Fearless Hope: A Novel

Rate this book
When an Amish woman falls for the New York crime writer who buys her family farm, she must decide whether to follow the longings of her heart or the rules of her faith.

When Hope Yoder loses her husband, she is left trying to support her two small children—and one on the way—however she can. She ends up taking a job as a part-time housekeeper for the Englisch man who has bought the farm that once belonged to her family.

Logan Parker is a bestselling crime fiction writer from New York City who accompanies his fiancée on a trip to Holmes County, Ohio, but the trip takes a strange turn when he sees an Amish farmhouse for sale. Intrigued by a strong sense of familiarity, he enters the house and is overcome with a feeling of deep peace. He’s never been to Ohio before, but something in this house feels right, and he purchases the farm to use as a retreat. Something about the peacefulness of the house frees him from the crippling writer’s block that threatens to ruin his career, and something about the quiet Amish woman who comes to clean his home makes him less and less excited about returning to New York and the woman he is supposed to marry.

Slowly, Logan and Hope are drawn together, and when they discover that they share a strange past, they must decide how that affects their future. Will Hope overcome her fear of embracing love again?

I live only a few miles from a flourishing Amish community and am blessed to count many Old Order Amish as friends. Love Finds You In Sugarcreek, Ohio is a natural outgrowth of my on-going fascination with these valiant, flawed people who struggle to live their lives according to their interpretation of the Bible. Once, when I apologized for asking so many questions while researching this book, an Amish father told me that I could ask anything I wanted. “Nothing is forbidden, he said. He told me that he wanted my book to be accurate. I was thrilled when his family read it and gave me their enthusiastic nod of approval.

Our family, however, also lived for many years in Michigan. My father, a sawyer, told me stories he had heard from old timber men who had cut the fabled giant pine in the Saginaw Valley. Visiting museums and reading about the years directly after the Civil War, when Michigan became the lumber capitol of the world, became a hobby. I was delighted when Revell Publishing allowed me to revisit that era by writing The Measure Of Katie Calloway.

There are many other books on their way—both Amish and historical. Please know that each one is a labor of love from me to you.

To God be all the glory, forever.

Serena

Life sometimes offers us a different path than the one we wanted for our lives. Sometimes we are forced to face some of those challenges head on and wait to see what the outcome will be believing of course, that God knows best. In the latest novel from Serena B. Miller, Fearless Hope, offers the readers a different way of looking at hope in the most challenging of situations.

For Logan Parker who lives in New York as a best selling author, he has come against the proverbial and dreaded writer's block. Known for his suspense novels, he has been struggling since the loss of his wife and can't see to find the light beyond the end of the bottle. His publisher has given him the last ultimatum since turning in less than stellar best sellers in his last two novels, either find where you got off track or you won't have a contract with his publishing firm in the future. He has a deadline to complete a novel and if it isn't along the lines of what they have been expecting, he will be fired.

When he takes a trip to the Amish country of Holmes County, Ohio with his financèe, an interior designer looking for quality furniture, he happens upon a home for sale that provides him with an unknown serenity. As if he has been there before. Thinking it would offer him a respite from the rigors of New York and hopefully provide a break to his writer's block, he purchases the house. He can't understand why he feels as if he has been there before, but his fiancèe Marla, a strikingly beautiful women whose only focus is on what she can get out of life thinks it's a complete waste of time.

Logan buys the home against Marla's wishes and while he opts to stay in the house in Ohio, she heads back to New York. Left with an empty house in need of filling, Logan begins to shop around town for things to fill the home. While browsing a local store, he finds Hope Yoder, who is looking for work as a housekeeper. She is struggling to find her own sense of purpose sense losing her husband Titus in a farming accident that has left her with two young children and pregnant with her third child. She is hoping to find something that will allow her to bring her children to work and one that will allow her to work until she has the baby. Logan is willing to give her a job seeing as he is in need of someone who can cook for him while he tries to find himself. They both understand that nothing can come between the two of them since Logan is English and Hope is Amish. Hope is more than surprised to learn that Logan has bought her father's house and farm and it more than excited to help bring it back to it's former glory. But either of them be able to keep their hearts from finding a path different than the one they have in mind?

I received Fearless Hope by Serena B. Miller compliments of Howard Books, a division of Simon and Schuster Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed are strictly my own. I love novels that combine different genre's and in this case, it's contemporary romance alongside Amish romance. I love seeing how Logan and Hope try to work around the differences in their faith while trying to get past their own stages of grief having both lost their spouses. What inspires me most about Hope's character is that her actions speak louder than anything she says and it's true what the Bible states that we can be won over by our actions rather than our words with others. What an inspirational story of hope among loss that is geared to encourage us all that life doesn't end when we think it should and God has a plan in mind for all of us. .This one easily rates a 5 out of 5 stars.

"Fearless Hope" 3rd book by Serena B Miller

I’ve read the first two books in this series, An Uncommon Grace and Hidden Mercies, and now Fearless Hope that does not disappoint. Like the first two we are we are again in Holmes County Ohio.
So happy to be back again with these characters and to add a few more.
This story has a mystery thread that runs through it and reading the end will be a surprise .

Hope is a young mother with two children and loves her husband but when he buys a bull she knows there is such danger and tries to get him to take it back. He is the man of the house and she must accept his wishes even when she is so afraid for him.
Not long after buying -the dangerous bull stampeeded and her husband died. It was so hard once she was a widow and being amish she knew she would have to accept help for awhile from "Her People".
When she finds she is pregnant again it is a mixed blessing and she decides to get a job to earn monies to help her growing family.
Logan Parker is a writer and feels he is about to have a melt-down if something does not happen ,his writing is all but stopped and he has obligations to finish another story. While driving in amish area one day he sees a beautiful house for sale and he gets a de-ja-vu moment and decides to stop and view it. Walking through the house the feeling of peace is so strong that he knows he wants to come here and write.
Soon he is owner of the farm that used to be in the family of Hope.
another few months and Logan is living there and Hope is his housekeeper. Such a strange thing to happen.
The people in the area like Logan and soon start telling him stories of their time in the war,he begins to write a book from their stories and his heart is opening to the people.
The amish are such open kind loving people that Logan feels such peace now living in Ohio amish country.
As time goes by Logan begins to have strong feeling for Hope and her children and he tries to stay gone while she is in the house cleaning so nothing will happen ,as he is "English" and she an amish widow with children. Nothing can ever come from these feelings...right?
Serena has put a very unusual ending to this book that you must read the story ,I have enjoyed reading all three of these books but this one surely ends it well.

Fearless Hope was a great conclusion to these Amish books from Serena B. Miller. I've truly enjoyed getting to know these characters and appreciated how characters from the previous books (An Uncommon Grace, Hidden Mercies) were in this one. :)

I loved the main characters and the growth Logan went through. I kind of guessed the twist, but still enjoyed it and the way everything played out. Forgiveness was a strong theme.

All in all, Fearless Hope was well worth the read. I recommend it to fans of the genre and you don't need to read the other books first in order to enjoy this one.

I'm a big fan of TV's Castle as well as Hallmark's The Shunning movies and I couldn't help thinking as Serena B. Miller's latest novel, Fearless Hope, played out in my head, that the book was kind of a mash-up of the two. He isn't working with cops, but writer Logan Parker definitely has that Castle-like charm going that's hard not to love. He has a lot of pain and heartache of his own that he's hiding underneath that charming veneer. Hope Yoder, the Plain woman who comes to depend on Logan's employment to be dependent from her community's charity after her husband's sudden death, is as one might expect --kindhearted, loving, and a little unsure of the new stranger who has taken ownership of her family's former farm. As Logan and Hope grow closer, they learn secrets about their pasts that deepen their connection.

As per the usual, Serena's Amish story captured my full attention. Once I picked this one up and opened the front cover, I couldn't stop reading. I don't know what it is, perhaps it's her ability to craft a world so familiar yet so different from our own or her ability to bring to life characters who are so dynamic and interesting that they could be real that make this and most of her other stories so readable. Once you're sucked in, it's definitely tough to stop reading these books. Even though each of her Amish books are loosely related, they can be read on their own.

Fearless Hope, while very good, is not my favorite of the series (that award goes to Hidden Mercies) just because the last few chapters seemed rushed. I wished that their story got a little more time to develop, especially where Logan was concerned. I felt that he went from one very involved, complicated situation to another with Hope. However, Fearless Hope absolutely drew me in and by the end, left me with that warm fuzzy feeling that is always necessary when reading stories in this genre. If you enjoy Amish fiction I definitely suggest this book as well as the other two books in the series, Uncommon Grace and Hidden Mercies.

I enjoyed this book so much. It was so much fun, having an author, write a story about an author. It was wonderful. I related to the Logan very much, and I know that is because Serena did such an awesome job of describing him. I cried along with Hope as she faced life on her own, raising her children, relating to the anger she felt toward Titus after his death. One thing about this book, she should NEVER get a review like Logan did for his book. This book is a great story and it easily stands alone, but you will enjoy seeing the story progress past the former books of this series. 5 stars from this reviewer.

I really liked this book. I didn't realise is was part of a series?? I have read book one but didn't read book two...wish I would have read them in order...ha.
Still really enjoyed this book. It was a wholesome tale about a man trying to rediscover his motivations and a woman trying to find her place/way in her world. Logan is a writer who is burnt out. After his wife died from Leukemia he basically speed wrote a bunch of fiction stories. But now after years he is no longer able to flesh out his writing and his last few books have been flops. He goes to visit Amish country with his girlfriend/fiance. When he gets there he finds an inner peace and a bit of deja vue. He doesn't understand it but the feelings of peace and tranquility will he (and his editor) hopes renew him for his next novel which is coming due soon.
At the same time Hope has lost her husband in a farm accident (and partial stupidity God rest his soul). Hope now has to figure out how to support herself and two small children (and a bun in the oven). She is unwilling to live off the charity of the church and marry off to someone she doesn't love. She puts out a few notice cards saying she can cook and clean.
And enter Logan with a new house, no cooking/cleaning skills, and occupied with his writing. He hires Hope to take care of things at his new house, which turns out to be her old childhood home. Lots of stuff happens, don't want to go into too much detail and spoil it. Good story, sweet, wholesome, and an interesting look in trying to find your place/happiness.
Great cameo of Grace and Levi!! (who apparently make more of a cameo in the second book...so I have to read that one now.) :D

Okay quick spoiler moment, I really like how Hope wanted to farm. She had these skills/hopes/dreams and Logan gives her the space/support/understanding/free rein to be who she has always wanted to be. So wonderful. :'')

This was the 3rd Amish book I've read in this month. It was the last of this series, and my least favorite. I didn't particularily like the plot or the hero. It was still interesting to read about the characters from the past 2 books, I liked seeing how their lives were turning out. So I wouldn't chalk it off as a wasted read.

The very first Amish romance I ever read that got me into the genre. Took me forever to refind the title due to the fact I borrowed it from the library years ago. I couldn’t remember much about it sans for the fact it left that wholesome feel good feeling that drew me back to the genre all these years later. Now I want it for my collection and to reread it.

Serena B. Miller in her new book “Fearless Hope Book Three in the Hidden Mercies series published by Howard Books takes us into the life of Hope Yoder.

From the back cover: When an Amish woman falls for the New York crime writer who buys her family farm, she must decide whether to follow the longings of her heart or the rules of her faith.

I have to admit somehow I goofed and missed the first two books in this series which is a double shame as I enjoy Ms. Miller as a writer. The good news is this book can be read as a stand-alone and you will not feel as if you missed anything. Though I would recommend going out and getting the other two, as I will, just to see what has come before. Hope is a widow and the family savings were spent purchasing the bull that killed her husband so she sells her farmhouse to a NYC writer who moves in. Hope now cleans the farmhouse that used to be hers and a friendship develops between her and Logan. I think Ms. Miller has done an outstanding job of bringing both Hope and Logan to life. Wow, what a superb characters with such depth. “Fearless Hope is filled with family and overcoming adversities. I think that “Fearless Hope is a winner! Ms. Miller has given us a wonderful, sweet story with power and depth that will keep you flipping pages.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Howard Books. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Title: FEARLESS HOPE
Author: Serena Miller
Publisher: Howard Books
April 2014
ISBN: 978-1451660371
Genre: Amish

FEARLESS HOPE started with a death (I don’t like that sort of beginning). We watch her beloved husband killed and we know exactly how it happened and why. I wondered at the time how Ms. Miller would work a romance with the heroine not yet recovered from her husband’s death.

The book does start slow. Hope has a lot of grief and anger to work through, plus she’s pregnant and there is a lot of “who will hire a pregnant woman thoughts. Logan is not a religious person, living with a woman as married, and very wealthy. It was interesting how he came to Ohio and settled in the area, meeting war veterans and hiring Hope.

About midway through the book the story picks up some. I start to care for the characters and I wondered how Ivan Troyer’s family worked into the story. Then I got suspicious, decided where the story was going and it went there! By that time I was very engaged in the story. I loved FEARLESS HOPE, loved watching Hope find herself, watching Logan find himself, and watching them find each other. Great book. 4.5 stars. $14.99. 384 pages.

Good

This is a good love story about an author and an Amish widow. It has forgiveness, redemption and warmth in the storytelling. Logan, an author comes to an Amish community and buys a home there. He feels a kinship with the home. He becomes interested in his housekeeper and she in him. Good story.

I’ve read the first two books in this series, An Uncommon Grace and Hidden Mercies, and now Fearless Hope that does not disappoint. Like the first two we are we are again in Holmes County Ohio.
The beginning is so very sad as we go with Hope and her two young children, as they loose their Dad and her husband to an angry bull. Hope is having a hard time with forgiving Titus his foolishness, and what it brought him. How is she going to survive without him, and she is one month pregnant with another baby.
In NY City a successful author is being plagued with writer’s block, and decides to go with his fiancé Marla to Ohio as she looks for some furnishing for the apartment she is working on in her design business. All of a sudden there is such a mind pull, and Logan takes a turn he didn’t really want to.
He experiences a real case of déjà vu, and a man who has lived in the city all of his life impulsively buys an old Amish farmhouse. Imagine how is fiancé felt, and he decides to go there and write? Write he does, as he stumbles upon an old manual typewriter, and a plethora of wonderful World War II stories. I loved this, and it was so touching.
You are now going to meet and visit with so many wonderful and God Loving people. Including Hope and her children, the bishop, the neighbors, and even young stowaways. There are troubles ahead, but you won’t be able to leave this book alone until you get to the bottom of everything.
If I could give this book a higher rating I would have, it is an awesome story that I never wanted to end. I thank Serena B Miller so much for sharing her wonderful gift with us.

Serena B. Miller has written a beautiful novel, "Fearless Hope". When I started reading this book, I thought “ho-hum, another Amish novel. But I was pleasantly surprised. This novel could have taken many turns because the story line kept spinning off in different directions. This would not be something I liked, except that it certainly kept my interest because I kept waiting for something else to happen.

This is the story of a newly widowed Old Order Amish woman with two children and pregnant with a third. She starts housekeeping for an Englischer author who has writer’s block and who purchased her old family home. There he hopes that the peace and quiet will inspire him to finish his new book in his series. He finds more than he bargained for and finds purpose for his life.

I think this novel was very well written. I have read Ms. Miller’s novels before and they have never disappointed me. This was no exception. I highly recommend this book. What a great way to spend a rainy afternoon!

An Amish woman, Hope Yoder, looses her husband in an accident. She has 2 children and a baby on the way. An Englisch man, Logan Parker) moves into the neighborhood and hires Hope to clean and cook for him. The Amish community really doesn't approve of this.
This book has many sub-plots (twists and turns). Logan has never been to Ohio, yet he feels very at home there. When he visits a neighbor's home, he feels like he has been there befoe and when he attends he church, he feels like he recognizes some of the words.
Logan has a fiancee and she hates Ohio and the home Logan moves into. Will their relationship last?
The reason Logan decides to stay in Ohio is that he is a writer and is suffering from "writer's block." He goes into an antique store and finds a manual typewriter. The owner of the store will not let him buy the typewriter, but will let him come to the store and use it. At the store, many locals come and talk with Logan and tell him their stories. This becomes one of his next books...a different book from anything he has ever written.
This was a good read and the only reason it didn't get 5 stars is that it gets too "preachy" in several places.

After finishing "The Bone Parade" this past weekend, I had to do a little light reading.

I will go on record saying this is the first Amish Christian fiction book I have ever read and I really liked the book because it was not overly preachy in the story-- yes God and faith were mentioned but not crammed down my throat like I was afraid it would be.

This book actually started out as a mystery or hinted at reincarnation even but eventually everything was explained and made sense.

The basics of the story-without spoilers-

Logan Parker, a burned out writer from NY, moves to Holmes County, OH to clear his head and take a breather from the rat race.

The first home he looks at, and eventually buys, he feels a strong connection to the home and the land although he has never been to OH before. The longer he stays in his home and meets more of his neighbors, he keeps feeling like he has been there before, he even begins understanding a little of their Pennsylvania Deutsch- snippets of phrases and words here and there.

Adding to this mystery is a bit of romance because he hires a local Amish widow to cook and clean for him.

I do not normally like Amish novels. I just never developed the liking for them; however, I have on occasion read a few. I picked this up because I'd enojoyed Serena Miller's other novels very much.

This one tells the story of a very successful novelist, an Englisher, who visits Amish country with his fiance, sees an old house and immediately feels a connections. In spite of himself, he buys the house, hoping to get past the writer's block that has been plaguing him. He feels strongly as if he'd been in this house before and can't shake this feeling.

Hope Yoder's husband had just been killed by a bull and she finds herself with two young children and pregnant with another, with no way to earn a living. She decides to offer her services as a housekeeper and Logan, the writer, hires her to keep house for him.

Serena Miller writes a wonderful novel, creating characters that actually feel like the folks in your own town. This book is wonderfully told and very gripping. I knew there was a mystery here and it shocked me when the truth was revealed!

It was a wonderful book and I intend to get the one before it so I can find out more about these precious folks.

Would be a 5-star if it wasn't so much religious proselytizing!
I almost stopped reading Fearless Hope several times, because of all the eye-rolling religious proselytizing it is absolutely full of!

That I just could not stop reading it,despite all the preaching/witnessing says a lot. Being an ex-evangelical Christian maybe I was able to overlook it and not let it annoy me as much as it might some other readers, just be forewarned~ there is a lot of it in this book!

For lovers of Amish/Mennonite fiction/romance this was an amazingly well written and engrossing story, that really has a lot of interesting cultural information about the different sects of Amish and Mennonites.

I also enjoyed the historical information about the women who flew many planes in WWII [WACS]which was something I never knew. Some very touching WWII stories shared with Logan while he is writing a book.

Absolutely loved Hope, her children,Logan and several supporting characters.

As I said,I was not able to stop reading this book.

If non-Christian readers are able to overlook all the 'god-talk',this is really a great story.

While obedient to the Amish faith, the heroine is truly brilliant as she questions some of the rules that keep her from fulfilling her dreams. The hero is charmingly clueless about Amish culture and sadly unaware of God’s personal interest in him; these traits make him all the more endearing to readers who have had doubts of their own.

Logan Parker’s life is consumed by the pressures of his writing career and his ambitious whirlwind of a fiancée, Marla. When his drinking gets out of control, he goes to Holmes County, Ohio, on a short trip that leads to months of immersing himself in the Amish community. He employs recent widow Hope Yoder to keep house, but this encourages gossip about the nature of their relationship. Logan’s sense of déjà vu eventually leads to the revelation of an explosive secret that shatters his sense of who he is and where he belongs. (HOWARD, Apr., 384 pp., $14.99)

As with prior books in this series, It's a blend of Englisch and Amish. Logan, our hero. Is totally out of his element in Amish county, but the beauty and peaceful feeling he gets from the area and sweet Amish neighbors makes him trade his high profile New York like for that of a farmer.

Hope, recently widowed, wants what's best for her children. She also wants to be able to support them. Working for the new Enchisch man seems to be the answer. Especially when he allows her to manage the farm.

Falling in love was the easy part, hiding it from each other, and the rest of the world, was the hard part.

There's a second story woven around Logan and Hopes story. Logan's neighbors. Is there a connection between the families?

We also get to visit with old friends from the first two books. Love, love, love Levi and Grace!
