Undead #7

Undead and Unworthy

Rate this book
Betsy Taylor thought entering the world of the undead was a big adjustment. Being a new bride isn't much easier. The blush has only been on for two months, and Betsy has a lot to do: set up the new house, finish writing thank-you notes, and raise BabyJon, her half brother and legal ward. Just another happy American family adjusting to marital bliss.

Betsy's husband, Sinclair, has been perusing the Book of the Dead, and Betsy's visited by a ghost who's even more insufferable, stubborn, and annoying in death than she was in life. She not only blames Betsy for her condition but insists she fix it. It's all just a prelude to the fun and games awaiting Betsy and Sinclair when a pack of formerly feral vampires, hungry for blood and power, pays a visit to the happy couple.

It was entertaining. I may have chuckled in a few places. It isn’t rocket science. I’m not even sure what the plot arc was. But I’m not walking away thinking it was a waste of my time.

"Can we please have one midnight getaway without having to talk about Marc's penis?

Apparently not.
So, this series is taking a turn towards being a bit more dark and depressing. Penis talk will do that. Oh, and the death of beloved characters. Not.cool.

It's been more than 4 years since I read the previous instalment of this series, and in the meantime either my tastes have changed or the author got lazy, because this was barely worthy of finishing, let alone 2 stars (I'm in a generous mood). This used to be a fresh, fast and funny series, but this book in particular was just 240 pages of recap and wisecrackery. Granted, there is the smallest kernel of plot, but I suspect I'd have to read on to judge whether or not it advanced the story at all, and I'm not sure I'm prepared to do that.

Another fun romp with Queen Betsy with the wonderful Nancy Wu making it a lot more fun. There was a brief synopsis of the events that led up to this book, but Davidson still wasted a lot of words recapping. I hate that. This is pap. If I picked up the series from this book, I really wouldn't miss anything without the recap. It's just not that complicated. Spending 5 minutes telling me the back story on a character is not needed & plain boring.

Undead and Unworthy is the continuing story of Betsy (the Vampire Queen), and her gang of friends. It's the seventh book in the series, and unfortunately I felt that it was one of the weakest.

MaryJanice Davidson prefaced the book with a note to the reader letting us know that this is the first book in a new story arc. Along with new cover art, it seems like the story lines have gotten a little sexier and lighter. But it just didn't seem to have that much substance to me. The past novels in the series were also light and sexy, but there was enough character development to draw me in. In this one, it just seemed like event after event after event occurred but I didn't really care what happened to whom, or why, or how.

I used to really like this series, but I think it's gotten a little too fluffy for me. I just wish there was a little more for me to sink my teeth into. (Ha! That was some bad vampire humor.)

I'm not sure if I'll continue with this series. I might give it one more go since I have a soft spot in my heart for it, and it is a pretty quick read. But this one almost put me off. Unworthy, indeed.

I love the Queen Betsy books as well as MaryJanice Davidson's other books. I found that this one had to same humor in it. But I would really probably give it 3 1/2 stars. Better than average, but not as good as the others.
It was the beginning of a new arc, as expressed by the new cover art. People have had significant problems with the new cover art and many actually said they wouldn't get it or would import the British version so they would not have this cover on their shelf. While I don't think it is the greatest cover and it doesn't really represent Betsy to me, I think that's crazy. It's a picture- not picked by the author- and doesn't represent what's inside. Inside, it's the same lightweight book it's always been.
What did bother me about the book was Nick. He was constantly bitching and moaning and being nasty. I get that Betsy felt bad about what she did to him in the first book, but she took a good bit of verbal abuse from him without reacting. I found the lack of anger at some of what he was saying strange. Anyone else would have kicked his ass. And the fact that Jessica still stayed with him despite the open hatred and desire to kill her best friend puzzled me. And he was in the book for a good majority of the time. I was actually hoping he would die. I'm also hoping that the break-up between Nick and Jessica means he won't be in the next one. He's the reason I didn't think it was as good as the others. I was just really annoyed anytime he was there.
Who I do want to be in the books more is Marc. I honestly forget him as a character until he pops up again. I like him while he's there, but he's almost never there. Still, MJD did trim down her character pool a little, though it was sad, and maybe they won't be replaced for a while.

4 Stars:
The series is fun and mindless to read. Her last two books of this series were getting to a better story line yet without much plot. However, it just keeps getting better and better and I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Among some of my favorites. Outstanding literary work. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. The writing is captivating enough to keep you interested until the end and leave you wanting more. It has a fairly original or uniquely well-developed plot. The pretense and romance was well balanced and done with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors and chemistry. Not so much predictable if at all. Overall, loved it, I recommend reading!!

At one time I loved this series. It was witty, cute and easy to read. A wonderful 'beach read' or break between heavier books. And then MaryJanice Davidson broke a carnal rule; one I believe in a lot. She allowed a 'situation' to alter the timeline. I presume she did this so she could undo some decisions and happenings from previous books that were unpopular with readers; or because she had written herself into a bit of a corner and wasn't sure how to get out of it again to keep things moving. Either way it's despicable to me that Davidson did this.
I read one more book after this to see if I could get into this 'new' world and absolutely couldn't. I just hate knowing that the six books before this one are (more or less) wiped out of existence.
If you love this series stop at book 6. Make up your own ending and carry on to a different series. I suggest trying (her dragon and vampire romance books are very similar and equally funny) if you want something similar.

I love Betsy, Sinclair, Jessica, Tina, Nick and the rest... I even love babyJon when he's teething... however, this episode lacked something that all of the other books seem to have had.. It didn't contain the 'umph' and it felt a little like a chore to continue reading it...

Having said that, I will still continue to read the next books, the past ones were hilarious and I've loved them so far, I'm hoping the next one will perk up some.

MJD points out in her introduction that the new cover of UNDEAD AND UNWORTHY reflects the new direction that this book and the two upcoming ones will follow; a mini-story arc within a story arc. Frankly, I'm not all that thrilled.

Betsy is still Betsy -- still childish, still prone to immaturity, still interested with having sex with her new husband as often as possible, still the new guardian of Baby Jon (although he's conspicuously missing from this installment), still back-and-forth with best friend Jessica, still vampire-non-grata for Detective Nick.

It's all still there, with a bit of humor thrown in, and a new weird sideline into what I guess is the aforementioned "arc."

My biggest complaint with the story was the fact that, although after seven books I realize that MJD never goes into much description for ANYTHING, I was shocked that there was a major (and majorly depressing) conclusion to the book that was summed up in about three pages.

I hate that. Really. I don't expect the author to go into intricate detail (a la Stephen King) of description, dialogue, and backstory (as I said, it's not MJD's trademark), but just a few pages when you've seriously lessened the number of main characters??

Okay, overall, I didn't mind spending 2 1/2 hours reading UNDEAD AND UNWORTHY. And I'll still follow the series, even though it's not as great as it once was (basically, during the first two books). But I'm putting MJD on notice that, really, it's just not right to indiscriminately kill off some of my favorite characters.

Started this book a few days ago and hate it! I read the whole series up to now and I'm walking away. The first two books were cute and fun. The third was pretty entertaining as well. The series should have stopped there. The author insists on rehashing past story lines at the beginning of each subsequent book. If a reader is stupid enough to pick up book 7 without reading the prior books, too freakin' bad! They can catch up on their own time.

Here's some ideas for future titles:

"Undead and Uninspired"

"Undead and Unimaginative"

"Undead and a Dead Horse"

I find it very interesting that I am enjoying the sequels more than the original book.

I really like Betsy. I like that she tries so very hard. She thinks she's selfish and inept and I see a girl over her head and doing the best she can.

I am very much enjoying her grandpa. I hope his role continues in the next books.

Well, Queen Betsy is at it again. This time in her Marc Jacobs heels! She and Sinclair are still at it, hot and heavy. BabyJon is teething again. Tina wants to kill anybody who disagrees with the King and Queen. Nick just wants to kill Betsy, and Jessica has her hands full trying to keep Nick calm. Meanwhile, the Fiends have apparently gotten loose and decided to kill Betsy. Just another normal day in the life of the Queen of the Vampires!

While this book is just as hilarious and sarcastic as ever, with one-liners and comebacks aplenty...it does take a bit of a darker turn. I still enjoyed Betsy's antics and still want to go shoe-shopping with her and her black AMEX!

Mary Janice Davidson, step away from your computer! Take your silly "trilogy within a series" and toss it out the window. It's a terrible, terrible idea!

I read the Queen Betsy books for a quick, lighthearted read that leaves me chuckling. I don't want serious sub-plots or random new weirdo characters. I want fun!

The latest installment is much darker than the other books and I don't like it. Plus, the ending was HORRIBLE. I'm not going to tell you what happened because then this review will be marked with the scarlet 'spoiler.' But it wasn't very good. I'm just saying...

Elizabeth "Betsy" Taylor and Eric Sinclair

Being the vampire Queen is definitely not living up to the hype. Betsy can't catch a break. Newly married to Sinclair, but no time for newlywed bliss. Unbeknownst to her Garrett has been feeding the other fiends his blood and now they're coming after Betsy.

Being the person she is, she doesn't want to kill them, but some things can't be helped. Plus, her stepmom's ghost is visiting, and she doesn't know why. The woman gave her trouble in life and is now pestering her in death.

As usual she goes balls to the wall for the people she cares about, but this time she may not be able to save everyone.

I haven't figured out why the experienced vampires haven't schooled her more. At this far into the series she should be a bit more informed. Not to say that she isn't growing in her role, because you can see the progression of what she can do even if she doesn't always know how she does it.

Lucky number 7? I think so!

The Undead series is something I turn to when I need a fun, lighthearted read that doesn't take itself too seriously. I've made it to number seven, Undead and Unworthy, which (as the author acknowledges and can be visually seen in the different covers) has been slightly re-vamp-ed (I couldn't pass up the opportunity for an awful vampire pun).

With that being said, I think this book is the height of the series thus far. You know all the loveable, lustable and humorous characters, and now we get to see a lot more of their personalities... they clash with each other and still function as such an odd family. There's a bunch of feral vampires after Betsy and Nick seems to have extended a palm branch between the police force and the vampire community. True to Betsy's world, none of this can be good!

::Spoilers::

I usually enjoy the Betsy, Queen of the Vampires books, but this one completely derailed the series. The wrong couple died. Nick and Jessica are by far the most annoying people in the series and Davidson multiplied thier irritation factor by a hundred in this book. Jessica sounds like a spoiled, stubborn 5 yr old and Nick acts like a petulant teenager. These are supposed to be successful, wealthy people in their 30s and they sound like children. And Nick suddenly being the heir to a vast fortune after half a dozen books? That didn't make sense. In previous novels he wasn't wearing Armani, he was a hard working cop. Even Tina and Laura were a little annoying in this book. The sidekicks are no longer comic relief, but just page filler with their pointless dialogue.

The deaths of Antonia and Garrett were completely unwarrented. This is a romance series. How does it make sense to kill off a couple who have had their own novella?

Speaking of romance, why was Sinclair so cold towards Betsy? He is always secretive, but in this book he was super distant. Their relationship made no sense in this book. It was like a marriage of convenience. He stood by idly while Betsy was treated like crap by just about every character and did nothing to defend her when she bore the brunt of the blame for the problem with the fiends.

About that problem with the fiends, how did that make any sense? It took the blood of the vampire queen and the devils daughter to make Garret a whole person, but these fiends become human just off Garret's blood alone? And as soon as all seven of them are up and running all they can think about is killing Betsy, the one person who has kept them from death these past tow years? Except the one who goes off and kills criminals for his son the chief of police as to curb his violent tendencies? Huh? None of that makes sense.

Read this book only if you are a die hard fan of Betsy and need to know what happens to the characters. the series is best remembered for what it was and clearly not for what it will be.

I hate pleasant surprises.*

I'd prewritten much of this review (in my head, at least) before even cracking the book's spine. It was a well-planned metaphor about buying junk from the vending machine when you're not even hungry and eating it though it doesn't really taste good and leaves a greasy slime on your teeth.

Seriously, though, I couldn't have told you why I keep picking up the Undead books. They've never been satisfying -- too much chick, not enough lit. And though I've been accused (harrumph) of a supernatural obsession, I really only read the GOOD books. (And not many of those for as much as I consume.) And this one really hadn't been in that list for me. But, you know, it was there. On the shelf. Free, even.

And then Davidson had to catch me off guard.

Undead and Unworthy ramps down the shoe-and-wedding talk, which helps immensely. The plot is still paper-thin, but the quirks are less annoying and more fun. The Undead series is never going to fill me up, but I might be less ashamed about trying it for a snack next time.

*And, OK, you caught me. I don't hate surprises. But I do like catchy leads.

I've read the reviews before and found this book disappointed most of the readers. I, however, wasn't really disappointed. I don't take the Queen Betsy stories seriously because I'm in it for the laughs - and laugh a lot I did. If you're looking for some story with depth and character development, I suggest you pick up another book. I just want to read something mindless sometimes.

While reading the book everything is still pretty much the same; Nick still hates Betsy, and characters were consistent. The central story was the fiends' attacking Betsy because she got sidetracked with a lot of things and neglected them. They were really annoying and stubborn, I guess there were a lot of distractions to the story like a recap here and there but I really didn't mind.

There's also the side story of Nick enlisting Betsy's aid to find some bad guys, which turns out to be just a ruse. I'm not the type to spoil anything but that was really unexpected. Betsy is trying to adjust controlling her powers and it came at an opportune moment. The ending is a foreshadowing of the next book (Undead and Unwelcome) where Betsy goes to the pack leader Michael Wyndham.

This one was all about the Fiends.

Garret the reformed fiend feels sorry for the rest of them and starts feeding them his blood. They slowly become more rational but then conclude that Betsy is to blame for their plight.

The Ant appears and haunts Betsy, and Sinclair and Tina continue to have secrets from her; BabyJon is being babysat by Betsy's mom and half-sister Laura, daughter of Satan. Jessica and Detective Nick get into a major argument and split up; Antonia the werewolf saves Betsy whilst Marc has been shipped off to hospital then a hotel following a fiend attack.

Betsy comes through everything that happens with a new power and a steely determination that nothing else will happen to her friends and family.

A fast, fun, fluffy read.
