Modern Battles #1

Fighting for Hope

Rate this book
Eccentric Sir Malcolm Witherspoon has bequeathed a rare piece of land to the Oxford Hospital Trust with only one stipulation: it must become the site for a new medical center. Unfortunately, he left the details unwritten. Now, several hospital departments are fighting to get their visions approved by the Appropriations Committee. Head of Pediatrics Dr. Grayson Burrows believes the land should be used to build a new children’s hospital. Oncologist Dr. James Pearson is certain a cancer research center will do the most good.

It’s a battle neither wants to lose.

Soon, their professional integrity is on the line, and they don’t see eye to eye on medical care: Grayson thinks a holistic approach is optimal, while James knows logical trial and error works best. But when they’re tasked with obtaining the hospital board's approval for their respective proposals, their personal attraction threatens to take over, making them behave in an entirely unprofessional way. As the deadline looms on the committee's decision, both Grayson and James must reevaluate their priorities or neither doctor will get what he wants.

I’m a night owl and start writing when everyone else in my time zone is asleep. I’ve loved reading all my life and spent most of my childhood with my nose buried in a book. Although I always wanted to be a writer, financial independence came first. Twenty-some years and a successful business career later I took some online writing classes and never looked back.

Living and working in eight countries has taught me that there is more than one way to get things done. It has instilled tremendous respect for the many different cultures, beliefs, attitudes, and preferences that exist on our planet.

I like exploring those differences in my stories, most of which happen to be romances. My characters have a tendency to want to do their own thing, so I often have to rein them back in. The one thing we all agree on is the desire for a happy ending.

I currently live in Canada, sharing my house with a vast collection of books. I like reading, traveling, spending time with my nieces and listening to classical music. I have a passion for science and learning new languages.

Published today, on August 2, 2013 at , Fighting for Hope is a very special book for me.

It was the very first full-length novel I ever finished - 6 years ago. I still remember the relief I felt when I typed 'The End' - I had actually done it, finished a book. I'm very excited that Dreamspinner Press is re-releasing it, in both e-book and paperback.

What's next? The second book, , is Danny McBrae's story, he is Grayson Burrow's best friend in book one, and doesn't really expect to fall in love at all... This novel will be an all-new release with Dreamspinner Press in September.

And I'm very happy to announce that I just signed the contract for the third volume, , in which Grayson's brother, Dr. Alastair Burrows, survives a plane crash over the Amazon jungle... Currently, release is planned for December, but that may change, so watch this spot.

I hope you will enjoy Fighting for Hope. It's the same story as before, so if you already own the e-book but want the new version (to fit the rest of the series), please contact me with your proof of purchase (serena AT serenayates DOT com) and I'll e-mail it to you.

I hope you enjoy Grayson and James's "fight for hope".

Reviewed on Hearts On Fire...

I read this book because I had read The Florist and felt that I owed Ms Yates another try. Also the publishing company asked for a review. I'm very glad that I grabbed this wonderful slow burn romance story. Grayson Burrows and James Pearson are both doctors at Oxford but come at medicine from two very different angles and with two very different personalities. Grayson is a tender hearted man who believes in the holistic approach to treating patients. James is all right brain logic who sees patients only as an illness to be treated. A large parcel of land has been gifted to Oxford and the appropriations committee is going over five different proposals as to what kind of medical facility to build. James is proposing that a theoretical research center be built while Grayson is proposing a children's hospital. Left brain and right brain have been physically attracted to each other since the day they first met but both men have a difficult time making the first move. James and Grayson get past their shyness but then everything gets complicated by their competition for the land grant and they just don't understand each other on a personal level and wind up angry and hurt more than touching and kissing. I loved the way Ms Yates set up the tension in these two wonderfully written main characters. It was almost comical at some points the way these two opposites misunderstood one another. I could feel the ache in each man's heart and wanted to shake them when I wasn't shaking my own head at them. Danny and Robert ere great as each man's best friend and confidant and their voice of common sense helped to give the story its HEA. Getting two opposite men who hurt easily together was no cake walk. As I said earlier, this story is a slow burn romance story so if you are in a rush this book is not for you. I heartily recommend this touching story to anyone who is willing to invest some time in two very confused lovers as you'll be well rewarded.

I greatly enjoyed this new release from author, Serena Yates. Grayson and James are both fascinating characters and the storyline involving logic vs emotion was well written and unique. The story kept my interest until the end and I'm grateful to the author for writing it!

Grayson is the head of the pediatric department and due to his own neglected childhood he knows how much love and caring children need in order to heal. He wants the land for a new children's hospital and is willing to go head to head with James in order to get it. Who knew he'd be so attracted to James in the first place?

James comes from a background of pure science and logic. He wants the land for a state of the art research facility. He is confused by the emotions that Grayson brings out in him and he definitely doesn't understand Grayson's ideas about caring for patients.

It's so much fun when opposites attract! This was a great read that I enjoyed immensely and look forward to more in the series.

The story of James and Grayson is probably the most "romantic" mm book I've read in a long time. Yes there was a bit of angst and miscommunication and a lack of communication but both guys were serious romantics at heart. At times predictable but there was couple times when I was completely surprised about the next turn of events. It was, all in all, a very enjoyable story, with a decent plot, character development (both main and secondary) and more romance then sex. It was a nice change of pace and i recommend to evryone.

I'm in the mood for some sexy Doctors. This is not the first book by Serena Yates that I have read but I like this one very much. The way that she wrote the characters James and Grayson are wonderful. The way that they are both so screwed up that they just have to gravitate to each other, but both MC's were so emotionally drained that they didn't know how to trust the feelings that they had for one another.

The novelist Arnold Bennet said: “There can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we have felt its force, it is not ours. To the cognition of the brain must be added the experience of the soul. The argument of logic versus emotion has been debated since antiquity, but it's my contention that one is not effective without the other. There's no way to make a logical decision without involving emotion because without it, there would be no context in which to measure it. Leaving one or the other out can lead to misunderstanding and avoidable angst. This is certainly demonstrated by Dr. Grayson Burrows and Dr. James Pearson of 'Fighting for Hope' by Serena Yates.

Grayson is a wonderful man with a great deal of compassion, especially for his patients, all of whom are children with cancer. Grayson is dedicated to protect them and make sure they feel safe and loved in addition to attending to their physical needs. He sees a new hospital center for them as an excellent way to do so and when an opportunity comes along to make this dream a reality, he's determined to not let anything get in the way, even his own happiness. Unfortunately, this skews his feelings and logic when it comes to his personal relationship. I'd have been more upset with him, but his reasoning made perfect sense, at least from his perspective, although in reality it was irritatingly convoluted and caused more problems than it solved.

James is more confident than Grayson in many ways. He's an accomplished musician and surprisingly romantic as well. Music is beautiful, but it's also unequivocally logical with its scales, measures, and timing. I was quite impressed with James for using his love of music to express his emotions, while still being able to maintain his valued sense of order. Even though James thinks more logically than Grayson, his factual point of view inhibits his life. His thinking is also skewed when he tries to examine Grayson's emotions and he ends up misinterpreting motives as well. It's only when both men are able to admit what they feel without trying to analyze it, either logically or emotionally, that they're able to form the basis they need, not only for their relationship, but for all the other facets of their lives.

I loved this story. It's unique in that it has an element many love stories lack, expressed in a beautiful, endearing manner. It gets down to the heart of things, the ones that are truly important. James and Grayson are strong, determined, admirable men, with a great passion for what they do and, therefore, deserve to find that same degree of passion in the meeting of hearts and minds which constitutes a loving relationship. As in everything, balance is the key. If you are a romantic, like me, you will enjoy this heartfelt story of bravery, love, passion, intrigue, loss, and discovery, reminding us that hope is truly worth fighting for. Thank you, Serena, for sharing your vision of hope with us.

So I sorta read this one with no real expectations and not really knowing what to read next.. Worked well.. I really enjoyed the two characters a lot... They were both having internal monologues/thought process's that I know all to well.. So I made that connection..

The story.. well it was good.. didn't really focus on the careers of our characters, but it was part of the theme and used in a way that stopped this book from becoming corny.. (and it was close a couple of times!)

The theme.. I want to address this as the review I read is what made me pick this up. The theme is fighting.. not in the guns and hair pulling manner but the different types of fights people have in daily life... or in life in general! Frankly I really didn't expect a lot from this theme but it was enough to grab my attention.. and as you can see from the stars above - I think Serena REALLY did it well.. Not only did the characters have their little internal thoughts and monologues but they were the common theme that runs through my head on a daily basis..

So I tip my hate to you Serena, I look forward to the next book in the series!

Serena Yates book, FIGHTING FOR HOPE, was clearly written from her heart. The basic struggle of the protagonists is one of logic vs emotion, personal commitment vs professionalism. That is a good premise for a book, especially one that is based on the medical profession.
The plot moves inexorably to the predictable conclusion where both men are able to confide in each other instead of their best friends and find a middle ground upon which to build a relationship. I was pleased with the HEA, which was satisfying and thoughtfully played out. Ms Yates is a new author for me to follow and I look forward to reading the next book in the MODERN BATTLES series.

I'm rating this at 3.5 stars, but rounding it up to 4 for the purpose of this review. Overall, it was a nice story with lovely characters - I particularly liked James and his 'logical' ways - but the story did drag a little in a few places and there were a few editing mistakes that pulled me out of the story. While it's not my favourite book from Ms. Yates, it was still an enjoyable read and managed to hold my interest enough for me to want to keep on reading. I also ADORED the ending. So cute - I really am a sucker for a HEA. Oh, and can I just add how stunning the guys on the cover are?! Beautiful ;)

Luckily, with some great advice from some very good friends, the two pull their heads out of it and find some common ground and survive for their HEA. Who wins the plot of land you ask? Will it be the new Oxford Children’s Hospital or will it be the Oxford Cancer Research Center? Well duh, you will have to read it to find out. I hope you enjoy the journey to the conclusion like I did. This is one book of Serena Yates that I can read over and over again. I hope you love it as much as I did.

What the fuckery is this?!!? I had to double check just to make sure I was reading an M/M book. I was almost certain I was reading a book with two female MCs who had decidedly male names.
I mean, I definitely don't mean to stereotype and there are ALL types, but holy crap is this book the definition of typical chicks, only with dicks. And to lessen the blow of stereotyping, I'll tell you these two "chicks with dicks" don't sound or act like ANY woman I know; they're so juvenile and ridiculous, nothing about all this was believable ... certainly not the fact that the MCs are medical doctors.
No patience for this one at all.

Dr. Grayson Burrows wants to help children. Dr. James Pearson wants to find the next great cure. As the story unfolds you realize that they have similar hardships in different ways growing up but they seemed to have made really different conclusions in their life in how to handle it. The emotions that play in this story are very powerful. It was amazing to watch the growth of both me in the story. The dramatic turn was interesting but I think the story would have worked just as well without.

3.5 stars but 4 for GR.
The story was OK but dragged in parts. Parts of it were not believable - 3 days at home after being in a coma then going out - sorry doesn't happen. At times one struggled to remember that these were 2 professional men. Parts were sweet and overall I enjoyed my read.

Dr. Grayson Burrows, head of pediatrics for the Oxford Hospital Trust, has a dream of building a children's hospital on a newly acquired piece of land. But his new colleague, oncologist Dr. James Pearson has come on board to push for a new cancer research center. Both believe strongly in their projects, and both believe in the value they could have for improving the lives of patients. Although the two are at odds on the project, they become friends--and quickly realize there is the potential for them to become something more. But can people with diametrically opposed interests and goals build a relationship? And when the competition for project approval intensifies, can they trust each other not to undermine their budding romance to get what they want in the workplace?

I actually was quite entertained by and engaged with this story, but I am not surprised considering it was written by Serena Yates. There's just something about the characters and situations that comes through in her writing that makes it real and relevant. And these guys are ones to follow for sure...

Dr. Grayson Burrows and Dr. James Pearson are both vying for the same thing. Both want to be granted use of the new building site, which was left to the hospital by Sir Malcolm Witherspoon. Grayson wants the site to go to the children’s department and James wants it for theoretical research.

When these two men first meet there is an instant attraction, but neither one of them seems to be willing to make the first move. Grayson could use James support with setting up a new Oncology unit for the children, and after talking at length James impulsively invites Grayson to dinner. After a few dinners and a day of hiking both men realize they really like each other, but they’ve both been hurt terribly in the past and neither one of them really wants to go through that again.

These two guys had me wanting to pull my hair out. They both were so back-and-forth with their feelings that I wanted to insert myself into the book just so I could slap them.

With both of them having professional and personal problems, they weren’t sure they could separate the two, and for most of the book they couldn’t. Grayson was all about the kids and their emotional needs, not to mention healing them. James was all about research and logic, he just didn’t understand it any other way. Despite those things these guys are drawn to each other, they can’t help it but they just can’t seem to pull it together and trust that things will work out. Both of them are very sensitive men. Insecure and so afraid afraid to hope for something more. With all of the ups and downs these two went through, I wasn’t sure they were ever going to get it together but then Grayson has an accident and James just can’t take it anymore. He’s going to get his man no matter what it takes.

I’ll admit, I had a really hard time getting into this book. There were just things that made the story hard for me to read.

The first problem I had were the two main characters and the fact that they both behaved like teenagers all the time. All that back-and-forth just seemed so childish.

The second was the dialogue. I’m not used to reading books were both MC’s talk like they’re elegant old men. Saying things like divine, despicable, atrocious. It’s not something I’m used too.

The third thing that I had trouble getting used too was that both MC’s seemed to be so soft and delicate, where I’m used to having at least one of them being more dominant.

I’ve never read anything by this author before and even though I had a difficult time with this book, it won’t stop me from trying other books she has written.

James comes to Britain to help get a theoretic research facility. There is only one spot and several departments trying to get it. He meets Grayson, the head of the children's department and feels a strong attraction for him immediately. He has been hurt before and stays busy so he isn’t hurt again. They have so much in common personally but James bases everything on logic and Grayson is full if heart and believes in holistic medicine. Can they keep their professional and personal lives separate?
Wow! Wow! Wow! This is absolutely beautiful. This story is heartfelt, deep, loving, sensual, sexy, and sweet. I think this is one if the most romantic stories I've read in a while. Both characters are very loving, caring, sweet men with deep convictions. The storyline is also poignant on both the romantic and professional fronts. It has a lesson in fighting for what you believe in and trust. The sex is so sensual, and sexy. The description in this story is over the top though down to telling which and is used to do what motion, and tiniest details are given, but I love that, for some it could be too much, but not for me. Oh wow is there a shocking twist that is unbelievable, I bawled my eyes out!
I highly recommend this story to anyone that loves a good romance, a poignant story with great detail, lots of twists and turns, a tear jerker, and a sweet happy ending with yet another surprise.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the internal dialogs of the the two main characters and how their "fight" was with themselves and their own fears/past experiences. I also liked the philosophical discussion regarding medical practice that ran throughout the story and how each person learned from the other. Additionally, it was refreshing that Grayson and James spent time and energy considering and discussing their relationship rather than falling into bed and then stumbling into a relationship afterward. While that might not sound romantic, this book IS romantic. Oh, and their first kiss - one of the sexiest kisses I have ever read. One little niggle I had was with the beginning of the book - there was dialog that each of the main characters has with his best friend during which past, failed relationships were discussed. That dialog seemed a bit contrived. And was unnecessary as Ms. Yates does a good job incorporating that information later in the book in a more organic fashion. I am going to start the sequel now...looking forward to reading about Danny. Note: I received a complimentary copy of this book as part of a goodreads contest. But I did purchase the sequel.

Sadly, this is one of those books you can just tell was written by a woman. It also reads as written by someone too young to really know what a man is like, which I don't happen to think true about the author at all. Between yawns, I kept thinking that these are two men who really should be women and unfortunately have the wrong parts. The constant back and forth of oh-I-love-him, he-doesn't-like-me and I'm-so-ashamed-of-what-I-did, so-now-I-must-apologize drove me absolutely bonkers. Really? I've never known a man who did that. Their wishy-washy personalities are so not the kind of people who would have made it so far into their professions as these two did. They certainly didn't have the mental thought processes of someone who's supposed to be in their late 30's, early 40's. The one poor guy who is supposed to be learning to show emotions certainly has far more than the other guy who is constantly crying. Ugh, I just wanted to smack him and say grow a pair. There was so much I wanted to like about the book, but the terrible prose just killed it for me.

Each title follows a different couple in this interconnected world. They are each sweet, somewhat low-angst stories with the obligatory happily ever afters. There is nothing blatantly wrong with any of these stories, and as such they are good comfort reads.

The MCs were supposed to be educated, mature, adult males - it was more like being in the middle of a group of teenage girls. Thankfully, I didn't start the series with this book as it's unlikely I would have read any more of them.
