A desire of a homeschooling mother's heart is to have a meek and quiet spirit instead of discouragement, fear, and anger. She can cope with the myriad of daily difficulties and decisions that a homeschooling lifestyle brings with it, as long as she is having the right responses to them. Let her be fearful, worried, anxious, frustrated, irritated, or angry and a mom soon realizes she is undermining all she wants to accomplish by homeschooling. Because Teri Maxwell, a mother of eight, has walked the homeschooling path since 1985, she knows first-hand the struggle for a meek and quiet spirit. The memories from her early homeschooling years of often being worried and angry rather than having a meek and quiet spirit are not what she would like them to be.
Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit includes Teri sharing the work the Lord has done in her heart through homeschooling. Other homeschooling moms will be encouraged that He can do the same for them. Teri also desires that homeschooling mothers could learn from the lessons the Lord has taught her so that they would begin to have a meek and quiet spirit long before she did.
Will the reader's journey toward a meek and quiet spirit be completed upon finding the perfect spelling curriculum or deciding which chores a child should be doing? Or does the answer lie on a different path? In these pages, Teri offers practical insights into gaining a meek and quiet spirit, along with chapter-by-chapter projects, that any mom can apply to her individual circumstances. She transparently shares the struggles God has brought her through and what He has shown her during these many homeschooling years.
Throughout Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit, the heart issues that will gently lead you to a meek and quiet spirit are discovered. The reader is encouraged to join Teri as they seek the Lord to homeschool with a meek and quiet spirit! .
The last two chapters were the most helpful for me but it was overall a good book with some helpful application. I’m so glad I read this before school starts this fall. It has helped me see some areas of weakness and helped me know more how I should be praying for this next chapter in my life. It also helped me see some ways I can prepare my heart to be subjected to God and the work of the Holy Spirit rather than my own ideas and agendas.
This was better than expected (but maybe I was just judging the dates and cheesy cover and title). Practical and to the point reminders based on solid theology. If someone was new to homeschooling or Christianity, a lot of things would need more fleshing out.
I enjoyed this book. I liked the transparency with regards to struggles and I liked the scripture references. There are some good organizational tips and strong reminders to be in the Word.
This book was a gentle reminder to put your spiritual needs first. Without the Lord's help it's much harder to be patient and efficient and so on and so forth. It's something I forget quite often.
I appreciated the author's tone of "I have this problem too" - she seemed like a friend and mentor instead of a perfect lecturer pointing out all my failures.
She has some great ideas for organizing your time and day and for taking care of yourself so you can be a better mom and homeschooler.
This is a book that I think most of us need to read. Probably more than once. I also think the advice applies to most women, whether they homeschool or not.
To be fair, it was hard to rate this book as I don't home educate little ones and some of the book seemed to be more aimed towards those with younger children. It also has some ridiculous views on the marriage relationship.
However, it was an easy read and a good reminder to not let the busyness/stresses, etc. of home education and being a parent overwhelm the still small voice of God. I enjoyed it but the dodgy stuff outweighs the good.
This book left me very encouraged in the way I approach homeschooling and home duties. Reminding me to aways have a grateful heart. Teri shares many helpful ways to reach the goal of a meek and quiet spirit.
Not exactly the strongest writing or theology. However, the essence of the message is excellent. It applies far beyond homeschooling. I will be referencing it time and again!
This book had some very good advice and tips. However, I have a mind apart from my husband and his being male doesn’t make him more wise. I don’t agree with her views on the marriage relationship.
Since all non-homeschool moms think homeschool moms have a lot of patience, but all homeschool moms know for sure they don't... This is sweet and always needed encouragement for the homeschool mama.
This little book packs a punch! Mrs. Maxwell's testimony encouraged me, and her practical advice has helped me. I especially found amazing the meanings of the words meek (humble) and quiet (be still--as in "Be still and know that I am God"). This was profound to me, as I had been taught that meek and quiet equated a "mousy" type of woman. This book is quite the gem!
This book probably doesn't have anything in it that you hadn't thought of yourself, but it's nice to have all that information in place and on hand when you need a reminder! I would recommend it! It's pretty cheap, and has a cheap study guide that has been nice for me to play around with during my scripture study. As the title suggests, this book is written from a Christian mom's point of view. Take what you want, leave what you want, but all in all I enjoyed my time reading this book and keep it by the side of my bed to reread. At times it's like having a friend right next to you encouraging you on your way, and reminding you that God is very much invested in what happens at your home.
A beautiful book that really ministered to me where I am right now, even before "officially" homeschooling my kids. Somehow, knowing that other Christian moms struggle with the same things I struggle with makes me all the more determined to not let the Enemy have the victory in how I respond to frustrations in my home. I read the whole book in one sitting while nursing my napping baby and it has already penetrated my heart deeply with its Scriptural reminders. I highly recommend this to all moms trying to live more Christ-like.
This book took scripture from Gods word and spoke to my heart. I've learned ways I can begin to deal with my angry and frustrated heart, and begin to be the mom I want to be. If you struggle with anger, and frustration with your home life this book will help you see God's plan for your home. I think this should have been titled A Parents Guide To A Meek and Quiet Spirit.
I was inspired and challenged by this book and whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone who homeschools...but especially to those who are just starting out. Because really, nothing else matters (what curriculum you choose, how you schedule (or don't) your day, extra-curricular activities, etc.) if you don't do it with a Godly focus. I appreciated the author's humility and also her wise advice.
When I saw the title, I thought, "If this lady can stay at home with her 8 kids 24/7 and have a meek and quiet spirit, then she must know something I don't!" And I did, indeed, learn a lot. The author seems like an old friend. It's a very quick, easy read, but I found it very worthwhile. It's not just for homeschoolers, either! I think the title should be Mothering with a Meek and Quiet Spirit.
What great reminders and great encouragement! And many chapters are great for any mother, not just homeschoolers! The part that hit me over and over was about anger in training and discipline: "Anger creeps into these situations when I am more concerned about my inconveniences and difficulties than I am about my child's long-term character growth." (ouch.)
Title is a bit deceptive--this is really a great all around book with practical tips and spiritual encouragement. She does address having a meek and quiet spirit but the overarching help here is how to foster contentment, manage time, tackle organizational challenges, etc all in the midst of homeschooling. Practical and useful--and short!
This book obviously talks a lot about homeschooling, but I believe it's worth a read by anyone who is looking to overcome anger and depression and frustration and irritation. Is it a miracle pill? Nope. It's just like talking with a good friend who has been where I am and who sincerely wants to help me conquer it - not just get through it. I loved it.
I love this book. I am constantly rereading it. Every year that we homeschool I read it. It not only helps me in my endeavors with the children but also in other relationships. Having a meek and quiet spirit isn't limited to the homeschooling arena- it's an every day all day long challenge. :)
This book was so encouraging and loaded with scriptural truth on cultivating a meek and quiet spirit in homeschooling, homemaking, scheduling, organization, and child training. A fast and easy read and yet one I will reference and re-read a lot!
What a beautiful book! It's short and sweet. I felt like I was sitting with a dear friend, enjoying a conversation and a cup of tea. This book is about developing a meek and quiet spirit. The author's spirit comes through in the tone of the book. It's just a beautiful read.
A book that spoke directly to my heart as a dear and understanding friend. It's about homeschooling, but really it's about walking with the Lord and it's gems can be applied to any station or season of life. Highly recommended for any parent, whether homeschooling or not.
