Storm Boys #2

Into the Tempest

Rate this book
Jeremiah Overton is now in charge of Darwin’s Bureau of Meteorology, and his storm chaser boyfriend, Tully Larson, couldn’t be happier. For Tully, it means watching summer storms with the love of his life but for Jeremiah, it means relearning everything on equipment that’s older than he is.

But summer storms also mean it’s cyclone season. While Tully’s no stranger to tropical storms and the occasional cyclone, for Jeremiah, it’s a first.

As Tropical Cyclone Hazer bears down on the city, Jeremiah and Tully prepare to stay behind. Jeremiah knows what to expect, theoretically, but living through it is a different story.

If they live through it at all.

This book is better than the first, with more character and relationship development (but still not much steam).

Tully and Jeremiah may have known each other for only a few short weeks, but their connection is strong, and Tully's family welcomes Jeremiah with open arms.

The men survive a category 5 tropical cyclone together. The description of the stillness when the eye of the storm hits gave me chills.

Once I got to the halfway mark, I was riveted and couldn't put this book down.

I also enjoyed the various secondary characters, including Doreen, her partner Suri, and Tully's supportive parents. The bickering between Tully and his brother Ellis was too much at times though.

The book ends with a strong HFN, but now that the weather station is destroyed, the future of Jeremiah's career in Darwin is uncertain.

We don't have long to wait for book 3.

“Sorry. It’s what boyfriends do.

anigif-l

The storm boys return in Into the Tempest and I'm surprised that even though it's a very quick-read (it took me less than an hour!), it was such a wonderful continuation of Tully and Jeremiah's relationship. 🫶🏻

“And maybe I am crazy. I know it sounds like it because we’ve known each other for just a few weeks, but, Jeremiah, he tapped my chest, “you’re my kind of crazy.

Tully is the picture perfect definition of a boyfriend - devoted, loyal, reassuring, shamelessly in love with his nerdy boyfriend, fiercely protective of his feelings and a comforting shoulder to lean on always and forever. 🩷 I enjoyed reading how in awe he was of Jeremiah's capabilities, even if he sometimes tempted fate too much with his acts of bravado. 😅

“It’s all new to me too. But if you feel this— I took his hand and placed it over my heart. “—then I feel the same as you.

Jeremiah really shined this time around - very much in his element, firmly devoted to his profession, very much determined to do his job right - very much intent on warning as many as he could, fearful for those he could not. My heart hurt at how much of his life he still cannot avoid while doing the job he loves - how much so that he'll always be recognized for either his traumatic past or his beautiful blue eyes. But, I loved that as the storm waged, his confidence grew, his brave recklessness shined, and his commitment to his job won hearts all over - including, Tully's - always, Tully's. 😊

“He kissed me like maybe he loved me.

Most of all, I love those intimate moments when the realization swept over them - even before, disaster struck - that what they felt for each other was something more. These feelings are so very new, but that doesn't make it any less real. 🤍🤍 So, what makes this series so enjoyable, is that we get to see their relationship grow in steady breaks - that they have become a part of each other's lives, without ever saying it openly. And when it finally hits them - it's impossible to deny what they share. 🥰

“He just told them we were cohabitating. Not even that I was staying at his house, but rather that I was staying with him.

As in, not leaving. Not returning to Melbourne. I was with him.

It was also nice to meet Tully's parents and his older brothers - Ellis, especially; menace he may be, he's still a very fun-loving brother to have around and I look forward to seeing more of him. 😄 I loved how welcoming they were to Jeremiah, appreciating and acknowledging that Tully had never cared for anyone the way he was for him. 💟💟 Their affection and care for him was so very sweet to see, considering his own rocky relationship with his father.

“But Mother Nature was an unpredictable beast.
There were always likelihoods and probables.

The storm - the storm is a character on it's own, because when the hurricane hits - it hits hard. I'm always very much impressed when author's capture action scenes so vividly that I can envision it in my head. So I really appreciate how N.R. Walker described the eye of the storm - the belly of the beast - the eerie silence and the violent noise of it's carnage. 🌩️🌩️ That little tingle that runs up my spine when the level of fear intensifies is something that I always look to when I know the words are hitting just right - waiting in baited breath as the wind raged it's destruction outside.

Can't wait to see what tempest the storm boys will face in this series conclusion! ⛈️

This is the third book in the series, the second featuring Tully & Jeremiah. Again a relatively short book (just under 200 pages), and we get to see them connect more & build on their relationship while already living together. Moving in with each other after only a week, even with the circumstances of Jeremiah’s unexpected job DOES stretch believability a bit, but I did like them as a couple as the book went on. Jeremiah opens up more about his past & his family, we empathise with him more, and we love how sweet Tully is with him.

A bit more drama & angst in this one, as a cyclone hits their hometown, and Jeremiah’s crazy impulsiveness nearly ends in disaster but instead results in him being a hero. Both Tully & Jeremiah, despite never having loved before, realise after fearing for their lives that they need to never leave things unsaid. Cue happy ending.

Absolutely loved this.

The tension with the cyclone was so good, I couldn't stop reading until I finished at 2am.

I just love how cute and all in Tully is and Jeremiah's awkwardness mixed with his angry lion side is perfect for me. They go together so well.

Also love how Tully talks to his brother, one of the most genuine sibling relationships I've ever read - it's exactly how me and my siblings talk to each other 😂 if we're not insulting you we don't like you!!

Kind of sad there's only one more book!

Another action-packed weather apocalypse romance

I'm still not sure that these books needed to be split up but this was another excellent addition to this series.

I know zilch about weather forecasting or weather types but I have to say, I was enthralled reading about the impending cyclone heading towards Darwin.

Tully and Jeremiah are just settling into their new role as boyfriends when the warning comes, so there's lots of relationship stuff going on as well as the action and it married well.

I love the cast of supporting characters too, especially Jeremiah's work colleague Doreen and Tully's family.

I'm interested to see how things wrap up in the last one.

Ok so yes I will admit this one is better than the previous one, mostly because Tully lowers his creepiness to an adequate level. So I'll give it 4 stars for now but I might lower my rating later, I've definitely enjoyed other NR Walker books more.

But I do have to say that there is no actual plot in this book, like seriously, nothing plot-wise happens. What is even going to happen or not happen I guess in the third book?

This book centers around a cyclone and that is very dramatic on its own because yes they are natural disasters but I mean, personally, I've lived through a couple of Hurricanes as we like to call cyclones in this part of the world, and yes they are destructive and that's sad and all but not plot material.

It just rains a lot and there's a lot of wind but there is no storm chasing so how are they still the storm boys?

I don't know Rick, I don't buy it.

I liked this one better than book 1 for sure. I was hooked by the incoming cyclone, I wish we had spent more time in the aftermath of it but I guess that's what book 3 will be about so I'll be reading it. I liked getting to know Tully's family better, they were close and that was nice. They were different from how they were described in book 1 but it was fine. The relationship of Tully with his brother Ellis was cringy with the constant name-calling and nickname. All in good "fun" nothing problematic but I wasn't a fan. The gender dynamics in the family were not the best: the mom is interpreting Tully's behavior to his dad and always in the kitchen while the men board up the house, she also ropes Jeremiah into cooking... Some things didn't make sense with the cyclone . My biggest niggle remains with the relationship. We didn't really get more depth and the feelings seemed too big for the stage of the relationship they are in, they've known each other something like 4 weeks. They constantly talk about sex and their feelings but not really anything of substance. As a result the two MCs remain shallow and lack depth. I'll finish the series but it's not my favorite by this author.

this was so addicting I could not put it down omg

the story line between the cyclone and Tully and Jeremiah navigating their new relationship during a storm was everything.

Tully and Jeremiah make me crazy🫣

3.5 ⛈️⛈️⛈️

“Gawd, Ellis drawled as he stood up. “Someone save me. The sappiness is killing me.

And honestly, he had a point. Just three weeks into their "relationship," and Tully was already over-the-top pushy about the whole boyfriend thing, while Jeremiah seemed completely out of his depth. It felt like:
Tully: “I missed you so much!
Jeremiah: “I’ve been gone for literally one day.

The dynamic felt rushed, more like a script being followed than the kind of nuanced storytelling that usually makes characters feel real. The dialogue and interactions lacked depth, leaving their relationship feeling exaggerated and a little one-note.
Tully’s constant pressure for Jeremiah to say “I love you grated after a while. Why not respect his pace? It had only been three weeks, and Jeremiah was navigating so many changes. Instead, Tully kept pushing, sulking whenever Jeremiah didn’t say it back.

The Hazer scene was where the story truly turned for me. It was intense and devastating—the descriptions were so vivid I felt like I was right there, holding that door shut. 😟 But even then, the “I love you felt premature. The story could’ve benefited from letting that moment breathe, using the life-threatening situation to build emotional stakes without rushing to a resolution. Maybe separating them during the storm could have added some much-needed tension and drama. Instead, the plot moved too quickly, avoiding those moments of reflection that could have made the relationship feel more earned.

Tully’s family was a mixed bag. At first, their meddling felt a bit much—cringe, even—but as the story went on, it became clear how deeply they cared. They gave Jeremiah something he hadn’t experienced before: a sense of belonging and the warmth of a supportive family. That growth was a bright spot in the narrative.

“To surviving cyclones. Then I tapped Jeremiah’s. “And to more storms in the future.
Ellis shoved a forkful of pasta in his mouth, then spoke with his mouth full. “You’re both crazy.
I laughed. “Maybe. But he’s my kind of crazy.

Storm Boys and Mr. Percival—let’s see where they take us next.

This is a series that should be read in order as the next book takes up where the previous one left off. In this one the story continues two weeks after the ending of the first book. Jeremiah is now also officially in charge of Darwin’s Bureau of Meteorology, a single-manned weather station with equipment straight out of the last century.

Right after getting back from Melbourne, Jeremiah is meeting Tully's parents and also following a Category 5 cyclone...Americans would call it a category 5 hurricane... headed straight for Darwin. Preparing for the incoming cyclone and navigating their newly established relationship wasn't enough, Jeremiah and Tully also now have to deal with all the nosy news reporters after they learn of Jeremiah's past almost tragedy. Another reason to read book 1 first.

This was a great continuation of Jeremiah and Tully's story, and I really enjoyed seeing them fall hard and a bit fast for one another. They were also trying to navigate being in a new relationship while trying to survive the coming storm and warning everybody else of what was barreling their way. It was interesting getting to know Tully's family and a little bit more about the Northern Territory and Darwin. I think, personally it's a fun place to read about but seems a bit too much on the "untamed" side for me to put it on my travel plans.

Of course, the cyclone's arrived and left behind destruction and a few now homeless residents...but our stars of this story survived and found their "Happy Ever After"...but it was a close one.

Stronger than the previous book.
Two cute Aussie boys.
A compassionate family and a ball-busting lesbian.
Fun Aussie lingo and life.
Walker honestly has become really talented at writing action scenes.
The challenge of surviving was very exciting.
The ending is mush better.

oh man talk about a wild ride

The top end & a category 5 cyclone, devastating, heart breaking, exhilarating and cute.

A baby magpie called Mr Percival, a decrepit BoM office, a wild woman with inappropriate T-shirts, a needy storm chaser and a hero meteorologist.

Awesome read & I can’t wait for the next instalment of the story of Tully & Jeremiah.

I just have to say that Ms Walker nailed it! I'm still traumatized from hurricane Ian so this got to me in a way that many people won't understand. However, she got it right. I cried my way through much of this book and loved it! I highly recommend this series.

I loved this follow up to Outrun the Rain. I found the first one very fast paced, and this one even more so - picking up basically where the last one ended over the span of about a week.

Getting to see more development from both Jeremiah and Tully was great - but I especially enjoyed the inclusion of Tully’s family (notably Ellis) as well as a larger role from Doreen.

This book as a whole felt more established, and I am super excited for the third.

Fantastic second installment in the series with an exciting plot and the author takes advantage of the opportunity to soften Jeremiah a bit and help us learn more why he is the way he is, and he is given his time to shine. We already fell in love with Tully in book one so it was nice to see Jeremiah develop into an even more likable character.

This book did a fantastic job with the romance itself, with a ton of loving touches, thought, conversations, and caretaking scenes. I felt so warm and full from this book and it made me so happy!

Back in Darwin with Tully and Jeremiah as they prepare for one of the biggest storms to hit in decades. With these two there's never a dull moment, and plenty of hero moments. I'm looking forward to seeing what's in store for the boys in book 3.

Enjoyed this far more than book 1. The cyclone is exciting and dramatic and captures the scene well. Still didn’t love the romance, it’s all moved so quickly after knowing each other for 3weeks. There are 3 books for these two, why rush it? From the way Tully described his relationship with his family in book 1, I was expecting some tension but it was all very happy families. I really like the science nerd stuff, the natural disaster and the Australian setting.

No baby magpie will ever hold a candle to Nugget the wombat from Red Dirt Heart #nugget4eva

I don’t know why Tully’s narrative voice needs his g’s dropped as well as his speaking voice, but this grated on me, especially as it wasn’t consistently all the g’s but about 80% of them which really irritated my brain.

God I love Tully and Jeremiah! Their swoony adorable stories spans over three books however neither of them are too long. I’ve already read two today.

I’m onto book 3.

Tully is the badass storm chaser for fun, millionaire who works for his family’s company by day. In book 2, their relationship takes full stage and what I love about book 2 is that they’re now fully in a committed relationship. It’s freaking adorable!! The boyfriend part! Gah. I just love adorable nerds and badass men who make them feel better about their insecurities

4.5 stars This was fabulous! It was this close 🤏🏻 to being a full 5 stars. I’ll get to that in a minute. This story was constantly moving and it kept my attention right until the last chapter.

***There are spoilers here of the first book***

At the end of book one, Jeremiah was thrust into the position of heading up Darwin’s Bureau of Meteorology and he relieved Doreen of her duties. This book kicks in right where that left off with Jeremiah moving from Melbourne to Darwin, much to Tully’s delight. Their relationship is moving full speed ahead and I think Jeremiah is a bit overwhelmed by that. He hasn’t had much affection growing up and it’s all new for him.

Upon Jeremiah‘a return to the bureau, Doreen alerts him of a storm on the radar coming down from Malaysia that she’s been keeping an eye on. It’s Cyclone Hazer and it’s on course to land right in Darwin. This is what the book centers around. It kept me on the edge of my seat! On the east coast of the US, we call these hurricanes, and I’ve experienced one. It was nowhere near as devastating as what they are expecting in Darwin.

I loved the tension that filled this book! It kept everything interesting. I loved seeing Tully’s protective side. He was very much the alpha male throughout this book and he’s good at it. But we also got to see more of Jeremiah‘s take charge attitude as far as the bureau is concerned. He feels it’s his sole responsibility to keep the people of Darwin safe and informed. NR Walker did a great job with this whole situation.

There were just a few things that bothered me in the story. First, I wondered what happened to Jeremiah’s storm footage from the Kakadu bunker in book one. The whole reason he and Tully even went to the Darwin Bureau of Meteorology was to get equipment so they could download that footage to see if it was damaged or usable. We never get to find out!!

Second, it bothered me when Tully seemed to have a personality transplant in the last chapter of the book. He became clingy and needy and it just didn’t fit. I understand he went through a trauma, but idk. Maybe it could have been done differently? I’m not an author, and I know these are NRW’s boys, but his 180° change didn’t sit right with me.

Third, I have a thing with reading about girly parts. While I do read MF romance, I don’t like those parts. I certainly don’t expect to come across any mention of girly bits in a MM romance. Doreen is a lesbian and we get to meet her lovely partner Suri in this book. They’re great characters. But I don’t want to read about the vulva on Doreen’s shirt or all the other inappropriate shirts she wears. Personal preference here, and I’m sure this doesn’t bother a lot of people out there.

I’m definitely looking forward to book 3! Regardless of how I feel about Doreen’s shirts, I do hope she’s in that book as well. She’s a great character. (Just leave her shirts out of it. 😉) Maybe I’ll even find out what happened to Jeremiah’s bunker footage!

***side note: There’s mention of Cyclone Tracy in this book which hit Darwin in 1974. I took the time to look it up and it brought me to tears. I saw headlines that said “The Day Darwin Died. It was especially awful because Tracy struck in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve. I watched a video and there was a song with the lyrics “Santa never made it into Darwin. It made the events in this book so much more real. Tears, I yell ya. Lots of tears for the people of Darwin.

3.5 stars/B-

The storyline about the cyclone is gripping and the author's descriptions are vivid, but the romance didn't work for me here. Things are moving really quickly; Jeremiah has moved in with Tully because of his sudden transfer to the Met Bureau in Darwin, and while Tully is all in, Jeremiah is still struggling to believe someone could actually love and want him, because he's always been regarded as something of an oddity. I do like them as characters and a couple, but things have moved really fast - from 0-60 in the blink of an eye - and I'm feeling as though something is missing.

Also. Jeremiah finds out near the end of the previous book that Tully is actually loaded and far from the carefree bum he appears to be, and hints were dropped that Tully and his family didn't see eye-to-eye, so I was anticipating a bit of conflict from that quarter - but there's none. The Larsons are a close-knit, loving family who clearly accept and love Tully, and are very welcoming to Jeremiah. Not that I particularly wanted them to be horrible, but I'd expected a bit of a clash between their corporate lifestyle and Tully's more free-spirited one.

The way the author writes about the aftermath of the cyclone is so emotional - it's brutally honest, and it's heartbreaking to read about all these people who have lost everything.

I continue to love Doreen, Jeremiah's no-nonsense predecessor at the Bureau, and Jeremiah's brother, Ellis is a fun addition to the cast.

Other niggles: Jeremiah once again risks not only his life, but that of other people when he rushes out into the cyclone to rescue... a bird. Seriously? I know he's meant to be a bit reckless with his own safety, but as Tully tells him afterward, opening the door to the building could have brought the whole thing down on everyone inside.

And something I forgot to mention in my review of - for some reason the author has chosen to write Tully's speech without a final "g" in many words - huntin' shootin' fishin' style - in both dialogue AND narrative, which is a strange choice. Many of us speak that way, but I've rarely seen it written like that, and it got annoying quickly. (I'm not a fan of written out dialects in general - no "verra"s and "dinnae"s for me, please!)

So... I really enjoyed the plot in this one and will definitely pick up book three, but I'll be downgrading my expectations as far as the romance goes.

I really really like Jeremiah and Tully. They're such a sweet couple still trying to figure out how to be in a relationship together. It's all come together so fast, and Jeremiah still isn't very good with the emotional stuff...or well really words at all. He's adorably uncomfortable as he's meeting Tully's family and the people in his life. Of course this is a Storm Boys novel so a storm was going to have to be in play, and it's a doozy. A Category 5 cyclone bearing down on them and only Jeremiah's job in his little outdated weather outpost to help ready the coast for it's impact.

This was a wild ride as everyone found themselves in the middle of the biggest storm practically ever. I'll take the science of it all with a grain of salt, but the plot points themselves were gripping. This story pulls you right along and I was crossing my fingers all along the way that they'd figure things out. I love how supportive Tully is of Jeremiah and how completely he refuses to back away from being all in in their relationship. Even if that means weathering a cyclone in the weather station away from the rest of his family.

The devastation of what a storm like this can do isn't shied away from either. It was easy to picture all the damage left in the wake of the storm. It's not going to be easy for everyone to recover from this, and it reminds you of unfortunately how often this sort of horror is felt around the world.

I look forward to the next book and hope for everyone in Darwin to start to recover from all of the damage done. Jeremiah and Tully are stronger than ever and they truly care about their community. You know they're going to be involved in its recovery efforts.
