Stranded #2

Trial by Fire

Rate this book
Sequel to the New York Times bestseller STRANDED, seen on The Today Show, Rachael Ray, and Kelly and Michael.

From the multi-Emmy Award winning host of Survivor and the New York Times bestselling co-author of Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life comes a fantastic new middle grade series!

They thought it couldn't get any worse.
They were wrong.

Being shipwrecked on a jungle island in the middle of the South Pacific was bad enough. But now that Carter, Vanessa, Buzz and Jane have lost their boat - and almost everything on board - to another violent storm, it's like starting over. That means finding food and shelter, making fire for the first time, dealing with the wild boars that roam the island - and of course, figuring out how to get along (and not kill each other in the process). Survival is no individual sport in a place like this, but there's only one way to learn that. The hard way.

In the second Stranded book, things get worse for the Benson-Diaz kids as the wreck of their boat, the not-so-lucky Lucky Star finally sinks, leaving them without shelter and supplies on the deserted "Nowhere Island."

Only a book aimed at pre-teens would put a nine-year-old (and siblings) in such danger. The kids really get put through the ringer in this one. Unlike in other deserted island survival books, they can barely start a fire, can't collect shellfish or catch a fish, and building a shelter is hard. It's a surprisingly realistic book, especially given its target audience.

Personal Response: I like this book because it is about exploring an island that they become stranded on and looking for materials to survive with. It is also really fun to read because of all the stuff they do in the book.

Plot: Vanessa, Jane, Carter, and Buzz are stranded on a Jungle Island in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. The trip was supposed to be a fun trip for their parents' honeymoon in Hawaii. Vanessa and Buzz are siblings and Cater and Jane are siblings, so they don't get along because they are step brothers. They were going to a fishing trip with their uncle for them to learn how to get along together. Their shelter, named the Lucky Star, got lost in the storm. During the storm they found a cave but don't know what's inside of it. They were suffering from the chilly weather at night and trying to look for a way to make a fire. They heard a really high pitched noise deep inside the cave. Everything started to shake, and they were trampled by hogs. They found water inside the cave, but the water was contaminated by all the bats. Carter became sick from drinking the water, he felt better in a day but still felt weak and couldn't really help much but he pushed through the pain. They decided to move to the beach because the hogs came back and attacked them and wasted their only flare to scare them away. They built a house out of bamboo sticks and found out how to make a fire with a piece of glass that they found in the lagoon. They ended up finding the lucky star and found flares, blankets, jackets, pillows, pans and a can of food. They started to cook snails and ate them after their food ran out. Vanessa tried to put some sticks in the fire but accidentally burnt the dry leaves on top of the bamboo house and lost some of their resources. After that happened Vanessa I guess felt bad and ran away. She found skeletons of human beings somewhere in the island that she never explored. To be continued... The main theme about this book is “teamwork they need to work together to get things done and work as a team.

Recommendation: I recommend this book to anyone who likes survival books and that like to figure out things.

Personal Response-I thought this book was alright. The book made every little thing that happens drag on. I enjoy reading stories about survival. This book has a lot of that in it. The story was also action packed.

Plot- This book is about four new step siblings that survived a boat crash and found themselves deserted on an island in the middle of the South Pacific. This book seemed very unrealistic. The boat that sank in the Pacific Ocean somehow washed to shore at the same island all the kids were on. After seeing the boat washed up on shore, they went to investigate. They walked up on the deck and saw that everything that was there is now gone or destroyed. They went up to the main part of the ship and found an old radio. The radio was soaked with water and did not have power. Then Jane saw something familiar, it's the SAT phone that is on every ship for emergencies. She grabbed the phone and saw it had a little life left on the battery.

Characterization- There are four main characters in this book. Two of them were brother and sister and the other two were step brother sister. They are on vacation, sailing the sea, when a huge storm comes and wrecked the boat. Carter, Vanessa, Jane, and Buzz were their names. Carter and Vanessa are brother and sister. Jane and Buzz are also brother and sister. Together they all make a good team. Carter is 13 and the oldest out of the four. Buzz plays video games and knows a little about survival. Jane and Vanessa no nothing about survival. They are normal 10 and 11 year old girls who spend time doing their makeup and texting.

Theme-The main theme was man vs nature. The theme fits this book because four kids were going against nature to survive. The way those four kids put their heads together and were able to live longer than a few days was amazing to me. It's amazing what humans can do when death can come at any second. They all hated each other at times, but in order for survival they would have to get along.

Setting- Stranded Trail by Fire took place on an undiscovered island in the South Pacific. The island had thrown many surprises at them. Wild boars coming in stampedes chasing them and venomous animals. They describe the weather as hot during the day and 50 degrees at night. They had bad storms that were knocking over trees and creating mudslides. The book takes place during present day.

Recommendation- I recommend this book to any middle school that like the outdoors. I do not recommend this book to anyone older than 14 because it is written for small kids, yet the book is the size of an average high school level book. I would suggest this book to boys. Because boys tend to like the outdoors more than girls. I gave this book a three out of five stars.

Personal Response: I thought this book was okay. The author made a lot of small things go on for a long time, but I really enjoyed it. I enjoy survival books. This book was a lot of fun to read. The story was very “action packed.

Plot: The book is about for children who are step siblings that crashed their boat. They happened to crash onto a deserted island all by themselves. The boat sank and washed on shore with survivors which is odd. This book is very unrealistic. Everything they had on the boat was either gone or destroyed. They happen to find an old radio in the main part of the vessel. Jane, one of the children, remembered that every boat has a SAT phone. She grabbed the phone and noticed that it had battery life left.

Characterization: There were four main characters in this book. Two of them were step brother and sister and the other two were just brother and sister. They were all on vacation sailing the sea when a huge storm came through. The names of the four children were Carter (13), Vanessa (11), Jane (10), and Buzz (11). Both boys knew little things about survival. The girls did not know much, because all they did was text and play with each others hair.

Setting: The setting of this book was on a deserted island in the South Pacific. This story took place during present day. The island threw a lot of surprises at them. There were wild boars, venomous amphibians, and angry mammals ready to strike at any given moment. The weather was hot during the day and 50 degrees Fahrenheit at night. They had a lot of rain, which caused mudslides. It was very dangerous.

Recommendation: I would not recommend this book to anyone older than 18 or anyone younger than four. I really liked this book and would recommend it to middle school and high school boys, because the characters are all boys. I give this book a solid three out of five.

This book follows the storyline of four kids named Carter, Vanessa, Buzz, and Jane. Here's how the story pans out. The four kids were on a ship and as they were on the ship a deadly storm came through and shipwrecked the kids on an island with no food or anything. So they had to start out fresh with no food, water or shelter. The only problem is... is getting along with each other.

I liked this book because it had the right kind of adventure that I like. I look forward to reading the rest of this series. I also hope that more of these books will come out soon in the future. Overall this book is really good, I would recommend to anyone who likes action and adventure books.

I enjoyed reading this book that was full of action, suspense, and a little drama. Being the second book in the series, Stranded 2 definitely continues the action and suspense found in Stranded 1. The author Jeff Probst, shows the kids looking for rescue to get off the island they've been stuck on for days. The characters basically have to start over after a violent storm comes and washes their boat (full of supplies) away. The kids learn many lessons on "Nowhere" island like how to get along and not kill each other in the process of survival.
My favorite character in the book was Jane because no one thought she could do much to help but she proved them wrong. The book was very realistic in events that happened, so the characters felt so real to me as I read the book. I felt as if I was in the book with the characters. Being a action book, many parts of the book were really suspenseful and left me guessing what was going to happen next. My absolute favorite part of the book was (spoiler alert) when the kids found the boat that had been taken by the violent storm and built an underwater zip line to get to the boat and get supplies fast. This scene left me guessing if the kids were going to get supplies fast enough before disaster happened.
I wish the end was more happy and joyful than it turned out to be. Sometimes throughout the book I found it hard to like Carter because he kept making easy decisions a lot harder to make. I'd recommend this book to readers who love action and suspense in their books. You would love this book and the whole series because it is action packed and has some drama as well. Overall, I loved this book and would definitely recommend it.

"The rain outside poured down, but the sounds in the cave seemed to bounce off one another and amplify. And that's when he heard it. A soft rustling was coming from deeper inside. Something was moving around back there. It sent a fresh wave of goose bumps down his arms."

The Sequel to Jeff Probst's book Stranded, Trial by Fire continues the adventure of the four siblings, Vanessa & Buzz, and Carter & Jane. They have been shipwrecked and stranded on a deserted island. Their parents are newly married and the two sets of siblings were on a sailing cruise to get to know each other better. Now, they are in this crazy situation and are forced to work together to survive.

This book begins where the first one left off, with a huge storm dragging their boat and all their food and gear off to sea. The kids attempt to find shelter in a cave, only to realize that something is already there. The kids face this and many other obstacles as they continue their adventure.

This book will appeal to young reluctant readers, especially those that like adventure. There are loads of dangerous situations that the kids have to find ways to escape. Each child finds they have a strength that contributes to the group's survival. They learn new things about themselves and each other.

Very enjoyable book and short. I finished it in one night. :)

Trial By Fire is the second in a series for middle school age kids by Jeff Probst of Survivor fame. The series follows 4 children from a blended family (a sister/brother from each parent) who are sailing with their uncle and friend off the coast of Hawaii, while their parents honeymoon. The trip is meant as a way for the kids to bond, working out the difficulties (personality/attitudes) of blending into a new family. Halfway through their trip and some 900ish miles from Hawaii, a sudden storm finds the kids shipwrecked and separated from the adults on board. Trial By Fire is the second book of three following the kids and their efforts to get rescued. The theme of this book is fire and light. Fire is needed to survive and quite possibly what can save them. It can also be their demise. This story also ends with a cliffhanger...we have to wait until the third book in the series is released to see what new things lurk on the island and if they are rescued..

I thought the book flowed well and the writing appropriate for middle school aged kids, but will appeal to adults as well. This may be the new Swiss Family Robinson in the vein of Survivor. I'm hoping this series fares better than Probst's talk show.

I'm giving it 3 stars, because it was less boring. I guess I'm more into the kind of deserted on island like the hit tv show, LOST. The entire 3/4 of the book was about the kids trying to make fire and getting beaten up by hogs. Yes, this one did develop the characters a but more and it had more action. I would recommend the authors work on the plot in the third one, and make it move forward some. I think that some of this one wasn't need.

Although I say this, it is a fantastic book for ages 8-11 if your interested in survival. I really enjoy survival books, but this one didn't capture my attention that well.

I think this one was harder to put down than the first. I found myself reaching for it every spare moment.

Trial by Fire picked up exactly where Stranded left off. The excitement and suspense continues and builds as Carter, Vanessa, Buzz, and Jane now have to find food as well as shelter when the Lucky Star is washed away in yet another storm. While trying to start a fire, they must deal with wild boars and bats.

I can't wait to start the third on and find out how everything turns out.

Stranded 2, Trial by Fire by Jeff Probst is the sequel to The New York Times bestseller, Stranded 1. The book is an excellent novel about four kids who crash their boat into an island in the middle of the South Pacific. Without any lifeboat and very few supplies, they begin to walk around exploring the deserted island. As night begins to fall, they realize that they need to find food, shelter, water and to build a fire in order to survive. As they start their search, they come across wild boars and these extremely dangerous creatures, which roam the entire island. While trying to keep their distance from the boars and attempt to find a way to get back home, they hear a plane in the distance. As they run up the cliff to light a fire in order to signal the plane, they fall into a 200-foot hole. They struggle to decide how to climb out, and they eventually hoist themselves up through thick brush and tangled vines, but the plane has disappeared. While the four kids continue to search for any inhabitants, they stumble come across a shipwreck. As they come upon this discovery: “Vanessa staggered back as she did, a fuller realization came to her. Whoever those people had been, they were trapped here on Nowhere Island, too. This ending quote keeps you guessing and builds suspense about what will happen next. Luckily, there is a sequel to this book that will surely be as adventurous as this novel. Stranded 2 was published on July 13, 2013, and featured on The Today Show as a highly recommended book. I give the book four out of five stars because it kept me on the edge of your seat and was full of action and intrigue. The reason I held off on giving it five stars is that some of the descriptions lingered and could have been shorter and more exciting. Overall, though, the book was fabulous, and I look forward to reading the sequel!

Ay, ay, ay! Talk about things going from bad to worse! Only it's more like bad to worse, to even worse, to slightly better, back to even worse, then to absolutely awful! There were numerous times when I reacted out loud--usually something along the lines of "no, don't do it!" or "get out of there NOW!" And even though I was usually right (and they usually didn't listen to me), that didn't make me any less invested in the story or the characters. We're starting to see some little bits of growth, although some characters are still plenty stubborn about it. (By that, I mean growth in relationships and attitudes, not growth in personal strength and resilience, which they're all developing in spades.) I was particularly impressed with the way Jane stood up to Carter in the matter of electing a leader. And I really love the fact that Buzz doesn't get all his ideas from movies and video games; he's got an excellent head on his shoulders, even if he doesn't have Carter's strength and experience. Speaking of which, Carter still hasn't lost my vote for the one needing most to get his act together. Not that I don't understand and sympathize, but...there it is. ;)

Since the sinking of the boat in the last book, the kids are pretty much back to square one as far as figuring out how to survive on the island. In fact, thanks to a few specific calamities, they're often left with less than they started with. As in the first book, I appreciated the realistic feel of their problems, their solutions, and their mistakes. And definitely looking forward to seeing how everything is resolved in the final book!

4.5 stars

Content--mentions of vomiting and needing to use the bathroom; mentions of blood and wounds; children in dangerous situations; arguing and insults; mention of cursing (no words)

This book definitely increases the pacing of the series. While the first book spent a lot of time laying the groundwork, this one gets straight into the action. It's much more engaging right from the start. I enjoyed following the kids' actions on the island and considering how I might respond in similar situations (and considering what Survivor has taught me about them).

My biggest complaint would be that there may be too many obstacles. The book drags out the suspense, and I'm not expecting any easy solutions, but it seems like the authors have put a lot of thought into how they can make every situation go wrong. Every step forward is met with at least one backward. I can see how that would make it more enjoyable for some readers, but the constant disappointment can get to be a bit much. Part of why I enjoyed books like The Swiss Family Robinson and The Mysterious Island was that the characters were able to accomplish so much to make their islands liveable.

Overall, it's a good continuation of the series, and I'm interested to see where this all leads.

Suppose you needed take a ride on a sailboat and something sudden happened. A thirteen year old,two eleven year old and a nine year old all stranded. How were they going to survive being stranded out there. Having no grown-ups around to deal with them so they need to deal with themselves. They should have been protected, anything could fly up. They weren't teenagers yet experienced this by themselves.

They needed to experience hazardous things that could've brought about them their lives. Creatures and tempests anything that could execute them. No rest at all pondering what will occur next. Not being with your family for the longest needs to hurt. Having musings like if will pass on or not. It wasn't a game any longer it was something genuine, more like a bad dream. Everything you could consider is making it out alive.

Cautioning: Spoilers that will ruin your life

Setting: They are on a wilderness island stranded from a shipwreck , they have a considerable measure coming their direction. Hazardous creatures attempting to get them. Backwoods flames could begin and smolder them gravely. Discovering nourishment and asylum could be hard for them however they ought to be brilliant children.

Hero: Vanessa is the hero. She is thirteen years of age, the most established out of 4 children. She truly kept close by and dealt with them like a developed woman and what she should do. She battled somewhat all through yet despite everything she figured out how to take them through it more.

Enemy: no rival

Struggle: Their most serious issue was attempting to get protected. They needed to endure creatures that attempted to hurt them. The tempests were additionally misleading them. Getting hurt backed them off as well, you must be watchful were you ventured you could sprain or break a leg, with your leg like that you wouldn't make it an anyplace.

Rising activity: Jane was getting assaulted by something. Vanessa shouted help Buzz needed to consider something that was his sister getting hurt. He searched for the Ax yet found a flare.

Peak: carter heard the sound of a plane. He battled attempting to be in sight of the plane. He smoldered another flare however it was past the point of no return. They shouted truly uproarious yet it was at that point heading far from the island.

Determination: Vanessa attempted her hardest to get them out of there however there was no chance.

Denouement: Vanessa found another watercraft and other water yet that needed to hold up. She needed to tell the others what she had saw.

Paramount quotes: "NO!" "Return!" "STOP PLEASE!" they were attempting to get back to the plane yet it was at that point past the point of no return.

General this book was great i enjoyed how they never surrendered, they continued onward.

Stranded 2 is the total opposite of the first book. It has the same characters and ideas with a different story line. The four children have been shipwrecked on an island for a long time. They have just started to settle in, so they decide to try and find a way to signal the outside world. They struggle to find a suitable plan, but they soon stumble upon the idea of fire. Will this plan work, or will the kids be stuck on the island forever?
As a busy high school student, it can be hard to find the time and motivation to sit and read. However, this book totally changed that for me. I read almost half the book in one sitting because I couldn’t peel myself away. I couldn’t go to sleep until I figured out what the kids were planning. Also, I felt like the story line of the book was well thought out. The kids were fighting one moment, and they were getting along the next minute. There were so many unexpected twists, and they all kept me intrigued for my journey through the book.

The part of the book that I liked the most was when they found their ship that they thought sunk to the bottom of the ocean in the crash. The reason I liked this part of the book the most is that everyone was depressed before because they are abandoned on an island, but now their all so happy because there’s so much gear and supplies that they need on the ship. After they found the ship everyone was so happy because it would make things so much easier trying to survive. The author did a really nice job on how he would keep you hooked on a certain part of the book to keep you wanting to keep reading. The author could have done better on the ending leading it to the next book in the series of Stranded. I would recommend this book to anyone because it is a great book to keep you hooked on the next event in it. You never want to quit reading especially when you're to a good part in the book when they are at the campsite and ……...

Vanessa, Buzz, Carter, and Jane have just lost the boat in another storm. It was taken out to sea along with their last hoped of getting the satellite phone to recharge. They now have to make a shelter, find food, find water, and build a fire. Will they be able to do all of this and keep themselves alive?

I really do like these books. The action is intense even though the characters are just children. I cannot believe how many problems they continue to run into while trying to survive on this island. I am enjoying how the dynamic between the siblings is beginning to shift. It is no longer theirs and mine. It is all becoming mine.

The only thing I wish was different is that the books were a little longer. These books literally take about 4 hours to listen to. It goes by very quickly.

PG- siblings arguing and then cooperating to come to a solution. Diving under the ocean. Large cut on hand. Wild boar intruders.

Carter, Vanessa, Buzz and Jane are still on the deserted island learning how to get along and how to survive. Being forced to work together is still a struggle but they realize they have to....to survive. Having found shelter in a cave they think they're safe but turns out they're not. They are lucky to escape with their lives as they flee the shelter. Building shelter on the beach is the next step. They gather bamboo and construct a lean-to. Making a fire has become all important but proves very difficult to do. But they work at it. Finding water is another thing they struggle to do. The basic necessities of life are all that matter right now. They have to look at life differently to make it through this. There is one good thing, they found their boat and may be able to salvage things from it. Each day brings more obstacles with little hope but they cling to the nugget of hope.

Jeff Probst, the guy that I see on TV every week for Survivor, continues this series with even more survival techniques, and splints in the family. When the four meet new survival challenges including wild boars, their supplies being at the bottom of the sea, and fighting in the family, they must come together and figure out how to progress in this book. This has so much imagery and cleverness to it, I really loved it. When I think of this book, I think of Jane being suspended by a rope cutting off a branch of coconuts! And that ending though....I can not wait to read the next one!

Five stars read for sure! If you loved Stranded, pick up Trial by Fire!

This book picks up right where the last book left off and continued the fun survival facts. This book was pretty much everything I wanted the first book to be, but it hadn't gotten to this point. It's a children's book, but it's written with a realism that belies the youthful nature of the text. This book also gets into some of the scenarios that happen in Survivor, just not in a game scenario. All of this gives a bit more insight into how Probst looks at how the show is designed. Pretty fascinating book.

Stranded is the first book in this middle grade series, then Trial by Fire, and Survivor is the last novel.
Four kids set sail after their parents get married. They end up shipwrecked. Each child brings their own unique strengths and weaknesses.
These novels can teach great survival skills, ideas, and that working together is so much better than being alone.
I loved the idea that anyone can use their brains to solve problems and stay alive. Great message and not scary.
We own book one and I listened to them on Hoopla.
Cw: sickness, dead remains (not gory).

I read the book Stranded 2: Trial by Fire by Jeff Probst. Imagine being stranded on an island for over a week now, eating only snails and having limited water, sharing with four people, one sick. The Lucky Star, their boat that washed up ashore “Nowhere Island with their only food, flares and other supplies, has now washed back up not too far a way, a short swim, with canned goods that will taste like the best thing they’ve ever eaten, considering anything is better than eating snails. Read the book to find out what happens (their is a first and third book too).

The book takes place on an island that they washed up on a little over a week ago, frequently called “Nowhere Island by the main characters Venessa, Buzz, Jane and Carter. The conflict is that it is hard to find food and water, and they have to share it between the four of them. The theme is to work as a team because when they wanted to get a shelter made and a fire started, they all went out the find bamboo for the shelter, and all helped make it. When they finally made a fire from a piece of glass and the sun, they took shifts during the night, tending the fire so it wouldn’t burn out. The genre is realistic fiction because this could happen in real life, but it is pretty rare.

There was some great conflict in the book. One example was internal conflict. There was an example of man vs self because Venessa ran off after she accidentally let the shelter catch on fire, causing everything to burn, feeling terrible. An external conflict is man vs man because during the first couple days they were on Nowhere Island, Venessa and Carter were fighting about who should be the leader, both nominating themselves.

My opinion of the book was that is was very entertaining. It was a page turner and each book gets even better.

Everyone would enjoy this book because it isn’t too long, and the vocabulary wasn’t too challenging. There is both boys and girls in the book, so it is pretty gender neutral. I think this book is best for kids ages 10-14.

I found this book second hand. It’s a sequel but even so the plot was easy to pick up. I wish all the books were consolidated though because this one just left you with a cliffhanger.

In any case, it’s a good story. Hard to put down. Language fine for kids except for a “shut up. Blended family situation but it isn’t really dwelled on.

Survival fiction. Overall a fine read now if only I could find the other books second hand somewhere.

Definitely geared for the 9-12 age range, but still a fun suspenseful book. You can't help but root for these kids that are stranded on a deserted island after a boat crash. You feel crushed with every set back they encounter on their quest for survival and a way to be rescued. This book, just as the first, ended in a cliff hanger so we now must wait for the third book from the library.
