A hidden cove. A tangle of lies. A deeply buried secret.
When a young woman’s body is found at a cave entrance by the pretty fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay, DCI Tom Raven is called to investigate. A trail of footprints leads from the body on the shore to the nearby youth hostel. But the killer’s identity is far from clear as the picturesque façade of Robin Hood’s Bay conceals more than it reveals.
Meanwhile, Raven has been given a tantalising clue to the truth behind his mother’s death at the hands of a hit-and-run driver over thirty years ago. As he works to untangle the facts, he discovers a secret far darker than anything he could have imagined and must battle the inner demons that threaten to destroy him and everything he holds dear.

The latest novel from the latest series by these authors went straight onto the 'must have' list.
This series is all about DCI Tom Raven after his move from the Met to the north east coast town of Scarborough . In the previous books not only have we learnt all about him weÌý feel we know the members of the team well too.
As much as I have enjoyed reading all the works by the authors, I did think that the opening chapter here was veryÌý typical. Girl on dark path at night gets klled. How many times has that been an opening?
However, apart from that I have no complaints. Strands of this central story link to others and soon there is a lot happening.
As we remembered from the last book's cliffhanger, Tom has received a clue to the car that killed his mother in a hit and run some 20 years ago. He and Becca now start to follow this up in their off duty moments but there is another aspect of his early life that raises its head and worries him. Becca also has her own emergency to deal with..
Did I get the girl's killer? Of course not but really with so much else going on, it didn't seem to bother me. Then at the end, out of the blue, the cliffhanger to the next. Can't wait.
Even with the unoriginal opening and a slight 'but would he really do that' question, it was still a great read.
I don't know if the authors ever read these comments but if they do, I would be really interested to know, which actor alive or dead, would they choose to play Raven, based on looks alone.
Excellent. The lack of evidence at the beginning of the investigation was a frustrating for me as it must be for police. This was so well portrayed I wondered how the story was going to unfold. As it progressed more and more information came to light but like an unmade jigsaw I wondered how three separate story lines would develop. The final third of the book developed all of these threads with exciting writing. Congratulations on keeping Tom Raven and his team’s story-lines as fresh now as when I started to read this series.
Another very good story with the geography of Robin Hood’s Bay and area so well described. The sea and beach add to the atmosphere along with themes of smuggling and struggle. Raven is agitated and tense in this one. Becca plays a big role .. hopefully a twist to that is on its way .. I’d prefer not what this story is pointing to though.. the tormented Capstick family of Anna versus Connor and the Hepworths have a tinge of Montague vs Capulets .. overall a satisfying read leaving us wondering what next for Raven now he’s had some questions answered.

Toucans are among the noisiest of forest birds; their repertoire includes loud barks, bugling calls, and harsh croaks. Larger species perch high in the canopy. They use their beak to reach food far out on branches or deep into tree cavities. Finding and catching food is aided by a toucan’s long tongue, which can measure up to 5.9 inches. They are friendly and playful, if you have been searching for a dream bird’s then Toucan can be a great companion for you. exoticcrittersshop.com
*A gripping and atmospheric mystery that keeps you hooked from start to finish. DCI Tom Raven is a compelling lead, balancing a chilling murder investigation with his own haunting past. The setting of Robin Hood’s Bay adds a moody, immersive backdrop, while the twists and secrets unravel in a truly satisfying way. Perfect for fans of suspenseful crime fiction!*
Love this series. I couldn’t put this one down. It has lots of twisties in it and Raven as always relentless but fascinating. But we also see some breaking of his hard shell. A great story and mystery. I didn’t solve it right til the end when he did. Highly recommend.
I have had three Yorkshire terriers. I currently have a 12 yr old named Stella, my first girl. She is stubborn and craves attention. Sounds like a true Scottish gal! So do I love Scottish mysteries because they tend to be so dramatic and dark or is it because of these Yorkshire Puppies?? It is just a mystery to me....
Murder mystery investigations from today and 20+ years ago taken on at the same time
A very good addition to this series. Raven and Becca are a close team, with Becca reigning in Raven’s fury. The team take on multiple parallel crime investigations and the backstories and plot twists to keep everyone guessing the perpetrator of the murder.
Kind of a downer to start with good people having problems. Must admit I had problems staying with all the negative vibes. As pieces fell in place, there were several pages that produced a few hoots and a few "I did see that coming" moments. It was all tied in a neat bow. Fantastic writing and great twist and turns.
I've really enjoyed this series so far. The main character, Tom Raven, is, of course, a flawed detective. (Aren't they all?) I'm convinced I know the other members of his team in real life. The solution to the mystery is not apparent until very near the end of the book, which is gratifying.
I'll definitely read the next one when it comes out.
Another superbly conceived mystery featuring the tortured detective, Tom Raven. Smuggling, two deaths that were decades old, and the ties of a crime ring that had acted with impunity, thanks to corruption at the top of North Yorkshire police. This would have received five stars, had the ending not been governed by page limits imposed upon the authors.
This series just keeps on getting better. The more you learn about Raven the more you want to know. It's like everything you know leads to more you don't! He really is an interesting enigma.
This book didn't appeal to me as much as others. It was just okay. One big problem I'm having is it looks like the author is going to put Raven and Becca together. That is very cliche and quite disappointing to me. If it happens it will be the last Raven I read.
All the classic requirements are here, a seaside murder, lots of local characters, stressed detective, mild romance, confusing plot . the author keeps from sagging and sustains the action all the way through.
Always enjoy getting reacquainted with Raven and his crew. Stories are well written with well developed characters and suspensful plot. Highly recommend to fans of police drama.
Yet another exciting book in the DCI Tom Raven series!A real page turner. I really enjoy the descriptions of the area the books are set in as I have visited this part of the country. Each book reveals more about the main characters. I have already pre-ordered the next book and eagerly await it’s publication!
As I was born and bred just seven miles from Scarborough and had an aunt who lived just above where Raven lives, the books are very accurate and bring back a lot of childhood memories. I live this detective ,the characters and plots are good. Really worth four and a half stars.
I very much enjoyed this one. I have read all in the series up to this book and this one was not just finding who did it, but there was a history behind wht event. The villains got their just deserts.
I just love this series. This was rather slow to start and at first not too interesting. However, as the plot continues and more developments arise for our regular cast of characters I changed my opinion hence 4*. I highly recommend this series and to read them in order for the best enjoyment.
Another great story in this series. It was gripping from start to finish. I could not put this down. This series keeps getting better and better. Highly recommend this story and series.
