Chasing the Shadows

Rate this book
Nikki James is in San Francisco at the request of her partner and best friend, Jake. The wife of an old friend is missing, and Jake intends to find her—whatever the cost. The authorities believe the kidnappings to be the work of a sick mind, but Nikki knows that the truth is something much worse—especially since she seems to have an unexpected psychic link to the killer. But as always, she is more than willing to risk her own life to save another’s.

For Michael Kelly, Nikki’s bravado is a source of endless terror. He wants nothing more than to make Nikki a permanent part of his life, but he knows that her quest is sure to get her killed. As they chase through the sewers and tunnels of San Francisco and the body count begins to rise, Michael badgers her to stay off the case, but Nikki has no intention of complying. She wants him to realize that she’s either a full partner in his life or she’s out. But nothing prepares her for the price she has to pay for her stubbornness—the life of someone she loves.

CHASING THE SHADOWS is book 3 in the Nikki and Michael series. While I do believe you can happily read this book as a standalone, I would still definitely recommend reading the books in order just because you’ll get the full range of emotions in terms of the romance between our main characters. The story and the mystery itself can work alone, but if you are a Keri Arthur fan, I would suggest starting with book one.

In this book we get a deeper insight into Nikki and Michael’s relationship. They are a couple now but that doesn’t mean things are all swell between them. Both of them are fiercely independent people so part of the struggle with them is to find a balance. Mentioned in the book is the “give and take of a relationship and that aptly describes what both of them need to do in order to make this relationship work. In this, this book reminds me a little of Cat and Bones of the Night Huntress series who have their own personal relationship problems within the series. I think having those struggles make Nikki and Michael a stronger couple and also, it makes them feel so much more real, as they undergo changes in their lives that find that happiness.

The case they are working on this time is probably my favorite in the series so far. Four wealthy women have been kidnapped by vampires. They have been mutilated and killed, even when the ransom money was paid. All this becomes clearer as the past of these women come into play. This mystery hooked into me skin and just dragged me through the whole story until I finished. I read this whole book in one afternoon and found myself riveted by the pulse-pounding action as well as the developing romance.

One other thing I absolutely loved about this series is Seline. Seline is a witch and we’ve seen her presence throughout the series, but I don’t think I’ve mentioned her before now. She has these mental conversations with Michael all the time and I always find myself looking forward to her scenes because she has known Michael the longest and I feel as if we get better insight into his character through her. She is also a compelling and interesting character herself so I like it whenever Michael calls her.

I loved this book! If you’re looking for a series that similar in style to Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series with its writing and heroes, then you’ll love this. I would also recommend this book to fans of the In Death series by J.D. Robb because the mysteries are very well done and they have a paranormal twist to them usually.

Nikki and Michael are back in book three of Keri Arthur’s Nikki and Michael series. Nikki, a telepath and telekinetic, has had enough of playing house and waiting for Michael’s return from a mission. Things have been going well for the duo, but their relationship is still strained by Michael’s old-world ways sometimes. It’s nice to have a little tension in the relationship as it grows, but sometimes I felt it was overdone. The story this time takes us to San Francisco, and back to Jake, Nikki’s partner in crime-fighting from her days at the private investigation company. I was glad of the change of scenery as the first two books in the series both featured plenty of time spent in caves, and we often get numerous repetitions about what happened to Nikki in a cave in the first book (won’t say what happened as it might spoil things for people). However, we did end up spending plenty of time underground again, this time in the sewers, but I could deal with that as it’s still a change from caves and vampires have got to hide somewhere during the day.

Michael returns from his mission with a yearning to see Nikki at his remote cabin and a present in his pocket that isn’t something sensual. A certain token for his love. The trouble is, she’s headed out to the same mission he’s just been assigned to, and now he’s chasing her across the country rather than enjoying a nice lazy reunion full of lovemaking. When he eventually catches up with his wayward love, she’s neck deep in trouble again. Together they go through various highs and lows with plenty of suspense tossed in to keep me flipping pages, and the odd scuffle between the lovers to keep things interesting, although sometimes it goes too far. Nikki becomes a little irritating in this one as she clearly doesn't know when she's on to a good thing and seems fairly determined to force Michael out of her life or get him killed. She came off as a bit petulant and childish in places. Nikki's powers are growing in this one, and it seems they're affecting Michael too, which makes it quite interesting, but they didn't grow enough to be particularly exciting. Nikki has also picked up some pyrokinetic abilities from book two as well.

I really enjoyed this story, but it started to feel a bit repetitive having read the first two. The author has stock phrases that she uses around twenty times per book each and it did start to grate on my nerves a little. The editing in this book sucked too. Lots of mistakes that really leapt out at me, and some times when the writing was really below par. I wanted this book to be as great as the first two, but it fell short due to the editing and repetition, and playing on Michael being over-protective, and also had a fairly predictable sad moment that didn’t actually gain much emotional reaction from me because I didn’t feel the person who died was emotionally involved or close enough to Nikki to actually warrant such a strong reaction from her. There was nothing in this book or the previous ones that made out they were very close. I still enjoyed Michael and it’s nice seeing him battling his darkness to keep control around Nikki, although sometimes I wished he’d let a little of that darkness out to play. I do enjoy a good biting scene. It might have bumped this one up to a four in spite of the bad editing and repetition. If you’ve read the previous two, then do continue, but be warned that there are some nasty editing errors ahead.

Chasing the Shadows by Keri Arthur is filled with all the ingredients for a good paranormal romance, like murder, mystery, love with that electric spark between Nikki and Michael that ignites passion, intense feelings and some fierce disagreements. Michael is very protective and Nikki is strong-willed and needs to feel she is an equal partner in their relationship. The problem is, as Nikki’s special powers grow, she has to struggle to keep them under control. Heading off to help Jake with a vampire-related missing person’s case is probably not her brightest move. Just ask Michael. Will his old world ways cramp Nikki’s progressive style or will they find a happy medium, and what about Jake’s missing person’s case?

Keri Arthur can create a tale, flesh it out, pack some action in, and by adding colorful characters with great dialogue, puts the reader in the middle of her world. Ever watch two people argue, butt heads and want to put them both in their own corners for a time out? That’s how I felt with Michael and Nikki! There were times when they seemed a little over-the-top, but love can do that to people, right? Compromise, anyone?

I've been merrily going through my old books trying to escape reality and decided to read this series again. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed these stories and its easy to not only follow the nail biting plot but also believe in the romance. I'd definitely recommend this series although I believe there is now an edition available that includes all of the stories so clearly more economical. I very much enjoyed revisiting these characters and this author has always been a major talent.

I actually enjoyed this book..
Typically I don't like books that have too much sexual content but tbh.. It fits.. Just that their minds are so blended and they feel each other the same as they feel their own emotions..
I love Michael anyway and towards the end I really liked Nikki.. Thought she was a bit of a brat at the beginning but she warmed up to me.

Good story and great characters.

This is book 3 in the Nikki and Michael series & I'd strongly recommend that you read the series in order. Although I won't give spoilers for Chasing the Shadows in this review it will be impossible not to include things that may spoil the previous books so if you're new to the series I'd recommend you read the reviews for Dancing with the Devil. This is a series I'm thoroughly enjoying so I'd definitely recommend you check it out!

Nikki & Michael have now been a couple for several months but although they are very happy together Michael's work with the Circle has meant he is spending a lot of time away from their home. Nikki isn't happy that he leaves her behind & wants to be able to work with him. She knows her talents have been useful in the past and believes she can help him. Michael on the other hand is determined not to let her put herself in danger - he wants to protect her and the best way to do that is to keep her away from Circle business. This is causing a lot of conflict between them so Michael isn't happy when he comes home from a case to find that Nikki is in San Francisco working on a case with Jake.

Women are being kidnapped and although the ransoms are being paid their mutilated bodies have started turning up. The latest kidnapping victim is Jake's best friend's wife and they need to work fast if they are going to find her before she is murdered. But it isn't just a normal killer they are dealing with and Michael has also been asked to investigate by the Circle.

This was a fantastic installment to a great series & I can't wait to read the next book. I love Nikki & Michael and am really enjoying watching their relationship develop. The romance is really well done but it is only part of the story and there was plenty of action that kept me on the edge of my seat. Nikki's psychic abilities are changing since Michael made her into a Thrall and I'm really curious about what is going to happen to them in the future. Keri Arthur has definitely earned a place on my favorite authors list & I'm looking forward to reading more of her books. I'd recommend this series to any urban fantasy fans - especially if you like a little romance thrown in for good measure

Delve deeper into the mind of Michael

This is the third book in the Nikki and Michael series by Keri Arthur. This book starts off four months later, where Nikki and Michael are living together. Michael is off on an assignment and is returning home . He gets information that he’s needed on another case in San Francisco. He says that he’ll do it but first he wants to get home to Nikki, though she’s not there, she’s already in San Francisco.

Nikki’s friend and boss Jake called Nikki to come to help him with a case. His friends wife is missing and they need to find her. Since Nikki has the psychic ability to find people she agrees. She also leaves because she’s bored at home. She wants to be a team with Michael, going with him on assignment, though he disagrees because he thinks it’ll be to much of a danger, though Nikki’s life is always in danger and she doesn’t seem to see it his way. Though danger comes in a form of a vampire the moment she get’s into her room.

When Michael arrives he’s furious. He can’t believe that she just left without thinking of the consequences. Her abilities are growing at an alarming rate and he’s worried that someone might be able to tap into her mind or she’ll get lost in someone else’s. Though since he’s there he just lets her search for the missing woman (knowing he’ll never stop her) and helps her along the way. Nikki finds that the woman has been taken by a vampire whose soul purpose is to ruin this woman life. Not only this one but many more, like her bosses wife,Mary, who went to school with the man who is now a vampire. Through Nikki’s stubbornness she loses someone close to her and it takes all she’s got to get rid of the man who did it.

This book was a good one. There was more drama in this one and Nikki really has to grow up. She learns that if she doesn’t she’ll lose everything. Plus Michael is becoming more of a positive, he’s learning to deal with Nikki in a whole new manner and it’s not so frustrating between those two. I like this series, like most of Keri Arthur’s books, though this one is more of a romance then the other series she wrote. Very good plot line and goes great into the fourth one!!

Chasing the Shadows is a heart pounding, non-stop, emotionally enthralling story. From page one, Keri Arthur hooked us with her memorizing characters and the dark magical world brought to life from Arthur's imagination. Bringing us a story that really hits home with our characters, new revelations and a battle for compromise, I found Chasing the Shadows my favorite Nikki & Michael story so far.

This ARC copy of Chasing the Shadows was given to me by Random House Publishing Group - Dell in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication on September 24, 2013.

I really like this series and Keri Arthur knows how to keep you engaged throughout her books and there’s never anything that makes me lose interest or bores me

…BUT Nikki and Michael’s back and forward drives me insane. As soon as one of them is on board with their relationship the other ones starts doubting it. The most obvious solution in the world would be to start TALKING instead of screaming and butting heads.

I really get their points of view but the way they go about stating their opinion makes me want to scream and it distracts me from the great plot. The Plot like the in the two previous books was solid and kept me right on the edge of my seat, hoping and guessing.

The character growth throughout the book is very noticeable and while their relationship problems don’t magically disappear, I was glad to see that they finally found a way to start in the right direction towards the end; I can only hope that it will continue into that direction in book 4.

The end, wow. There are many authors that would’ve changed direction in the last possible moment and in an incredible gesture of strength would’ve saved the day. I like Keri Arthur’s approach much better, she didn’t choose the easier road but took us on a great journey instead.

So what’s left to say? I can’t wait for book 4!

This is my favorite book in the series!

Arthur's world building is again fantastic. I love the world she created. Each book in the series add on to it. There are all kinds of different beings and elements added in this one as well.

The plot is rather predictable but very entertaining. This is a page turner! Lots of action, fantasy and the love story of Nikki and Michael make for a fun read.

But my favorite part is the character building. And in fact this is the best in the entire series. Yes, I know ,I know- there I am again; Throw everything overboard if the character building is great. Well, as long as I like the writing style- which I clearly do having read the entire series back to back.
While we got to know most of the characters in the previous books- in this one they are more carved out, Keri dug deeper this time. And for me the best part is the dynamic between them. They feel like a group of friends you get to revisit.
The only bit that was disappointing; The villains were seriously mediocre. Predictable and to cliche, made them very caricaturistic than charismatic or believable.

A book that adds on so much to a already good series.

Damn this installment really made me nervous...Nikki and Michael are sooooo damn stubborn. Just the right about of action and passion. Nikki is really evolving but in to what who knows, not even Seline can get a handle all the changes that she's experiencing. Michael is not afraid to put his heart out there but he's scared to death of losing Nikki and he fights tooth and fang to keep her out of trouble but trouble just a knack of finding her and she's to hard headed to back away. She heads right in to the fray.
I love this book and I hate knowing that I'm starting the last book in the series, it makes me sad actually. But not sad enough to not read it, if you know what I mean.
Do yourself a favor and get your hands on this series, I highly recommend it.

Heather's Notes
I had a hard time getting into this book. Michael and Nikki's inability to communicate and compromise was annoying. Also it was never explained how the "villain" got his powers. Since the next book is the last, I will probably read it, but I am not looking forward to it.

Another great read in the Nikki & Michael series from Keri Arthur. This exciting tale takes us to San Francisco where woman are going missing and Nikki's new talents are needed to help track them down before they are killed. Nikki's talents are still too new and she does not have the best control over them but thankfully Michael is on hand to help. Except their relationship is still too new. Even though they are connected for life, trying to navigate romance is harder than either expected. And with a vengeful vampire on the loose they need to get past their problems and track him down fast before he kills something they both care about. Great suspense, pulls on your heartstrings as they try to navigate their happiness, and with curveballs you are expecting. Good read!

Ahh so good!
I'm so glad Arthur kept Nikki true to her character and beliefs and didn't turn her into a damsel that sat around waiting for her man. Nikki has never and will never be that.
I loved seeing more action with Jake and nearly cried at his misfortune.
The fighting between Nikki and Michael started getting a bit repetitive and was glad Arthur finally resolved it so we don't need to read about it anymore.
I like the new addition of ghosts and getting more understanding of the actual connection between Nikki and Michael.
And that ending. *swoon*

Great series! Loved this one best.

Another good story. If you haven't read the other two books do before this one. I love the story of these two and the back and forth between them. The one part near the end was sad but I knew it would happen to someone. I love how she is getting more powerful. I can see a lot more books about these three!

BOOK SYNOPSIS

A QUESTION OF LUST

Includes an excerpt of the next novel in Keri Arthur’s Nikki and Michael series, Kiss the Night Goodbye

From the Paperback edition.

My Thoughts

From the beginning of the series Nikki and Michael have been portrayed as solitary independent individuals and that being ingrained for a lifetime it has been hard for the two to form a relationship. Now that they have both decided that they wish to try and make it work as a couple however the overprotective domineering alpha male characteristics that make Michael such a caring lover also make it hard for Nikki to communicate just how much it hurts her to always be left out of the less savory aspects of his life. Her displeasure finally translates into an ultimatum at one point and at the worst possible time causing the two of them to finally reassess the need for a complete compromise if they are ever to stay together.

For me this was the game changer, the truth is that in each book the relationship between Nikki and Michael has always taken presecdence over the investigative case that the two happen to be working on. It is very understandable that Michael's character is centuries old and was raised in a time where women stayed at home cosseted and protected by their men, content to raise the children and oversee the household leaving the reins of making a livelihood to those same men.

Nikki James however is a very modern female whose life has not been wine and roses but rather having to learn at a very early age to fend for herself and make her own way. Her friend and fellow investigative partner Jake is almost a father figure and when he asks for her help she feels that no matter what Michael thinks if she can render aid than that is what she needs to do.

Of course rendering aid means much more than just showing up and doing footwork to locate a missing person, in Nikki's case it means opening herself up through her psychic ability to whatever dangerous entity is killing the kidnap victims. Thus begins another round of cat and mouse that Nikki is more than willing to participate in and which causes all kinds of grief before it is over, not only for her and Michael but also for the women's spouses including Jake.

This is my least favorite story line as the series is coming to a conclusion with Kiss the Night Goodbye and yet at the same time the turning point that gives Nikki and Michael a much needed incentive to learn how to compromise in their ongoing battle of wills.

As I prepare to read the last book am sorry to see the series end but eager to see whether the pair create the future together that they both long for!
