A brother's best friend, enemies to lovers, second chance romance.
When dedicated restaurant owner Layla Williams finally agrees to take a much-needed vacation, she’s expecting a week of relaxation in the picturesque Italian mountainside with her best friend.
But when her friend cancels at the last minute, Layla's plans are thrown into disarray. To her dismay, her brother’s infuriating best friend, Josh, is sent in her place.
Layla and Josh have a history—one that’s more bitter than sweet.
Things go from bad to worse when they discover that their quaint Italian accommodations only have one bed.
Forced into close quarters, their mutual animosity seems to deepen. But amid Italy’s romantic charm, from quaint vineyards to bustling markets, sparks begin to fly in a different way.
Will the enchanting beauty of Italy and their growing attraction they both have for each other lead them to discover a connection neither expected? Or will old grudges and fiery tempers ruin their chance at love?
Author of spicy romance novels! Lover of dogs, wine, and coffee. Loves to write books that pull at your heartstrings but never leave out the dirty parts!
it was just weird and i couldn’t understand anything. he kissed her when she was 17 and he was 23. thank you, it was only a kiss, because i don’t care what you say, she’s still 17. also, she is saying that he broke her heart but how? she kissed him and then he was with the other girl. but they weren’t together? so why.. i’m just confused.
the whole conflict of the book was unrealistic. they both were pretty cold to each other but both of them were telling how in love they were the whole time. was it really necessary to be in a same room to confess feelings? felt a little childish. and the “back home scenes with parents, siblings and friends.
however, i liked the writing. it was pretty good and chapters were great paced!
this book was so good! I love a good second chance romance and this was so good! I loved how well Layla and Josh communicated with each other and the spice was really spicing I loved it!
This was absolutely the sweetest story. A boy and a girl who have been in love with each other since childhood finally get it together and confess their love to each other.
I know there’s so many stories like this, but I love the twist and how they ended up being stuck in a close proximity.
The ending is totally swoon worthy 🥰
* I would’ve rated it higher, but I’m not a huge spice person and this one had a little bit too much for me
The First Time gave me the feeling of closure I didn’t know I needed.
The story is so sweet and heartwarming. Two lovers finally have their moment after years.
Second chance romance is my favorite type of romance because it gives us the opportunity to have that experience in our imagination even if it doesn’t happen in our life!
There was quite a bit of spice, which I’m totally fine with but I wish there was more building of the relationship than spice!
The twist was such a nice touch and the ending gave me all the warm and fuzzy feelings!
4 Star Review The First Time (Isle of Hope #2) by Nicole Baker
Nicole Baker is a new author to me and I can’t believe I have not come across her books before.
I love second chance at love stories and this one ticked numerous boxes for me.
This is restaurant owner Layla Williams and her brother’s l best friend, Josh’s story and ai really enjoyed it. It was a sweet, romantic love story with characters whose story you cannot help but become invested in . .
The writing was descriptive and ai could envisage Italy whilst reading.
This book had me giggling and kicking my feet fr. I literally could not put this down. The synopsis of this book was great and includes so many of my favourite tropes. Wym they get to Italy and there’s only one bed!???! Sign me up!
Layla was a really likeable character and i loved that she wanted to carry on achieving her work goals when there was no expectation to. Her relationship with her brothers was good to read and i loved how supportive she was of Josh with his past and inner demons.
Josh was so cute, respectful and lovessss the hell out of Layla. I am a sucker for ‘loved her forever and he literally has (10 years). He went from broody, irritable to worshiping the ground she walks on.
This book is a perfect summer read; my only point is that the first half felt rushed but it quickly levelled out in the second half and made for a much more enjoyable read 🤍
This book is a standout for fans of the friends-to-enemies-to-lovers trope! Layla is an independent businesswoman with a love for food, and as she lets her guard down, we get to see a softer, more vulnerable side of her. Josh, on the other hand, is a big teddy bear who, despite his childhood insecurities, opens up and embraces his love for Layla. Their character growth is both satisfying and heartwarming.
The banter between them is spot-on, earning a solid 5/5. It’s witty, sharp, and adds a delightful layer to their relationship. The chemistry is palpable, making their journey from friends to enemies to lovers feel authentic and earned.
The spice in this book is perfectly balanced with the emotional depth of their connection. One of the most unforgettable moments is when Josh pushes Layla up against a wall in the alleys of Italy and kisses her—a scene that perfectly captures their intense connection.
Overall, this story is a perfect blend of romance, humor, and heartfelt moments. Nicole has crafted a narrative that’s as spicy as it is sweet, making it a highly recommended read!
This was a fun read that I really enjoyed. I'm always down for the brother's best friend trope. The book was cute, sweet, witty, spicy, funny, touching, and overall just leaves you feeling happy and content.
Layla is in desperate need of a vacation and is all set to kickstart her trip to Lake Como, Italy, with her best friend, Charolette. But when Charolette has to cancel her trip at the last minute due to an unexpected situation, she doesn't want to ruin this vacation for Layla, so she tries to find someone who could travel with her last minute, which ultimately leads to Josh going on this trip in her stead.
Josh and Layla don't get along, not since the way things went down between them almost a decade ago. But when his best friend and Layla's older brother, Asher, asks him for a favor to accompany his sister on a vacation that is much needed for her, Josh gives in and agrees.
At first, neither of them are thrilled about this turn of events and can't help but bicker or ignore one another. But once they reach Italy, the beauty of the place immediately puts them at ease, and they can't help but share their awe and admiration for the place with each other. As they spend time together, in only one room, with only one bed and no escape from all the proximity, they can't deny the chemistry and growing tension between them.
Josh was a very lovable character. He knew how to push her buttons to get her to react and loved it when she reacted to him. He was proud of Layla for getting to where she had and supported her every step of the way, knowing that she was her own person, but at the same time he also took care of her and showered her with attention and love, making sure Layla knew how special she was to him. Everything he did to bring a smile to her face was incredibly sweet. He also took the steps to make up for his mistakes, even though it was a struggle for him.
Josh has insecurities that hold him back from starting something with Layla, and he's spent a long time fighting to keep his feelings for her suppressed. I truly felt bad for the things he felt about himself and how he seemed convinced by the voices in his head. But with this trip and all the time he's spending getting to truly know Layla, he starts wondering if he could be the right person for her after all. And once he makes up his mind, he gives it his all.
Layla was a really amazing character. She worked really hard to get her business to where it was and valued her independence a lot. She wanted someone who would support her dreams and wouldn't be intimidated by them. She has closed herself off from relationships for a while now and has put all her time and focus on her work. This trip is about finding herself and trying to have a balance between her career and having new experiences in life.
Layla had her heart broken once by Josh a decade ago and has resorted to keeping him at a distance. But spending all that time in close proximity and having these new experiences alongside Josh makes it difficult to keep up the pretense. All the feelings she's had for him for years start to bubble up, but at the same time she doesn't want to risk getting hurt by him again.
At first they had a rocky start when the trip began due to all the animosity that's grown between them in the past decade. However, as they explore Italy, they also start exploring more about each other, seeing how easy it is to be together when they aren't trying so hard to keep their distance. I loved how Josh slowly works on proving himself to her and patiently waits for her to give him a chance. Their relationship really felt effortless, and they helped put each other's doubts and worries to rest with time.
The spice was freaking amazing. Josh's dirty talking was SO HOT, and I loved every second of it. The way he loved taking control in the bedroom had me fanning myself. I especially loved this because Layla wasn't shy about asking for what she likes, or experimenting with Josh, and taking control too.
I love how supportive the side characters were. They were a fun mix, and I'm definitely interested in reading all their books.
I do wish there was at least one chapter or a flashback showing us what happened in the past or how they were with each other before things got messed up, but that's just my opinion because that's something I personally like in books.
Thank you to Nicole Baker and Love Notes PR for providing me with the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The First Time is a beautiful second chance romance and I absolutely loved it! I didn’t read the first in the series, but I definitely plan to go back and read that as well!
It starts off with the FMC, Layla, taking a trip to Lake Como, Italy to relax and escape her everyday, by the book life. First off - visiting Lake Como has always been a dream of mine (I live in Europe so it’s super close) and this book just helped knock it to the top of my bucket list.
The trip was originally booked with her best friend but unfortunately she can no longer go and she has to find a replacement. This is where Josh comes in.
Josh is a love interest from her past who broke her heart, so of course this is Laylas worst nightmare. This is where all the fun begins.
Little did they know, between the bickering and banter, traveling the beautiful country side of Italia would actually bring them closer together and heal some of that hurt from the past.
The chemistry between Josh and Layla is on fire and this trip is what helps them discover their lust & attraction for one another. It helps rekindle the flame that never truly burnt out.
I’m a sucker for any male POV in a romance novel and this book does the perfect job at giving you just that. Josh’s POV allows us to truly understand what happened in the past and where his mind is at in the current moment.
I love how gentle and sweet Josh can be one minute, then very commanding and spicy the next.
Overall this book is absolutely adorable and I loved everything about it. It’s the perfect easy, light hearted, HEA romance. I love these characters and am so happy I got to be part of their world.
Thank you to Love Notes PR and Nicole Baker for sending me an eARC💜
Thanks to the author and Love Notes Pr for the ARC. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a second chance, brother's best friend and kinda enemies to lovers story.
Layla is going on a vacation with her best friend Charlotte, but Charlotte has to cancel at the last minute due to an unexpected situation. She doesn't want Layla to cancel too, so she finds another to go in her stead. Enter Josh. Josh is best friends and works with Layla's older brother Asher. Josh and Layla don't get along, because of something that happened in the past. But he agrees to go on the trip with Layla.
Layla is hardworking and values her independence a lot. She has closed herself off to relationships and has put everything into her work. She just wants someone who will support her dreams and not expect her to stay at home and just be the wife. Her getting her heart broken by Josh still has some effect on her.
I like Josh. He is lovable and knows how to push Layla's buttons. He is really sweet to her and wants to give her everything. He is insecure about himself and that is very relatable. It is hard fighting those voices telling you that you are not good enough.
It was a good story, a lovely summer read. The spice was hot. The scene with her watching. Oh my. I always love a good dual pov and I love how it gives an insight to Josh's thoughts and insecurities.
But to me it was too easy, I miss some drama and angst. What little drama there was, was easily taken care of. Otherwise a good book.
It’s such a beautiful small town romance and I loved it. This is my first book by Nicole Baker and i absolutely and throughly enjoyed. I haven’t read book 1 from the series but I am in love with this one.
It starts when Layla is pushed out of her daily mundane routine by her best friend Charlotte and her manager Zane (again amazing characters) to Italy. Unfortunately Charlotte cannot go with her last minute so she asks Josh to go. Layla’s nightmare comes true at the airport and the story picks up with their fun bickering as they land in Italy. As the trip proceeds they discover different sides to each other lust, attraction, friendship, trust and a lot more. The trip marks the beginning of their relationship. Their chemistry is just sizzling.
I love how Josh’s POV has helped us understand the intrusive thoughts and feelings underneath a confident man. His insecurities and so many other layers come through.
Overall the book has a very beautiful flow from all the fun parts to the spicy and the emotional bits. I am new to Nicole Baker books but the warmth I got while reading her piece was divine. She captivates the reader into the emotions of book leaving imprints on their minds which is the most essential part for me while reading. I want to feel the seeds of everything in a book and she gave that. I wasn’t very confident when I started reading but I am so glad I read it and now I am waiting to read the next one while I go back and read the first book as well.
I am in love with the trops in this book and I am a sucker for romance second chance at romance. Layla is a feisty girl and knows what she wants. I like how she is a business woman and is doing what she loves. I loved Layla ambition on being an independent woman and running her restaurant with her best friend. In another lifetime I would be Layla because I love to cook but I suck at it. Josh was an old High School crush that didn’t work out back in the day and they are forced to reconnect on their Italy trip. Their chemistry is obvisous to everyone but themselves, I feel like that happens a lot. I really feel like you should read the first book so you can really understand all the characters in this story. You are able to really see Josh and Layla character unfold and see their relationship grow. I feel like I can relate to their story and these things really do happen in real life. I was in love with this story and glad I got to experience it. Go grab both these books in this series and enjoy.
when i think of a fun summer read, i think of fast paced, binge worthy, romance books set amidst gorgeous scenery, with witty banter and a helping of spice. this book was my first nicole baker read and it ticked all of those boxes! i absolutely flew through it and i bet you will too.
although it took me a minute to connect with the fmc, layla’s ambition in her work is really admirable as is her vision for her life. she knows what she wants and isn’t willing to put her dreams on hold for a man and we love to see it 👏
josh 🥺 this man needs a hug. he puts up with a lot and i think his troubles are easy to relate to. he’s so sweet to layla and we love a man who’s obsessed with his girl.
i loved the italian backdrop for this story! it makes me want to take a pasta making class and drink wine while watching the sunset 🍷🍝 i’m actually headed to lake como next year so i’m taking notes for my own trip!
overall, this is a pretty light read. the drama isn’t overwhelming and you get pretty good vibes the whole way through it’s something you can easily fit into your reading list before the end of summer, so hop to it!
check this one out if you like: ♡︎ brother’s best friend romance ♡︎ second chance romance ♡︎ forced proximity ♡︎ only one bed ♡︎ spice 🌶
thank you so much to @lovenotes.pr and @nicolebaker_author for the gifted arc 🫶🏼
4.75/5 ⭐️ 3.5/5 🌶 I got this as an ARC, thanks to Love Notes PR and the book's author, Nicole Baker. So this is the second book in the Isle of Hoop series, I didn't read the first book, but I believe this isn't necessary. When I saw what this book was about, I was immediately intrigued.
It is a small-town romance, with the brother's best friend and a second chance romance. If this isn't good I don't know what is. Both of the main characters I loved, Josh and Layla are such interesting characters. It's dual POV, which is so important to the story and helps you understand them even more, and like them even more.
There is spice in the book, so be aware of that before going into it. But there is more to the story than just the spice.
Overall a vert good book and would recommend to everyone who loves a small-town romance and a brothers best friend situation.
i have no clue where to start with this book, it was sweet, spicy and beautiful. it’s a super fun and easy book to read, the pace was great and the plot was so good. i loved the blurb and the tropes so i knew i was going to be a fan but i didn’t expect to love it as much as i did. josh is a wonderful character who knew what he wanted and would be respectful to ensure that he never pushed or took advantage. he was the perfect gentleman to layla and a very good match. layla was a sweet character who never wanted to be looked after and josh knew that and wanted her to be her own woman but also be his, they worked so well together and their chemistry was clear. it was so genuine and their relationship was so authentic to read. i hated that they waited so long to be together and their past wasn’t as easy. i’m glad they managed to have italy to bring them together and give them the start they needed.
the writing in this is incredible, nicole really did an amazing job as you can picture the settings and it truly transports you to italy and small town savannah. i'm so thankful i got to read this arc, i adored every moment of it and i really recommend reading when it comes out on August 9th
3.5⭐️🌶 Thank you to Love Notes PR for the gifted ARC. The First Time by Nicole Baker is a brother’s best friend, enemies to lovers, second chance romance novel. I really enjoyed this book and the writing style. It was so easy to get into and had such short chapters that kept me reading on. I loved the two main characters, Josh and Layla and I also loved the side characters as well. I loved reading about Josh and Laylas holiday to Italy and how there relationship started to develop. There’s lots of tension, nick names- he calls her Freckles- dual pov, fast paced, dirty talk, spice, age gap and found family. Overall I would really recommend this book💗
The First Time by Nicole Baker is available to read and buy on August 9th!!🌸
I wanted to love this, but I didn’t, unfortunately.
It has so many things that I love in a romance - brothers best friend, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, only one bed, cool international location, etc. But alas, I never really felt invested.
I think part of it may be that I didn’t vibe with Nicole Baker’s writing style. It’s very quick and a lot of telling not showing. I think some readers may really vibe with this as it’s almost written like someone is verbally telling you this story. Unfortunately, for me, it just made things feel a bit rushed, glossed over, or lacking details at times. It felt difficult to connect to the characters or feel emotionally invested.
I did like some plot points and scenes in the book. Some were really memorable - like when Layla walks in on Josh, and the sweet gesture at the end. I also liked the time in Italy overall and wish it had been extended a bit more.
In general, I don’t think this book was quite my jam. But, if you want a spicy romance with some short and sweet scenes then you might enjoy this one.
Thanks to Love Notes PR for the opportunity to read this ARC!
Firstly I want to thank LoveNotes PR and the author for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Unfortunately, The First Time missed the mark for me personally. I felt that the plot was unsatisfying and the book leaned towards being all about smut more than anything. For me personally, I’m not a fan of the insta-love trope and that’s what this felt like. Everything was so fast paced and the spicy situations they were placed in didn’t feel relatable/ realistic. I didn’t particularly care for the FMC, Layla, as I felt she was kind of selfish and naive. I will say I did like the MMC Josh when he wasn’t solely thinking of spice. However, I felt there could have been so much more expanded on for both of these characters. I also didn’t like the way everyone turned against Josh over a certain misstep when he was entitled to his feelings/ reaction given the situation, it felt like everyone else blew it way out of proportion. It wasn’t really that big of a deal. Overall I will say I did enjoy the beginning of the book when they take their vacation to Italy, but felt like when they got back it became more spice focused and was super fast paced it didn’t feel fleshed out.
* ARC * Brother's Best Friend This book had so much going on! I really enjoyed it. The only thing I'd say was not my favorite was the speed of the book. By 60% I thought the book was going to end. I love that type of ending. But that's also how I knew there would be a third act break up. I really enjoyed these characters. I love the family aspect as well. There is just something about having siblings that will tease and support you. These characters grew a lot in a short period of time. Great example for "money isn't everything " This book was definitely full of spicy scenes and cute banter! Absolutely loved!
-This is an ARC review. Thanks to the author for providing it- -careful: spoilers-
A really lovely summer read, situated in Italy and Georgia about Layla and Josh. They have been bickering for 10 years, ever since they kissed but Josh walked away from her. Layla hates him and he’s irritated every time he has to be around her. When Charlotte, Layla’s friend, has to cancel the girls trip to Italy, she asks Josh to accompany Layla, knowing full well that they secretly are attracted to each other. So, when in Italy, of course they come together (one bed + forced proximity trope) since Josh actually is the sweetest but also most attractive guy in Italy for that week. Having come home they have to navigate their “relationship or lack thereof and try to figure out what they mean to each other outside of a steamy holiday romance. The ending is really sweet, a bit too tacky for my taste, but okay. It’s a rather realistic story, deals with mental health issues and childhood drama as well as family issues. The spice is spicy and Josh likes to take control in the bedroom.
All in all a pleasant read! You don’t need to read the previous novel to understand the plot.
ARC Review - 4⭐️ Really enjoyed this. Second chance romance, ‘enemies to lovers. Loved the relationships between Layla and Josh and it was so refreshing to see a man who communicates so well and effectively. There’s also a little bit of found family in here which is one of my favourite tropes. Looking forward to reading more of Nicole’s books. It was a perfect summer read. Sweet, funny, spicy and romantic. Thank you Love Notes PR and Nicole Baker for this ARC ❤️
Overall sweet, spicy second chance romance. This is a dual POV and I loved that! Hearing the thoughts of both characters really does help understand motivations so much better. The stick on this romance trip together in Italy was super fun because of it allowing them to have to deal with their past. Has they go through this vacation it’s clear the chemistry and love is still very much there.
One thing I wasn’t so into was the language during some of the banter and little arguments. To me sounded a bit juvenile but other than that this was a n enjoyable story! Thank you to Love Notes PR for the opportunity to read this!
I was really lucky to receive an arc. It was so good. I haven't read a brothers best friend hoilday romance, but I loved it. It was so well written. The characters were always supposed to be together, but they let ego and life get in their way. It was fantastic that the book doesn't just follow there. hoilday but goes into their lives at home! If you want a fun and fluffy read, this is a great book for that!
Overall this book was really good but I felt it was dragging in places. The smut scenes were well written and you can’t help but fall head over heels for Layla and Josh!
Nicole never misses! I’m so happy I was able to ARC read this one as I really do love Nicole’s books! This one didn’t disappoint, the love shared and the spicy scenes were perfectly paired with the sweet feel good storyline 🥰 and the ending had me feeling all kind of feels!! Such a feel good book and I already want to read it again!!
I love this 📖. like, I want to forget the plot, so I can read it all over again like first time. the romance 🥰 between them, spicy scenes, that steamy feeling. fireworks 💥. supportive family! mostly of all - brothers that DON'T want to kill Josh because he loves their sister! need to go read all of Nicole's books 📖.
Nicole Baker's The First Time is a delightful blend of the brother’s best friend, enemies to lovers, and second chance romance tropes, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Italian countryside. With a premise that promises tension, drama, and passion, this novel delivers a heartfelt story that keeps you engaged from start to finish.
The story follows Layla Williams, a dedicated restaurant owner who reluctantly agrees to take a much-needed vacation. The promise of a week in the idyllic Italian mountains with her best friend is abruptly shattered when her friend cancels last minute. Instead of relaxation, Layla finds herself stuck with her brother’s infuriating best friend, Josh—someone with whom she shares a tumultuous past. The initial animosity between Layla and Josh is palpable, and Baker does an excellent job of portraying their prickly relationship. The tension is electric, and the banter between them is sharp, witty, and often laugh-out-loud funny.
One of the novel’s strengths is its setting. The Italian mountainside, with its romantic vineyards, quaint markets, and breathtaking landscapes, serves as the perfect backdrop for the simmering romance. The vivid descriptions transport you to Italy, making you almost taste the wine and feel the sun on your skin. It’s in these settings that Layla and Josh’s relationship begins to evolve, their icy demeanor slowly melting under the Italian sun.
The progression from enemies to something more is handled with care and precision. The shift in their relationship feels natural and unforced, with enough tension and build-up to keep readers invested. The “one bed trope is executed brilliantly, adding another layer of forced proximity that heightens the emotional stakes. As they navigate their grudges, misunderstandings, and growing attraction, you can’t help but root for them to finally confront their feelings.
Layla is a strong, relatable protagonist—her dedication to her restaurant and her independence are admirable, and her vulnerability makes her all the more endearing. Josh, on the other hand, is the classic charming but frustrating hero who slowly reveals deeper layers as the story progresses. Their chemistry is undeniable, and their journey from bitter enemies to lovers is both satisfying and emotionally resonant.
If there’s a minor critique, it’s that some aspects of their past could have been explored more deeply, giving more insight into why their relationship was so strained to begin with. However, this doesn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the story.
The First Time is a perfect read for fans of romance who enjoy seeing sparks fly, tension build, and characters grow. Nicole Baker has crafted a charming and heartwarming story that proves love can bloom in even the most unexpected places. Whether you’re a fan of enemies to lovers or just looking for a romantic escape to Italy, this book is sure to satisfy.
This series is so sweet, it's like book candy. I liked Josh and Layla back in Asher and Charlotte’s story, and when I found out they were getting their own book, I was ready. And yes, we still get glimpses of Asher and Charlotte’s relationship too, which I like too!
Layla’s been running her restaurant for three years and hasn’t taken a single vacation. So, when she and Charlotte (her best friend and future sister-in-law) planned an elaborate girls' trip to Italy, it was overdue. But, surprise! Charlotte finds out she's pregnant and gets hit with the kind of morning sickness that lasts all day long. Charlotte knows she'd be miserable on the trip and wouldn’t want to ruin Layla’s much-needed getaway. So, naturally, she and Asher go through their list of friends the night before Italy, desperate to find a replacement travel buddy. Enter Josh, Asher’s best friend and Layla’s childhood crush-turned-"enemy." Of course, he's the only one who can drop everything and jet off to Italy. Layla has no clue until she’s at the airport, and let’s just say things are awkward.
Josh has been secretly in love with Layla for years (cue the collective swoon) and is determined to make this trip unforgettable for her. He knows how hard she's worked and how much she needs this escape. They end up sharing a suite with a king-size bed, and well, things eventually get steamy, as they do. Let’s just say, I fell in love with Josh in Italy, too!
The chemistry between these two is there. They’re sweet, fiery, and just the perfect match. By the halfway point, I was convinced this story could wrap up with a big ol bow right there. But then I glanced at my Kindle and realized there were still two hours left. Cue dread. We all know what that means—the third act breakup looms. I was like, “Do we really need drama right now? Can’t we just bask in the happiness for once? But the drama does come.
Thankfully, the third act breakup was short-lived and relatively painless. Why do I always stress over these things when I know the HEA is inevitable? I was still holding my breath like it was the first time I'd ever read a romance.
While there wasn’t a full-blown breakup, the miscommunication was enough to give me those classic angst-filled moments. I absolutely love the family dynamics woven throughout with Asher and Laylas brothers. It looks like we’ll be getting a book for each of them. I can’t wait!
Final thoughts: I adored Josh, loved Layla, and of course, I’m a sucker for a happily-ever-after!
This is a brother's best friend, second chance, forced proximity romance! All the tropes I eat right up!!
Layla is a dedicated, hard-working restaurant owner who desperately needs a break and some R & R! Josh is Layla's brother's best friend...and Josh and Layla have history! A brief history, but a history nonetheless...a secret history!! They have unfinished business.....they both have unresolved feelings!
Layla and her best friend Charlotte are meant to be taking a vacation to Italy, but when Charlotte has to pull out at the last minute she promises that she will find a replacement so Layla can still get to go. In steps Asher, Layla's brother and Charlotte's husband! He asks Josh if he can help him out and accompany Layla on her trip...Josh agrees but the interesting part - Layla doesn't know that it's Josh who will be taking Charlotte's place! Needless to say, Layla is beyond furious when Josh turns up at the airport.
They bicker, they have banter, they have weird tension...this escalates when they get to Italy only to realise they have to share a room and yep, you guessed it! There's only one bed....
The more time they spend together, the more they relax around each other and a mutual friendship and respect begins to develop. They still bicker but the underlying sexual tension is hot AF! They open up to each other, with Josh finally admitting the reason for what happened all those years ago. He admits his insecurities and it makes him all the more lovable.
When things started to heat up, they really started to heat up. The scene where she walks in on him in the motel room was so hot!! They way Josh talks to her and the way Layla knows what she wants...thigh clenching spice!!!
I love that Josh calls Layla Freckles, even though she hates it! "F*ck, I'm going to hell for this." he says. "Alright, Freckles. You asked for it."
"If anything, I hated how much I didn't hate you at all."
Thank you to Nicole Baker and Love Notes PR for the ARC in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.
