Handsome, ruthless, young U.S. Marshal Jamie MacLaren had lost everything-his parents, his family connections, and his childhood sweetheart-but now he's back in Fire Mountain and ready for another chance. Just as he successfully reconnects with his family and starts to rebuild his life, he gets the unexpected and unwanted assignment of rescuing the woman who broke his heart. Beautiful, wealthy Victoria Wicklin chose money and power over love, but is now fighting for her life-or is she? Who has she become in the seven years since she left Fire Mountain to take up her life in San Francisco? Is she really as innocent as she says? Marshal MacLaren struggles to learn the truth and do his job, but the past and present lead him in different directions as his heart and brain wage battle. Is Victoria a victim or a villain? This book was a big disappointment, especially considering how much better the first book of the series, Tougher Than the Rest is. Faster Than the Rest belabors the "big misunderstanding" trope, piling one misunderstanding upon another, when five minutes of honest communication between the hero and heroine would've solved all the problems. That made it a real struggle for me to finish reading the story. I did finish it, but I'm not recommending.

A likable Hero still in love with the heroine, his former fiancee. Seven years ago Jamie proposed to Victoria. She agrees to marry him yet two weeks later hastily marries the nephew of her parent's close friend.

Jamie is confused and devastated and leaves his brothers and the family ranch. He spends a few years as a hired gun and tries to forget Victoria by sleeping with other women. In the meantime Victoria is abused by her gambling husband. Jamie becomes a US Marshal and is commissioned to rescue Victoria who is held for ransom by bandits.

I really liked Jamie. He was a stand up guy. Victoria was a broken and depressed woman. We see both their pov and see the chemistry between them. Unfortunately they do not communicate for the majority of the story. There is a whole lot of misunderstandings and the h refusing to talk to the H. The author fails to show a connection between the two until the very end. The one sex scene is closed door.

There are two more brothers and two more books in this series. I'm not sure if I will finish reading the series.

2. Faster than the Rest, Book Two
4 Stars
I purchased a copy of the historical 1800’s Arizona set western romance Faster Than The Rest (MacLarens of Fire Mountain Book 2): Jamie by Shirleen Davies and this review was given freely.
A suspenseful story of corruption, abuse and second chances combined with multiple romances.
Twenty-five-year-old handsome, tenacious, and love disillusioned US Marshall and locator of kidnapped victims, Jamie MacLaren follows the trail of kidnapper and bank robbing Miguel Hagan which leads him to San Diego and his ex-fiancé. who abandoned him seven years ago, the now wealthy San Franciscan, Victoria Wicklin who caught in the violence caused by her abusive gambler husband.
Contains a fair amount of violence but ends happily.
3. Harder than the Rest, Book Three
4 stars
I purchased a copy of the historical 1800’s set western romance Harder Than The Rest (MacLarens of Fire Mountain Book 3): Will by Shirleen Davies and this review was given freely.
Irony, fate, suspense, and tragedy.
Contains glimpses of life at the MacLaren ranch in Arizona, the story of Will’s seeking revenge for the murder of his wife and unborn child, a revenge filled scheme including cattle rustling, and a dangerous love triangle.
Five years after the tragic death of his pregnant wife Emily, the devastated and hardened Will MacLarens tracks her murder to Colorado near the ranch of Amanda Taylor whose ranch is being plagued by rustlers. Drew and Jamie arrive to help only for tragedy to fall.
Contains a fair amount of violence, multiple romances with some happy endings.
4. Stronger than the Rest, Book Four
3 stars
I purchased a copy of the historical 1800’s set western romance Stronger Than The Rest (MacLarens of Fire Mountain Book 4): Drew by Shirleen Davies and this review was given freely.
Pride, reduced self-image, greed, determination, and a whole lot of violence is contained in this book where each chapter goes back and forth between Cold Creek and Denver, Colorado with a few excerpts from Fire Mountain Arizona. The delivery is awkward at times using ‘the associate, ‘the brother, and ‘Connor interchangeably during the same scene making it difficult to figure out who was being referred to.
If you didn’t catch on with the descriptions and foreshadowing, the family expands with three more adult MacLarens as well as some Arizona children.
Bitter, paralyzed, and determined to both walk again and make Tess his wife, attorney Drew Maclaren forsakes the comfort of his Arizona family, and his dreams of horse breeding to return to Cold Creek, Colorado to further the interests of his Denver boss, Mr. Dunnigan only to find the neighboring ranches under attack.
Contains a lot of violence and many murders.
5. Deadlier than the Rest, Book Five
4 stars
I purchased a copy of the historical 1800’s set western romance Deadlier Than The Rest (MacLarens of Fire Mountain Book 5): Connor by Shirleen Davies and this review was given freely.
A then and now story relating the tragedies experienced by Meggie beginning with her kidnapping at sixteen in Brooklyn, NY and ending with her abusive marriage as fourth wife to a Mormon in Salt Lake City, Utah is combined with her brother Connor’s search for her, Conner’s falling for Mormon runaway third wife Grace, and a story of ex-convicts seeking revenge.
Contains a fair amount of violence, multiple ironic moments, two weddings and two momentous reunions.
6. Wilder than the Rest, Book Six
4 stars
I purchased a copy of the historical 1800’s set western romance Wilder Than The Rest (MacLarens of Fire Mountain Book 6): Pierce by Shirleen Davies and this review was given freely.
A bit slow with some suspense.
A good update and integration of all the MacLaren clan is combined with an instant love-hate romance, a second chance at love romance, a reunion with three more MacLaren cousins, and an undercover Secret Service mission to stop an assassination.
Tricked into being partnered as a married couple, new Secret Service undercover operative Pierce MacLaren and Agent Mollie Jamison fight their attraction to and frustration with each other while trying to solve a governmental case where the city of San Francisco’s High Society and banking are the only clues.

Great novel

This is the second book in the MacLaren series I've read and it was as good as the first one. The author is very adept at portraying her characters in such a descriptive manner that you can easily visualize them in your mind. This was a love story filled with adventure.

In this second book about the MacLaren Family, the story focuses on Jamie MacLaren, U.S. Marshall and the woman he was engaged to 8 years ago - Victoria. Right after their engagement, he left to go on a cattle drive and while he was gone, she married another man. Jamie has stewed in anger for 8 long years wondering why the love of his life left him for another man. She has lived in San Francisco during these 8 years and he has never seen her even once.

*Minor Spoilers*

When Jamie receives word that Victoria has been kidnapped for ransom, in his role as U.S. Marshall, he searches until he finds her so he can return her to safety. Once he completes his mission, he will barely speak to her on the trip home. Unbeknownst to Jamie, she has had a very difficult life during the past 8 years but she's not going to bare her soul to the man who acts as though he detests her. Along the way home, it seems Ms. Davies must include a couple of encounters between Jamie and his whore of choice at the local saloon while he leaves Victoria in the hotel lonely and hurting. This part I hate.

Once Jamie gets Victoria to her parents' home, days and weeks go by before they have a semi-friendly encounter. Then, more days and weeks go by before the ice begins to break. There is very little romance in this book. The book is 75% complete before Jamie and Victoria actually have any breakthrough in their relationship. In fact, they are barely speaking to one another.

I enjoy romance novels and the build-up toward the characters HEA. In this and in the first book in this series - Tougher than the Rest - there is quite a bit of strife and very little romance until the end of the book(s). Both books in this series are rather short - more novellas than novels.

I do find the MacLaren Family to be a very interesting family. Also, minor characters such as Gloria and Sam and their relationship brings an added flavor to the series. I love the fact that someone like Gloria, former saloon owner and prostitute who has a heart of gold, has the potential to marry a good man like Sam and have friends and people who accept her in spite of her past. This is quite rare in books written about this time period.

Shirleen Davies is an excellent writer and I look forward to Will's and Drew's stories. I wish the books were a little longer but only if more pages could be be given over to romance between the H/h and I'm not talking about a lot of sexual details - just plain old kindness, a dance or two, some comfort, loving conversation, hugging, kissing, sitting in lap stuff - that's what I'm talkin' about!

After his fiance leaves town to marry another man, Jamie MacLaren abandons his family's ranch and sets off to start a new life. As a U.S. Marshal, he has a fairly rootless existence. He's never shown any inclination to find a new girl to settle down with, nor to return to his home in Arizona. Jamie is known for his ability to recover kidnap victims; he never imagined he'd be charged with the recovery of the fiance who left him so many years ago. Victoria chose a wealthy husband--or did she? Things aren't always what they seem and Jamie must uncover all Victoria's secrets in order to truly save her.

After a whirlwind romantic relationship between me and the first book in the series (Tougher than the Rest), I immediately began reading this second MacLarens of Fire Mountain book. I was not disappointed and fell even deeper in love with this historical, fictional world Shirleen Davies created. This book has two love stories in one! Yes, that's right. The story primarily focuses on Jamie and Victoria, but there's an amazing subplot that focuses on another would-be couple.

Faster than the Rest re-introduces all our favorite characters from the first book, characters who, by now, are like family to me. It explores forgiveness, trust, heartbreak, betrayal, tolerance, and above all--love. I appreciate the fact that the characters in this series are well-rounded and undergo growth during the course of the book. Each character has challenges (internal or external) they must overcome before they're able to fully commit to a romantic relationship. And, it isn't only romantic relationships that are explored in this series--we also delve into friendships, family relationships, and parental bonds.

I was so happy to find that the second book in this series had come out. I absolutely loved the first one and stayed up way past my bedtime reading it. And now I have done that again. It is 3:30 in the morning here and I'm afraid it will be a while before I will be able to close my eyes. I just finished this wonderful sequel, and my mind is racing!

After finishing the Tougher Than The Rest, I was so in love with the main characters that I wasn't sure I would be able to adjust to new ones. But, I did very easily. Jamie MacLaren is just as interesting as his brother Niall was, and Victoria is even more so than Kate was. Oh, and they are in this one too, just not as much.

There is a big secret in this one that you will never guess. I had so many ideas as to what it was that I came up with as the story progressed, but they were all wrong. I was shocked! And then, there was another revelation in the middle, that had me going back to the beginning to re-read the first chapter to make sure I had my facts straight. At first, I thought that the first chapter seemed out of place, but it later made perfect sense. So, don't be put off by the randomness of it at first. I promise you will come back to it.

Anyway, I need to try to sleep now, and I could ramble on all night about how great this book was. So get it yourself and I promise you will agree!

Faster than the Rest is the second book in the MacLarens of Fire Mountain series. Its is a wonderful historical romance. We first meet Jamie MacLaren while he is searching for a kidnap victim. But, this is no ordinary kidnap victim. This is his ex-fiancee, Victoria, that left him for another man seven years prior. Once Jamie rescues Victoria he tries desperately to forget all the feelings she still created inside him. Along with the love that he still carried for her there was anger and hurt from her choice so long ago. Victoria faces the same but she is elated to see Jamie again and hopes to possibly reconcile what was once lost. The biggest question is can Jamie forgive and forget Victoria’s choices and can Victoria move past her pains from her past to move onto to a future with Jamie?

I love a good cowboy romance. This is definitely a great one. I loved Jamie and Victoria’s story along with the side story of Sam and Gloria. I thought the story was full of suspense at times and really helped to propel the characters is wonderful and entertaining ways. The story and the characters were well-defined making it a wonderful read. I can’t wait for Shirleen’s next book. I definitely want a cowboy of my own after this story. WhooWee!

Happening a year after 'Tougher Than the Rest', we follow Jamie and his conflicts of the heart when he rescues an old flame who left him once for a man with money. Things quickly get more complicated than that and soon nothing is as it seems, or safe.

As one of the four brothers of the 'MacLarens of Fire Mountain' series, Jamie gains a great deal of discipline in becoming a U.S. Marshal after becoming troubled for a while after his heart is broken. When the law comes after Victoria, this creates a lot of conflict. He was a great character to see on his own, and is now my favourite of the brothers. Victoria was a really strong heroine as well, likely from her past experiences that are nothing short of cruel and cold. Despite being the lady in distress, she keeps her head high and her focus on dealing with and moving past her troubles.

'Faster Than the Rest' is a great western romance read for those who enjoy realistic and complex characters, whether you're continuing from the previous book or reading it as a standalone.

I got hooked on this author after reading "Tougher Than The Rest". I was anxious to be able to get some free time to start on this book because I was very impressed with the other. I must admit, at first I was a bit wary because some authors that I have came across seem to 'lose steam' and fail to make books as good as the previous ones; thankfully, this definitely isn't the case at all with Shirleen Davis. Faster Than The Rest retains all the great qualities that I loved about Shirleen's other book plus with some great twists and turns added that added an element of freshness to the story that kept me just as captivated as the last.

The writing is flawless, with a smooth tone that expresses character's clever dialogue and interactions with each other and vividly describes the world and the environment that they reside in. Yet again, the author has gone above and beyond my expectations and left me wanting more and more. I highly recommend starting with 'Tougher Than The Rest' and then moving on to this, you won't be disappointed.

I’ve fallen in love with another MacLaren brother. This time it’s Jamie—the man whose broken heart drove him away from his family’s ranch to take a job as a U.S. Marshall. Even seven years after his fiance’s cancellation of their wedding plans, he hasn’t recovered. But now Jamie has been assigned to rescue a woman who’s been kidnapped by notorious outlaw Miguel Hagan. And that woman is Victoria.

Author Shirleen Davies does a great job of showing Jamie’s torment. He’s a tough guy known for his fast draw, and he’s devoted to his brothers. He’s the kind of person you’d want for a friend. Victoria made a mistake when she was young and naïve—a mistake that made her cancel her wedding plans with Jamie. Now Jamie believes she married another man because of his wealth, and Victoria is afraid to reveal the real reason behind her decision. With twists and turns, the author takes us through both their stories to a satisfying conclusion.

I’m looking forward to future books in the MacLaren series, and I’m wondering which MacLaren I’ll fall in love with next!

I am actually in the process of re-reading this book, that's how much I like it! Shirleen Davies is definitely my new favorite author and after reading the first book in her Fire Mountain series, I knew I had to read this one. Her story has the perfect combination of romance and adventure with a good amount of suspense thrown in. Her character development is so good that I often found myself thinking about the characters and what was going to happen to them next even when I wasn't reading the book! I have never felt that connected with any character in any book ever. I found the story to be very well written and the back story makes you not want to miss a single page. I rarely put the book down and when I did it was basically under duress. I was expecting a lot after reading the author's first book and got more than expected with this offering. If her next book is even half as good as Faster Than the Rest, it is sure to be a hit!

I loved this sequel to 'Tougher Than The Rest,' and it's great to pick up a book and feel like you already know the characters as old friends. In 'Faster Than The Rest,' we meet Jamie and Victoria, the latter of which is being held hostage by gun point. Victoria manages to escape and runs right into the arms of her lost love, Jamie, but at first they can barely tolerate each other, due to their rather shaky past in which Victoria had jilted him, several years before. The antagonism between the two makes for a lot of delicious tension and I honestly couldn't the book down from start to finish!

Faster Than The Rest delivers a nail-biting ride, as the protagonist is incarcerated due to the lies of her husband, and is still being hunted down by the Mexican bandit who kidnapped her. Can Jamie and Victoria get beyond the lies, deceit and machinations of others in order to resurrect their lost love? Only time will tell...

Another 5 Star read from Shirleen Davies!

This book is the sequel to Tougher than the Rest, to which we were introduced to Niall MacLaren and his three brothers Jamie, Drew and Will. This second book focuses more on Jamie, who had left the ranch to become a successful U.S. Marshall, and the love of his life, Victoria - who had previously broken his heart. We see his struggles in life, from the past to the present - but we also see Victoria's struggles which were unbeknownst to Jamie. And of course, the other characters from the last book also have their moments on this one. I love how relatable the characters are; whether it be because of their experiences or their personal feelings. This novel contains action, adventure and romance complete with interesting characters and plot twists. It makes the readers wonder, what's coming up next from Fire Mountain?

Fabulous series is fabulous. After being wowed by both the first book and now this second one, I definitely view Shirleen Davies as a first class writer all the way. I greatly appreciate her world building, how she delves into the psyches and motivations of her characters with a very skilled hand. More than that, her protagonists are likeable, people I grew to care about, people I wanted the best for by the end of the book. Which she, of course, delivers in spades. “Faster Than the Rest was a captivating, fascinating adventure from the first page to the last a worthy second book to follow a fantastic first in what is forming to be a fabulous series. Good book, good buy, I highly recommend!
