A fine if predictable ending to Phillip otherwise great run. I felt these last 3 issues didn't live up to the rest of the series, which is a shame. However, Phillip got Superman so right, and his family, even if the plot itself and villain were just okay. Loved the last few pages and overall really enjoy Superman's entire family, I hope they get a lot more love.
I haven't really cared for PKJ’s run at all, but that was easily the best issue of his so far. Which is kind of a shame it's the end of him on Superman especially after seeing what's coming next. (Who the f starts a Superman run with Bizzaro?!)
I thought Annuals were a collection of stories. This wasn't that. It wasn't even a one-off. It was another part of a story I hadn't read and so I just ended up confused for most of it. Plus, the whole super family is extremely boring to me, I prefer when there are only a few "super" people.
This was a great issue but I mostly want to show some appreciation for Phillip Kennedy Johnson who has had an incredible run on Action Comics. It’s gonna be tough to follow him up on this one.
In an ideal situation this would be the review for the New World collection, whenever DC Comics has the sense to release the collection. With this being Johnson's last Superman story, for awhile as he is leaving Action Comics, the best thing I can say to any reader is the following-
Read his stuff. I first encountered his writing on The Last God, the type of fantasy that usually turns me off. He held me for the entire series. I thought he made an error introducing some fantasy/quest like tropes early on in his Action run.
I was wrong.
When we get to New Worlds Johnson has successfully made Metropolis a character in the story, much the same way James Robinson did with Opal City in Starman. The city has become a home to alien refugees, which had led to conflict in the city.
You see this organization, Blue Earth has formed which wants an alien free world, and is promoting fear against the other. Sound familiar? If you've studied any 20th century history you know fascists have used fear of the plenty of times to bully their way into power.
Oh, yeah BTW Republican Party you're pretty much just the same as the Blue Earthers. Your fear of facts and the other ring throughout this story.
The politics is there, for me I didn't feel like I was being hit over the head by it.
Each member of the now expanded Superman family gets their own character piece. The pacing might feel a little slow for some.
Politics, belief in that we can all be better, especially if we face our faults about ourselves?
For me this made for good read, even the Hallmark movie moments in the last chapter.
I loved the run. But after Warworld and the return on earth, many story lines were started with the extended Super-family including Steel, and I feel none has really developed to a proper ending. The Warworld refugees are moved to a very convenient secret city so that we can forget about them (is the Dreamer origin explained in any comics? We saw the character in Lazarus Planet but it was the first time I read a sort of back-sotry). I will be mad if we do not see the kids in the next run. Not a fan of Bizarro so I am moderately excited for the next "yearlong Superman Superstars initiative".
Hatred will not sustain you past your initial victory. Soon it will disappear as people stand up to it and forge a path of respect and compassion. Superman’s family brought that strength to the fight and took down Al Ghul. She’ll be back, but never as strong.
Hands down one of the better issues. I think because it wasn't 4 different stories or anything, it was just one. I think genuinely it's better when there's some focus. And there's more time to tell a little more of the story.
