In the town of Belle Ridge there are doctors, lawyers and teachers... but there is only one vampire. Will Leighton has become an expert in making a life for himself amongst the unsuspecting small-town inhabitants, as the high school history teacher. He has spent hundreds of years crafting an identity and routine that make him feel almost human, but he is always missing that important final element, love.

Ashton Wallace is beautiful, smart, and angry. She was forced into an eternal existence, and now her family has moved her away from everything and everyone she knows. In Belle Ridge she is supposed to finish high school and start her life again, but how do you make plans for the next several centuries?

Will has never met another of his kind, and is immediately intrigued by Ashton. He longs to show her that the perceived vampire lifestyle, so popular in storybooks, is far from reality...but will she let him be a friend and guide in this new existence? Can Ashton accept Will into her life, or will she be led astray by a dark stranger with whom she shares an unknown connection?

Opening Lines
“In the town of Belle Ridge, there were doctors, lawyers, and teachers. But there was only one vampire, and he happened to be the high school history teacher.

So what made me want to read Unrequited? The cover. Seriously, it's so simple yet so bold. My eyes were instantly drawn to the lips and the heart on it. I also love the contrast on the white/pale skin background with black font and red accents. It just makes the cover stand out more than it usually would if other colours were chosen.

If your use to the world of vampires were they can't come out during the day, drink blood, can't digest food, can't step into a church and all those classic vampire things than Unrequited will definitely be a unique read for you! Emily Shaffer has completely re-vamped (see what I did there?!) what we know about vampires, in Unrequited they can go into churches, be out during the day, and eat food, although it's more of an act to blend in.

Love Triangle - I really don't like reading books that involve love triangles because it always leads to someones heart being broken, but yet I seem to continue reading books that have them! I was instantly Team Will from the moment we first meet him, he's just such a swoon worthy character! And Griffin, well I disliked Griffin from the moment we met him and only started to like him a little bit within the last four chapters. I'm hoping that in the next book Ashton will come to her sense and pick Will! And if Emily Shaffer can throw in a love interest for Griffin then everyone will have a happy ending.

“Without a single word, he knew Ashton hadn't come back to Belle Ridge for him. Her eyes, her beautiful green eyes, didn’t hold the same look for him they once had. He couldn’t move. He could scarcely breathe. In less than an instant he felt like everything he had planned and wanted had evaporated into the air. All that remained was his bruised and broken heart and the memory of a stolen moment in time.

Emily Shaffer is a very descriptive writer. I felt every emotion that Will, Ashton and even Griffin felt. At times though I felt like the story was rushed and I would have preferred for there to be more of a development with Ashton's feelings towards both Will and Griffin. I liked having the story told from both Will and Ashton's point-of-view, this was the perfect way to really capture each characters emotions and thoughts, however I would have liked to have seen more from Griffin's perspective.

Overall, Unrequited was a unique and fast paced read. We're left with a serious cliffhanger and I'm definitely intrigued to read the sequel to find out what will happen next! TEAM WILL!!!

REVIEW:
Even though I love my shifter books I always have a soft spot for vampires, especially when there is romance and some unique storytelling. Lets just say Shaffer is pretty awesome not taking the typical vampire story, but kicking it up a notch having vampires be pretty much human. Vampires in this book don’t sparkle or hiss at the sight of a cross, nope these guys are pretty much like ninjas; they are hiding among the humans pretending to be normal.

So here is the real twist, Will our lead male vampire believed he’s the only one of his kind that exist. But then he meets Ashton, thus an interested teacher student relationship begins. Will is very, very old and thought he’d spend the rest of his life alone, but with Ashton appearing, the two get to know each other. Even with all the tension (thus Will being the one falling for Ashton more), their chemistry is undeniable,. I liked these two together, even though Will is the easier one to connect too. I think Ashton will start to grow on me but I had a few issues with how she treated Will. All in all Ashton has to go through a lot, her life changes in a terrible way to begin with and reading from her point of view I could just imagine how hard it is to have your life suddenly change.

Overall there is a lot that happens in this first book, I almost wish this was a bit longer and we got more details and background to each of the characters. Especially with the introduction to Griffin, I can’t wait to know more about him. Now don’t get me wrong I adore Will, but I always love the bad boys, especially the ones I can tell the readers are suppose to hate. But nonetheless Griffin has come into the picture and created the dreaded love triangle, but I’m hoping Ashton comes to terms with what her heart really wants. Or at least let Will find a love that will cherish him a bit more than she has shown. The best tidbits about this was reading from Will’s point of view, as you do get Ashton, I loved how Shaffer created the voice for Will and it was interesting to see from his perspective.

In the end this was a quick read with a nice twist to the vampire genre, the ending was a bit of a killer and not sure how I felt about it. But it does get me curious to see what’s going to happen next.

RECOMMENDATION:
This is a young adult/new adult paranormal novel. Fans of the Vampire Academy series and the Morganville Vampire series will enjoy this interesting romantic take on vampire with Unrequited by Emily Shaffer.

Tiffany's Review:

This book kept me interested but in the end I was a little disappointed. Ashton is a normal high school girl who makes the mistake of taking a drink from a stranger at a party. The next thing she remembers is waking up in the hospital with two puncture wounds on her neck! Then she starts to notice weird changes...could she now be a vampire?! Will is a high school teacher that had a similar strange encounter...600 years ago! When Ashton moves to Will's town he thinks he has finally found someone like him! Can he get Ashton to fall in love with him?! It looks promising until Griffin finds Ashton! Who is this new vampire, Griffin? What will happen with this trip?! I give this one 3 stars.

This is a fresh an interesting take on Vampires. The paranormal elements are quite light in this story and just add something extra. I also liked how there was a jump forwards in time of several years as it stopped the story from dragging.

A great NA paranormal romance novel.

I’d say more of a 1.5 because I did finish and I didn’t hate it, but it was a very quick story. I like my stories to have a bit of depth, whereas the writing style of this one seemed to be one paragraph then one month later. Insta-love galore too.

Basically, it didn’t feel like it had a lot of structure and ended on a cliff hanger.

What if you were turned into a vampire before you had even started your adult life? Your future stolen from you by a creature of myth? All hope of being normal and living a normal life gone? What if you didn't need to drink blood and could walk in daylight without suffering? What if you were immortal but could still blend in with everyone else? Will is a teacher at a high school in a small picture perfect town. He seems just like everyone else, no one knows his secret. Will is actually a vampire. He thinks he is the only one. He is all alone until a new student shows up. A student too old to really be in high school. She is also a vampire. She thought she, too, was all alone. They seemed destined to be together, not alone anymore.

What if you were turned into a vampire before you had even graduated high school? Ashton is facing just that after a night at a party left her close to death. Ashton is left to deal with her "condition" and tries to continue on with her life in as normal a way as possible. With her parents support she ends up in a new school, ready to start as normal a life as she can. The only problem is that someone in this town knows she is different. This town already has a resident vampire, and he teaches at her new school.

The vampires of this book are unlike any I have ever read. They don't have all the drawbacks I would think a vampire would have. The author reinvents vampire for the reader. It seemed just a bit convenient to do this to fit the story. I didn't really like that aspect but perhaps I am a bit jaded (my first love was The Vampire Lestat). I enjoyed the writers style and the story was well written. I had no idea where this story was going to go. I loved how the writer injected little flashbacks that helped me understand the characters.

This story takes us into the minds and lives of Ashton and Will. Ashton is shell shocked and unwilling to surrender to immortality, saying goodbye to everything that makes her human. Will said goodbye to those things long ago. His life has become trying to blend in and enjoy life as it comes to him. Being a teacher, Will tries to take Ashton under his wing. He tries to help her deal with the changes that have occurred and come to terms with her new immortality. He falls in love with the first vampire he sees, Ashton. He wants to be with her and end his lonely days. Ashton is reluctant to give in to him. That would mean admitting she is different. Right now she just wants to seem normal for as long as she can. She postpones her affections for Will until she graduates college. Everything is inevitable until she meets Griffin.

Griffin is so different from Will. He seems to be everything that Will is not, yet Ashton is so drawn to him. Now there are three. In Unrequited, Ashton ends up in a bad love triangle. I had no idea where the author was leading us. I didn't know who Ashton would pick until the last few pages. I still don't know if that choice makes her happy or if she changes her mind after one disagreement. I was really enjoying this read. Then I found out that this is a series book. I guess I have to read the sequel to find out what happens next.

Unrequited is a vampire book. ÌýIt is marked as a new adult novel, but it felt more as a young adult. It does span the college years of Ashton, so I think that is where the New Adult element comes into play. But it is completely clean so it would work for readers of young adult as well. These are a different twist on the conventional vampire. I enjoyed Emily Shaffer's view on them. It was strange how few of them there were in a world where vampires existed though. I really felt for Will. He felt completely alone. He honestly felt like there was a good chance that he was the only vampire out there. He is teaching at a local high school, and then he meets Ashton. And the story begins.

We get to know Ashton first basically through the story of her attack and change. It was really traumatic and I couldn't help but feel for her. I completely got her desire to be as normal as possible right now because now is the time that the least amount of questions will be asked. Right now she basically is a high school student. So it made complete sense to me what she wanted. What I didn't understand was why she had to be so rude to Will. I have such a soft spot in my heart for Will. He is the nicest guy. I didn't always understand why he picked Ashton. At times I felt like it was because she was the only female he knew like him. He honestly seemed too good for her. But his intentions seemed to come from the best place so I still rooted for the two of them for his stake.

When Griffin came into the picture it obviously complicated things. My initial impression of him wasn't correct. I will be the first to admit that I got it wrong when it comes to him. The book felt a bit rushed and choppy at parts. I would have liked for the story to have been stretched out a bit more, with some more detail added in, but the story still sucked me in. I couldn't stop reading because I honestly didn't know what was going to happen. Some things were predictable but not everything. Not the main things. It has been a while since I have read a story about just vampires. I liked it but like I said, these vampires seemed to be very different. They didn't need to drink blood to survive and the sun only made them tired if they were out in it for a long time. So they seemed more just like immortals to me. The book ended at a pretty bad spot in the story, with one heck of a cliff hanger. I have no idea what is going to happen next and that alone is enough to make me want to continue the series. Fans of vampires should check out Unrequited.

This story I was torn with. I was torn because I only found one of the characters redeemable. the other characters I just didn’t like. I liked the story, I liked the concept, I even liked the plot but Ashton just really really didn’t get me to like her. Will I loved. Will I found to be amazing. Ashton meh.. Ashton’s brother love. Ashton meh

the story is interesting. We have a man who is lonely thinking he is the only one of his kind and suddenly in his town comes another. A young woman who just turned and is angry. Angry lost and confused. But she doesn’t act that way. In fact when Will offers the olive branch she rebuffs him and treats him like dirt. She really is just horrid to him. Will is kind and patient and caring and all Ashton ever does is put him down. She walks away from him, treats him like dirt and than is like oh what have I done. I like him I do but he stifles me, he wants to control me, I want to live to learn but Will will keep me from that. She thinks he doesn’t want her to spread her wings but it’s the opposite. Will wants to help her adjust and not make his mistakes he even goes as far as to give her his diary so she can see that she is not alone in what she is feeling. Does she care? no. she just tosses it aside because really what can he teach her. When she decides to act on her feelings she than pulls away again and asks him to wait. Will does because he is just a really great guy.

But again Ashton is selfish and self centered in my opinion and crushes him yet again. She comes back and is torn. she likes him but doesn’t feel he can be there for her. she meets another at school who she is mesmerized with. this is one that I kind of like but I am on the fence about. I think because I am Pro-Will all the way. But Ashton she plays Will. Keeps him at bay while she decides yet again what she wants. She treats him just as badly though. It’s like did you not learn from the past. When Ashton decides, Will is having a little crisis. But does Ashton see this no she just sees how dare Will after he claims to love me and have waited for me, I kept him on a string and now that I have decided he dares to say no well I never. I mean really Ashton it isn’t always about you. did you think maybe after you rejected the first guy’s love and crushed him and than went to Will and he acted unusual that something was up? No you thought well no one wants me now and went to lick your wounds. It’s the first rejected man who comes to you and has you see reason.

When all is said and done Will Ashton and her maker see each other with new eyes. Will loves Ashton and so does her maker. She loves them both the question is what will happen next.

a interesting intriguing tale that will have you wanting to yell at Ashton the whole time and feeling for Will. I am curious to see what is next for this trio

GAH! Yep y'all guessed it it’s a MOTHER-EFFIN Cliffhanger!!

gun animated GIF

I seriously had no clue there was going to be another one. I’m glad there is because Ashton has some splainin to do! Lol not only are there two totally different guys vying for her. At this point I honestly believe she doesn’t deserve either of them. One things for sure this girl has a lot of room for improvement. I know her personality stemmed from this sudden change altering her existence For-e-ver and the guys have had centuries to come to terms with it…ANNNNND thats why I havent lit the torches or pulled out the pitch forks…BUUUUUUT I truly hope she comes to grips with at least whats in her heart soon and stick with it. I’m looking forward to what the next book will hold and what the title will be hm

My Wish
If wishes were fishes we’d all cast a _____
Well here’s my net, Ashton to figure out what the heck she wants and asap.
Whomever gets left in the dust to find someone because believe it or not I too have fallen for both Will and Ashton.
last but def not least
We need to turn up the heat a notch(or twenty) This is the first Swoon Romance I’ve read that didn’t have an *ahem *cough *wink scene but I get it Ashton’s a smart girl and doesn’t want to rush into anything. I on the other hand want her to CHOOSE CHOOSE CHOOSE! :)

My Rating
3.5 Party, Solo Cup, Roofie, Woods, Year, History Teacher, Parent meeting, Dance, Promise, Blip, Griffin, Carnival, Confession, Discovery, Gwen, Quarry, Realization. For a different type of Vampire pick up this interesting read!

I have a love-hate relationship with vampires. Most of the time, I prefer them to be either funny or mean and nasty, worthy representatives of the Dracula tradition and Vlad the Impaler. Romantic stuff generally leaves me cold and I might as well ‘fess up. I read the first book in the Twilight series because, as a bookstore owner, I sort of had to but—gasp!—I detested it. Yes, the truth is out, I’m not a fan of sparkly. So, why on earth did I have any interest in Unrequited?

Two things in the description drew me in. First, the idea of a high school teacher and a student niggled at me. Was the author really going to go there? Really? Second, there was the twist that there are so few vampires in Ms. Shaffer’s world that Will could have gone 200 years without ever meeting any others.

Ashton is an interesting character but I must say her parents are remarkably accepting of her, um, condition, and I can only suppose it’s because they have little choice. She herself is handling the whole thing better than you might anticipate from a high school senior and I was happy to avoid the histrionics we so often see.

Will and Griffin, on the other hand, are so, well, nice (it takes Griffin a while to get there) that they irritated me even while I thought they were pretty good guys. As for the love triangle—I wish every author would forget they ever heard of such a thing.

Because some of the elements of vampirism we’ve come to expect are missing, I kind of wondered why the author chose to make her male characters vampires in the first place. Why not another kind of supe that naturally fits into the human world more easily?

The ending was put together to lead the reader to the second book and I have no problem with that. I did feel shortchanged with the altercation that takes place at the end, a prime example of telling rather than showing but, fortunately, that sort of writing style is rare in Unrequited.

I have to mention that I appreciated the care that Ms. Shaffer and her publisher took in the construction of this ebook. Very few typos or other construction errors came to my attention and that’s a pleasure in today’s quicksand of ebook production. I do wonder, though, why Unrequited is not available on Nook and I hope that will be remedied soon.

Within the first few pages I knew how this review was going to go. The writing starts off terrible - it felt like a young author who used a lot of adjectives to make up for telling and not showing. But I stuck it out because I had agreed to review the book. Eventually the writing gets better.

The author has clearly tried to put a unique spin on vampires, however my big issue here is that they aren't very vampirey. For example, they don't need to drink blood, they can be out during the day time, they can go to church, they don't have to be invited into someone's home in order to enter..... so, they are basically immortals who could drink blood if they wanted? And what's the deal with Ashton and Will both thinking they are the only vampires? Someone obviously created them!

The first half of the book is extremely dull. Ashton tries to go about her life, Will wants a relationship with her, la-di-da. But on the plus side, Unrequited seems to be the perfect title for this book.

Then there is this strange break in the book where we jump to "four years later" - it did not feel natural at all. Now, I am at about the 54% mark and all of a sudden we have a small plot twist. But, this dark strangerand his role are a bit predictable. Then we have another stranger brought into the mix, which feels like the author's attempt to thicken the plot, but it's actually pointless because it's handled way too easily.

And THEN, the mother of all pet-peeves happens: the book ends. Just like that it's over. Clearly the author is going for a cliffhanger, but it was actually just a pause in the story.

I gave this book two stars because despite it's faults, I was interested enough to keep reading.

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

In the mood for a supernatural story ? One that is filled with Vampires living among us mere humans undetected ? When Ashton went to a party , she did not expect to be drugged and then attacked but unfortunately her attack wasn't your regular kind and it left her one of the undead -a Vampire. Now her family wanting to get away from everyone and start fresh have moved to a smalltown where Ashton will have to try and fit in but also learn the Vampire way of living. She never in her wildest dreams imagined that she would be spending the rest of her life including the last year of school as a Vampire. Ashton will soon discover that there are other vampires out there besides the one who bit her and turned her into what she is. One of them happens to be working as a teacher at the school she is about to start. For Will , he is over 200 years old and in all his vampire life has never met another vampire until now. He must get to know her and soon the pair with a lot of reluctance along the way from Ashton strike up a friendship which turns to romance. The year breezes by and it's time for Ashton to head off to college , she does and while at college she meets another vampire Gabriel - this one is has a dark side and is different to Will in every aspect. When she returns home , which male will Ashton choose to live with forever ? Will she choose Gentlemanly Will or Bad Boy Gabriel ?

In Unrequited, the vampires are different especially their weaknesses. I liked the concept of the vampires that the author has written but there's more to Unrequited. The title Unrequited is aptly named.

I like reading Will's point of view not so much of Ashton. For some reason I feel like my blood pressure's getting high every time I've read her thoughts. I know that her becoming a vampire is hard for her to accept but I wished that she would do something about and not think of doing mundane things. Plus, there's the situation with Will and wherein Will falls in love with her and she's reluctant to reciprocate her feelings. What I hate most about Unrequited is that there's another vampire who's fighting for her affections and her situation with Will is not even concluded yet. And then towards the ending she has to pick either one of them which is still a mystery to me as well. The ending of Unrequited is a cliffhanger. I wished that there was a warning that the ending is a cliffhanger and I didn't even know it was part of a series since there's no mention of it. But I will want to read the next book but if only to find out whom she ends up with.

Gah....

I can't believe what I just read. How can this be published? Really? I know I have to be coherent with this review, but I am still in shock. There is no rhyme or reason to this story. We have Will a vampire teacher who is 200 years plus old, then Ashton a newbie vampire but a student. They had connection, Will was in love with her but she was on the fence about her feelings. She asked for time, five years passed. Then just before she graduated from college, she met another vampire, Griffin. So instead of coming back to tell Will she could love him, she came to tell him she met another person. There was a kind of love triangle, that became a foursome, then the end. Yep like a drop off the face of a cliff, she 'opened her eyes' to the two men who love her. The end.

First of all the characters were two dimensioned, no depth to them. Yes they were described as' pretty', that's it. The plot was linear and weak, (sorry lost for words there). The writing was juvenile and read like the diary of a 5th grader. There is no depth at all, and this story was just bland. Having read so many books in this genre, this is not up to par at all. Sorry.

I am a HUGE vampire book fan. I grew up reading The Vampire Diaries by L.J Smith and The Last Vampire by Christopher Pike. In my mind that's the Vampire World I am used to. Vampires drink blood, they have supernatural powers and an aversion to the sun.

Unrequited is a new spin on vampires. They no longer need blood to survive and have no real issues in the sun. And until Will meets Ashton he believes he is the only vampire and is destined to live forever ALONE.

Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars. Unrequited had a slow start, and it almost felt like 3 books in one. I enjoyed that most of the vampires were good, not out drinking blood and murdering innocent people. The book leaves us with a cliffhanger (almost quite literally) but Emily is working on a sequel.

This may have been another vampire-love-triangle story with a few twists, but it was still an interesting one. The characters were all intriguing and 3-dimensional, and the plot had several fun twists. Would I read more by this author? Maybe, but probably not. Would I recommend this to others? Sure.

I don't know what went wrong. Though in general, it has an interesting plot, somewhere along the story it became anticlimactic. And moreover, the author's concept of vampires are just too 'humanly'. But I really admire creative writing and how authors act on ideas so, overall its still a good book.

This was a fairly good read. Engrossing and entertaining. Light and not painstakingly heart crushing. Some parts may have been rushed. A LOT. But, I have to ask- WHO THE BLOODY HELL DID SHE FINALLY CHOOSE???!!!
