Owning Corey

Rate this book
WHEN introverted doctor Ben Hardy's high maintenance girlfriend wants to introduce a little more kink into their love life, he doesn't expect it to come in the form of the hunky EMT who just moved to Blackwood. Ben's not gay, but DAMN! He can definitely see why all the women turn to mush when the new guy's around. Baby blue eyes, flirtatious smile, body of an underwear model...

The prospect of being naked in the same room with him is horrifying. So why the hell is Ben actually considering it?

COREY Butler desperately needs to leave his shady past behind, and the microscopic town of Blackwood is just the place to do it. No drama, no danger, no sleeping under bridges... What he doesn't need is a huge crush on someone who's completely out of his league. When Dr. Hardy's gorgeous girlfriend propositions him for a threesome, he knows the smart thing would be to say no.

Of course it would. But then Corey's never been known for making smart decisions.

MFM PWP turned into Cinderfella-Insta-Love-Fest

This was blessedly a free read.

Because it was bad, so bad.

It started with a strictly straight sexy and rich Doctor who has self-esteem issues (suspend disbelieve) who dates the hottest b!tch in town. This sexy female wants a threesome with the sexy new guy in town. And then the three get sexy together.

Maybe you can smell a theme here...right, everybody is sexy.

So after dumping the b!tch, because, really, she wanted a threesome, she is a bad person, oh, and a gold digger, the sexy new guy can move into the pool house of the sexy Doctor, because when you are shy and don't have friends, but self-esteem issues, what better to do than to invite someone you don't know at all to move in.
Clever move by the totally smart Doctor. Who is very sexy. And incredibly rich. Which is why he is afraid of gold diggers. Which makes the moving in of and buying expensive stuff for sexy new guy a really wonderful idea...

Insert another boring threesome.

The writing didn't help and don't let me start about the dialogues...

'nough said.

PS: Just saw that it says in the title "From M/M Gay Romance Author" - just a small thing, but really? M/M Gay Romance?

I think I enjoyed this story more than I should, and certainly more than it deserves, given the staggering amount of misogyny here. The women are all stupid, lascivious, and/or manipulative, and the main characters' view of them (the narration is alternating first-person POV) is hideous.

To wit:
I'm afraid that if I invite one over here, within a week she'll have her little pink toothbrush in my bathroom, then her millions of shoes in my closet, then her diet food in my fridge, then she'll want to redecorate in pastels and florals...

And:
See, this is exactly why you don't get some bitch's clothes in your closet and things in your house.

Oh, and let's not forget:
She's in that needful place that women sometimes get, when you could slap them around if you wanted and they'd still beg for you.

There's a lot more in this vein.

To be clear, the other end of the spectrum isn't much better; I've encountered enough Mary Sues and paragons of virtuous motherhood to last a lifetime. I read m/m romance for the male characters. Authors, if you can't write realistic women, don't even bother.

There are two m/f/m scenes in which the women are pretty much a pesky afterthought. (Again, why bother?)

The storytelling is of the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink variety: instalove, GFY to HEA within a month, , , and the obligatory subplot. Despite all this, the writing isn't bad, and I was interested enough in Ben and Corey to want to read to the end. I feel icky, though.

Where do I start? This book was going fine to about the ¾ mark and then it just came to a screeching halt literally drowning in ridiculousness.

Ben, who is a straight, small town, hot stud doctor, (Chief of Staff no less) falls for new EMT Corey who is also not gay (well he is but he isn’t). Anyhoo, they decide to have a ménage with Ben’s current fuck of the week Christina at her suggestion, to spice and add some kink to the relationship.

Things don’t work out with this chick and they end up later trying another ménage with co-worker Julie. During this ménage Ben and Corey somewhat discover their insta love for one another.

Corey has a dark past which comes back to haunt him and trouble ensues

Ok. It starts getting really good when we learn that Dr Ben’s grandfather was a bank robber & serial killer back in the 1950s and pulled off several robberies, leaving Ben with millions of dollars from these robberies and obviously, Dr Ben has wisely invested these ill-gotten gains and made even more money!

For me the best bit was when

There is plenty of other ludicrous stuff to keep you laughing right to the end, including the swing in personality of Dr Ben from an unfriendly or cold guy, to one who is suddenly in touch with his inner-self and apologising for his antisocial behaviour in front of people he doesn’t really know all that well.

“Everyone claps and whistles, and I don’t mind admitting it makes me feel great. Who knew bearing your soul in a cheesy speech could be so rewarding?

Apart from the fact that I felt the two MC’s had zero chemistry, this book seemed to take on epic proportions of outrageous sub-plot drama , and ending when Ben & Corey finally become "two broken people who have made a choice to become whole together".

Can I suggest you might want to watch Days of Our Lives if you want this much drama, it only takes an hour an episode!

I've had this one sitting my reader for a while, forgot I had it. Interesting blurb which intrigued me because I enjoy a good GFY story but this ended up not working for me at all.

I don't remember the last time I've disliked a character as much as I did with Dr. Ben Hardy, he's a douchey egomaniac with a god complex. I didn't find Corey much better, tbh.

I thought it may end up being a story of redemption so I stuck with it but the threesome action got old really fast and dragged both MCs down in my estimation. This turned out to be an odd read for me and close to DNF several times. Unlikeable MCs surrounded by equally unlikeable secondary characters in an unrealistic storyline. Pass.

3.5 stars!

J.F. Harding is a rock star. I love his narrations.

This was a good story. A newly minted EMT escaping a rough life meets small town, heart throb doctor. It takes a couple of scenes for them to get the women out of the way. But once they do, they are off to the races. Luuurve! It's GFY - old school style and I totally enjoyed these guys falling for each other.

I’m not sure what possessed me to buy this book, but I’m glad I did. This story is the type of sugar sweet I like. Gay for you, insta love and all of that crap. I know some people hate that. I’m glad I’m not one of them. Fun read with a good storyline. Oh, forgot to mention. It's hot! Two MFM ménage scenes. The rest are MM.

Readers beware there are some girly parts in two scenes, but not enough to distract me from how hot Corey and Ben are when they are together. Some really smoldering scenes between the two of them. And I surprised myself with how much I actually liked the angst that kept them from seeing it could be a long term relationship. Really enjoyed their journey to an HEA. Now I want to read more from this author.

Sooo, I saw this on the new and best-selling list on amazon, tried the sample, bought it and started reading at once. Then something funny happened - the 'voice' of Ben was getting on my nerves and I had to take a break. Then I tried to finish my currently reading books and returned to this one and what can I say, suddenly I fell in love with it! I got totally gripped and it was a joy to follow Ben's development from the anti-social guy opening up to Corey and as a result forming a friendship with his co-workers as well. Even the GFY between Ben and Corey worked. This story was rather low on drama, thankfully, the arising problems were solved rather uneventful, but it kept me entertained during my long bus rides this weekend and I couldn't put it down. It was exactly what I was in the mood to read and therefore 5 stars.

ETA: Two m/m/f scenes in this book.

3.5 stars. I liked this cinderfella story and found myself becoming invested in both main characters (although I had to keep myself from being hypercritical of the medical parts of the story). The melodrama at the end was a bit overdone for me (and too neatly resolved)- otherwise my rating would have been higher.

Loved this book. No offense to the ladies but the one complaint I had were the sex scenes with women but I read on because I felt they were somewhat important to the plot.

Audio Book Review.
Book: 4.5 stars
Narrator J.F Harding : 5 stars

Every now and again I do slip the odd audiobook into my 'reading' regime, but this is the first time I've ever reviewed one because... honestly...I find it much harder to retain a storyline when listening, than taking in the written word on page. My mind tends to wander if I'm not seeing the words, especially at night if I'm listening in bed and a bit dopey to start with. Dozing off, then coming around to find I've missed a good chunk of the story is not unknown. LOL—Rewind time!

I'd already purchased and read Owning Corey about four months ago, and really loved it, so when I saw it was coming out on Audible, it was a no brainer buy; especially as having already bought the Kindle version, I got it for a ridiculously low price through Audible's Whyspersync and saved a credit...cos I'm savvy like that, Haha. Having read it already, made reviewing much easier and the addition of a great narrator helped too, but more about that later. First....

The Story

I really enjoy Maris Black's writing style and her not so predictable 'Gay for you' style plots just seem to mesh well with my personal likes in m/m. Always hot, and oozing with the sort of sexual tension and chemistry that if it was live action would set your Kindle on fire; put that together with an attention grabbing backstory with a touch of suspense thrown in, and I'm happy. Told from both Ben, who is completely straight when the book begins, and a perceived to be straight chick magnet Corey's point of view, I was totally engrossed by how everything played out in the book. This one coming a close second to Kage, which is my favourite Maris Black up to now...her Pinned series is very enjoyable too...

This book started on such a high note for me and then just went off the rails. I loved Ben in the beginning: the cold, impersonal doctor who can't make friends and is really a jerk. But he turns into a person I don't even recognize by the end of the book. He becomes an overemotional mess. I really wish his character had been more consistent. Yes, he needed to change and his relationship with Corey forced him to open up and show some vulnerability, but did he have to turn into such a sap? He really needed to man up. And the whole backstory with Corey and his shady past was a waste of space. I liked the writing and there are parts that are really great here, but Ben and Corey go from being these attractive, strapping men to two overwrought hormonal teenagers by the end. (Sorry, but that's just my opinion.)

I just love this story!!! Dr Ben Hardy chief of staff and Corey Butler EMT. They just made this amazing couple. At times the story felt like it was on speed - there were parts I would have loved to be a bit slower and more personal - but I still loved it!!!

Audible Review

Overall 3 out of 5 stars
Performance 4 out of 5 stars
Story 3 out of 5 stars

A bit disappointed.
Once again JF Harding did a great job with his narration. Unfortunately this story wasn't quite what I was hoping it would be. I liked the premise, especially the gay for you trope, I liked when Corey and Ben were together, I enjoyed the back and forth between them as they figured things out. I just didn't like the way things came about for them to realize they wanted to be together. I didn't appreciate how the women were treated, it made me very uncomfortable. Not so much what happened with the girlfriend, because she got what she wanted, but what came after. I think if those couple of instances had been left out I definitely would have enjoyed the story more. I did like the twist there towards the end, it kind of came out of left field, but it added a little suspense to the story and gave us a bit more background on Corey.
I was happy that once Ben realized Corey was truly who he wanted he was all in, because they were pretty great together.

It wasn’t horrible until the last 20%. Before that, it was terrible with a side of “does this author hate women?
That was annoying as hell, but I could get past it until random shit is it started happening. It was so ridiculous and totally unnecessary. I’m kind of laughing remembering how odd it was.

This book is M/M But.... The first half of this book is way more M/F with some M/F/M ménage action added in. If you can get past all the vagina with the M/F action, this book is actually decent. The story is well written with no editing issues.
Ben is a Doctor in a small town dating a Nurse at the hospital he works at. His "girlfriend" asks the new EMT Ben if he would Like to make her fantasy come true having a Threesome with the hot Doctor. It all goes downhill from there. After the 3some Ben breaks up with her. Corey and Ben fight the attraction to each other while having sex with other girls, and still having threesomes thrown in with each other. It takes them a while (most of the book) for them to admit their attraction and feelings to each other. The ending has a twist thrown in which seemed a little odd and misplaced to me, the book would have been fine without it. And then its just a rush to the finish of this book. I think a little more thought could have gone into letting these guys get their HEA at the end.
Audio - J.F. Harding did a good job with this narration. He made sure that you could noticeably hear the difference between the two men in this story as well as doing a good job on all the female parts as well.

There were times, mostly in the first half, when I really did not like this book. I briefly considered not finishing it a time or two. I didn't like the tone, and I wasn't sure I liked the characters. I am not, however, one who easily gives up on a book--so, I kept going.

The second part of the book was much better, though there were still times that I rolled my eyes. Some situations just seemed a little too far fetched, and many issues were just too quickly and easily resolved.

It was, for the most part, a fun read, but I must admit that I skipped over many sections. Unfortunately, there were too many times when my heart was just not involved, and emotional investment is what I'm really looking for.

Oh so good!

This book is great! Hot sexy scenes, and emotion. Pulled me in from the start. M/M romance at its best, in my opinion! I'll read more of Ms. Black's work!

4.5 star review by Dan

The author has written a very believable story with full living and breathing characters. To be honest, I’ve read it at least four times. I enjoy it each time as much as the first time.

The book starts out by introducing us to the unapproachable Dr. Ben Hardy, the Chief of Staff at the small urgent care hospital in Blackwood, Georgia. The people in the town and at the hospital love him, even though his nickname unbeknownst to him, is Dr. Ice at the hospital. The scene is a staff Christmas party and Ben is over it. He is not a party person, and one person in particular, the overly handsome new EMT, Corey, is particularly bugging him. Ben’s girlfriend, Christina, has her hands all over Corey. Imagine Ben’s surprise when Christina suggests the three of them ditch the party and go back to her house and watch a movie and drink a few beers. That surprise is quickly surpassed when they get to Christina’s house and she throws on a porn movie with two men and a woman and announces she wants to have sex with both of them.

A couple days later, they agree. Who knew they would end up being more turned on by each other when they double penetrated Christina? From there Ms. Black takes us on a journey of self-discovery and the de-thawing of Dr. Ice.

What will happen when Ben and Corey get to know each other better? Who is the sleazy guy, Allister, who shows up one day claiming to be a long lost friend of Corey? Who is the private detective skulking around? And finally, who is driving a Dartz armored SUV through the streets of Blackwood? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

A word of warning. If you are looking for a true m/m/f book, this one isn’t for you. There are a couple m/m/f sex scenes, but the women are supplemental to the story and treated more as a means to an end of getting Ben and Corey sexually involved. Christina is written as a gold digger and some comments in the book might shock some people and make them think Ms. Black is disrespecting women. Those comments need to be read in context, particularly the one about the pink toothbrush showing up. The author isn’t bashing women, she is broadening the character of Ben to show you how he feels, and part of his basic insecurities. I’ve always said a successful author is one that can instill strong feelings in the reader while they are reading the book. From some other reviews I’ve read on this book, I can tell you she did with this one!

I’ve read this book four times for a reason. In my opinion, Ms. Black’s writing is fantastic. As an aside, thank you Ms. Black for expanding my knowledge. I now know what a Russian built Dartz is, and after my Google search I know it is available with Whale Penis Leather seats. Really.I couldn’t make that up!

I really enjoyed this book and recommend you buy it today.

4-4.5 Heart Audio Book Review by Paul

The reader is immediately taken into the world of Ben Hardy, a successful chief-of-staff at a small town’s hospital. Ben’s got a high maintenance girlfriend and he’s definitely NOT gay. But his girlfriend is trying to lure him into a kinky session with another man. At a party she finds just the man she needs: Corey. And this is where the story starts, but Maris Black is taken her time to build the tension brilliantly. But the reader wants to see how close Ben and Corey will be together. Luckily Black is an m/m writer, so we know all will be fine in the end. But the twist and turns she takes to get there keep the reader engaged. The first time Ben and Corey are involved in a ménage a trois their orgasms coincide, and Ben’s attention is fully focused on Corey, and this worries him. Why is that tension there? Is there more..? Throughout the book Black releases more information about Coreys background, totally believable and very fitting to his previous behavior. It makes the reader understand why Corey is living the life he’s living. But even Ben has got his share of secrets. And without revealing the full storyline, I can tell you that it will surprise you. I loved the way the author keeps the reader enthralled and by well-timed release of more information keeps this story well-flowing and coherent. A special hooray for the way Black writes the sex-scenes: Hot and mesmerizing, even the m/m/f scenes are like I imagine them to be.

Enjoyed this.
The meaning of the title seems a bit odd throughout as Corey is a strong, sef assured guy but it all becomes clear at the end!
Readers who don't like any females getting it on with the MC's should be warned there are females in the mix. I don't mind and the scenes were hot and brought Corey and Ben closer to getting together.
I'm not sure if I'd class this as Ben being 'gayfor Corey' or that his inability to maintain a relationship with a woman was masking his true sexuality. Anyway, Ben goes on a big see-change of a journey once Corey hits town. I enjoyed the sparks and banter between them. Corey's has a past as big as his.......and they do come crawling out of the closet gradually.
So overall, good, fun read about two guys bumping heads and bits before finding their place together. Good fast paced writing style.

***Audiobook*** I have to admit, I didn't really know what to expect with this one. Among my GR friends, I saw some DNFs and several low star ratings. But, having just read the KAGE series, I am a new fan of Maris Black and of the narrator J.F. Harding. Since the audiobook is Whispersynced it wasn't that expensive, so I decided to give it a try. And I was pleasantly surprised! I really liked it. Yeah there may have been some vaginas in the story (gasp!) and I may have had to suspend reality a bit to get through parts of it, but overall I really liked it. Excellent narration, 4.5 stars from me!!
