The streets of his small town were always a refuge for Russ Becker, a place to escape the weight of the world and the insomnia that plagued him. But one night, everything changed. A strange astronomical event in the sky gifted him with extraordinary powers, and he wasn't the only one. Mallory, with her sharp mind and captivating beauty, now controlled minds. Jameson, arrogant as ever, could move objects with his thoughts. And Nadia, always enigmatic, struggled with her newly awakened empathic abilities.

But what was once a source of wonder soon becomes a dangerous liability as a ruthless organization hunts them down, determined to exploit their powers for their own gain. As the enemy closes in and threatens Russ's family, he and his newfound friends must band together and fight back, forever altering their destinies and the lives of those they love.

For fans of action-packed sci-fi novels with a touch of romance, this book is a must-read. If you enjoyed "X-Men," you'll love this thrilling tale of ordinary people with extraordinary abilities.

3.5 stars.
This was another one of those that I grabbed as a freebie on Amazon.
Sign up for email alerts, people!

Every thing about this felt like one of those b-list tv shows I loved when I was younger.
There was a time...many moons ago...when not every single show on television had a paranormal/sci-fi twist. In fact, very few had that flavor.
Unless you watched the stuff from some of the lower budget channels.
Which, of course, I did.
And since options were limited, you just sucked it up and took what you could get. That may sound bad, but the truth is, I loved those shows!
And I'm having a brain fart, so I can't think of the names of any of them right now...

Anyway, this book reminded me of watching a fun (albeit low-budget) show. There's nothing spectacular here, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Kids develop powers from some kind of mysterious Lights in the Sky, a bad agency is after them, family secrets are revealed, and another shadow agency emerges to (possibly?) help them. Also, a sprinkle of romance is thrown in for good measure.

So, yeah. This probably won't rock your socks, but I enjoyed it!

Really enjoyed this solid start to a four book series.

Russ is our narrator and one of four teenagers who develop special powers after witnessing a celestial event one night. Not dissimilar to the Seventh, which I also liked a lot. Nice group of characters, nice storyline and a fun read.

I will go on to the next book in the series.

3.75 insomniac stars

Edgewood

Russel is your average teenager, attends school and has a 3.6GPA. He also has friends and family. But he has a secret. He suffers from insomnia, and cannot sleep until he has a midnight walk. Then one time, he sees something. It's calling to him. So he investigates...

Russ sees something miraculous. But it leaves side effects, and he isn't the only one who knows about it. Three other teenagers have also experienced it, hopefully they will have all the answers, but maybe they don't know enough to save themselves...

Well written but the first half is boring because he and would give it around 3.5 stars for that part. However, it improved in the second half when the pace sped up, like when If the whole book was like that, it would have probably been 4.25-4.75 stars.

The subject of the book is really interesting, where and there is a little bit of romance, and allows you to comfortably discover the supernatural, without being too full on, and completely redonculous.
Jameson gave me a steely-eyed look over his glasses. “We’re geniuses with superpowers.

It felt a smidge juvenile, as he is 15.5 in the book. Hopefully when he gets older, he'll be a bit more mature *fingers crossed*

I received a copy of Edgewood in exchange for an honest review

I probably did this no favours by starting reading it in very small installments, as this didn't encourage being grabbed by the plot, and did encourage being bounced out by the less than smooth prose and typos. The story itself was fine, but there were just too many clunky lines to feel it was adequately finished. Just a few examples that are fairly typical. The protag, Russ, has taken his nephew to a comic bookshop, and is describing what it's like, including two "teenage girls" swaying to the music. "Girls often came into the store, hoping to catch the eyes of the guys, but it rarely worked. [major jerk points for assuming that girls ONLY go in comic stores TO SNAG SOME MAN-ACTION] Generally speaking, comic book aficionados are serious customers and a little on the shy side. Not a good combination for picking up chicks. [all the other jerk points]" Another time he's talking with a girl he likes and she changes the subject, which he says is something girls often do, backing up this scientific observation with the statement that his mother does it when talking to his dad. And, of course, of &*%$*^* course, we have a bit of obligatory fat-bashing, when he has to take a bus somewhere and a fat woman sits down beside him, with all the ensuing commentary that adds SO. MUCH. to the story.

I'm a bit torn about whether to read the next, though I probably will end up sticking it on the to-read shelf. It's not as if that's got years' worth of books on it already or anything, right?

I'm sorry Salon, but my old self really enjoys YA, especially when it's as fun as this series.

Young teens become superheroes? I'm right on board, especially when I find the characters as interesting as first person narrator Russ Becker, who thinks he's an ordinary guy with aging parents, a wild and flaky older sister, and a rambunctious nephew. Scarred Nadia, whose parents keep her locked up tight. Beautiful Mallory Naseef, and problematical Jameson.

Russ walks through what he thinks is an odd meteor phenomenon, and then the strange things begin happening, not only to him, but there are surprises to be discovered in the people he thought he knew so well.

Well told, with interesting characterizations; the powers are cool, but some of the best moments are very human exchanges between characters.

I wish it was better copyedited, though.

Four teenagers witness a mysterious spiral made
Up of light shards that fall from the sky and, after, realize they are developing super powers. We follow Russ Becker as he navigates family, friends, and his new abilities all while a threat - The Associates - loom around the four.

I didn’t think I would enjoy this but it was pretty good! I’ll definitely be reading the next book!

Talk about a good sci-fi book. I enjoyed reading this tale. It has great characters, story line, plot, and flow of the book. This book has character with super natural powers, shadow agency's, conspiracy, and technology. A must read for any and all book lovers everywhere.

I'm gonna go with a 3.5 on this.

First off, I won this as a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ first readers giveaway! (Woot Woot!!) I just to throw that out there. If I hadn't won this book, I definitely would have bought it anyway. Karen McQuestion delivered a compelling novel with a lot of promise.

Edgewood is the first in the series. Russ Becker, the 15yo narrator tells you the quests and phenomenons that happen in his life. Russ can't sleep. He's found only one solution to helping him get at least a little sleep, and it wasn't that shrink his parents sent him to... either. Russ started walking, what he didn't realize at first, is that he would walk the same route... every time. Until one night when he see's the most beautiful sight in the sky. Compelled to see what it was, and where it was. The light show had drawn Russ in, and he marveled in it. Little did Russ know, He wasn't the only one who has seen these lights. Mallory, a student who goes to his school, also so the lights... last year. Mallory invites him to a secret superpower group, which has 2 other members... Nadia and Justin. The 4 teenagers are put in several different situations in which they must use their special powers.

I liked this novel for several reasons. Karen wrote an amazing 1st person narrative through Russ. I mean, EVERYTHING he said sounded as if a 15yo boy was really saying it, context and all. I devoured this book quite quickly, as I was drawn in... not knowing what was coming next. I was fully immersed into Russ Beckers life. I had sneaking suspicions about Carly (Russ' sister) the entire book. However I can't reveal why. Nor did the author! I'm still suspecting though... Karen you're killing me here! I don't want to wait to find out if i'm right or wrong. In either case, this was a great book. I can't wait for the next in the series, and I hope Russ continues on his journey to greatness!

It is official Karen McQuestion has earned herself a spot in my Favorite Authors List. I always knew that Karen was quite talented, but had not read her books until recently. I dove into The Long Way Home shortly after it was released and I fell in love. Karen writes so beautifully; great characters, great setting, great dialogue...the whole package. So I was thinking, authors can't hit it out of of the park all the time can they?

Well yes. I then read Easily Amused and also really enjoyed that as well. I was thinking this Karen can really write. So when I saw that she stepping away from her woman's lit type of stuff and wrote a YA paranormal novel I thought "I need to read this". I was so blown away by Karen's ability to get me engrossed in yet another great novel.

Edgewood takes place in small town Wisconsin, in a town named Edgewood. Russ Becker witnesses an event that subsequently changes the path of his life. Edgewood has an amazing cast of characters, a story that is original, engrossing, funny, interesting and fun to read. It has danger, a bit of mystery and twists and turns that keep you burning thorough the book. I am so beyond excited that this is a series. Paranormal books are such a great escape from the day to day grind and who knows, maybe we all have secret magical abilities that we have yet to discover.....

I was looking for something light and fun to read and that’s exactly what I got with Edgewood. It follows the story of Russ Becker, a 15 year old that cures his insomnia with midnight strolls through his hometown. On one late night walk he stumbles across a strange astronomical event that seems to give him super powers! And he’s not the only one; other kids in his little town are affected. Mcquestion’s writing style is on the simple side which makes sense considering her intended audience. She does an excellent job of portraying the world through a teenager’s eyes. She reminded me what it’s like to be a 15 year old boy which is something that I wasn’t expecting when I picked up this book. She does have an annoying habit of repeating herself to the extreme. Although this is a young adult novel, I don’t think the kids reading it need to be reminded of the same thing four or in some cases five times. This is why I chose to give it three stars instead of four. As this is the first book in a series it was heavy on introductions, so I’ll be excited to read future installments with hopes that they will move a little faster.

TITLE: "Edgewood"
AUTHOR: Karen McQuestion
PUBLISHER: Self-Published
RATING: 5
AGE: 14+

REVIEW: I don't know exactly what it is, but lately I have really been getting into the fantasy, science fiction, young adult novels and finding them extremely entertaining. I would have to say that in comparison, "Edgewood" strikes me as a cross between " I Am Number Four" and "Hunger Games."

The main story focuses on "Russ Becker" as he suffers from bouts of insomnia that lead him on late night walks around his community; one night in particular finds him witnessing a phenomenon that only happens every 100 years and will change his ordinary life forever.

The characters shine in this novel and are not only believable but masterfully written. Karen McQuestion is an amazing author, one who's creations I intend to continue to read.

I am a senior citizen, but I really enjoyed this book which grabbed me from the get-go, and thoroughly kept my interest.

I especially liked that it didn't have all the violence that was in the Divergent series, which was an element that bothered me about a series involving teens, and why I refuse to read the Hunger Games series[adults forcing kids to fight to the death, no thanks!].

I am really emotionally invested in these kids and can't wait to read the next two books in the series~ Wanderlust and Absolution.

This is the kind of urban fantasy I like, no werewolves, vampires, or zombies!

Mindblowingly Great

This is a book for all ages, 8 and up! Creative, fast-paced, perfectly developed characters that readers will love. The story itself is one you don’t want to put down and don’t want to end. I am so glad there are now 5 more to read! Highly recommend. I have so far not read a book written by Ms McQuestion that I haven’t put at the top of my favorites list. This will be added. Clean but suspenseful and exciting. Written for much younger than me but I don’t think there is an age that wouldn’t love this book! As always, she doesn’t disappoint in any way. Loved this!

4·5/5 stars Buy a book and immediately read it? Not unheard of from me, but still pretty rare. I found this one, and was intrigued enough to read, AND not be able to put down this book almost immediately. It’s young adult, but that didn’t take anything away from my enjoyment of this read.

Russ is a fifteen year old that has a bad case of insomnia, so he has taken to the streets of his town(Edgewood)to walk late at night-unbeknownst to his parents. He’s gotten used to all the little quirks of the people whose homes are lit up late at night, and has a usual course we walks each time. One night changes everything for Russ and life for him will never be the same. Sounds pretty dramatic? Actually it really was. After witnessing a strange phenomenon, he begins to acquire some pretty amazing super powers. And then he meets more teenagers just like him.

I think this is the first young adult book(at least that I can remember)that features a teenage boy, that I have read. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it, but came away pleasantly surprised. Russ is smart, funny, and in lots of ways typical of a boy his age. His interests range from girls to playing games, and then back to girls again. That is until the night that changed his life. Mallory is a fellow classmate and when she sees that he is drawing pictures of what he saw that night, she befriends him, and takes him to meet her friends. Nadia is an almost introverted character due to being horribly scarred on her face, and Jamison thinks because he is a genius that he is better than everyone else. But the three have the same thing in common; they had all been insomniacs the previous year, and had seen the same thing that Russ just experienced. And they all have powers as well. Russ learns all the things that the others have learned-mainly that there is an organization that is trying to recruit any and all teenagers that have experienced the phenomenon. That they will stop at nothing(even murder)to make this happen is a big plot point for this book.

The author’s characterization of teenage boys was fun. Russ would be doing something really serious, only to have things about girls or a particular girl go through his head. Or he would say things that firmly put him into the teenage camp, and then turn around and act very mature. Kind of teetering between a child and adult. Jamison stayed pretty immature throughout the read.

The premise, the characters, the writing, and super fast pacing, kept me turning pages, and it ended up being a less than one day read. I thought about giving it five stars, but had to take away half a star due to the mystery of the phenomenon not being explained in this book. That was disappointing for me. I have already read Wonderlust, the second book in this series, and I enjoyed that one as well. I would recommend this to all young adult/adult science fiction fans or even someone that just wants to read something really different.(RabidReads.com)

Russ has been suffering with insomnia for a while now and the only thing that seems to help is a late night walk. During one of these walks, he witnesses a strange phenomena, lights spiraling down from the sky. Initially he thinks, meteor shower but when he hears nothing about it the next day, he's a little confused. Why wouldn't anyone else have seen or heard it?? Next thing he knows, he's contacted by a girl in his school and what he finds out changes his life forever.

This is a solid start to what seems to be a fun and energetic series. Karen McQuestion did great job setting the scene and introducing her fantastic characters.

Plot wise, it took a while to get going, but once it did, it was entertaining and fairly fast paced. The idea of the powers happening to the kids and what happens next was intriguing! We are left with a lot of unanswered questions though, which I hope will get answered in future books, like, what exactly are those lights? what do the Associates want? why do only some of them get powers?

Character wise, I liked Russ, he is a typical teen, though I did find it hard to believe that he was such a good teen!! My 2 teens aren't bad, but they aren't as good as him!! Lol. His crush on one of the characters was adorable too, though I did love seeing his friendship blossom with the other character more. Let's hope it's going in the direction I think it's going!!

Anyway, this was an enjoyable listen and I definitely look forward to more in this series. It captured my attention and I'm interested to see what happens with the characters!

Maxwell Glick made for effortless listening!! He did a great job with the characterisations and gave each character their own voice. I had no trouble following who was talking and enjoyed his narration.

*I received a copy of this for review, this in no way affected my thoughts.*

The author sent me a copy of this book with a request for a review. I've been a fan of her work for a while now, first reading some women's fiction which was so amazingly well done that I still gush to folks about how good it was. Later on, she sent me a children's book and I was dubious that an author could pull off such a drastic change of genre, but she excelled.

When I got this book and realized it was not only young-adult, but a foray into a little bit of science fiction, I thought for sure that I would finally be able to say that I did not like a Karen McQuestion book. Especially because I really disliked the cover art. It was with a semi-smug smile that I opened my kindle and started to read.

About 10 minutes in, I knew it... Dagnabit.

This book was nothing short of awesome. It's rare that an author is able to cross so many genres and do it so well. This is such a beautifully executed young adult novel that I am blown away. The story is pretty clever. Think Men In Black meet Teen Titans. I won't rehash the entire plot here, but she takes a simple storyline and delves into the characters and their lives with such love and caring that I really found myself pulling for them.

I will admit that I usually am not a huge fan of series because closure issues, but she does a good job of closing up one storyline while leaving us open for another. I also like that the next book appears to be written from the point of view of one of the other teens. I can't wait to see where she takes us on this next journey. As a 36 year old woman, I'm looking forward to this young adult series (write faster, Ms. Author, write faster!)

Recommended for just about everyone. If you don't enjoy it, you're simply crazy. ;)

Edgewood has got to be one of the best books I have read this year! Karen McQuestion is so talented! She has developed characters that are so real to life, and the way they interact with one another is true to life as well.

I don't like to synopsize books in my reviews, so if you are looking for that, read the book description provided by the author. It's much better than anything I could write. I will just say that Edgewood is sort of a cross between sci-fi and paranormal and is extremely engrossing. Don't make the same mistake I did, and start reading Edgewood at bedtime. Before I knew it, the sun was rising! (It is a very good thing that I don't work).

I hate to use the term "page turner", but that is exactly what Edgewood is, a page turner. I couldn't put it down, and I am pretty sure that neither will anyone else!

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that I won a copy of this book here on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. I never win anything, so I encourage everyone to enter the giveaways!

Edgewood is for all ages. I am 55 years old and can't put it down. Karen makes the characters really come to life. Also I love that not everything is as it seems. Always an unexpected turn of events. I especially enjoy science fiction that is rooted in reality. It could happen. I also enjoyed reading a current account of teenage life and it brought back happy memories of my son when he was that age. I also enjoy Karen's simple, direct writing style. Another great book!

Thank you Ms. McQuestion for a Great Read

Great story, if I had ten hands I would give this story ten thumbs up. Great story line and characters the details are great, you would think that someone or a group were telling a true story of their experience. I started reading Friday evening and didn't want to put it down to go to bed. I finished the son Sunday about and am ready for book two.

The first book in a series, Edgewood was well-written and really sucked me in. I had trouble putting it down, wanting to read “just one more chapter. I’ve already bought the next book in the series and can’t wait to start it! I recommend Edgewood to teens and adults who like sci-fi (and, really, even those who don’t sci-fi is not usually a genre I enjoy, but occasionally I do and this is definitely one of those times).

This was a fun take on the teens-get-superpowers type of storyline. To me, it didn’t feel quite true or plausible around the scene where Russ went over to his teacher’s house, but the rest was better and the narration often humorous. Good scenes at the climax with the Associates. I liked the characters of Russ and Nadia, and I liked how the relationships between Russ and his sister and nephew developed. The ending leads into the next book, but didn’t feel overly unfinished.

This book is about a group of teens that end up gaining different super powers such as mind reading and telekinesis after they witnessed an astronomical event. The four kids become friends and get into some tricky situations with a secret organization looking to exploit their powers. The author reveals each teens personality and how they interact with others through flashbacks and dialogue. This is the first book in a series, but is interesting throughout. Id recommend it to anyone looking for a light read and likes science fiction.

This book is just TOO GOOD! I've been wanting to give it 5 stars since 1/4 of the way through already, cause I knew it would be amazing. But I withheld my rating, as I didn't wanna jinx myself. I was hoping it would stay just as good, and it just kept on getting better. So 2/3 of the way through, I hit the 5 stars button. The verdict was really that simple!

I love urban paranormal fantasy. Highschool kids with special abilities, hiding in secret, while being stalked by the government / secret societies who wanted them for their power, what's not to love about this!?

It did start a little slow for the first couple dozen pages, and I did wonder where it was going. Russ was a kid who had sleeping disorders. He often takes late night walks, only to stumble upon some meteor shower. There, he becomes exposed to radiation and somehow becomes a superhuman. He didn't know about his powers at first, but there had been other kids who had also been exposed to it and are trying to seek him out and get him to join their group.

Mallory is awesome, but I'm still trying to figure her out. It's every guys dream to be approached by a pretty girl and then she asks Russ to join her secret group. When he was sick in bed one day, it was so sweet of her to crash into his house to check up on him. He woke up to her and everything. It's so easy to fall for a girl like that. But for most of the book, Russ had been trying to get with her, without much luck. I really wanted it to happen and I felt his frustration! Every time she plans something with him, there's always another member of the group tagging along, or something else happens and their supposed date is cut short. Just wish something would happen.

I love Russ' relationship with Nadia too. At first, she seemed really mysterious and we didn't know much about her. But after that encounter in the public when she was with her mother, they didn't really speak, however they shared some level of understanding and trust at that moment.

The thing about the Associates and how they control every sector in society, another book hinting the truth about the Illuminati. LOL. This stuff is very real and it's interesting how a lotta authors are putting it out there through their fictional works.

I simply love this series. I'm so glad I purchased it. I have no idea why it isn't popular or anything. Karen McQuestion deserves big time recognition! The theme, the story, the characters, just everything, they resonate with me so deeply. I just can't wait to get started on the 2nd book asap. And why are there only 3 books in the series? I don't want this story to end!

SPOILERS AHEAD!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!

More about Nadia. So she figured out she could astral project!? That was freaking awesome. She had been locked indoors by her controlling mother for so long, and hadn't seen the group for weeks, but she had been astral projecting to visit everybody regularly. Turns out Russ was the other person who she connected with intimately during her astral travels though. It was just sweet of Nadia to keep watch on Russ all the time. And she would often come into his room at night to chat with him. Who wouldn't want a special friend like that? :) Nadia was seriously growing on me, and I think Russ could end up with her. I don't know which girl I'm rooting for at this point. When they finally saw each other in person again, Russ and Nadia hugged. It was really cute!

So Russ initially had healing abilities, then he discovered he control manipulate electricity. Later he realised he could also do mind control, like Mallory could! It turns out he was the strongest, most powerful one of the group. The Associates gave him an incredible offer, that I admit, even I would struggle to reject! I wonder what's gonna happen in the next book.

I also wonder what secrets his sister, Carly, has been hiding. She knows too much and she probably did have powers in the past. We don't know that yet. And about Russ being a 2nd gen? Their parents might have had powers in the past too, or perhaps grandparents. Still so many mysteries.
