From the Wizarding Archive: Curated Writing from the World of Harry Potter

Rate this book
If you've ever wondered what happened when Vernon Dursley first met James Potter, wanted to know more about the magical properties of wand cores or pondered whether the Malfoys were always wealthy and firmly anti-Muggle - then From the Wizarding Archive should go straight to the top of your must-read list. Containing 45 articles written by J.K. Rowling for the original Pottermore website, Harry PotterTM fans everywhere are in for a treat.

If there's one thing Harry Potter fans have in common (apart from impeccably good taste), it's questions... so many questions. How do the Hogwarts staff know where every magical child lives, and are mistakes ever made when sending out admittance letters? Why don't wizards just use phones? From the history of wizarding schools to background on magical transportation - this is a veritable treasure trove of answers.

With editorial writing linking and exploring the articles in greater depth than ever before, plus an exclusive foreword by Evanna Lynch, this is essential reading for any Harry Potter aficionado.

These articles were originally featured on Pottermore and are still free, and available to read in English, on the official Wizarding World website.

This eBook is available as two separate volumes or as a combined edition. The articles in Volume 2 were previously published as three Pottermore Presents eBooks. If you already own those, you might prefer to read this edition, From the Wizarding Archive (Volume 1), instead of the combined eBook.

Pottermore Limited will be donating author royalties to the Lumos Foundation on behalf of J.K. Rowling, expected to be equivalent to a minimum of £1 (or the local currency equivalent) for each copy of From the Wizarding Archive sold.

The Lumos Foundation is a registered charity in England and Wales with charity number 1112575.

Although she writes under the pen name J.K. Rowling, pronounced like rolling, her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply Joanne Rowling. Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she chose K as the second initial of her pen name, from her paternal grandmother Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling. She calls herself Jo and has said, "No one ever called me 'Joanne' when I was young, unless they were angry." Following her marriage, she has sometimes used the name Joanne Murray when conducting personal business. During the Leveson Inquiry she gave evidence under the name of Joanne Kathleen Rowling. In a 2012 interview, Rowling noted that she no longer cared that people pronounced her name incorrectly.

Rowling was born to Peter James Rowling, a Rolls-Royce aircraft engineer, and Anne Rowling (née Volant), on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Bristol. Her mother Anne was half-French and half-Scottish. Her parents first met on a train departing from King's Cross Station bound for Arbroath in 1964. They married on 14 March 1965. Her mother's maternal grandfather, Dugald Campbell, was born in Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Her mother's paternal grandfather, Louis Volant, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery in defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte during the First World War.

Rowling's sister Dianne was born at their home when Rowling was 23 months old. The family moved to the nearby village Winterbourne when Rowling was four. She attended St Michael's Primary School, a school founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More. Her headmaster at St Michael's, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

As a child, Rowling often wrote fantasy stories, which she would usually then read to her sister. She recalls that: "I can still remember me telling her a story in which she fell down a rabbit hole and was fed strawberries by the rabbit family inside it. Certainly the first story I ever wrote down (when I was five or six) was about a rabbit called Rabbit. He got the measles and was visited by his friends, including a giant bee called Miss Bee." At the age of nine, Rowling moved to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, close to Chepstow, Wales. When she was a young teenager, her great aunt, who Rowling said "taught classics and approved of a thirst for knowledge, even of a questionable kind," gave her a very old copy of Jessica Mitford's autobiography, Hons and Rebels. Mitford became Rowling's heroine, and Rowling subsequently read all of her books.

Rowling has said of her teenage years, in an interview with The New Yorker, "I wasn’t particularly happy. I think it’s a dreadful time of life." She had a difficult homelife; her mother was ill and she had a difficult relationship with her father (she is no longer on speaking terms with him). She attended secondary school at Wyedean School and College, where her mother had worked as a technician in the science department. Rowling said of her adolescence, "Hermione [a bookish, know-it-all Harry Potter character] is loosely based on me. She's a caricature of me when I was eleven, which I'm not particularly proud of." Steve Eddy, who taught Rowling English when she first arrived, remembers her as "not exceptional" but "one of a group of girls who were bright, and quite good at English." Sean Harris, her best friend in the Upper Sixth owned a turquoise Ford Anglia, which she says inspired the one in her books.

Yellow galore

Elizabeth Bennett's favorite color was yellow. This fact appears nowhere in . We know it because mentioned it to her friends and family. That Lizzie's favorite color is yellow is not in itself important -- but it *is* important that she had a favorite color. I suspect that most great fiction writers do this: they imagine their characters more deeply than is strictly necessary for the story. And you can feel it when you read; you feel these characters as more real because there is more of them than appears on the page. did this. She wrote pages and pages and pages of notes of background on the wizarding world and the characters of the Harry Potter books. collects some of that material.

Cards on the table: I'm a Potter fan. I am not the most rabid of Potter fans -- the most rabid Potter fans are almost unimaginably enthusiastic. However, I have read all the books at least three times and I have seen the entire movie series twice. And I think they're great literature. If you react to that claim with scorn -- if you don't know Hermione Granger from Mamie Eisenhower, this book is not for you.

If, however, you're a fan, then you will find it fun. You learn all kinds of things, such as the story of the Dursleys, what Garrick Ollivander (I didn't know his first name was Garrick) had to say about wands, and so on. The audiobook is read by , , and . , who played Luna Lovegood in the films, is about as rabid a fan as you'll find anywhere, and her enthusiasm is a pleasure to listen to.

There is a second volume, and I definitely plan to listen to it.

Just a delight for someone who has so missed authentic writing from Harry’s world. I listened to the audiobook and adored Evana Lynch’s contributions (because I love her), though all the readers were perfect. I look forward to volume 2

An argument could be made that this is entirely nostalgia bait but it's effective at least.

This book really makes you crave more stories from this universe, not necessarily anything to do with Potter but give me spin offs, give me a new series set in the past, give me a story about Oras tracking a magical serial killer or something. I enjoyed this thoroughly but I'm walking away with blue balls...
I cant think of another way to phase it. Wizarding blue balls.

Overall if you like the books/films/universe you'll lap this up.

If you’ve scoured Pottermore and the HP Wiki like I have then hardly any of this will feel new. However for those who haven’t (probably the good majority) there are some really cool backstories and details about the Wizarding World that you might find enjoyable.

A lovely trip down memory lane. I hadn’t realise how much I had forgotten about the Harry Potter Universe - some bits I never knew too. The opening was very nostalgic as I was one of those children that spent hours clicking around to on JK’s website trying to find new material or clues. Overall fab!

As a Potterhead, I’ll always give anything related to Harry Potter five stars. It brings back great memories of the stories I’ve read on Pottermore and makes me want to re-read all the Harry Potter books again. 🪄

Audio book. Not very well performed and with some odd background effects - unsure if they were deliberate or just recording interference. So overall disappointing although some of the information was interesting. Made me want to reread Harry Potter.

Nothing new

As someone who joined pottermore when it started i have read all of this before. There is absolutely nothing new written in this book so while it is interesting to read, if you were on the website before, i wouldn't bother buying this book

From the Wizarding Archive (Volume 1)
Another beautifully done cover -art-. I have to give credit to the illustrator for these issues! They did an amazing job! Who-ever did these I need get to work for me! Again, this was fun and informative! I learned more than I knew about the characters. After reading about Olivander’s wands, I actually logged back into Pottermore after YEARS of being MIA to look for the kind of wand it had given me. I was sorted into Ravenclaw (of course) and given an Alder wood want with a unicorn core. It was described with a swishy flexibility. My Patronus is a boar. I don’t think I ever really agreed with that or saw how but oh well I guess there’s no changing it. Although if we go by this book a Patronus can change. I’d think it would have been a wolf (which I’ve seen off and on in dreams).

This one felt a little longer, but that’s because the volume I had was one and two. I read Volume 2 first and then when it got to the part in Volume 1 when it starting to talk about the Hogwarts train, (and started to repeat) I realized it was a combination issue. So, just read Volume 1-2 together. You don’t have to read them separately like I did.

I also learned a little more about such characters like Celine Warbeck and Gilderoy Lockheart’s background history. That really is the best part of these volumes. It gets so in depth with the characters! I wish there would have been a (legal) encyclopedia published but there is by far the closest and best thing to that!

From the Wizarding Archive is just what it says it is: a book with articles from Pottermore written by J.K. Rowling, all narrated by a few fantastic voice actors. The narration is woven together by Evanna Lynch, the actress who played Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter movies. I always liked the way she portrayed Luna (I even had a little crush), and she does a great job with the narration. She really elevates the book, though can you even call this a book?

This book is pure nostalgia bait, and it’s not ashamed to be that. Let’s be real: if you’re not a Potter fan, why in the world would you read (or listen to, as in my case) this book?

If you're a die-hard fan, most of the information in this book is probably already common knowledge, though the way it's told makes it worthwhile to listen to. You can find every article online for free, either on Pottermore or on various wikis. So if you’re tight on cash, you could read it that way. But if you want to buff up your Potter collection, then this book is worth considering. It's not a must-read, even for fans, but it's certainly not a bad way to spend a few hours.

This was such a fun listen! The background music made the scenes come to life, the voice actors did a great job playing on the likeness of some familiar characters, and you get 8 hours of additional Wizarding World content! Some of this stuff was so interesting to learn about, especially the pasts of some particular people who all had large impacts. Their pasts all explained some pretty key things about what they chose to do in their futures.
This book was great to break up the pattern of books I was falling into recently, I really craved and needed something that was easy listening compared to a 30-40+ chapter novel that has a complex plot. I already know Harry Potter's story (maybe I'll finish the books in the next 6 months), so this felt like something where I could turn it on and turn my brain off.

4 stars. Listened to this audiobook via Audible 🎧

Listening to “From the Wizarding Archive was wonderful It felt like reconnecting with an old friend. Luna Lovegood aka Evanna Lynch’s narration was especially wonderful; you can hear her genuine love for the Harry Potter universe in every word she speaks. The other narrators were equally engaging, and they brought so much life and warmth to the experience.

Even though much of the information was familiar to me, it didn’t take away from how nostalgic and heartwarming it felt to hear these details again. In fact, the familiarity made it even more special, like a trip down memory lane to one of the most magical parts of my childhood. I’ve always adored learning more about the wizarding world and this audiobook was the perfect way to dive back in. I think it’s time for another annual re-read of the HP series!

Fun!! Loved hearing interesting Harry Potter tidbits that didn’t make it into the book. JK Rowling is a MASTER at world building- and listening to this helps me realize it doesn’t just happen by accident. She creates a world so detailed it really resembles real life (if owls deliver the post). Ever wonder where the Malfloys got their money? What Gilderoy Lockhart was like as a boy? In this book you can dive deep into the wand lore Ollivander made mention of. Or why in the heck toads are approved magical pets to bring to school (how utterly useless!) Loved it. That being said, if you don’t love Harry Potter, you’ll hate this book. Top notch info for me!

3.5-4*

I’ve always loved Harry Potter but I was a bit old to spend a huge amount of time on Pottermore when it came out, so I really enjoyed this collection of articles and all the behind the scenes tidbits that they included. It’s great to actually learn something new about the series! I think I’d have liked a lot more character backgrounds in this book - these were the best part for me. The section on wands was a little dull in comparison. On the whole though, enjoyable and didn’t take long to get through at all!

This was everything I wanted it to be - a friendly pickup and put down, or pleasant read-right-through for hours, during the ebb and flow of busy life kind of book. A dialog of conversation preceded and guided each chapter of Harry Potter facts, which made what would have otherwise felt like reading non-stop Wikipedia pages of J.K. Rowling’s mind on the matter feel more like a story being presented. Extra pizazz was even given in the audiobook (narrated by the actress who plays Luna Lovegood) which had background noises and music to immerse you even further.

It's hard to rate this one, particularly because I can't decide where it belongs. I had thought this book was going to be short stories or bonus scenes we've never read, but it turned out to be more of an encyclopedia of various Wizarding World things. It was cool to read, I felt like I was sitting in the authors attic reading from a chest of papers that hadn't been touched in a while. It's rare an HP fan gets to open new material! A nice, short treat. ⚡️

From The Wizarding Archive was an interesting listen! JK has such a head for creativity. She literally created an entire world surrounding Harry Potter. The side characters have full-blown backstories and the backstories have backstories. 😂 It was so interesting to hear some of those stories. I think the girl who played Luna was one of the narrators. I could verify that but I’m content just thinking it’s true. 😄

I’ll look for the second archive and get it when it’s on sale. 😊
