This book, HOLINESS, TRUTH AND THE PRESENCE OF GOD, is not a book for everyone. It is for those who are unsatisfied with their progress and willing to do something about it. It is for every saint who feels he cannot exist unless he finds the fullness of God.

This book deals with the issue of sanctification and becoming holy (set apart for God). It deals with the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives as He draws us closer to holiness...
"In our desire to know God, we must discern this about the Almighty: He resists the proud, but His grace is drawn to the humble....At some phase in each of our lives, we all will be confronted with the impurities of our hearts. The Holy Spirit reveals our sinfulness, not to condemn us but to establish humility and deepen the knowledge of our personal need for grace. It is at this crossroad that both holy men and hypocrites are bred. Those who become holy see their need and fall prostrate before God for deliverance. those who become hypocrites are they who in seeing their sin, excuse it and thus remain intact".
"Therefore, sanctification starts not with rules, but the forsaking of pride"
"If we are honestly pursuing our sanctification, we will soon discover we have not time for judging other. Indeed, being in need of mercy, we will seek eagerly for opportunities to be merciful to others" (This idea is very similar to the writing of Bernard of Clairvaux's work, "on humility and pride")
Frangipane talks about the process itself, seeking in prayer, being diligent and not giving up until we see the Glory of God. He deals with Hebrews - and does a really nice job explaining the old earthy tabernacle and now the new spiritual tabernacle and what Christ has done to make it possible for our souls to be a spiritual dwelling place for God.
An interesting thought, he talks about once we succeed and God with Christ lives in us, what must we look like in the spiritual realm. "We know how we appear to other men, but if God truly is within us, how do we appear to angels or devils? What light marks us in the spirit world, what illumination surrounds us. what glory declares to the invisible realm, 'behold and beware, here walks a son of God'? Think of it: the Spirit of the Creator, who purposed in the beginning to make man in His image, is in you....now".
I really like the way he ends the book.
"Our goal is to seek and to find the holiness that leads us into the true presence of God. Let us also bear in minkd that the Lord dwells in a secret place. No book, no teacher, no individual can discover for us what God's love demands we find for ourselves. if we know that we should seek God, we are debtors to our knowledge until we find Him".
"Finally, simply do what you know to do. If you stumble, get up. If you sin, repent. Whatever you do, in spite of your feelings, do not lose your vision of Christlikeness. Your vision is your surest hope. Guard it. If you are faithful to your goal of Christlikeness, God will give you the grace to live in His presence. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed, you also will be revealed with Him in glory" (Col. 3:3-4).
One of the most beautiful, impacting, heart transforming pieces of literature I've ever read. Forget about how to, prayer methods, study tips, improve your fellowship advice. This book brings you into the very presence of God, showing you His holiness as if it were right there in front of you waiting to be grasped.
After reading this, I long for the holiness and presence of my Lord more than ever. A must, must read...
This is a really good book. Better than other, newer books by Frangipane.
Was a solid four stars until chapters 20 and 21. Then his imagination and enthusiasm seems to have gotten the better of him. There's a good message in those chapters, the reader just has to be aware of the creative stuff.
He also mis-attributes Thomas Acquinas' famous "It's all straw" quote to Augustine of Hippo.
Holiness, Truth and the Presence of God begins with the encouragement to think of it as going on a journey, where we leave self-righteousness and pride behind and travel the journey of truth and humility to a place of holiness. However, I found the book to be more like a series of day trips and often it felt like a random collection of thoughts or sermons on the topic of holiness. Not that these day trips were unpleasant or unfruitful, just that the book seemed to lack an overall flow.
Nevertheless, Francis Frangipane, does share some very good insights and I’ll share some that were most meaningful to me:
Holiness is the product of grace and God gives grace to the humble. Our hunger for God’s glory will cause us to forsake man’s praise. Seek God more for himself than for an experience. Be prepared to leave the camp of familiarity. Truth without grace is only half true. Holiness requires Old Testament awe and New Testament grace. Holiness precedes power, God empowers what he makes holy. A holy life is a powerful life. Even if we cannot fully obey the Word, we keep it as a promise that God will fulfil in our lives. Pray for holiness, pursue sanctification. Spiritual growth starts with repentance. We become holy when we are conformed to his image. God seeks our worship. It was always the people’s task to tear down their idols, not God’s. Holiness exists in a soul without idols. In seeking holiness, we seek to surround ourselves with the joy of heaven. Holiness means “set apart to be bright, clean, new, fresh, untarnished. Holiness comes from the presence of God. Jesus was the holiest person who ever lived. Before we can abandon the love of sin, we must meet the love of Jesus. Let people see Jesus in you before you testify. A holy life is a life of love. Knowing God’s ways leads to rest. God makes us holy. Nathanael’s honest heart, free from self-deception, led to an open vision. We are called to become a holy bride.
Overall, a worthwhile but a somewhat disjointed read.
I loved this book deeply. The chapters are short and you can chew on them and slowly work through this great work. Holiness, a topic I needed in my life but never wanted to study, due to it being hard! But Francis helps us see ourselves in Christ, and paints a picture for what holiness will provide in our lives. It is worth it for the intimacy we can have with God. Pick this book up!
I have been reading this author’s books and each time I embrace the simplicity of what we need to give up in order to reach an intimate relationship with our Savior. Danni
Humility, Purity, Holiness, and Christ-likeness... these are the topics of focus in Francis Frangipane's book. The author offers revelations from his close study of the Bible as well as his close relationship with God to encourage others to persist and pursue the God of Love. Radical.
This book is nothing less than a masterpiece! Frangipane has such a revelation of Christ-likeness. His work is always inspiring, profound, piercing and challenging. Like the subtitle says, "if you're unsatisfied and willing" this is the book for you!
A MUST READ. Convicting and biblically based. This book does a great job and continuing to convict me of my inability and sinfulness. It motivates me to read the Bible more and to seek out holiness. An amazing read and I would recommend reading it and discussing it with others.
I heard that this book was a FAVOURITE - so I searched and picked one up second hand. Why oh why it was a second hand book and not a keeper is beyond me. I’ve underlined and / or highlighted so many pages. It’s is certainly my new and all time favourite and a keeper
As Christians, our desire should be to grow closer to God. Yet we become busy with life and sometimes put our relationship with God on the backburner. Frangipane’s book is about making the decision to put forth the effort that relationship requires. He talks about maturity in God and how we acquire it when we start seeking God without an agenda. “Yet here we are not seeking God for things or even for other people. We are seeking God for Himself. Maturity starts as we break the cycle of seeking God only during hardships; holiness begins the moment we seek God for Himself.
I enjoyed this book and one point he makes is something I find myself refusing to give in to. It’s the idea of being content with fake Christianity. “Know for certain that the moment we stop obeying God, we start faking Christianity. No human relationship will survive if we don’t invest our time and energy into it and the same is even truer of our relationship with God. Frangipane makes many good points, reminding me of things I’ve grown up hearing but needed to have them brought to my attention once more. I liked that it was a quick read definitely one I’ll pick back up and read again.
I found this book while helping a friend clean up after a tornado took her house. It is POWERFUL, as if you are in the very presence of God! I could only read on chapter at a time before I had to go to my knees. It was indeed life changing. So if you want more from your spiritual life, read this one!
This is my all time favorite book of Francis Frangipane. There is so much truth to glean in this book. I have probably read this book about three times and I still glean from it. I would recomend this book to anyone who is serious about their hunger for God because you will not be disappointed. challanged? yes disappointed? no.
Frangipane's message and writing require chewing. I found myself wanting to read the book but shrinking back from it simultaneously: it's a tough read. But it's also more than worthwhile. My copy is dog-eared and highlighted to bits. Highly recommended for the man or woman who wants to give more; who comes to the cross no longer only to receive but to make daily sacrifices.
I'm really looking forward to this book! My spiritual journey has took a few blows recently and I'm excited for something to lift me up and bring me back closer to God! I've had a few bad things going on. Hopefully this book will be a blessing in my life!
This is my second time reading through this gem. I reccomend it to everyone. New things highlighted and jumped out at me this time from the first time I read it a few years ago. I am so thankful I picked this up again this summer. So much spoke so powerfully to me in this season.
Resonated with me- Difficult concepts explained in simple words. Worth the whole book just for the concept of Christ in us in Chapter 19. Must re-read to grasp the idea of Mary as a body prepared and the church as a virgin bride.
A Great Book! This book is life changing if you are truly seeking a relationship with God!I am so thankful I had the opportunity to know about this book, and read it now.Perfect timing and so powerful ... in this season/journey of my life!!!
