The Last Hunter #12

Implacable Resolve

Rate this book
In war, even the simplest things are hard.

Admiral Jack Romanoff and his people have begun the liberation of Vesuvius from the xenophobic Novarites, but even something that straightforward is difficult. The enemy outnumbers them, and removing the threat won’t be easy. Worse, they are killing humans in job lots, so time is of the essence.

When retreat isn’t an option, you must advance.

Jack wants to spare as many Novarite civilians as he can, but the killing must end. With them on a planet and him in space, that limits his options, but he will compel their surrender by any means necessary. It will be a delicate dance, but he won’t stop until they admit defeat or die.

In the face of overwhelming odds, never let your resolve waver.

THE BATTLE CONTINUES, NEW ALLIANCES ARE MADE, AND NEW FOES CROP UP TO MAKE THE FIGHT EVEN MORE DIFFI

Implacable Resolve (The Last Hunter book 12) by J.N. Chaney and Terry Mixon is a well written book which continues the story of a determined group of people fighting against the odds in which are against them to free The Confederation Space of their enemies, the Tardan's and the Novarites, with the new players on the board (The Kingdom of Kastelara), as well as the radical group The Poseidon Group. New alliances are made both within those who have stepped up and put their life's on the line to save the Confederation space and those who a short time ago were their enemies and in some cases still are. There is a lot of logistics, planning, designing, manufacturing, and training involved in fighting a war to gain your freedom and the right to live. You'll find yourself routing for Jack, Sara, Amanda, Derek, Lisa, Regex, David, and Tina just to name a few as they take the fight to those who want to take control for the Confederation space for themselves. I really enjoyed this book and series and hope you will too.

This book is awful. It is the very definition of filler. I am almost out of patience with this series. It's a good thing that they have announced that book 16 will be the end. I am going to try to struggle it out. NOTHING HAPPENS in this book. I think you could take all 12 of the books and have a really solid 5 book series, as it stands they are just milking it for sales I guess. The previous book was better but now every other novel in this series is just a waist of life.

Fun adventure

As the story winds down to its conclusion while ranking up to its climax, we have a bunch of fun character moments and more epic battles with aliens and the traitor humans of the Poseidon Group.

This is a very interesting story that has to be getting close to the end. But, what is the end? I’m not sure after this book. Admiral Jack Romanoff is building a new Confederation Navy along with his father, Grand Admiral Romanoff. They are anticipating a few more battleships like the *Hunter* to be ready very soon. Meanwhile, Admiral Jack Romanoff is in the Vesuvius system scouting the area and assessing the best way to remove the alien Novarites from the planet. He realizes that with only one ship, even if it’s a battleship, he doesn’t have enough to defeat the Novarites without serious damage to his small fleet. So, he’s decided to head back to Argent and see if the second battleship commanded by Vice Admiral MacKinnon is ready to go to war.

At Argent, they get ready to do a lot of work on the *Hunter* that will be duplicated on the *Scorpius* and the *Aries* that are in orbit around Argent. These changes mainly have to do with establishing a separation between the Captain of the battleship with a Command Bridge and the Fleet Admiral and his Flag Bridge. This will be something new to Admiral Jack Romanoff, but he’s designated Vice Admiral Amanda Harris as his Captain in training until she transfers to her own battleship. He has already assigned Vice Admiral Derek Calvo to be Captain of the *Aries* and he will be leaving the *Hunter* very soon. The *Scorpius*and the *Aries* will both under go the same construction changes as the *Hunter* but they have some time to get things done.

One thing about what happens in this book is that they have meetings on every single thing they do. Their planning is very meticulous and seems to be done in almost real time. While this story has some interesting military activities, there’s actually very little fighting. Admiral Romanoff wants to capture another spy ship from the Kingdom that’s hanging around the Leaping Deer system, so he tells Lisa Gane, David and Tina Chen of his desires, and they make it happen in very short order. Some of the technology that Lisa has developed using the information Patrick had giver her is quite advanced and remarkable. It seems they have something that can stealthily defeat just about any ship if they so desired.

But, back to the Novarites on Vesuvius. These very militaristic aliens are killing as many humans as possible on the planet. Romanoff did manage to strike at their capital city where he believes a large portion of the Novarite leadership resided so at least that has been done. If he brings back the *Scorpius* and two squadrons of Cruisers plus all the Marines they can get their hands on, they might be able to defeat the Novarites totally. But that’s a lot of assets he has to arrange for and transport to Vesuvius. So, plans are made and more meetings are scheduled to make sure their plans will work. Everyone gets involved and everything is getting included so that means a lot of this story is just talking about what and when they are going to do something.

Then there’s the problem of the Novarites and Tardans already captured and located on Leaping Deer. While the Tardans are not the aggressors since their military faction has been dealt with, there are a lot of them. Jack Romanoff has identified a planet to which they will all be resettled, but that can’t happen until they fix their colony ships in orbit over Leaping Deer. Meanwhile, the Novarites are being very obstinate with everything. They believe they are superior to humans and do not like to be told what to do even though they are prisoner. Vice Admiral Sara Nastasi has the unfortunate job of getting these to aliens entities to work to get done what needs to be done. It’s going to take a lot of time.

Later in the book, we’ll run across some actual Navy Cruisers belonging to the Poseidon Group that suddenly appear in the Leaping Deer system. There are three of them and they seem to have come to see what Admiral Jack Romanoff and his Navy are up to. They are soon captured and all of their personnel are imprisoned aboard the Hunter. Romanoff assembles his Vice Admirals and they conduct a military tribunal. This Tribunal convicts every one of the Posiden Group Naval personnel of treason with the penalty of death. Of course none of the senior Captains of the captured Cruisers believe they will actually be killed, but sitting on that Tribunal is Vice Admiral Amanda Harris, and she is known as the “goddess of death. She very clearly demonstrates why she has that nickname.

Lastly, we’re thrown into a completely different ending to this book than expected. All those plans they were previously made are thrown out the window when Admiral Romanoff and his accompanying fleet are faced with fighting the Locust who they thought were all defeated!

The story will continue in book 13, “No Retreat, now available for pre-orders on Amazon. Its release date is scheduled for 24 March 2024.

Implacable Resolve is the 12th book in the Last Hunter series by JN Chaney and Terry Mixon. We see many of our favorite characters in this installment, and it’s a lot of fun.
The story begins in the Vesuvius system, where we discovered in Book 11 that we were going to need more firepower and some troops to liberate the system. Admiral Jack Romanoff decides to return to Argent. He figured it would take at least a month to make the round trip, and meanwhile the Novarites were killing the humans on Vesuvius in car lots. He resolved to stop by Leaping Deer on the way back and to attempt to capture another Kastalaran spy ship.
Most of the time at Argent was spent planning how they would scale up the training for the new battleship crews as they came on line. Derek is now in command of the 3rd one, and Amanda and most of the crew for her command of the 4th one are training on Hunter so they are packed to the gills and hot-bunking.
There is also a lot of time spent at Argent talking about creating a flag bridge, flag officers quarters and briefing rooms, and how to handle fighter squadrons that will need to be on the battleships. They also needed to build out a Confederation Intelligence section in each battleship. Whew!
At Leaping Deer, there are Novarites and Tardans to deal with. Both groups have civilians and military, but there are no Tardan military left in Leaping Deer the civilians judged and punished them. The Novarites have both military and a Leadership caste that must be separated from the civilians.
As if that wasn’t enough to slow down the liberation of Vesuvius, while at Leaping Deer a few Confederation Cruisers show up. The confederation were being teed up for liberation after Vesuvius. It’s not easy saving the human race.
Capturing the confederation cruisers gave them information about a set of portal gates that they could use to stop the confederation from infiltrating the cluster. Jack Romanoff decided to go blow that gate, perhaps after cleaning out any confederation ships around it.
Before blowing the gate and going to Vesuvius, he decided to go through the gate to confederation space. At that point, there was a surprise plot twist that may change all of Jack’s plans for the Novarites, the Tardans, the Kastalarans, the Navy, the cluster, and the human race.
On the whole, the book set the stage for what must come next. It had a lot more planning and talking than action. I expect that investment will see a change in the ratio of action to talking in the next book or two.

Jack and crew craziness continue

I really like this series. This was another really good storyline. The Poseidon group is up to something. No news from Patrick. Lisa is coming into her own as an intelligence agent & all of Patrick’s gifts are really making a difference but it’s her additional technology and creativeness that really makes the difference in the ultimate projects. When I say changes are being made to Hunter (& all the battleships), I cannot enough come close to expressing the totality of them. Wow! I do wonder though if in the long run, the battleships exterior strength will be weakened or some areas more vulnerable. The Tarden warriors on Deer have all been executed by the Tarden judiciary. I think we’ll see more of the Tarden civilians in the future. I’m hoping Briggs will be a frequent cool character. Tardens still working to fix their ships for the move to new Copenhagen. The Novarite prisoners on Deer seem to be up to something. I think the decision on the murdering, empiristic, arrogant, power seeking novarite leaders and warriors deserve the same outcome as the Tarden warriors but will that happen? What Jack and crew find at the last novarite held human planet is a surprise. In fact, there’s multiple surprises, ranging from “OMG! to “oh crap! to “okay, we can make this work, to “WTH? And just when Jack and crew think maybe things are finally going their way,…BOOM! There’s one heck of a surprise and intense cliffhanger!
Here’s a question for anyone reading reviews:
If you were doing a job for years, have a lot of experience, and you’re very good at your job. You’ve had another person, who’s been working under you and learning. Now the company is creating your same job (position) for other Admirals and wants to hire that person to do what you do. In their new position they will have the same responsibilities as you. Should they be given the same salary you are currently making? Btw-you will now get a new person (or 2 or3) to teach so that, once ready, they can also then be transferred to do your same job for other Admirals.
I bet this question would get different answers. I wonder whether the answers would be different yet, common to each other on a generation graph? Would be interesting for authors to place on their Facebook pages for comments/discussion 😉

Outstanding

Chaney and Mixon just keep you guessing as they prosecute battles on multiple fronts in various systems. Now Admiral Romanoff has finally gotten close to have one or two more battleships coming on line. Simple? No! The war with two different alien forces, a coup that crippled the Confederation as well as splitting it in two has drained resources! Finding qualified personnel and/or training them takes time they don’t have! They will have to get creative! So Admiral Romanoff and crews have to protect the world where the new seat of government resides, find more resources to eradicate an alien held human world., deal with the other aliens military structure, and free the other part of the Confederation that has been taken over by a coup. Did I leave anything out? Oh ya! There is another far away cluster of humans that were unknown to the Confederation that are very warrior like that may be more advanced in some areas that will have to be dealt with at a later time! Trust me! You don’t get bored reading these books!

Preparations for reclaiming Vesuvius

This novel details the preparations for reclaiming Vesuvius from the Novarites. Amanda and Derek are being groomed to be Captains of their own ships once they come on line and Jack is also to get his own flag staff and so the Hunter is being refitted to accommodate twice the crew so that a 2nd crew can be trained. Since it is mainly about the preparation, there is not much action , except for a fight for power amongst the Novarites and a surprise incursion by the Poseidon Group....
This novel deals with the machinations behind the war, describing relationships and strategic manoeuvres before battle will commence and so action is relatively limited. It is however, a crucial step between one battle and the next - even if the next battle may not the one it was planned to be!

I really enjoyed the previous book Under Siege and this one starts in the same vein. However by a third of the way through I was beginning to lose a little interest and approaching halfway I was getting worried, as the story seemed to be mainly numerous meetings and discussions about rebuilding parts of the battleship.

The second half of the book was more interesting until the last chapter, when it all fell apart. It’s partly my own fault as I keep forgetting that these authors are really ’pulp fiction writers and keep recycling ideas and plots, but I really didn’t expect this ending. This seemed like a way to just pad out the story so they can produce a few more books without having to come up with any new ideas.

Superb plot development. Jack Romanoff and his crew dealt severe damage to the Novarites in the Vesuvius system, but they need more firepower to displace the invaders entirely. Furthermore, they discovered at the end of the previous installment that the Kingdom of Kastelara has more spies in the Cluster. Much of this book focuses on tying up loose ends in preparation for an invasion of Vesuvius now with two battleships. But Mixon and Chaney came up with a compelling plot twist to revive the excitement of battles from the beginning of the series... Worth a read for whatever book comes next!

This books is back to what has been the norm for most of the books in this series after a bit of a dip with the previous book. That is around four out of five stars.

The story with its many different threads, Tardans, Novarites, Confederation traitors etc. etc. continues to progress. Personally, I honestly thinks there are a tad too many threads going on but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless.

I do like that they are finally getting a number of the battleships ready for action and I definitely like the parts where Jack & Co puts the captured Novarite military leadership in their place. That’s the way to deal with fanatical enemies whether they are external or domestic.

Again there are a lot of planning and preparations going on in between the actual action. The latter which is good as usual.

All the known characters are there. Luckily the author has not gone lazy R.R. Martin on us and killed off a couple of the characters we root for in each book.

Well, there’s not much more to say that I have not said before. It is a good, not quite five star though, military science fiction and space opera book.

However, this is the 12th book in the series and I feel like it is time for the author to get somewhere with at least one of these threads. Otherwise I fear this series will suffer the fate of too many book series and will outstay its welcome.

You’re not wrong - they say that a LOT

This is still an enjoyable series after 12 books. The action and characters are fun. BUT - Things are always a little too easy. Every project the engineers or construction crews work on takes less than two weeks. My biggest peeve in this book - in the first two-thirds of the book, someone says a variation of “you’re not wrong every few paragraphs. For the love of Pete, mix it up a little! Try “you’re right or “there’s some truth in that or anything else. Please.

Never ending story

Just when it looks like things are starting to become simple, the end of the book throws in a curve ball, that makes the storyline significantly longer
It's ok for a series to end, this just feels like an opportunity to drag things out even longer. Hope that's not the case

Just when I thought I had the conflicts figured out

Have been reading this series almost nonstop for over a month, having gotten hooked on the story line. Especially like the authors shifting chapters to different characters and their viewpoints. Definitely looking forward to how this series develops, hopefully it doesn't become too convoluted as some others in Kindledid.

I think these stories are written with AI.

There are sections of this book that were poorly edited, with repetition of words or phrases in some paragraphs. I think the author just gives the AI a paragraph topic, and links them all together. How else could they deliver so much content so quickly?
Thoughts? Prove me wrong.

More twists and turns. War is hell.

Just as our heroes begin to get a handle on the invasions in the cluster, new problems emerge.

As they train new staff for the battleships and integrate new technology, other pieces of the puzzle slip. Stay tuned for the resolution of this cliffhanger.

From crisis to crisis

Sara continues to make the best efforts she can to find a way to at least work with the Novarite military and nobility. Several of Admiral Jack Romanoff’s crew have been Brevet promoted to key positions and are working hard to justify the faith placed upon them.

Great Book

I had worried this series was getting a little repetitive, but I'm happy to say it's not the case. I do wish the space battles were more detailed like the earlier books, but they are still fun, and I anxiously await each one.

Why this path, what is the reason for this divergence

I've read and bought every book in this series. Relishing in your story telling ability, your cohesive flow. This one feels jumped around, no real flow. This is the first time I regret your writing.
