of the Penton Legacy series. The Premise of the story is a good one and a bit different but the author doesn't elaborate enough on the sexual relationship or the chemistry between the H/H Aiden Murphy Leader of the Scathe or Vampire Community call Penton and the Heroine Dr. Krystal/Krys Harris. Why did they fall in love? what was the attraction. There sexual relationship was implied but no real details. So I Can't say this was a hot sexy romance!! When the exchange of blood happens. that too was not in any real details. Lucy one of Aiden's Lieutenant side story didn't make much since. Maybe she will come up later in the series, but her side story needed more resolution. She gets cut up by the vampire Owen who happens to be Aidens crazy brother. Owen had been waiting for his death sentence to be carried out when he was released from prison by Matthais Ludlam one of the Vampire Tribunal leaders. Matthais wanted Aiden to be killed and who else to do it but his brother!! Owen likes to crave up other vampires buy cutting words into them. What bothered me the most was he hurt a lot of humans and vampires and killed a lot of them before he got his quick end. Owen did Not suffer enough. He was killed to easily.
What I did like was the world Susannah Sandlin has created. A Worldwide Pandemic has killed millions of humans and reduced the food source for Vampire and the humans that survived have mostly all be vaccinated. The Vaccine in human blood will kill Vampires further reducing there food source. They bond with consenting humans who have not been vaccinated and feed from them. They are called Familiars or Fams. These vampires are real human blood drinking, No food eating, and can't come out in the daytime Vampires and not this new anemic modern version of vampires most authors write about today. I love the old way Vampires were written and Sandlin's vampire fit the bill.
So 3 stars because I have so many mixed feeling. But I will read bk2 Absolution in hopes that the Penton series will improve.
When I grow up, I want to write novels just like this one!
Seriously my lovelies, this paranormal romance is as near to perfect as you can get. The world building is well thought out and conveyed. The plot is well defined and solid. The story is full of suspense and intrigue. It’s wonderfully written and the delivery is flawless with the ‘don’t give everything away too soon tactic. Love that! A slow reveal.
The main characters are full of inner conflict that is put across to us in a way that it’s totally convincing. The secondary characters are developed to an ideal level that I ended the novel invested and very anxious to know whose story is next and what will happen. It’s definitely a page-turner and one that will keep you up late.
Like I said, near perfect. ________________________________________ About the story ________________________________________ The Author Summary does a great job of explaining the background so I won’t spend much time on it. It’s getting harder and harder to find a unique storyworld within the vampire genre. However, Redemption is unique from the others.
In Penton Legacy series, vampires aren’t the all powerful race we see in other novels. There is a serious shortage of safe blood (unvaccinated) to drink and the vampires are suffering. That is the reason this small rural town of Penton was established by the vampire Aidan.
Even though the story takes place away from the typical vampire politics, there’s still an underlying threat that the Vampire Tribunal is a big bad that will be plotting something. Discovery of Aidan’s enclave will undoubtedly lead to the potential for many future novels in the series. ________________________________________ Something I really enjoy in a novel is when an author takes risks with including certain topics. In this novel, the author risks peace and quiet by including a kidnapping of the heroine. (It’s mentioned in the summary so I’m not treading into spoiler territory) This one is tricky. If not handled properly, it can really make or break a novel. How does the heroine react? Will it be believable? How does the hero fare? Does he struggle with his conscience? Is he remorseful? I was dying to see how the author would handle it.
I think Ms. Sandlin took this risk and kicked its ass. I really bought into Aidan’s inner conflict over kidnapping Krystal. He went against everything he believed in but did it anyway for the town’s survival. I also bought into Krys reaction to it and found it believable. I really felt the inner conflict of both characters.
I can’t say any more about how it plays out but I thought I would give the author kudos for taking the risk where most would avoid it at all costs. ________________________________________ About the Characters ________________________________________ Aidan, the hero of the story, is all kinds of awesome. From his Irish background, that ponytail and his not giving a shit about appearances mindset to his sincere devotion to his people, I was in lust the entire novel. Krystal, the heroine of the story, had a very hard upbringing and despite it, she overcame her issues, became a doctor and is a very caring person. I loved her from the start. The chemistry between them was impassioned and the mutual respect for each other heartfelt.
The inner circle of vampires running the enclave is Mirren, Lucy, Will and Hannah. They all had an important role to play in this novel and we get to hear a little about each of their stories. But just enough to whet our appetite for what’s to come in the series.
We also learn a little about the human familiars (their blood donors). Actually, this is another area where the author takes a bit of a risk. A majority of the donors were addicts and Aidan helped them to recover and then decide whether they wanted to join the enclave or not. There’s not a whole lot of background but enough to help us understand why the humans are willing to move there and be familiars. Not a lot of authors would include the unspeakable topic of drug addiction. ________________________________________ Bottom Line ________________________________________ Honestly, in my opinion, Redemption is as close to a perfect novel as you can get! Truly an example of what a novel should be. The story kept me entertained, made me lose sleep (a very good thing in my view) and even held surprises in a saturated vampire genre. Compelling characters and lots of danger surrounding the town of Penton kept me engaged from beginning to end. I highly recommend it!
And right now, I’m off to read the next in the series, , which was just released this week.
4.5 rating I love sexy, tough, complex and noble vampires and Redemption satisfied my craving. I was immediately drawn into the world Sandlin created. I consumed this in a few hours and cannot wait for the next installment. Intense characters, fantastic world building and a unique plot make this the perfect start to a promising new series.
In the tiny town of Penton all is not as it seems. After a vaccine renders human blood fatal to vampires, Aidan Murphy has built a small tight knit community in rural Alabama. Here vampires and unvaccinated humans live side by side. If successful his community may be the answer for his race. After the loss of their doctor he searches and finds Dr. Krystal Harris. When things go wrong the night of her interview, Aidan is forced to hold Krystal hostage. The tale that unfolds is riveting and perfectly paced as Aidan works to save his town from a threat and deal with the beautiful and captivating doctor.
The characters were well developed and I connected with each of them. I found Aiden to be complex and a totally smexy vampire. He is a born leader, and protector. He carries the burden of this town and its people on his shoulders. He cares about his community and makes it a point to know both the humans and vampires. To him they are his family and bonded to him by blood. Aiden has a painful history and has closed himself off. When he enters a room his presence consumes the room and others look to him for guidence. Beneath this exterior is a passionate, sensitive man and I loved discovering the many sides of him. Dr. Krystal is smart, compassionate and flawed. She is also curious and her need to know, geeky side, lands her in trouble. Watching the two of them interact was funny, sweet and smoking hot. The relationship grew slowly and I liked that. Members of the community added to the tale and had substance. Hannah was one of my favorites. She is a vampire with physic abilities and her back story was interesting. Of course there are evil characters and unknown players who add to the suspense.
The world building is solid and I liked Sandlin’s twist. While she has not changed much about vampires, the back story and vaccination twist were believable and refreshingly original. The utopia Aidan is trying to create was interesting and the perfect setting for endless plot lines. I love small town series, where you get to know everyone and Penton appealed to me. The plot, character development and flow was wonderful. I quickly became invested in the characters and the tales outcome. Sandlin has a gift for weaving a suspenseful plot with fleshed out characters. This appears to be a series where each can be read as a standalone and focuses on one couple.
Redemption is a must read for fans of suspenseful paranormal romances, and vampires. Fans of the Sweetblood and Night Huntress series will eat this up. The next two books in the series are due out later this year and this reader cannot wait. The titles are Absolution which releases October 9 and Omega due out December 18.
I want to thank the author for providing this ARC in exchange for my unbiased review. *Sandlin is a pen name for Suzanne Johnson author of the urban fantasy Royal Street, which rocked my face off.
*This review contains swear words. Don't like, don't read it. End of.*
Penton, Alabama is in need of a Doctor. But not just any doctor will do. A vaccination that has been given to a large percent of the human population makes their blood lethal to vampires. This means a shortage of food, as well as patience. Aiden Murphy has set up a small little haven, the town of Penton, which is only made up of bonded vampires and unvaccinated humans. Only, his brother has revenge and death on the mind, and Aiden fears that his little village is in danger. So he comes up with a scheme to force the human Dr. Krystal Harris to stay and help with the cause. Aiden reacts to her in a way he never imagined possible, and the romance sets underway as the town of Penton is starting to crumble.

This book just wasn't my cup of tea.
I rather enjoyed the concept of the safe haven for vampires and donors, but the virus/vaccination thing seems to be a new trend with vampire books these days. To be quite honest, this book might have just been at the wrong place in my reading queue at the wrong time. I am vampired out.
Aiden Murphy is a charmingly handsome character, but he makes choices that I'm not okay with, such as "enthralling" Krystal multiple times, and touching her while she was in her daze.
The romance didn't really work for me. The first time they touch it's only half consensual, and it's awkward to read. It was just pretty boring, in my opinion.
What really bothered me the most was the language. The language makes it unclear as to the intended audience for this novel (a problem that I'm finding not all that uncommon. PC Cast, I'm talking to you!). There is an abundance of the word "freakin'" that implies a younger maturity level, since grown ups say fuck. Yet, as adult scenes occur, words like "cock" are used. I'm an adult. I have no issue with vulgar language. But either match the adult theme of the book and say "fucking" or don't use the word at all. "I have no idea" conveys the same idea as "I have no freakin' idea."
Overall, I'd call this book mediocre. I wouldn't rush out and buy it, but if it came into my possession, I'd give it a read. Vampire fans might like it in particular.
Thanks to the author Susannah Sandlin & Book Sniffers Anonymous blog for the autographed copy.
i like this book as it reminded me of Dianne Duvall's Immortal Guardian series. Similar style. Definitely a series I will continue next month.
Food Supplies for Vampires are quickly drying up thanks to a new vaccine for vampirism which renders the human blood poisonous for vampires. Master Vampire named Aiden Murphy and a few vampires moved to Penton, Alabama to establish a peaceful community with vampires and their human familiars (bonded humans called their family or "Fam") who have not had the vaccines.
So with the population of unvaccinated humans dwindled, vampires were starving all over the world and the vampire ruling Tribunal were running out of ideas for a new food supply. Thus Aiden’s community gained the attention of other vampires who envied them and in addition to being worried about a possible rise to power as the only well-fed community. Aiden invites a young doctor named Krystal Harris to come interview to be his community's personal doctor and Krys becomes the object of Aidan's attention. However, his forced detention of Krys broke vampire laws giving the tribunal an opening to target Aiden’s scathe.
I found this book a solid start to the series. I admit the book was kind of predictable and simple in plot, but that is exactly why I loved it. Sometimes stories get bogged down with twists and turns, but this one was just pretty straight forward, thus the story and the writing stood front and center. I actually liked Aiden’s lieutenants more than I liked him because he was kind of one dimensional in the beginning. I will admit that I didn’t quite understand why Aiden’s brother was as sadistic as he was, but when juxtaposed with Aiden’s character, I could see that Aiden must have been a mirror that Owen hated looking into. But I think Matthias Ludlam is going to be a force to be reckoned with and Aiden will have his hands full protecting his community. Great writing style and great imagery.I look forward to the development of this upcoming war between the Penton residents and the Tribunal.
Oh my! This was really beyond wonderful. I'm not sure what I expected when I first read the Prologue, but then bam the first chapter really grabbed me, and I was basically hooked for the rest of the story. The concept; the thought of there being a worldwide pandemic, where some humans took a vaccination that left their blood dangerous to vampires was intriguing to me. The setting, Penton, Alabama, was interesting to visualize, as it's described to be a small town filled with humans and a scathe of vampires. The writing was phenomenal; the scenes/dialogue flowed so well. The characters, now...I would love to see these vampires on screen, and to hear the slight Irish accents. Yup, these vampires were originally from Ireland, and they were just developed really well, and all I can say is, I can't wait to see these characters on screen, especially Aidan (sigh). Anyways (cough) so if you can already see from my side, the characters were believable, including human Dr. Krystal Harris. You can see from the first couple of chapters this draw that she and Aidan have for one another. Krystal, seemed a relatable character to me, and I felt for her, for her unfortunate past, her unfortunate abuse she had to endure from her parents, her Father. She is one that may seem reserved, but she is feisty and a determined person, even though she finds herself in a situation that she though she left when she was eighteen, but I think you'll like her very much, as she brings out strength. This story has so much good qualities including suspense, of course vampires, romance, action, a possible war between Aidan and his enemy, his older brother (Owen) and more, so I really Recommend this story: this first book in a series, as you will not be disappointed. It was...Fantastic! :)
As before, I must admit that I know Suzanne Johnson, AKA Susannah Sandlin. We're from the same small town in Alabama and went to the same school. My review is unbiased (I hope), but since I aspire to be a writer, Suzanne is my heroine.
Could vampires live among us? That's the very simplified idea behind Redemption. Suzanne took an overused concept and developed a twist that made Redemption stand out. Other reviews have detailed the plot line so I'll skip that. Instead I'll focus on my response to the book. First, I liked it much more than Royal Street. The writing was crisper and the pace was just right. Again, I'm willing to place more blame on editing than writing for Royal Street not capitvating me. I loved the descriptions of Aiden and would willingly be his captive (at least for a little while). I was less enthralled with Krystal. Although I understand her background shaded her choices, I felt she was just a little too predictable. Some of the other characters, especially Mirren and Hannah, seemed infinitely more interesting than Krys and I'd love to see them featured prominently in future Penton novels.
For those of you who may have read Royal Street first, please be aware that this book is more R-rated. Vampires are sexy beasts and Suzanne writes the sex scenes well: not too detailed, so it's not porn, but you'll probably have a physicial response to the writing. Nothing wrong with that; just understand it going in if you are sensitive to such scenes or if you are more geared to YA books.
Bottom line: I really liked it and yes, I'll be buying the next book in the series, Absolution. Nice work, Suzanne!
What a fun read! I took a chance and just randomly selected this book during an audible sale. I'd seen people mention it randomly but not regularly. What an interesting premise!
A human epidemic who's cure leads to a vampire pandemic. And we are left with Penton, AL - a secret colony of un-vaccinated humans who vampires can still feed off of.
Chris is our heroine who is a newly minted doctor. She travels to Penton for a job interview unbeknownst to her that it is an INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE...hospital administrator...our hero, Aidan.
Aidan is your typical do gooder, blood sucker, changing the way we live, it's my job to make it happen type of guy. He's a decent guy. He's Irish which is hot. He's also up against a vamp society that views humans strictly as a food source, a diminished source, but food none the less.
Aidan and Chris are tested by Aidan's fool ass brother who has it out for him with the backing of some pretty powerful folks.
Overall great story, interesting premise, and I'm excited to continue this series with Mirren's story.
I had this recommended to me several times, and just kept draggin' my feet. No clue why... it just ended up that way. Boy, oh boy, it was much more fun than I anticipated! I will definitely continue the series to see what happens... I'm curious if book #2 focuses on the same couple or moves on to another or what.
Audio book narrator was OK. Not bad, but at the same time when there are characters just 3 months out from Ireland... the Irish brogue was severly lacking. Even the character that you mostly don't hear the Irish except when fired up in one way or another... still lacking as well. But overall, it didn't really hurt the book, just wasn't all that I hoped.
The vampire 'origin mythology' isn't really explored at all, but I do like the interesting mix-mash of ideas with an interesting pandemic twist. It was different enough to make it unique and not just 'another vampire book'. I'd recommend to readers that enjoy PNR.
I was surprised by this book, it's actually quite good! Anyone who likes vampire PNR will like this book! I already bought the second book in the series and am looking forward to reading it!
REDEMPTION was a truly enjoyable read/listen. There were things about the PNR that paralleled other vampire books but there were also things that separated it from the herd.
The town of Penton was an ingenious idea of it's founder. Though it may seem merely a social experiment the fact is that towns like it can save the vampire race in the world that Susannah Sandlin has created. A world with it's own unique view on the vampire theme.
With the town of Penton came a whole cast of characters. Aiden was fiercely dedicated to his town and people. What he set up was beneficial to all who lived there. Weirdly enough the town had a BDSM vibe to it. Ok so not in a sex way but in the principle way. The freedom from making major decisions way and trusting someone to take care of you. There was a conversation between Krys and one of the women who feeds a vampire where Krys asked why she did it and the woman's response could have easily come straight from a BDSM read where the lifestyle is being discussed. But I digress. Krys was a good character too. I liked how she dealt with everything that was thrown at her. As far as the many secondary characters go I think I'm most interested in Mirren. Thank goodness his book is next!
Sandlin is a "new to me" author and although REDEMPTION is the first book of hers that I've read/listened to it most certainly won't be the last. In fact I already have the next book in the series loaded on my kindle.
About The Narrator... I liked her though she was a little on the slow side. She was able to pull me into the story easily.
DnF at 50% not feeling the chemistry enough to overlook the Stockholm situation. It would be more believable if the FMC, smart doctor who escaped abusive father, tried to jump the MMC bones once he proved he could be trusted and she wasn't under his control, and not before her release. She doesn't have enough data or interaction with anyone else in this society to be able to make a realistic judgement call about her captors trustworthiness. Total eye rolling moments. He is hot, so must have him. Ignore all red flags and do no investigation into his character. Urgh vomit.
I love a good vampire book and this had a whole new take on them since humans (some of them) are actually toxic to the vampires. But while that twist could have been really interesting, they didn't play on it that much and frankly this book was a little dull. I liked the main two characters and a few of the side characters so that kept me reading, but the plot the was predictable and even hot vampire sex couldn't really save that.
