Chapter 29 Revisited

Rate this book
This is the true story of what happens when a typical American housewife has a divine encounter with the Lord and becomes a modern-day disciple. How does her husband react when he finds a gospel tract between the ham and cheese in his sandwich? Or her children when their mother starts answering the phone, "Praise the Lord" every time it rings?

Jean Coleman is suddenly transformed into a totally new person who views her neighborhood as an exciting mission field and a trip to the grocery store as an opportunity to share the love of Jesus. Even a mishap in the parking lot provides an open door that leads to an unexpected miracle.

You will laugh and you will probably shed a tear or two as you read how the Lord has used this very ordinary woman to do some very extraordinary things. Jean's transparent conversations with a patient and loving God are certain to touch your heart and her everyday experiences will inspire you to believe for miracles in your own life.

Wonderfully Refreshing, Honest And Inspirational Account Of A Woman's Journey Of Faith!

This was a fascinating book that was hard to put down. It’s written in a conversational style and the chapters are very short. In this book, Jean Coleman relays the story of her transformation from a Sunday church attendee to a woman who hears the voice of God and desires to know Him more, to seek Him and to be obedient to all she learns. Through this process, her life is transformed (in addition to her husband’s, children’s, and neighbor’s lives.and many others she encounters).

I loved the honest account of Jean seeking a deeper understanding of walking in faith and then taking those first steps in faith. This included the first steps to being bold enough to talk about God to her neighbor, starting a Bible Study (even when not feeling fully adequate to do so), and praying for her husband and children to grow in their faith. She also describes the journey of how she came to understand and experience (the sometimes controversial) speaking in tongues, interpreting tongues, healings, words of knowledge, miracles and more. I appreciated her genuine account of these experiences.

Jean is an inspiration! She has a passion for God, a curiosity to know Him more, and she is obedient to do the things that are revealed to her. Each time Jean takes a step of faith, she is encouraged more by the things that God reveals to her. This fuels a deeper relationship with Christ who then is able to reveal even more things to her. Since this book covers only the first three years of her faith journey (which happened many years ago), I can’t wait for Jean Coleman’s second book on how God has continued to use her. She now has a global ministry and has taken many more steps of faith over the years. Surely, there are many more stories to be told!

I was fortunate enough to receive a free electronic copy of this book that Jean had offered on the Christian Readers Discussion Group on the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ.com website. I am so thankful to her for writing it and for the opportunity to enjoy reading it!

You have probably never read a book quite like this! This is a true story about a housewife in Maryland who awakens one night and hears the voice of God speaking to her. Do things like this actually happen today? There is no doubt in this woman's mind that she has received a divine call and her search for the truth begins. There is confusion at first as Jean Coleman begins to take the first steps from sinner to devoted disciple. But when she finds herself at the foot of the cross, the transformation takes place. Her family is amazed over this new wife and mother who is living in their house. They are face to face with a completely different person who views herself as a modern-day disciple and sets out to change the world. The main body of the book covers the first three years of Jean's walk of adventure in the spirit and reads like a chapter from the Book of Acts in the Bible. It's a story of discovery, decisions, dedication and devotion. And in the surprise conclusion of the book, you will see where Jean Coleman is today. No, you have probably never read a book quite like this! It is a book that you will never forget and a book that has the ability to change your life if you dare to believe that with God all things are possible. This is not a fiction novel, but a true real-life testimony. Amazing things can happen to ordinary people when they have an encounter with the Living God. This book is the proof.

This testimony of an ordinary woman's transformation from spiritually dead to alive, and her subsequent rocking her world in Christ, is inspiring and challenging - you will be so blessed to read it, whatever your background! There is such an anointing on these pages. I found myself rejoicing out loud over Coleman's many experiences and just the goodness of God.

There is so much with which I can relate in this book, as someone who grew up in a conservative, evangelical denomination, but had exposure to spirit-filled believers and then eventually received the baptism myself. The frightened pastors, the deer-in-headlight looks from other Christians when one gets a little too excited about Christ, the grocery store evangelism, etc. I found myself laughing inwardly at much of this, yet excited how Jean persevered and even saw a harvest among the formerly "frozen chosen."

The writing is quick and relatable and very enjoyable. I would recommend Chapter 29 Revisited to anyone, from those mildly curious about Christianity, to the seasoned believer who has been walking with the Lord. Your faith will be built up and your heart quickened!

I want to start out by saying that I won this as from a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ contest. Chapter 29 Revisted is the true story of a woman finding God, which on its own is glorious. However, there were a few instances in the book that I simply did not agree with, particularly early on when she confronts the local Baptist minister about his own faith. This occurs just days after her own faith has been found, yet she already considers herself grounded enough in God to know that the pastor is a born-again with doubts rather than a humble minister. I found also that the book seemed to rush into "the big event" as I'll call it rather than give any background on her life beforehand. Other instances in the book simply did not ring true to me, such as the sudden disappearance of her cigarette addiction without a single withdrawal side effect or even a longing for it. The story itself holds inspiration, I'll agree, but even as a follower of the Lord myself I could not believe some of what supposedly occurred.

Wonderful story!!! Inspiring!!!! Sometimes we think that God doesn't have a plan or a need to use His children unless it is on a grander (larger) scale when, in fact, our "Mission Field" could be the neighborhood grocery store or PTA school meeting. That is how I view life after reading Pastor Jean's book. I look for opportunities to share Jesus at home, work and the Community College classroom (where God has put me after 28 years out of school!!!) keep writing, Pastor Jean!! I would love to read about your adventures in India!!!

This is truly an excellent book. It greatly encouraged me on a tough day when it was hard to remember all the blessing I've had from the Lord. It will minister to you also. The Lord's presence comes with the book.

I gave this book three stars, but towards the end I started feeling like it was worth more like two. It just got really redundant to me. This book is about a housewife who wasn't particularly religious and one day hears the voice of God audibly speaking to her. Mostly, it's about all the people who she's brought to the Lord. Which is great. Jean Coleman's story held my interest well enough.

There were some aspects of the author's beliefs that seemed a little backwoods-y church to me. Speaking in tongues and demon possession were two examples. And the whole "baptism of the Holy Spirit" thing and laying of the hands.

1.) Speaking in tongues. I've never experienced this first-hand. No offense to those who believe in that, but it's a little strange to me. I have attended an African-American church in the past where parishioners would become inflicted with the Holy Spirit and they would shake a lot and shout. Sort of like having a seizure. Their eyes would roll back into their heads and stuff... I don't know it was weird, but whatever. To each their own, you know? But, anyways afterwards everyone would gossip about who REALLY was possessed by the Holy Spirit and who was just showing off (aka faking it). That's kind of how I look at the speaking in tongues thing. I imagine it's very show off-y in churches that do this. More like an ego thing maybe? I suppose, maybe there's some people who for some reason speak in tongues. But, it's a bit over the top to me. Maybe I'm wrong, but to me God cares about what's in your heart, not who can act the most bizarre in His name in the Worship Hall, you know? Another reference point may be those backwoods Southern churches that do the snake-handling to prove their faith that God will not allow the poisonous snake to bite them. I was certain that the author was going to do this during some point of the book.

2.) Demon Possession. This is something that happens in The Bible as the author points out. Like speaking in tongues, maybe this has genuinely happened to a modern-day person. But, demon possession really just seems a bit like a likely excuse for people who don't want to be held accountable for their own poor choices in life. In the book, demon possessions are held responsible for overeating and substance abuse. "The demon made me do it" just does not sit well with me. People make mistakes, I think we should own up to those and stop living in denial that we're irresponsible or bad decision makers. Today (this is a true story) I ate too many cookies. I bought these great vanilla cookies at Super Target with fudge in the middle. I probably had four more than the regular serving size. Was it me or the demon? Definitely, the demon ate the extra cookies and hopefully it'll be his thighs that get bigger, not mine.

3.) Laying of the hands / Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Well, apparently if the author touches you and says a short and simple prayer you are suddenly infused with the Holy Spirit or possibly healed of whatever serious illness you have? I don't know??? I never really understood how that works even though it's constantly talked about in the book.

There were other odd things about this book that kind of turned me off a little. I think the biggest issue... and I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings because I am a very sensitive individual myself... but, I'm just going to say it: the author is VERY arrogant. Or at least that's how it comes across while reading. She really finds herself very special and important it seems. A few days after she became a believer she finds that most Christian aren't as devoted to The Lord as she and even lets one minister know he isn't. Another pastor pays a home visit to her and she turns up her nose because "he was obviously a born-again Christian". You know, like she was... and no church seems to be good enough for her. There's another point in the book where she talks about a woman named Phyllis and says, "Phyllis became one of my early disciples and was used through the years to bring many to the Lord". That's great. But, maybe I misread this or misunderstood the context, but did she just say that she personally has disciples? Another thing was at one point of the book she lists all the ways one might hear The Lord speak to them. However, as a woman who claims to AUDIBLY hear God speaking to her she never lists this as a way that WE may hear the Lord. Because that's saved for only her? Then, towards the end of the book after raving on and on about how she brought so many people to receive Christ into their hearts and how these people were crying and overjoyed (usually they receive the Lord and abounding joy to the point they're moved to tears after she simply reads them a Bible story or quotes a Bible verse) and then this guy comes along and he's like "I feel no different" and she goes on to talk about, in that chapter, how after accepting Jesus into your heart you probably won't feel anything and you'll just feel the same as always. After SO many emotional stories of people accepting Jesus, really???

Don't misunderstand what I'm trying to say here. This book was decent. It's worth a read and it is fairly short after-all. Jean Coleman's faith in The Lord is very inspiring and the depths to which she'll go to help a person in need is absolutely amazing and inspiring as well. The epilogue talks about all the mission trips she's done and really I feel like that would have made for probably a more interesting book. Notice, I said MORE interesting because I do feel like this one was interesting as well. If she writes a book about her travels abroad to serve God I will definitely read that one.

Can I have more empty stars to fill please for this book?

If you are pondering about whether you should get this book, Chapter 29 Revisited or not, Well......THAT'S A YES!!

Think no more!!! Hit that BUY NOW button right NOW because you are in for the most amazing adventure of a lifetime!!!

I could NOT put this book (my kindle), down until I was finished. I laughed and I cried (happy tears of course). As for me, I sometimes get a little down and just really don't feel so spiritually full-filled. I feel empty...or missing something. Well, that is when the doors open and the devil steps in with a "Tah-Dah!! I'm here at last!" (We know he tries ALL the time). Then he starts to put those awful thoughts in your head where he makes you think that God isn't real. While also adding....What are you thinking? Come on, go have fun with your friends...at the bar!! (btw, I don't drink).

So while I was browsing for any sort of `pick-me-up' book, amazingly, (from Gods Holy Spirit I'm sure), I came across this book, that Author Jean Coleman was so gracious to give to us free as a kindle download for a few days or so. So I said, WOW! She is sooooo lucky!!! I have GOT the hear (read) this!!! And, honestly, I won't be shy...it WAS free and YES I am frugal and cheap. I am not afraid to admit it. I hit that buy now button and impatiently waited for it to download to my kindle.

WELL......Just let me say.....OUTSTANDING!!!! Her amazing choices of those parts in her life, to gracefully share with us, of her years with, 'one on one', conversations with our All Mighty God! And of course, the point that I am sure most people probably would have felt the same way she did when the voices started. Like as to have thinking you were crazy, or unconsciously putting thoughts in your own head, or wait, was that spoken out loud?

What really grabbed me, was that she was so faithfully willing to be mocked or made fun of etc., or put in a rubber room, all for God. I think this is what He meant when He said, "If you are persecuted in the case of my name" (something like that) "You WILL be rewarded, more so than before and have everlasting life" (of course not the same words, but you get the point). Would it not make YOU proud and feel loved if someone stands up for you no matter what they would have to endure!! But she STILL took that chance, because number one, He told her too, while knowing all the possible consequences of doing so. But she knew she loved God. So she swallowed hard while thinking to herself, well... by gosh, if He needs me, then I'll go! And the Adventure began!!!!

Oh, and by the way, grab some tissue and some fluffy pillows. You WILL needs these!!!

After reading this inspiring biography, I feel it teaches us that the Grace of God is everywhere and available for us. All we need to do is grab it! You CAN, witness this gift given to us, by observing those that chose to grab it. Which are all seen by our works just from following the word of God. It emanates the PURE LOVE He shows for us. So, with that said, we CAN be sure, God is STILL here!

Enjoy your grand spiritual adventure!!

I didn't get a chance to review this right away as I went on vacation and then read another book in-between, so it isn't quite as fresh in my mind. I enjoyed this book and it grabbed me from the get-go. Very inspiring even for the born-again Christian. We should all have the faith and perseverance that Jean has through Christ! Yes, miracles do exist even today. If we are rooted in the word, and are "still", we can hear God speak and see the works of His hands. There were a few things in the book that had me questioning though....1) Baptism of the Spirit in which someone else had to pray the Holy Spirit to indwell within an individual. When we receive Christ and ask Him to be our personal savior, the Holy Spirit automatically enters us. It isn't a separate "step" or ritual that has to take place. 2) I have problems with the Speaking of Tongues but that could just be because I don't understand this, nor why it takes place. It could just be my ignorance. The only other thing I would say is that perhaps everything happened way too perfectly in Jean's life and those around her. We all know that once we become believers, the trials and tribulations do not end but get worse which draws us closer to God. Jean mentions that her son accepted Christ and is now in the ministry, but unless I missed it, what about her daughters? The book might be a bit more believable if the not-so-good things were mentioned as well. ex. my daughter (father, mother, brother, etc.) still has not accepted Christ and is living her own life but we pray for her everyday. Something that didn't perhaps wrap up quite so nice and tidy as everything else did. Give something more we can relate to.

I'm currently re-reading this book for, I don't know, maybe the fourth time. I really appreciate Ms. Coleman's candor and enthusiasm. Her Christian witness is compelling and appealing. She covers a wide range of aspects of living a Christian life with anecdotes from her own experience, whether it is a time she succumbed to temptation; to God's financial provision, whether in the large concern of her daughter's college tuition or the modest one of paying bills during a particularly tight month; or to her practice of sharing the gospel at the grocery store. Her topics are relevant to living a faith-filled life, and I find her example tremendously helpful, especially as she doesn't preach or belabor a subject.

Review for “Chapter 29 Revisited-Non Fiction
“Chapter 29 Revisited: The amazing true story of what happens when a typical American housewife meets Jesus! by Jean Coleman is a wonderful inspirational testimony of one woman’s birth into the kingdom. I enjoyed this book. Jean Coleman writes in a simple way that is easy to grasp and you can tell she is excited about her subject. She shares several moving stories from her own life, calling it the 29th book of Acts, then challenges to write our own 29th chapter. I give this book 5 stars. This book is appropriate for pre-teens on up.

This book fell into my hands when I needed a lot of encouragement, my life felt like a walk on a foggy day, no way to see the path. Reading Jean's story was so refreshing, it gave me hope that God is still the same and can do the same for me that he did for those who loved him thousands of years ago. Read this book if you need an extra help for faith!
