Rate this book
A charming new chapter book series about a young Orthodox Jewish girl out to discover the truth about all the magical mysteries in her world, perfect for fans of Marya Khan and Zoey and Sassafras

Miriam is the youngest in her family, and she is tired of being treated like the baby. So, using her superior detective skills, she sets out to debunk the fantastical things that people tell gullible kids, starting with the Tooth Fairy.

When her first tooth comes loose, Miriam is determined to prove to her friends and family that the tooth fairy isn’t real. She’s going to lay the perfect trap . . . just as soon as her tooth actually comes out. But despite all her scheming, her investigation doesn’t go to plan. Maybe, just maybe, the tooth fairy is real after all?

I wrote my first story in first grade. The narrator was an ice-cream cone in the process of being eaten. In fourth grade, I wrote my first book, about a girl who gets shipwrecked on a desert island with her faithful and heroic dog (a rip-off of both The Black Stallion and all the Lassie movies, very impressive).

After selling my first story (Temple of Stone) while in high school, I gave in to my mother’s importuning to be practical and majored in biology at Brooklyn College. I then went to Columbia Law School and practiced law for almost two years at a large law firm in New York City. I kept writing and submitting in my spare time, and finally, a mere 15 years after my first short story acceptance, I sold my first novel to Greenwillow Books (HarperCollins).

I live in Silver Spring, Maryland (right outside of Washington, D.C.) with my husband and four children.

I read this book to my daughter for a bedtime story, and the biggest challenge was trying not to laugh out loud and wake her up after she had fallen asleep and I kept reading to myself. It is absolutely the perfect balance of age-appropriate language and themes but also a sophisticated sense of humor that adults (and especially parents of curious children) can really appreciate. Cypess writes children so well, I often felt like I was hearing quotes from my own kids! We're all looking forward to the next volume in this new series.
PS: the illustrations were also excellent!

It's so refreshing to see a chapter book featuring an Orthodox Jewish family being published by a mainstream (not specifically Jewish) publisher. Plus, it has a spunky, imaginative girl as the main character (think of a Jewish Amber Brown), includes kid-friendly art to break up the text, and is genuinely funny. (Special thanks to Abrams for publishing this as a 100-page book to satisfy the annoying teacher requirement that kids must read a book of no less than 100 pages.) Recommended for all kids in the early chapter book reading level. All libraries, too!

This book made me laugh on every page. The illustrations are so charming and Miriam has superior detective skills because of her unique way of viewing the world.

I also learned a few things from this book, like the origin of the Tooth Fairy, some other traditions about baby teeth, and details about how Jewish people celebrate Shabbat. I'm not Jewish, so it was new to me, and very interesting to learn about.

I can't wait to read more about Miriam's adventures!

10/10 STARS!!! I cannot rave about this book enough. It's hysterical! I loved every word, every illustration. Everything! We need more Miriam in this world! This is the first of three books planned, but I hope this becomes a mega series because it's one of the best chapter books on the market today.

This book had me laughing out loud but also had my 5-year-old completely enrapt. A great reading experience for both of us! I highly recommend.
