When a baby is abandoned in Peter and Lily’s courtyard, the safe world they once knew is rocked to its core. Lily instantly falls in love with Nissa—a baby with a shock of red hair just like Lily. Peter finds the child’s menacing black eyes and uncanny resemblance to his wife unsettling. But Nissa’s appearance isn’t nearly as disturbing as her penchant for mind control and chaos. Clearly, Nissa is in charge and on a mission.
Born in the San Francisco Bay Area, Bev Stout now lives in Gilbert, Arizona, with her husband, a former Navy Lieutenant and their two mismatched dogs–Milly, a Basenji-mix rescue dog and Toby, the Stouts forever puppy.
Since Bev neither sews nor makes quilts, she decided to write her first novel as a gift to her family. Secrets of the Realm, an eighteenth century adventure story, has since been read on five continents and in seventeen countries.
Her second novel is quite a departure from her previous seafaring tale. My Name is Nissa is a contemporary fantasy about a young couple, Peter and Lily Warren. They live ordinary lives, nary a blip on the radar screen. That is until Nissa comes into their lives. The child, with a shock of red hair just like Lily, is either a blessing or a curse–maybe both. Only time will tell, and the clock is ticking.
When Bev is not writing, she is either teaching piano, involved in volunteer work, or simply enjoying family and friends. Tennis has been put on the back burner until her broken her foot heals. Trips to Cambria, California, bring her back to the ocean that she loves, and closer to finishing Return of the Realm, Secrets of the Realm’s sequel.
I bought this book, intrigued to find who Nissa is, and what constitutes an "urban fantasy." It did not disappoint, leading through a modern-day tale with excitement, curiosity, and humor. The author did a great job of keeping me on my toes - let's just say I could not have guessed the outcome if I tried. I felt like I was part of the family, wondering about all of the strange occurrences. I also loved the descriptions of the characters' small hometown, reminding me of my own. They say the best stories are the ones that make you forget you are reading a book- that was definitely how I felt about My Name is Nissa. Looking forward to reading more from this author!
If you like simple, sweet fairy tales then this is the book for you. I loved Bev Stout's "Secrets of the Realm" and now I'm anxiously awaiting the sequel, Return to the Realm. These are all good, well written, interesting reads from a really talented author.
