Ann has no taste in men. Her current boyfriend reeks of cologne, is deliberately careless with his feet, and openly states that dogs are fundamentally superior to cats. However, Charlie, Cupid’s human neighbor, is practically perfect. He’s handy with a can opener, he politely steps around napping felines, and he never ever turns up the stereo to earsplitting decibels. It also doesn’t hurt that Charlie and his cute Siamese lady-cat come as a package deal.
The way to a cat’s heart may be a can of tuna, but Cupid’s having a little trouble figuring out the key to human relationships. Helping Charlie win Ann’s heart proves to be an unexpected challenge. Cupid will have to employ all of his feline wiles to purge the place of the odious cat-hating boyfriend and ensure a happily-ever-after for Charlie and Ann.
Hi, there! I write sweet PG-rated feel-good romance, romantic comedy and humorous women's fiction.
When I'm not writing, I try to keep my houseplants alive, continue my quest for the perfect gingerbread recipe and enjoy spending time with my husband of many years.
Presently, I don't blog, tweet, Facebook, pinter or insta-anything. Maybe someday :).
I would normally rate a novella like this lower -- it's predictable, flatly characterized, and the writing is mediocre. But in all honesty... it's so dang cute that it's a lot more enjoyable than the sum of its parts. And its narrator, a wisecracking cat named Cupid, makes everything ten times better.
Cupid, a housecat, hates his name, but loves and adores His Lady Ann, whom he was gifted to by an ex-boyfriend. So to make His Lady happy, he plots to break her up from her loser boyfriend (whom he simply refers to as Cat Hater) and set her up with the handsome Siamese owner downstairs. But being a cat, without thumbs or the ability to speak the human language, how is a cat supposed to actually play Cupid? Especially when the silly humans don't seem to get the clue?
The writing in this book is serviceable -- not great, but average and decent enough to carry the story. It helps that the narrator is a cat, which could have been an eye-rolling gimmick but actually helps to inject some snark and self-awareness into what's otherwise an average romantic comedy. And his confusion with human habits, especially their attempts at finding a mate, is all too understandable and funny.
The plot itself is so by-the-numbers that I found myself predicting story beats way ahead of time -- the jealous exes, the disapproving mother-in-law, the best friend who tries to offer romantic advice, etc. But in all honesty... this book manages to be cute enough that I enjoyed it despite the cliches. And while the human characters don't bring anything new or revolutionary to the table, the snarky and deadpan narrator helps.
"A Cat Called Cupid" is utterly predictable... but much like a summer blockbuster, just because it's predictable and cliche doesn't mean it's not entertaining and fun regardless. And its sassy, witty narrator helps add a lot to the story, and helps it keep from descending into utter mediocracy.
This was such a fun and unique story—one of the best that Mazy Morris has ever written! The story follows a cat named Cupid, originally given as a gift by one of Ann’s previous boyfriends. Ann is Cupid's pet owner, but after her current cruel boyfriend, Jimmy (aka the "Cat Hater"), is caught stealing and cheating, Cupid seizes the opportunity to introduce Ann to their charming neighbor, Craig. From Cupid’s perspective, Craig is a lovely human with a cat named Bella, who happens to be Cupid’s love interest. Their romance is adorable, and Cupid, living up to his name, has so much personality—he’s clever, and his antics are so entertaining!
I also love how the supporting characters, like Ann’s best friend Flavia, have their own stories. And of course, Cupid steals the show with his wit and loyalty. We get a glimpse of his life and the deep affection he has for his owners.
It’s such a fun read! However, I gave it 4 stars because the ending felt a bit rushed and chaotic, though still enjoyable. I appreciated how Craig wasn’t portrayed as the typical strong and brave male protagonist we often see in books. It was refreshing to see realistic male traits rather than the fantasy male leads female readers often adore.
What bothered me, though, was Ann’s repeated involvement in toxic relationships. While it’s frustrating, I understand that in reality, some people do get stuck in a cycle of red-flag relationships. For example, she knew Jimmy had stolen from her and made her clean up after him, yet she still stayed with him and let things slide.
Overall, I’m really happy with the story, and I absolutely adore Cupid! Mazy Morris has a knack for writing witty, comforting stories with clever dialogue and delightful banter.
3.5, rounded up to 4. (1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= Yes, it was Pretty Good; 4= I LIKED IT a lot; 5= A favorite, it was great!)
A CAT CALLED CUPID, by Mazy Morris is a quick reading (about 2hrs) Rom Com contemporary romance novella. Both main characters are cat people and the story is actually written from the perspective of FMC/Ann’s cat, Cupid. Cupid is frustrated with Ann’s declining standards in selecting male companions, and so the cat decides to step in and improve her success for an agreeable life mate. ;)
A CAT CALLED CUPID is rather sweet, and I caught myself laughing a couple times at the end. This is a Clean novella that may appeal to readers of sweet romance HEAs, Pick-Me-Up stories, and/or quick reading fiction (for when time is limited). IMO, A CAT CALLED CUPID would also be appropriate for YA readers 15/16yrs+ who enjoy light romance fiction. I’ve read a couple of Mazy Morris novellas. They are perfect for that quick read before bed, a lunch break pick-me-up, or filling time between appointments. They are Rom Coms, and have left me feeling good. I have several more waiting in my tbrs.
READER CAUTIONS - Violence - No. Just humor and chuckles. PROFANITY - No. SEXUAL SITUATIONS - No. Inferred mention of romance behind closed doors in last chapter.
If you are feeling a bit down, then this little book will really cheer you up. You will find yourself laughing out loud! Cupid, is the most unusual cat. His great desire is to find the "right" man for his mistress, Lady Ann. He will find it to be quite a difficult job seeing that his mistress is rather eccentric and always falls for the wrong kind of man. The dialogues are really comical and so astute for this feline who is super intelligent. A must read.
Brilliant. Written from the cat's point of view it's an account of how he tries to live up to his name in regards to his owner who has disastrous luck with men. Take one boyfriend who steals from you, a pretty female cat, her single but handsome owner (even if his housekeeping talents are non existent), add in creditors and a sprinkle of police for a humorous read. Great characters but the absolute favourite has to be Cupid.
A cute quick freebie, Loved the POV fro the cat brilliant and his take on mobile phones, perfume and intercourse ha ha ha but you want quick cheering up on a rainy day this is book for you.
a very different and cute story, don't know that I'd call it a romance, which is how it was marked in the newsletter email where I found it, but it was fun and quick and worth what time I put on it!
Since Ann was in part some sort of a main character; I was hoping that she would be a slightly fuller character - the cat did know her the best after all; though I definitely ended up liking Craig.
Miss Ann has terrible taste in boyfriends. Thankfully she has a cat that decides to live up to his name of Cupid.
First off, while I am an animal lover, I can't say cats are in one of the top spots. This tale is told from the point of a view of Cupid, the male cat. This is a cute gimmick but I had some minor problems with it as well. Cupid had a tendency to go between making observations from what an animal could be considered to know to knowing too much. One example is that he doesn't know what customer relations is but does know what a lawyer does. The other problem is that he doesn't always read as a male to me. (Not all men are obsessed with electronics. To me that would like someone saying all women are obsessed with shoes.)Finally, Cupid switches between human and cat reactions at times. He implies his lady has some loose morals when it comes to sex and then points out that cats' big worry is whether to have sex behind the bushes or right on the sidewalk.
The humans all come off as fairly ignorant in the story. Some of that is probably due to the biased nature of Cupid. He naturally feels cats are superior and therefore sees human as lesser beings.
This story would be best for people who love cats and clean romances.
This story had me laughing right from the first page. Told through the eyes of Cupid, a tomcat with hopelessly romantic tendencies, the plot unfolds with the inciting incident making itself known through a deadbeat of a boyfriend and his sticky fingers. My Lady, Cupid's owner, must get rid of Cat Hater, her current gentleman caller. But because My Lady lacks the fortitude to do so, Cupid comes to the rescue.
The antics of this feline keep the reader glued to the page and wondering just how much our domestic pets really pay attention to our daily lives. When Cupid sees the potential of a new romantic suitor next door, he does what any desperate cat would do. Cupid forces his way into the heart of this potential new beau named Craig. Cupid's careful calculations are met with obstacles any cat would run into. But it is the determination to set things right for his much-deserved owner that keeps him from giving up.
This story tickled my funny bone all the way through. It was written with panache and just enough catnip to make the journey intoxicating. I highly recommend this novella for any animal lover out there who would love a peek into the perspective of our beloved house guests.
Very cute! Quick and easy read, and I love that it's from the cats point of view! Not overly soppy or romantic either, so I'm definitely recommending this one.
It was a cute story, but I felt the author was trying too hard using larger words. However, one can argue that because she was writing from the perspective of a cat, it could be very true of a cat. Dog lovers may disagree, but there is proof that cats are highly intelligent.
The author humorously and truthfully captured the thoughts of the main character's cat. Littered with statements of cats' intelligence and superiority (ask a cat, they'll let you know they are the best) is actually very realistic. I often see the look from my cat that informs me I am a stupid human and she deserves worship for allowing me the pleasure of her company.
Aside from the rather interesting and unusual perspective of the cat, it's simply an "okay" story. It has the happy ending. It has villains. It even has evidence of the self-sabotage many are guilty of in relationships.
Bottom line, it was an enjoyable tale with little intellectual value, so if you're just looking for a cute story to escape with, "A Cat Called Cupid" won't disappoint.
A Cat Called Cupid was a cute, quick read. Cupid's lady, Ann, doesn't have the best taste in men. Her current boyfriend is a cat hater, he steals her money, and is just not a good person. When Cupid finds a seemingly single, nice guy that lives in his building (who happens to have a nice female cat), Cupid decides he must find a way to get the two of them together.
The concept, the story told from the cat's point of view, was cute. Really Cupid did all kinds of things that it would seem like a cat wouldn't be able to do. I didn't really care though. It was fun reading how he tried to set up Ann and Craig, her neighbor. Everything works out in the end, and it was an enjoyable read. I usually don't like novellas, but Mazy Morris did a good job with this one. She did not try to fit too much story into too few pages.
A Cat Called Cupid had me laughing out loud so often that I just couldn't help but love it. It's told in a cat's point of view which made me wonder if I really wanted to read it but I am sure glad I did.
This is about a cat named Cupid who decides his Lady Ann needs to dump her boyfriend and get a new one. Since he believes she has terrible taste in men, he arranges these events. Her current boyfriend, Jimmy who Cupid calls The Cat Hater is gotten rid of after Cupid puts his plan for this in motion. Then he arranges for his Lady Ann to meet Craig who lives down the hall with his Siamese called Bella. Craig soon becomes Ann's new boyfriend.
The author did a good job of writing this story from a cat's point of view. We got to read what the cat would do in the situation, being a cat, and what the human should do in the cat's opinion. OK, so there were a couple of things the cat did that just could not have happened but, hey, this is fiction so I thought it was funny and liked it.
I am giving this rating because there was no way I could finish this story. I hate when I read a bad review from someone who didn't finish the story. This story is all from the view of the cat. This would not be bad that if the cat was funny. The book was supposed to be funny, it missed the mark completely with me. A normal cat cannot text many messages on a phone, or fake being run over to get people to meet. Sorry I can't give a better review. Even for free I would not choose this book.
Very cute story. This is written from the cat's point of view. I really dislike when an animal's persona is portrayed as a bitty baby, talking about their human as Mommy, etc. This book does NOT do that. Phew! The cat is quite a smart alec and full of himself. He is playing matchmaker for his female owner. He gets himself into some trouble but all with good intentions. Take the book at what it is. A cute story for romantics and animal lovers.
I enjoyed this novella told from the perspective of a cat. It's a given that you have to suspend belief a few times when you read these types of books, which I had no problem doing. A cat texting? No problem! I thought that this was a fun story with likeable characters; there were also several laugh out loud moments. I enjoyed Cupid and his antics and the romance part wasn't too sappy (romance is usually not my preferred genre).
This was a cute story about a cat and romance. It was narrated by the cat. It seems that Cupid's owner kept making bad choices in men, so Cupid decided to take over. The story was sweet and funny. Cupid had to work really hard to get the job done.
I always thought that cats were pretty smart and this story proves my point. If your love life isn't going well, adopt a cat.
I thought it was a cute concept. But I couldn't finish reading this. I don't object to an author choosing to not use actual dead swear words. But what did it for me was trying to read an argument where it seems like every other word was a swear word and instead of finding creative alternatives, the author chose to use # instead.
This is definitely a cute and defy funny story. I laughed quite a few times during reading this and I especially enjoy the fact the story is told for the point of view of a cat. And if this doesn't prove t you that cats are smarter than we give them credit than you don't understand how intelligent Cupid is!
Very cute romantic novella. Spoken from the cat's point of view. This cat tries to find ways to help his owner Ann find a better boyfriend. If you're a cat fan or a fan of cute novellas, this book is for you.
