I feel like I just spent the past two hours reading a mermaid-related version of Real Housewives of Orange County. So much bitchiness. So much bickering. So much name-calling. So little combined intelligence in one single book. Apparently, daughters of men and daughters of Greek gods have one thing in common: idiocy.
Putting aside the unrealistic premise of mermaids this book, the whole story and the characters' actions are pretty lacking in credibility. I'm not talking about the fact that mermaids do not exist in real life. Come on, it's not like anyone reads YA paranormal and fantasy expecting realism and actually believing that there are actually really well-hidden unicorns in our world. The credibility factor to which I'm referring does not refer to the fact that the book's premise relies on the fact that the reader suspends his or her disbelief and believe in the existence of paranormal creatures, but that the plot twists are entirely too easily solved, the characters' actions are irrational beyond the limits of common sense, and the behavior of the ancient siren sisters are so fraught with back-stabbing and fighting that the reader doubts that they can exist together for a week without shedding blood, much less thousands of years.
This is the third book in the Watersong trilogy. So far, Gemma has been turned into a siren, resisted being a siren, and now is trying to break the curse of being a siren, despite the fact that she might kill herself and her siren "sisters" while she's at it. The plot is simple, the characters forgettable, the writing is elementary, the pacing and resolution of the mystery is incredible and unrealistic.
The main focus of this trilogy has so far been the plot, and not the characters, and the book does poorly on both fronts. In a good book, the mystery unwinds gradually, the writing should slowly unveil subtle hints that the reader can follow and be involved in the eventual resolution, the clues should not (since we're continuing with a nautical theme here) a) land like a big fat fish in the reader's lap or b) make the reader feel like they're getting slapped in the head with a swordfish. There is zero subtlety here in the revealing and eventual solving of the big mystery, things just fall into place too easily for it to be a compelling mystery.
Example: Gemma needs a clue, how do I stop being a siren? Oh, I'll ask my sister's coworker. Sister's coworkers shocking knows someone who is willing to believe in mythological creatures and fairies and sirens, and also shockingly happens to own an esoteric book shop and knows all about breaking the curse!!!!!!!!!
"...the point is, I was talking to this old friend of mine. I'd completely lost touch with her, but it turns out she owns a bookstore up in Sundham. She'd definitely have some books that might help you out with the sirens. Plus, she's pretty knowledgeable on all that kind of stuff."
Weeeeeeell, isn't that just terribly convenient. I probably know someone who knows someone who knows about the esoteric and ancient myth surrounding sirens, too, if I bothered to ask around, I'm sure.
Random flashbacks attempt to give insight into the siren's characters and previous lives fail to add anything to the harebrained plot. The only serve to further instill in the reader the fact that it is utterly incredible that these sisters have existed and lived together for all this time, hating and fighting among each other so much that it took this long for one of them to attempt to kill the other. I am not kidding about the fighting.
"Lexi!" Penn growled. "You are annoying! I'm gonna pull this car over if you don't shut the hell up!"
"No! I will not shut up!" Lexi shouted at her. "You are annoying me...you're being a total---"
...and
"You stupid wench!" Penn shouted, and Lexi cringed. "Thea's right! You are the biggest mistake I have ever made! You are so dumb and useless!"
...and on, and on, and on. You think I was kidding about the fighting and the reference to the Real Housewives franchise? There is so much bitchiness and cattiness among the sirens that I imagine living with four siren sisters is like living in a sorority house, with more backstabbing and poorly-concealed vitriol, and a whole lot more hair-pulling, and by hair pulling, I mean hair pulling.
"She climbed on top of her, grabbing Lexi’s silky hair to keep her from pulling away, and she hit her in the face over and over again. Lexi squealed and clawed at Penn's hand, but she never really fought back."
Sigh.
As bitchy as they are, the sirens have more personality than the two other main characters, Gemma and Harper. The entire series is supposed to be about them, and we see their point of view more than that of any other characters, but the personality is just not there. It's Gemma does this. Harper does that. They are very, very dull characters. For a siren, Gemma is severely lacking in charm and confidence. She is quiet, reticent, and in complete denial of her new nature. I am so sick of characters who just completely fight what they are. Get used to it, make the best of the situation, if you must kill, then take your siren sisters' advice and feed upon the douchebags of the world. There are plenty of those to go around.
Gemma is also a severe hypocrite. She doesn't want to hurt anyone, she is in denial of her true nature, but she uses her siren song anyway, multiple times, with disastrous consequences. Take her actions with Alex after she made him hate her in the previous book:
"It doesn't matter what you meant!" he shouted, and she flinched. "Did you ask me if I wanted this? Did you even talk with me about this before you did it?"
"No, I knew what you would say."
He scoffed. "You knew what I would say, and you did it anyway?"
Yes, give someone no choice when changing their entire essence of character. Their entire being. Does that sound familiar to what happened to you, Gemma?
And Harper, her sister, the 18-year old going on 40. As her own boyfriend says, "You act like her mom." She is a martyr to the nth degree. She has to do everything. She is fucking Atlas with the world on her shoulders. She has a dad, but certainly the man who's been single-handedly responsible for raising the two of them can't possibly handle things without her help. Neither can Gemma. Harper has no personality and seems incapable of anything but worry. She worries about her dad, she worries about her friend's ability to manage the shop, she worries about Daniel, she worries about Gemma. Never mind that Daniel can get by and has done so on his own for years, never mind that Gemma is a freaking sea monster who can kill at the blink of an eye. Nooooooo...Harper needs to be there for her helpless siren of a sister. Right. She is so utterly blind to what Gemma is capable of, too. "She didn’t think Gemma had hurt anybody. Gemma would do whatever she needed to do to survive, but not at the expense of somebody else." Yes, because sirens just sing happy songs and sit on rocks looking pretty, never hurting or eating people or anything. Harper is such a sainted soul that it hurts.
This is a terrible book, and the only positive thing I can say about it is that it approaches the end of a poor series, which I kept reading due to my masochistic tendencies.

I can't say I remotely enjoyed the third book in this series. As forgettable as the first two books were, I at least did enjoy reading them. This one was just plain annoying. It even made me dislike a character I perviously liked, Daniel. Now I can safely say there's only one character in this whole damn series I like, and thet's Gemma's older sister Harper. God, this book was so fucking annoying it made me skim large chunks of the last half.

And now that I think of it, it does make a lot of sense for Daniel to be a siren. Or something related to a siren...

Wow. I don't even know what to say. Tidal was very interesting. I mean, yeah, I was pretty pissed at some parts, but it was freaking awesome! It ended way too quickly for my liking though, and there just wasn't enough Harper for me. Harper is my favorite out of the Fisher sisters and I really enjoyed her points of views. I kinda died during Gemma's points of views.
;) It's kind of weird that I had such high expectations and waited so long for Tidal and it wasn't even that astonishing.
Like I was saying though: great book! A bit too short, but whatever. And it was almost as if Amanda Hocking rushed the ending.
I'm really excited for Elegy, the fourth and final book! I really wasn't expecting for the series to end so quickly and I certainly wasn't expecting for Elegy to come out in the summer of 2013, but I guess that's kudos for us Watersong fans!
4.5 stars.

ZERO STARS
Warning: Contains major spoilers. Read at your own risk, not because of the spoilers, because the stupidity depicted in this book can make your eyes bleed.
I don't know why I keep reading this series.
The writing is dull and plain.
The characters are forgettable and boring as hell.
The main character annoyed the hell out of me from the very start.
The story was too damn cliche. The events, the plot and basically everything worked out according to the favor of the main characters and the worst part is that they didn't even work hard enough for it and they sure as hell did not deserve it.
Take, for example, the scroll. Gemma barely makes an effort to find it. I mean, finding the scroll could be the only freaking way to save her meaningless life and what does she do? She breaks into the siren's house a few times to find it even though its pretty obvious that its not there.
When she realizes how stupid her plan was she's all like "Oh, I've done everything that I can. Now, I'll sit here and wait for someone pitiful enough of my condition to save my ass."
At the end of the book, the scroll is handed over to her. Just like that. I will admit that I saw that one coming. When I realized how stupid Gemma was being about the scroll, I knew that she wouldn't be smart enough to actually figure out where it was without any help. I knew that Thea, in a moment of weakness, would give it to her and that's exactly what happened.
How effing predictable.
Don't even get me started on the Daniel Penn sex thing. He was literally the only likeable character in the entire series and Amanda Hocking totally ruined it for me.
One should learn how to ruin a book and still be a bestseller from Amanda Hocking. Everything about the book is so fucking cliche. That is what makes it so damn boring.
The other thing that annoyed me is the how Hocking has a convenient solutions to every problem. It's like she doesn't even think or even try to make the book any interesting or mysterious for the readers.
Need information about sirens? Visit the bookstore that is conveniently an hour's drive from the MC's place.
Need to find the scroll? Don't worry, Thea will conveniently deliver it to your place. You don't even have to break a sweat.
Need to create drama for the next book? Penn will threaten Daniel to sleep with her and Daniel will agree without a second's thought because it will keep his precious girlfriend "safe" even though he's basically agreeing to cheat on her. How fucking convenient for the author. She won't even have to find a reason to create a fight between Daniel and Harper because after Harper finds out what he's done, they will definitely have a fight.
I swear I am done with this series. I wanted to read about the sirens, the mysterious and toxic women who lured men to their deaths, but Hocking is doing a horrible job depicting them. She portrays the sirens as these immature, bitchy and trashy females. It's impossible to believe that they've lived for more than a thousands of year when they are so immature and dysfunctional with each other.
Screw this series. Screw the last book. I don't care if I'll never know how the book ends. I just don't care anymore. For all I know, Gemma, Harper or even Daniel can all die and I still won't give a damn. There is only so much stupidity that I can take and after reading this book, I've been hit with the highest dose of stupid.

I think my biggest dislike about this series is that nothing happens for the first 75% of the book, and then there's a big fight, and somehow everything works out ok-ish at the end (or as ok as it can for a multi-book series). I will be SHOCKED if Gemma, Harper, Alex, and Daniel don't survive the end of the book. And I wouldn't be surprised if the following things happen either: a) Nathalie is somehow cured and comes home; b) Bernie's wife was a muse and is somehow the key to ending this curse; c) Penn and Thea don't die when the curse is broken, but get to live a mortal life, actually like it, and become Gemma's closest friends; d) Obviously, Gemma and Alex wind up together, as do Daniel and Harper... basically, everything gets wrapped up in a tidy little bow. That's what I think will happen.

Remember Percy Jackson and the lightning thief, or something like that, it was a good story but I can't remember quite fine the name right now , XD...anyway this one is a bit like that 'cause we also go against time with the characters in order to save Emma and her loved ones.
It's a hell of a great journey, a bit ridiculous with the introduction of the greek mythology but pretty good, nevertheless.

Right after reading Lullaby,I immediately picked up this book and WOW Nelly! Did it blow me away?
Remember in my Lullaby review I said things looked like they will get worse or put to the test? Yup. Ms. Hocking took this up several levels leaving the reader absolutely astonished. I think when I was done with the book I just could not believe that in the short time that I read it, it all changed so quickly. Some characters were killed off, others were added, deadly betrayals of deals were made and not to mention all the going behind other peoples backs. It was all so good, I could not stop myself from reading no matter what. Take it from me when I say this book is filled with an amazing plot that will leave you breathless.
Relationships. GAH! All the relationships went to crap on a silver platter. I just kept shaking my head at all the choices these characters were making and AHHHHH! In just want to scream. Not that it isn’t any good because my goodness it is! It’s just one of those books that you get so caught up on all the emotions and choices of the characters that it feels real to you. As I read this book, all I could think of is, How will it all end? I mean, if it is falling this way, I can only imagine that the last book will be a doozy!
This is an awesome book! With amazing clarity in emotions, world building and characters, I’m excited to see where it will go next. This book gave me so much anxiety, I had to chill for a bit. Sending a wave of vengeance and lots of plot twist, Tidal is superb.

I think when I was done with the book I just could not believe that in the short time that I read it, it all changed so quickly. Some characters were killed off, others were added, deadly betrayals of deals were made and not to mention all the going behind other peoples backs. It was all so good, I could not stop myself from reading no matter what. Take it from me when I say this book is filled with an amazing plot that will leave you breathless.
Relationships. GAH! All the relationships went to crap on a silver platter. I just kept shaking my head at all the choices these characters were making and AHHHHH! In just want to scream. Not that it isn’t any good because my goodness it is! It’s just one of those books that you get so caught up on all the emotions and choices of the characters that it feels real to you. As I read this book, all I could think of is, How will it all end? I mean, if it is falling this way, I can only imagine that the last book will be a doozy!
This is an awesome book! With amazing clarity in emotions, world building and characters, I’m excited to see where it will go next. This book gave me so much anxiety, I had to chill for a bit. Sending a wave of vengeance and lots of plot twist, Tidal is superb.

Honestly, that quote biggest best quote. That quote doesn't even just apply to Gemma's siren problems. Just every single thing that Gemma does has Harper's harsh stamp of disapproval. When Daniel called her out and was like you're not her mom, I was like fucking finally someone said it.
Weird place to start a review, I know. But Harper is just very problematic for me. She really drags the story down.
This book felt like major filler for most of though. Sure it was a nice read, but literally nothing happened until the last 20% of the book. I really like Gemma, I think she could be a really good character if it weren't for Harper. Gemma has no room to develop or make her own choices because of Harper. Even if Harper is physically saying no to her, she is like oh but Harper wouldn't approve of this! I also looove Daniel, but I am a little worried about his decisions through this book.
I love Amanda Hocking's writing. It flows so nice, and pages always fly by. The build up at the end of the book was very good, and I am actually really looking forwards to reading the next book.

Para empezar, la historia sigue el mismo curso que los dos anteriores pero especialmente el mismo esquema que Lullaby y como yo pensé que Lullaby habÃa sido un libro relleno, esperé que este libro se desenvolviera de otra forma... mis expectativas fueron tiradas al piso y pisoteadas bastante rápido.
El mundo que presenta Amanda Hocking no es de mi agrado simplemente porque no tiene un desarrollo profundo. Cuando explica como funcionan las sirenas y las reglas que deben de seguir es muy sintética y no demuestra mucho, osea, vemos la mayor parte del tiempo como éstas sirenas viven en su forma humana más de lo que las vemos en forma de sirenas o aves (otro aspecto que queda corto de explicación y desarrollo).
Creo que estos libros podrÃan incluir a cualquier otra criatura mitológica y serÃa lo mismo, sólo cambiarÃan las reglas con las que deben vivir pero no cambiarÃa mucho más, ya que la historia transcurre mientras las sirenas están en su forma humana y muchos de los otros personajes son humanos.

The only thing I remember from reading this book was Penn's weird obsession with Daniel and nothing else. The amount of drama surrounding whether or not he would actually sleep with Penn and "betray" Harper kept middle school me up all night. I lived for the drama then, but this book was definitely my least favorite out of the quartet.

Oh my god.. I am so relieved right now. I'm just so glad that this wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Oh god.. It was just heading in a really bad direction and something tells me that there is definitely more trauma on the way in the last book but at least that will be the end and honestly I can't wait for it!
So this book is filled with drama and surprisingly some very emotional moments. In the last book I wasn't really that connected to it, but this time I actually found myself crying at points. I also felt disgusted and enraged a lot more so really I don't know if I prefer this or being completely emotionless about it. As Gemma and the rest try to unveil the nature of the siren curse and try to get out of this whole situation, both main relationships just go to hell. I really don't know how else to explain this book without spoiling it but I felt like it dragged out a lot with the main plot because of all the crap going on with the characters. And I just didn't need that crap, I really didn't.

Why? Why must I go through all this drama and horriblness and just ugh. Can we please just finally get rid of Penn? And can everyone just stop making decisions for each other?? I get that you're trying to protect each other but oh my god some flipping communication really wouldn't hurt!
A couple of things I am happy about. So far that has been Thea's backstory and I did have a feeling that she fell in love and he didn't love her back for some reason. I also enjoyed the occasional cute line between Harper and Daniel and that time that her Dad walked in on them was also funny, especially by how he reacted to it afterwards. So I mean in the end I did enjoy parts of the book, enough to make me feel like I should read the last one, however by far not enough to make me give this any more than three stars. End of rant.

After being rescued by her sister, Harper and her boyfriend, Daniel, Gemma is back with her family. Unfortunately the sirens, Penn, Lexi, and Thea have followed Gemma back to her home town. They are in no hurry either to leave.
It seems that Penn has her eyes on Daniel. Also, she is on the look out for Gemma’s replacement. Once she finds her than Gemma is history. That is until Gemma and Harper can find a way to stop the girls without killing Gemma herself.
Tidal is the third book in the Watersong series. Amanda made me more excited about sirens with this series. However I have to say that I was a little disappointed by this book. I expected there to be more action and for Penn to be her annoying her. She was in a way still annoying but only about a third of the way. Other wise she was more subtle in this book. In fact all three of the sirens were pretty docile. Even Gemma did not act out as she is learning to embrace her siren side.
What I did like however was getting to know the sirens and their past better. Who they were before and in more detail how they became sirens. Still I enjoyed reading this book. I flew right through it, so it is a fast read. I hope that the next book, Elegy has lots more action that includes a big battle scene.

I have multiple questions. How are SIRENS who have lived since 24 B.C so fucking childish and whine non stop? How is it that some random babe that works in a bookshop just happens to have all the answers to ur questions?
Thinking back to the first book I actually liked the characters but I’m not sure what I liked because in this book no one has personalities, they are all just functional roles being filled.
No wonder I’m having such a hard time reading this � the authors writing style- I’m not captivated at all it’s drab and dull and honestly so hard to get through. The dialogue is so cringe, there is too much thinking out loud and some was so fucking immature and hard to read. I could honestly write a book better than this.
I mean the writinggggg😖😔😩 and don’t even get me started on chapter 26 & 27 or every chapter really, feeling quite rushed feeling quite messy feeling like a bit of a shit show ?? I mean we literally just went to whatever year in the past at some random chapter and I had to stop and think what? Like zero explanation we were randomly in the past.
There is so much more I could say but IM SO DONE I’ll prolly finish the last book tho cause I bought them all paper back :�)

This is the climax of the series (literally:)) it was so thrilling, as Gemma explores the darker world of her newfound powers (or curse, if you think about it)

Something about Amanda Hocking is just extremely disappointing. Even when she does things right, which she does in TIDAL, it's hard to let go of the mistakes and blandness.

I don't think I've encountered many series where both the second and the third book contain as little plot as in this series. And yet I can't stop reading and am already looking forward to the next book in the series. That's partly because of the writing style. The books are incredibly easy to read and there is a lot of dialogue.
That's also because the characters in this series are insanely realistic. Gemma can whine a lot about her situation, but she's in a way also willing to take action. It's not leading anywhere so far, apart from Alex being changed for the worst, but that can of course change in the last book in the series. And although she's mostly panicing, she does try to do what's best for the people around her.
Harper is also not really growing much and yet I can understand her doubts and worries and pain so well! She's the kind of person putting aside her own dreams to take care of others and I can't wait for the moment she will get to choose for herself what she wants her future to look like. But then she will have to learn that both her father and sister need to solve their own problems.
I also liked that in this book we got to see a little more of the sirens. Especially Thea is becoming more and more likable and I guess I'm even starting to understand Penn a little. I hope that in the last book we'll really get to see what it means to be alive for this long, forced to feed on humans. So, I'm ready for the finale. I hope to get to it soon!

These aren't great. They're a guilty pleasure, but I admit this one wasn't as much of a pleasure when it came to pressuring others into having sex. I think this one took a downward turn. From Penn trying to guilt Daniel into having sex with her, to Gemma getting pinned down by Aiden, to the turned upside down tale of Persephone and Hades, this just went dark and kind of weird. I'll continue on because I'm curious about how it all ends, but it went in a bad direction.

Malgré la page couverture un peu douteuse, j'ai quand même bien apprécié ce troisième tome.
Il y avait beaucoup plus d'action et moins de répétition que le 2e tome. La fin me donne même envie de commencer rapidement le prochain.

Protect your cuticles readers, because Amanda Hocking is raising the standard for supernatural suspense! Tidal, the third nail-biting installment to the Watersong series, is keeping the sirens in Capri and with Harper gearing up to leave for college, the race to free Gemma from the sirens is more dire than ever.
Oh, how much has changed since Lullaby. Gemma and Alex are no longer an inseparable item, but what really stuns me is the aftermath of Gemma's siren song taking effect on Alex. His change is more than emotional, but physical as well. He's a buff, brooding teen struggling with a break up he can't remember and a change of life plans. What's most intriguing, with a side of trepidation, is how the past comes into play for the sirens. Penn has this emerging obsession with Daniel that stems from an old love, Bastian, an immortal immune to their siren powers of seduction. This obsession not only provides a segue for readers to see a part of the sirens' past that otherwise probably would not have come up, but it shows a different side to Penn. Whether you'll like this slightly alternate side of her is up a difference of taste, but ultimately she's still the villainous, conniving siren she's proven to be since Wake.
Emotions are running high all around, from characters to audience. I had a hard time reading without tearing up, gasping in surprise, or feeling indignation on behalf of one character or another. The plot focuses on Gemma and Harpers's personal lives on a more intimate level and adds a more human layer to the sirens, all while introducing new information regarding whether Gemma can break free from the sirens, once and for all, before Penn decides to kill her. The carefully constructed subplots and the harmony with the series' main storyline is a strong indication that Amanda is further testing the range of her writing style and passing with flying colors!
After Tidal's heart-racing head-to-head, which is a huge improvement over the simple altercation at the close of Lullaby, I'm a little more than terrified at what the series conclusion will bring. The sirens will continue to be a threat to Gemma, Harper, Daniel and Alex, but it seems not only to their lives, but their relationships as well. Nevertheless, if you're new to the series, or just a bit behind, Tidal is an immediate must-read!

Things are starting to get kind of crazy. A lot of things happen, particularly at the end of the book.
I hate Penn. Like, really hate her. I did before, but now I hate her even more.
Harper and Gemma I still like. They're good, strong sisters, and they really care about each other. I honestly feel awful for Alex. I really hope the whole mess Gemma got him into gets straightened out. I was happy he confronted her and, by the end of the book, seemed determined to get through it and fix his life.
Daniel, Daniel, Daniel. I have really liked him throughout the series so far, but he made a STUPID agreement with Penn in order to keep Harper and Gemma safe, and I hope he finds a way out of it. It makes me so angry. STUPID man. I don't care what his intentions are. Also, I thought there would be more to the reason why he isn't affected by the sirens' songs--turns out I was wrong. Kind of anticlimactic.

I'm happy I took my time reading since so it isn't a tortuous wait for the final book in the series.
In this installment in the Watersong series, it is a race to the finish line as sister: Harper and Gemma try desperately to find a cure to the Siren Curse before Penn and Lexi find Gemma's replacement and kill her.
As usual we have Harper and Gemma's point of views as well as a few new additions which includes sexy Daniel, evil Penn and also flashbacks to the original four sirens from Thea's point of view.
These were great additions giving us insight into the sirens before entering the Fisher sisters lives, didn't necessarily compel me to sympathise with them but better understand them. Although Penn is definitely cray-cray, no doubt.
Which leads me to Daniel's point of view. He in my opinion is in the most dangerous position right now but still wants to protect everyone and tries to keep cool and calm. He is up there as one of my favourite all time male characters. Also I have learnt I would rather Penn hate me than want me in some way. I could feel my skin crawl with Daniel as he crossed paths with Penn.
There were times where the story seemed to drag but definitely had it's intense moments that made up for it and with a jaw dropping ending which I kind of saw coming but was still happy it happened.
