A love to last a lifetime...

Stranded in Rome, with all planes grounded due to volcanic ash, Callum gratefully accepts a lift back to London with a friend-of-a-friend who's on her way home after a European road trip in a campervan.

But when he meets her, his heart plummets - she's Emma, his ex, The ex, and he can't be stuck in a van with her.

When Emma sees Callum again, she's horrified. It's taken so many years to heal her heart - she really doesn't want to spend the next few days in close quarters with him.

The blurb is very interesting, it drew me from the beginning. Emma is traveling through Italy and one of her friends back in London asks her if she could give his friend a ride back home, since all flights are cancelled. Turns out, this friend of a friend is none other than Emma's ex boyfriend, love of her life, whom she gave an ultimatum 12 years before, either her or his wild life of alcohol addiction.

The idea of two exes being stuck together in a van for days traveling was extremely interesting, but my expectations fell short. The characters and plot had so much potential, but they were under developed. Callum's addiction was reduced to 'I decided to stop and I stopped', that was anticlimactic, especially if he took this little to break an habit, then the whole plot of them not getting back together because of his addiction, collapsed.

The story became repetitive after a while, they're together, they break up, than back together and break up again. It stretched on a lot, and I mean, a lot. Also, reading both their internal monologues listing all the reasons why they couldn't be together got annoying pretty soon.

But, if you're looking for a slow burn, closed door, second chance romance don't hesitate to pick up this novel, coming out on July 29th.

I was immediately drawn in by the concept and title of this book, and I truly wanted to enjoy it! It starts off really well, but after a number of unbelievable twists and turns, it lost all direction. This plot just kept going in circles without any resolution.

The story has a few really adorable moments, however the really important issues were dismissed by the author. When it seemed like the author was taking you into a really significant story about alcoholism and other substance misuse, only to retract it and make it seem insignificant, that's when things started to go wrong for me. The book just grew worse, and neither breakup made sense.

I found the writing style to be a little strange, and I found the characters to be a little too juvenile and undeveloped, which was kind of bothersome.

Stuck in Italy needing to get home to London, Callum accepts a ride that his friend found for him.
In a journey of self exploration and attempting to find the spontaneity in life, Emma agrees to give a lift to a friend of a friend.
When their eyes lock on eachother they’re horrified to realize they already know eachother. They’re exes. The, ‘I haven’t loved anyone the way I loved them exes.
Stuck together for a week on the drive of a lifetime, they start to wonder if this could be the real deal, if things could be different now?

I adored this book. Lighthearted, romantic, funny..I love a good romantic comedy and this fit the bill. Everything from the setting of the book to the banter between characters flowed so smoothly and kept me wanting to read more and more. I had an idea of how I wanted the book to go and I got what I wanted! Truly an adorable book.

Due to volcanic ash, Callum is stranded in Rome. His friend Azim said that he has a friend who is driving from Rome to London and he can get a ride with her. Callum agreed. What he didn’t expect when he showed up at the van for the ride back to London was Emma, his ex girlfriend. The ex girlfriend that he proposed to the night he got his driver’s license and try to drive drunk. When Emma sees Callum she’s stunned. She’s spent years getting over him, and she doesn’t want to be stuck in a van with him for days. She always expected him to come back to her, but he never did. Will she finally learn the truth? Will they find their way back to each other?

This was a cute rom-com book. It’s a light, fun read. I love second chance romances, and forced proximity. There’s nothing more forced then being stuck in a van together! I enjoyed the chemistry between Callum and Emma. Their history made it easy to fall back into each other.

It was a little drawn out for me, and a little repetitive. Callum had a “wild side when he was younger, drinking a lot. But he claims it wasn’t an addiction and just “stopped. That felt like a lost opportunity.

When you pick a title like this, which is a pretty famous line from a TV show for some, you expect more discussion about what was happening when one thought they were on a break. The line is said, and then thrown away. Again, another missed opportunity.

This wasn’t a bad book by any means, and I think a lot of people who love a slow burn, second change romance will like this. It just didn’t wow me.

Callum and Emma are exes from 12 years ago who are in denial about how much they are still hung up on each other (they remind themselves of this a lot). They end up getting stuck together on a road trip around Italy back to their homes in London. Through this journey, they are reminded of their previous relationship and try to fight the feelings that are still there for each other.

Tropes:
second chance romances
Dual POV
The one that got away
Friends with benefits

This is a short and sweet, closed door romance. I really liked the characters. I thought Emma was very quirky and Callum was a good person who had the best intentions even though I thought his actions might not have come off that way. They clearly have a lot of chemistry and tension. Along the way, they enter this FWB/holiday fling relationship, and I was face palming at Emma's false hope/optimism for more while Callum had been clear on his intentions from (kind of) the start but also was still giving mixed signals. The only thing I didn't like was the reasoning behind how the relationship had ended and the one hindering them from restarting their relationship now. In the end, I was like "oookay..." when this reasoning somehow gets resolved after a small realization by one of the characters. Emma tries to get "closure" on her relationship with Callum like a million times in this book for some reason, but honestly, I kind of get it because I was kind of confused myself (LOL).

I really liked Jo Lovett's writing. It was humorous with tons of laugh out loud moments (namely, Emma's driving and her beloved van, Miranda), and I also teared up at times because the emotions were written very well. I am a sucker for second chance romances and angst.

The beginning of this story had so much potential and I was really enjoying it! Things started to go downhill for me when it felt like the author was leading you into a really important story about alcohol dependency and other substance abuse, only to then backpedal and make it a nonissue. It very much felt like her mind was changed midway through and she didn’t want to fully commit to that storyline, which made me completely lose any sympathy for Callum. The emotional impact felt ripped out from under me. I was already feeling like his internal monologues were becoming really repetitive and after that interaction, I found Callum to be just another jerk terrified of commitment. Unfortunately this was a miss for me. Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for a copy of this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I would firstly just like to say a big thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources who very kindly forwarded me an arc copy of this book, for my kindle, in return for my honest review

This book was a wonderful read and such a lovely, heartfelt, feel-good romance that was so heartwarming it left me feeling all the warm and fuzzy feelings!

It was such an easy book to read and i found myself whizzing through the pages until i had, very quickly come to the end.

We Were On A Break was very lighthearted and very funny too and i found myself chuckling along in quite a few places!

I loved both of the main characters, Callum and Emma and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them and seeing their story unfold. The banter between the pair was absolutely top notch!!

This was the most perfect second chance romance, with the perfect happy ever after too!!

This was a cute and easy read. My first book from Lovett and I fell in love with the plot, the writing style and the characters.

Callum is stranded in Italy thanks to that pesky volcano several years ago that disrupted most air traffic. (Remember that one?) Somehow, he has managed to bag a lift back across Europe, and he happily gets to the meeting point one early morning. Except that the driver is his ex. Whom he hasn’t seen for many years. And whom he left broken-hearted. Can these exes make it back to England without sitting in stony silence for the entire way? Will this be the road trip from hell for the exes?

I liked how the writer alternates between Callum and Emma’s perspectives, so you really get a true sense of the character’s feelings. It made them more vulnerable and realistic. Emma wears her heart on her sleeve and it is obvious very early on in the road trip that she still has feelings for Callum. I think that deep down, Callum suspects this but it takes him a long time to reach the same place. A lot of his emotions are hidden by deliberately deflecting anything remotely personal, instead focussing on the present and the achingly slow driving along the motorway. If he was the driver, getting back to England would have been just a couple of days with constant driving. But with Emma? She’s a slow tortoise and her camper van is not the most reliable.

This added a lot more depth to the story so readers aren’t just faced with two characters in a confined space. Thanks to Emma, we are taken on a bit of a tour of Europe. From staying with monks to ending up at a dodgy beach party, we really get a sense of Emma’s adventurous side a complete juxtaposition to Callum’s more strait-laced behaviour. However, over time, Callum starts to thaw out and appreciate what this unexpected road trip has to offer. Even if he is hiding some secrets.

A summery tale, I loved the travelling and the romantic element. There is definite chemistry between the protagonists but it was never completely clear what Lovett intended for them. When Callum eventually owns up to Emma, I really sympathised with her because it is like her world is breaking apart all over again. However, thanks to readers learning of their history, I think it just made Callum a more rounded character and I could kind of understand his actions.

Warm and witty, this romantic story shows how significant your first love can be. I really enjoyed seeing Emma and Callum’s relationship develop once more and I thought this was an entertaining and light-hearted read, perfect for the busy times of year.

With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

My Opinion

We Were on a Break was a sweet, second chance romance. Callum and Emma are forced to spend a couple of days in close proximity when all flights back home are cancelled. The title really appealed to me and the plot was just as interesting. Jo Lovett has written a relatively short book that will take you on a journey from Rome to London. Overall this was a very enjoyable book that I finished in an afternoon.

Emma is traveling through Italy on her way back to England in her camper van when her friend asks her to give another friend a ride as all the flights and trains are canceled. Emma agrees, not realizing that it's her first love, Callum, who she gave an ultimatum to 12 years ago to get his act together so they can be together or they were through and that was the last time she saw him.
Now theyre stuck together in the camper for a few days with no option but to face the past and their feelings and whether or not things could be different this time around or if this is just a vacation fling This was a slow burn, closed door, second chance romance that will make you believe in love.

When I started this one, I was pretty sure I was going to love it. The prose was clear, the story flowed, the connection to the characters - due to the dual POV alternating chapters - really felt like it was there. I was looking forward to this second chance story so much... Alas, it just went downhill from there. Too many TSTL moments one on top of the other, and the whole ride just felt forced and not at all organic, which killed the engaging rom-com vibe so fast.
I suppose it could be a good one to while away a vacation weekend or the like, but for the second chance reunited lovers trope, this one was sadly a miss for me.

A cute second chance romance from Jo Lovett. Emma and Callum have history but never really had the Oporto come to terms with their break up. So when I saw that they’d unwittingly been put together in a journey home to London from
Europe, I knew we were in for a treat.
Their journey through Italy and France sounded great if not a little tense and I loved seeing their new relationship develop over the miles. You could see both of them had changed over the years and Jo Lovett managed to capture the humour and emotion of their journey in Miranda completely.
With a lot of laughter and tears at times, this is an entertaining light romance read.

This stroy grew on me. I started out with high hopes, then got a little disappointed as it didn't quite live up to my expectations and Callum seemed like a bit of an odd main male character, but then the story and the characters grew on me and I ended up enjoying the story.
Tropes: second chance romance & forced proximity
I enjoyed going on the journey with Emma and Callum, but I didn't love the characters so was less invested in the story than I would have been if I had loved the characters.

Title: We Were on a Break by Jo Lovett

Release Date: July, 29th, 2024

3.5 Stars

"We Were on a Break" by Jo Lovett is a charming and heartwarming romantic comedy that takes readers on a scenic journey through Italy and France, with a dash of nostalgia and the bittersweet tang of rekindled love.

This novel is a delightful read offering a blend of humour, romance, and emotional depth that is both entertaining and touching.

Callum and Emma, exes from a relationship that ended 12 years prior, find themselves in an unexpected and awkward reunion. Stranded in Rome due to volcanic ash canceling all flights, Callum accepts a ride back to London from Emma, who is returning from a European road trip in her camper van. The situation is less than ideal for both, as they are still nursing wounds from their past and are hesitant to spend time together in such close quarters.

However, as they embark on their journey, the forced proximity and the scenic beauty of the countries they pass through begin to work their magic. The road trip becomes a metaphorical journey back in time, as Callum and Emma are forced to confront their unresolved feelings and the reasons behind their breakup.

The narrative is peppered with humorous moments, particularly those involving Emma's quirky personality and her beloved van, Miranda, which provide comic relief and keep the tone light and enjoyable.

Lovett's writing is a standout, with a perfect balance of humour and emotional depth. The characters are well-developed, and their interactions are both funny and poignant, making the reader root for their reconciliation. The novel explores themes of second chances, the complexities of love, and the idea that sometimes, fate has a way of bringing people back together when the time is right.

"We Were on a Break" is a short and sweet, closed-door romance that captures the essence of a summer romance. It's a story that will make you laugh out loud, tear up, and ultimately believe in the power of love to overcome the past.

For readers who are fans of second chance romances and enjoy a good dose of angst, this book is a must-read. Jo Lovett has crafted a beautiful story that reminds us that sometimes, the most unexpected detours can lead us back to where we belong.

Thank you to The Publisher Boldwood Books ,The Author Jo Lovett & NetGalley for an advanced reader copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review.

3.5 stars. I listened to Jo Lovett's novel, "We Were on a Break," though ŷ does not show that edition, but rest assured, I listened to it, fabulous accents and all! I loved the 2nd half, when it seemed more serious and thought provoking, than the first half, where I was questioning whether or not I wanted to keep going. I am glad I did.
At the start Emma is tasked with giving a lift back to London to a guy who knows a friend of a friend, but in actuality, that guy, Callum, and Emma had loved one another deeply a long, long time ago. Emma had broken up with Callum a decade earlier due to his issues with alcohol. He no longer has a driver's license, and needed to get back to London from a trip to Rome. Emma was heading there as well, but had planned to makes stops in Europe along the way. The last person with whom each would want to be stuck in a camper van was one another! Volcanic ash had shut down roads, and the van had non functioning windshield wipers. Thus began days on the road together in some interesting, funny, and compromising positions, including spending a night in a monastery. Chemistry is difficult to ignore, and these two definitely had that, but she has been so hurt that he never never got back in touch with her, as promised, when he got sober, that she does not trust him. He HAD gotten sober, and had become a lawyer, but had not reached out to her, ever.
In the second half of the book, which has some romantic, spicy scenes, the dialogue grows more serious, and we eventually come to understand why Callum has stayed away. While traveling together, it becomes obvious that these characters still have deep feelings for one another, but what kept Callum from committing to her originally, is still at the forefront of his mind, leaving Emma facing possible heartbreak yet again.
This book was far more serious than I had expected, and I liked that about it. I grew attached to the characters and waited for them to figure things out and stop being fools. I will not say if they achieved that or not, but I am glad I continued to read until the last page!

A second-chance contemporary romance sprinkled with humour, pathos and laughter, We Were on a Break is the uplifting new novel by Jo Lovett.

Callum is desperate to get back to London, but with volcanic ash grounding all the planes in Italy, it looks like he’s going to be stuck in Rome for the foreseeable future. Until fate intervenes and he manages to find a lift back home with a friend of a friend who is also heading back after a European road trip in a caravan. Only, it turns out that the friend of a friend is not a complete stranger but somebody he once knew very well his ex girlfriend, Emma!

Awkward does not begin to describe how the two of them feel the second they clap eyes on one another and realise that they are going to be stuck in very close proximity together for days on end! Emma is naturally not exactly over the moon to find herself back in the company of the man who had broken her heart into a million tiny pieces again. It’s taken her years to heal from the acrimonious end of their relationship, so being in Callum’s company is the last place in the world she wants to be. However, could fate have had a hand in bringing them together in the most unlikely of ways?

Is time truly a great healer? Can Emma and Callum draw a line under the past once and for all and look to the future together? Or should the two of them simply let sleeping dogs lie?

Jo Lovett’s escapist romantic comedy will steal your heart. We Were on a Break is a witty, warm-hearted and emotional tale about facing up to the past, starting over and love lost and found that will make you laugh out loud and have you shedding a tear or two. Emma and Callum’s love story had me on tenterhooks as I found myself completely invested and involved in their journey to their happy ever after.

An enjoyable contemporary romance perfect for Tessa Bailey fans, Jo Lovett’s We Were on a Break is a sparkling and feel-good read that will brighten up your day.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

📚 PRE-PUBLICATION BOOK REVIEW 📚

We Were On A Break By Jo Lovett
Publication Date: July 29, 2024
Publisher: Boldwood Books

📚MY RATING: ⭐⭐⭐✨
(Rounded up to 4)

📚MY REVIEW:

This second chance rom-com from Jo Lovett features the classic will-they-won't-they trope with a fun twist: the main characters, Emma and Callum, are exes who are unexpectedly thrown together twelve years after their relationship ended.

This story has so many cute moments as Emma and Callum traverse across Europe together on a road trip, after all Europe flights are grounded. In their attempt to get back home to London, they find themselves in so many beautiful places and participating in so many fun adventures.

While this story was endearing overall, I found myself getting a little annoyed by the main characters' refusal to communicate well with one another. Maybe this is also a miscommunication trope? If it is, maybe that trope just isn't my favorite. 😉 I just wanted to reach into the book and shake both Emma and Callum, yelling at them to "just say it!" There may have been so much focus on them miscommunicating that there were missed chances for the story to take cuter twists and turns sometimes.

If your favorite tropes include will-they-won't-they, miscommunication, or second chances, or if you love an HEA rom-com involving a European holiday, I think you'll really enjoy this book. While it wasn't my favorite rom-com ever, it WAS really cute and a quick read. Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!

The Blurb :

But when he meets her, his heart plummets - she's Emma, his ex, The ex, and he can't be stuck in a van with her.
When Emma sees Callum again, she's horrified. It's taken so many years to heal her heart - she really doesn't want to spend the next few days in close quarters with him.

My Thoughts:
We meet Emma, on her way back to England with her friend in her beloved Camper van named Miranda. When they agree to give a lift to a friend of a friend who has had his flight cancelled due to the Volcanic ash. It turns out to be none other than her first love, Callum, she gave him an ultimatum to 12 years ago and hasnt seen him since.
As the couple spend a week together travelling through Italy and France, we learn more about what happened and how they got to where they are now.
I loved how the couple were none too happy to see each other at first but as the story develops we can see that there is unfinished business, told from both points of view, there is clearly still some chemisty between them.
Jo Lovett delivers a refreshing read about second chances. She has a love for the characters and grips the reader into the storyline, its a summer read of fun and romance all rolled into one.
Looking forward to the next book from Jo Lovett.

A cute slow-burn second chance romance.

Callum is stranded in Rome and desperately needs to get back to England, through his friends he manages to acquire a lift that will get him back to where he needs to go within a few days, only problem is when he arrives the beautiful woman who he will spend countless hours in close proximity happens to be his Ex girlfriend Emma who he never truly fell out of love with and it seems like she's not looking forward to the journey either.
This book includes:
- second chance romance
= grumpy sunshine
- the one that got away
- right person wrong time

Overall I did enjoy this book but I don't think it was Lovett's strongest work. It was pretty 50/50 for things I loved and things I hated. The scenes of the two travelling together were beautiful and made me want to immediately jump on a plane to do some travelling. it was also really nice to see the way the two had changed over the years they hadn't been together and separately grew as people.

However there was a lot of miscommunication throughout the entirety of the book and the kept so many important things from each other where they could have just been open and honest that it became frustration with how long it went on for.

it was however a nice story and I do usually enjoy Jo Lovett's books.

Breaking up is never easy, even when you know why

From the start this promised to be a fun read. Callum was stuck in Rome, all airlines were grounded, the trains fully booked and as he couldn’t drive he had no other way of getting home. Fortunately his friend Azim was able to put him in touch with Emma who was driving back from Rome to London, he messaged her and they arranged a time and place to meet. He was stunned when he saw that his driver was Em, the girl he left 12 years ago. Conversation was difficult but they kept it light, singing their way through Italy and France, the journey was interesting and full of incident. I liked Emma she was fun, likeable and made friends easily. Callum was a puzzle, he and Em were together for 3 years but his behaviour then was wild and unpredictable and she was struggling to cope so she suggested they take a break until he sorted himself out and come back once he did; she never saw him again.
Em had to wait a long time for an explanation of Callum’s behaviour 12 earlier but I thought it was a bit nonsensical. At one point in the book he said he thought he was the stupidest man alive and I must agree with that assessment. The book was well written and easy to read and I enjoyed most of it but the last few chapters felt stilted and didn’t flow as well as the rest of the story.

In this chaotic and entertaining modern romance novel, volcanic ash has grounded flights out of Italy and Callum needs to get back to London. A friend of a friend, Emma, is roadtripping around Europe and could give him a ride to London from Rome. However, Callum and Emma dated a long time ago and are now stuck in her tiny tired van at a leisurely pace across Italy and France. Neither of them want to be stuck in this car, especially since their break up went so poorly, but something seems to be meddling in their reunion that forces them to come to terms with the past so they can move on with their futures. Callum and Emma are quirky, unique, and relatable people with complex personalities and backstories, and these quirks add something charming and whimsical to this novel. The various romantic tropes which befall Callum and Emma are well-chosen and brilliant, adding to the tension between the characters over the course of the novel. Charming, chaotic, enjoyable, and romantic, Callum and Emma’s road trip is a fascinating trip to follow, and fans of Lovett’s books (and other titles from the genre), will definitely enjoy this romantic European adventure.

Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the advance copy.

This is a lovely romance that blends emotional depth and a second-chance love story that will tug at your heartstrings.
Emma is headed home after a European road trip and agrees to give a friend of a friend a ride back home when his plane is grounded. She had no idea the friend was Callum, her ex who it's taken years for her to get over. Now she will be stuck in the car with him, she doesn't think her heart can take it. Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an ARC of Jo Lovett’s We Were on a Break for an honest review. In this book Emma, the owner of a van, tells her friend she is happy to give a different stranded friend, Callum, a ride from Rome to London since he cannot find another way. Turns out it is THE Callum. Her ex and things didn’t necessarily end well between them.

I loved the idea behind the book and felt it had so much potential. That being said, I had a difficult time getting through this book. I just felt like it dragged on and it didn’t really pick up for me until I was about 70% through the book. If I hadn’t been giving a review of the book, I might have put it down and not finished it.

The book is told through differing opinions which kept things interesting so the reader could understand why the characters were acting and reacting how they were. There were definitely funny, entertaining parts, and by the last 30% of the book I couldn’t put the book down which is why I gave the book 3 stars.

I'm reviewing this via NetGalley, as part of a tour with Rachel's Random Resources.

This was a delightful romantic comedy. The two main characters are Callum and Emma, a former couple who find themselves in each other's company again, by an unfortunate coincidence.

Throughout the book, the perspective switches between Callum and Emma. I enjoyed the fact that as a reader, I was given both perspectives on the situation, as it was an opportunity to connect with both characters equally. From the beginning, I found both of them quite humorous, and related to both of them in different ways. Their interactions and behaviour made me chuckle.

While this was a very funny book, I found that as the story progressed, there were also some deeper moments that tugged at my heartstrings, and some heartwarming moments that made me smile. This was a very light read too; I finished it in a couple of hours.

If you are a romance reader, this could put a smile on your face. Thank you to NetGalley, Rachel's Random Resources, Boldwood Books, and to the author, for the opportunity to read and review this.

Emma and Callum hadn't seen each other since twelve years before when they had a messy breakup of sorts. All flights in Europe were grounded due to volcanic ash and Callum needed to get back to London from Rome immediately. Emma was doing a road trip in her van and was roped into helping Callum get back home. They just didn't know that they knew each other until the day they met again.

That day was awkward and they had to decide whether they'd be able to bear close quarters for over a week until they got home. Emma never got closure from their past relationship so that conversation had to happen.

They soon got into a fling of sorts which Callum insisted would be temporary but as expected, past feelings were resurrected and that made for a messy goodbye when they parted ways. When they did get back together it was months later and I loved the ending.

The highlight of this book for me was the road trip itself. I loved coming along as they toured the Italian countryside, met up with all sorts of characters, and even faked marriage at some point to get into a hotel 😂

Thank you to Netgalley and Publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
