This free guide will walk you through the necessary steps in creating a professional digital file of your book using Microsoft Word 2010 for quick upload to Kindle Direct Publishing.
These are the topics we'll discuss:

We've written this guide with you in mind. We'll walk you through the key steps for every part of the process, and while it may seem repetitive at times, we want to make sure you have exactly the information you need, when you need it.
And don't forget this is a process! Publishing on Kindle is easy and takes only 5 minutes of your time but correctly preparing your book for success on Kindle takes time and effort. Don't worry; if you follow the steps we outline here, you should feel confident you'll end up with a successfully designed and formatted book and one you will be proud to see for sale on Amazon.
This is a must read for any author thinking of self-publishing. It explains how to format your book and what readers expect and all free. Thank you Amazon.
This is a companion volume and you do need the other one which is all about the technicality of getting it on the Web. However this short guide deals with the writing process, explaining which programs to use (Word is favoured, and I recommend the newest version you can get) and not to use tabs or two returns but to use other ways of formatting your paragraphs, available in Word and with illustrations from the latest version of Word. This means that the book will appear properly on Kindle and on phones, IPads and other platforms. There is a lot of this data already on the publishing pages on line so the books are not obligatory but if you read them you have a better chance of getting it right.
If like me you are sick and tired of waiting for publishers to even return your manuscript in stamped addressed envelopes if they don't want it, or weary of waiting for a reply to your e-mailed enquiry, then take matters into your own hands. Become a more professional publisher than the publishers. There are a lot of sites out there trying to charge you for all kinds of services so you can spend thousands before your book ever hits the net or the printed page. Don't use any of them. Friends will help proofread if you need it, check all data, even items you are sure of, take good photos for the cover or use an image from the selection available on Kindle. You don't need an agent, or a publisher, who mainly take your money and tell you to do the publicity. Publishing houses are great for well-established authors who want to get into every bookshop but they are very, very bad at giving new talent a chance. You don't need their permission. Read this book and see how simple it is. Go do it.
"Building Your Book for Kindle", written and freely provided by the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) people, is an excellent step-by-step guide to the world of self-publishing for Kindle. I've downloaded several dozen similar books, and read at least parts of all of them, but this one stands out head and shoulders above the rest.
Following the simple guides included in this booklet, I have now uploaded and published my first official short story for Kindle! Time will tell if the good advice will translate into good sales, but my confidence level is about 90 points higher than it was before I came across this guide.
If you are already successfully writing and publishing for Kindle, you may know all this stuff already. But on the off chance there is some useful tidbit you've overlooked, the book is free. There's no downside! Get the book, read it, and even if you discover that you DID know every single fact in the book, at least you now have an added layer of confidence in your abilities. What's not to love?
For the rest of us, this is a worthwhile addition to our growing book collections.
If you're working with Word, this is probably a helpful guide. If you're not, they pretty much direct you to start over in Word. I used WordPerfect x8 which has PDF publishing as well as MOBI and EPUB functions. The PDF worked well for paperback editions of my book, the MOBI worked well for Kindle, and EPUB worked well for Kobo. However, Barnes & Noble Nook Publishing would not accept my EPUB file. I had to pull my WordPerfect document into Word, clean up all the weird codes (page numbering turned to hieroglyphics, every time I had a hard return and a space it made a hard page break, etc.), then mark it for the table of contents. It took about 6 hours and was annoying, but B&N immediately accepted the Word file and published my ebook.
I believe this info written as it was should be very useful to newbies.
I believe this Amy be very beneficial but I have yet to try all this out as yet. I am working on an ebook or so as often as I can and as I can figure out how to make that ebook turn out much better, Please don't give up on newbies who have had to start from scratch to get as far as I have been able to precede without any regular helping knowing how hands. I would recommend this for those who have Mac laptops who needs a lot of help too from what I have read thru in one seating. I believe I received this for free by using KU and in return, here is my honest review. Super job Kindle! By Sunny.
(NOTE: I'm stingy with stars. For me 2 stars means a good book or a B. 3 stars means a very good book or a B+. 4 stars means an outstanding book or an A {only about 5% of the books I read merit 4 stars}. 5 stars means an all time favorite or an A+ {Only one of 400 or 500 books rates this!).
The great news is that I can listen to a book a day at work. The bad news is that I can’t keep up with decent reviews. So I’m going to give up for now and just rate them. I hope to come back to some of the most significant things I listen to and read them and then post a review.
I chose 5 stars because of the clarity of the instructions. I would recommend this for any beginning eBook author. What I like most is the fact I can publish an eBook for very little money. Caveat emptor: some website warned me not to go for free ISBN's. (Was that Bowler?) More research needed; also the increased earning and saving of my money!
As a technical write-up, this is fairly good, it offers enough background that one can usually use the notes provided here to use Google to find what the latest details of how things are done.
Usually I have used Smashwords to "publish" various things, but as everyone here knows, 99% of what gets "published" is pure crap, and the ease at which people around the planet write and "publish" things has made finding that rare 1% worth reading ever more difficult.
If you have ever thought of writing a book and submitting it to Amazon for sale as a Kindle, this is the book for you. I thought the directions and photos were excellent, even for a non-computer person, such as myself. However, I read through the other reviews and found them to be helpful too. Before I get my book together, I plan to reread the book and the reviews. Obviously, some of the reviewers have already used these directions and have some excellent insights.
During my countries first covid lockdown I determined to resurrect my own novel which had been written in the 1980s. A Chance In A Million was put on the Kindle market within a couple of weeks of tidying up and I needed to read this book to help produce a reasonable copy for sale. I was very impressed with the clear instructions both in this self help manual and the website itself and managed to release the novel with the minimum of fuss. A great experience.
I found this quick and easy guide very helpful for beginners or for people who have no clue how to publish their book for kindle. I have never had to format my own books before and this helped me get it done quickly and without hassle. Have some spare time? Want to learn how to format yourself? Then this is one read I recommend for all upcoming authors who want to self-publish.
Clear instructions to going thru publishing process for Kindle!
Great directions to complete the publishing process! It is detailed enough to make the publishing process fun! Best directions to get your book published correctly without sweating the details.
Thank you so much KDP, I'm just a newbie and sad to say I'm using my phone when uploading a manuscript that's why it's all messy. Now, I have to do it at the net cafe to make things right. Thank you so much.
The instructions are detailed and easy to follow with the help of picture examples. Definitely a book I'll be referring back to often when I'm ready to publish my book.
Honestly it was really hard to understand this book. I just had to go do someone else and had to do it for me both me and my girl couldn't figure it all on our own. Maybe we could computer work I guess.
A simple guide to formatting and uploading for Kindle
I am grateful Amazon made the time to write a simple, easy to understand book on how to write & publish for Kindle. Just the basics though, hence only four stars out of five as maybe I’d like to set up preordering.
Great information with simple steps to take to successfully format an ebook. I am so glad I read this. It only took half an hour to go through but saved me so much time and frustration.
I am a first time publisher and this book answered so many questions. I hope my first book is as professionally done. I prefer the step by step format.
