Shima wants to do something different in her life and decides to make more of her hobby: drawing. She enrols at a famous art school where people are soon to point out that she doesn't even know the basics of art. But that doesn't let Shima down - she loves to draw and won't let anything put a damper on her passion, not even the school's most-praised artist Akatsuki.
I am baffled by the number of average ratings Crayon Days is receiving - as far as I'm concerned, this is a beautiful manga. First and foremost, art is not just a means to make Shima seem to have more depth - art is indeed a core and important theme throughout this series. She loves to draw and it shows - there are several beautiful panels in which she just drifts off and is wholly in her element of spreading colours on whichever surface offers itself.
Not unsurprisingly, there is a love story between Shima and Akatsuki, and they make such a fun and wholesome couple. They bicker a lot but it's done in a rather loving way; Shima doesn't let Akatsuki's comments bring her down and instead she boldly stands up to him. The bickering lasts throughout the series but both of them are also very caring and gentle toward each other - I love that they talk things out so that there's never any serious drama around things such as jealousies. Akatsuki in particular is very supportive in his way and, despite teasing Shima a lot, he never puts her into a situation where she truly doubts herself which I find is often the case in shoujo where the male leads act distant to make the girl feel bad.
Shima herself makes a lovely heroine - at times she may appear naive but I just love her positive attitude. She's such a ray of sunshine who loves what she does and doesn't waste time moping about. Sure, even Shima has moments where she feels sad, she's human after all, but she always gets back up on her feet to face whatever it was that caused her grief - she's definitely a proactive main character.
The supporting cast is ok - nothing too special, nothing too bland. Perhaps it's notable that Shima's friends are a lesbian couple, but that's about all that makes them stand out in any way. What was a bit of a shame is that Shima mentions quite early in the series that she feels unhappy about her parents; her younger sister is sickly and gets a lot of the parents' attention while they never paid much attention to Shima's interest in art. It would have been nice if this had been picked up on again but sadly that was not the case.
Chiba's art is quite typical for shoujo, but it's a beautiful style nonetheless (if you like shoujo art, which I do), and it becomes more refined with each new work she creates. The art alone is a big reason to give this one a go. It's beyond me why this series receives such a poor rating as I consider it to be well above the average of its kind.
I loveeeeeed this series back in 2014 and now I wanted to read it for the 2nd time but I shouldn't have done that, lol. I'm obviously older now and a lot of things that didn't bother me back then (which is ???) are bothering me now. So it's a 2 stars rating for me. I like it (probably bc of Nostalgia) but there are a couple of things that I don't enjoy that much (The love interest is mean and touched Shima, the protagonist, twice without her consent. Luckily, the first time she kicked him in the balls tho??)
This is sweet. *smile Even though it only have 27 chapter, the short manga i've ever read but im happy w the ending. Saji is so handsomely talented in drawing but unsociable. Shima is a cheerful girl and love painting. She genius using a colour. They completed each other. Satisfied w it :)
Addirittura cinque stelle! Letto adesso... S━, carino e simpatico.
I've had this and the next volume sitting on my "currently reading" shelf forever in the hope of motivating me to pick it back up, but I'm just not interested in it. While the story idea is ok, the characters incite only meh for me.
The drawing style is really what drew me to this manga. It's reminiscent of Fushigi Yugi. (I definitely had flashbacks of Tamahome a few times.) The story hasn't stepped out of your stereotypical shoujo manga, but I'm in the mood for fluff and this fits the bill well.
I was not really a fan of this one, that¨s why it gets 2.5 stars from me. Crayon Days is your average Shojo manga with some Shojo-tropes that I can¨t stand. We have the ^I have to sit next to the love interest who I hate ̄-clich└ and the over-the-top depiction of lesbians (but at there was some representation).
Another thing that I was not the biggest fan of was the art style. I can¨t really put my finger on it, but the frames were too big and seemed sometimes just empty. The faces looked kinda weird as well; the eyes were nicely-Shojo like, but something about the rest was off putting.
When looking at the characters, the love interest is terrible and when hearing the name Akatsuki, I always have to think about the love interest from This Lonely Planet, who is a thousand times better than the guy in Crayon Days. First, he touches Shima without her consent multiple times which is really disgusting, and he¨s generally really mean to her. I don¨t really have an opinion on Shima, she¨s your average Shojo protagonist.
We will see how the story of those two will evolve over the course of the next volumes.
Crayon Days: ? Average rating for the whole series: 2.75
I think Kozue Chiba likes to make her characters artists. I like he previous work more. The heroine here is so innocent country girl and the hero is a tsundere genius. I will see if the story will be better.
Entertaining enough, but so very quick that it felt that the characters barely got to know one another. And I don't know if the fact that there was a lesbian side-couple that was barely discussed was a positive or a negative thing, in that was it intended as a token diverse pairing to make a change from the two female best friends of the protagonist, or is it wonderful because it's inclusive and there's no drama about them being together? I'm not quite sure. But I do wish we had got to know them better, ala Honey & Clover.
Likewise, the drawings were pretty, a bit typical shojo, and I had trouble telling the characters apart at times, which is never a good thing. But it wasn't a bad read and does discuss themes of striking out on your own to achieve your dreams and working hard to do so. Even with love-at-first-sight, a male lead who acts wild and puts the heroine down, and love-triangle cliches, it managed to be sweet. That actually sounded more negative than I intended...
