Wittmore U Hockey #1

Faking It with the Forward

Rate this book

What happens when the captain of the hockey team kisses you in front of his ex?

Things get awkward.

What happens when he asks you to be his fake girlfriend?

Things get complicated.

In the high-pressure world of varsity hockey at Wittmore U, being the team intern means more than overseeing grueling workouts and injuries. It's the colossal egos of the players that truly test my patience. Even if they did see me as something more than another locker room fixture created to tend to their bodies, my boss has made one thing clear:

I’m off limits.

All of that changes in a heartbeat when Reese Cain, team's womanizing captain, plants a surprise kiss on me in the campus coffee shop. Suddenly, I’m thrust into the spotlight, and not for my awkward charm. The captain, it seems, has ulterior motives—he needs to stay focused on the season, while convincing his ex that he's not available. Apparently, I’m the perfect pawn in his game.

For someone who's more comfortable in hoodies than house parties, fake dating Reese is enough to bolster both my confidence and social status. But the longer we keep up the charade, and our barriers start to crumble, it’s hard to know what’s real and what’s fake.

Especially how good he makes it feel to belong to him.

Nothing kills a book faster for me than a FMC I can’t stand. Twyler started out fine but got progressively worse 🙄🙄🙄 The reason for the third act break. Ridiculous 🤡 I actually liked the fake dating part in the beginning. There was good tension and I got the feels I was looking for as they started to discover they might not be faking anymore.

I don’t even have the patience to write a rant review of this, but the second half was just a huge miss on so many levels, except for Reece. He was really sweet once he caught feelings but was way too good for Twyler. 💆🏻‍♀

I’ll stick to Angel’s dark romance.

It was fine but really annoying at times. I liked the premise and it had me enough that I finished it but there were too many things that took me out of it.

First off the trope switch was weird, started as fake dating then moved into forbidden romance, strange but not a deal breaker. The thing that bothered me the most was the constant «she’s not like other girls» surrounding the heroine. At one point the best friend literally says it and I was ready to pull my hair out. Honestly I liked the h fine but whenever we were in the Hs POV it was constant «omg she took her hair down and didn’t wear a hoodie and now she’s the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen» and jersey chaser this and pick bunny that when talking about any other female character including the best friend which happens in hs POV too! It’s annoying and I hated that part which was prevalent throughout the story.

Sport Romance
Fake Dating

Angel excuse me?! Where did you keep this side of you! I loved this! This is like a whole well other side of Angel cause she usually write books that are full of TW/CW this one has CW/TW But its not as much its a little. Angel writes bully and why choose, but I truly love this cute romance and i swooned for Twy and Reese.

It was a unusual name at first, Twyler, but I got used to it. Reese just became Captain of the Hockey team and his Ex wants him back *side eye*. Twyler is a trainer in the team and she helps injuries and all that jazz and the players treat her like a bro teaser her a bit , BUT SHES OFF LIMITS.

Until Reese has the idea of fake dating her in exchange of yo imma help you get back in the dating game. She’s awkward ish but not really she just doesnt like dating jocks. I just LOVE THE TENSION between the two. Reese oh my god BRAVO. Book boyfriend and irl boyfriend material. Swoon, sighed, and sweat. This is a tamer version and sweet. So if you want something sweet to read then this is it. Reese being jealous was cute🥹.

Again even if its a tamer version of the authors read please read tw 🥹

So, I've only read Samgel books so far. All of Angel's books are on my TBR... I just haven't got to it yet (for clarifications, I've read the FU books and the Preston Prep books). So, I've only read dark romance from her.
But holy sh1t, I didn't know what I was missing. If Angel has written other romcom types of books, I need to get to it immediately. This was awesome! It's very light as she's said. Although be aware that there is reference to past domestic abuse and an off-page possible exploitation situation (not with the h or H). It's quirky, it's fun, it's got almost a magical feel to it.
I love the introverted representation because I am one myself and it feels so good to have representation without the added "how to fix us" dialogue. Twyler (props to the name selection here) is closed off, she's struggling with some demons but has been conquering them. She's imperfect just like any human is and faces step-backs like we often do.
Reese appears to be the stereotypical, one-dimensional, varsity athlete jock at first. Just like all of his teammates, but there's so much more to him and them, as we quickly discover. Reese has his own battles and has to figure out the mantle of captainship while realising how blind he's been with his own trainer.
And then, there's the rommate/best friend, Nadia. I cannot wait to see what becomes of her. At first, I was wary, then I was pissed, then I was horrified on her behalf and wanted to burn the building down for her. She's a fantastic secondary character and I cannot wait to see what her story is.
All in all with it a 10/10 for me and I would definitely recommend it.

I enjoyed this fake dating story. It was a bit of a slow burn. Reese turned out to be pretty mature, helping Twyler with her issues as well as solving his own problem- a clingy ex who just saw him as dollar signs. This was kinda a grumpy (Twyler), sunshine (Reese). The spice wasn’t too spicy, but I enjoy what it gave. This is probably what I would call a feel good book- even though Twy has her trauma’s, nothing too bad happens. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Not the Best

I thought this book was ok. It was your standard fake relationship turned real kind of book. Very cliche.

Twyler and Reese begin dating so Reese doesn't fall into the hands of his ex, Shanna. Apparently she messes with his head. What does Twyler get out of having a fake relationship, with a guy she blushes around but claims not to be interested in? Nothing really. Supposedly it was supposed to teach her how to be social and perhaps get a real boyfriend out of it, but Twyler never really attempted to be with other guys and anytime a guy seemed interested in Twyler, Reese would get territorial. This was supposed to be a slow-ish romance but I still felt like they transitioned to having real feelings& a real relationship very quickly and too easily. It was like as soon as Reese realized Twyler had b0obs under her hoodies he Suddenly couldn't get her off of his mind. This happened in like the first few pages. Interesting since they weren't friends before and they hardly ever spoke outside of a professional setting and just a few pages before he was saying she was like a little brother. I wasn't a huge fan of his sudden infatuation with Twyler.

Also, the characters in this book aren't the most likeable. The boys are either manwh0r3s or predators and the girls are either jersey-chasers and/or victims of assault. They refused to press charges though bc they would rather forget about the whole thing and/or bc they didn't want their assaulters to think they affected them. I understand that pressing charges can be difficult, but I didn't like how the women were written to be simply okay with not going to the police and okay with what happened because it's just part of college life. That's actually not normal.

Focusing specifically on Twy I honestly couldn't get myself to like her. I didn't hate her but she wasn't a strong character. She was constantly crying and LITERALLY running away from her problems. Reese would always have to chase her down. The only aspect of her life that she was mature in was her job but even then once she got with Reese she just became really immature to me. For example, her boss addressed his concerns with how close she was getting to Reese, because it's difficult for female trainers to be taken seriously. This is a legitimate concern. She then got upset because she felt he wouldn't be saying the same to a male trainer. I didn't understand her outrage because she did in fact have an inappropriate relationship with Reese. Also when she came face to face with someone who hurt her friend, she was going to let them off because they knew about her relationship with Reese. It was fine when she was putting her job in jeopardy but when someone else gets involved, SUDDENLY she realized how important her job was to her. I especially didn't like that Twy knew that this person was going to hurt another girl, even met the girl that could possibly be hurt, gave subtle non-specific warnings, then wiped her hands clean of the whole situation. She simply said "well, I tried." 😑 If you KNOW a guy is a predator, don't try to be covert or inconspicuous, just tell the next girl the truth. None of these girls had each other's backs and the boys were free to continue doing what they wanted.

Another issue I had is that this whole fake relationship happened because of Reese's ex and Twy was all introverted because of her ex, but their exes played a miniscule part in this book. Shanna showed up twice, once in the beginning and once at the end Twy's ex Ethan showed up twice and each time he did, Twy ran away with her tail between her legs. Again I tried to be understanding because of the trauma he caused but at the same time I wanted her to stand strong at least one time in this book. Just once. This never happened though bc his second scene was his last.

Honestly, I felt like nothing was resolved in this book because with every obstacle there was a brief confrontation which was either later forgotten or skated past. If the author wasn't going to tackle the many issues in this book then they should have avoided including them. This really just could've been your standard angst-free friends to lovers or opposites attract book. Too many things in this book just felt unnecessary.

Introduction:
Faking It with The Forward is an enjoyable sports romance, perfect for fans of college hockey and fake dating tropes. As a lover of sports romances, this one kept me hooked, even though the premise felt familiar.

Characters & Relationship:
Twyler is a determined yet vulnerable heroine, struggling with insecurity after a toxic relationship, while Reese is just looking for something easy—until he gets to know Twyler better. Their relationship is sweet and steamy, with real emotional depth as they help each other.

Themes & Depth:
The story also explores more serious themes like self-esteem issues among girls and toxic behaviour among athletes. The author thoughtfully handles an important issue involving a sex video, adding unexpected weight to the plot.

Conclusion:
Overall, Faking It with The Forward is a charming, easy read with some meaningful layers that will appeal to fans of sports romance and fake dating dynamics!

I mean even the author calls this a pallet cleanser and it most certainly is, but one I enjoyed thoroughly!
Proper hockey romance, all the cuteness and swooning you would expect, in a really great way though. The issues they work through, the commitment to their professions and each other, all of it is super fun and super cute. A first from the writer from me, the book inspiring me to give her darker stuff a go - so all in all a successful read for me!!

Who doesn't love fake dating and hockey players?
This book had me feeling all the feels. The way Reese respected her boundaries with everything that happened in her past, and the way he just cared for her made my heart hurt. Twyler eye for details when it came to the medical history with the whole team was amazing, she was so passionate about her job, which was incredible. I did not want this book to end, I wanted it to go on forever. It also had the perfect amount of spicy and the way Reese worshipped her, oh my gosh!

This book had me hooked from beginning to end. I really love the fake dating trope because one or both partners usually end up falling for the other even if it’s in the agreement not to. From Reese’s first interaction with Twyler calling her the teams little brother, I knew it was over. And his nickname for her? Sunshine ☀ Swoon. Reese is such a gentleman that lives off of consent and I’m here for it and guys need to take lessons from Reese. From his encounter at the party and not wanting to let Twyler walk home alone he had my heart.

Learning about Twyler’s past trauma was so heartbreaking but totally understandable. She avoids guys because all they were to her is a let down so she dresses her self down and puts up a wall so she doesn’t get hurt again. But when Reese proposes a deal to boost her confidence, she jumps at the opportunity. But as the story progresses she does gain more confidence and learns that not all guys are jerks which includes Reese.

I loved Reese and Twyler from beginning to end and will definitely recommend this book to anyone who needs a palate cleanser.. with a hot possessive guy who has a dirty mouth.. 🥵🥵 Plus who doesn’t love hockey romance? GO READ IT!!

Thoughts 💭
Twyler Perkins is the typical quiet girl who is doing an internship as a sport trainer for her college hockey team. Reese Cain is the captain of the hockey team and feels like he has his life planned out. Both going through a breakup and each having dealing with it differently. Until Reese has the bright idea to help him get away from his ex girlfriend and in return help Twyler with her awkwardness and help heal from her past. Fake dating until the lines get blurred and it’s not what either of them had planned.

First, let me start off by saying I love Angel Lawson! Anything she writes I’m gonna read and the darker the better for me. Now this book was a little different it wasn’t dark but did have some dark tendencies in it. It dealt with emotional, physical abuse and toxic relationships (after math) that I related to very much. It takes you down the path of finding healing in an odd way. Reese was your typical alpha male who saw Twyler and didn’t want her but yet didn’t want anyone else to have her. Then one day it all changed for him. I really like this book! I read it in one sitting and then listened to it on audible and it did not disappoint! I loved the plot and the side characters were just as amazing as the main characters. Now this is a slow and I mean a slow burn and when it happens it was amazing. I wasn’t mad about. the plot really did make up for it. So if you’re into enemy to friend to lover trope and love the angst in your books pick this one up! You will not be disappointed.

And can we talk about the best friends in this book! I just love Reid and Nadia..

This book was fun. The characters were distinct and grabbed my attention. I was definitely invested in them early on. The plot was fleshed out well and kept my interest. The author's writing style was good but could have used a little something extra. It wasn't cringey or basic but it felt a little tame at times. The world-building was descriptive and the college vibe radiated throughout. The romance was pretty adorable. I love the fake relationship trope and this one started off great and kept delivering. This book was a first for me from this author and I am glad that I gave it a chance. Overall, this was a solid story with memorable characters and an excellent plot that kept me wanting more. I've already bought the second book on audiobook and I am about to dive into it! This author will definitely stay in my TBR rotation.

I was in a reading slump, and this is the first book I was actually able to finish. Was it the best book I’ve ever read? No. Did it have an amazing plot? Also no. Did I love reading it? Absolutely yes.

This book is about Twyker and Reese—she works for the hockey team, and he is a player. The plot is pretty basic, but it pulls you in.

It all starts when he kisses her to stop his ex from bothering him, but from the very first moment, he begins to develop feelings for her. I thought it would be more of an enemies to lovers story, but it turned out to be more insta-love. I really loved their relationship, but the story focused more on her than on him. When I read a book with both POVs, I like to get to know both main characters equally.

One thing I really didn’t like was how the situation with her friend was handled. She was a victim of SA, and I don’t think it was addressed properly. I hope that in another book, Nadia gets to tell her story.

Overall, it was a quick and enjoyable read. Is it kind of like The Deal but more detailed? I’m not sure—I think the plot is very similar yet different at the same time. If you’re considering reading this book, my answer is a definite yes.

This was great I loved it!

Twyler is an intern for the hockey team and she always wears baggy hoodies and ties her hair so the team treats her as a part of the boys. Reese, the team captain, even tells the Coach that she is like their little brother. Twyler bumps into Reese at a coffee shop. Reese spots Shanna, his ex who is trying to get him back, and kisses Twyler. From there they decide to fake date so Reese can get rid of Shanna and Twyler can become more social and hopefully get a boyfriend.

I loved them both so much. Reese was everything. He was ALL IN!!!! Ugh he has my heart. The side characters were great too and I can’t wait for their stories.

Nadia, Twyler’s bff, got on my nerves so much. She was annoying and her only personality was being an athlete’s girlfriend and a jersey chaser. Twyler entrusted her to get tickets for a concert, and Nadia didn’t because she decided to fuck Brent Reynolds (i think he was a baseball player) and Nadia was like I couldn’t pass up the chance because I always wanted to sleep with Brent. What a trashy friend with a shitty personality.

The next book is the series is Nadia’s and Axel’s. I don’t know if I’ll read it or not because I hate Nadia. And in the end she will end up with Axel which is an athlete. What a great achievement for a jersey chaser.

I am in need of a ice hockey man if my life please 😍🥵

Reese is the captain and his reputation is well known but holypuckingmoly he is mature, genuine and a real loving guy deep down. When a moment of madness happens when his Ex shows up and he kisses the trainer the whole situation explodes and it's friggin exciting!

Twyler is shy and not a jersey chaser and her shyness is a cute unique to the story. But her past interfers and she takes a stand and I'm all friggin for it.

"𝐍𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚’ 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭. 𝐈𝐭’ 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞."

Why do the hot hockey guys always a big support network that extends to their girls too 🥵😍 It literally makes me smile when reading. Yes i am a sucker for the term "my girl" and when the team use it as a way to show support. Holypuckingmoly I'm a goner😍

The ending to this book was just right and melted my friggin heart.

I was giddy reading this one. I had a feeling from the blurb in the front of the book it would get a little dramatic, so I think it helped ease me into it.

I adored the first half. It was a cute “let’s fake date mutually beneficial deal. The chemistry was intense the fake dating scenarios were on point with his hoodie and arm around her shoulders.

I think I wasn’t such a big fan of how quickly it went to REAL FEELINGS. I was enjoying the flirting and innuendos and build up a lot.

I understood that any decent book has to have plot points but I didn’t like “date a player and lose internship like no sir you don’t have the right.

Also, kind of interesting with the videos, I borderline saw that coming just not from the quiet CJ.

Cannot wait for Axel and Nadia’s book!
