A heart-stopping story of lies, brutality and fear. British girl Megan Stephens tells the true story of how an idyllic Mediterranean holiday turned into an unimaginable nightmare when she was tricked into becoming a victim of human trafficking and held captive for six years by deception, threats and violence.

While on holiday with her mother at a popular Mediterranean coastal resort, Megan fell in love. Just 14 years old, naïve and vulnerable, she had no reason to suspect that the man who said he loved her would commit the ultimate betrayal of her trust.

When her mother returned to England, Megan stayed with Jak, who said he would find her a job as a waitress and promised they would be together forever. But when Megan travelled to the city with Jak, his attitude quickly changed and instead of finding her work as a waitress, he allowed her to be raped and then sold her to a human trafficker.

Abandoned by Jak but still unable to accept that everything he’d told her had been a lie, Megan was coerced by threats and violence into working as a prostitute in private homes and brothels. Then the trafficker threatened her mother’s life and it was Megan’s turn to lie: sending her mother the staged photographs that had been taken of her apparently working as a waitress in a cafe, she told her she was happy.

Too frightened and bewildered to trust or reach out to anyone, Megan remained locked in a world of brutality and abuse for six years. In the end, there only seemed to be one way out.

Megan’s powerful story reveals the devastating realities of human trafficking and the fear that imprisons its victims more effectively than any cage could ever do.

When I made the decision to read this book by Megan Stephens, I knew that I would not be heading into a story of hope and enlightenment, but of something depraved and horrific. Stephens recounts how a single trip to Greece with her mother changed everything and continues to haunt her years later. In the early portion of the book, the reader discovers that Megan lived a life of broken families and parents whose main interest in life was drink and booze-fuelled fights with one another. After the breakdown of the family unit, Megan and her sister turned to acts of petty crime to fill their days. Megan became the problem child, though had yet to get involved in anything too salacious. When Megan and her mom took a trip to Greece, their eyes opened to the possibilities before them. Megan’s mom met a lovely gentleman and Megan seemed to attract the attention of a few Albanian men, specifically Jak. Spending as much time with him as she could, Megan soon fostered a strong affinity for Jak, who appeared to love her as much as she did him. After extending their trip once, Megan’s mom had to face reality and prepared to see them go back home. However, Megan’s attachment to Jak was complete and she turned away to start a life with the man she loved, at the ripe age of fourteen. From there, Jak helped Megan with the idea of working, though this would not be the work that any 14 year-old might expect. Jak asked her to help him raise some money for his family by turning to sex, but only for a time. Megan would work the streets, always monitored by Jak and, blindly, had her eye on the prize the entire time. She hoped that she could get out of the work and build a life with Jak. However, as the countless number of men sought to fulfil grotesque fantasies with her, Megan soon slipped into an abyss from which there was no escape. Jak eventually sent her off to work for another man, who had Megan working in bordellos. This is where she would average eighty to one hundred quickie sessions a night, pulling in thousands of euros for the men who handled her. With threats of death directed towards Megan and her family, there was no escape. Any straying from the path could be met with a slap, a beating, or even worse. Sold and bandied around Athens, Megan soon was in deeper than she could have imagined and she had no idea how to free herself without endangering her mother. Even when she was arrested, her fear of the man who ‘owned her left Megan helpless and turning back to the life. With a mother who was being fed lies about her ‘waitressing career, Megan had no one to help her and a life with no end in sight. How could she find hope in a world where sex and abuse were not hourly visitors? This is the story of a teenage girl’s six years in a human trafficking ring where death was the only assurance of safety. While it is hard to recommend a book of this nature, I would strongly support anyone who wants to pop their naive bubble of daily life to try this piece, if only for its sobering aspect.

As I said before, this was not expected to be a light and enjoyable read. I entered this reading knowing that full well and I suppose it is why I knew the piece would work well as an ‘Awkward Read in my reading challenge. The story reads fairly well, with the narrative flowing easily and the reader able to understand some of the early depravities that Megan faced. While there is a great deal of implied horror, Megan Stephens does not subject the reader to extensive and graphic depiction of what happened to her, which leaves me both thankful and shortchanged. I know it is a little controversial to say that, as an outsider, but I almost wonder if the impact might have been stronger if the reader could see some of the detailed horrors and have that stomach churning moment. That being said, I did see the story has somewhat hokey at times and wondered (as Megan did in the retelling) how these choices could have been made and the lifelines ignored. I had to remind myself that this was a fourteen year-old who was drunk on love making these choices with the neon lights flashing ‘bad idea, ‘stupid girl, and ‘what the hell, Megan!?!. That being said, fear can surely fuel the willingness to stay on the path before you, if only to ensure you live another day. I will say that while I understand human trafficking is a constant issue and happens all over the place, Megan’s story did not play out as I might have predicted. She was not constantly strung out on drugs or sent to some backwater country and shackled to the wall between shifts. She lived in a hotel, was transported to and from work, and remained sober for the most part. It did leave me wondering how much human trafficking might be going on around me (not to sound paranoid) and if there are rings operating in the communities I visit for work on a daily basis. The story was quite sobering and offered some interesting insights, as well as fuelling a sickening feeling that anyone could treat another human being with such disregard. The book can be read swiftly, though its fourteen chapters will surely weigh heavily on the minds and hearts of those who take the time to soak it all in. Horrible topic, but truly informative.

Kudos, Madam Stephens, for this interesting read. Words cannot express how sorry I am to have read the horrors you endured in your teen years, but you’ve synthesised things quite well and left me wondering about the larger world of human and sex trafficking, especially in the West.

This book satisfies Topic #2: Awkward Attempt, in the Equinox #3 portion of the A Book for All Seasons book challenge.

Sorry I'm not buying this story at all. I do believe that happened to this poor unfortunate girl but hang on a minute what mother ( if that was what she called herself ) would leave her 14 year old daughter in a foreign country like Greece , just because her daughter tells her that some Greek guy at a bar in the apartments loves her after 14 days ! What mother , who has a duty of care to look after her daughter , would abandon her and fly back to England , and leave her in the care of someone , who doesn't speak English and both of them hardly know! And where was the other daughter whilst all this was going on. Even when the mother came back to live with the Greek barman , she hardly had any contact with her daughter at all , and yet at the end of the book , Nikos , ( the mums lover) said that he was sick and angry about what he had heard , because the guy who took her and sold her on , was sitting drinking every night in his bar. Isnt it strange that the guy this girl actually stayed for was not even questioned by the mother about her whereabouts or how was she? This girl had a million opportunitys to escape , even people who wanted to her help to pay for the flight tickets and fly her back to Britain ( which they did with her friend) did not inform the police . Even the girl they flew back , who she told , she was abprositure and being trafficked , did not even tell any of her family or inform the police. And in the end her mother still deserts her and abandons her when she needs her the most , flies back to her lover in Greece and abandons her ( once again) this is is a story of a very vulnerable young girl , not being let down by any system . But being let down by her mother !!! Not buying it sorry

This is a hard one to review. It is definitely a heartbreaking story and I tip my hat to this young person sharing her experience to raise awareness. Something like this should never happen to anyone and I'm sad that she is a survivor of such a horrible and tragic crime. On the other hand, I had a really hard time reading this book from a parenting perspective. It seemed like this child was completely neglected by her mother and the whole situation could've been avoided if the mother had set boundaries and made decisions based on her daughter's best interest rather than her own whims. As a result, I found it hard to empathize with the story because I kept thinking "why would her mother do that?" Or "what is her mother thinking?!" The author seemed to blame herself, but at 14 years old, she was still a child and should never have been exposed to that situation. Very tragic although I'm happy that she was able to get herself away from those disgusting predators.

With a foreword from Sophie Hayes who is the author of ‘Trafficked you know that you are in for a bumpy and emotional ride. She says ‘supporting survivors of human trafficking is a cause that’s very close to my heart. Megan Stephens certainly fits into that category.

Megan provides a short chapter on her dysfunctional family childhood and by chapter two we are straight into her first trip abroad with her mother to Greece where her whole world would be turned upside down in the most dramatic fashion. In a bar they meet three Albanians and Megan falls in love with one of them called Jak. Megan will not come home to England and her mother leaves her. Within a short timeframe Jak has whisked her to Athens to be pimped out. Bloody hell. She is sold from pimp to pimp and the stories are just too awful to comprehend. Poor poor girl. There is a very dark world out there and Megan highlights this in all its horrifying detail.

It’s like two reviews are required. One for the actual book itself taken at face value and the other for the actions of the mother while on holiday in Greece.

Megan should be commended for bringing this subject to light. It was absolutely gut wrenching to read about how these girls are sex trafficked and used. It is inhuman. Slavery on a different scale. How she must have coped I have no idea. It is beyond traumatic.

I try not to be judgemental when it comes to these books as the situations are just not normal and without actually being there you cannot say how you would react, but (there was always going to be a but) how can a mother let her 14-year-old daughter go off with a man in his 20s who can hardly speak English and that she is already suspicious of and on top of that go home without her? I just don’t get it. My eldest daughter is 12. If we go to Greece in two years time there is no way on earth she is not coming home with us. Maybe there is more to it than what is written. There has to be. It just doesn’t sit right. Then there is the fact that Megan is 14 and not in school and her mother believes that she is a waitress. It is despicable that men do this to girls but Megan should never have been in this situation to begin with.

Bought and Sold kept me tight in its grip from the first to the last page. It was eyeopening and horrifying how quick things can go wrong and how hard it is to get out of this modern kind of sex slavery.
I am not criticizing the decisions she and her mother made - I guess that's how things in real life sometimes happen. We all make mistakes. But this is not how it should work out.
This should never happen to anyone! I am glad she made it alive out of the situation but I can't even imagine how badly hurt and bruised Megan is...
I finished this book in April and am writing this review now in December. Everything is still fresh in my head and I am still terrified... I will never forget - and that is good.
We all need to be aware to protect us and our loved ones.

This was a truly devasting read to be honest. It was a raw and honest depiction of how easy it can be to be fleeced by someone who's ultimate goal is to destroy a girl for their own gain.

Megan was naive and should never have been left. It happens all to often unfortunately. But harrowing as her story was, she is still alive to tell it so she is very fortunate and brave for reliving those awful memories.

England. Megan Stephens (4, British) & her sister Vicky Stephens mom/dad got a divorce.
John was now their stepdad.
John & mum fought all the time.
The 2 girls shuffled back/forth between the families. That did not last very long
Dad struggled with both drug & alcohol addiction.

Later the 2 went to live with their dad.
Megan Stephens (14) had gone to Greece with her mum.
She soon met Jak (Albanian), Zef, & Veli.
Mum was seeing Nikos (bar owner).
Athens, Greece. Mergim Jak’s cousin met him & Meghan.
After that her world was changed forever.
1st. it was dancing topless in a bar.

Next, it was the daily grind of human trafficking for labor & sexual exploitation.

Warning: This book is for adults only & contains extreme violent or graphic adult content or profanity &/or sexually explicit scenarios. It may be offensive to some readers.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great movie, or better yet a view mini TV series. To be continued. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free author; HarperCollins Publishers; ebookstage; Amazon Digital Services LLC; book

I won this book in a ŷ giveaway. I entered the competition for my mother, who enjoys true life novels like this one, and read it before gifting it to her.

This is a really hard book to rate and review. How do you put a rating on someone's life story? All the way through I was reading it (I'll add my synopsis in a sec) and I was thinking, 'How am I going to review this?!' I finally decided to rate the book on how it left me feeling and compared that to the affect of other books I've read. To do it any other way would be putting a rating on someone's pain and that's just impossible.

The book is one person's experience of human trafficking.

So, Megan was fourteen when she went on holiday to Greece with her mother. She was a troubled child. She described herself as emotionally immature and naive.

While in Greece, she falls in love with an Albanian boy she refers to as 'Jak' (Pseudonym) and convinces her mother to stay in Greece instead of going home. Soon after, Jak starts his systematic manipulation of her and she ends up sold into prostitution without her mother's knowledge. At fourteen, her mother thinks she has moved to Athens with her boyfriend and gotten a job as a waitress, when in fact she is being sold to multiple men a day for sex and Jak is keeping all of the money, telling her he will save it to build them a house for their future children. When Jak moves back home, she begins her journey around the country, being sold to new owners and existing in cheap hotel rooms. She is kept from leaving by fear, the men who own her use threats and violence. She describes three opportunities she had to escape, and she didn't take them because of the conditioning she'd been subjected to.

It's a long and harrowing tale of six years of lost childhood. I don't know how writing a book like this, and having people, strangers, read an review it must feel.

I hope Megan has found some kind of peace.

I dont even know how to rate this one let alone review it.
I want to believe this women But so many things feel false to me. And I kinda felt like she was bragging about supposedly have sex with 50 - 100 men a night ?!? Seriously??

I most of do not believe that her Mother could be right there and not know what was going on and then the one time they do see each other is in a motel room and yet we are to believe that her Mom is "proud" of her for all that she has accomplished?? Like what ?? There is zero proof she has accomplished anything she has nothing ... a few skanky clothes as she refers to many times when she ends up leaving her belongings behind but again we are to believe her Mother didnt question this or the state of her well being as we are told many many many times how she rarely ate and even we she had food she couldnt accomplish more that a few bites .. Again yet she has the energy to have sex 50 -100 times per night ??? Nope just cant believe that. I dont care who you are or how "scared you are" the act of sex alone tires your body !! Oh and then there is the part where she says "I always had a shower after every partner" uhh hmm and yet still had time to have sex 50 - 100 times a night .... There are a million other things I just could not believe as realistic but I just cant waste any more time on this story!

Hovering between a 2-3. While I enjoyed the subject matter, this book is more fiction or based on a true story then it is real.

Some of the things the author claims are completely false. There is NO way in hell that she would have over 90 clients in one night. That is impossible. What place would be that super busy ? But even more impossible is that that many guys could arrive, undress, do the deed ( not every guy is going to get hard, have sex, and get off in a few mins- let alone 90 guys back to back night after night! )

How did she have time to clean up ? Change sheets ? Shower ? Fix make up ? Eat ? Pee ? Come on ! This straight up was a lie.

Plus how when she and her gf escaped, the cops she ran into just happened to know her pimp ?

Right ... plus what Mother just allows her 14 year old to stay in another country alone ? She’s underage - she doesn’t have that option. But all things considered, I guess this was the most believable part of it all ( rolling my eyes )

One thing after another it seemed to be not believable. I do know sex trafficking occurs sure, but it’s an insult to the victims to label this as a 100% true story.

This is an agonizing story of a vulnerable girl who was the perfect victim of the indescribable hell of human trafficking. It leaves the reader with a sense of hopelessness at the magnitude of this problem in the world. Although I am glad this victim was able to escape the physical hell she was in, true freedom from the emotional and physical toll the experience took on her will require a lifetime of support. Definitely an excellent cautionary tale.

Seriously?
There are a million stupid things that you can find while reading this book. The entire story compiles of a series of stupid decisions combined with some even more stupid decisions.
I couldn’t buy it. I was never convinced by the telling of the story. I refuse to believe that this amount of stupidity and irresponsibility actually exists!

Heartbreaking!!! That is the only way I can think to describe her story. It really is hard to imagine a human treating another person that way. It shows how sinful and evil people can be. While the book was in no way religious , I can think about the mercy and grace of God who rescued her and hopefully is writing her story.

I read these types of books because I want to understand why. Not why the traffickers do it - that I’ll never understand except for the greed inside their souls. I want to understand the mind of the ones who get trafficked. Who stay in the those situations even when they really know they aren’t good relationships. These poor women/girls crave love/attention to the detriment of everything else. They’ll forego food, shelter, warmth, real love/attention and ignore all red alert signs. It makes me very sad and I’m afraid I’m too strong willed to fully understand their plight. But I keep trying to understand so I keep reading these often depressing books.

This book puts a face to all those lost lives and horrific lives people continue to live at the hands of the worst of the worst, those who have mastered emotional manipulation and know exactly who to prey on and instil fear into them even when they are out of sight and mind. This book will make you angry! And just the thought of all the sexual horrors Megan and all the other people being trafficked out there go through will their traffickers are sipping coffee, building homes, and marrying "good women"

Megan was an easy prey as dysfunctional homes usually make out of children. She was a desperate and naive girl looking for love in all the wrong places. Now I do have concerns about the events leading up to the trafficking, I don't completely believe the mother left her 14yr daughter in a foriegn country! Like how do you even get back into the UK without authorities questions -or even family, friends, and school- ? Or the fact that her BF who trafficked her attended the bar her mom's BF owned and no questions were raised? Let alone that her mom never in 7 years thought of visiting more than twice or wondering how a 14yr is a waiter? Surely Nikos who should know the nature of his country should have been suspicious? .. There is something not right! And the ending is really cenamtic? I have way too many question marks!

I don't doubt for a second the experience happened and the psychological tricks she played against herself to cope were a complete tragic result of it. It's disgusting to know the sexual crimes men will do when there is no one to judge and no one to protect the person involved and what disgusts me most is that they continue on to live normal lives while their actions blow others' lives to pieces.

I enjoyed reading this book from start to finish I had got very teary eyed at some point. felt very sorry for poor little Megan that had to go threw all that falling in love with some one in Greece and never going back to England until towards the end of the book. but I am very glad that she had chosen to come back to the UK and live a normal life style again after what she had been threw it is wad she has deserved. she shouldn't of gone threw that. I am glad that the author had given up time to write this book and tell the world on what she had been threw which is awful it shouldn't be happening at all. at the age of 14 it is very easy to fall in love but very hard to get out of a life style that had been slowly brought on to the person. glad that Megan is now at college etc and doing things that she loves and hope that she can trust in people and not be afraid which will take time her own time. I had loved reading this book as I liked to know how the person had got over what had happened and what they are going threw after the ordeal. I'd definitely read again.

What happened to this girl is awful. This book describes what it is like to actually live with being trafficked and how difficult it is to survive afterwards. You cannot really review a book on somebody's life, but I do think that what her mother did (allowing her 14-year-old daughter to stay in Greece with a MAN who neither of them really knew) was senseless and ridiculous. What kind of mother would do that? The backstory shows how volatile her relationship with her parents was and how utterly useless her dad was, but she seems to have forgiven her mum, despite her allowing her to stay in another country for six years with a grown man. If her mum would have looked harder, I'm sure she would have seen that there was something going on.

The author appears to believe that nobody believes what she went through and blames her- I can honstly, wholeheartedly say that WE DO NOT. WE BLAME HER MUM.

This book is about the very sensitive issue of human trafficking. A young girl from UK at the age of 14 stays in Greece after going there for vacations with her mum. Her boyfriend makes her work as a prostitute in Athens and then she is sold to other handlers. I believe the book is based on a true story, but some aspects are hard to believe. I cannot believe how a mother would leave her 14 year old daughter along in Greece just because she claims she is in love and wants to stay there. And even is the mother left, how would she not come back in the next days to see her daughter? An even when she does now, why isn't she in constant contact with her daughter when she finally comes back to Greece to stay with her boyfriend. She is only calling or texting her daughter. And what about the other relatives? They all forgot about Megan for 6 whole years. It is really strange to believe that a family would behave like that to a vey young member.

Considering it's story based on true experience I will not say anything harsh or insulting. I'll criticise only bad writing style. While I read this book I didn't felt any sympathy for Megan. Sorrow, fear, thrill, happiness...nothing. I couldn't connect with the story, places, Megan or any other characters. I felt nothing but anger toward hers stupidity and her scumbag so called mother. Not because I'm coldhearted bitch or because I think it's hers fault (it's not), it is because of very shallow and emotionless writing style. It was like average high school essay. This suppose to be a shocking heart breaking story. In reality IT IS! But the book is boring. The writer has failed on so manny levels.

Human trafficking is very serious and complex problem. I respect and sympathies with all victims. It can happen to all of us. Anytime, anywhere.

What a sad story by such a brave strong woman

From the beginning this book is written in such away it's as if the author is explaining to us the readers personally what happened and it's such a heart breaking story you're caused to regularly think "She needs a hug!" just to let her know that when we here the story that almost broke her, in turn it's breaking out hearts.
I was finding myself after putting the book down thinking about the part I'd just read for hours after.
This book is a heart breaking reminder of how cruel humans can be and a reminder on the suffering caused by it. It's such an easy read book of recommend it to everyone , in fact I've bought a paperback version to keep at hand to lend to people who could do with a realization that there life isn't so bad.
Thank you for telling your story. It really has changed lives for others.

This is one of those readings when you get very mixed emotions after finishing it.

I feel for the girl a lot. What happened to her is horrible and there is no human being who deserves to experience this terrible life.

BUT! I understand that she was too little when all this happened to her and probably she was really so naive and not so smart. But i just don't understand her mom. That is her child, she should have realized how low self-esteem her daughter has and do something about it. Letting your 14-year old kid stay in a foreign country, which is not very rich and have been mentioned in hundreds human trafficking cased, is horrifying. Especially when she is a girl and she is staying with a guy she knew for a couple of weeks.

And i just don't get this girl... i mean seriously

I read this for the Popsugar 2015 Challenge: A book published this year.

I feel quite uncomfortable rating a book which is a true story, and about someone's life but I honestly really enjoyed reading this book. I cared so much about Megan and although I think she made some really bad choices, she was young and in love. It made me so sad when I was reading it, as I just kept remembering that all of it was true. It's scary to think that there are people in the world who would do that kind of thing. I think this book is an excellent way to share sexual abuse awareness and I couldn't put it down.
