New York Times Bestselling author, R.L. Mathewson was born in Massachusetts. She’s known for her humor, quick wit and ability to write relatable characters. She currently has several paranormal and contemporary romance series published including the Neighbor from Hell series.
Growing up, R.L. Mathewson was a painfully shy bookworm. After high school she attended college, worked as a bellhop, fast food cook, and a museum worker until she decided to take an EMT course. Working as an EMT helped her get over her shyness as well as left her with some fond memories and some rather disturbing ones that from time to time show up in one of her books.
Today, R.L. Mathewson is the single mother of two children that keep her on her toes. She has a bit of a romance novel addiction as well as a major hot chocolate addiction and on a perfect day, she combines the two.
In 2019/2020, R.L. Mathewson will be publishing Devastated, the first Anger Management novel, Tall, Dark & Furious, the 6th installment to the Pyte/Sentinel series, Irresistible, the long anticipated novel for the Neighbor from Hell Series as well as many more books throughout the year, paranormals, contemporaries, and YAs.
I just wanted an insight on what it takes to become an (successful) author. This book gently explained to me the Do's and Dont's of the business while giving me a friendly advice and pulling me down back to earth. I highly recommend this in order to get yourself started and motivated.
Lots of good info here especially about the self publishing industry which doesn't often get a lot of love. As a self published author myself there wasn't any new information but it did provide a good opportunity to review some things which may have slipped by.
This book is very in depth and helpful. I learned a lot of things I hadn't thought about like copyrighting and getting an ISBN. I liked the personal R.L. touches because it made an otherwise "boring" nonfiction book easy to read and at times funny. Besides the information about what the title states, this book also has a slight autobiographical feel to it, due to the fact that it has personal advice from the author's experiences. The way it is written is as though your friend has sat you down and laid out all the advice she has to give on this subject. You can take the advice, or leave it. I would have liked to have been given pointers about how to actually write dialogue and description and how to balance the two. Or how to structure your story and outline something as long as a novel. Those things were understandably vague since as a writer it's your job to figure those details out and create your own voice and style, but still. Virtually EVERYTHING else is covered in this book though, in great detail. I highlighted information on almost every page and will definitely refer back during the different stages to becoming a published author. Fingers crossed.
It can't be easy/fun to write 35,000 words about how to do something that you had to figure out yourself when you would probably rather write stories, so thank you R.L.
I have read a few books (as well as several blogs and articles) about writing and publishing and I have to say this is probably the best one I've come across.
Some of the winning aspects of this how to book is how clear, concise and to the point it is. It doesn't overload you with fluff, random stories of self-importance, pages of links that you could have just googled versus paying for the book, or go on and on about how fabulous their own creative process is.
She gives basic real life examples, her advice is on point and blunt, and I'm grateful she took the time to create something that has answered so many questions and even given me a bit of a boost and inspiration to continue pursuing my own writing dreams.
Defnitely a book I'll be re-reading every now and again.
I've read this book earlier this year and I have to say, it was a very concise approach to informing us all of what goes into writing and self publishing.
You come away knowing a lot more about indie authors and the process.
A very informative book about the writing world with some hints of R.L. Mathewson's personality shining through. I enjoyed it and hope to use some of its tips in the future.
