Lethal Pursuit

Rate this book
Security Forces Lieutenant Maya Lopez is right at home in a war zone: she's been fighting all her life. A hard-won commission in the air force has brought her to Afghanistan, and if she plays her cards right, she could end up with an FBI job. It won't be easy, but that just makes her more determined.

Jackson Thatcher is a protector in all senses of the word. A pararescue jumper with Southern-boy charm, he easily captures Maya's interest, but her trust is another story. He's sexy, strong and caring, but she makes it clear she's no damsel in distress. She's never relied on any man, and she's not about to start now.

When Maya and Jackson become pawns in a radical warlord's deadly game, they find themselves on the run and must depend on each other if they want to make it out alive.

Maya
It's always special when a story features a heroine who lives up to my expectations. Security Forces Lieutenant Maya Lopez is definitely one of those kick-ass women who can hold her own and then some. She gives as good as she gets. Both MCs have to suffer in Lethal Pursuit, especially Maya. Due to her tough childhood she always had very specific opinions how she would hold herself at a distance when it came to relationships and love. In fact, she prefers no-strings-attached sex; she is in complete control. All. The. Time. Add in the life and death situation that she had to face in Lethal Pursuit, and it definitely made her dig deep. It put a lot of things into perspective, and at the end she could finally let go. It was a difficult process to go through for Maya but also very rewarding. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Jackson
Pararescue jumper (PJ) Jackson Thatcher who has Comanche ancestors is another gorgeous alpha specimen made Kaylea style. He fully lives up to the creed That others may live. A strong and courageous warrior with healing hands. Protective and caring to boot. Job-related everything seems to be fine, however, when he zeroes in on Maya, he is out of his depth for the first time in his life. Maya's behavior confuses him, yet he is not willing to cave in. If anything, he is more than determined to unravel this woman. Plus, Maya could always count on Jackson. He was the man who grounded her. He was her anchor, he was there to catch her. They had each other's back.

Kaylea Cross and Cindy Gerard are my go-to authors when I want to read a great military romantic suspense book that could urge me to bite my nails off (and I'm not used to biting nails at all). And once again Kaylea did not disappoint and knocked it out of the park with Lethal Pursuit. Even though the story is rather heavy on the suspense and action part, I must say that the final 10 %--that were all about Jackson and Maya and their love for each other--have been incredibly emotional and romantic. Beautiful. It's probably one of her best endings that she has written to date. IF you are a fan of the series then you know that Jackson and Maya have been introduced in the previous books and . I had an inkling that these two would form a perfect couple, and I'm happy to say they did. The Bagram Special Ops series has (possibly) come to an end with my favorite book that featured my favorite couple of the series.

My question was: Is Lethal Pursuit the final book in the series? If you'd like to read the authors reply, please open the spoiler.

WARNING
Lethal Pursuit contains explicit sex and language as well as explicit violence and Kudos to the author who accomplished to write this particular part of the plot in a realistic way that had me in an emotional heap. I won't beat around the bush. It was really bad, and I had to swallow hard.

Recommended read.

5 stars just isn't enough! This. Is. Amazing!

Kaylea Cross outdid herself with this third book in her Bagram Special Ops series. She totally blew me away! Intense, brutal, romantic, and sexy, even writing this review I'm still shaking as I remember how things went so horribly wrong before they went so beautifully right!
U.S. Code of Military Conduct, Article 3:

If I am captured, I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and to aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor favors from the enemy.

My review...

To say that Lethal Pursuit is a gripping story is putting it mildly. To say I couldn't put it down is not an exaggeration. Start to finish Maya and Jackson's story had me glued to my seat, hands shaking, closing my eyes because I couldn't bear to read what was going to happen next, yet unable to look away as I watched - yes, it felt like I was watching (because that's how incredibly talented Ms. Cross is) - this story unfold.

And the truth is, I still can't find the words to do this story justice so I'll leave you with this:

The bottom line...

If you're a fan of military romantic suspense and you haven't yet experienced Kaylea Cross's stories, you're not just missing out, you're missing out big time, because they're not just a story, they are an experience! And I know some of you are wondering, so I'll tell you now - yes, this book can be read out of order, but don't do it! Once you've read Lethal Pursuit I know you'll rush out to get the first two books, and so you might as well read them in order and get to know the incredible men and women who put their lives on the line and, in the process, found their happily ever afters, too.

My thanks to Carina Press and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this amazing story! It was...well... amazing!!

Lethal Pursuit was AMAZING! I can’t believe I waited so long to read this one!

Right away I was hooked into the story line and finding it extremely hard to put it down. This story is about Maya Lopez who is a Security Forces Lieutenant in the Airforce and Jackson Thatcher who is a pararescue jumper. They are very attracted to one another even if Maya has a hard time letting her true feelings for Jackson out. Then one day, they are attacked by a terrorist group and Maya, Jackson and the Secretary of State are taken captive. This part of the story is riddled with violence, they all take their turn in being tortured. These scenes are vividly described and with each encounter my heart was racing and my mind wondering how they were ever get out alive. While these scenes are brutal, I loved just how much Maya and Jackson were there for each other, trying to keep each other safe and giving what little comfort they could to each other.

Jackson was a FANTASTIC hero, one of the best I have ever read about. He was smart, brave, gentle and caring not to mention SEXY! He was all about keeping Maya and the Secretary of the State safe even if it meant he had to carry them to safety.

Maya was a kick-ass warrior! She fought with everything she had to keep Jackson safe. She also had a very dark and tragic past that made her the way she was.

If you like your reads with loads of action, you WILL get PLENTY here. It was nonstop, pulse pounding, mind blowing on the edge of you seat type of action.

The heat level for me was what you would expect in most romance books. I usually like my reads a bit more spicy than what was offered up but the sexual tension, the way they looked into each other’s eyes was really all I needed. Don’t get me wrong, there was a few sensuous scenes throughout this read that will satisfy the most jaded readers.

The ending was a good one BUT I really wished an epilogue would have been added in. This was my only complaint on an otherwise perfect for me read.

I LOVED EVERYTHING about this book and I’m SO GLAD that I finally had the chance to read it. So with that being said, I’m going to jump right into book 4, Danger Close because there is NO WAY I’m going to let it sit for another moment.

I would definitely recommend this series for those who love a fantastic military romance filled with loads of action and phenomenal characters. Just keep in mind that if you don’t care for violence in your reads then this might not be a series for you.

Special Note: This series is complete with 5 books that have already released. It has been a long time since I’ve read Deadly Descent (Bagram Special Ops, #1) & Tactical Strike (Bagram Special Ops, #2) so their stories are not fresh in my mind but I was able to read Lethal Pursuit (Bagram Special Ops, #3) easily enough as a stand-alone. Just know that if you do decide to give this book a try, I have a feeling that you will also want read books 1 & 2.

This was a really great read.

Kaylea Cross has always been one of my go-to authors when I feel like a solid, fast-paced military romance and she definitely delivered here with this one.

In fact, I think she outdid herself.

description

This story went in a direction that I hadn't expected and, most importantly, I felt that Cross really stayed true to to what could/might really happen if such a situation had occurred in real life.

Sometimes I think authors sugarcoat certain situations in an effort to keep the reader comfortable or because they don't want certain things to happen to their characters; however, I for one always appreciate when author are bold and go for it.

description

Maya was a great female lead and I appreciated her strength, vulnerability, and growth. And Jackson was charming, yet strong as well.

Not to mention he had a Texan drawl - which I am ALWAYS a sucker for.

description

Most awesome though?

When gif-hunting for this review, I came across this gem:

description

Oh man, I have no words.

Except as my former drill instructor Marine boss says:

"That's fucking outstanding. OUTstanding."

And PS, I can't WAIT for Honor's book!

This was one of the BEST books I've read this year!!

The writing, characters, and the story.. OH. MY. GOD!! This story had me engaged right from the beginning, and on the edge of my seat. I laughed, and cried (Oh Boy..did I cry), and I was angry on behalf of the characters and the situation they were in. Many times while reading this book I wished I could just kill one of the characters myself !

Maya... you are one of my favorite female characters, and I will not forget you!
I don't think I've ever read a female character that I wanted to be more like. Her strength, honor, dedication, courage, compassion, and love... un-be-liev-able!

Jackson... you are friggen PERFECT!!

A warrior, artist (he plays piano & sings), gentleman, and a compassionate medic/doctor.. like I said PERFECT!

Kaylea Cross is one of my favorite author's and she DID. NOT. DISAPPOINT. with this story!

Wow, What a book, this is one that I would really love to give 6 stars!....I honestly thought it was amazing and didn’t think that Kaylea could top the previous two stories in this series but I was so so wrong. Several days after reading this I was still kept thinking wow!

Some of the content is quite difficult to read and there are not that many writers out there that feel brave enough to write about a woman being tortured whilst held prisoner. Maya is one heck of a strong woman who refused to give in and I even shed a tear or two whilst reading it and my heart went out to her. My heart went out to Jackson too as he had to watch Maya being taken off, knowing what was going to happen, hearing the beating, hearing her screams and then seeing what they had done to her and knowing there was nothing he could do to stop it, he had to stay silent and not give away just how much she meant to him otherwise their capturers would use her against him and they would be killed.

This falls into the group of best read books in 2013. I couldn't put the book down, couldn’t tear myself away and read it in one sitting.

With the exception of KC's books, I don't do military/combat stories at all. The gory some of war inflicted damages to humankind are too depressing for me to endure. And I had stopped reading this book a few times because I was too scared to read and to experience the unthinkable of men-at-war ambiance. Never cease to amaze me how vividly detailed KC described the environments and settings of her stories.

The non stop suspense and action one after another kept me on edge through out the whole book. Lots if WTF moments leaving me clueless to where it was going, a few times too.

I didn't care much for Maya before, considering she was all hard and condescending towards Jackson in book #2 but she mellowed out a bit and I approved her for him.

I loved Jackson from the start. I loved his strong and silent vibe. We know that the silent ones are always the intense ones.

Enjoyable neck snapping 5stars.

Another great story by Kaylea Cross.

It's difficult to talk about that one without spoiling it so I will simply list what I liked, didn't like, and my reservations.

What I liked:
1. I really liked Maya a lot. She is a badass heroine but she's also funny. She's strong and soft. I thought her character was really well thought and balanced.

2. I LOVED Jackson <3 <3 <3

3. I also loved Maya & Jackson as a couple and how their relationship evolved.

4. I really liked Doug character.

5. To the exception of one point, I really loved the story. I almost read it in one sitting. I think it was the most emotional of the series.

What I didn't like:
1. The story is perfect as it is written but still, I would have loved having more of Cam and Ryan (I know, I'm being greedy but I really loved these two).

2. Around 30% there is a scene I didn't like at all. The scene wasn't free, it totally made sense in the context they were in but still, it totally took me by surprise and I really didn't like it.

My reservations: (sorry they are spoilers)
1.

2.

This is the third book in the immensely satisfying Bagram series and takes us right back into the world of hot PJs, military service-men and women and terrorists.

The suspense plot and villain is carried over from the last book and for those who don't like it be warned that this book has a lot of graphic violence and that aspect made me uncomfortable but I fell in love with our hero, sexy, sweet, awesome Jackson Thatcher, who can sing, wants to be a doctor and actually respects women.

Security Forces Lieutenant Maya Lopez is one tough woman, she had to be, to survive the horror of her childhood and before things go to hell, gives Jackson one hell of a ride but keeps herself in check, because that is who she is with men.

Then, their life changes when both of them along with the Secretary of Defense are taken captive and undergo torture. This aspect of the book was too long for me but it was trying to be realistic I get that, doesn't mean I have to like it.

The romance was nice despite it not being front and centre. All in all I would recommend this series.

Lethal Pursuit
4.5 Stars

Jackson Thatcher, known amongst the SpecOp elite as the "woman whisperer", has met the one woman apparently immune to his charms, Security Forces Lieutenant Maya Lopez. A difficult childhood in L.A. has turned Maya into a fighter, and she has no intention of allowing the sexy PJ under her skin. But when a deadly attack pits Jackson and Maya against a fanatical warlord, they will have to rely on each other to survive.

Series note: This book continues the story arc that began in book #1. As such, it is recommended that the series be read in order.

Not only are the action and suspense top-notch, but Maya and Jackson's romance is the best in the series thus far.

Although slow to begin as Jackson and Maya circle each other like prizefighters, the plot and the romance really get going once they are and their initial attraction develops into an intense and intimate bond that goes far beyond a physical connection.

Jackson is an incredible hero and puts both Cam (book #1) and Ryan (book #2) to shame. It takes longer to warm up to Maya as she adopts a ball-buster attitude to conceal her soft heart and vulnerability. But Jackson sees right past this to the caring woman beneath the kick-ass facade.

Cross pulls out all the stops once again with the suspense plot. There are some difficult scenes as both Maya and Jackson are forced to . Thankfully Cross avoids the infuriating trope, which would have made this an immediate DNF. The villains are truly despicable, but there is a compelling twist at the end that will apparently play out in the next two books.

Book #4 continues with the 4th member of the girl squad, nurse Erin Kelley, and a mysterious stranger. Looking forward to it.

First off Lethal Pursuit is an amazing novel second Kaylea Cross, Kaylea Cross, KAYLEA CROSS! Woo!Okay now that's out of the way, Maya Lopez is no shrinking flower. She doesn't need a man to keep her going or to fight her battles for her. She is strong, she is capable and she will kick your ass if you cross the line. Strangely Jackson Thatcher seems almost more kind hearted than she does despite his masculinity but we get to see Maya start to warm up to Jackson and its great getting to see Jackson get to have a female that can handle herself and have his back when he needs it.Lethal Pursuit ain't your mama's romance. This novel is packed full of punches that will leave you breathless!I am thrilled and I can't wait to discover more of Kaylea's work!Note: This may be a Harlequin book but its not like the others you've read before. This book will blow you away and rise above your expectations.

Until next time book lovers...

5 Heart Pounding Action Filled Stars!

"I am an American Airman.
Wingman, Leader, Warrior.
I will never leave an Airman behind,
I will never falter, And
I will not fail."

Wow! just, wow! This book was amazing from start finish it was filled with heart pumping action and just when you thought it was safe to breathe again you were thrust into more danger. The writing was incredible, the images so vividly created by Cross have you feeling every single terrifying emotion.

This book was an emotional roller-coaster filled with action, twists, happiness, desperate sadness, true bravery and of course an all-consuming love story.

Maya and Jackson were both true warriors and heroes my heart broke for them both so many times as I tried to even imagine the depth of the hell they were enduring, which like always when I read this series has me reflecting on the true bravery of all our serving troops.

Jackson's character was just so perfect he wasn't obnoxious or cocky but sweet, determined and so damn brave. He had so much love, patience and tenderness with Maya, that he was willing to do anything to protect her.

"That Others May Live" wasn't just a motto he lived by as a PJ. It was everything he stood for. And if he was going to die saving a life today, he wanted it to be Maya's.

Maya was a total bad-ass with such a beautiful heart that she kept concealed to protect herself from the awful pain she had endured early in life. Despite the desperate and terrifying situation they found themselves in I still found my heart jumping as her love for Jackson was shining through the darkness.

The thing I really love about this series is that the sex and romance are not the only thing happening in the story, it weaved seamlessly and more realistically into a larger story that is filled with adrenaline rushing action and set at such a fast pace that from the very first moments you are totally and utterly consumed with the story that is unfolding....... sorry kids you may have to cook your own dinner and do your own washing today, mummy is BUSY!

The story was intense, gripping and thought-provoking, I truly enjoy the fact that Cross also gives us dialogue from the "other side" too and whilst I do not agree with their actions I think it always make the story more engaging having their perspective too. I also love the fact that she takes the time to incorporate the peaceful and generous people in Afghanistan who have honour and help the soldiers in need.

I have said it before and I will say it again - Not a second goes by that I do not regret reading this series sooner.... do not make the same mistake I did...... READ IT NOW!!!

These book whilst a work of fiction have definitely encouraged me to step back and really think about and appreciate the other equally as bad-ass branches in our military (not just the SEALs, Rangers etc) who sacrifice so much in their bid to make the world a safer place.

An Absolutely Incredible Read

5+++ Stars

I think this is going to be the easiest book review I have ever written. Over my 46 years I have read hundreds if not thousands of book. Some good, some bad, most solidly in the middle somewhere but LETHAL PURSUIT is, simply put, beyond good, it’s an absolutely extraordinary read!!!

As the 3rd book in Kaylea Dz’s Bagram Special Ops series, LETHAL PURSUIT tells the story of Security Forces Lieutenant Maya Lopez and Jackson Thatcher, a pararescue jumper. While Jackson may have attracted Maya’s interest, her trust is something that will be much harder for him to win. Maya has worked doubly hard to earn her rank and the respect of her fellow soldier’s. Jackson is a protector to his core and is charming and sexy with Southern manners that are deep rooted.

Their story develops as they are providing medical care in a small, rural Afghan community. As their day long mission is about to come to an end, they are taken prisoner and with them is a high ranking military leader. Will they escape? Will they live? Well, you have to buy the book to find out the answers to those questions. Suffice it to say both Maya and Jackson have to call on every bit of their strength and courage, wit and wisdom and learn to trust each other in order to make it thru alive. Can they do that??

Kaylea Cross knows how to tell a story like very few others. LETHAL PURSUIT is gritty, relevant, disturbing at times and down-right hot and oh, so sexy at other times. Cross takes us on Maya and Jackson’s horrific journey as POW’s in a way that also allows their journey as two people yearning for each other. It’s a very well-balanced book. Dz’s doesn’t throw in arbitrary sex scenes; what she does manage to do is place tender, caring moments where they most belong amongst times that are beyond hideous.

I’m not going to lie, LETHAL PURSUIT can be difficult to read at times. There are parts that are harsh, but they are, sadly, true to life for POW’s. But there are also parts that are so tender and loving they bring more tears to your eyes than the scenes that are more arduous to read. I encourage you to read it from start to finish, don’t skip the tough scenes, as missing them will take away from the story. Kaylea Cross puts the reader at the scene and if you miss any of it, you miss a lot of Maya and Jackson’s story.

I loved Kaylea Dz’s books before reading LETHAL PURSUIT , she has a fan for life after reading it. I can’t wait for her next story, whether it be a part of her Bagram Special Ops series or her Titanium Security series!!

Intense, gripping and emotional. Those are the top three words that come to mind when describing how I felt about Lethal Pursuit by Kaylea Cross. I think this is the best book in the Bagram Special Ops Series. The highs and lows the characters go through, and the reader because of the fantastic writing by Kaylea, are incredible. I have read just about all of Kaylea’s books and I wasn’t sure if I was ready for another book set in the Middle East, however, Kaylea takes this one in a very different direction and it is done extremely well.

We follow Jackson and Maya in Lethal Pursuit. They are a very unique couple. Jackson grew up in Texas with his mother and three sisters, so he tends understand women more than most guys. He is alpha at the core but a protective one. Maya had a very difficult childhood which is the reason she is emotionally closed-off and weary of men. These two characters are very compelling to read about because you really feel for both of them and want them to be happy. They are not overly dramatic which I enjoyed immensely. Jackson learns that in order to win Maya over he has to let her take charge. It is refreshing to see a hero show patience and not run in to be the knight in shining armor.

The romance and suspense are very well balanced in this story. Kaylea knows when to put in the hot and passionate scenes and when it doesn’t make sense. Because of the properly placed scenes they tend to be so much more heartfelt and romantic in my opinion. In Lethal Pursuit, especially, the main scene near the end was a pivotal point in the plot and was done extremely well.

There are parts of Lethal Pursuit that just tore me up emotionally and I couldn’t hold back the tears. Other times I was crying because things happening were incredibly sweet. Lethal Pursuit was very hard to put down because I had to know what was going to happen next. Were they going to be rescued? Was Jackson finally going to win Maya’s heart? Never fear, though, because it all plays out in a very satisfying way and you feel comfortable closing the end of the book with a smile on your face. If you are looking for a riveting and highly emotional romantic suspense story, I highly recommend Lethal Pursuit.

Kaylea Cross is possibly the best military romance writer I’ve read, and each and every one of her books so far has earned a place on my ‘favourites list.

Those mistakes other authors make, the mistakes that make people wary of picking up a book in this genre? Cross never makes them. Her characters react the way people really would. For example, there’s not a bizarre ‘sex while injured or being chased by gunmen scene in sight.

The two top reasons Cross stands head and shoulders above most other writers in this genre are that she does an astounding amount of research no randomly throwing around cool terms like “SEAL or “Black Ops in the place of information or character development and that she really knows how to build a relationship between her main characters. There’re real emotions involved, not just a heap of mental lusting after the guy’s big muscles or whatever.

This is an author who really delves into the mindset of both soldiers and of the people they’re fighting against. Everyone is three-dimensional, and the story is so much better because of it.

Never a light and fluffy author, this is a deliciously dark book, probably one of her darkest. The action and suspense builds and builds and builds, with no random breaks where the danger is forgotten in order to make way for erroneous love scenes in ridiculous places. The endless danger paves the way for something much better: the hero getting to show his heroic abilities, and the heroine proving she can hold her own in a tough situation.

I couldn’t pick a favourite part of this story, as it had me hooked from start to finish. I would have read it in one sitting if I could, but my life had a few dramas in store for me that weekend! Though you can absolutely read Lethal Pursuit on its own, I don’t see why you wouldn’t want to read the series in order (this is the third). Each book is as good as the next it’s a fantastic, consistently good series.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

MY REVIEW:

Amazing. Truly and utterly amazing. Have I mentioned amazing yet?

Cross has done it again with her addition to the Bagram Special Ops series, Lethal Pursuit.

I’ve been waiting for Lt Lopez’s book, and Cross didn’t disappoint in that wait. The writing was on par and very description. The action was gripping and suspenseful. The heat generated was enough to call for ice. And the love story was gut wrenchingly beautiful.

Cross developed two characters that, even though they are fiction, create a lasting impression on the reader’s mind. These two will stick with you for days—perhaps weeks—after you’ve finished the book. In fact, the story really never ends for you.

If you want high-class; you got it.

If you want lusty scenes; you got it.

If you want something memorable to read; go get it.

Five out of five stars.

This one's going to stay with me for quite a while, and was quite honestly a bit difficult for me to read. Ms. Cross has made the action so real (as she has in each of the 2 previous books) that I felt like I was right there with these characters. I don't want to give away any of the plot, but I'll just say that they go through some tough stuff in this one. It's the tough stuff that shows what a person is made of, and Maya and Jackson truly show their strength here.

One of the things I love about this series is the fact that the women are such strong heroines. The men are definitely alphas, but completely respectful of their heroine's abilities. While this series is definitely heavier on the action/suspense than the romance, when they do come together it's worth the wait!

4.5 Stars!!!

Intense. That's the best word for this book. As expected, Ms. Cross kicked my ass on this one. This book is not for the faint of heart. Maya and Jackson are thrust into a nightmare situation that kept me on the edge of my seat.

I was so excited I downloaded this book the day it was released. I didn't think it was as good as the first two but I still loved it. I did think the captivity part of the book went on a little too long though. Can't wait for more books in this series.

Definitely my favourite book of the series which I am devouring over a long weekend.

Maya was completely kickass and the scenes where Jackson had to listen to her were simultaneously heartwrenching and something which I have secretly wanted to see more of in suspense novels. I loved how she fought through the pain and how Jackson tried to soothe her afterwards.

Review originally posted here:

I have glommed onto Cross ever since Mandi introduced me to her a couple years ago. With the Bagram series, I wasn’t sure how I would like the fraternization, but so far I’ve enjoyed each story. However, with this book, I think Cross has surpassed everything else she’s written.

Maya likes her job as a Security Forces Lieutenant, despite the fact that she can’t act on her strong feelings toward Jackson. Part of what holds her back is her past, filled with dark and bitter memories that she can’t shake. Going into the military was her saving grace, and she wants to do the best possible job she can in order to have a chance at working for the FBI when she gets out.

Jackson wants Maya for himself, but his job as a PJ and their rank has him keeping somewhat of a distance until Maya changes all that one night. After their night together, Jackson can’t get her out of his head. When they are both taken hostage along with a senior US official, they will be held by a madman, and forced to endure things they never thought possible. But together, they will fight to survive.

I always say that the most suspenseful scene I’ve ever read in a book was in No Turning Back, she may have topped it with THIS WHOLE BOOK! While there was some downtime in the beginning and end, it felt like it was constant go-go-go, sit on the edge of your seat, white knuckle reading. From the moment the medical camp came under fire to the moment they were rushed to the evacuation chopper, Maya and Jackson went through hell.

I’m always amazed at how twisted Cross can be when it comes to her books. She is one of the few romantic suspense authors who can write entire scenes from the point of view of the villain, and be so realistic. I believe wholeheartedly that her bad guys believe they are fighting a just war, no matter how ridiculous it sounds to the rest of us. She does an incredible job getting in the heads of psychopaths, and bringing them to live. One moment during their captivity, wheh Maya and Jackson are forced to “play a game, was so intense and twisted and creepy. It was incredible to read.

One of the aspects of the romance that I really liked in this was that because so much of the trust and foundation of Maya and Jackson’s relationship took place while they were held captive, they took the time at the end of the book to part ways and process. So many times in romantic suspense books we see the hero and heroine go through unimaginable things, and then start their HEA right away. I have a hard time believing that, and was so glad to see Cross have Maya and Jackson take a step back. They went to therapy, they talked through their experiences, and they did it on their own. Sure they talked on the phone, but they also stepped back from each other’s lives and took the time to unwind. It made me believe in their romance so much more.

We didn’t get the chance to really see a lot of supporting characters in this book, because most of the book took place during their captivity. However, we did get to meet the Secretary of State, a wonderful character who I would love to see more of. I did want to see more of the group of girlfriends though. I liked that these books focused a lot of the friendship between the heroines, and we didn’t get the chance to see that with this book.

All in all I thought this was Kaylea Cross best book to date. She really went above and beyond with the plot, taking on the horrific challenge of showing the right amount of torture and prisoner abuse, all while keeping the story readable and enjoyable. I loved the romance between Maya and Jackson, and how quick they were to rely and draw strength from one another. I can’t wait for Cross next release!

4.75 stars I wanted more romance!!!

Maya had a rough childhood that shaped her into the woman she is now. She gives as good as she gets and keeps her distance. She doesn't form attachments to men and prefers to love them and leave them when they get too close. So when she finds herself intrigued by the charming and handsome Jackson, she doesn't know what to do. Ignoring him is not working, nor is giving into her urges while staying detached.

Jackson is a nice guy. His friends call him the 'woman whisperer' but not even he can understand what's behind the lovely Maya. Not so easily deterred, Jackson pulls out all the stops to charm his way into her heart.

However, instead of the romance beginning, their nightmare ensues.

I have read the previous books in the series and although each of them had some sort of horrible thing happen to the main characters, none touched me as deeply as this one.

Forget about romance and insta-love. Although Jackson and Maya's connection started developing before they were captured, that connection grew even more powerful upon the mutual trust they found during their ordeal. They kept each other safe and sane. They were each other's rock and it only got stronger as the story progressed from the main conflict to the romance.
"Just let me love you."

Jackson and Maya went into this story as potential lovers and came out as partners. Their admiration for one another was palpable through the page, but what made their connection truly special was the way they relied on each other and made themselves completely vulnerable for the other.
"Just turn around and give yourself to me," he murmured against the top of her shoulder. "That's all you need to do."

I loved Jackson from the moment he appeared on the page and was curious to read his story. I am so glad that Kaylea Cross didn't disappoint. From the singing, to the loving all the way through the capture, the rescue and their coming together in the end, I loved it all. By far, my favorite book in the series.

Once again, Kaylea Cross managed to the page a suspenseful, emotionally driven story about surviving and starting anew.

I received this title through NetGalley in exchange of my honest opinion.
