He was striking in a cold-blooded kind of way, like his beauty was tinged with poison. Unassuming, alluring even.
I brought my eyes up to meet his.
"Fia Riftborne?" The words dripped from his lips like blood from a dagger.
Twenty years after a rebellion branded her an outcast, Fia Riftborne navigates a city rife with prejudice so deep, it's often deadly. But she harbors a secret, one that would paint an even larger target on her back. A hidden power within her is growing, threatening to destroy everything she's built for herself.
Enter the elusive Sidhe General, Laryk Ashford, who is building a unit of powerful wielders within the Guard to face a growing threat. Wraiths of darkness devour the Western border, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake.
When Fia's power erupts, and two daughters of Nobility are seemingly dead, General Ashford offers her a chilling choice: join the Sidhe Guard or face execution.
Because Fia might be the only hope for the Isle's survival.
Torn between surrendering to the chaos or becoming a weapon for those who took everything from her, Fia must confront her growing feelings for the General and face a dark truth that could shatter everything she's ever known.
Bree Grenwich and Parker Lennox are two platonic soulmates who have been nearly inseparable since meeting at 19. Their shared love of fantasy, badass heroines, and steamy romances fueled their dream of co-authoring a novel, which they've finally achieved with their debut, Riftborne. When they're not conjuring worlds filled with female empowerment and swoon-worthy relationships, they’re binge-watching reality TV or obsessing over the last Dungeons and Dragons session. Bree enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, who she claims is indeed a man written by a woman. A true Pisces, Bree finds solace in weekends by the sea or lake, engrossed in a book with music drowning out the world. She also holds a fascination with the paranormal and all things witchy, a love that undeniably creeps into her writing. Parker, on the other hand, splits her time between the Southern US and the beautiful wine-country of Bordeaux, France, where she visits her boyfriend (living proof that romance novels can mirror reality!). An artist at heart, Parker expresses her creativity through graphic design, photography, and delectable culinary adventures, always with a sourdough starter bubbling away in the background. Together, they weave addictive Romantasy novels for the New Adult audience.
Even though I really try not to be that kind of person, I can't help but be swayed to read a book with a nice cover, andgiven this one was so incredibly gorgeous, I just had to pick it up. However, except for the previously mentioned cover and the last 10% of the book, which accounts for the majority of this grade, there wasn't much else to this book. I really wanted to love this; andI suppose it wasn't totally terrible because the ending at least made me want to read the next book, but some of the things could have been done much better.
“Beauty could be deceptive, and it often was. Vipers, after all, distract with shimmering scales before going in for the kill.
˗ˏˋ★‿︵ ˚ ₊⊹ short summary "Riftborne" (by Bree Greenwitch and Parker Lennox) tries to deliver a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers fantasy, but let’s be real—the romance fizzles more than it sizzles. Fia, a magic-wielding outcast, is forced to join a morally murky general’s guard or face death. Cue the political drama, hidden powers, and a “romance subplot that feels more like an awkward side quest. While the world-building and twists keep things interesting, the love story doesn’t quite land (which, I guess, is rather perfect as a set-up for the next book in the typical ACOTAR sort of way). Still, it’s a fun, magic-filled ride with a juicy cliffhanger that might just lure you into the sequel.
˗ˏˋ★‿︵ ˚ ₊⊹ honest thoughts I'll begin by saying that I thought the world-building and the magic system itself were excellent for a first novel. I wasn't too upset by this element, though I could have liked for a somewhat more thorough history and explanation of how this universe truly came to be. Throughout the action, the majority of my questions were essentially addressed, and it also created the ideal mystery for additional development in subsequent novels.
The pronunciation guide and the glossary that includes minor historical details related to the book's fictional world are two things I would want to express my gratitude to the authors for right away. I always appreciate it when writers take the time to provide this extra information since, at least to me, it greatly improves the reading experience.
Now, I think my main problem with this book is that the plot was so easy and repetitious that I was practically skimming portions of the chapters. I realise that the plot development accurately reflects the confusion and monotony it causes to the FMC, but I really needed it to offer something more than sporadic parties, a little training interspersed with occasional in-depth conversations, and completely inappropriate moments of sexual desire for the most dull and uninteresting man to have ever lived since Tamlinin fact, Tamlin was more interesting than this man.
In addition, since I brought up the book's dull MMC, allow me to briefly discuss this novel's romantic elements. What was the point of creating a romance plot if you are going to write it using the most unattractive fantasy man ever? Ever since I first read about Laryk i knew he was not going to be the real deal in this series. However, even for a first love, he was utterly bland and dull. There was absolutely nothing to lust after, so I was taken aback when this girl suddenly began to do so. He was giving absolutely NOTHING for the entire book, and I even found myself simply skipping the smut scene because it was so unnatural and uncalled for. I won't even go into the specifics, but I will say that the MMC consistently gave me the feeling that Fia's power was the only reason he appreciated her. He was only attracted to her because she was a mystery to him.
This is something I said in the opening paragraph, and I will say again: the finale truly rescued the entire book for me. It was the best section of the novel, and I was quite happy to discover that all of my suspicions were true I mean, it was pretty obvious and quite predictable. It was filled with all the intensity that the rest of the book lacked, and it was the ideal cliff-hanger that makes you want to read the second book as well.
˗ˏˋ★‿︵ ˚ ₊⊹ characters Since this is a first book in a series, I am not sure there is a lot I can still say about the characters, but I will try to at least write down some of my own opinions about them.
✴︎ Fia - I am pretty sure she has the potential to become a really interesting and badass FMC, but she wasn't really that interesting in this first book. There wasn't really much progress or development to her either, apart from slightly learning how to control her powers and learning to become a bit more sociable. I couldn't, for the love of God, understand her sudden interest and attraction/love towards General Should-Have-Stayed-A-Side-Character, but I guess the real MMC needed something to be compared with in the future even if the bar is literally in Hell and the standards are under the sea level so far.
✴︎ Laryk - He should have only stayed a side character since he wanted to act like one so much. There is literally NOTHING desirable about this man in the slightest. I am genuinely hoping to not see him more than 5 pages in the next book.
✴︎ Osta, Raine, Nazul, Briar, Maladea - I genuinely have nothing to complain about concerning all the side characters, as they honestly did their job absolutely perfectly.
✴︎ Aether - Now you, sir, is who I am reading the second book for and I am so looking forward to getting to know you better.
˗ˏˋ★‿︵ ˚ ₊⊹ should you read this? For this pretty cover's sake, you should probably give this a chance. You will be met with a rather intriguing world and a quite interesting magical system, and even though the thing that is supposed to be the romance aspect of this novel might not be your cup of tea, at least you will not be made to endure it too much throughout the book. I, at least, have been completely won over by the very last chapters of the book, and I cannot wait to start the second book in the series as soon as possible.
⊹₊┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ✿ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈₊ pre-reading started 07-Ѳ-2025 I am begging on my knees for this to be good because this cover is just so insanely pretty!!!
It took me .1 second to get into this. It’s a war college. it’s got trainer x trainee. It’s got a great found family. This has EVERYTHING you want in a romantasy. AND THAT ENDING.
Loved the FMC. Love Ma, and Osta. I was absolutely absorbed into this world.
I feel like I am going to explode because I need to talk to everyone about this book. I am about to be so insufferable about it. I already can’t wait for book 2. HOLY SHIT.
1.5⭐️ If you enjoyed Fourth Wing, you would probably enjoy this.. I enjoyed neither.
The relationship between Fia and the General was so forced it was laughable. Absolutely zero chemistry, he was gone for like half the book? And then when he did come back they would talk for maybe a minute about training. THAT WAS IT. But when I tell you, this girl was obsessed with a guy who literally seemed to not care less. Nah. Nope. No Thankyou.
I kept waiting for the actual love interest to appear. But no. Also all this guy did was ‘smirk or ‘grin wickedly. That got old so fast omg. It also felt like he was only slightly interested in her because of her power.
The side characters were only there for comic relief and to meet the found family trope.
This was a slow start for me but once it started picking up, I was THERE. The cliffhanger left me with SO many questions??? I should have KNOWN!!!! All in all this was an easy, fun romantasy read!
Wow I haven’t stayed up late reading a book in months! 😍 Riftborne is perfect for fans of North Queen by Nicola Tyche and Red Queen series! It’s not often I find a fantasy romance that is both plot AND character driven!
Fia is a Riftborne; born in Riftdremar and taken as a small child to Sidhe after the uprising. Fia and the other Riftborne are often discriminated and treated horribly, specially by the Sidhe guard. Fans of the Red Queen series will love this book, as we also follow an underdog FMC from a lower cast that discovers she has an incredible power. Fia knows something dark is within her, she tries to hide it as much as she can but an accident results in the fearsome General Laryk discovering her secret. I LOVE morally grey characters and Laryk was from the very beginning a mystery. Throughout the entire book we are never entirely sure if we can trust him. Fia HATES everything the general represents, but he blackmails her with an offer she can’t resist: learning to control her Focus. I loved learning about the magic system and how each person has their “focus which is an ability that they have a strong affinity with.
Their romance is a slow burn that will drive you up the walls!! I enjoy a good build up to spice so I was screaming when it finally happens 👀 although, I have feeling Laryk is not going to be endgame but I won’t say more so not to spoil you guys! The characters are my favorite part of the story (LOVE Osta 🥹) and I cannot wait for book 2 😱🙌🏻
What you can expect: ✨hidden dark powers ✨slow burn hate to love romance ✨strong female friendships ✨he’s the general, she’s a recruit guard ✨class divide ✨morally grey MMC
i NEED the second book immediately!! this was amazing! I was so immersed into this book i couldn't put it down it was so good!! I don't want to spoil anything but man i KNEW i that person was suspicious for a reason!! I never really trusted them at all!!!
Now onto the characters..... Fia the absolute sweetest and the one who deserves so much happiness. She definitely reminded me of Aelin Galathynius but like better in a different way? if that makes sense? I feel like her journey was incredibly relatable and you really got to see her feelings on everything and her learning to be more confident in herself.
General Laryk was an interesting one....... i wasn't sure of him in the beginning because honestly he was a huge mystery to me and i did not like him. but as we went on and towards the middle and end i started to like him a bit but he still just has so many secrets and im just really confused about him.... but i have a feeling we will get to know more in the second book....
Osta was definitely my favorite side character in this book. she is such a sweetheart and i love how much she loved Fia and was just such a good friend to her and only wanted the best for her. Their friendship was so nice to see.
ALSO i can't believe this is Grenwich and Lennox's debut book????? It's incredible and i am definitely putting them on my auto buy list. I wish i could read this book for the first time again. I got that same feeling while reading this book that i got when i first read ACOTAR and i just know i am going to love this series!
If you love a war college setting, training sessions, slow burn, an intriguing magic system and two words: Shadow. Wielder. THIS IS FOR YOU!
That is all i will say for now.
⚠️Beware⚠️ it ends on a cliffhanger (this is a warning for all still grieving onyx storm and trying to ascend from that downward spiral) fortunately, book two is already available, so you won’t be left dangling from a cliff for long…👀
Thank you so much to Net Galley, Bree Greenwich and Parker Lennox for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
To say I devoured Riftborne is an understatement - I couldn’t put it down.
The world building is gorgeous and textured, dealing with complex issues in a way that is manageable and easy to follow. The prose flows beautifully; the way people and places were described was so evocative. I was quickly transported into the world of Sidhe with all its struggles and wonders alongside our reluctant heroine.
Mentor/Mentee dynamics is one of my favourite romance tropes, and let me tell you, the chemistry is SIZZLING. Throw in a sunshine x grumpy bestie trope, and I’m in heaven.
Riftborne is out now and is a MUST READ new adult romantasy, for fans of Fourth Wing and Powerless (for the readers) and New Mutants/X-Men (for the movie lovers). I need the follow up after that cliffhanger. Lord have mercy.
3⭐️ i guess. i loved the first 20% then the mmc gave me the ick so bad and i couldn’t stop picturing him as arobynn hamel😭 like i really hated this man and everything he said/did i cant lie. i really loved the worldbuilding but then as we got to the actual story, it just started feeling like a mashup of powerless & fourth wing without the dragons haha😔 i won’t say it was bad it definitely wasn’t but it just wasn’t for me. i cringed too often & the writing style was so random bc it’d be proper/classic and then switch up with modern phrases in the same sentence and i was getting whiplash🫢 i will say whoever this mans was at the end was definitely more my type so i hope this goes in his direction💅🏼
I have been thinking about this one more since I finished it. It felt very basic romantasy for me for a large part, but without a lot of romance. The ending I think was done well, but needed to be paced a bit better to get there. I loved where it went, I just wish the lead up had been a little less rushed.
This book was just a genuinely lovely surprise. I enjoyed this book and found that I did not want to point it down while I was reading it. For a debut novel, it was incredible.
Things I liked: - The story line/plot was fantastic. I enjoyed the magic system and the world building. The pacing was great and I did not get bored with any part of this story. The ending was amazing and not at all what I expected. After that ending, I can't wait to see what happens next in the next two books. - The characters were so well written and there was so much depth. At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about the General, but he grew on me the more that I read. I just wish that his character was explored more. Fia was such a strong FMC, and I loved her character progression as the story went on. Things definitely went from 1 to 100 throughout this book and I just know that Fia will become even better. - The relationship was a definite slow burn. The build up from enemies to mentor/mentee with chemistry that the two had was sooooo good. It was definitely not a main focus of this book and it was brought up multiple times here and there as mentions and experiencing jealousy, but nothing happens for most of the book, which I was completely fine with, and was happy that it allowed for more focus on the plot of this book.
Things I did not like: - There was literally nothing that I had a major problem with. If I had to nitpick, maybe just too much focus on the jealousy and throwing balls when people are dying. Those two things were things that I found myself rolling my eyes at once or twice.
Do I recommend this book? Yes! I would recommend this book for any fans of new adult romantasy, who love books that are focused a bit more on the plot than the romance. It did give me slight Fourth Wing vibes and I saw someone else compare it to Powerless. I did not read Powerless, so I can't 100% say if this is true or not.
Romance: Mostly crush, not that much happens imo (1,5 spicy scenes) Jealousy/OW: Yes, he's fucking another woman the whole book and FMC is JEALOUS () ❓H ❓CڴڳԲ
🌹: The world-building is solid (Even though it's a copy of FW). I'm a fan of class divide in books and the tension between the two countries was clear and well-done. I liked the FMC and how her power was described and dealt with. It took time and effort to control her powers and with each new "ability" we get closer to the final plot twist. I liked author's writing style as well.
🥀: I wouldn't classify this as a romance because the MC is barely interested in FMC, in my opinion. Sadly, it's heavilyinfluenced by Fourth Wing and it doesn't work. Not much happens and some parts are necessarily long while others skip so quickly they might as well not be there. I absolutely hated Osta and found her incredibly annoying and simple-minded. Sadly, I didn't feel any sort of connection between Fia and other characters, except for Ma.
Overall: I wish more happened (which would help the pacing), wasn't a clear copy of Fourth Wing, there was more of an actual romance and there was one clear focus that would overpower other things happening.
Trigger warnings: alcohol, child death/grief (past, on page, talk about a lot), murder, xenophobia, parent death (past)
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Any negative feedback is not meant as an insult to the author!
A story about friendship and unconditional love, loyalty and heavy prejudice. A little puerile and veeery slow burn? An understatement at the beginning but then it gets much better.
What I didn’t like: So, Fia is blackmailed into working with a special unit, which is described as a secret weapon. But she receives a manual with everything carefully explained. Not very credible The first time she channels her power, which she couldn’t even reach, she immediately controls it to a stop It seems every character’s hair falls weightlessly around their shoulders. Oh, and there’s no way a grown man, speaking in the first person, would refer to his Scooby-Doo as “his length.🤭
What I liked: Fia’s growth as a person. She really discovers her potential and develops her abilities throughout the story. I loved having Laryk’s POV during that very hot dream. Just like that, completely out of the blue. We realise later on why it happens. With or without meaning, it was hot. Loved it.
Even though there were a few clues here and there, they weren’t obvious and didn’t prepare me for that ending. I didn’t see that coming.
With those aspects I pointed out improved this can be a great story. So please, lady-authors, let’s get to work and pay a little more attention to that kind of detail. Also a few typos here and there For this my rating cannot go any further.
I am going to read Book II of the series.
I received a free e-ARC from NetGalley and these thoughts are my own.
If you loved Fourth Wing or the Red Queen series you’ll love this book! It’s fast paced and thrilling. I stayed up way too late to finish this one! Thank you to Parker and Bree for sending me an ARC copy your debut novel! I can’t wait for the second one!! Fia’s story is heartbreaking but makes her a strong FMC. The elements weaved into the story propel the plot and make for a non stop entertaining ride. I can’t wait to see where Fia and Laryk’s journey takes them next.
This was probably 3.5 until the very end which put it at a SOLID 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. This is definitely good but very clearly the establishing book of the trilogy & I do think it did a good job of that, it was just a tad slow until the end. Which I do feel is intentional & that’s totally fine. I’m a patient reader.
PLOT Fia is Riftborne, an orphan to rebels from an uprising 2 decades ago that ended in the demolition of her country. She was branded & is a citizen of the country who annihilated hers, though she deals with prejudices for the choices her parents made. While everyone has magic, hers is specific & dangerous, & when it gets found out she has 2 options. Deal with the consequences of her actions, or join the Guard the same one that killed her parents. This book has - rebellion fallout - enemies to lovers - training & war college - lots of types of magic - warring against mysterious shadowy enemies - good side stories & characters - low-med spice
PROS - This is setting the stage & doing it well. For the characters, for the world, etc. - Fia is a solid FMC with a lot of warring emotions & allegiances. She’s def imperfect but you can sense the inner conflict & you understand it. This is going to be super interesting in book 2 I think. - I love Osta. I love her optimism & I love her being the ray of sunshine to Fia’s shadows sometimes. - I also loooove Ma. I love a grumpy old broad who ain’t afraid to share her wisdom. So sue me. - I like the magic system a lot. I like that person’s focus isn’t necessarily the same old same old. While there are some standard fire & earth powers, there are also others (like Fia’s, like Osta’s, etc.) & those are interesting. I WILL say I hope it’s not limitless power, but we see some limits so far with Fia so I’m hoping we continue explore its strengths & weaknesses. - The way the authors explain Fias magic is unique & with such detail I can almost feel it as I’m reading. - This had me theorizing. I love to guess where it’s going & I got some pleasant surprises - or at least an element of the twist was a surprise. - The ending! Big fan of how that shifted! That brought it up to 4 stars eaaaaasy!
CONS - This is slow for most of the book. That’s okay for me personally but if you need a ton of action you’re going to have to wait quite awhile for it. - Fia leans a little miscommunication tropey sometimes. So sometimes you’re just like “hey girl easily solved problem of you’d just talk a lil but there is explanation for why she’s this way.
VERY excited for book 2 because I’ve heard it only gets better. 🙌🏼
⚠️SPOILERS ⚠️ . . . . . . For real don’t read this if you didn’t finish the book . . . . . . - I couldn’t really get into the romance for the life of me even though *he* is mostly my brand of MMC (flirty, cocky, forbidden but obsessed) & I FEEL VINDICATED. Because that little intro at the end DEFFFFF suggests a man Imma love & also maybe an incredible love triangle??? I’m excited!
Thank you Net Galley, Bree Grenwich, and Parker Lennox for the ARC!
Okay wow holy sh**. I DEVOURED this book. The fmc the mmc the plotline the supporting characters I really fell in love with every aspect of this book. I really love how we actually saw the fmc grow from an unsure and self conscious person into a strong and confident badass. Don’t get me wrong, I love Aelin Galathynius as much as any fantasy reader, but going on Fia’s growth journey with her made her so much more relatable and I absolutely loved seeing her really come into her own power and strength.
The spicy dreamwalk?? *chefs kiss*
The final fight scene kept me on the edge of my seat and the realization at the end of everything left me well & truly gobsmacked. I knew everything couldn’t have been as it seemed, but I wasn’t expecting that big of a twist.
One of the things I didn’t love is the fmc and mmc’s relationship felt a little odd to me. Her trusting him almost immediately felt out of character for her, but I know that was important for the story’s development. Some of her friendship scenes did make me a little uncomfortable, but I think Fia’s power of forgiveness is stronger than mine haha.
Lastly, thank you for the pronunciation guide because I would have been absolutely lost without it 🙌🏼
Overall, I loved this book, it sucked me in from page one and I absolutely will be reading the next installment. I can’t wait for it to come out so I can recommend it to friends!
—— SPOILERS BELOW——
Laryk and Fia’s quasi-enemy to lover arc was so fun to read and I really enjoyed it, he really helped her find herself, even if it was more for his own benefit & he made some questionable choices along the way, like his constant attention to Narissa and not even attempting to help Fia at the end (I don’t know what he could have done.. but like I said, Fia’s power of forgiveness is stronger than mine lol). I have a feeling I’m going to be falling for this dark haired, golden eyed, broody character that Fia has dreamt about…especially with the way he and Fia had their little moment at the end of the book?? I’m feeling like they may be the *real* enemies to lovers. But either way I can’t wait to see where this story goes!
Kept waiting for the love interest to appear. When I realized it was supposed to be the MMC I was out. He seems completely not into her and her transition from hating to being obsessed was so quick. It made no sense. Didn’t feel close to any of the side characters and pretty uninterested in the world building. Disappointing.
3.75⭐️ !! I did enjoy this one, but the END & everything I’ve heard about book 2 makes me SO EXCITED to continue this series.
I’m SO intruiged where this story will go. Loved the trainer/trainee trope in this book 😭 I definitely feel like this was a set-up book for the rest of the world to really open up, so I’ll be reading book 2 ASAP!!
Thank you, NetGalley and ONYX publishing for the ARC!
As soon as I saw the cover for this, it was an instant request. IYKYK. It’s one for the minimalist cottage core girlies, and I *need* a physical copy. Riftborne absolutely blew me away. From page one, I was captivated by the magic system and rich, but not overly complex world-building. The FMC, Fia, is one of my new favorites. I also have a new favorite book best friend in Osta, who must be protected at all costs. The world had a nice blend of fantasy aspects but also felt modern in a way that did not distract from the story. The plot was a non-stop thrill ride with unexpected twists that kept me guessing! The pacing was perfect, building enough tension until leaving me completely shocked at the end. I never saw it coming, and I’m devastated that I’ll never be able to read this again for the first time. CHILLS. I could tell there were some easter eggs probably planted earlier in the story that I didn’t catch on the first read-through, so I’m excited to peel through the pages again to find them. This book really was a perfect mix of fantasy and romance. And the MMC well, let’s just say, the spice was spicing, but did not overwhelm the plot. I loved the way the authors explored themes of trauma and healing. The character development happens so naturally as the story unfolds and it’s really rewarding when Fia finally accepts not only herself, but her newfound purpose. It was a long journey, and certainly a SLOW burn, but so so worth it in the end. I really couldn’t put this one down. While the book was mostly fantastic, if I HAD to complain about something, I’ll admit I did think the writing style wasn’t always the most consistent. However, this didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the story. I can't wait to see where this book takes us in the next installment. Like, I need it NOW. The book hangover is going to be strong. I’ll be telling everyone I know about it.
I’ll be living on the Isle of Sídhe for the unforeseeable future thank you. The fact that this book isn’t even out yet which means I have to wait that much longer for book 2?? That’s going to be a struggle 😭
I can’t believe this is Grenwich & Lennox’s debut, what an incredible read. I struggled to put it down. It had me engaged from the start, the writing makes it easy to keep up with the characters and world building, which got me hooked!
Fia is such a shy, yet fierce fmc with a lot of love to give to the people she cares about. I loved reading about how she developed as a character and to see her “focus grow. Laryk is so intense, mysterious and smug, which makes me absolutely love him, of course. Fia and Laryk’s relationship is so hot and cold, which makes you crave the two of them together even more. Fia’s friend Osta says “why is he looking at you like that he either wants to kill you or bed you. And there’s absolutely no in between, which sums up the two of them perfectly. Osta is the most positive, cute and supportive friend, yet she knows when to say what needs to be said.
I can’t wait for the second book, I didn’t want this one to end!! If you enjoy romantasy, this should be a definite read. I’ll be talking highly of this book and recommend it everywhere 🖤
Thank you so so much to Grenwich & Lennox for this arc, I’m extremely grateful I got to read it before release date, this has been one of my favourite fantasy reads this year!!
I'm really sad I will never be able to read this book for the first time again. I am, however, looking forward to reading it a second and third when the next ones come out.
Based on the historical events that brought us to where the story begins, everyone is dealing with a lot of trauma. And every character responded differently. I appreciated that range and found most of the characters well written and easy to connect to.
Fia has more than enough to deal with, and girl, don't I know it. I mean, I'm not dealing with a cache of unwieldy powers or dark ass wraiths threatening to destroy my home, but I got some stress, too. So, her character's reasoning for her actions resonated with me.
Reading about her growing powers was interesting, but then the *why* they were manifesting was even better. (I seriously can't wait for more. That cliffhanger, though.)
Don't ask, but in my head cannon, I couldn't stop picturing Gen. Ashford as Gilderoy Lockheart (iykyk), and I'm sorry for that.
The world building isn't complicated, which is NOT a bad thing. Couple that with likable characters, and I've come around now to why I've rated this a 4.5. I had no struggle keeping up, I was invested, constantly, in what was going to happen next, and what is GIlde- er, Gen. Ashford's overall play?
So, on to my nitpicking- There were a couple of minor time jumps, days, or weeks, but it didn't make sense to me as a human. One of the weeks' time jumped, and after that time had passed, *then* Fia had a conversation with another character about a tiff regarding a very important slip up? I felt like that would need immediate attention. (See? So nitpicky. I'm sorry!)
I also really hope to have a smidgen more insight about Blood Clot. I hope it's not stabby. Or not too stabby. It's gonna be stabby, isn't it...
Anyway, thank you so much, Grenwich & Lennox, for the ARC! (I can't wait to buy it.)
I can't keep going, I started reading it but it was just eh, so I thought I'd try to audio at 1.4 to just get through it 😆 and I still can't, feels to YA and I found myself rolling my eyes alot, I'm on chapter 17 and I'm like what even is the plot?!
This was such a fun & unique romantasy read! -Slow burn romance -Morally grey MMC -Trainer x Trainee -Dark powers -War college -Found family
Let me start off by talking about the ending because I simply can’t get over it?!??!? I had my suspicions about things but NEVER did I see that coming!! I absolutely loved these characters and their personalities. The found family vibe this book gave was so good. Osta is one of my fav side characters that i’ve read about in AWHILE. She really brought a lot of comedic relief to the story. I loved the MMC from the get gooooo😍 He’s definitely morally grey but with this sophisticated, mystery vibe to him that keeps you on your toes that I ATE UP. FMC is a total badass & I was rooting for her the entire time. The slow burn in this book was sooo good but was edging me on sooo bad hahaha. Fia & Laryk’s banter had me laughing so much! The overall setting of the book, the creatures, the storyline, the plot twists all so good!
This book was so fun, and fed all of my romantasy cravings! Found family, academy-like setting, training trope, and an interesting magic system. This book had the same vibes as Powerless in a Fourth Wing setting. The stakes were high but I found comfort in some of the predictability. This was the slowest burn or all slow burns, but I loved the realistic pacing of the relationship (well, as realistic as a fictional story can be 😂). So much fun and a great, digestible read!
