Finally....A book to end the frustrations of book marketing! The book helped me realize there is a process AND a path. The process is likely similar for everyone BUT the ultimate marketing path for each book differs. The book outlines the process and provides honest insights on the individual path that is likely littered with rejection. The idea that sticks with me is the opportunities created by the book are often perceived as natural when in actuality success only comes after experiencing "event after event where nobody showed up until they finally found a formula that worked." Reading this book will help me find my marketing path, my formula and will do the same for you!
Julie Broad is genuinely a genius, because she has allowed new potential authors experience the thrill of publishing and getting their important messages out to their ideal readers. This new book is exactly what I need as I am writing my first book.
Her first book 'Self-Publish & Succeed' gave me the confidence and the skills to write my first draft, and it makes absolute sense that regardless of how brilliant my book might be, if nobody knows about it then it cannot sell.
This new book is written in an extremely reader friendly (easy to understand) language and genuinely there are so many practical tips for people to use in each chapter. I have written 13 practical tips in both chapters 1 & 2 alone. These are essentially straight forward advice how to do things e.g. make newsletter lists, leverage events, develop a reader/lead magnet.
The only problem I have Julie. Where am I going to get the time to do everything recommended?
Wait a minute, !
Buy this book even if only to get a birds eye view of what goes on inside the worlds of Amazon, social media platforms, influencers, pricing and printing strategies, book shop psychology etc. Its so interesting how the real world works and Julie writes authentically with the insights from a huge volume of her successful publications. Even providing the lists of those who successfully published and marketed their books will be useful for me to explore.
I was very familiar with Julie Broad, from both her YouTube channel Book Launchers and previous book "Self-Publish and Succeed". When I heard she was doing a book specifically focused on marketing, I was absolutely delighted... so delighted in fact that I read "Self-Promote and Succeed" in one sitting.
The book offers a wealth of useful information for authors and probes some truly revealing questions... Do I need to be a bestseller? What does success look like to me?
I liked the fact that marketing being a long game was acknowledged, and that what works for one person might not be at all applicable to every author's journey. This is especially important for nonfiction authors, who so often fall into the trap of applying marketing techniques which are tried and true favourites in fiction spaces - and super ineffective in nonfiction ones.
Having watched many of Julie's YouTube videos, I wasn't at all surprised that a great deal of focus was placed on using one's book as a means to brand building through courses, public speaking opportunities, etc. Depending on one's goals and (especially) nonfiction genre this may or may not be every author's greatest focus, but what I loved about the book was that it offered helpful suggestions for almost every marketing path imaginable.
One of my favourite messages in the book was, "Your book is not for everyone, and if you try to make it for everyone, it will be important to no one." Julie stressed the importance of writing (and marketing) for your ideal reader - which is something we all need to keep in the forefront of our minds with every marketing decision we make as authors.
I found the chapters on library marketing and ARC readers particularly enlightening. The tangible facts and figures in the chapter about bookstore marketing was great food for thought and set reasonable expectations about how 'worth it' pursuing that avenue was. My favourite chapter was the one about launch day - I loved the analogy of a book launch being like a birth. It was extremely validating to hear that an author who's had as much success as Julie has faced the same challenges that I have (as a very niche blogger turned author) and how she overcame them.
This book succeeds because there's nothing abstract about the advice it offers. Julie deals in facts and solutions and clearly wants to help set people up to succeed in the fabulous (but always challenging) world of self-publishing.
I received a free advance copy of this book and I am leaving an honest review.
When I first began my self-publishing journey, I found a number of fiction writers and publishers who helped educate me on the twisty-turny ins and outs of the self-publishing world. And while I am deeply grateful to them all, until I discovered Julie Broad and Book Launchers, I wasn't able to get the same level of self-publishing advice for the non-fiction books that I mostly write.
I find Book Launcher's #NoBoringBooks attitude to non-fiction both refreshing and inspiring and I continue to dip into "The Book Broad's" great font of knowledge frequently because it is informative and entertaining. So, it should come as no surprise that I was eager to learn from her newest book, Self-Promote and Succeed.
Self-Promote and Succeed is an excellent accompaniment to the lessons taught in Self-Publish and Succeed. It leads you through the process any author, whether indie or traditionally published, needs to do to work out how to effectively promote their book -- not only the nuts and bolts of book promotion, but also the reasons behind why you wrote your book and how this can help determine the way you market it.
I appreciate Broad's practical teaching style that you can find throughout Self-Promote and Succeed. It is supportive, encouraging and tough in ways that, if you heed it, will help you step up your book marketing game. This is a necessary resource for any author who has taken on the mantle of self-promoting their work.
The one thing I love more than any other while reading this book is the constant feeling I’m reading from someone who TRULY cares about the success of my book as much as I do. Very practical steps, encompassing the entire 360 challenge of book promotion, with refreshing insights and humor to help you get educated on this potentially terrifying prospect for all us normal, non-famous people. It ain’t easy, no one said it was. But it can be done. Even if you have to be inspired by Dr. Seuss, as Julie wrote. I believe it. That guy was a genius. One of my favorite parts was how she shared about developing a content calendar to help you keep pace with consistently releasing content on social media posts. I had never heard that before. I don’t have a YouTube channel either - yet! Thanks Julie!
Julie Broad knows of which she speaks. As co-founder of her marketing company, Book Launchers, and a successful multi self-published author herself, she’s not reaching to bring information to her audience, nor parroting the words of others. She knows exactly what to do. The reason?
She’s done it herself, and continues to do so for countless author clients, through her successful pay-for-services company.
So, if you’re one of the tens of thousands of entrepreneurs that wants to self-promote and succeed—DIY version!—you need look no further. “Self-Promote & Succeed is your book. It may also become your new best friend, too.
First, I found this a dense textbook, full of information. For me, that adds to its value. However, it’s very well formatted, making it eminently readable.
Next, the content is excellent, covering everything I can think of, and it’s also incredibly current. Ms. Broad explains first—with the intent of building a strong foundation for the rest of the book that sales and marketing are not the same thing. She specifies that marketing is ‘eyeballs and hopefully attention (on you and your book), while sales are credit cards and contact information. She also teaches that marketing can build your brand and increase the size of your platform, and that’s when you’ll start to see a difference and sell more books.
So…marketing is first.
Then, in our quest to increase our efficacy at the necessary work of marketing, she teaches us what to measure and how to do so, so we can assess the fruits of our efforts, and where to make meaningful adjustments.
Then she gets into the serious nitty-gritty.
The next section starts with how to build your author brand, and your personal story. How to find your own voice and use it—so your work is as effortless and authentic as possible. How to make your brand visual, and how to create the messaging for your brand are also covered.
Then Ms. Broad dives into social media and how to create those all-important relationships. Once again, she says, sales are not the target here, but relationships. Email marketing is well explained, as is a content calendar. Networking for introverts is additionally considered, and helpful.
Ms. Broad continues by covering reviews, libraries, podcast promotions, and ‘banging on the bookstore door as she calls it. Public speaking and audiobooks are also here, to promote your work.
It seems no avenue is left unaddressed.
As a self-published author myself, and someone who’s played in many of these pools, I am impressed with her information. It’s bang on, and insightful. I’m also impressed with how current and to the moment it is.
In conclusion, Ms. Broad has penned an excellent book that can help entrepreneurs—both introverts and extroverts—stop wasting their time. You’ll learn how to become proficient at this all-important business topic, as well as understand its different facets and purposes.
And finally? If you love pretty colored pens and highlighters, like I do, grab them, along with your sticky notes. Create a reading or study schedule…and start taking in this information seriously.
Or simply…dip into Julie Broad’s “Self-Promote and Succeed. You’ll learn much even from a quick dive and be able to start applying the time-tested techniques. Rapidly.
And for us busy, DIY entrepreneurs? That’s definitely a win.
Fantastic, pick up the paperback and get your highlighter out!
Julie Broad demonstrates she is at the top of the self-publishing game. Self-Promote and Succeed is the most up to date, comprehensive book on the market. From launching your self-published book to ongoing long-term success, this book is invaluable. I wholeheartedly recommend it for any author, anywhere along the writing process on the path to self-publishing. Ms. Broad’s writing style is casual and accessible, making the information easy to digest, even if you are a newbie to the world of self-publishing. Step-by-step she guides you through the process of the real ends-and-outs of promoting your book. From her considerable experience and success in self-publishing, she lifts the veil, and tells you what it really takes to succeed in the world of self-publishing. This will become your go to reference guide for promoting your book(s). Every aspect of promoting is discussed, from how to use meta-data, select book categories, book distribution, how to get book reviews, using social media, to promoting your book through podcasts, media appearances, live events. Julie ‘the book Broad did it again. Author of Self-Promote and Succeed and founder of Book Launchers, offers authors a step by step on how to promote their books. The information and resources are clearly stated offering a variety of choices to fit one’s personal comfort zone. At the same time in the “book Broad way we are guided to go beyond our comfort zone. Furthermore, Julie encourages and guides us to go beyond selling books-to use our books to grow our brand and business, and to become a thought leader. I found the summary at the end of each chapter convenient to refer back and find a specific topic. An absolutely must purchase for authors planning to self-publish and for those who have, already, self-published. I highly recommend Self-Promote and Succeed. Stella Nahatis, author of Taxi to America, a Greek Orphan’s Adoption Journey.
Julie Broad’s book “Self Promote & Succeed is an easy to follow guidebook that is perfect for any author who is planning on self publishing a nonfiction book (or who is self published already)!
As a nonfiction self published author myself, I wish I would have read this book first. The great news is, this book is jam packed with valuable information that I can still use, for my first book and for my next book, too!
Any nonfiction self publishing scenario that one can think of (or NEEDS to think of) is covered in this book & you can be certain it’s #noboringbooks material! Julie keeps it light, serious when it needs to be, with bits of humor thrown in here & there for good measure. You can tell the author really wants you to succeed! Great vibe, wonderful book. Thank you Julie & BookLaunchers.TV!
I have been following Julie Broad on her YouTube channel and have listened to one of her other books. I'm so glad that I purchased this book (as an ebook) so that I can repeatedly refer to it. There were so many actions that I wanted to take for marketing my book better as a result of her strategies. I knew a lot of these as I have learned a lot over the 9 months since I published my book - much of it from her training. But there were still more ideas that she taught me. Her writing style is very friendly, and she includes both positive and negative examples, which I appreciate. She also refers to others and their resources who can help the reader. This is the type of marketing book that you want to be sure to have a copy to keep so you can refer back to it.
Julie has created a powerful resource that will help both novice and experienced writers.
When I wrote my first book I figured the content alone would just magically sell the book. I will say having great content is important, however, I learned quickly that marketing was going to increase sales, which would allow me to reach and help many people.
Even as an experienced writer I was excited to read this book and now that I have read it will keep it close as a reference guide.
For example, I can picture myself referencing chapter 19 in the future: "What should I do if my book isn't selling"
If you are an independent writer, this book is a must read! So many actionable strategies to help you launch and promote your book. I also recommend following Book Launchers and Julie the Book Broad on Youtube.
I loved this book! It's a must read for all indie authors who write nonfiction. It's got so many great ideas with real life examples of how they have been used successfully. My favorite thing about this book is that it helps you figure out which marketing you should do based on your goals.
A good book with a lot of the basics on self-promotion. Most of the content centered around non-fiction (I realize that was the target market), but there were still a lot of useful tips for any author.
Excellent book! I learned so much about marketing books and the book world in general. The author is very honest and knowledgeable about what works and what doesn’t. Highly recommended!
I wanted to write and publish my first book with Julie's help from her videos and deep dives as well as her amazing book Self-Publish and Succeed. Then let it ride on its own... until this book. I'm just through the first 6 chapters and already I am viewing this experience from a deeper and more intimate relationship with my own authorship journey. Julie knows how to get us to trust who we are especially when it comes to our "Brand". I didn't even realize that what I had been building all my life IS my brand. I am my brand. She opened many doors and windows as to what lays in front of me beyond publishing my book. Suddenly I have the confidence to go along with the details, and strategies so beautifully laid out in her step by step process. The emotional hurdles are fading fast. She has been and continues to be the wind beneath my author wings. After decades of being in film publicity and promotion I dreaded going back in. However I see now this is more of an intimate soul journey between ourselves and our readers. Her two books on Self-Publishing and Promotion are, in my opinion, the Go To Reference books for Self-Publishers.
This book was such a surprising read for me! Mostly because it is *not* about self-promotion only (and that’s a good thing). I’m sure there is not a single person out there who is not weirded out by the idea of going out there, putting themselves out there, and doing all the self-promoting things. Ewww. That’s yucky. That’s tacky. That’s ewww! Right? Yeah, so this book is not about it. It is mostly a common sense talk. With lots of points that really make sense. Like, one for me? The one that was the biggest YES for me? I got validation for my years-long experience and observation that social media is not the magic place to get sales from. No influencer will bring in sales just because they look cute doing whatever it is they get for free from me. And here I was, thinking I was doing something wrong because everyone else acts like it works for them! Nope, it doesn’t work. at least not to that extent. This reads more like a chitchat with a friend, one who is just sharing their own experience, not someone who is telling you what to do or promising you a magic formula to a zillion sales.
Writing a book is only a part of the journey, promoting a book is a different chapter. This book has a good outline of instructions on how to help promoting a book. There are many useful tips and resources that can be applied while bringing a book to the market. Some of them are well known and some I found new. Still this book is worth reading for new ideas.
A great book for authors to gain some more insight into how to get their book out there. It's filled with a lot of practical types, but would be great for someone looking for a more comprehensive plan as to what they should do for their book promotion.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for an arc. All opinions expressed are my own.
