Radnju ovoga romana, prvotno objavljenoga u nastavcima u »Ilustrovanom listu« (1914. � 1916.), Zagorka smješta na sam početak 19. stoljeća; u doba vladavine cara Franje I. (1768 � 1835.) i Napoleonovih osvajanja. U burna politička događanja upletena je i Ksenija, pastorka ministra policije carskoga dvora... Pustolovine hrvatskih demokrata i njihove špijunke Ksenije smještene su u Zagrebu, Pešti i, dakako, na carskome dvoru u Beču. Znalci Zagorkina opusa Republikance drže jednim od najuspjelijih autoričinih romana.

Marija Jurić Zagorka
98books302followersMarija Jurić Zagorka was a Croatian journalist, novelist and dramatist, the first female journalist and second in the list of most popular Croatian writers of all time (by the 2005 poll compiled by Vjesnik, a Zagreb daily newspaper). Many of her works have been adapted to film.
She was born in the village of Negovec near Vrbovec, to a well-standing family, which allowed her a good education, but in spite of her talent and many gifts, her parents decided to end her education early and, soon after leaving school, married her off to a man whom she barely knew, a Hungarian railway clerk 18 years her senior. The marriage ended abruptly with her escape from the house, first to Sremska Mitrovica and then to Zagreb, due to her husband's and mother-in-law's abuse.
It was in Zagreb that she began her career as a journalist, which was a highly unusual career for a woman in those days, and because of that, she was frowned upon, humiliated and prejudiced against her entire life. She was forced to write anonymously, under pseudonyms that hid her gender, and hide herself at work so nobody would notice there was a woman writing for (and later running) a newspaper. This didn't stop her from being politically involved, fighting against the Germanization and Magyarization of Croatia, and fighting for the rights of women, which caused her considerable problems in life, both professionally and privately.
Urged by Bishop Strossmayer, Zagorka began writing historic novels, usually set in 16th, 17th and 18th century Croatia. She instantly became popular amongst the people, who endearingly called her "The Fairy of Zagorje" (upon publishing ) and "Queen of Croatians" (upon publishing ). The critics and her colleagues, however, constantly put her down, ridiculed her work, slurred her as a person and as a writer, and deliberately ignored her in literary magazines and almanacs. Still, she kept on writing and published her works as a part of her newspaper so they would be affordable to the general public, adapted her own and the works of August Šenoa for theater, ran two magazines "Ženski list" (1925- 1938) and "Hrvatica" (1938-1940) addressed to the female public, and with her young female colleagues formed the Society of Croatian Female Writers.
Upon the formation of Independent State of Croatia, the magazine "Hrvatica" was forcibly canceled and her entire estate is taken from her, leaving her without means to support herself. Desperate, Zagorka attempted suicide, but luckily survived. Living in Zagreb, she saw the end of WWII thanks to the financial help and care of her loyal public. Despite her age and weak health, she continued fighting for the rights of women, even though it earned her the ridicule and animosity of her male colleagues, who repeatedly called her "a madwoman" and "mannish old hag", until the day of her death.
None of her novels have been translated into English, but two are available in German: and . 11 of her novels, published in Croatian, are found in the Library of Congress. The exact number of the novels she has written is unknown, but it is presumed that she wrote around 35, some of which are lost forever.

Roman je izvrstan. Po kompoziciji odudara od ostalih Zagorkinih povijesnih romana, a radnja se zbiva na prijelomu 19. stoljeća. Uz puno intriga, kriminala, i neizostavnu ljubavnu fabulu, u ovoj knjizi ima puno politike, što je još dodatni plus. Dojmljivih likova, zapleta i napetosti na ovih 900+ stranica ne fali :D

Republikanci nastaju netom što je Marija Jurić Zagorka postigla, do dan danas, nezapamćen uspjeh svog ciklusa romana o Gričkoj vještici. I u ovom romanu, kao i Gričkoj vještici, Zagorka je posegnula u riznicu povijesti i kreirala napetu povijesno-političku priču. Likovi s kojima se susrećemo većinom su postojali, tako da skladno izranjaju iz temeljito proučene povijesne građe, no ona se ipak i ovdje drži obrasca fikcije i fakcije. Stoga, pretresajući galeriju likova, možemo reći kako su car Franjo I., Marija Terezina, maršal Marmont, Josip Kralj i biskup Maksimilijan Vrhovac zbilja povijesno utemeljene ličnosti, no paralelno s njima Zagorka upleće Kseniju Magdalenić i brojne druge koji su plod fikcije. Radnja se odvija na bečkom dvoru cara Franje I., Zagrebu i Budimpešti oslikavajući putove republikanske revolucije. Naime, povijest zbilja bilježi kako su postojale jakobinske tendencije nalik zbivanjima u Francuskoj, a ugušene su u krvi o čemu svjedoči kraj druge knjige. Na samom kraju pratimo smaknuće tzv. urotnika Martinovića, Lackovića i ostalih za kojima ostaje sablasna Krvava poljana.
Ipak, i u ovom romanu, Zagorka ne odustaje od uvriježene ljubavne potke kojom se dobrano služila i u Gričkoj vještici. Stoga, za brojne, nezaboravnom paru Nere i Siniše u Republikancima možemo pretpostaviti Kseniju Magdalenić i Goroslava Delivuka. I u ovoj ljubavnoj priči Zagorka se koristi oprobanom tehnikom sukoba zapreka i krajnje realizacije ljubavi. Ipak, treba reći, kako Ksenija kao lik prolazi zanimljivu transformaciju, pa od careve špijunke i korjenite plemkinje postaje snažna zagovornica novih ideja.
Stilistički gledano Zagorka se u Republikancima odmiče od kičastog fabulativnog tkanja koja su obilježavala njena prethodna djela, a pribjegava simetričkoj naraciji. Dakle, za Republikance možemo ustvrditi da su narativno povezaniji s puno manje umetnutih epizoda ,koje su ponekad same sebi svrhom, te izostankom većine sporednih likova koji gomilaju literarnu kulisu. Posebnu pozornost treba usmjeriti i na njena feministička strujanja koje je na svojim leđima iznijela heroina Ksenija (ne zaboravimo npr. motive preoblačenja u muškarca te scenu oslobađanja zarobljenika) jer kao što znamo Zagorka je ipak pisala sama u tada muškom novinarskom svijetu.

Ovaj zaseban roman, objavljen u periodu kada je publika iščekivala nastavak priče vezan uz serijal ''Grička vještica'', je privukao moju pozornost baš kada sam pročitao par Zagorkinih djela (''Roblje'', '''Mala revolucionarka'' i prve tri knjige iz ''Gričke vještice'') do te mjere da sam nabavio i ostale važne romane iz njezina života. Povjesni događaji (manje poznati i hrvatskoj javnosti) u kombinaciji sa romantičnim elementima odišu Šenoinim utjecajem, dok njezin prepoznatljivi stil ostaje netaknut. Pogotovo se to odražava na ženske likove, od kojih je svaki specifičan i imaju svoje priče koje se isprepliču, zajedno sa političkim aspektima i intrigama tog perioda. Stvarne i izmišljene osobe uspjevaju dočarati kako je disala Hrvatska unutar Habsburške Monarhije na prijelazu iz 18. u 19. st. i u jeku društvenih promjena, potaknute revolucijama u Europi i koliki je strah prevladavao među plemićima i kraljevima, pri samoj pomisli kako netko ispod njih ima pravo na slobodu izražavanja. Svakako knjiga koju vrijedi pročitati, ako ste fan Zagorke, povijesti i opširnih romana.
This standalone novel, published in the period when the public was expecting the continuation of the story within ''The Witch of the Grich'', drew my attention exactly after I've read a few other works by Zagorka (''The Slave'', ''A Little Revolutionary'' and the first three books of ''The Witch of the Grich''), to the point that I got the rest of her important novels from her life. The historical events (little known even to the Croatian public) with a combination of romantic elements breath the influence by Senoa, while her recognised style remains intact. That especially considers the female characters, of which everyone is so specific and they have their stories which intertwine, along with political aspects and intrigues of that period. The real and fictional persons are able to conjure up how Croatia breathed within the Habsburg Monarchy in the transitional period from 18th to 19th century and in the echo of social changes, encouraged by the revolutions in Europe how much a fear there was between the nobles and kings, at the very thought of someone below them having the right of free speech. It's definitely a book worth reading, if you're a fan of Zagorka's work, history and lengthy novels.

This book is little different from others authors stories, because of tihs political component, but it's equaly interesting.
