Mina Carter is a New York Times & USA Today bestselling author of romance in many genres. She lives in the UK with her husband, daughter, a puppy who pays no attention to her whatsoever, and a bossy cat.
Here's a question I've asked several times as I've read one of Mina Carter's latest Latharian-led books--what is happening?
For years, she produced solid, interesting, sometimes complex books with fascinating characters, good plots, spicey sex, and fun dialogue. She created a deep universe peopled by warriors, with wildly different tribes, political unrest, societies in transition, and uneasy Earth relations as a newly discovered species tries to save its dying population. But this book is another mediocre imitation of her earlier stories.
I don't get it. MC is awesome. She writes in a flow that should be envied by other authors. Her characters are typically solidly 3D, strongly detailed, and interesting. Her storylines are highly entertaining. Her dialogue is always right on, clear, realistic, funny, and totally believable. But here is yet another book that has no plot. Or actually the plot is based on that clumsy miscommunication trope, which in this case can't even be called that since the two leads don't have a single conversation in the 5 or 6 days they are together about ANYTHING. Not sure which trope that's supposed to be. Oh, but the female lead has an interior monologue at one point about coffee, and the cup she's using that runs for 4 pages. So there's that.
This is like book 25 or something in this world, even if this is some kind of offshoot from the original series. That a mate would simply be dropped off with no info, nothing, and deposited like a meat bag for comsumption by a fairly indifferent host doesn't at all fit into MC's mythos, writing style, or logic. At this point in the whole Latharian universe, there shouldn't be any situations where there are initial cultural misunderstandings of such magnitude. I just don't get it.
The female lead is a sadly stereotyped damsel in financial distress. Her backstory is thinner than tissue, and she doesn't seem to have much personality on the page other than panic, anger, and vague lust. She asks her new mate questions that he answers in the most general of terms. He seems to refuse all her tiny entreaties with a solid wall of nothing. He doesn't ask her a single question from the moment they meet until the end of the book. No joke. I'm not kidding at all. He knows nothing about her, literally nothing, and makes no attempt nor does he show the slightest interest in her. Well, except he wants to consummate the relationship. Oh, yeah, and they fall in love. That's it. That's the supposed relationship we're all to be fascinated by enough to want to continue reading this book as well as future ones. And of course, we get the baby trope dropped in there at the end. Gag.
I've invested years into this series. That feeling of opening (not literally any more!) a book, reading these first few pages and knowing you are in a familiar universe in the best way, is pretty priceless. It's not like that anymore, and it makes me really sad.

Just when I think this author has reached the pinnacle of her writing career, she releases a new book that is even better! This book is absolutely amazing with the selfless heroine who ends up finding what she didn’t know she was looking for, and the hardcore alpha male who won’t give up on her no matter what he thinks he knows. Like many love stories, these two encounter some bumps in the road because they’ve only ever had themselves to rely on. But the author had them both embrace their pasts so they can find their future. I love the interaction between the characters and the way they came together. This is a story that I couldn’t put down and can’t wait to read again. Not to mention the tantalizing tidbit the author left us with at the very end. I can’t wait to see who the next mate is going to be!
This wasn't terrible but not her usual quality of work. So little communication, assumptions and yet they love each other. I was a bit disappointed with this one. Me, personally, wouldn't have not explained why I needed help.
Alien Crusader’s Mate is the second book set within the Latharian Mate Program series. Halle signs up for the Latharian Mate Program in order to save her nephew, but Kaas has his own first impressions about his new match. As they navigate their new mating and learn to trust one another, will this be a perfect match, or a match made in misery?
This was a good book and a fun addition to the series about the hardships at the beginning of a new mating. Halle and Kaas both came into their mating with preconceived notions about what their partner would be like, but I loved that neither could really resist what they feel for the other. Halle was fiercely protective of those she loved, proud, pretty independent, and used to solving problems. Kaas was proud and bound by his duty to his past. I loved that while he was worried about his mate and what she might think of him and his past, he also did little things to show his love and acceptance of her. They had good chemistry! I enjoyed all of the drama present in this story, between the danger with her nephew and just the drama of new mates. My only complaint is that I wish there was more relationship development between Halle and Kaas. All in all, this book was a fun, quick, read and I look forward to more in this series!
You can't help but feel for Halle. Her sister loves her son and would do anything for Ollie but she doesn't have a solid grasp on just how they are going to pay for it. But I don't think Sadie was too happy when she found out Halle has basically sold herself to the LMP!
Kaas and Halle have a bit of a bumpy introduction and he'll put his foot in his mouth more than once when he makes some assumptions about Halle. But then Halle doesn't exactly come clean about why she was one of the few potential mates to basically demand a dowry from her potential mate!
Between shady doctors, unethical medical procedures and reclamations and a handsy Latharian who wants to steal her away from her mate, Halle got a bit of a baptism of fire on the space station! There was enough intrigue and adventure for this shorter length story and I loved getting a chance to meet with some favourites from previous books. There's also a brief meeting between the possible leads of the next book!
Compact storyline, sizzling chemistry, protective and possessive MMC and a sassy, independent FMC. Well worthy of an hour or two of your time!
Halle takes the only avenue she sees to save her nephew. Kaas finds a mate who is money hungry. Can Kaas and Halle look past their preconceptions to see the mate that is perfect for them? Alien Crusader's Mate is the latest in Mina Carter's Latharian Mate Program series. I enjoyed getting to know Kaas better. He is feared but most but I loved seeing that he is more than his job title. I loved seeing the softer, insecure side. I loved seeing him with Halle. Halle had her own issues. She wasn't looking for love. She wasn't looking for family. She wasn't looking for a better life, at least not for herself. I enjoyed seeing her look past her dislike. She began to see Kaas as a "person" and not a means to an end. I enjoyed that Ms. Carter allowed Halle to see that the aliens appreciated her as mire than a broodmare. They were looking for more than a female, they were looking for a connection. I loved the journey Kaas and Halle took to not only fond each other but also to "see" who they were paired with. I thoroughly enjoyed their journey and look forward to where Ms. Carter will take use next.
The human race never fails to disappoint. Halle is the Defacto head of her small family consisting of herself, her sister and her young nephew. When the world screws with them yet again they have nowhere to turn so Halle does something she never thought she would; sign up for the Latharian Mate Program.
This was a fast-paced read that kept me interested but frustrated because all it would take is a simple conversation. But, aliens are involved and Halle has something called pride. So moving on assumptions are made, mean words spoken and a life-threatening crisis force Halle and her match, Kaas, to finally confront the skeletons in the closet that may have deadly consequences.
The Latharian men take such care of their mates and seem to revere women as a whole. What's not to love? World building is on point if depressing (earth is now a toilet) and while Kaas and Halle tiptoe around each other, chemistry isn't a problem. Thoroughly inhaled this installment and as always anxious for the next.
Halle was in need of help for her nephew. Ollie was sick and needed medical help but the price of five hundred thousand credits was extreme. The only option she had was to become a Latharian Mate but add a stipulation. As long as Ollie was cared for, she would do what she could. Kaas V’aant was a healer now interrogator. He has seen the loose of many. When he learns that he is matched, he isn’t sure what that means.
I do love that Kaas has the biggest heart. He helped his friend M’aatar’s child, Hunter get an education. He may be half Llaroxi but he is smart kid. The money is a sticking point through this. We learn about Kaas issue with it. Halle learns that looks are just a side point when it comes to Kaas. He is protective and loving. Boy the Latharian really need to get more brides. These guys are really desperate for companionship. The passion these two have just opens up both their worlds. And we learn about Dr. Crane too. He is scum. I am looking forward to finding out what will happen to Vaarn and Sadie in Alien Inventor’s Mate.
I admit I’m a sucker for the Lathars and have been a fan from the beginning of this series. If you haven’t read any yet, grab the first one & binge to your heart’s content!
Halle is desperate for the money needed to cure her nephew. Her sister Sadie is clueless about how impossible it is for them to come up with that kind of money. Halle decides to sell herself into the Latharian Mate Program.
Kaas V’aant agrees to pay the sum his matched mate Halle asks for. But he doesn’t ask her why she needs it. Big mistake. He assumes she is just greedy. They have a shaky beginning, but are starting to get along when it all falls apart! No spoilers here.. Grab your copy for the dramatic conclusion..I told you I love the Lathars!
I received a free copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What the Latharian Mate Program offered was the only thing left. Halle was desperate and willing to do anything for her nephew and sister while Kaas had no choice as he knew there would be no other chance for him. I liked Halle's character, not full of skills like previous heroines, but with a big and sacrificial heart. She was even willing to put her best into her relationship with the scarred Lathar despite the doubts and fears that plagued her. Her nephew's predicament saddened me and Kaas's denial of his former life intrigued me. I liked that there was a strong chemistry from the beginning despite the misunderstandings between the two. Lots of action, suspense, drama, moments of terror, a despicable villain, drama, camaraderie, romance, and passion. I voluntarily reviewed this interesting and entertaining copy that I liked.
This was honestly the worst book in the Lathar world series I've read too Date. First the MMC guy's supposed to be an interrogator and yet he doesn't even ask what someone would want with 500 million, Really? Then the MMC, he's the "boogeyman" of the Lathar, but some business man type stands up to him and fights rather than flees in fear? Seriously? The FMC somehow gets back to the surface of Earth, no one tries to stop her, and no one notices. What ship did she take? Who flew her back? And somehow she made it back in time to save her nephew but the Lathar rescue party had to land their ship blocks from the building her bracelet "lojack" is signaling from?
I generally like all the books in the Lathar world series but this one was just awful. And it contributed nothing to the overall series arch that I can tell. It was a dumb fast read, which is the best I can say for it.
Halle is desperate to save the life of nephew. She nor her sister can afford the life saving treatment he needs. The only solution Halle comes up with is signing up for the Latharian mate program. Marry an alien. Live on the space station. Leave your family behind. Never have to worry about work or money ever again. But a little boy will live. Halle is matched with Kaas, a former healer and enforcer to the emperor. Kaas is intense to say the least. Kaas gives orders, people follow them. No question. These two are thrown together after being matched and Kaas agrees to pay Halle's bride fee. In his mind, he owns her now. These two get into some interesting mishaps.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am leaving a voluntary review.
I just devoured Mina Carters newest book, Alien Crusaders Mate, which is the 2nd book in the Latharian Mate Program. This book introduces us to a human named Halle who desperately needs money for her nephews medical treatment. So she signs up for the Latharian Mate Program and immediately gets matched to Kaas the emperors interrogator. This books takes them on the journey to finding love and understanding. I really love the world building that Mina does. And the characters are engaging and fully developed. These are people you care about. I recommend this book and I am excited to read the next one in this series.
Second book of the series. It can be read as a standalone but is better if read as a series. What do you do when those you love will die because of money? Are you willing to sell even your soul to save them? For Halle, that is what she is willing to do and more. To become a mate to an alien stranger. They may look somewhat like humans but oh my is there some differences. Her alien will be a shock and she will be a surprise to him. The story has plenty of tension and some heat. The romance builds as the trust does. But it seems even male aliens have trouble understanding and communicating with women.
I hated to take a star off because it is a good book. But.... It felt rushed. I will continue the series I think. I try not to leave spoilers but this time I will because its bugged me. Don't read on if you don't want to know too much . . . . The reason I say it felt rushed is we went from they sleep together to a few hours later boom baby. I'm will to give that human medical technology is advancing quickly but.. Less than 24 hours after conception doesn't make sense for it to show up on a scan. At that point it doesn't show in blood work either. I feel like giving the couple a few days before the show down would have worked better in my mind.
I really liked this novella. Kaas and Halle did not start off on the right foot. She joined the mating program and asked for a large sum of $ to pay for her nephew’s surgery but that led Kaas, her matched mate to think she is all about $ and is selfish. They eventually warm up to each other but he still harbors his misconception. I enjoyed their banter and how they were a bit volatile with each other in the beginning. Makes their tender moments even more sweet. I like how strong and alpha Kaas is and does everything needed to protect her. I enjoyed this and recommend this book.
Unfortunately, while there is a lot of potential, this book really did not live up to it. So the guy is a sex god, that now means she is in love with him? Even if he treats her badly, accusing her of untrue things, and like her life with him is all that matters and everything else should be forgotten? Her family should be forgotten? And the ending... I am so unhappy with this book. The few books I read of Mina's have been fast paced and a bit like it was missing an interaction or chapter to explain character emotions and interactions but this one takes the cake. I'm out.
I could not stop reading this book once I started! Halle is a complex leading character, she's the kind of person you hope you could be someday. She's a strong female, hard working and protective of her family. Kaarn also has layers, and he's growly but still tender. The tension builds and a lot of it comes from things they don't say. This whole series is full of amazing stories and deep characters like the ones depicted here, so even if this is your first dip into it, you will want to read the rest too, guaranteed to just binge them till you can't see straight anymore!
Assumptions be damned . Kaas and Halle each have heavy emotional weights to carry on their shoulders, but each fails to realize that their burdens would lessen if only they shared their burdens. Throw in Halle's sister Sadie, the nephew Ollie needing medical help, an exorbitant price from an unscrupulous doctor, support from Lathar characters from previous books, and a taste of the next book in this series and any reader has a marvelous book to read. This is another sensational addition to Ms. Carter's Lathar series.
I love that Halle is such a strong character even though she thinks she has to take on all of her problems by herself and not ask for help. I could feel her desperation to protect her sister and nephew and the fear of leaving them to be an alien bride. Kaas had many feelings to work through also, especially his insecurity in his own worth. While they work out their differences and fight a burning attraction the underbelly of humanity is plotting to cause their family pain. Another Latharian tale to warm your heart.
The Lathar are an absolute favorite of mine, Halle and Kaas' story certainly went above and beyond to define what it is to be utterly devoted to your fated mate. To say that their path had more than a fair share of misunderstandings while experiencing white hot passion for each other doesn't even begin to describe all that was involved. The dream is to have that level of commitment intertwined with knowing the attraction and respect will always be there. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book.
This is the second book set within the Latharian Mate Program series, Halle and Kass don't get off to the best of starts theirs is a story that proves you shouldn't make rash judgements. She signed up for the Latharian Mate Program for money yes, but not for herself, it was to save her nephew. Kaas's first impression was that she was greedy and only interested in money but it takes time to get to know someone and it takes time to learn to trust one another, and nearly losing what they could have for them to appreciate it.
An exciting addition to the series! Book 2 of the Latharian Mate series gives us Kaas V’aant story and it was everything I wanted and more. Halle would do anything for her sister and nephew and when it’s out to the test she finds herself as a match to be a mate for Kaas. Their first meeting didn’t go smoothly, but as she gets to know her new mate she discovers his has more to offer. What happens next was a exciting, steamy and enjoyable addition to the series. I loved how the characters relationship became more as the many twist that brings life to the storyline.
The Latharian Doctor/Interrogator lead was very intense. I enjoyed the story and look forward to others in series. Hope author adds some length between match and mate-hood. A few days is not enough. Would have loved a afterword about the Latharian men volunteering to help the poor areas on earth. With green spaces, new safe housing. As well help set up free medical clinics for kids, women. Would give more men opportunity to pair up and help keep the population healthy and spread good will.
I wish I could give this read ten stars! I love everything Mina Carter writes but this one, well, I could not wait to get back home to finish it. Alien Crusader’s Mate is filled with vibrant and refreshing characters that leap off the pages into your heart. This one is a must read for followers of this genre. Carter does a good job setting up the story so you can read it without reading Book 1 but you will enjoy it more if you follow the series in order. Download and enjoy❤️❤️❤️
This was such an amazing story that I couldn't put it down. Page after page the words were just flying away, I couldn't get enough. The storyline was unique and the sacrifices we make for family is just the tip of the iceberg. Despite the atrocities that can happy in ant part of a galaxy there is always a silver lining.
Our heroine finds her happy ever after in a scar worn intimidating mate. Such an amazing ending. I wanted more!
Overall, this was a good instalment to the series. I liked it better than the first book, found it more interesting.
*spoiler* There were a few moments that didn’t quite work for me - like when the hero was acting all kind and generous and gentle, then suddenly snapped at her for wanting a job. Felt too contrived, could’ve been done smoother. Otherwise it was good, and I wish the next book was available already.
I couldn’t buy this book fast enough. Okay the cover had a lot to do with it but I also was drawn to the beauty and the beast trope. You can get the gist of the book from the other reviews but I really enjoyed the drama, the slowly coming together of Kaas and Halle, and the dynamics of the world building. Kaas coming back to appreciate teamwork of his fellow warriors was a big step too. The two epilogues were interesting as well. One for closure and another for future developments.
