This Church Educational System manual includes interpretive commentary, enrichment sections, historical and cultural insights, maps, and charts relating to the Old Testament. Does not include commentary on the book of Psalms. For institute course Religion 302. Also useful for individual and family study.
This is a really nice and well-organized student manual prepared by the Church Educational System and published by the LDS Church. The book starts out with colored maps (Old Testament Canaan, the Old Testament World, the Empire of David and Solomon, Kingdoms of Israel, Judah, and the Mediterranean), flow charts of chronology, coinage comparisons, standard volumes/measurements/weights, and the Jewish calendar.
This volume gives aid to understanding the Old Testament. Each chapter is a segment that includes an introduction, notes and commentary, and points to ponder.
The book is obviously written from an LDS stance because many reference and back-up evidence come from the Church. These sources include the Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, Lectures of Faith, etc. They also reference LDS figures like Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, James E. Talmage, Ezra Taft Benson, and Bruce R. McConkie to name a few.
I would recommend this book to aid anyone wanting to gain more understanding of the Old Testament. Thanks!
This manual takes the student through the OT in chronological order, which really helped me. It also helped to have things explained & I loved the cross-references. I studied it on-line & so all I had to do was click on the link & it would jump to the scripture referenced or the place in another manual instead of looking for it in an actual book. I always had 3-4 windows open at a time - my scripture journal, the scriptures, the OTSM & another window when I needed to jump to another manual or book of scripture. If I had to go back to manually studying this on a table or desk, it would not happen.
This will basically be the same review as for the Part 1 Student Manual - it is fine for what it is. It gives some good background and context, but it also points out some super obvious things that are annoying. The difference is that this one jumps around through the OT because it goes Chronologically while the OT does not, but I was reading the OT straight through.
All in all, I'm glad I had it as a companion read!
2nd read: same review as before, it's a great companion read for the Old Testament, especially with it's notes on historical context.
After nigh of 5 years, I have finished the Old Testament, and I'm ever grateful to have these precious writings from prophets of old. The prophecies of Jesus Christ and His Atonement are richly foretold in this book, and when studied along with the New Testament and the Book of Mormon, the meanings are even more rich.
I was actually able to walk away with a greater appreciation of Jonah, a greater fondness of Daniel, Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego. My understanding of Esther's story being placed, and her similitude of Christ.
I can say that now that I have a deeper understanding of the events in the Book of Mormon as well, and the necessities why they also kept close the prophetic writings of Moses and Isaiah.
In order to truly understand the Old Testament, I found this student manual to be an invaluable resource. I have loved studying the Old Testament. At first, I felt so daunted to read the Old Testament from cover to cover and understand what I was reading. It is such a beautiful work of scripture about God's dealings with his children. I am going to miss the daily reading from these pages, but I am looking forward to reading the New Testament next in detail.
I highly recommend this manual as a companion piece when studying the Old Testament.
This book gives amazing spiritual and academic insights into the Old Testament. The organization is fantastic, in that it leads you through each book of the Old Testament in chronological order. Highly recommended.
This manual is essential to use alongside the reading of the Old Testament. Really makes things understandable and gives you the perspective of how things were in the times of the writing of the Old Testament. Loved it...
This study companion is a must-have for those attempting the Old Testament. It helps you work through it chronologically and offers great information on historical context as well as modern-day perspective in light of continuing revelation.
I promised one of my religion teachers at BYU I would do all of my reading. I am still working on it. I know I am terrible. But I am going to keep my word, if it is the last thing I do.
Took me and my older children 5 years to study the Old Testament with these study guides. What a growth of my testimony of the savior!! I highly recommend it.
Outstanding! Makes difficult material easier to understand and draw meaning from sacred text. CES manuals are cheaper and make great additions to scripture study.
