In a clandestine meeting on earth, Van learns a critical bit of family history when he meets his secret benefactor.
From the halls of power in Washington to the vastness of space, the Guild moves closer to outright war as shifting alliances force everyone—including Van—to pick a side, take up arms, and fight.
But there are ghosts our there in the black, and some of them carry secrets that Mark Tudor and Petyr Groshenko refused to reveal. In the expanse of his memory, Perry finds an ancient ship, and an even older war—and neither of those things have truly gone away.
Faced with power and responsibility unlike anything he can imagine, Van Tudor is about to learn a fact that few people have ever known--
The universe looks different when you’re wearing a Master’s badge. And those who don’t have one just might want you dead.
Yeah we're closing in on the final part of the adventure but the story is still full of action, intrigue, and politics. I love the characters and all their weird quirks. I'm so glad it has lasted so long.
WARNING, ONCE YOU PICK UP DISTANT WARNING YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN.
The Backyard Starship series has to be one of the top SCI-FI series written and book 18 in the series "Distant Warning," it just continues to hold it in the best of the best SCI-FI series ever written category. Van, Torrina, Perry, Icky, and the rest of the team fight to bring law, order, and justice to known space and protect Earth from those who want to exploit Earth and the Sol System to line their pockets. I really have enjoyed this series and this last book, and I can't wait for the release of book 19 and any other future additions to the Backyard Starship series. I highly recommend this book and series to everyone who enjoys an interesting, comical, action-packed, and at times heart touching book and series.
No way to explain without giving up secrets. Van and his erstwhile crew are in the midst of a situation that was obvious from book one. Now it is out in the open and war has been declared. Van is now in a different position. Of course a shopping trip to a Walmart was inevitable. If you haven’t read 1-17 don’t read this one. Confusion will only give you a headache. On to 19.
Right off the bat and this really isn’t a spoiler if you’ve read the previous books, Peacemaker Van Tudor is becoming a Master. With all the problems he’s having protecting Earth, it’s not hard to see this coming. As a Peacemaker, he just didn’t have the authority to get the things done that he wanted. Also without Master Gerhardt backing him up at Anvil Dark, he wouldn’t have quick access to a Master for anything. So, by becoming one himself he solved several problem, one of which Is denying that position to Peacemaker Casaril. That guy was a former protege of disgraced Master Yotov. No one really wanted him to be a Master.
But again, Casaril had connections outside the Guild so Master Tudor now had more potential enemies working against him. Still, he had his hands full trying to protect Earth. Already, several factions were trying to get advanced weapons placed on Earth with people who had no business using them. And with the Special Exclusion Zone expiring, Van needed to do something to ensure the farm in Iowa was protected. He had inquired about setting up diplomatic relations with the USA and Miryam had just called to say he had a call from a State Department Deputy Secretary Loren Freirbach. So could Earth and specifically the USA actually realizing that aliens were coming to Earth on a regular basis? Van hoped so and if they still didn’t, he was going to do his utmost to make them realize that there was a greater galactic universe out there waiting to strip Earth of it’s resources one way or another.
In this book, Master Van Tudor does a lot of work around and on Earth. He and his crew locate a group of mercenaries that appear to have been provided deadly laser weapons not of Earth origin and they had used them on some innocent survey party, killing everyone. Van was going to go after these guys and make an example out of them one way or another. Some even survived the raid on their camp that Van’s crew conducted. He later found out that two aliens had also came to Earth to set up a twist communication station and they had been abandoned by the mercenaries. Van and his crew found them a few days/weeks after they captured the mercenaries and both of these aliens were happy for the rescue. So happy that they readily talked about who had hired them and also identified that another twist comm station was also beings setup some where on Earth.
As usual with these stories, Master Tudor and his crew seem to go off on tangents to other things. Like traveling to Starsmith to see about getting his Moonsword repaired. Here he also got to talk to Matterforge, a star-dwelling being that had some kind of interest in Van Tudor’s activities. From there, the *Fafnir* and crew traveled to Null World to visit with Schegith. That being had a strange request of Van. She had an offspring who was now coming into an age equivalent to a human teenager. He was also showing the same kind of attitude as a human teenager and Schegith, with all her vast intelligence, didn’t know how to deal with it. She had asked Van to talk to the kid which Van agreed, but he didn’t know how him talking to what appeared to be a young slug, Haadrake, could do any good. Yet, they did talk and Van had the idea of taking this young Schegith to Fort Cantullin so he could associate with the ever busy and excited Conoku.
While all of this was going on, Van was learning about the tons of administrative BS that a Master had to deal with. He wasn’t going to establish himself in an office on Anvil Dark as some Masters had done. No, he wanted to be out arresting bad guys and making the universe a safer place for everyone to live. Yet, Perry and others at Anvil Dark had prepared a workstation on the *FaFnir* suitable for a Master. It had the required high-level, secure communication module that the Masters used to transmit their messages. So his in-box grew to an enormous size in just a short time. Van was shocked at the amount of trivia and plane old BS that came across his starship desk.
He was particularly annoyed when Master Marlow’s letter came which accused Van of breaking several Guild rules involving his crew. The letter questioned whether his crew were “authorized Peacemaker Auxiliaries and specifically challenged the idea that Netty-P, an AI, should be even considered anything more than a tool. Such AIs were supposed to have been procured via a specific contract between the Guild and an AI manufacturer, and Netty-P had not. Van recognized that all this was petty BS and wonder how anyone could get anything done at Anvil Dark if they were allowing this kind of problems to arise. Still, because the letter was from another Master, her accusations would have to be answered at a Masters Review Board.
And so it goes with this book. There is a surprise at the end and that’s going to throw a very large twist to what will happen in future books. There may be a change to Van’s crew that no one anticipated this soon. We’ll have to find out in book 19, “Gone Nova, now available on Amazon. There’s also a pre-release announcement about a coming book 20, so the story continues.
Just enjoying the continuous high quality, humourous sci-fi
I read a review on the last book saying it had lost it's way. It's always good to get others opinions, but I don't agree, and they are wrong.
There is a formula in each book where a number of incidents take place, some linking to previous or future books, together with some character building. Then a significant something happens at the end. This is no different and starts to link a number of threats together.
Then there is the humour: I've been waiting for this quote as long as Perry has - “Nuke it from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure, Perry said.
And a peach of a conversation that resonates both with content and the humorous writing style - “There’s something I have to tell you about American males. “I’ve died and gone to heaven, Perry enthused, “Do go on. I’ll hand you your shovel.”“Silence, bird. So, it’s a known fact that most men go through a ahh, let’s call a ginger phase. We discover, pursue, and about a quarter of the time marry said redhead. Then we generally move out of that phase into— “The stage where your wife doesn’t space you for previous choices? Torina asked.
Quality.
And onto book 19. Got a week on a beach to catch up....

I love this series. The alien characters are a hoot. The Fafnir crew is more like family than a workplace & the characters that come and go are super interesting too, like that Mag-dude and the Cutinellas. You never know what to expect to happen that’s for sure. Our Van is now an official Master but unfortunately, that seems to have rialed some of his old enemies as well as some new ones. It seems they’re coming after him, his family and Earth with all barrels loaded. At the end of the book, he seems to think he’s putting all the threads together and getting a picture of what’s going on and the team seems to get where he’s going but unfortunately I didn’t get that part completely. It could be that’s how the author(s) intended it too, leave us guessing. I’m sure it’ll become clearer with the next book. Ooooh!…And there’s such exciting news in this book!
Great series, but one small annoyance, by that I mean...
Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the series thus far, but the authors have abused the "and by that I mean" schtick to the point that it is super annoying. It almost never happens irl, but it's used by practically every character in the series. In one book it's used twice on one page. Please torpedo that phrase and send its ashes into the nearest sun. It would be forgivable if it was one character's thing, but having everyone use it is egregious. Please tone it down, and by that I mean kill it. It adds nothing but unnecessary verbiage to solid storytelling. This goes triple in a crisis scenario such as combat. No one would add extra garbage words when time is of the essence.
Okay, rant complete. I do recommend the series, but beware the abuse of schtick.
A lot of series that get this long start to get into a rut. Repetitive storylines and the lack of innovation This series has avoided all of that. The story is still progressing nicely, the characters are still developing, especially Icky at the end :) This book focuses a lot more on earth, no real surprise really it was needed as previous books had just mentioned earth a little. Trying to protect earth is complex with Both internal and external forces trying to get involved. Van is now taking the gloves off and taking a much more aggressive stance, so the next book or two could prove interesting from a consequences standpoint
As always, Chaney gets us in the end with a bombshell or a cliffhanger. I love these characters. I will always come back for more.
In this one, we get Van as a freshman Master. There are a lot of Wow, Do I Really Have This Much Power? moments. But as usual there is a loyal crew around to keep him humble. There were a couple of times when I laughed out loud at the humor. This is exactly the reason I love the series. It's not complicated and it's funny.
Jeffrey Kafer has been the voice of Van and the others for so long that I can't imagine another narrator doing these books. I just wish he weren't so busy and could do them faster.
To think I almost didn't read the first book. Now 18 books later I'm more than hooked. More humor, excitement, and political intrigue, not to mention pop trivia, than any sci-fi series I've read in 65 years. With a cast of dozens of extraterrestrials fleshed out in detail, the plots remain fresh and interesting. What could be more intriguing than inheriting a spaceship from your grandfather, complete with a cheeky AI and a smart alec mechanical bird whose tongue is sharper than his lazers. Jump aboard and join the fun.
A one crew fight against the universe is a bit much!
The book was slow going way too many times and Van's war against everyone who thinks differently from him seems a bit too much. I enjoyed his story as he traveled the know universe fighting various bad guys but, as you've done in most of your other books, he's now going to war.
I started reading about Van because he was different, I will read another book before I seek a new author. As it stands, I am seriously disappointed!
I have had so much fun reading the Backyard Spaceship series. We need someone like Van and his crew to keep us from getting too stupid while we, as a world, mature.
Van has stepped in as a Master and has learned that, golly, things are worse than he thought!
My only complaint? There I was, reading along, totally hooked, and the book ended.
WARNING! Beware the phoney cliff-hanger ending. That was low! :)
My wife thinks I've lost my mind when I just start laughing out loud when I read books in this series. This is such a great story and it takes you all over the emotional spectrum. There are moments where I'm angry and seconds later I'm cheering them on! I have a big hairy crush on a big blue girl and no I'm not saying anything more. Great series so quit wasting time and read!!
Once again, Backyard Starship has exceeded my expectations. Another great story with the usual cast of characters. It's an engaging read Literally I couldn't stop reading until it was finished. It had plenty of twists and the usual humor. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Please start with book one: your reading enjoyment and story comprehension will be enhanced, and this series is too awesome to start with book 18. I laughed out loud, was scared for these fantastic characters, and may have nightmares about the photo shoot (snort laughing). There is graphic violence with a body count.
18 books in and I couldn't be happier. The story of Van and his Peacekeeping crew just keeps getting better. A series that I have re-read several times. The complex plots are believable and well thought out; the cast is varied (in species as well as character) and beautifully written. I hope that there are still plenty of cases to investigate, because I'm in this for the long haul.
Awesome book. Just when I thought were these books were headed got to left turn.
Having to create their own nation of peacekeepers. Having a planet to do so on, and the team from both Earth and all over the universe. The guy who didn't want to be a master is fixing them come the master.
Another interesting addition to the(Backyard Starship series).
An interesting addition to the(Backyard Starship series). There is a lot of Space opera action, pretty much serious space battles Van and his crew and their allies win some lose some but continue to carry on. So to para phrase an sci first icon onward and upward to the next adventure!!!
Well who would have expected it this story just gets better. A new planet called Shhh and it’s looking to belong to the Master Tudor and Torina his wife and all the other participants. Particularly of interest is Ikcru, Wowy that’s news that’ll be breaking records. Love it all keep going. Excellent work
Once again Cheney has done it with this book, the story was incredible! Some incredibly awesome twists and turns and one cute but horrifying Revelation at the end. I'm going to have a very hard time waiting for book 19! Truly the best series I've ever read, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
When I first started reading Backyard Starship I was just trying to find something to fill my time. But now I can't wait for the next installment because I can't get enough of Van Torina Icky Funboy Rab Perry and Netty, this series constantly has me laughing out loud at the sarcasm and banter between the crew. Looking forward to the next installment.
When I first saw this series, I wasn't entirely sure I wanted to read it, but I had a lull in the other series I was reading, so I gave it a chance. Turns out to be a fun story with interesting characters and it's made me laugh at times and sad at others. This particular book exposes a whole new angle that I never saw coming and now I can't wait for the next one to see what happens next.
Excellent book. Van can’t catch a break, or maybe his sword can catch a break. Van furthers the guilds diplomatic relations with the US, while finding out that he is the target and his crew are the target, once again, of bad guys, girls and assorted aliens. Add in all the extra paperwork from his promotion and you have a great story.
This was another good entry in the series. While it wasn't as satisfying as some of the others in the series, I still very much enjoyed it. It feels like it is setting up future books and opening up new opportunities vs closing old plot lines. Either way I'm excited to jump into the next book in the series.
Can't say much more about this series, except I'm about getting ready to re-read it again! This offering is great..as usual..some newer twists that we expect!! I'm wanting the next book....NOW..
The plot is thickening (again), and protection is ramping up! Earth is the new battleground and Van is determined to protect his home at all costs! It's becoming even more personal!
another great fun read, now I have to wait for the next
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
I love everything about this story! It's exciting, funny adventurous. Everything you want in a good sci Fi story to keep you reading forever! Please keep them coming!
