If she can remove the monster’s mask, she will earn her freedom…but failure will cost her life.
Thirteen years ago, Princess Fiona fled the bloodshed within Ravenwood Castle. She has no desire to return to the place of her childhood nightmares, especially not as a prisoner locked in chains. Using the power of illusion, she glamours her appearance to conceal her royal identity, hoping that her facade won’t crumble before she can escape.
When the usurper king forces her on a deadly mission to subdue a wild man terrorizing his kingdom, Fiona must earn the trust of a masked monster who uses his sharp tongue and shifting personalities to keep her away. But the longer she’s with him, the more she sees beyond his disguise and succumbs to his charms.
With her life on the line, the last thing she needs is a distraction. But when he offers her another path to freedom, will she sacrifice everything for him?
Mask of Deception and Sacrifice is book 3 in the Sacrificed Hearts multi-author series, a collection of stand-alone fantasy romances inspired by monsters of legend and packed with strong heroines, swoony heroes, and sacrificial themes.
Callie Thomas is an indie author who loves all things fairy tales—including twisting tales of her own. Her favorite stories have a mix of sweet romance, laughter, and a pinch of magic. When she's not writing, she enjoys playing board games, reading at the beach, and traveling the world with her husband and two boys. Since she can't live at Disney World, you'll find her near the historical battlefields and lush woodlands where her family lives in Fredericksburg, VA. She recently published her first Vella series,A Forest of Stolen Memories&A Sea of Golden Chains, and has more stories on the horizon.
…this girl is being Stockholm Syndrome’d by Jekyll and Hyde. I’m concerned. And my concern just continued to grow every chapter. She starts to fall for him at the slightly bit of kindness (probably do her that being the only kindness she’s seen in a while), but I’m sorry? He just tried to choke you, quit thinking about his lips. !!
This was honestly weird. Because of the split personality thing it just felt like she was dating and kissing two different guys. The magic system was unique and explained well, though, so I’ll give the author that.
Had the tropes “who hurt you?, the one where he literally hates everyone but her, and the trope of him getting jealous the minutes she says another guy’s name. All of these could be cute if done in a non-obsessed way where they literally don’t nearly kill the other in their first meetings before they fall in ~luv~ but in this book it felt unhealthy. If you liked 'A Thousand Heartbeats', you may be fine with this one. (I didn’t like that book either so there’s my comparison and because this has the we-are-trying to kill the other version of the enemies to lovers trope.)
All that said, I did like the ending (despite it being a bit lackluster and unrealistic as we aren't given the impression she’s been trained to be royalty??), the way the magic system worked, and the hinted faith content representing God, so I guess two stars. I don’t know. *shrug* Some readers will definitely like it more than me, but I like my relationships healthier than these two.
Looking at reviews, many others liked this book but I don't think it was for me. Very much a mix between Beauty & the Beast, Phantom of the Opera, and Doctor Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. I prefer my MMC not morally grey or...well, anything like this one. 😅
Main Content- At the beginning of the book, the author gives a warning for sensitive topics of imprisonment, emotional and physical abuse, and death of loved ones.
There’s good magic and black magic in this world and it depends on how you use it; Good magic comes from the creator of the world, Ruah, and references that Ruah is God under another name; Fiona tells the MMC about Ruah and that it’s not Ruah’s fault for the terrible things in the world because people have choices; Fiona is a Illusionist which means she can alter reality of what others see whether that’s her appearance or their surroundings; If someone uses their magic for ill gain or inappropriately there are punishments on their souls (but many people don’t know this about magic users and thus Fiona’s people have been killed because of it); Fiona creates illusions; Many mentions of magic, magical items, etc; Mentions of praying & prayers (assuming towards Ruah, but never directly said); A few mentions of the darkness whispering to Fiona and the MMC, but Fiona encourages him to be stronger than that because listening to the darkness is the coward’s way; A mention of the ghosts of Fiona’s family watching her; A mention of stars aligning.
Fighting, being strangled, being hit/slapped/knocked out, being drugged/shot with a dart, passing out, & blood/bleeding (up to semi-detailed); Seeing someone stabbed (few sentences); Fiona is locked in a prison, knocked out, hit/slapped, starved, stepped on, humiliated, manipulated, and treated terribly by those in charge, including an older man who is “training her like a pet (telling her “good girl, wanting her to follow his orders, whipping her when disobeying, etc. It’s abusive and gross, especially when we learn he’s an old guy); Fiona does lie for her safety, for the mission of tricking the monster (the MMC), and to others she doesn’t want to know the truth.
MMC is said to be a monster, but in reality has a split-personality due to something and is going crazy because of it (this includes trying to strangle Fiona and attack her); Fighting, screams, attacking, trying to survive with people trying to kill you, etc (up to semi-detailed/few sentences).
Many mentions of execution & deaths (including of loved ones and grief & Fiona being threatened with both); Mention of torture; Mentions of murders, killing, killers, etc; Mentions of lies, lying, & liars.
Language: no major language, instead words like heck, stupid, idiot, shut up, and an unfinished ‘what the?! are said; A couple mentions of others cursing but it’s not written; A few uses of the phrase “stars above and “thank the stars.
Many kisses (maybe around 20?) & wanting to kiss, typically lasting up to a handful of sentences in length but also a few that are a few paragraphs from beginning to end (they honestly feel very seductive? I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s not a normal kissing scene, a few of these kisses are hungering for the other and not able to get close enough); Many Touches, Embraces, Nearness, Noticing, & Tension (a few sentences in length); Also some cuddling in bed and being in the other’s lap; Fiona uses an illusion to hide that she’s changing clothes in front of MMC to “remove the temptation of him watching her, but when he hears things, he turns around to not looking in that direction; Fiona tells the MMC that they can be in bed together after he gets to know her (she says this after he tries a few angles to be able to be in bed with her); A mention of a mother dying in childbirth; A couple hints to a couple leaving a public area to be alone in a bedroom together.
Is this my new favorite romantasy? Umm...yes, yes it is. At least until she writes a new one! lol Zee is just perfect, but also, not perfect? haha He IS the perfect morally gray character. I LOVED him. So much.
And Fiona is a great heroine! The entire storyline is so unique, but also incorporates all your favorite things from enemies to lovers. So many Jekyll & Hyde, Beauty and the Beast, and Phantom of the Opera vibes. Goodness, I don't know how she does it. The world is completely immersive and unique, without bogging you down with too many details. The hero is swoony. The heroine is fierce and stabby. I read this in a day because I could not put it down and when I finished, I wanted to pick it back up and read it again.
Listen, do I think this was the healthiest of relationships? No. If this was a real life scenario, would I support it? No. I'd be telling this girl she's crazy for falling for this man. But I don't care, because boy was it entertaining! Z was such an intriguing character. It definitely gives beauty and the beast vibes. This book is listed under "christian/spirituality" but there's so little Christian allegory, I'm not sure it QUITE belongs in that category. Also the cover is gorgeous 😍
I feel very conflicted on this book, as there was some good things I liked but there were also some things I didn’t. It was an interesting story, and definitely held my attention, but I don’t know, I just feel like there were some things still unexplained and questions I had. The characters were alright, and the plot was interesting I liked the little bit of faith in here but wished it had been more I did really like her writing style, it immediately sucked me in and kept me riveted to the story. I think she wrote it really well and handled tough topics with grace and did it well. I also really enjoyed the music aspect
No rating since I'm in this collaboration, but I had to review!
This book was a wonderful romantasy mix of Phantom of the Opera (I LOVED finding all the Easter eggs in there since I have that musical memorized!) and Jekyll and Hyde. The MMC with a split personality was a bold move, and Zee both fascinated and terrified me. He feels very...Gollum/ Sméagol from Lord of the Rings.
The writing was beautiful and gripping, and I FELT the main character--her struggles, her fears, all of it.
I haven't read any of Callie Thomas's work before, but this book read as a standalone, so I didn't need any additional information about the world beyond what was described. Well done, Callie! This was a fantastic book!
3,5 stars Very nice book ! "Who cares about him ? "I do. Why don't you let him speak ?" "Let him ? (...) He's a useless ghost." L'histoire reprend un conte de fée. Si je ne me trompe pas, c'est un peu un remix de La Belle et la bête. Le personnage principal n'était pas chiant, avait un minimum de bon sens donc je l'ai bien aimé aussi ! Voilà, flemme de rentrer plus dans les détails.
Several author & reader friends were raving about this book, and I knew I needed to try it. This was my first time reading something by Thomas and sufficed to say, I’m hooked!
The delightful Beauty & the Beast, meets Phantom of the Opera, meets Doctor Jekyll & Mr. Hyde vibes turned out to be exactly what my reading heart needed in a book!
While the stakes weren’t quite as high as I expected, still be prepared to be swept away in this swoony romantasy tale!
Oh how I absolutely adore this book! Like it just hits all the right notes and kept me engaged from page one!
I love that this is the perfect blend of Beauty and the Beast, Jekyll and Hyde, and Phantom of the Opera. And finding the Easter eggs of Phantom of the Opera in the book was sooo fun! The soundtrack was just in my head non stop and that feeling just gave me countless goosebumps!
The MMC Zee is definitely one of my all time favorite MMCs. I love that he is morally gray, powerful, controlling, and a force to be reckoned with. But then there is that tender, caring, protective hero. And the balance of all his emotions, thoughts and presence is just everything! Just so well written and you couldn't help but want him to finally find someone who could see through his mask.
The FMC Fiona is fierce and determined. I love that she could hold her own and that she was so courageous. I love that she had so many reasons to be bitter and angry and yet continuously chose to see blessings in her life.
I absolutely loved seeing Fiona and Zee together. Their banter, chemistry and just relationship was just perfection!
If you are looking for a Romantasy that keeps you on your toes and will make you want to read it in one sitting give this one a go! Easiest 5 stars ever and I cannot wait until Callie releases another book because I'm sure she will continue to her reign as one of my all time favorite Fantasy Romance Authors!
Physical Intimacy Lvl 2 Zero Swearing Single POV (Fiona)
"Mask of Deception and Sacrifice" by Callie Thomas is a captivating blend of romance and fantasy, drawing inspiration from classics like "Phantom of the Opera" and "Jekyll and Hyde." Princess Fiona, disguised and imprisoned, must navigate treacherous paths to earn her freedom. As she embarks on a dangerous mission to subdue a wild man, she finds herself drawn to his enigmatic personality, despite the risks involved.
Thomas's writing is both beautiful and gripping, immersing readers in Fiona's struggles and fears. The story is rich with themes of love, sacrifice, and redemption, reminiscent of beloved tales such as "Beauty and the Beast." The characters are well-developed, and the world-building is immersive, creating a captivating atmosphere throughout the book.
With nods to classic literature and a unique storyline, "Mask of Deception and Sacrifice" offers a fresh take on familiar tropes. Fiona emerges as a commendable heroine, with a heart of gold and a determination to overcome adversity. Set in the enchanting world of Hanalla, this standalone novel delivers a compelling and unforgettable reading experience.
The novel's incorporation of elements from "Phantom of the Opera" and "Jekyll and Hyde" adds depth and intrigue to the plot, keeping readers guessing until the very end. Fiona's journey is filled with twists and turns, and the story captures every emotion perfectly, from suspense to romance. Additionally, the overarching theme of Ruah, present in Thomas's other works, adds an extra layer of depth to the narrative, making it a truly immersive read.
Overall, "Mask of Deception and Sacrifice" is a wonderful tale that combines classic literary inspirations with a unique and engaging storyline. With its well-written characters, immersive world-building, and rich emotional depth, this book is sure to delight fans of fantasy romance and is not to be missed!
Beautiful composition of sacrifice, strength and love
This clean re-retelling of The Phantom of the Opera is amazing. It sucks you and and holds you until the very end. Hiding her identity in order to survive Fiona shows strength while imprisoned, "Stand tall in adversity and hold steadfast to the truth amidst the lies, for courage isn't freely given but earned by facing the battle head on." I have found my new mantra to face the challenges in my life and the lies that swirl about my worth. I love this tale and I am already ready to re-read it when I need the reminder to hold fast to the truth. The way Callie takes the original tale and re-writes it to this beautiful complex story is inspiring. This tale is set in the world of her backwards fairytale series but it can absolutely be read as a stand alone, or read before reading the others. I love this tale and highly reccomend it! I received an ARC from the author but my review is honest and my own opinion.
I think this is my favorite of the series so far. I will say I wasn’t a fan of the magic aspect. But other than that I really enjoyed the writing. I felt like I couldn’t put this book down. I almost finished it in one day.
Unlike the other two it didn’t drag and I wanted to keep reading. The story felt that the inspiration might be Beauty in the Beast. It had a different take on how the curse was broke. I’m not sure if it is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast.
As of right now, this is my favorite of the series. But I do have three more books to go.
Verhaal was fun, maar wel voorspelbaar en niet ieder moment even goed geschreven dat was wel jammer. Maar een leuke twist op belle en t beest daar geniet ik wel van. Soms vond ik het een beetje langdradig oops.
Oh my word, there are not any words to begin to described how much I loved Mask of Deception and Sacrifice! It was fantastic and so hard to put down. Did I read this book in one day? Yes, yes I did. I loved how Callie created a story with Phantom of the Opera and Jekyll and Hyde inspiration. It was a creative and unique plot that had me hooked until the end! Furthermore, this book capture every emotion perfectly. Fiona is an admirable heroine. She truly had a heart of gold. Zee is a swoon worthy monster. Like her other books, this story is set in her world of Hanalla. However, this book is completely a standalone. The romance is nothing more than swoony kisses. Highly recommend this book if you love a story with a fierce heroine and a morally gray hero!
I received an ARC copy of the book and all thoughts are my own.
I was hooked from the first page, the first chapter.
I really, really admire Fiona’s dogged persistence to not let go but maintain some semblance of control where she can- herself. Her actions, thoughts, feelings, they were all she had left and she held onto them beautifully.
Not only that, but OH MY GOODNESS, Zee! I really can’t say much about him without it spoiling Fiona, and you, as the reader, getting to meet him. Suffice to say I love him and his added flavor to the dynamics of this story.
This book beautifully combines elements of Phantom of the Opera and Jekyll and Hyde in a setting that screams of Beauty and the Beast. Callie Thomas managed to pull me so thoroughly into this swoony romance that I read it all in a day. One of my favorite quotes was a “kiss me and find out moment between the characters during a rather heated discussion. I also loved the overarching theme of Ruah that is a part of Callie Thomas other books as well and how I can easily slip into her characters minds. Highly recommend this read!
Reread 1: Okay, yes, I fully recognize that Zee and Fiona's relationship probably isn't healthy and definitely did not start on the best of terms. But come onnn, who doesn't love a good "who hurt you?" MMC. And also, this book is for everyone who has ever had a moment of "I can fix him" in a relationship, because Fiona actually fixes him. Also also, that magic old lady really thought she cooked with the mask didn't she? Hmmm. Okay but actually though, And, Zee is the poster child for a stressed Enneagram Type 8. Like come on, Fiona tells him, "You push others away because deep down, you're still the same lonely child who's seeking affection but too frightened to admit it" and then he frickin THROWS A KNIFE AT SOMEONE in retaliation for that character hurting another. Like, this dude IS type 8. Alizar says, "Zee doesn't like sadness. Calls me weak. He prefers the anger." DUDE.
Original Review: Good news: I read this book in 2 1/2 hours. Bad news: Those hours happened to be 1am-3:30am.
If you couldn't guess, this book pulled me in from the beginning. I was invested and wanted to know what happened next. I connected with Fiona and wanted to get to her HAE as soon as possible. I was intrigued by Zee and wanted to learn who he is. This story takes place in the same world as the author's other series, the Backwards Fairy Tales. I am not sure where it fits in the timeline though, since it mentions the fear of Illusionists I think it takes place before the other series?
I do think that Fiona is a little delulu, but at least she acknowledges it.
I am more than halfway through the Sacrificed Hearts multi-author series of books about maidens falling in love after being sacrificed to "monsters." The third book in the series is Mask of Deception and Sacrifice by Callie Thomas. This book is a perfect blend between The Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It follows the premise of the series more closely than Pearls of Salt and Sacrifice but not quite as literally as Mountain of Dragons and Sacrifice. The story boasts a compelling romance full of drama and passion between two characters who were forced to hide their faces from the world. Its gorgeous artwork is a tribute to the drama and mystery within. This is the darkest story from this series so far, but the author provides a considerate trigger warning at the beginning of the book to prepare readers for the more disturbing parts of it.
Fiona is a lost princess from a kingdom that was conquered by prejudice against those with the ability to use illusion magic, which is revealed by their hair color. She disguises her face before she is kidnapped by the enemy so they would not recognize her as the missing princess, but her dark hair gives away her magical potential, which they use as an excuse to torture her. She is starved, beaten, and stripped of all dignity with virtually no justification outside of her ability to create illusions. When she is thrown into a room with a mysterious masked "monster" and told to make him drink an unidentified liquid, the two prisoners come to realize that they have more in common than they realized. The "monster" turns out to be a man who suffers from a magical form of dissociative identity disorder. Once she gets to know the two sides of his personality, both Zee, his violent half, and Alizar, his gentle half, develop feelings for Fiona, and she in turn cares for both of them as though they were one person.
The Phantom of the Opera influence in this book is obvious and intentional. Zee/Alizar is a musician who plays a song for Fiona inspired by "Music of the Night," and there a few direct references to the musical. The parts of the story that veer from Phantom are a little murkier. For instance, it isn't clear where the tonic that Fiona must give him came from or why the people who gave it to her believed that it would remove his mask and break the curse on him. It is not entirely explain why mask cannot be removed or how it is tied directly to the curse that splits his personality into two. Although it is later explained why Zee/Alizar was locked up and provided numerous "sacrifices" to try to remove his mask, it still feels forced, especially when they would give a prisoner as seemingly insignificant as Fiona an opportunity to take on such an important task.
The strongest element of this book by far is the love story. Fiona and Zee/Alizar complement each other perfectly. Both are torn away from affluent backgrounds to be tortured and imprisoned and forced to hide their true identities from the world. Zee/Alizar comes up with a cute nickname for Fiona and becomes determined to protect her at all costs after learning how she was treated in captivity. By the end of the book, both characters' hidden pasts collide allowing them to live out the lives they were destined for and form an alliance that culminates their deep feelings and understanding toward each other and the world around them. This is a moving story of love being used as a sanctuary from the darkness of the outside world.
Callie Thomas's Mask of Deception and Sacrifice emerges as a captivating blend of dark fantasy, forbidden romance, and gothic legends. Drawing inspiration from The Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the novel weaves a complex plot with a loose ends. The true heart of the story lies in the compelling love story between Fiona and Zee/Alizar. Their shared experiences of torture, imprisonment, and concealment of their true selves forge a powerful bond. Zee/Alizar's determination to protect Fiona, coupled with his desire to share his art with her, reveals a tenderness that blossoms amidst the darkness. Ultimately, Mask of Deception and Sacrifice transcends its gothic influences, presenting a moving testament to the power of love as a sanctuary from the world's cruelty and prejudice.
A beautiful story based on The Phantom of the Opera and Jekyll & Hyde.
When I first saw that it would be a retelling influenced by these two stories, I was a little doubtful but extremely curious about how that would turn out. But having read Callie's previous stories, I should've known it would be great!
Of course, it is a bit darker than her previous books, but it is a beautiful romantasy with great world-building and strong character development.
The MMC Zee is a unique and creatively written character. Callie proved that a "monster" inspired by Jekyll & Hyde and The Phantom can still be swoony!! He is also complicated and protective. The FMC Fiona is smart, spirited, courageous, and has a good heart.I loved her determination and positivity!
This was absolutely an enemies-to-lovers story, combined with "who did this to you" elements. I loved reading about the growing connection and chemistry Zee and Fiona had. He also has a cute nickname for her. They were truly two halves meant to find and complete each other.
If you're looking for a wonderfully written, unique romantasy with angst, action, humor, swoony moments, and things that are not what they seem, then I would absolutely recommend this book!
--------------------------------- I received an e-arc from the author. This hasn't influenced my review, it's only based on my personal opinion.
Tropes- -> Enemies to lovers -> Who hurt you? -> A mischievous gentleman..(only way to describe zee tbh) -> Forced proximity -> Hidden identities
When I tell you this book sucked me in and I physically could not put it down..I MEAN IT
The writing style....THE WRITING STYLE So beautiful & it was truly touching I mean only zee could say stuff like THAT. Every time he opened his mouth I fell in love a little.
This book is a masterpiece! Ok. That may be a bit dramatic, but I feel very strongly that this book is sheer perfection! This is the 3rd book in the Sacrificed Hearts standalone series, and it is my favorite so far. From the courageous, broken heroine to the misunderstood monster to the lovable cast of supporting characters, I was transported into this book with strong Phantom of the Opera meets Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde vibes. The story was a little dark and emotional at times (I was literally wiping tears at one point), but it was constantly enjoyable. I was completely immersed and read this book quickly. The characters felt real and raw, and their pain, joy, and triumphs were palpable on the page. And the swoony romance was on point, completely sweet and innocent while at the same time bringing those butterflies in my stomach that I want when I've been told this is a swoony romance. If I could give a 10 star review to this book, I would. It's definitely one of my favorites!
*I was fortunate to receive an ARC of Mask of Deception and Sacrifice. These views are completely my own.
Fantasy romance with a puzzle twist - who is the masked man anyway? It was fun to figure out the details as the story progressed.
I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of the story which focused on Fiona and Zee. After that, the plot shifted (not unexpectedly - but things that previously had been background/worldbuilding details now became central to the plot). The plot shift was necessary to finish Fiona & Zee's story, but things had kind of settled into a rhythm, and then they changed drastically. It wasn't bad, but I guess I just don't handle change well. Still - a good story.
I'm not going to leave a star rating since I was part of the series with this author.
This one is such a compelling, gripping book that I read in a single evening! A mysterious masked man, a girl slated for execution, an evil king, Phantom of the Opera vibes, and so much more in this swoony, no spice fantasy romance!
Once again, Callie has written a book that I didn’t want to put down! I love the depth of the characters and how you get to know them more as each new piece of information is revealed. This is a fantastic story, one I will be reading again soon!
AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING I can’t put into words how good this was. My attention span has been so bad with books the past few months so it is a huge compliment to say that I actually did not have that issue at all with this book and could not put it down. 10/5 stars
Of the first three Sacrificed Hearts books, this one takes the top spot. I love how the trust builds between Zee and Fiona to the point where if they didn’t fall in love, it just wouldn’t make sense!!!
I wish I could read more of their story. I seriously fell so hard into love with these characters. I think I need some sort of sparrow memorabilia because of this book. 🥹 This will easily be one of my comfort reads that I plan on coming back to MANY TIMES!!
4.5 ⭐️ I really loved this one. There are so many great elements and themes in this book, which created a lot more depth than I was expecting. The characters and the plot are well-developed, leading me to be completely immersed in the story. When I put the book down, I definitely thought about it and it’s takeways for a while. This book gave me such a warm and nostalgic feeling, reminding me of fairytales from childhood but adapting to where I am now. This book reminds me of Beauty and the Beast, Jekyll and Hyde, and The Phantom of the Opera. I loved it. I picked up this series, not knowing what to expect but am so happy I did. On my way to read more from Callie Thomas!
