As far as an omegaverse manga featuring high school students, this was one of the better ones. It does contain an attempted rape scene involving three alphas and an omega, so be aware of that if you plan on reading it. I can't say that I really connected with the main characters, but I did enjoy the story. 3 stars

I enjoy more darker themes in stories, so I didnt mind the trauma. For a BL thats set in high school, its def one of the less pedoy ones. Really loved the art style, and the darker themes helped build a strong story.

Erstmal: Zeichenstil AMAZING.

I had high hopes for this one and I was not disappointed.

This manga starts off a little rough with a story told in pieces that doesn’t make sense until later on. I always like this approach because I enjoy getting thrown into a character’s world and figuring out what’s going on and why, given it’s done correctly.

This story is set in omegaverse where we have beta, omega and alpha as a secondary gender and males can get pregnant. As with many omegaverse stories, this one also features an attempted rape scene to underline not just the intensity but also the power divide between the secondary genders. I honestly don’t like rape scenes and feel like they don’t need to be part of the story. Also, I’m a sucker for scenes where one of the characters saves the other, but I wish it wasn’t in these scenarios.

The plot in this story isn’t unique but the characters and the execution is. Haruto is almost a perfectly depicted alpha. Although he’s getting in Miyabi’s space, he’s also keeping a distance and simply trying to heal him. Haruto doesn’t force himself on Miyabi and instead works hard to try and win Miyabi. On the other hand, Miyabi’s character can seem kind of rough and smug in the beginning but he honestly just needs a big warm hug. Miyabi has been through a lot since he’s an omega and sadly carries a trauma thanks to his family. I’m glad Haruto found him and supports Miyabi.

This manga has a lot of cute and warm scenes throughout. In the latter half, when Haruto and Miyabi become closer, they are the most precious. As a reader, you can tell from their interactions; the soft hugs, gentle touches, and their words. I love how their relationship is depicted and how it grows over countless interactions solidifying the trust and emotions between them. They really fit each other perfectly and I enjoyed cheering for them.

The artwork is really nice and gentle on the eyes. For a story with a lot of heavy undertones, I think the artwork does well in balancing things out. It doesn’t underscore the intensity or gravity of the issue but presents them in a manner which doesn’t make the reader feel too uncomfortable. I liked the use of backgrounds in this manga. This is one of the few I’ve read where there is just the right amount of detail in the background to highlight and assist the foreground characters and their emotions. Additionally, this is an explicit manga so the scenes are graphic without any censoring or hiding.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read and one I’m looking forward to re-reading before starting volume two. It’s unfortunately a short series but I think that’s a perfect length for this story. I definitely recommend giving it a read but do research the trigger warnings!

A Highschool Boys Love manga that made me cry 😭 but is still adorable! It is an Omegaverse, explores dark themes of trauma & abuse, all while the alpha MC is such a green flag 😍.
I read this book before bedtime, it's a quick story with Vol 1 having 5 chapters + bonus. My 1st book of October, & what a start!

Kita is sarcastic, comes off as a smug bastard. But that is his shield 😭. Underneath he's traumatized, insecure, sweet. He was an omega in hiding, till Haru came along. I HATE HIS SHITTY FAMILY, THOSE SHITTY CLASSMATES 😤😤🔪.

Haru's transferred to Kita's school from an alpha only elite school. Haru's cool & a sweetheart! Fights with K at start, but when K's health turns worse, H helps K. Stays with him, walks with him, feeds him 😭. His family is awesome!

TW: SA, attempted SA, eating disorder.

H+K's story is a slowburn, even in these 5 chapters. H shows K that K deserves so much better. Them being happy in later chapters made me so happy! They deserve the best!

The story was a lil confusing at ch 1, but ch 2 onwards, IT CLICKED. The art style's good too. Kita looked scary at start lol, but he shined later (like H!). We do get couple sexy/heat moments (+ actual condom use in Omegaverse, awesome!) & yay bonding 😍. I'll totally be reading the Vol 2 soon!

Comic rating:

1) The Characters & relationship: 5/5
2) Story feels: 😳😝😭🥺😊😂🥰😗🙁😖😤😈😢😍🥰
3) Art: 4.5/5 (not colored)
4) Sexy/Steamy scenes: One & a half.

Oh wow, I really liked this. Based on the first few pages, I wasn't sure I was going to, but once I hit the omega abusing suppressants to the point where he was sick and throwing them back up on top of being super malnourished, I was absolutely hooked. (I love whump and hurt/comfort stories so, so, so much, what more need I say?)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I love interesting takes on the omegaverse genre. And while I cannot say this was interesting in that it was a new, refreshing take, it was interesting because it ramped up the traumatizing and grotesque side of the omegaverse. Again, it's nothing new to paint omegas as inferior members of society who have to fight twice as hard for respect and who need to fear assault on a daily basis, but this societal structure and social condemnation was taken to a new degree in Kitahara's character and the trauma and abuse he suffered from his family. The more I was shown about his upbringing, the more my heart ached for him and the more I understood why he spoke and acted the way he did -- he was still living in trauma and trapped in a cycle of abuse that hurt himself and others (namely Ichijo). I loved seeing Kitahara evolve and unpack his trauma, and even though it read a bit sloppy, I like that his growth felt like one step forward, two steps back, with him on edge, going with the flow, pulling back, reflecting, and so on. It made for a more confusing narrative flow, but I think it was a very good, and very real, depiction of the very nonlinear path often taken by those healing from trauma.

Related, I like that Ichijo's role in this process was to mostly just be a pillar of support. He becomes Kitahara's friend, he looks out for him, he cooks for him, and he does, ultimately, save him from an assault, and he is a huge factor in Kitahara healing, but he does not "fix" Kitahara, nor does Saki Sakimoto ever imply that Ichijo can "fix" Kitahara. Even when Ichijo wants to learn about omegas, it's not so he can swoop in and save Kitahara, it's so he can understand what his friend is going through and learn how he can support him to the best of his ability. And I also really love that. Because that is also how healing from trauma often works -- you are not just 'saved' by someone; you also have to put the work in and build on the kindness, love, and assistance others give you.

I wasn't sure what to think of Saki Sakimoto's art style at first. It has this almost feral, chaotic look to it that I expected to find off-putting in most scenes, but I ended up really liking it (especially since this look really heightened the traumatic vibe of Kitahara's heats and his overall physical and mental health not being great). I knew, of course, the more intense, high emotion, and action scenes would look great (also shout out to Sakimoto's liberal use of blood and bruising textures!! I noticed and appreciate it!), but I was surprised to find that even the more calm and tender scenes worked really well in this art style. Character's expressions, particularly Kitahara's were really beautiful, and captured the emotional state of the characters very well.

Overall, I really liked this, and I am excited to read the sequel and see how Kitahara and Ichijo continue to grow and evolve together.

I love accidentally stumbling on OV MM manga haha.

This was darker than other HS aged OVs (SA, one of the MMCs has past trauma) and I really loved the art!

I wasn't exactly drawn to either of the leads though, but still thoroughly enjoyed it. Will be continuing this series as far as I know.

Miyabi has been keeping a secret for a long time that he is an Omega. He grew up in a family that made him feel as if being an Omega is disgusting, and they only serve one purpose. Unfortunately he also goes to school with a few people that share the thought that omegas are nothing but something to be fucked. So Miyabi took many suppressants and hid away his nature. He’s spent years convincing others he is not an Omega. Until one day an Alpha named Haruto transfers schools and ends up being in class with Miyabi. Miyabi has been convinced that all alphas are assholes and they only want his body. So right from the start Miyabi tries pushing him away and does nothing but fight with him. But Haruto is one of the absolute sweetest alphas to exist, and slowly he shows Miyabi they’re not all the same. Haruto may be attracted to Miyabi, but he doesn’t want him for just his body. Haruto wants to care for Miyabi. He visits him, cooks for him, sits with him and never leaves his side. Miyabi is on an emotional tailspin trying to figure out what this alpha’s game is, but there is none. While Haruto and Miyabi are slowly blossoming, Miyabi learns what it means to heal. To understand some people are toxic and undeserving of his apologies or love. He learns to let go of his past and even more recent traumatic experiences that have happened to him, and let them go for himself.

This is a quick, but wholesome manga that explores a beautiful relationship between a sweet Alpha and a traumatized Omega. I enjoyed this so much. The storyline, the mix of angst and sweet, the enemies to lovers vibe, and even their spicy moments. The art was beautiful.

I will say for anyone that’s gotten this far in my review - content warnings of sexual assault, attempted rape, violence, and bullying. Be mindful ❤️

I received this manga from TokyoPop in exchange of an honest review.

OMG, the start was a bit rough (some scenes felt a bit random), but I can just tell you that I LOVE this one so much. Before I start with my review I would like to state trigger warnings for sexual assault (several pages) and incest (not that long).

I do love books featuring beta/alpha/omega, aka the omegaverse, so I was excited when I got the reviewer mail from TokyoPop and this was on it. I was curious how it was going to work, I have read a lot of good stuff, but also several iffy ones. I can say that after reading this that there were some issues (like the incest, the way Miyabi’s dad and brother treated him next to that, and then that sexual assault + him being harassed), but that there were also a lot of good parts.

I really loved our Alpha, Haruto. He is 100% an alpha as you can clearly see with how he walks through life, how people treat him with both fear, awe, and respect. But he is also a sweetheart. He knows that his alpha pheromones are messing with Miyabi who is an omega, but he tries his best to help him out. Plus, though he is also affected, he sticks his guns and never makes a bad move unless Miyabi agrees with it. And I was just loving it, because you can see that it isn’t always the easiest, but he manages. He tries to help Miyabi when things get hairy (or horny as it is his heat time). He cooks meals for him (thanks to his mom who gives him cooking lessons). Tries to find better medicines to suppress things better, gives him the opportunity of better doctors if that needs to be. He showers him with love and kindness and hugs. I just love that he never gave up on Miyabi, he really fought for him (later on even for reals). And I loved all he planned for Miyabi’s birthday!

Miyabi, oh, boy, I just wanted to give him a hug. I could understand that he was acting like such a smug bitch for several bits of the book. If the alternative is that people see you as an omega and thus treat you like shit? Not to mention, Miyabi has been through a lot of shit. I mean, his father disowned/kicked him out of his house. His brother sexually assaulted him (and probably not one time given how traumatised Miyabi is). I would also try to hide what I was in every possible way, and if being smug is the way? Go for it. I felt for Miyabi, I could understand why he did the things he did and how it took a long long time before he could trust Haruto. How even when showered with love he expected the worst. I loved seeing him get more comfortable around Haruto and see him grow more healthy, open up more to Haruto. And see him fall in love slowly bit by bit.

The love between these two? You are just rooting for these two to get in a relationship, seriously. They are just perfect together and I was just hoping that Miyabi would open some doors in his walls and let Haruto in. I was just squeeing all the way, especially the later parts when they plan dates and see each other more. And the latter parts where everything just clicked together? I was crying, cheering, YASSSsing all the way.

What I didn’t expect is, that the sex scenes were not censored. OK, the penises looked a bit odd at times, but for most there was no light bar or mist or whatever else manga and anime uses to not show certain things. I am so used to light bars that I was like, wait, that is a penis. XD

Oh, and this girl LOVES bonus scenes and extras at the end of stories so YAS!

The art was really pretty and I like the style.

All in all, even with some iffyness this was one manga that I am very glad I read! It was a ride for sure with a couple you want to root for. I am curious to see what is next for this couple!

Was pleasantly surprised by this one. Looking at an omengaverse set in high school, I had fairly low expectations, but I found this to be a pretty good storyline. I usually eye roll over the trope of two characters meeting for the first time and not being able to stop thinking about them, but if the first time I met someone and they threw up on me, looked ill and then didnt come to school after that, I too would probably not be able to stop thinking about that person. Overall, an enjoyable story for that it was.

DNF at 87%. I know that's close to the end, but I had been pushing through reading this so it wouldn't end up being DNF, but I really just couldn't anymore.

NOTE
I am going to edit this later to actually put the characters names in. I'm writing this on the ŷ app, and don't want to lose the progress on this review if I exit the app (again ugh).
There's * because I don't recall if the app has something against using those words. I'll check later.

GENERAL
Overall, I hate the drawing style. There is some pretty cool page layouts, but in general it frustrated me. It annoyed me to no end that one of the main character's hair constantly looked greasy.
I really didn't like the explicit underage s*x (also see spoilers triggers below).
I thought all of the characters were unlikable, and to be honest, there aren't any fleshed out minor characters other than the two main characters. Each scene is only the two of them, with barely a handful of exceptions (and see spoilers and triggers for that). It ruins any sort of worldbuilding (but see spoilers and triggers for more on that).
The dialogue is awful. None of it seems natural.
Things in the plot only happen to show how traumatized one of the main character is. Hell, he's even drawn to appear traumatized 24/7. It's frustrating.
It's perfectly fine to have dark themes in your story, but again, it's only used here to have us pity the omega.

SPOILERS & TRIGGERS FOR DARK THEMES!!!!!!
There's underage s*x, both conseunal and nonconsensual. The drawings are not detailed per se, like you don't see detailed d**ks, but it's there and doesn't leave anything to the imagination.
Yes, there's noncon... A lot of it. Not between the two main characters, only for one of them (the omega *of course*). Like I said above in the general section, things in the plot seem to only happen to show how abused the omega character is. Two scenes show how the omega's younger brother wants to r**e him and tries to. We also see a gang r**e. Three of the classmates lure the omega and force themselves on him, and take pictures during it, and record audio. Again, nothing is left to the imagination. It's all there. It's a long scene, and it's disturbing and so triggery. I knew it was there by reading other reviews, but I didn't expect it to this extent. I have a problem by people saying this was an attempted r**e. No, it was r**e.
There's no warnings anywhere in the summary or note at the beginning of these scenes and themes. I really wish they had done this.
There are other things like vomiting and eating disorders. That would have been great to know beforehand.
The only worldbuilding there is to show how this one omega has had it hard. That's it. That's the plot and the worldbuilding we get. With omegaverse the worldbuilding is so interesting to see and there's nothing here.

I saw the book cover and read the plot but somehow missed that this was an Omegaverse story, which is something I’m normally not really interested in.

This is probably not the typical Omegaverse story, and I was able to read it for the story and the characters, without really thinking about the Omegaverse aspects of the story too much.

Miyabi has sadly suffered from abuse by his family when he lived at home, because Miyabi is an Omega and they think Omegas are less worthy. He was eventually kicked out from home because of their hatred and ignorance, and since then he has been left to take care of himself while he did everything he could to suppress and keep the fact that he’s an Omega hidden from the world around him.

Until one day a rich Alpha named Haruto transfered to his high school, and everything changed. I think “Alphas in most Omegaverse stories as well as people who are described as such in real life honestly are bad, and selfish people.

Miyabi notices that Haruto is an Alpha right away because he gets affected by it, so he tries to do everything he can to stay away from him by being arrogant and even rude to him. While Haruto is nothing but kind to him, which then turns into him wanting to support Miyabi and take care of him when he notices that he’s struggling with things. Haruto is so sweet to Miyabi, and by supporting him and being there for him, it seems like he’s trying to show him that there’s nothing wrong with being an Omega and that he’s just as worthy as everyone else.

Slowly Miyabi starts to accept and get used to Haruto always being by his side and even wants him to be there, which then turns into him wanting Haruto as his mate, while Miyabi has been head over heels about him the whole time.

Haruto is such a kind and sweet person, and definitely a positive representation of how Alphas could be. Even if it’s just a story, it makes you happy that Haruto comes into Miyabi’s life, and turns it around for the better by showing him care, kindness and affection. When they decide to become mates, it seems like they were meant to be together.

💀 CW: attempted rape, sexual assault, violence, sex scenes, verbal abuse & bullying.

Vol. 1 / Vol. 2

Bueno.

So this was my introduction to the Omegaverse. I only started reading yaoi manga last year, and I had no idea this was even a thing. I literally stopped reading in the middle of this book to google alphas and omegas in manga. Thus, I was today years old when I learned about the Omegaverse. I feel so old sometimes.

To be completely honest, I don't know exactly how I feel about this subgenre. Thank goodness the first book I happened to buy was one where the alpha is kind. I like to go into stories completely blind, so I don't typically read too much about the plot. And sometimes, if it's a book that someone I know has read, and they tend to like a lot of the same books I do, then I might pick it up and not read anything about it before just starting it.

When one of the human characters literally goes "into heat" in this book I had to stop and google it. I'm a big time horror reader, even though I have mostly been reading manga this year. (I'm also a Gemini, and I sort of have an all or nothing personality.) Sometimes I just want to dig in as deep as I can into whatever interests me at the time, and so I'm sincerely considering making this a manga only year. However, I'm quick to change my mind, and pretty much do things on a whim, so if at some point this year I want to start reading novels again, I'm sure I can make the switch without even thinking much about it. Anyway, to get back to what I was saying, werewolves and other supernatural animals are my jam, and suddenly I'm reading a book with very human characters that are displaying the characteristics of werewolves and animals. As you can imagine, I was confused.

So after a deep dive on the internet I now not only understand the Omegaverse, but its origins as well. (I'm also deeply curious and thorough.) I just can't decide if this type of yaoi is for me. I get the appeal, and if you love this sort of thing, I think that's totally cool, I just don't know yet how I really feel about it.

Never Let Go won a BL award in 2023 in Japan so I knew then that I couldn’t possibly miss it. Even the fact that it was an omegaverse didn’t make me falter. I’m not a big fan of this BL genre, but ‘Never Let Go was magical. It was also unexpectedly sweet. Nothing like any other omegaverse manga I’ve ever read.

Haruto is an alpha who transferred to a new school which makes the student council president, Miyabi Kitahara, VERY uncomfortable. He absolutely looses his cool when he’s around Haruto. This is because he’s under a spell of his strong pheromones and even an overdose on suppressants can’t stop it which Miyabi hates with vengeance because all of his life he tried to forget he’s an omega because even his own family made him feel miserable because of that. It was ingrained into him that being an omega is lowly and humiliating, and that’s why he couldn’t accept Haruto, a rich alpha kid, being nice to him.

There were a few moments that made me feel “uncomfortable, but, thankfully, they didn’t happen between the main characters. And once Miyabi saw that Haru was not a predator but the one who had a genuine interest in him, he let his guard down and allowed himself to be the real version of himself

Damn, it’s a good mix of adorable and heartbreaking, and mangaka already promised a continuation of the story which I will be looking forward to 😊

3.5 Stars

NEVER LET GO was a heavier manga, emotionally, with an interesting storyline that move a bit quickly for my liking and should have been a single volume title. I think the story ended pretty well and answered any questions I had.

I did like how much the one character had to fight to be accepted by the other very jaded (justifiably so) main character. My heart broke for him and the experiences he had growing up. I'm glad he finally had someone to help him and show him that he is worth the love.

What took me a while to get used to was the artwork. I don't know what it was, but something about this art style just felt...very AI to me. Like, it lacked personality? Even now as I write this, I'm still put off by that art work. I know a lot of people probably love it, but it felt too...perfect?

Anyway, enjoyed the (cheesy) story! MAYBE I'll check out the second volume when it comes out!

Happy reading!

One thing you have to be ready for when reading omegaverse stories is that you need to tolerate some pretty sensitive topics that are typical in these stories.

Surprisingly, I ended up liking it. When I decided to start reading, I honestly didn't have any expectations. After all, I'd read some other omegaverse mangas and liked them, so I tried to keep my expectations in check in case I didn't end up liking this one.

Our main character, Miyabi, has had a life full of tragedy since he was a kid, which made me frustrated and really sad because his first wound came from his family, who should have been his safe place. Plus, his brother's annoying attempts to harass him made me even more frustrated.

But luckily, Miyabi meets our main lead, Haruto, who is like a walking green flag, haha. I hope the characters stay consistent in the second volume.

Overall, I enjoyed this manga, though the flashbacks made me cry a bit.

Do you want a solid Omegaverse that’s actually consensual? This feature is very sweet, but at the same time dramatic and thought-provoking. It’s a little heavy for beginners, but a good story nonetheless!

I love seeing soft alphas in these. I was eating good, for real. So if a sort of enemies (though not really) to lovers ft. omegaverse is your jam, this manga does not disappoint!

The pacing was great, the art was gorgeous, and the backstory was handled really well. Again, it did something I hadn’t seen before in these while sticking to what I know and love, so it felt pretty refreshing. It’s a 10 for me.

Who is this manga for
This sweet omegaverse is for fans of an Omegaverse that’s more on the consensual side between the main leads. If you don’t mind the volume being a transition piece, this manga will likely be well-received by fans of the genre!

This is one of the better omegaverse manga I've read so far, though it does follow some common tropes with omegas painted as lusting after alphas and alphas being the stronger and more desirable secondary gender. Miyabi hates what he is, to the point that he's tried to hide it and doesn't even wear a collar at school and tries to suppress his heats continually, even though when Haruto first transfers to the school, he points out how all omegas wear collars and their heats are strictly regulated. Haruto is one of the rare ones that honestly cares about Miyabi, and while he clearly does have instincts and is attracted to him, refuses to act on anything until they're on the same page and it's what Miyabi truly wants. While it does have it's dark spots in the story, overall it's rather wholesome in the terms of both omegaverse stories and high school romances.

Based on the cover and the high school setting, I was not expecting the level of angst and trigger-warningable content in this volume. A bit too much whump for my tastes. It's supposed to be a love story, but I just found it sad. The assault and the general portrayal of how awful it would be to be an omega in this universe just left a bad taste in my mouth.

I also didn't really see the chemistry between the two characters. Sure, Ichijo is kind and princely and helps Kitahara out, but I'm not sure why beyond his general protective instincts and compassion? Kitahara spends the first part of the story being a massive asshole (for understandable, but also unfair reasons). And then Kitihara- is he only attracted to Ichijo because he's being weirdly nice for no real reason? I don't know. I think this story just doesn't resonate with me.

Hopefully other readers will enjoy it more.
