"Do you think I'm going to make it easy on you? I'm not really happy with you, Freddie boy." This time the anger stayed. Brown stains appeared on his teeth. "I am not Freddie. Who is Freddie? My name is Henrik." "You don't get out much do you? Haven't you ever watched the late night movies? Freddie's a regular star. A very ugly mass murderer, much like yourself"-Natalya and vampire

She was not acting anything like the woman he had dreamed of. He didn't feel soothed by her, or at peace, instead he wanted to tear out his hair. His cool demeanor was rapidly being challenged, not by vampire, but by his own lifemate.-Vikirnoff

Dark Demon the 16th book in the Dark series was a game changer! Dayum this book got my blood pumping! OMG it was so action packed from start to finish. Dark Demon had me all over the place. One minute I was laughing hard, the next I was needing a cold shower, the next I was losing my shit over the epic fights especially at the end. I think my heart stopped for a few minutes with the last fight! Just sayin'

We could be in deadly peril here. The reminder was punctuated with flicks of his tongue. She laughed aloud. "You can't say deadly peril. In all those late night movies the stupid teens know they are in danger and they take time to kiss and touch just like this..." She groaned when his tongue flicked her nipple and sent waves of desire shooting through her bloodstream. "And then Freddie comes and kills them and they deserve it."-Natalya and Vikirnoff

"I have to agree, I do not like it either, but I feel the need very strong in you. It is why I did not forbid you to do this." She ground her teeth together. "If I were you, I'd choose my words very carefully. I'm behind you with a knife in my hand. If you plan on spending any time at all around me, strike words like 'forbid' and 'allow' from your vocabulary."-Vikirnoff and Natalya

I loved everything about Natalya! She was perfect I wouldn't change anything about her. She was so super amazingly kick ass and snarky and I think she turned me Bi! I have a total girl crush on her. Natalya was brave, loyal and funny. The smart mouth things she said had me laughing so much. She loved old horror movies, referencing them often in her sassy comments, and had more weapons then a small army. Natalya was part Mage and part of the Dragonseeker Clan which meant she was not only kick ass but she was bad ass at magic too! Natalya was no docile little woman needing a man to save her she was a warrior through and through. I am also in love with Vikirnoff . Hell I love them both so much maybe I could be the meat in their couple sandwich. Ménage a trois? Yes please!! Vikirnoff had envisioned his lifemate for hundreds of years as a sweet, calm, soft woman who would listen, and obey him. He thought she would hang on his every word and live to please him, boy did he get a surprise. Vikirnoff was a man of few words. Controlled, calm and a male of great power Vikirnoff was sexy as hell! He was very old worldly and dominate.

"My entire life has already changed." She held out her hand to him. "For the better." A faint smile rose up unexpectedly. "I've decided you're trainable." His eyebrow shot up as he stepped into the pool beside her. "Trainable?" She nodded. "You can't possibly think you're going to get away with bossing me, right? So once you're past the fact that I'm always right, we'll get along just fine."-Natalya and Vikirnoff

"You know, when you started in about the entire lifemate thing, I didn't protest too much, because you were kind of cute." Natalya pulled her gaze away from a shimmering face with its mouth open in a scream. She took several more careful steps, sure of the pattern, and stopped only feet away from where her father had hidden the book. "At the time, I didn't realize how incredibly bossy you are or how grumpy you can be." "Kind of cute? You didn't protest too much?" Vikirnoff echoed. "In all your late night movies did you ever come across a character named Pinocchio?" Natalya burst out laughing. "Of all the movies, you had to have seen that one. That's so you."-Natalya and Vikiroff

I loved reading about Vikirnoff and Natalya falling in love with each other. There was something about their relationship that just grabbed me. They are one of those couples that I just connected to. The way Vikirnoff respected Natalya even though he wanted nothing more then to lock her away and protect her from everything. The way Natalya melted the coldness to him. Their cute and funny banter. And damn did they have some searing passion that burned right though my kindle and set me ablaze! Vikirnoff was a little bit of a controlling Dom in the sack, ripping clothes off, restraining her hands, and damn if that wasn't hott!

"So you said, you have to see to my happiness. Didn't I hear that when you so rudely married us without my consent?" He groaned softly. "I can see this is going to be one of those difficult days." She tossed her head so that her tawny hair fell around her face in waves doing things to his heart he didn't want to examine too closely. Even her rude noises were becoming endearing and that was just plain frightening. "I think you're going to have a lot of those." "Difficult days? I think you are right." "So answer the question. You have to make me happy, right?" "I can do no other," he agreed. A slow, wicked grin curved her mouth and set her eyes sparkling. "I need lots of things to make me happy. And keep me happy. I'm that kind of girl." "What kind of girl?" Suspicion crept into his voice. "Needy. High-maintenance." "I do not doubt that for a minute."-Natalya and Vikirnoff

"I love it when you get all bossy on me. It's silly and never works, but it's kind of cute."-Natalya

This book had some big things happen in it. The vampires in this book are way more kick ass too. The Mage parts of the plot were cool and really added to the Carpathian world. The fact that the Mages and Vampires are teaming up now, made the enemy way more evil and harder to fight. The battle scenes were more epic in this book. That end battle had me losing my shit. OMG My Gregori!!!! I was a bundle of nerves. Like straight losing my shit!!! Panic attack. That end battle was so kick ass..... The whole time I was yelling at the top of my lungs "NOOOOOO" while jumping up and down in my seat. My husband was in the other room and came running thinking something was really wrong he got to me and just sighed rolling his eyes and said "Jessica damn it I thought someone was dying!" And I was all "OMG someone was dying!!!! My poor Gregori!" and he just walked off lol!

"I am reading your thoughts." "Really? Are you getting the part about what an incredible lover you are and how I might be able to put up with your bossy nonsense if you keep me happy in other ways?" She shrugged. "Just asking, in case, you know, you wanted to start keeping me happy."-Vikirnoff and Natalya

This book was so fucking awesome. I loved every minute of it. Gregori's book Dark magic is my favorite of the series, this one is my second favorite in the series. I don't know how Christine Feehan does it. How she manages to keep this series fresh and exciting. She has amazing talent as a writer and a huge imagination. I mean my God who does she think up these things. Such a cool amazing world, and with epic characters. I just love the shit outta this series!

I really hate to have to admit this because I've almost worked out the counter spell to undo the binding ritual, but I have fallen madly in love with you. There was a small deliberate sigh in her voice, as if she were annoyed that she could possibly have fallen in love with him. His burning lungs found air. That small sigh was enough to tell him she was still Natalya, his warrior woman and she wasn't going to cave in because she was flat on her back. I hate to disagree with you when you are obviously unable to defend your position, but the ritual binding words are not a spell. You cannot undo our marriage. She closed her eyes but a faint smile curved her lips. Then I shall endure.-Natalya and Vikirnoff

Dark Demon is book 16 of Christine Feehan's wonderful Dark Carpathian series. This is the story of Natalya Shonski and Vikirnoff von Shrieder. We first met Natalya in Feehan's Dark Secret and Vikirnoff in Dark Destiny.

Always on the run from vampires and Carpathian hunters, Natalya is part dark mage, part human, and part Carpathian. Her Carpathian bloodline is from one of the oldest and most respected of all Carpathian families: the Dragonseekers. Poisoned against the Carpathian people by the treacherous dark mage Xavier, she has been trained to fear all immortals equally, and is an accomplished slayer. She never imagined she would feel anything other than disgust when facing an immortal, until the day she comes face-to-face the man that is her lifemate.

When his brother Nicolae's lifemate Destiny asked him to find a woman who needed their help, Vikirnoff knew he could do no other than find and defend her from all enemies. As soon as Vikirnoff saw the photograph of the woman, he felt a strong compulsion to locate and protect her. He will follow her across oceans, back to his homeland, the Carpathian mountain range.

Vikirnoff has lived a colorless and emotionless existence for centuries, and is astonished at the gut-reaction he has when he finds his one true lifemate: Natalya. Although she's not at all what he imagined, Vikirnoff feels the instant age-old pull to her. Natalya is a clever and capable warrior with battle skills that rival Vikirnoff's. He knows she is not quite human, and not quite Carpathian, but she is the light to his darkness, the woman he is destined to love and protect for all time. Together, they must uncover the secrets of Natalya's past, and try to protect their people from certain destruction.

Dark Demon is the best Carpathian book I've read since Dark Destiny (book 13). It is the longest Carpathian book I've read so far, and was full of the legends of dragons and wizards. I loved seeing some of the characters from the other books - especially Mikhail, the prince of the Carpathian people. The illumination of the Dragonseeker line added so much to the existing folklore in the series.

Natalya is hands downs one of Feehan's best heroines to date and maybe my favorite lifemate in the series so far. She is so modern and sassy, and full of pop culture references that Vikirnoff (or Vik, as she sometimes referred to him) had no hope of understanding. She is a sharp and witty woman with immense combative and magical abilities - a true kick-butt-heroine!

Dark Demon shows Feehan's great versatility and is truly an original. For me, this book represented an enormous amount of growth for the Dark series. The storyline is taking an interesting turn and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Wow, this book takes the story to another level by introducing the mage storyline. As if the Carpathian series wasn't intricate enough. I found it hard to follow some of the mage aspects, yet I was sucked in. Not only that, Natalya was one seriously kickbutt heroine. She was a total badass with all her weapons. A girl after my own heart. She even has a sword. I just loved how she jumped into the fray, guns blazing, sword swinging, and flinging knives. The part where she fights the shadow warrior in her room at the inn.... Just fantastic. This book would make a great movie!

Vikirnoff, what can I say? I loved him. He was definitely a sexy, manly hero, but he could respect his strong woman, although she wasn't what he envisioned for his mate. Although he got frustrated because she wouldn't sit back and let him protect her, he admired her at the same time. I liked how she saved his life numerous times, and yet he also saved hers. They were a great match. And boy, the chemistry was off the charts. Great love scenes, if I may say so.

I'm a little confused on how things all tie together with Razvan, Xavier, and the master vamps' master plan, but I'm going to keep reading to see where things go with this storyline. I couldn't quit this series if I wanted to. Something about these Carpathians. They are just in my blood (no pun intended).

It was cool to see some of the other Carpathians show up with their lifemates. I haven't read a handful of the books, so my interest was perked in seeing some of the Carpathians I wasn't introduced to. It was totally awesome as all get out how Mikhail went all Highlander (if you watch the show or movies you know what I mean) on the vamps. That was a rocking cool scene. They had a knockdown drag out that really kept me on the edge of my seat. Like I said, I'm totally voting for this one to be made into a movie (by the right director, of course).

I was really glad that I enjoyed this book, since I definitely got intrigued with Vikirnoff from his appearances in Dark Secret and Dark Destiny. He has lived up to my expectations, as Natalya has. She is probably my favorite lifemate now, which is tough to say because I love so many of these ladies.

Great job on this one, Ms. Feehan.

I love me some Christine Feehan, and I loveeeeee me some Carpathian romance! Dark Demon is the 13th book in the series (officially at least) and is my current favorite! I absolutely loveeeee me some Vicky (Vikirnoff)!

This series does a great job of having an overall arc, while keeping each book to one Carpathian couple getting together. The overall arc of the series is starting to heat up with new information being discovered specifically in this book and I cannot wait to see how it unfolds in future novels! Thankfully for me, I started reading this series years after it was started so I get to dive right into the next book and easily figure out the secrets to this unfolding storyline!

Natalya and Vikirnoff are a wonderful couple and I thoroughly enjoyed this book and their love story. Natalya is different than a lot of the other women previous in the sense that she is a powerful person on her own. Some of the previous novel's leading ladies have the issue of being very helpless..the typical idiot damsel in distress...but not Natalya! The banter between her and Vikirnoff made me giggle and swoon while reading, and hopefully it will for you as well!!

If you love romance novels, vampires, hot sex scenes, and an actual GOOD storyline...you NEED to be reading these! You won't be able to put them down and you'll be excited to pick the next one up...all the LOVE for the Dark Series!

"Dark Demon" is the story of Natalya and Vikirnoff.
Natalya is the fighter of the dark- a Xena warrior-esque tigress having 1/3 of Carpathian,Human and Mage blood in her. The murder and memories of her twin Razwan and her parents dead cloud her memories, making her hunt vampires and have hatred against the Carpathians.
When one such fight goes awry, she unwillingly summons Vikirnoff, a Carpathian on the verge on darkness- who turns out to be her lifemate.
Together they along with Mikhail and some new additions fight the evil vampires, the Troll king, the Shadow Hunters while decoding the mystery behind the Dragon warrior clan as well as Natalya's clouded memories.
Kickass brave heroine and a caring alpha hero have loads of adventures in this one. We also have betrayal, angst and witty dialogues with some hot, hot lovemaking!
Overall, a good read and another awesome addition to the series. I was a bit bored by all the troll drama but stuck around for the main couple.

Natalya Shonski is human, mage and Carpathian. She is leaving the village inn to travel to the Carpathian mountains. Natalya feels compelled to go to the mountains to find something. She neither knows who placed the compulsion on her or what object she is seeking.

Vikirnoff Von Shrieder is hunting for a woman his brother, Nicolae, says must be found, warned of danger and protected. Vikirnoff knows from the moment he holds her picture that she is special. He keeps her picture in his shirt, next to his heart.

Natalya encounters the first vampire when he steps out from behind a tree. She calls him Freddie Boy and that she expected him an hour ago. The vampire, whose name is Henrik, says he will kill her. She tries cutting off his head, but Henrik dissolves into mist. He reappears a short distance way from her. Natalya shoots Freddie Boy and then stabs him in the heart with her knife. A raptor comes out of nowhere, its talons headed for her eyes. She rolls and lands on one knee. Arturo materializes. They are old enemies. Natalya suggests Arturo end Henrik's whinny noises. Arturo removes the knife from Henrik's chest. Henrik tells Natalya he will kill her. Arturo tells her she will not escape this time.

Vikirnoff hears Natalya's voice and is flooded with emotions and colors. He knows he has found his lifemate. The woman he finds is not the docile and obedient woman that he imagined as a lifemate. She is a warrior woman. Vikirnoff joins the fight against the vampires and wolves. He tells Natalya to run. She will not leave him to face the fight alone. While he fights Arturo, she battles against Freddie Boy. Something trolling under the soil grabs Natalya by the ankles, digging deep into her ankle bones, and leaving something similar to a skin graft around her ankle. She can't get it off. Vikirnoff rips Arturo's heart out of his chest. He throws the organ on the ground, but before he can incinerate it, the something under the soil grabs it and Arturo, swallowing up both in the ground. Vikirnoff is badly injured and Natalya takes it upon herself to see to his welfare.

This is my favorite book next to Makhail's and Gregori's books. The main characters are engaging and fresh. Natalya is an independent, strong woman, confident in her skills as a warrior and as a mage. Vikirnoff is Old World in his attitudes and manners, but he is undone when faced with Natalya's sass and flashes of vulnerability. The plot is intricate. There are a few subplots left open for other books. The descriptions are so well written it feels like the reader is right in the thick of the moment. I recommend this book and give it five warrior woman stars.

Vikirnoff finally catches up to Natalya, the woman in the photo, as she's facing off a couple of vampires and some crazed wolves in the Carpathian mountains. He's met his match in Natalya though - she's mouthy, capable, independent and powerful in her own right: she's of the Dragonseeker line, and part Mage, part Carpathian and part human. Led to believe that the hunters killed her brother and would kill her if they find her, it's a bit strange that she doesn't attack Vikirnoff beyond a moment of startlement - apparently seeing him face off the vampires is enough for her.

This could have been a good addition to the series, and certainly has some good scenes - notably the battle against Maxim towards the end - but had me terribly confused most of the time. I liked Natalya and her tiger, and I liked Vikirnoff too and the teasing that went on between them. But glaring oversights common to the series (and Feehan's writing) were really hard to ignore here - like the fact that these women never eat. Seriously, when you give blood, you must eat. Poor Corrine, in Dark Melody, was dying of a heart problem and never got to eat, even though Dayan took her blood. "Oh you're so pale" he says after - FEED HER DAMN YOU!! It's a little thing, but it nags at me every time I read these books. It's not that I want Feehan to describe every meal or anything, but she needs to give some indication that they are taking care of themselves, because they're still human.

There are many inconsistencies in her books - another is the impossible positions and gestures the characters get into, which lead me to believe the men must have a second pair of arms for all the things they do while they are carrying the women around (which they do a lot) - and they really get in the way of me suspending my disbelief. It's fantasy, yes, but it still needs to be grounded in reality! Another is that, before the men find their lifemates they're always going on about how they can't feel emotions - fair enough, I like that bit - but in this book Vikirnoff is lamenting the fact that he feels nothing "but loneliness" (well that's something!) and then Natalya sends a telepathic message that his emotions are distracting her from her fight with the vampires - and lo and behold he feels emotions and sees colours again because she's his lifemate! I'm sorry, but I don't get how someone who can't feel emotions can feel emotions!!! Does that make sense to anyone else?

Did not finish -- too much confusing stuff about Carpathians, vampires, shadow warriors, and too much of the hero and heroine just reading each other's minds.

This was a really good story. I didn't have time to leave a review it when I got done and then when I tried to write a review yesterday my PC crashed and I lost the review. I'm making another attempt but is it's not as detailed as my normal reviews, it's not because of any fault of the story.

Natalya is a strong and intelligent woman. She is a descendant of the rare dragonseekers line of the Carpathian people. Because of lies and mind manipulation, Natalya doesn't have an accurate idea of her family history and thinks that the Carpathians are as bad as the vampires and would kill her on sight. Natalya is alone in the world and on the run as vampires and human hunters seek to capture her.

Vikirnoff is an ancient Carpathian male; Carpathians are born vampires with abilities like shape shifting (to any form, even mist), magic spells and psychic powers. The males of the Carpathians have a darkness in them and if they don't find their lifemates, they can lose their souls and become evil. Vikirnoff had been travelling with his brother, Nicolae, until they found Nicolae's lifemate, Destiny (from book #13). They found out that human hunters were hunting a woman that Vikirnoff was seeing in his dreams and they decide that he should go after her to protect her from the hunters.

Natalya has been on the run for years and has encountered many vampires along the way. She can fight them well enough but she's never been taught how to kill them completely (by destroying the heart) so her opponents keep coming back and coming after her. Natalya happens to be in a fight with 2 vampires when Vikirnoff finally catches up with her. He helps her but because of Natalya's history, she thinks that Vikirnoff wants to kill her and she doesn't trust him. When they drive the vampires off, Vikirnoff is severely hurt and Natalya finds that she has a strong need to help him and can't leave him behind. She helps him but it's with very mixed feelings.

Bascially from there, Natalya is plagued by strong feelings for Vikirnoff that she can't control and she wonders if he's controlling her or is not, what is going on. She fully intends to escape Vikirnoff (and the feelings he provokes in her) but she doesn't actually make the attempt. Natalya and Vikirnoff have a lot to deal with as well because in addition to the vampires, there are human hunters that are determined to cause trouble as well as someone from Natalya's past. The whole situation is kind of messed up and Natalya ends up finding out things she needed to know but really didn't want to know. Vikirnoff is there for her and although they have some spats, he's solidly behind her (providing her the support she needs in this traumatic time) and eventually, gets her trust and even love. The story ends with Vikirnoff and Natalya solidly together and starting a HEA.

This was a really enjoyable story. I liked Natalya and while she had her doubts and had thoughts of getting away from Vikirnoff at first, she wasn't annoying about it and was willing to accept the truth when she encountered it. Vikirnoff was a good hero. He was so close to becoming vampire and when he found Natalya, all he wanted to do is to make her happy and his. He did have some outdated ideas of what his lifemate would be at first but I liked how he was quickly able to adapt and appreciate Natalya for herself. Overall, this was a really enjoyable story and addition to the series and I'd recommend it. :D

* note - I listened to the audio version of this story and the narrator did a very good job.

I am a devoted fan of Christine Feehan and my most favorite series is her world of the fascinating and exciting Carpathians.

I have enjoyed all books in the series but book #16, Dark Demon, I really loved. Finally we get Natalya & Virkirnoff who we have met in previous books but never together.

Natalya who is part Carpathian & Mage (loved this addition to the series with wizards, dragons) is strong, independent, skilled in the arts of mage, a fighter and a loner, who has been hiding from her people not wanting to have anything to do with them and their lives because of what she believes they have done to her and the people she loved.

Virkirnoff is on the point of turning rogue, and has been tracking Natalya who he believes is his lifemate. When he finally meets her, is shocked and amazed at her reaction to him. No “flower on the wall but someone who matches his strength and cleverness.and passion.
Despite fighting the attraction for him, they team up to fight the evil vampires and try to keep the prince, Mikhail and his wife Raven, safe from the attempts to try and destroy them and the entire Carpathian race.

Loved their interaction and their chemistry together…and wow I thought only Carpathian males were possessive.surprise…so are the females. Some funny moments when the green-eyed monster rears it’s head to Natalya..no way will any other woman be with him.!!!

Fabulous meeting all the familiar and new characters in this story. The action and fighting is non-stop but never overdone, the same with the sex scenes, which were really sensual and …yes hot and sexy too…but with some tender and sweet moments as well.

The series continues to be as exciting as ever and I wait for each book with abated breath.to continue my journey into the incredible world of the Carpathians

Natalya totally rocked! I liked Vikirnoff too, but I was really impressed with Natalya. She kicked ass. Not sure when the Carpathians became the weaker species, but they seem to be getting their asses kicked a lot. This was a great edition to the series.

The only thing keeping Vikirnoff Von Shrieder from seeking out the dawn (to end his existence) was the search for a specific psychic woman that had started in the US (Dark Destiny) and finally brought him back to his home in the Carpathian Mountains. The miracle of her being his lifemate brought on fear and terror first because his first site of Natalya Shonski was of her in battle with a vampire. Growing up, Natalya and her twin Razvan learned the art of magick and she knew of Carpathians, vampires and others and was taught to fear them all. Now this hunter wanted her and her need to protect him was just as strong too, even with her doubts about their compatibility.

Book 16 .. Fun - We met Vikirnoff in Dark Destiny and started to hear about Natalya (even though we didn’t know much about her back then). Then we met her briefly in Dark Secret and got to see more of him, now to get to the story for them. Natalya is a riot, she watched so much TV over the years that she actually nicknamed a vampire after Freddy Kruger. Her references to the old classic movies and TV shows (used to alleviate her nervousness and fear) had me laughing most of the way through this book. Vikirnoff was not what I expected, I was not sure I could take another cooking cutter Carpathian, after his emotions returned I expected the protectiveness and bossy attitude, but he had a wonderful sense of humor to be able to match wits with Natalya. The return to the Carpathian Mountains brought a familiar cave into more light and also allowed a touch with Mikhail, Raven, Falcon and Sara.
Bonus (in the book I have), in the back of the book, Ms. Feehan has added an appendix with information on the Carpathian language, their healing chants and a bit of history. It doesn’t change the stories at all, but it is kind of neat to have some of their native language in the book and the information too.

love all of Christine Feehan books, so I could be a little prejudice on that score.
This story is about Natalya who is (Carpathian, Mage and Dragonseeker who is the oldest bloodline of the Carpathians). She was also gifted with being part tiger, which she can turn into when she is cornered by the vampires. She also carries a Dragonseeker birthmark, that burns whenever a vampire gets near or in the vacinity of her. Her mage blood line comes from the Carpathians sworn enemy, who stole a Carpathian life mate after killing her lifemate.

She is on the search of a knife and a book that has spells in it that her evil grandfather sealed with the 3 bloods of a Carpathain, Mage and the Dragonseeker) And only 1 who carries all three bloodlines can open this book.

Her lifemate is Vikirnoff who is on his way back to the Carpathian mountains to say goodby to his prince, and to end his life, until he hears her voice inside his head and he sees colors and he gets his emotions back.

In this book near the end, you will read about the power that is written in all her other books. The alligence between Mikhail, and Gregori and all the Carpathians. In this book you will read about why the Prince (Mikhail)is so important to all the Carpathians and their surviveral

Really enjoyed this novel with the dragonseekers line as part of the Carpathian world state. I found Vik and Natalya really strong likeable characters and the movie references made me giggle. Natalya was a different take on the women before being half mage. I was slightly disappointed that she didn't turn into a dragon as her uncle did when fighting the vampires. I thought that would have been awesome to see this. We're still left with a cliffhanger in regards to her grandfather and her brother and I won't be surprised if they spring back into the storyline. Another thing I was disappointed over was the dragons found in the ice. Can they be rescued and brought back? The vision thing with the knife and what really happened. I'm hoping we get more of them again. That was awesome. I imagine her grandfather is keeping them imprisoned. Hopefully this will come into play again as well. Would love the see the Carpathians with this shape shifting ability. Dragons are always great in a paranormal book. It was also nice at the end of the book getting a more fuller understanding of the Carpathian healing chants and language of this world state. My favorite book out of this series so far, many more to go.

This book kicked so much ass!

Love Natalya! Like really love her. Vikirnoff a lucky man.

Their book was epic. Their battles were vicious! That battle in the ice cave. Couldn’t put the book down. Natalya’s magik skills. OMG! And she shifts into a TIGER! A freaking tiger!

And CF added Mikhail, Raven, Falcon, Sara into the mix and introduced Dominic. And that final freakin battle. Holy crap! I had to read it twice to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

So I kinda luuurved the hell out of this book. The story lines are becoming so much more intense. The baddie, Xavier, so damn evil. And Natalya’s brother, so sad he turned to the dark side.

I was getting a bit bored with the series but now... I can’t wait to see how far this all goes.

4.5 stars.

So, I now have another favorite book in the series. Reading this book so closely to Vikirnoff's brother Nicolae's was great. Nicolae told Vikirnoff that he'd lost his sense of humor, and Vikirnoff very seriously said he didn't have one. So seeing the serious and protective Vikirnoff paired up with the sassy, teasing, and strong Natalya was great. He had to realize that the woman meant for him was a warrior, not a gentle peacemaker. Natalya needed to realize she now had someone she could trust after running from Carpathians and vampires all her life. I loved how their relationship started off mid-battle, and that Vikirnoff let Natalya fight even though it went against his instincts. Every time she called him "Vik", I had to laugh.

This book had action in spades, humor, love, and some interesting things as far as world-building goes. Let's just say, mages. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Its been more than 10 years since I’ve read one of these Dark installments and I have to say the grow of the female protagonist is astounding. I love that she’s strong, she’s powerful, she’s tough, she’s confident, she’s everything that used to disappoint me about the early females except for the cop.
So Christine Feehan, Yes!
It moved very fast but of course for me the boring parts where is the sex scenes. All in all I’m a happy camper.

This has got to be my favourite book ever. I know i know i've said that for quite a few of the Carpathian Series, but if Feehan can actually top this one, then hats off to you lady.

Dark Demon had equal quantities of everything - romance, mystery, great characters, great situations, amazing conversations.. you know everything you want in a good book.

Natalya is part mage, part Carpathain and all woman. She's a movie addict with hilarious results - like calling the vampire Freddie Boy. She has grit and determination. She featured for half a page in (book 15). She's a woman on the run. The Vampires are searching for her as she can see the past of an object when she touches it, and they want her to find something for them.
She goes against everything she has been taught (basically being that the Carpathians will kill her if they find her) and still saves Vikirnoff's life and helps him heal as well after the two of them face a couple of vamps.

Vikirnoff, who i loved in , has been in search of Natalya since and now finds her in the Carpathian mountains fighting off Vampires with no fear. Always assuming his lifemate would be someone who loved home and hearth and not a fiesty smartmouth with a will and mind of her own, he's not sure what to make of her, but is captivated none the less.

I loved these lines in the book which summarised it best:
"He was beginning to realize having a lifemate was difficult. Living with her wasn't about what he wanted, or even needed. Being a lifemate was about supporting Natalya even when everything in him wanted something else. Her personality required a certain amount of freedom and it didn't always matter what he deemed best."

While learning to trust each other, they have their own adventurous time fighting off vampires, entering the cave of the dark mage Xavier and learn of family ties, betrayal and manipulation in Natalya's life. Throughout Vikirnoff is with her. I can't really add more without giving away more of the story - but this book does bring new characters and a larger plot against the Carpathians to life.

This book had a lot more happening in it than the other ones, and the ending was absolutely amazing - not the normal, she converted, small vampire fight and they lived happily ever after - a lot more here.

The attraction between these 2 is sizzling...and at the same time actually believable in a beyond the fairy tale way (am i still making sense?) I loved the part where Vikirnoff completely loses it during Natalya's conversion into a full Carpathian. This is the first book i think where Feehan actually showed the man showing fear and this much of concern - making me like Vikirnoff all the more.

And then there were lines like these that made Natalya and Vikirnoff my favourite couple:

I love when Vikirnoff first meets her in the forest and he orders her to leave the fight expecting her to obey:
Vikirnoff: "Get out of here. I will take care of this while you make your escape."
Natalya: "You've got to be kidding me!..You couldn't fight your way out of a paper bag right now."

Vikirnoff: "You will not address your lifemate with such disrespect. Do as I say at once and leave this place. The battle has only begun and you must remain safe. He will not die if you do not incinerate his heart"

Natalya: "Keep your orders for someone who wants to be hunter's mouse. And these things should come with an instruction manual on killing them."

Vikirnoff : "I do not want to embarrass you and force your obedience."

Natalya: "Are you out of your tiny little mind? Do your women actually obey when you say jump? And don't think for one moment that you could force my obedience. You don't want to start a war with me."

Vikirnoff : "The vampire is going for as much blood loss as possible to weaken me. If I try to
protect you, which I must do, I will divide my strength."

Natalya: "Well, try not to let it happen. I've got enough to take care of without worrying about
protecting an amateur. I'm a little busy here if you don't mind. Silence would be appreciated."

Natalya: "Die already! Sheesh, the least you could do is put yourself out of your misery and get it over...If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a whiney vampire."

"You're like the little engine that could, except you can't."

"This is just great news. My intended is the undead waiting to happen. Do I have a neon
sign stamped on my forehead? If you're a bloodsucking evil monster, willing to murder and wreak havoc, please apply."

Will definitely be reading this one again

It is really hard for me to rate these book now. This I give a 3 to on my regular scale compared to all the other books read, but I want to rate it against the other books in the series. I just don't feel that I can do that anymore as I have read some really good PNR, which is good all the way through. Lots of Kresley Cole, Nalini Singh, Larissa Ione or even Jeaniene Frost is like that. These books are just not. There are a lot of parts that are dragging and outright boring, yet the overall story when done was very good. If only it was cut down in places, not so much repeats of the same emotions, doubts, Capathian customs and sayings, it would be very good. I keep coming back to these books because I like the stories but they take longer and longer to finish.

This was a very good overall story. Vikirnoff is a really old Carpatian, one from the last prince that was sent out into the world. He felt his time to meet the sun come and go and really doesn't know how far he has gone since. Finding his lifemate changes his thoughts but he just cannot believe she isn't a biddable miss that is falling over to placate his darkness with her light. Instead she has her own darkness and is a ferocious warrior in her own right.

Natalya has grown up to think of Hunters as the enemies, though they are better than the vampires. She tries to stay away from them. She has a heritage that is all kinds of ways complicated including that she is part Carpathian herself. She has been battling the vampires for years and is probably about as old as Viriknoff though we never find out that for certain.

She has mad fighting and mage skills and other surprises that come out further in. I really liked her character. She is one of the strong women, probably the strongest so far. Although since I read Dark Slayer probably as a 6th or 7th book, I knew that strong non doormat types did exist. OK there have been some strong women (and some doormats) in this series, but not kickass and Natalya is.

I liked Vikirnoff too. He is just so clueless and dumbfounded when he realizes she is not just going to listen to his every word but he learns fast, yea! And doesn't force the issue so much like many of the others have. He is patient with this all the while they fight the vampire force that is descending upon them.

One should read the novellas Dark Descent and Dark Dream before reading this one as you meet the people and are involved with them. Also in one scene it is nice to know what had happen in the same place that they go to and what hunter was there and in what condition.

So, it was a pretty good storyline it just floundered in places and was boring there. Really I am judging it on the fact that I read six books in between starting this and finishing this as I put this down a lot. I'm always reading more than one book at a time but usually they are 2 or 3 books maxi between starting and finishing

Reread-- 2021 March
I started this and don't remember it at all. I thought I hadn't read it and put it on my reading shelf and saw that it said "read" and had a review from me. Wow, that's nice. I read the whole review, knowing that I had wrote it and... don't remember any of it. 8 years and it is totally gone from my memory. I thought that this one was going pretty darn good and wondering if it would get a 4 star review or not. I did read this when I had read many of these Carpathian books and that can get old. I seemed to be tired in points. Let's see if this does that again. I'm a good way in so we will see.

Yep, too many meandering battles and going nowhere relationship thoughts/talks. The only thing really good is that Natalya is very kick ass but... she is like a teenager in her responses sometimes. She doesn't have logical thought processes on what she remembers and what she knows. Vikirnoff quotes Xena, and June Cleaver, but yet doesn't know the TV shows that she compares him too. That is nickpicky but my head would shake.

I read this book several years ago. Found it at a used bookstore. The cover caught my eye. Guy thing. Throw fire colors, dragons and black on a cover - we'll read anything, or at least pick it up.

Decided to read it again.

Anyway, it's interesting to read one of the Carpathians books, knowing it came out years ago. So many books I've read are so similar (the Kings series by Keough, Vampire Academy (less the graphic sex stuff), but most definitely the plot lines.

One thing that I really noticed was the writing. Throughout all the dialogue, their aren't any contractions. Nobody talks without using contractions, and without it, the dialogue between characters sounded robotic, and lacked flow. There's nothing wrong with that, the human mind will, in many cases, read the sentence with the contraction, anyway, regardless of the way it's written. Lately, I've been focusing very heavily on writing styles, as a result, I'm better (then I was) at reading exactly what's written. I think I enjoyed books more when I wasn't.

The story's good, the pace fast and engaging. Definitely kept my attention. Even the graphic scenes made sense in their execution and timeliness, or maybe they didn't now that I think about it. A little heavier then I'd prefer (didn't really need to know what was going where - but hey, some people like that.) and too much in the cave.
I kept wondering - what the hell, there's a shit load of people plotting against Mikhail, and Vik and Nat were busy getting it on, a lot - thank god for the little pink vampire pill. Good thing the bad guys were considerate enough to give you two a little recess time.

Damn. What the hell kind of super strategist develops such a great plan, but waits for the enemy to regroup their forces, when the primary target is ... and the whole reason for the primary battle ... almost completely unguarded and otherwise predisposed keeping someone alive. Especially when said strategist wants to keep his sister alive - why snare her in your trap. What happened to divide and conquer. Everything that happened at Mikhail's could have happened the day earlier with far more likelihood of success. Dude, you suck at magic and you suck at strategy - good thing the antagonists are following you.

Other then the strategy (at the end), which I haven't really found a good/sound one yet. Too bad we don't have "totally honest trailers" for books. Wouldn't that be sweet. This was a good read. I really liked the two main characters, and I'd like to read more of their story. Only draw back of the Carpathian books - different primary characters in every book. Vik and Nat need a series all their own ... maybe they do, I haven't really looked. If any Feehan fans know of others - drop me a line.

out

ps. sorry for the review rewrite - 3 kids and writing, not a lot of sleep. Day jobs suck.

I thought this was a particularly good entry into the series. I love the series books that bring back old characters and we got to see quite a few here, even if some appearances were very brief. We only get to see Gregori quite briefly :(

This book really expanded the mythology so I enjoyed that. There have a been a few novels in this series that were just sex scene after sex scene and I found myself tuning out as I waited for the story to pick back up. YMMV, but I only require a couple of sex scenes if I'm not reading something labeled as erotica. I think the first time is always significant and then maybe another to cement an emotional breakthrough or something similar. Otherwise, fade-to-black is cool with me.

This follows closely upon the heels of book #11. That one was novella length, but I think it's a necessary read to truly appreciate this book (#16) and it is a very enjoyable installment on its own. We are reunited with Jubal and Gabrielle (the heroine's siblings from book #11 ) and their adventures in the cave are very central to this book. I really like them both and hope they get their own romances in the future.

Re: the audio - I've said this before, but I'll say it again: Richard Ferrone is not my favorite narrator. He doesn't do accents and IMHO he sort of sounds like a sitcom dad. Reminds me of one of those dudes that narrate a show or movie that took place in the past, like 'The Wonder Years' or 'A Christmas Story'. Both are great entertainment, but not particularly sexy. I can see that Ferrone would be good at narrating certain types of books, but romance doesn't seem to be one of those. I really don't see why Feehan is so married to using him. There have been a few other 'fill-in' narrators in this series and I've enjoyed most of them far more.

Due to this, I often wonder if I find myself rolling my eyes at some attempts at humor because I am iffy on the narrator's delivery or because Feehan isn't particularly funny. I like a well done snarky one-liner or pop culture reference, but it's an art. Not everyone can do it and that's fine. I just wish those who can't wouldn't go there. Then again... YMMV. I know I use YMMV A LOT, but it is very true when you're dealing with something as subjective as the enjoyment of a book, humor, and even opinions on a narrator. Some narrators are beloved by many, but so-so or downright annoying to others.

I like this series. I really do. But, this is book #16 and the formula is getting a bit stale.

1. Dark, handsome Carpathian male on the verge of turning into a vampire suddenly finds his lifemate in a human or part-human woman
2. Human or part-human female hell bent on being resisitant to said Carpathian and his "dominate" ways DESPITE the fact that her panties get in a twist everytime she looks at him
3. A few vampire battles
4. Healing from said battles (chanting, soil, mystical healing through body invasion)
5. A few sex scenes and exchange of blood
6. Conversion of female to Carpathian
7. Final battle scene with a Master vampire, always more powerful than the last

This book gets a little more into the whole "mage" thing, which was cool, but the formula was still the same. The fight scenes were much bloodier and more brutal than previous, almost war-like. Which was also a nice change. But, it dragged on too long.

I'll read the others in this series, but I'm really hoping that it gets changed up a little bit.

Natalya Shonski is a vampire hunter, descended from a revered line of Carpathians known as the Dragonseekers and the most powerful mage in history. She hates and fears both vampires and Carpathians alike and has spent her life fighting them. Carpathian Vikirnoff van Schreider is dangerously close to turning vampire when he discovers Natalya and realises that she is his lifemate. But Natalya is unlike any other Carpathian he has ever known - dangerous in her own right, she refuses to let him fight her battles, and she infuriates him with her cheerful disregard of his demands. But a sinister, mysterious power is after Natalya, and Virkirnoff has to convince her not only to trust him with her heart, but with her life as well.

This book had much more action to it which made it much more enjoyable. Compared to the other books it didn't follow an exact pattern which was proberly why I enjoyed it that much more.

Absolutely awful! Terrible cliche romance-novel characters (oh, she's such a STRONG-WILLED FIGHTING WOMAN WHO CAN'T BE TAMED, oh, he's such a MANLY MAN, THE "STRONG SILENT" TYPE) and so mary-sue it was untrue (oh, she's only amazing at fighting and spells, she's only super intelligent and beautiful and also can just happen to turn into a tiger, huh?).

Read this book at random out of a terrible selection at a hostel whilst travelling - I had no idea about the Carpathian storyline, and upon finishing, no further desire to learn any more. I gathered that they're some kind of pre-vampire vampire-hunters and unless they find themselves a lifemate they turn into vampires themselves. Hence, the plot of the novel is mainly soulbonding the two main characters together and then a few evil vampire/mage fights and then a lot of horrificly bad sex scenes. If that floats your boat, then go for it, but personally thought it was horrendous.

A great book on its own, but I also feel this is an instrumental book to the whole series as the power and purpose of Xavier and mages start to be known. It also introduces the reader to the Dragonseeker lineage in more detail and I am loving the storyline! Both main characters in this book are charismatic, strong and crazy talented. Fun book and love how it finished their story but not the mage or dragonseeker story line!

Definitely my favorite Carpathian novel so far! I loved Vikirnoff...I found him oddly sweet. I liked that he understood Natalya's need to fight and accepted her for who she was. Other Carpathians have not been so understanding.

I enjoyed seeing more of Dominic and can't wait to get to his book. Looking ahead and seeing that Razvan has his own book, I guess I can assume he's not evil or dead. I would like to know his story.

It's been a long break for me since I read my last Carpathian book, and I'm glad I picked back up with this one.
