I enjoyed this book for what it was, a trip down memory lane! I used to love this series as a pre-teen and I've been re-reading the whole series since I found the books in storage. Being an adult, they aren't as epic as they seemed at that age, but they are definitely entertaining and quick little reads too. Very interesting storyline and characters!

These are going between 3 and 4 stars for me. They are pretty simply written and don't always have a lot of action. This one did have some action throughout and a pretty good mystery, so it's one of the better ones so far.
This is the first one that focuses on Jimena, and it was kinda interesting getting to see her through a different lens. She is still kinda the cliché gang girl, but... This series also touches on some difficult subjects, like death, gangs, drugs and cults with the Atrox Followers. It would be a good series to open up a discussion about any of that.
I remember being totally enthralled by this series when I found it back in high school, and I bought them all but only really skimmed the first three. I just liked the ending 5 or so chapters, where they described the clothes the girls wore to their fight and the fight itself.
The fights are kinda anticlimactic overall. There is never any real danger, or so it seams. High scholars would like this more, I would say.

I really had high hopes for this book, as well as the ones in the rest of the series. Unfortunately, I made it about half way through this one and just couldn't finish. The premise of the stories is interesting and engaging, but the constant reminder (and word-for-word reminders) of what happened in the past really started to bother me. I understand why the books jump from character to character, but I found that it wasn't holding my attention as well. I just didn't think the story was really going anywhere...

I really enjoyed this book because Jimena is featured in this book more and I really like this character. Jimena is a goddess/daughter of the moon. Her true love, Veto, died a year ago, but he suddenly comes back to life. Later in the book we find out that the Atrox animated Veto so that he could manipulate Jimena for her to join the Atrox.

Lets make the last review of 2019 a good one.
So... the third book in the 'Daughters of the Moon' series. Quite possibly the weirdest books I've ever read. I wish I enjoyed it because this would be a funny book to hold onto.
We're following Jimena, the girl who gets premonitions and can see into the future. Her dead boyfriend Veto has found her and she knows that something bad is going to happen because Cassandra, her old nemesis, and Atrox, the big bad evil, are working together. Que the battle scenes!
We have this interesting thing before EVERY SINGLE BATTLE where Jimena and her friends coat themselves in glitter and paint flames, waves, heart and other dumb things on their legs. They also always wear 'impossibly high heels' and 'short dresses that reveal their legs'... because those are perfect for battling the one and only great evil Atrox.
Jimena also comes from a gang background and in this book she's always talking in Mexican or something, saying "My chicos" and other random things like that. She will protect her 'homegirls' who she jacked cars with. She broke lots of laws and got sent to a camp many times for correction but the last time she did it, the judge saw something in her eyes and knew she would never jack cars again so she gave her community work at the hospital. Now she walks through enemy territory to get to her grandmas house but she doesn't have to worry because she has a really good reputation among the gangs and they all respect her.
She literally walks past a huge enemy gang group and they all stare at her in fear and awe. Like... attack her. She can't beat all of you. I know for a fact that she's acting for half of it.
UGH
Oh, one last things. The earth thunder is splitting the earth and opening a door to Tartarus. Veto falls into Tartarus, which is where he belongs because he's dead, but Jimena jumps down and drags him out. They, like, scale a cliff and just pop up in the park... out of Tartarus... where an angry spirit was chasing them.
My Percy Jackson heart was crying at the bad Greek mythology used in these first three books.
I'm done with this series. Lynn Ewing has a fun writing style and I would love to read more from her but I can't read any of the stuff she has out right now because it's all like this except with different characters. I'm proud of myself for finishing the third book in this... wait for it... THIRTEEN BOOK SERIES. I want to talk to someone who read it all to make sure they're sane. Then again, this does perfectly sum up the mood of the 2000's.

CHECKED OUT THE BOOK FROM MY PUBLIC LIBRARY.

APART OF THE GOODREADS 2011 READING CHALLENGE.

2ND REVIEW. 1ST REVIEW IS .

Review/Rating:

3 out of 5

Once a gang member, Jimena changed her tone after learning her destiny as a Daughter of the Moon. She is not afraid of anything, but when her deceased boyfriend, Veto, shows up again from the dead, Jimena is afraid what kind of bargain he has made with the Atrox that could cost them their lives.

I decided to do a better review of the Daughters of the Moon series by Lynne Ewing since my first ones weren’t done very well. This book is really a fast read, but since I really didn’t like this one, it took longer than the other two books.

In the third book of the Daughters of the Moon series, it explores the legend behind the goddess, Diana. It really isn’t as interesting as the other two mythology information, so meh.

The tone and dialogue reminds me a lot of my teenage years and my high school, so the author did a really good job at writing the book in teenage words and their world. The descriptions were also very well done, and both of these things made the book go a little bit faster than most other young adult books. So, I really like this book from this stand point. Another thing I liked about this book is the mythology that is incorporated in it. Also, the character growth and their personalities are believable (for a supernatural book). Despite the descriptions, there is very little growth, and it is not as interesting as the first two books. However, it’s better than most books that have a series. :( As the books/series goes on, you get more information about the Daughters of the Moon and the Atrox, which is good because it won’t overload you with information with just one book. Third book is still pretty good, so good read it. :) I’ll be reading the next book after I read a picture book.

Any more information would spoil the books. :P

This book was interesting. I realized that a lot of the gang references went right over my head when I read it the first time. Now that I'm older and have learned about those things, some parts of the book didn't make sense. Like how she left her gang but they still liked her. Usually it's pretty hard to get out of a gang.

Jimena is a tough girl who can take care of herself. She is very street smart. I felt that she handled Veto's reappearance odd. It really didn't seem that shocking for her.

Also, I am getting a little frustrated with how much detail is going into clothing descriptions again. I have no idea how this didn't annoy me when I was younger. Also, the four friends all get together to meet up, and they get food or something, then they leave super fast. If I was going to make a plan to hang out with my friends, I wouldn't leave after five minutes.

I still love the Greek mythology references. I did like Jimena's journey into Tartarus, but again the whole thing seemed way to fast and easy. I also am not a big fan of live people and dead people getting together. It just weirds me out.

Speaking of weirdness, the relationship between Serena and Stanton?? He's like a bazilion years old but it's ok to be with a 16 year old girl because he looks like a teenager? It's like Twilight. That's gross. Creepy old men.

That was a lot better than I remembered. I don’t think I liked Jimena that much as a kid, but I can appreciate her more as an adult. She’s reformed from gang life, so she has a ‘jaguar side. I think she is the most loyal and intense out of the goddesses. I like that the series brings in various incarnations of ancient moon goddesses in modern forms. Last time it was Hekate, this time it was Diana. Also incorporated Tartarus and the boatman and the three headed dog of the Underworld. The amount of glitter the girls incorporate in their makeup and skin definitely centers the series in the early 2000s 😉

If all of the repeated/redundant information (like which girl has which power) were removed, each story would end up being only a few chapters. All of the books up to this point would have made a single really good book. It took me less than 2.5 hours to read. The other major problem I had with this book, is that while it mainly focuses on Jimena, it seems that the romantic relationships the other Daughters are having are taking major turns. I feel jipped in not knowing more details about what's going on. Well, onto #4.

I have to admit, It's getting kinda boring and repetitive for me.Each book seems to focus on one of the girls and the so called battle is always so lame and uneventful. Interesting ideas but not really going places with me. Very young girls would like this series more perhaps

Still 3.5 stars but I almost did 3 for this one. Nothing to do with Jimena, so the story on this one. Honestly, it was more so because I have a hard time understanding the half English, half Spanish thing. And that has everything to do with me trying to figure out what is being said in Spanish, as I only know like 10 words LOL. I also got super annoyed with her "tough girl" attitude.

Possibly spoilers ahead I think...

I didn't like the Veto thing really. I mean, I understood it, I get why they did it, but it kind of hurt to read. I just...I felt for Jimena. And I didn't want her to hurt. I didn't want anything to get between her and Collin, who I just LOVED together. I liked everything about them. So yeah, I didn't really like it. Doesn't mean I didn't think it added to the story, I just didn't like it. I did LOVE watching Cassandra get her's at the end. Watching her fail is fantastic. Also, sad to see Morgan switch over, but also, she's a bitch, so I'm not truly sad to see her go to the dark side.

One of my favorite things about doing buddy reads with ACOFAE cohost ACOFAELaura (/acofaelaura) is that she exposes me to books that I never would have considered prior to our weekly discussions. The Daughters of the Moon series is a perfect example. We even discuss it more on ACOFAE Podcast episode dedicated to books #3 and #4.

Podcast episode:

With books 3 and 4, nothing ever truly goes out of style. Time is a flat circle. Friends don't know everything about each other. Boys can suck. These are the four life lessons that we, the readers, learn in books 3-4 of the Daughters of the Moon series. Jimena and Catty take the lead in their respective books and learn about themselves, adjust their priorities, and gain a bit more knowledge about the future and the Choice that must be made. Lovers back from the dead and a secret prophecy make for fast-paced action, while the plot solidifies into something much bigger than we ever anticipated. Tartarus in LA? Nothing ever truly goes out of style.

Like the other books, this was good, a bit more grittier than its predecessors. This book dives into Jimena's world and confronting her past about Veto. It uses a ton of Spanish terms which made this perspective truly Jimena's and no one else's which was pretty cool.

Though my only caveat is when the book plot holes itself saying that Felt like this was way too indecisive what Ewing was going for and could have been revised easily in the 3rd draft.

All in all, still a great book and can't wait to read the next one!

The actual Review is a 3.5 star, again this is a re-read or maybe I skipped this one because I remember very little of it, so I'm not sure if I read it before. It is still very childish writing, not meant for a 32-year-old, but I love the nostalgia and going back to finish the Daughters of the Moon story. Jimena by far is the coolest of them all, so it was nice to read a story on her POV. I found the Spanish words randomly thrown around felt odd at times, like they felt forced to make you understand the character is of Mexican descent, but I think it was unnecessary. An amazing addition to the story.

Average writing. Good enough story and idea. I've determined this series is and will continue to be a solid 3 across the mark with nostalgia and the reading consideration being between 10 to maybe 13 or 14 years old. However, it's debatable if I'd want my own spawn to eventually read the series because of the boyfriend obsessions (which, although relatively accurate for teenagers, not the influence I would particularly want on my kiddos). But if this gets someone to read, then it does and that is wonderful enough.

Jimena a teenager lives in LA with her friends; Vanessa, Catty, Serena, Tianna and their mentor Maggie. She lost the love of her life in a gang related incident 1 year prior to the events in the book. He comes back to life and his romance with Jimena is rekindled in The Daughters of the Moon book #3. This story is one of tragedy and love. I almost cried while reading it!

I have always loved Jimena!

Yes, the writing leans cheesy and doesn't age well but the books are so easy to read. Seeing more of Jimena and her vulnerable side was nice to see again. I'm glad she got a little closure. ♥️
