Where Fools Have Tread

Rate this book
Dec:
I’ve never really had much in the way of direction in my life, until I walk into an eerie shop where a strange man charges me more than I should pay for a tarot reading of one card. Next thing I know, I’m graduating school to be a domestic servant and find myself employed by someone else’s weird uncle in the strangest mansion. Everyone is great even if they’re all a little off. Except Thoren. He’s a thorn in my side, and I hate how he treats me like it’s my job to clean up every little thing he drops on the floor. (My ass is not what he’s looking at because what?)

Thoren:
I’ve known since I was eight the path I would take in life. Protecting the world from itself has always been my calling, and I do a damn good job of it. So what if I take my pleasure wherever I can find it? I’ve earned every second of my leisure with the hours, days, and weeks of work I put in on every assignment. If I happen to find pleasure in teasing the new butler well, Dec seems to like it just as much as I do, no matter how often he tries to hide in the cleaning closet. (I wonder if he has a maid costume because yum.)

Where Fools Have Tread is an MM paranormal romance with a human butler who finds his calling serving a household full of paranormal protectors and a gargoyle with resting bitch face who takes delight in teasing him.

Where Fools Have Tread is a standalone MM romance novel as part of the multi-author collaboration Tales from the Tarot. This book is based on the major arcana card The Fool.

DNF 50%

The characters, the plot and the romance are flat and the book gives nothing to hold your interest.
The romance especially is very crass(for lack of a better word),there is no chemistry between Dec and Thoren, there is just lust and more lust.
The most important trait that Dec has is his great ass and trust me it will be brought up every single chapter.
The whole relationship is just Dec having a big ass and Thoren(and all the characters too*rolls my eyes") lusting after it.
And let's not talk about the title of each chapter cause they were just....
The plot is very ridiculous and while it could have been somewhat entertaining the writing is not doing it for me.
I only gave it 2 stars for the dog.

This book started off so good and then just took a nose dive for me.

Gargoyle aliens? Alien dragons? Idk. I had no idea this was going to turn into some intergalactic space drama. I thought I was getting some fun gargoyle/human shenanigans. I was very wrong.

Besides all that, there was some lacking chemistry IMO. And the description of Dec's ass was fairly off putting TBH. It made him sound like a male version of Kim Kardashian.

As I stated initially, there were some good ideas in this that were interesting and cute, but the negatives just far outweighed any positives for me. Was also disappointed that the connection between Dec and Maxime wasn't further discussed.

So far this Tarot series has been a mixed bag. Fingers crossed things improve bc I love the overall concept.

I was so happy to see that this is a part of the Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees universe!! I was prepared for absolute insanity and chaos to unfold and I was not disappointed - there's even a cameo from Darcy (I am waiting patiently for his story!!).

Dec and Thoren are so much calmer than Romily and Fox - there's no murder for starters - but they do have the same strong attraction, although these guys are definitely in denial 😂 I also loved how Thoren and his family make all of their decisions using Tarot readings - I am firmly in my Occult era so this series is so intriguing to me!

The gargoyles are effectively the peacekeepers and protectors of Earth and Humans, so it's a different vibe to the usual mayhem in this story universe, but it's definitely the cutest story so far and I can't wait for the other brothers to get stories in future.

Also, this book goes intergalactic which was an interesting addition to the universe, and introduced a few new species too, plus more backstory on gargoyles. Dec being an intergalactic diplomat had me giggling, especially the way he convinces the invaders to go home 😂

Overall, if you enjoy the chaos vibe of Romily and Co and you want more from that story universe, this is the book for you!

After the loss of his uncle several years prior, Dec is alone and floundering. Everything changes for him though when he stumbles into a magic shop and gets a tarot reading from its kind of creepy owner.

Next thing he knows he's graduating butler school and employed by a very eccentric gentleman and his equally odd nephews, one of which is a huge thorn (get it thorn... Thoren?!) in his side. Dec does his best to keep things professional, but he can't help but be attracted to the massive man who loves to pick on him.

Honestly I've never read a Jennifer Cody book up until today and that's a travesty! I wasn't sure what to expect going into Where Fools Have Tread because of that, but this was silly and fun and a great start to the Tales from the Tarot series. Plus who doesn't love gargoyles and intergalactic shenanigans?!

A bit more bonkers that the kind of story I usually read. I mean, this one has gargoyles and aliens - and come on, there's sexual harrassment there as well with Thoren always ogling Dec's a$$. But the whole gargoyle families are kind of fun to read. And sometimes bonkers are enjoyable. So there.

I absolutely loved going on an adventure with Dec (full name withheld for maximum enjoyment) and Thoren!

It was a delightful return to the Troubleverse with some adorable returning characters (I love me some cute little gargoyles), an interesting plot and the introduction of new characters and lore.

Admittedly I don’t know much but Tarot, but it was enjoyable to read about and I look forward to reading about the rest of the Arcana; in the meantime I definitely recommend starting with this one coming out on the 19th of August!

If you enjoyed the Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees series, then buckle up because this is set in the same universe. This isn't quite as unhinged as that series, but it doesn't lack the same ridiculousness and shenanigans that I loved. Dec is a butler who starts work at the stately home of a rather eccentric family. He catches the eye of Thoren, who notices his.... assets. Spice and hilarity ensue. In the end, it's actually rather sweet. We also get a fun cameo from none other than Darcy. This story has plenty of interesting plot and a little action to balance out the spice and overall craziness. All in all, I had a lot of fun with this.

This one was surprisingly tame. Set in the universe of Mute decrees, a tarot card leads to a new job as a butler. Dec (Deese) was sweet. Darcy popping up was nice. Other than that it was Thoren's attraction to Dec's butt and trying to figure out Dec's name. The roof discovery was awkward. I did like the little ones outing them all. Emotions for the win. Very much focused on Tarot. Thoren's deck was entertaining.

This one was so intriguing! It was so cool to read about gargoyles since I haven't seen them show up as much. Thoren's reluctant attraction was amusing to experience while poor Dec adjusted to the whole concept. I do have to admit that even after seeing how his name is pronounced, my brain still butchered it until like the last 5 chapters. But I thoroughly enjoyed how sweet this story ended up being with Thoren living up to the gargoyle name for a while there.

Another excellent chaos inducing read from Jennifer Cody. We have Dec, whose life has been stagnant since his uncles passing ends up in the Magic Shop that will change the course of his life forever. Thoren, along with his nestmates guard Earth from outside influences, what he doesn't expect is the new butler to change it all. From their first interaction, the desire is undeniable, yet they take their time in letting it happen. And let me tell you once those guards are down, oh boy, you are in for some fun.

This is book one of the TALES FROM THE TAROT multi-author universe. Jennifer did a brillant job in both combining the meaning of the Fools card along with the power of a tarot reading into this story. Mix in a cameo from her MURDER SPREES AND MUTE DECREES series, and you are in for a treat. She keeps up with her chaos theory style of writing along with the joys of paired souls. If the rest of the series lives up to this book, we are in for a great journey.

I want to start off by saying that I did enjoy this story. The characters were cute and fun to read about even the secondary characters.

What made this story hard for me to read is the world that the author has created. Parts of the world building confused me and at times it pulled me out of the story because I just didn’t understand.

I have NOT been good at keeping up with my top author's latest releases...for a while. It's hard keeping up when you just keep adding more authors to the list and keep adding more ARCs to your other list and have to work for a living (boo). Anywho, here's Jennifer Cody's "Where Fools Have Tread." It's set within the Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees series, but its also a part of the multi-author series Tales From The Tarot.

["Dec:

What utter crack! I loooove all of the new characters and lure and possibilities! So many HEAs in progress (and soooo many quirks to find mates for).

And so many silly paranormal fighting fate. Because Thoren was not pleased to discover that he had a mate..at first. After he got to know Dec (rhymes with Reese), he wasn’t sharing.

And neither was Dec. He didn’t have hopes and dreams for the future, just a place to be, and he found a family, a mate, and a home.

PLUS all of the references to Darcy and his future…I’d say poor Darcy, but he secretly wants a mate so

Trigger Warnings: lost, grief, self-harm, disability, self-doubt, and more.

1st person, present tense, dual POV
Major Arcana Card: The Fool
Dec Scion, human, butler to Maxime Staiano
Thoren, karkoyl (gargoyle - one of the 'Trustworthy'), nephew to Maxime Staiano

The story started out pretty cute - the way Dec met The Owner and found his calling was a great way to put these characters on a path to one another. I love the secret/hidden identity trope so the fact that Thoren was a supernatural (or extraterrestrial?) being and Dec got to discover the truth was super fun for me. I thought Thoren's rogue tarot card, The Fool, basically throwing itself at Dec was amusing and that the brothers doing card readings before undertaking missions was an interesting and unique concept, though I wish the meanings had been explained better for those of us utterly unfamiliar with the practice. The secondary characters were lively and distinct. I especially loved Maxime and his position on clothing "being a reflection of your inner divinity".

Unfortunately, this felt like an introduction to a new series about Thoren and his brothers with an over arching story, and contained a lot of small dangling plot points, which as a reader is one of my biggest pet peeves, especially when writing as part of a multi-author collaboration. I was DYING for Maxime and Dec to figure out their connection and for the found family aspect to be played up. The whereabouts of the former butler, Arcan, are never really explained or resolved and I'm sure that's going to be its own book as the groundwork was being laid for a second chance romance with Faulkes (one of the brothers). So many things were hinted at that went nowhere that the main characters and romance kind of got lost. I live for watching characters fall in love, especially despite their best efforts but Thoren and Dec didn't feel natural or satisfying and aside from fate I never felt their draw to one another *le sigh*.

The alien invasion in the last quarter felt like it came out of left field and I have to admit that the world building felt needlessly convoluted. I didn't really have a difficult time understanding it, but it was so complex what with different alien life forms and history that I found myself distracted by it, not sure what would be relevant to the story at hand. I don't know it it would have been easier to follow had I read the Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees books as the author states that this book takes place in that world.

This is my first time reading this author and I'm waffling between 3 and 4 stars but ultimately it failed to deliver what it promised - a standalone paranormal romance - and I feel let down as it wasn't really what I thought it was going to be.

I was given an ARC and voluntarily wrote an honest review.

Ok. I wanted to like this because the idea of a series based on Tarot cards... with such great cover art... really appealed to me.

Sadly, I thought this was pretty bad. First of all, the language completely threw me off. Worlds like "Badonkadonk" seemed completely out of place when dealing with magical creatures...and people who I assumed were in their late 20s and 30s.

And poor Dec. Every time he enters a scene there's a sentence about his ass using a wide variety of annoying adjectives. I mean, frankly, I'm not even sure what kind of a character he is because there's very little remarked upon but his body shape. At once point his boss hints that he may have hired Dec because of his body shape.

As for the other character Thoren, he's so busy throwing cards on the floor to make Dec bend over in front of him... that I'm not sure what kind of character he is either.

Then the sentence that literally made me toss the book in the recycling bin: "Thoren smirks, running his hand down his body from his chesticles to his cum gutters." Not only is this demeaning language, it doesn't even fit! I work at a library and a couple of my colleagues read the offending sentence after retrieving the book from the recycling bin - and they agreed. It's just a series of immature and demeaning language choices. (And they replaced the book in the recycling bin. We can't even put this on our free cart.)

Now, I'm no prude. Hell, I used to teach sex trade workers how to put condoms on using only their mouths. But "chesticles" and "cum gutters"? Come the hell on. Not all throw away language belongs in books. You can look at my reads to see that I'm not shrinking violet when it comes to sexual content. I didn't even get to any actual sex in the book - I couldn't get past the language.

Anyway. That's my review. I bailed at page 112

It's a real shame because I thought this was going to be a good read. Sadly, I don't think I'll be reading any further in this series of books which is probably unfair to the upcoming authors but there you have it.

Usually, I try to come up with a group of people I could recommend a book to even if it's not something the appeals to me... but ... nah.

Jennifer Cody is a new-to-me author, I'm not familiar with their work, so this book was my first time reading a story of theirs. I am definitely a fan of their writing style now, I enjoyed how they described and built the background scenery, as well as the attention to details with the Tarot Cards. I loved that those played such a monumental role throughout this story, and they weren't just mentioned once and then forgotten about, they played a critical role the whole time. I don't think an inanimate object has ever been as much of a focal point as a side character before, but that's what happened with the cheeky Tarot Cards.

What I loved the most was how Jennifer didn't just create two MC's and lackluster side characters. She created backgrounds for each and every character, each person provided an extra element to the story, and she not only had depictions of what all the gargoyle brothers looked like in their human forms, but she also had detailed depictions of what they looked like in their stone form as well. I thought that was a really nice touch, and showed her creativity, as well as her dedication to providing a well rounded story full of characters who all play a part.

The relationship between Dec and Thoren was definitely a slow-burner. They kind of gave off an enemies to lovers vibe during certain parts of the story. Once they both stopped fighting how they felt they realized that they have actually liked each other for quite some time. I liked how their relationship wasn't insta-love or insta-lust, I'm glad Jennifer took the time to let her characters grow and breathe a bit before they jumped into bed together.

Overall, I thought this was a terrific way to start off a new series! I also learned new things about Tarot Cards that I did not know prior to reading this, which I found to be really cool!

I was thoroughly entertained and delighted with this couple and new beginnings.

Rating: 4.5🌈

Jennifer Cody’s new book, Where Fools Have Tread, is featured in the new multi author series, Tales From The Tarot.

Situated in the author’s Murder Sprees and Mute Degrees universe with crossover characters, this is an absolutely engaging story that promises to bring the reader additional books about this world and gargoyle guardians.

Cody weaves magic, science fiction, romance and the mystical powers of the Tarot cards into a narrative where a lonely young man of indecision finds his path, his origins, a fated mate, and a family. All with a little magical charm and assistance.

I’m a longtime fan of Cody’s, especially her ability to create beautifully realized characters and then deliver a highly imaginative, engaging storyline for them to explore and journey to their own endpoint, whatever that means.

Here Dec Scion, an aimless young man, still mourning the loss of his uncle who raised him, ends up a butler working for the unusual wealthy Staiano family. Who happen to be guardian gargoyles.

Dec, a great character who continues to reveal depths of personality and strengths of his own, meets Thoren, and the attraction sets off an highly snarky, fun relationship that allows each to learn about each other as it turns into a fated mates relationship.

There’s other gargoyle brothers and uncle, Maxime, who clearly need further exploration and stories. And great housekeeping staff equally well developed and crying for more details.

I was thoroughly entertained and delighted with this couple and new beginnings. I look forward to more novels, both in this series and from Cody.

Love love this cover!

This is a silly, horny and kinda suss entry into the chaotic, OTT Murder Sprees and Mute decrees universe. It has little plot beyond Thoren being inappropriately engrossed by Dec's ass and Dec being cool with sexual harassment—not being hyperbolic; both call it that.

Dec is person-less and adrift after the death of his uncle. He stumbles into a magic shop and is given a tarot card and a business card for butler training. He’s hired by Thoren’s uncle into a home of gargoyles that protect Earth, but Thoren’s main occupation is fighting with his asshole tarot cards for trying to hook him up with Dec (mostly by jumping in front of Dec so he can bend over and Thoren can perv). Dec’s consistent tasks are spending time with the dog and avoiding jumping Thoren.

The secondary characters are basically set dressing. The uncle is flamboyant so stands out. Thoren has six brothers w/no real presence besides Thoren growling at them except Faulkes who is too precious for this world. Honestly, I probably would find this less entertaining had I read it without the affection I have for the main series and a Hellspinner cameo.

However, Dec and Thoren are likeable and fun; they aren’t flat despite their personalities being channeled through their lecherous game. I like the gargoyle characteristics and history and the series' penchant for human(ish) MCs having massive cosmic effects.

4/5. It had some mechanics issues and wonky bits, but overall it was solid and a damn good time.

But, again, it’s me. Hi. I’m the problem, I think.

It’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s that I could tell this tied into another world and I had no clue about any of it, so it made everything else confusing and flat. Even my favourite parts felt off because I just didn’t have the knowledge or the lore to fill in the holes.

I wound up perpetually frustrated with the lack of everything I needed to give the whole thing depth and dimension. Which, to me sucked so much because the characters, the story, the little quirks, and the parts of world building that were given were so great. Every time a new piece was added, I got more and more pissed off that I didn’t have the whole puzzle to add them to.

And that was my issue I guess. It doesn’t stand alone, and while I don’t mind that in anthologies, I have discovered that I definitely mind it in a series of books like this one. I can get over it in a short story as long as it’s enjoyable enough, but in a full book it isn’t something my brain will let me fuck with.

On the plus side, I absolutely loved the tie in to the theme of the series, and I loved the nod to rabbit shifters, and I definitely want to check out the parent material because I loved the characters and the lore/world building I read. It did its job regarding being a reader magnet for sure.

Never once did I think I would be so transfixed by space peen and weird galactic shenanigans, but here we are 🤷‍♀

Dec and Thoren’s romance is a tale we’ve all heard before in the form of fated mates, but it’s how they got there that makes this story unique. Dec, as lonely and depresso as he is, has quite the witty and charming personality. And Thoren, well, he’s just transfixed by Dec’s big butt energy 👀

“𝓘’ 𝓰𝓸𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓽𝓸 𝓫𝓮 𝓪 𝓶𝓸𝓷𝓼𝓽𝓮𝓻 𝓯*𝓬𝓴𝓮𝓻, 𝓣𝓱𝓸𝓻𝓮𝓷. 𝓨𝓸𝓾’𝓻 𝓷𝓸𝓽 𝓰𝓸𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓽𝓸 𝓽𝓪𝓴𝓮 𝓽𝓱𝓲𝓼 𝓪𝔀𝓪𝔂 𝓯𝓻𝓸𝓶 𝓶𝓮, 𝓪𝓻𝓮 𝔂𝓸𝓾?

They’re brought together by fate and a potentially shady tarot card, Dec landing a job working for Thoren’s kooky uncle as a butler. Chaos ensues, and before you know it, Dec is getting frisky with Thoren and saving the world from some very unintelligent space dragons 🐉

Some chunks of the book could have been a bit more fleshed out, but the humor and banter are the heroes in this one.

This book was so much fun! It is a light-hearted read with the kind of humor I have come to expect from Jennifer Cody, which is highly enjoyable in my opinion.

This book is in the same universe as the Mute Decrees series with a cameo by one of those characters. I think having read that series before this made it easier to follow along with this story, but I also think this can be read as a standalone.

Thoren is from a family of gargoyles tasked with protecting Earth and Dec is their newly hired butler who longs to be important to someone. He finally finds his place with Thoren's family, but it isn't what he expects and all the fun chaos ensues.

One of my favorite parts of this story is the role of the Tarot cards. I have no familiarity with Tarot at all, and I found the use of the decks fascinating. Thoren and co use their own decks to help them make decisions and it's really interesting how they interpreted their readings. Along with the main plot is the fun little mystery of Dec's full name and Thoren's desperation to know what it is.

The romance was sweet, all of the characters are loveable, and I had so much fun reading. I can't wait to see what the other authors in this series come up with and I sincerely hope that Jennifer writes additional books for Thoren's family members because I am invested in these guys now!

Dec has always felt alone even now that his uncle is gone. He’s always been alone and no one wants him. Until one day he goes into the magic shop and draws the fools card, and now he’s a Butler for the guardians. Thoren has been a guardian for a long time. He takes his pleasure and teasing his new Butler by dropping his deck of cards on the floor for him to pick up. He also is not looking for a relationship because he wants his mate. He kept on pulling out the fools card in his deck. The two together are polar opposites grumpy sunshine. They have amazing chemistry and know what they want from each other. What I like about these two are how they tease, and how they sass each other. I also like the fact that they are supportive for each other. What I like about Thoren is his strong loving bond with his family. Also, how he trusses his deck of cards to ensure that he has a safe and good future. For Dec character I like that he knows there’s somebody out there for him, to accept all of him. Also like that he can trust and not be alone now that he has a family. What I think is funny as how Dec tries to hide from Thoren in the broom closet. Because he gets himself flustered, he doesn’t know what to do. Altogether this family is great, loving and supportive of on each. I’m happy that they both got what they wanted.

Unlike the many other Jennifer Cody books that I've read in the past, this time I only connected to the MCs on a very superficial level, which really bummed me out. 🙁

But then, things took a real nosedive, considering my own reading tastes:

I can’t wait to see what Thoren thinks about the blue lace bralette and thong set I put on. He loved the gray lace panties so much he fucked me with them on. Although he’s going to have to give me a stipend for underwear if he keeps destroying them; it’s not like pretty panties for men are cheap and easy to come by.

NOPE.

But even before that, there was talk of "river clay" , which... DOUBLE NOPE.

And the "big ass" comments gave me The Ick and made me feel like I really needed to take a hot shower.

Overall, I wish I would've skipped this one and I'd rate it at around 2 stars.

As a Gay man, I tend to be cautiously optimistic when I see a Gay male romance novel, with sexual elements, written by a woman.

As a professional Psychic Reader, reading a book series based on the Major Arcana of the Tarot was a must.

"Where Fools Have Tread," by Jennifer Cody is a series of novels based on the Major Arcana of the Tarot. For the record, I have decided not to read them in the order in which they were published; I AM reading them in the order they appear in the Major Arcana. The Fool Card is Key 0, the Magician Card is Key One, etc.

My softcover copy has 232 pages, including end pages.

Dec (rhymes with Reece) decides he needs a new direction in his life. After going to a Metaphysical supply store, buying some books, and having a Tarot Reading, he decides to become a butler. After he graduates, he is quickly assigned and employed at an estate.

Once he gets assigned, he soon discovers the uniqueness of the other members of the household.

This book is an unexpected love story, with intrigue, plot twists and lots of surprises.

I enjoyed this book very much, and look forward to exploring the "Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees" universe of books, in addition to the other novels in the "Tales From the Tarot" Series.

ARC

This story is part of the Tales From The Tarot Anthology.

I was so excited to start these series of short stories cause it’s definitely been a while since I’ve read some quality PNR and monster romances and I kinda missed them😂

Poor little guy Dec, finding himself all alone on the world and with a sting of bad luck behind him, finds himself walking into a magic shop where he gets a reading and a specific card describing his situation, The Fool.
The Owner of the shop tells him to find his purpose and keep looking, and gives him a business card for a school for butlers.
Finishing his studies, he gets hired by Maxime, a weird kind of guy who he immediately vibes with.
Here he finally finds Thoren, one of Maxime’s nephews, a guardian, a Trustworthy, a gargoyle😏

Things start getting fun when Thoren decides that teasing Dec does actually make him feel something🫠 and I guess Dec also doesn’t disapprove😂

These two were fun, you get some aliens, a new order of things, cheeky tarot cards, solar system missions and all the classic “you’re mine and “touch him and I’ll rip your wings off that we all know and love😏 (and also some really cute panties🥵)
