Before dragon eggs landed on American soil. Before a Slayer camp existed. And before Tori discovered her powers . . . there was an island. Lush forests, jutting peaks, and sloping hills covered St. Helena—the single most remote island in the Atlantic. And it is here where Dr. B grew up, working each summer on the Overdrake plantation alongside his brother. All was well until the day something was discovered on the plantation and things went horribly wrong.

This was very short but gave a good taste of the ideas in the Slayer series. I read this after the rest of the series. I enjoyed it. It was interesting seeing some of the characters interact when they were younger. Going in, I knew what would happen but I still enjoyed it and would recommend this novella for fans of the Slayer series.
I have read book three. So I understand the basis of this prequel. I plan to start book one soon. It was fun to get The background story of Jamison otherwise known as Dr. Bartholomew.
Draci.
I found myself engrossed by the story and the character of Jamison from the start. Almost nothing turned out the way I anticipated in this story which endears it to me even more. It reads like a prequel so I look forward to the actual Slayer book (series, I'm sure).
Surprisingly good, but there are some loose ends that I suspect might be answered in the novels (which I do not plan to read) and some info dumping which was added for readers unfamiliar with the world building which knock it down from 4 to 3 stars. Still, no regrets about reading it.
Started a bit dryly, but it was great background information about Dr. B. and his history with Overdrake. I like Dr. B.'s father. And Nathan's story and Bess's powers explain Dr. B.'s passion to train Slayers.
Great prequel. It gives you a better idea what motivates Dr. B into bringing the Slayers together. It is short but gives you information that you didn't know from the Slayer series if you read them first, which I did.
