ARC received for review

Yes, I didn't read the first book, but I wasn't lost at all.

Sophia had leukemia as a child and bet it. Then she went on to get two doctorates. All by the age of 24. She is so literal that she's hilarious. Now she's getting sick again and wants to do one more thing before she dies.

Connor wants to die after having survived an IED that killed his teammates. He thinks helping Sophia will be a great way to die protecting her. He wasn't expecting to fall in love with her.

This was a great book full of adventure, a seriously nasty bad guy or two, laughter, sex and love. I look forward to the next book with Max. I hope she has a novella planned to tell us what happened to Gene on his decoy mission.

"Chemical weapons have a limit. Infect people with the right disease and it could end up everywhere."

Let's jump right into the plot:

All Special Forces Communications Sergeant Connor Button wants is revenge.
Surviving and IED when all of his warrior brothers died has left a hollow ache in his chest.
He wants to die in duty and so he picks the most dangerous mission there could be;
Protect a 24 year old physician- Captain Sophia Barry, youngest physician in the USA to have a double speciality in Virology and hematology and be part of the Biological Response Team.
There is a bioweapon being developed and Sophia may be the only one to figure out how to fix it.
one problem...
She's dying.
Connor may have gotten much more than he bargained for, and in the fire of war, he may find a reason to live.

This book was INTENSE! sorry, that had to be capslocked because it certainly was crrraazzy, nail- bitingly, on the edge of your seat type of deal!

The moment this book began I totally fell in love with Connor, he is hilarious and extremely likable- in terms of personality. He is just the type of guy you love reading about, plus, he's a kick-butt hero. Don't mess with him, seriously.

I love how Sophia thought of him at first:

"Her bodyguard was a ninja. Now that was interesting."

It was so funny how everyone was scared of Sophia and Connor comes around and doesn't let her surly demeanor faze him. He takes it all in stride which shocks her.

Now WARNING- This book is pretty descriptive in EVERYTHING. Which means there is language, and sexual situations (and scenes) and gore (come on guys, we're dealing with diseases). If that makes you uncomfortable, i give thee a fair warning. (which i kind of wish i had).

Other than that, this book was great, it was complex and suspenseful in a nail-biting way, you couldn't figure out what was happening next. Assassinations, kidnapping plots, intrigue, romance and a tyranical villain.

If that sounds like your thing then you'll be smitten for sure.

Stay awesome!

ARC REVIEW:
I enjoyed the first book in this series, , for it's focus on biological warfare. It reminded me of the books by Robin Cooke where biology goes amok. But I didn't relate to the romance in that book. I liked the characters, just not together. In contrast, I really enjoyed the relationship between the characters in this story, although I didn't like the heroine very much. I appreciate her courage, determination and spunk, but I think she is very defensive about her condition and that makes her come across as whiny. However, I really liked Connor. Despite his quick-trigger temper, I enjoyed his protectiveness, loyalty, and big brother-vibe. Despite my reservation of Sophia, I thought Ms. Rowe did an excellent job in developing their relationship amidst the pursuit of a bio-terrorist intent on unleashing a bio-weapon on the world.

As the author's bio indicates, she comes from a medical background and it shows. However, it is presented in a clear manner that adds interest and credibility to the story, instead of detracting from it. I love learning new topics and love it even more when it is a part of a fantastic narrative.

IN A NUTSHELL:
If you like romantic suspense, you won't want to miss this second book in the Biological Response Team series.

Thank you to the author, Carina Press and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange of an honest review.

Netgalley review copy.

Second in the Biological Rapid Response Team series and back in the Middle East following on from book one where a rogue ex-informant to the USA has developed a deadly anthrax virus and is on the run. Dr Sophia Perry is a virologist and haematologist and top of her game, contracted to the USA to help identify and hopefully treat any new threats the rogue informant produces.

Sophia has her own problems though, she is suffering from the after effects of childhood leukemia and the toll that is taking on her body. If she tells her boss Maximillion he'll pull her from mission and shes knows she's the best for the job. Max knows he has to organise protection for Sophia but she's rejected everyone so far.

Communications Sergeant Connor Button is recovering from IED explosion that severely injured him and killed his platoon. He's biting at the bit to get back into active duty and serve justice for his teammates, no matter the cost. So he doesn't treat Sophia with kid gloves just because of how she looks and lack of military rank like all the other protection options before him.

Sophia and Connor go onto a deployment in Syria for a mysterious outbreak and find more than just sick civilians.

My only critique is the use of the word "pansy" twice in this book by the MMC to describe other men. No need for homosexual slurs in this day and age, ruins the mood instantly. Hopefully this is a one off as the previous book didn't include this.

I stepped out of my usual literary comfort zone to read this high-octane, pulse-pounding tale of a custom-made deadly pathogen, those who want to use it, and those who are equally determined to stop them. Although I may not read another by this author, it has been an interesting change of pace to observe this Rapid Response Team’s field activities in a 21st century environment of global terrorism.

Lethal Game: Biological Response Team, Book 2 is by Julie Rowe. It is a biological and psychological novel dealing with a terrorist and biological warfare. The book, like book one is fantastic.
Captain Sophia Perry at age 24 is the Nation’s youngest virologist and hematologist. As a genius, she was always a step ahead of everyone else and was a little socially behind. She could easily talk to other scientists and mathematicians for hours; but could not easily talk to civilians or others who weren’t scientists. She came across as abrupt and sometimes rude. However, she would not let anyone coddle her because of her age nor her looks. She had cancer as a child and it had gone into remission. Sophia was determined to make a difference before the cancer returned. Now she was showing signs of having problems, especially in her ease of bruising. Because of this, she had been rushed through the steps of joining the Army and missed self defense classes. Only her immediate supervisor knew of her having had cancer and her bruising; but he was not aware of her current blood tests which showed an abnormality in her blood test. Sophia knew her time was limited and wanted to do her job so she told no one.
She is assigned a bodyguard against her wishes. Communications Sergeant Connor Button was given that job. He had been injured in an explosion in which all of his men were killed. This was his first job since then. All he wanted was to get to the front so he could be killed as he felt he should have been at first. However, his honor determined that he must give his very best to the duty assigned to him whish was watching over Sophia.
A terrorist named Akbar was trying to create weapons using biological warfare. He had created a new form of Anthrax which didn’t work as he wanted it to and it was detected and stopped. Now a new disease had taken hold in a Syrian refugee camp. Sophia was sent to find out what it was and what would be the best way to combat it. She reluctantly accepted Connor and his team to go with her and even more reluctantly agreed to follow his rules. What would they find in the village? Would her blood worsen? Would she ever tell anyone what was going on with her? Could she and Connor resist their attraction for each other?

In Lethal Game, the second book in the Biological Response Team series, author Julie Rowe introduces the reader to Captain Sophia Perry , the nation’s youngest virologist and hematologist, who is sent to a Syrian refugee camp to investigate a deadly breakout with Special Forces Communications Sergeant Connor Button assigned to keep her safe. Sophia and Connor have to find the source of the breakout, but their mission is wrought with danger lurking around every corner. And if that isn't enough, Sophia is battling another round of cancer, and as her health deteriorates, Sophia and Connor are determined to defeat the enemies before the cancer defeats her.

This is a intriguing romantic suspense military tale that takes the reader on an exhilarating thrill ride. Sophia and Connor's story is a fast-paced, action packed tale filled with an exciting mixture of romance, suspense, personal struggles, and unexpected twists and turns that easily keeps the reader sitting on the edge of their seats.

I loved the mystery, suspense, drama, sense of danger, and intense military action used in the search to find the source of the breakout, and when you add in the internal personal struggles mixed in with the electric sexual chemistry and tension between Sophia and Connor, you have one hell of thriller that will keep you thoroughly captivated and wanting more. I can't wait to see what new adventures the author will take her readers on in the next book in the series.

If you are looking for a romantic military suspense tale that will give you an adrenaline rush and get your heart racing, look no further, Lethal Game is the book for you!

Slower paced and more time spent with character development than in peril but still a solid 2nd book in the series.

The Biological Response Team is still searching for the terrorist that wrecked havoc in the first book. This time up its Sophia Perry who is a virologist and hematologist. Sophia had leukemia as a child and even though she went into remission now her bone marrow has stopped producing. She figures she is on borrowed time and wants to do one last big thing before she dies. She gets that chance when the terrorist unleashes a new bio weapon.

Connor Button is the latest Special Forces soldier to be assigned to the BRT. He was the sole survivor of an IED blast that killed all of his team. He too is looking for one last big mission to put himself in harms way in hopes of it also taking his life. What he didnt count of was the young genius he was assigned to. During their time getting to know each other and after being deployed to the latest site of the biological strike two people who didnt figure they would live long lives come to find a reason to want to live.

There is one more book in the series which will hopefully wrap up catching the terrorist and will give us the head of the Biological Response Team story.

I wanted very much to enjoy this, and as a medical practitioner, I am perfectly capable at suspending disbelief while enjoying medical-related content. However, I found the medical inaccuracies in this book too glaring to ignore.

Some discussion with a doctor or appropriate medical sources (other than google) might have benefited this book, because the assessment and management of ITP is very poorly done here (especially by a doctor who is apparently supposed to be a haematologist).

I very rarely read the next book in a series straight after the first, but I was more than eager to read this story. This story opened my eyes to the differences in the different military specialty groups and I enjoyed knowing this, it explained why Special Forces worked well with the Biological Response Team.

The lead characters are Communications Sergeant Connor Button, Special Forces, and Dr. Sophia Perry, who, being a genius, was a specialist in virology and hematology at twenty-four. These two characters probably shouldn’t be compatible but definitely were, and I enjoyed their relationship. One major thing about this author I’ve learned is that she doesn’t let her characters jump into bed quickly, and for that, I am grateful. The intimacy side of the story doesn’t overtake the suspense element, which is sensational.

The continued threat of the modified anthrax meant as many people as possible were needed to help locate and eradicate the perpetrator and the anthrax, using civilian specialists if needed. Sophia being a brilliant doctor who specialised in this area, meant she was welcomed to the Biological Response Team. Connor might have suffered a terrible trauma and injury resulting in his need for revenge but his skills were needed as well. With all of the action and drama that literally fills the pages of this book, it was clear the military made the right decision to get Connor on board.

Along with the intense action, there were some big surprises when the plot took some twists and turns. I always love an unpredictable story and this book fills the criteria perfectly. The detailed descriptions, at times excruciatingly so but necessary, truly help to build visual images like a movie reel.
Bring on book three, Viral Justice!

📚Review ~ Lethal Game
Biological Rapid Response Team Book 2
🖋Author ~ Julie Rowe
🖋Genre: Action & Adventure Romance, Military Romance
⭐️Rating 5/5

🔬 Dr. Sophia Perry
🥾 Special Forces Communications Sergeant Connor Button

★Protective hero, Bodyguard MMC
★Genius, Virologist & Hematologist Specialist FMC
★Limited Time Factor
★Threat Assessment
★Fast-action, Intense

Technically not an interconnected book, I would recommend reading the first in the series (Deadly Strain) to understand the ongoing threat level. I enjoyed Sophia’s straightforward and determined approach to stop this new biological threat. Despite her failing health, Sophia’s greatest hope is to make a difference. Connor is her perfect match. Probably because he is the youngest with four older sisters! A man who is willing to listen, support his partner, and challenge his partner at the same time is a keeper!

Lethal Game is the 2nd in this three-part series. Sophia and Connor’s mission is more treacherous than they would’ve anticipated. While investigating an unknown infectious disease outbreak, they realize Sophia has been marked as a high-value asset. The enemy is aware of Sophia’s unique medical qualifications, making her the perfect scientist to create the next epic pandemic.

From the very beginning, Connor will need to put his personal demons aside in order to commit to his assignment to keep Sophia safe, guarding her while she works to identify an unknown but deadly pathogen. Falling in love had never been part of the mission

I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for an unbiased review of Lethal Game. Thank you very much; I appreciate it!

Lethal game was everything that I was looking for in a military romance. There was a strong female MC, and I don't mean physically strong, though I think she had terrific physical strength, but I'm talking mentally strong. Dr. Sophia Perry knew what she wanted, went for what she wanted, and never compromised on what or who she wanted. When her expectations weren't met, she wasn't afraid to make it known. She is the pinnacle of a strong woman I think every woman should aspire to be. Connor was the dream man. He was strong, caring, compassionate, and protective, yet he knew when to step away and let Sophia handle it herself.

The story was unique and gripping. The way the plot was executed kept me in suspense and was intriguing. I have never read a book following an army team of doctors combatting a disease terrorist attack caused by a mad chemist trying to get revenge against the American army.

Connor's backstory was what pushed me to read this book, as he struggles with survivor guilt and is suicidal. I think his story was wasted potential because, as you would expect, he should have PTSD, which he didn't exactly struggle with. He went to a psychologist even if you try to rationalise by saying the incident was months ago. He lied to the psychologist and didn't work on survivor guilt and suicide ideation. I hate that the fix to his mental issues was his love for Sophia and that he was magically fixed. That just isn't how it works and shouldn't be portrayed as such in the book. He should have worked on himself and shown some character development, which I don't think he displayed.

Lethal Game is better than the first book

Each book gets better than the last one and I can't wait to read Colonel Max's story. However, I would recommend reading them in order so that you understand who Akbar is and why he's decided to take his anger out on the world.

Connor Burton is the only survivor of an IED attack that took out his unit. He's determined to recover and give out his version of justice who are responsible even if it kills him. When he's assigned to Colonel Max and the Biological Response Team he realizes he's met his match with Dr. Sophia Perry. Her snarky comebacks and interaction with Connor and his team, Smoke, River, Henry, Macler, Stalls and Norton are the back bone of the story. But it's their bargain that if they make it through this outbreak in a Syrian Refugee camp he owes her a lot of vertical bed time. Now they have to find the cause and of course Akbar.

Captain Sophia Perry has two goals to find Akbar before he creates a virus that even the Biological Response Team can't handle and live long enough to find a cure for the current virus in Syria. She's a childhood leukemia survivor but her body is starting to rebel making her blood count and the ITP (diopathic thrombocytopenic purpura ) realize that her bone marrow isn't working. But she meets her bodyguard Connor and realizes he's the man that she wants to sleep with him. But there's a price on her head and a lot of people trying to abduct her and Akbar wants her to create a virus that will kill everyone. Can they find out what is killing the refugees in time and also take out Akbar in time?

Fantastic book and I can't wait to read Colonel Max's book next.

Well, Connor and Sophia really made this book. I liked how prickly Sophia was at the start. She had good reason to be so skeptical. Connor was more than able to get around Sophia by being smart and asking those around her what she needs. Huh, imagine it would be that easy, but not something most alpha males would do.

Once Sophia realized that she could trust Connor, things went so much better. Connor was able to help Sophia make her job easier and treat her like an adult and give her some skills that others didn't think she was up to.

The best part of this book was Sophia being blunt and asking Connor about sex and other boy/girl relationship things. At first Connor was thrown, but then he seemed to meet her bluntness with his own, something that allowed for no misunderstandings.

I loved seeing Sophia stand up to "bad guy" at the end, loved how she thwarted him and stop the horrible things he was doing this time around. It's just too bad that she didn't end him for good.

I had the pleasure of reading Lethal Game as an ARC, thanks to NetGalley and the author, Julie Rowe! 💙 And let me tell you—this was an emotional, high-stakes ride that kept me turning the pages.

Even though I didn’t read the first book, I never felt lost. The story does a great job of pulling you in with its intense medical drama, thrilling action, and the undeniable chemistry between Sophia and Connor. Sophia’s resilience and Connor’s quiet strength made them such a compelling duo, and I was completely invested in their journey.

Now, my only gripe? The repetition of certain facts—Sophia’s illness and Connor’s self-destructive tendencies were mentioned a lot. I get that these are huge parts of their characters, but after a while, it felt like déjà vu in every chapter. That being said, the emotional weight of their struggles was still powerful, and I loved watching them lean on each other despite everything.

Overall, this was a gripping, heartfelt read, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next book!

Captain Sophia Perry is part of the Biological Rapid Response Team and the youngest virologist and hematologist. She is sick because she had leukemia when she was a child. Sophia is sent to Syria to check out an outbreak at a refugee camp. Sophia has had several “bodyguards but they haven’t lasted. Communications Sergeant Connor Button was just released after being the only survivor in an IED explosion. He wants revenge until he’s assigned to Sophia to protect her. Sophia is keeping a secret from everyone and Connor will protect her with his life. Sophia’s health is deteriorating but she is determined not to let it stop her. When a crazed terrorist takes the camp hostage, it’s up to them to save everyone.
Edge of your seat suspense.
Steamy.
Action.
A killer virus.
Sort of enemies to lovers. I thought it is a great story and can’t wait to see what happens next.

Dr. Sophia Perry is a virologist and hematologist. She survived Leukemia as a child and has a blood disorder that she expects will kill her soon. She wants to make a difference before she dies. Connor Button is the only survivor of an attack that killed his Green Beret team. He agrees to be Sophia's bodyguard because he wants to get revenge for his team's death and he doesn't care if he dies getting it. Each is keeping a secret from the other. But, they develop a close relationship. Connor moves past wanting to die and protecting Sophia becomes more important than revenge. Sophia wants to protect Connor and make a difference. The bad guy in this series is seriously awful. He is without a moral compass and the number of dead is adding up. A very enjoyable entry in the series. I really enjoyed both characters. I am anxious to read Max's story next.

Lethal Game is the second book in the Biological Rapid Response Team series beginning where book one left off. This action-packed and sizzling romance written by Julie Rowe has personal health and worldwide health at risk. Doctor Sophia Perry continues to fight her own health issues while trying to stop an unknown breakout from moving to a larger population. Communications Sergeant Connor Button has his own struggles having lived through an explosion when his team did not.

Together they face the unknown and the danger together. Of course, there is some learning to get along, ignoring the attraction and embracing the moment because any moment could be their last. So real it is scary at times to think this could happen with biological warfare but rooting for the hero and heroine to make it out alive, find the cure, and find love together. Fast pace romantic suspense novel.

There was a pattern to the story, but it never got predictable. I knew something was about to happen but I never knew what to full expect. The changes in Connor from "I'm here to die" to "I am living for her" was so amazing to read. I really loved reading about an FMC that had something that could hinder her but she was not frail nor was she a superhuman. She was balanced, and that is something I don't see often enough in romance novels. I had not read the first one, but I didn't need to in order to enjoy this book. I will be looping back to read the first in the series and I can't wait for the third.

This book had me hooked with the first chapter. It has everything from action, romance, and military suspense. I could not put this book down. You can’t help but root for Con to come back to his normal self and for Sophia to finally live her own life. These two make a great team and are determined to end the next outbreak before it happens. Will they be blue to do that and stay alive? I was given a copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Gimme gimme gimme. That’s my reaction as soon as I see a Julie Rowe title. Whatever she writes- I’m all for it. With her background knowledge, these stories always have a plausibility about them. And wow- she knows how to keep the suspense and fire burning.

I loved these two characters. My heart hurt for the Sophia and Connor. My heart raced as their adventures kept me tight to the story. This is a stand-alone even though it is part of a series. Read it and enjoy!

Sophia just wants her chance to make a difference in the field. She wants to help and save lives. She doesn’t want a Soldier following her around and babysitting her.

Conner is eager to get back into active duty. So he will do anything in his power to make Sophia happy for the job. That is until he meets Sophia and finds he wants so much more.

This story had moments that made me chuckle but was still packed with danger and suspense. Can’t wait to read Max’s story.
